so I finally finished detective anna (6302 years late I KNOW) and all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FINALE?????? are we getting a s3???????? we NEED a s3!!!!!!!! I NEED ANSWERS. AND I NEED THAT WEDDING MORE THAN I NEED FUCKING A I R.

i haven't seen the new series yet, and i think i'll only be watching it to see the familiar locations, it's like coming home you know. i mean, i don't care much for the genre per se and i have yet to see an inspiring male face in the cast list.

but you know what would be outside the box. so, at the end (of these four episodes or, like, a couple of dozens more, because, let's face it, it is possible) it turns out that this new Anna actually has no mystic abilities at all and all her visions are actually hallucinations caused by a brain tumor or a mental illness. all mystic plot twists are logically explained (a tribute to OG Scully Shtolman's healthy skepticism and analytical rational mind, let's give him what he always wanted in s1). more than that, she's not a ShtolmAnna descendant at all. because, you know, the country has gone through revolutions and wars and all kinds of mistaken/stolen identity stuff could happen. 

BUT. 

when we sigh, relieved to say goodbye to this particular set of tiresome (please remember that i'm basing this solely on the angry rants of viewers who haven't seen the show yet but tbh i'm not expecting much myself) characters, we see (probably someplace other than Zatonsk) the/a(?) real descendant of Anna (and) Shtolman, who may or may not have the last name Shtolman she may or may not be using (i would say it's antifeminist to make this family consistently produce boys just to keep that name going, but neither human physiology nor plot require that there be no girls, and here we get enough material for a few spinoffs if we're willing to follow the other branches of the family tree). this descendant may or may not know her family history either (again, revolutions, wars and other historical excuses for much confusion, including possibly French emigration). voila, ten more seasons.

see, we're having fun.

Why do I feel like season 2 Anton is different from season 1? I always thought he was a big StolmAnna shipper. But then he proposed to her when Yakov was missing? And he’s a lot more annoying

because sometimes people change? season 2 is different from season 1 in general, less romantic and naive, more down-to-earth (well, for a supernatural frama) and grim. i get why it’s not to everybody’s liking. i keep reading that people don’t want their TV too realistic.

but people don’t change that much. i think Anton was always ambitious and not always kind and humble. remember their first meeting, when he didn’t know who Shtolman was? when he yelled at Shtolman for giving him advice about his investigation? i wonder why people tend to think s1 Anton was that perfect. he was just more of a puppy back then and followed the boss around, learning from him, admiring him, and, being a junior rank, didn’t get much chance to show his worse qualities.

so, then the boss disappears under more than suspicious circumstances, leaving behind Anton locked in a cell and a heartbroken girl he has had a massive crush on for a while (did you maybe miss him murmuring “i love you, Anna Viktorovna” at the end of s1? i don’t think he did love her though, infatuation maybe, a kind of worship - like the hero worship he had for Shtolman. i hope he will find it someday, probably with that new Mironova girl).

and now Anton is the boss himself, and the ex-boss comes back to shine again. Anton is not happy, he got used to being the alpha dog. he does things his way now, he even has his own network of informers, etc. 

on the personal side, Shtolman was more than just his boss - he was a mentor, a big brother figure, a friend. he didn’t just abandon Anna, he abandoned Anton too. there must be quite a bit of resentment there too, so it flares up occasionally because Anton can’t really pretend.

as for his proposal to Anna, i don’t think he really believed she’d accept (although he might have hoped, deep down), and it was more of an attempt to pull her out of depression. and i never saw him as a ShtolmAnna shipper, maybe a reluctant one at best. he just accepted in s1 that these two belonged together, and after seeing how much Anna suffered, he tries not to let that happen again, by doing and saying things that are not always... nice.

so, yes, Anton is more annoying this season. he’s supposed to be. but, while it may feel a bit overdone at times, most of it is still very much in character. he is a flawed human being, just like the rest of them.

i feel like the Big Bad might end up lost and confused amidst of all the high ShtolmAnna drama - much like the Night King in GoT

he’ll be like MWAHAHA and the two idiots will be like WHAT WERE YOU THINKING and SHUT UP YOU HAVE NO RIGHT and we’ll be like I WONDER IF ANYBODYS GETTING MARRIED IN EP40 and before you know it Zatonsk is an independent elective monarchy with Dr. Skryabin as the king (why do you think i came here all the way and never went to Turkestan?) and Rebushinky’s writing A Bong of Mice and Liars

and the @justanotherfan‘s lonely voice will thunder in the austere wilderness of the Wednesday internet beyond the Zatonsk town wall: I KNEW IT!!! or possibly WOW I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING or most likely WAIT BUT WHAT ABOUT--

and maybe the writers will hear.

and giggle.

because that was their plan all along.
