lil doodle of my newest amrev oc, her name is Beth! I do not have much of a backstory for her yet, but soon enough, I will :^)

I used oil pastels for the first time, I really like how this turned out

Been wanting to do one of these with Lauren for AGES, but I never got round to it. Then I saw the Lydia and Phinium expression sheets on @littledigits’ website and I felt inspiration like never before.

The funniest struggle I have with Lauren’s design right now is that she nose too big for she got damn face. Literally, Hilda characters noses take up a fairly small portion of their faces, and her’s took up WAY too much, leaving little room for her to make facial expressions. But I struggled to find a fix because when I made the nose smaller it just didn’t look like Lauren anymore, so I took this as an opportunity to work on that!

She still has a larger nose than most characters, starting higher up (like her grandad!) and ending lower down (but not quite as low as before). I also made her eyes a little smaller and with a shape similar to Lydia’s (though you can see in some of these I hadn’t quite landed on that yet and her eyes are a bit too big), which works both as a nod to her parentage and because I think it makes the nose look bigger. This still doesn’t leave as much room for the mouth as most other characters, but that’s okay — Lauren is a very private person who keeps her feelings close to her chest, I think it works for her to have subtler expressions, adds to how guarded she is! Oh and I also updated the shape of her hair slightly, just to make it a bit more style accurate.

These changes are pretty small on their own, but I think combined they work well to make Lauren feel a lot more…alive? Far less stiff, anyway. I think she also has a more unique facial structure now, instead of just “what if Johanna was 90% nose”. She’s still got a big old nose and I love it but now she can emote, yay!

This is really all just concept stuff, I’m hoping to get a new fullbody style-ref for Lauren out soon! Now that I’ve improved the main issues I had with her face in the last ref, now it’s onto the silhouette! I want her to read as more of a strong character (though it comes across decently in her current ref, I wanna push it more without being as exaggerated as Ahlberg, which is. A challenge for me lol), streamline her silhouette, and finally make her taller than Johanna like she’s always meant to have been <3 I made her shorter for so long because I thought it would help her read better as her daughter but you know what? That’s dumb actually, she’s tall.

Day 3 - Isolation

It's lonely to fall apart. Whumptober 2023! I’m using the @ailesswhumptober's prompt list. This story is about my OC Shu - here’s his profile if you’re so inclined: https://toyhou.se/23743470.shumei-tw 

CW/TW: Medical abuse!!

Shu didn’t know how much longer he could take this. He’d been sick for two weeks now with a fever that would not go down no matter what medications he took. Distracting himself with any kind of media simply wasn’t possible, because everything made him nauseous. Reading, watching TV, even the screen on his cell phone - anything that required focus made his eyes feel like they were trembling and caused him to get dizzy. So he was stuck just lying in bed with nothing to distract him from the abject state of misery he was in.

Julian had mostly been doing consultations from home in order to keep an eye on him. Shu didn’t want his condition to affect his boyfriend’s job, but it was also true that he was scared to be alone. He felt so sick that he could barely make it to the bathroom on his own. Julian often had to help him take the short walk there and back, supporting Shu easily with strong arms around Shu’s torso. 

He hated that it was like this. He’d never been so sick in his life. If it had just been these two weeks of illness, then he could’ve put it down to any number of short-lived infections. But it’d been a year. One whole year of falling ill every single month with barely any healthy breaks in between. Julian had examined him a hundred times and run every test imaginable, but said there was technically nothing wrong with him. Sometimes, he said, people just developed a weak immune system over time. The flu he’d had last year could have triggered it and there was nothing they could do. 

Shu trusted his boyfriend, given that he was a world-renowned doctor. He certainly was getting the best care imaginable, given Julian could treat him at home when the average person would probably be confined to the hospital, or at the least be occupied with constant visits to a doctor’s office. Prescriptions, blood draws, even IV fluids - Julian could do it all from the comfort of their own bedroom. But Shu couldn’t help but feel like something else had to be wrong. He’d always been healthy, catching only one or two minor illnesses a year. In all honesty, he was scared that he was dying from some unknown disease.

Julian told him it was stress that made him feel so much anxiety. He had been trying to convince Shu to quit his job for months, insisting that he could take care of both Shu and his mother even if Shu didn't work anymore. It could even be the baseline level of stress causing Shu’s weakened immune system in general, Julian suggested; they never knew, maybe if he quit he'd miraculously stop getting sick so frequently. But Shu didn't want to quit his job. He was proud of his career and he valued himself as being a hard worker. It felt wrong to burden someone else financially, even if it was his boyfriend who made at least twice the amount he did. He hadn't worked so hard all these years just let someone else work for him. 

It was getting to a point where Shu didn't have much of a choice, though. The absurd amount of leave he’d amassed after ten years with the same company (taking almost no time off over this decade) was now dwindling at an alarming pace. At first his boss had doubted Shu was really ill this frequently. He didn't doubt it for long - every time Shu came into work he looked more haggard than the last time. Everybody knew he was a mess, dragging himself through each work day looking like he might collapse at any time. They’d taken a few of his usual responsibilities away from him, which Shu saw as a warning sign that he wasn’t competent enough. He tried so hard to make up for his shortcomings, but it just wasn’t possible. 

His friends were worried. Mathias and Miki texted him frequently asking after his health, but Shu had stopped answering them most of the time now. It was tiresome when they often said, “Are you feeling any better?” Because the answer was always no. He didn't feel any better. He felt worse, almost always worse and he was scared he was never going to feel good again.

He’d lost over twenty pounds just this year alone, and he was not a very hefty person to begin with. His hair was thinner and had lost the deep, black shine it'd always had. Dull was a good word for him - he looked faded, like he'd disappear if he lost any more weight or color.

“Aiya, Shumei, my son, what is happening to you?” His mom scolded often, her tone brisk as usual but lacking its normal edge. Shu knew she was worried. Before he started getting sick, he used to visit her every Friday afternoon after work, if not more frequently. He’d bring her to plays and events on the weekends and take her out to dinners they hadn’t been able to afford when he was growing up. Now he barely ever saw her - in part because he was often too ill to leave the house, but mostly because he hated the look of concern on her face each time he appeared worse off than the last time he'd seen her.

He felt so alone, so ashamed and useless... Julian was the only reason he didn't completely fall apart. His boyfriend, the only person who really knew the true extent of it all. He clung to Julian like a lifeline. Julian was always there to take care of him and never seemed to tire of all of this, even if Shu was at his wits end. He made sure Shu stayed hydrated and as comfortable as possible despite his constant body and headaches. He would mop Shu’s hot brow, shushing him gently as Shu whimpered in pain. He would carry Shu to the chair next to their bed and change the sheets when Shu sweat through them, which was often. Julian even bathed him, washing off the thick layer of sickness that clung to Shu’s skin. Shu didn't think he deserved it, but Julian never complained. 

Shu didn't realize he was crying until Julian came in and rested a cool hand on Shu’s damp face. “What's the matter, darling? Please don't cry.”

Shu sniffled, tears running down his hot cheeks. “You're too good to me,” he whimpered. “I don't want to be sick anymore. How can you stand being around me?”

“Shh, don't talk like that,” Julian said. He sat on the edge of the bed and leaned over to kiss Shu on the forehead. “I love you. I’ll always take care of you.”

“Aren’t you tired of this? I am,” Shu said, voice wavering. “I’m different now... I’m...”

“No,” Julian said, not a hint of hesitation in his voice. “I’ll never get tired of taking care of you. You're exactly who I fell in love with, and the most important person to me. I’ll do anything to help you.” 

Shu still didn't think he deserved it, but he leaned in to Julian’s touch anyways. “Thank you,” he whispered. “You're the best boyfriend in the entire world.”

“It’s easy because it's you,” Julian said. “And I've loved you my whole life. That'll never change.”Shu closed his eyes, too tired to keep talking. Julian really must love him more than Shu could understand to be so endlessly patient, even though he was so sick all the time. He didn't want to be sick anymore, but if he had to be... He was the luckiest man in the world to have Julian, he thought to himself.

Random Malorie headcanon's ;

- some of her close friends call her "mels" short for Malorie.

She prefers Malorie but she is ok with the nickname as long as only her close friend's call her that. other wise she gets kinda irritated.

- Do y'all remember when i said that this girl is half french? well you should because she flexes on this so much to the point where people get annoyed.

And the fact that she can't even speak french for shit makes it even funnier because all of her social media username's are literally "moncheriemelss"

she actually wanted to do "moncheriemalorie" but Instagram's shitty username restriction didnt let that pass so she went with "moncheriemelss" since its more short and she tought it looks more cute and unique that way (💀)

- she can't and doesn't like drinking too much carbonated drinks because it makes her stomach ache and she literally hates burping after drinking them

- she sets alarm's for almost everything but the ringtone for the alarm is annoying to her so she snooze's the alarm's and as soon as she snooze's them, she forgots their existence 😭

- she is a die-hard twilight fan and cries whenever she rewatches the movies

she also tried to convince kanato to be Edward on halloween but he refused (obviously) but she is still trying!! and she is going to make hime come in her way eventually😏 (well she hopes so...😭)

- she is a fan of horror movies. its something that people get really surprised when they hear because she doesn't seem like the type to enjoy them

- she is also really invested in watching crime cases and how to solve them. every sunday morning, she opens a true crime case video and watches while she eats her silly unicorn shaped cereals.

Her name is Bethany Thomas, Beth for short. She was born in a small area within Delaware with a mother, father, and a younger sister.

It was safe to say her family was middle-class, so her parents didn't struggle too much to provide for Beth and her little sister. As she grew up, she noticed the inequalities around her and discovered that she wanted to be a soldier. But obviously, her gender stopped her from joining the revolution.

Therefore she did the most logical thing, and disguised herself as a man! It was hard for her to keep up and it constantly made her anxious, but it also helped her develop a stronger demeanor within her partners. She was 25 years old at this time.

And, um, would it be valid for me to make her fall in love with a historical figure..?

Zhao:

So first off, she would definitely get along with Jun, that's a given. Zhao is a godmomma and Jun is a momma! They bond over their son <3 I also feel like, you know, something funny is that Zhao is like hundreds of years older than Jun, right? Though, mentally speaking Zhao is in her late twenties maaybeeee early thirties?

Correct me if I'm wrong by all means but I'm pretty sure Jun is older than that so I feel like she would still scold Zhao like she would be scolding a younger sister- Like:

"Oh, don't be so sassy young lady! >:["

"Jun, what-"

"You heard me! You put Wukong to shame with all that attitude-"

Also since Zhao was also on the jttw she would still see Chenguang in Jun sometimes </3

As for another lady she'd get along with? Probably Zhēnzhu, I 'dunno. They just kinda give off those calm vibes and I'm like "Yeah, they'd get along!" Also I feel like Zhēnzhu wouldn't call her "Zhao". She'd either call her "Zhaoyan" or "Yan-Yan" (I love having 50 different nicknames for my characters leave me alone-)

Also childhood friends Ling and Zhao anybody? They're both Celestial girlies- Also I low-key really ship Ling with Wukong even though they're not 1000% confirmed 👉👈 And we all know Zhao kinda really dislikes Wukong LOL- He's like that annoying coworker-

I have no doubt in my mind that she would adore Meihua. She would probably nickname her "Mei-Mei" (I already told you I love nicknames leave me alone-), and I'm turn Meihua would nick name her "Shu-Shu". You can find them at the most UNGODLY hours going on and on about flowers and bugs.

Also, in my mind Quanshui would look up to Lychee. Mostly because she respects her a lot. And when I mean "look up to" I mean, Lychee is that one cool teacher who you like being around because they're so cool.

Also, just a brainrot though but Quanshui and Ehuang? I 'dunno XD Ehuang is just so fiery and I'm a sucker for the ":D and >:|" friendship dynamic. I honestly see them as kinda Polites and Odysseus in EPIC. Like they're jaded but such an older sibling and softie to this one precious cinnamon roll 🥹

Also her and Bao have an auntie-niece relationship me thinks

I don't know a lot about Chyou, but judging by the vibesies yeah, I think they could get along :D

Also, this a kinda weird one, but Yue and Asterius? I feel like they'd have a sort of frenemies dynamic. Mostly because they're both space babies and I can just see them waving at each other while flying threw space- Like-

I also think Polaris would find him cute. Not in "Aww what a cutie" sense but more in an "Awh who is this funny, loud space boy?" sense XD

And we all know Ling and Yue's dynamic- Not going to lie, no matter how much Yue LOVES TO ANNOY this woman... sigh.. Chaotic Aunty and Chaotic nephew vibes-

(Ehuang, Jiang and Suyin would absolutely hate his ass though lmao 😭😭😭😭 They're definitely members of the "I fucking hate Yueliang" club, along with half of China-)

Now, for their JTTW book versions, uhh I thinks it's essentially the same. Except Zhao is an even BIGGER witch asshole in that book so she would definitely get along with Xin Yan more. They'd be ✨t h e w i n e a u n t b e s t i e s✨. Also I totally can imagine book Zhao to be a sort of material figure to Daiyu. Because they're both twisted magic ladies-

Day 4 - Lying

Shumei lay in bed sniffling into a tissue for what seemed like the millionth time this year. It was, in fact, the fourth time, but for someone who was used to catching perhaps one or two colds per year that were mild enough to still work through, this was a huge contrast. He wasn’t sure what was wrong with him. Was it just that he was getting old that his immune system decided to completely fail him? He was thirty-five for God’s sake, he wasn’t that old.

But he felt like it. He felt like he was falling apart - physically, and as a result, emotionally. He was used to being strong, working through anything. He’d gone to work with such a bad fever that he’d fainted before for once, and even then he’d only taken two days off. This was different, though. These colds were so frequent that they were wearing him down until he had no energy left to protest when Julian called him into work yet again. Maybe if he was single he’d still be pushing himself to go in, but Julian was a doctor. He knew best, and he told Shu he really needed to stay home. So Shu listened even though he felt so guilty about letting his colleagues down that it only added to his misery.

Julian was incredible. Shu had no idea how his boyfriend put up with him. He worried it was just obligation but Julian insisted it wasn’t. He cared more about Shu and Shu’s health than anything, he told Shu over and over again. It made Shu cry knowing he had such a wonderful boyfriend who always took care of him even though he felt like he was a mess these days. When he looked at himself in the mirror, he couldn’t see traces of anything handsome left. Just someone who looked exhausted and sick. He’d started leaving the bathroom cabinet over the sink open just so he didn’t have to look at himself while washing his hands.

Julian came into the room with yet another hot bowl of rice porridge for him. Shu didn’t seem to be able to stomach much else when he was ill. His mom had taught Julian how to make it and while it wasn’t the same as his mother’s congee, it was surprisingly good. Shu pushed himself up in bed, coughing miserably. “Thanks,” he croaked out. 

“It’s my pleasure, my love,” Julian said, kissing him on the cheek. He looked as perfect as ever, his beautiful brown hair styled flawlessly without even trying. 

Shu wiggled away from the kiss just a little. “You’re going to catch this.”

Julian laughed. “You know I never catch your colds. Besides, I’m a doctor, my immune system is made out of steel.” He held one arm up in a fake show of muscle and whipped his winning smile out. Shu forced himself to return the smile weakly. Julian always tried to cheer him up so much. He was the best partner in the entire world and Shu felt like he couldn’t give anything back to him anymore. 

“I’m sorry...” He said quietly, hanging his head in shame. 

“How many times do I have to tell you, stop apologizing for being sick. You can’t help it,” Julian said matter of factly. “And I like taking care of you. It’s fine.”

“There’s no way you like it,” Shu mumbled. “Not for the fourth time in a row.”

“But you’re adorable when you’re sick,” Julian said, eyes sparkling. He kissed Shu again, this time on his inflamed red nose. Shu sighed. He had no way of knowing just how much Julian meant that.
