If he’s going to trust James not to hurt anybody, then… he should also trust James not to hurt him. Even if he tells James what he knows, if James is the person he believes him to be, then James wouldn’t hurt him.

It’s a big if, and Steve is probably insane for even considering it.

But the fact is, he likes James. He wants to get to know him better; he wants to see him again. And he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life wondering what the truth was, and whether he made the right choice.

Decision made, Steve gets to his feet, and goes to put the kettle on.

As November comes to a close, he heads into town to pick up supplies and ends up with a stowaway.

Bucky hasn't had much luck over the past seven years. Disaster caused his family to move from New York to Indiana, and his life has steadily fallen apart ever since. After one too many heartbreaks, he decides to hitch his way back to the last place he remembers being happy: Brooklyn. He's in the homestretch when he finds himself stranded in a half-empty tourist town in the Catskills and decides to take a chance crawling into the back of someone's truck.

Then he sees his neighbor. His neighbor is the most handsome bear he's ever seen. He's seven feet tall, at the very least, and is broader than a chimney. Steve falls head over ass in love immediately.

And then it turns out his neighbor is literally a bear. Not just a bear, but a real, furry, snarling, honey-stealing bear. Bucky, it turns out, is a werebear.

Usually, Bucky would dismiss such a statement as an obvious lie, but Wilson and Romanoff had not lied to them the entire time they’d been here, as far as he could tell. They had promised that there would be no punishments, and so far they had kept that promise. Perhaps they could trust Romanoff’s word on this, too.

Yeah so, because of quarantine I’ve been consuming a ton of fic. I’ve probably read over 1.5 million words in just a couple months. So why not share what I’ve been reading! But it turns out there's more to "fixing Bucky's head" than "getting Hydra out of it." When a group of rogue scientists manage to neutralize the serum and make Steve very sick--pre-serum "this is bad" kind of sick--and they're cut off from contact with Wakanda, Bucky knows only one person with resources to help. He calls Tony and surrenders on the condition that Tony tries to help Steve.

From there, it's basically three variously messed-up guys’ trajectories from "This Is Fine", "Reasonably Speaking I Know It’s Fine", "I Will Be Fine With It" to actually being fine, guest-starring a far-better-adjusted teenage boy who climbs walls, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, two women with a keen sense of the absurd, and Bruce, the Zen master of “it’s fine that it’s not fine.” Add in the fact that Bucky's been secretly in love with Steve since the thirties and things only get harder. Learning to be a person is the hardest thing Bucky Barnes will ever have to do--but he's got company along the way.

Steve hates snow. He hates winter. But he loves Christmas and he's been looking forward to it all semester. All he really wants is to get home so he can relax and spend the holiday with his Ma. Bucky loves snow. He loves winter. He's Jewish, so Christmas isn't a huge deal for him, but he loves the winter songs that come on when Christmas rolls around. So when a blizzard comes rolling in while he and Steve are driving home from college at the end of the semester, he's pretty excited. Steve hates it on principle. Unfortunately, they get caught in it and are forced to pull over and weather out the storm at the nearest cheap motel they can find. There's just one problem. There's only one bed.

Can they survive three days of awkwardness and sexual tension? Will their feelings emerge or will they tiptoe around each other as they always have? Will it end in disaster or will it give them the chance to find happiness at last?

Second chapter is up!

Preview:

The Soldier checks his surveillance cameras again, tracking the progress of the intruder. When the man had tripped the first motion sensor, he’d been alarmed, sure that someone had come for him at last, using the storm as cover for their approach. When he’d seen him on camera, he had wondered if this was some kind of decoy, or if the intruder was an agent like the Widows, trained to use apparent vulnerability as an advantage.

But as far as he can tell, the man is exactly what he claims to be—a lost traveler, seeking shelter. The Soldier watches through the camera as the man stumbles and falls, clambers to his feet, and falls again a minute later. The cameras are spaced so as to give a continuous view of the driveway, which means the Soldier can see the increasing difficulty with which the man struggles through the snow.

Every time he falls, it takes him longer to get up. With every stumble, his steps grow slower. And then, finally, he falls and does not rise again.

The Soldier waits for several minutes, just to be sure. Then he curses, flings on his boots and jacket, and runs out into the storm.

When they get back up to the cabin, James announces that he’s going to plow the driveway. “Even if it snows more later, it will be better to have a head start.”

“I can clear off the steps, if you’ve got a shovel,” Steve offers. He braces himself for James to make some remark about his size, or the lack of muscle James must have noticed this morning, but he doesn’t.

Instead, he just says, “Shovel’s over there”, gesturing toward the corner of the porch, where the snowy shape of a handle is leaning against the wall. “You don’t have to, though.”

“I know. I want to.”

The corner of James’s mouth lifts in a small smile. “Okay. Only do as much as you want to, though. I can finish the rest.”

He puts his hand on Steve’s hip to steady him, and is immediately, viscerally aware of the fact that Steve is still only wearing boxers under the oversized flannel shirt; that he need only move his hand a few inches downward to reach bare skin.

He must make a sound, or perhaps he takes too long to respond; whatever it is, Steve turns to look at him with a startled expression that quickly melts into a grin. “Something on your mind, James?”
