Adapting Japanese Traditional Techniques in Turning An Old House into Restaurants: Project by Tsutsumi and Associates
in japan, a narrow and long space is called eel's bedroom. while this peculiar traditional ambiance commonly found in the streets of kyoto or several historical districts all over japan, a 3-storeys old house by the lakeside of xihu in hangzhou, china, has taken its cues from traditional japanese accents and turn into an "eel's bedroom" design-like restaurant that matched with the food provided unexpectedly. ryoutei matsuko and matsuko fast food are one of the renovation projects by tsutsumi and associates in the city of birthplace of dragon well (longjing tea), known for its beautiful scenic urban area and natural scenery that calls for outstanding amounts of tourist every year. ryoutei matsuko + matsuko fast food, the casual and formal dining schemes sat in a nearly compact 260sqm area, the architects projecting two types of japanese restaurants inside the building which can offer dining experience based upon needs from local activities; for the tourists, and for a private, family dining in town. the first floor is where matsuko fast food located. purposively designed for tourists who are usually walking around the town, pass by to spend a quick sushi lunch or dinner casually. hence, the service and the price they offer are slightly more affordable than casual or formal dining schemes on the upper level of the building.on the second and third floors nestled a calming, warm, and inviting design atmosphere portraying japanese traditional wooden accents, poetic corridor, and shady warm lights: the ryoutei matsuko. the core of the renovation project and the main dining hall were also performed as the restaurant's entrance. adapting japanese traditional techniques to make little "kyoto" in town once entering the restaurant, you will walk in contemplation down the low-heights ceilings. wrapped between the beautifully crafted eye-catching walls, and the application of traditional japanese techniques used in bringing in "kyoto" and its architectural heritage at the heart of hangzhou urban district. the first traditional accent can be captured through a glimpse of the eye at the moment we walk down the entrance; the beautiful geometric layers formed through a single hemp leaf shape, which is called asanoha. one of the most famous japanese symbolic patterns resembles adulthood, as for in a design, it reflects materials' durability.here, asanoha layering detail has been intertwined from one shape to another to form a diamond pattern carved using a japanese traditional technique naguri. these beautiful patterns hence become the source of beautiful shaded expression on the restaurant's shoebox panels. on half of the second floor is where more private dining rooms situated—wrapped in between washi-paper partition, usually known as taiko-bari. the other half is the main dining hall, which doubled the asanoha pattern applied at the back wall of each table. and a bottom opened-washi partition (also functioning as a window) called yukimi-shoji, which is used to keep the daylight and block some realistic scenery from the outside. also, to embrace a little bit of atmospheric scene through the balconies. also read: rafiq azam of shatotto talks architecture in the green and the poetic responsibility #storyofdesign acme reveals the neo-futuristic home inspired by traditional kentish architecture kengo kuma masculine chicken coop made of japanese wood burning technique the third floor is dedicated exclusively to the vip dining rooms designed in a similar calming atmosphere as the second floor. however, third space uses enough height of attic, which was an expansion of staggered shelves called chigai-dana, up to the ceiling, and put the indirect lighting on them. this technique is a reference for kasumi-dana at shugakuin imperial villa in kyoto.here at ryoutei matsuko, the customer can enjoy a traditional japanese fine dining to their heart's content. meanwhile, for more quick-grab or take-home food, they can visit the first floor, matsuko fast food. the designer, however, did not put much of change on the first floor because of the old house's ceiling height is very low. hence to create a better and comfortable space for the fast-service offer, they referred to the hunazoko ceiling, which means the bottom of the ship. a technique that is commonly used in the traditional japanese house where the centerline of the ceiling is raised only a little. and incorporate them with a wide-wooden ceiling panel alternately up and down, to make the tops of ceiling connected in a drawn curve from the entrance to the back of the space. on the wall where ceiling panels end, they directly fall down with keeping its strip design.while typical japanese fine dining is often associated with luxury high-priced, therefore, the idea of offering two kinds of restaurant-style under the renovation program has breathed in a new life, new choices, for an old, abandoned house. especially when incorporated with traditional techniques, giving the urban city, the people, and the tourists, additional dining experience from the warm accents of classic japanese architecture. source: tsutsumi and associates | photo credits sensor images https://bit.ly/3jd2MzO

Remember to smile and always be grateful for the little things. This particular day was a rough one for me mentally, I was freshly dealing with my grandmother’s death and feeling very lost about what I should be doing. I’m thankful that I had such an amazing friend who was there for me and spent time with me when she could have easily spent her vacation doing something else. I saw so many repeating numbers (particularly on the clock) this day that it was actually insane. I am on my right path and so are you. No matter how rough things get, we can make it through. There are always things to be grateful for. And when you smile, even if you don’t feel like it, it tricks your brain into feeling happier. So, smile now, and tell me something you’re grateful for!
Part 2: The grounds of the villa included gardens, ponds and a lake. I was surprised to note electrical fencing around the perimeter. Turns out it’s to keep out the monkeys, wild boar and deer that come to feast on some of the plants!
