I read this article that people with Parkinson’s are more prone to dehydration, so I think I’m just gonna, like, put this on his desk. That’s sweet. It’s also very intrusive, which I guess is your trademark.

made a new phone that can detect cracks on the screen. it uses this tech to permanently disable part of your display and shrink the phones effective resolution and screen size, so as to never let a crack obscure the content on the screen. our best engineers have been carefully smashing screens to try and shrink displays down to the smallest size they can without completely bricking the phone. theres a bounty for the first to get it down to 1x1 pixel

WHEW, new painting finished and added to the art gallery! it's "Nether II" because this one was my second attempt at a nether landscape, when I was first figuring out how to make images that would work as map art.
This one's 2x2, so four maps went into its creation! More progress under the cut!
Tumblr media
Here's the original concept! Same process as last time; draw a simple digital drawing in map-safe colours, shrink and compress the image to 32x32, then convert it to map-safe colours again. This one is still using that limited palette that I'd assumed was the default flat colours but turned out to be all the BRIGHTEST shades, which meant a single continuous staircase for each of the 4 maps...
Tumblr media
...Except, as you might notice, for the frame -- I got frustrated with the picture frame part being 3 different materials and thought this might be a good opportunity to test out full staircasing possibilities -- up, down, and flat -- to create variation in a single colour that's more subtle! So the frame is kind of doing its own thing here.
Tumblr media
(boo set off fireworks when i finished the whole thing, it was great)
This was a lot of work but I'm really pumped to finish a 2x2! Part of the reason I set out on this quest was because I love the existing 1x1 paintings, but so few of the larger sizes have the same vibes. Huge shoutouts to literally everyone else on the server for helping me gather materials and tear down each map so the next one could go up.

Of charts and changes
When I was a couple of weeks into this project and had a decent working prototype, I spent a while pondering where the game was headed. How many machines will it have? How many different items can the player make? Will I get sucked into the horrid black hole of scope creep?
All valid and easy questions to pose with any project, but good forward planning is great way to remove some of these concerns.
Tumblr media
Measure twice, cut once
I made some early tactical decisions about the mechanics of the game that may seem restrictive, but actually help to narrow the scope of work in the long term.
These things might include steps such as:
Limiting machines to only accept items from belts, rather than other machines (so no butting-up of machines to other machines). This helps to remove complexities later on when I may decide to change or add slot types to machines, and don't want to have to rework all of that hand-off code.
Putting a hard-cap on machine placement size (1x1 or 2x2 only). This helps me understand layout ratios much easier, and allows me to make some assumptions about placement and input/output slot placements that simplifies the code.
Only allowing one item per belt segment. Reverting back to this was done to simplify the save-game state, input/output belt code, and actually to help de-clutter the visual noise in the factory, along with saving a few additional frames of GPU rendering.
There are numerous others, but sometimes imposing limits early on helps to avoid later problems.
Please wait, processing
One of the other big-ticket decisions was nailing down exactly what machines will be in the game, and exactly what items they produce. This is a little harder, because you have to plan both at the same time and it can get a little... messy.
Factory games are great in that they get you to think both spatially and strategically. Making layouts in a factory is fun, placing machines and laying down belts is satisfying. But so is coming up with that super-optimised layout that shrinks your setup by 25%.
I'm not sure how much of the latter this game is aiming for, but there will be factory obstacles and things you need to work your factory around, so it could provide for some interesting layouts.
I came up with a definitive 'machines' list a while back, but didn't back-fill it with the items I needed them to produce. So it took some re-working to get everything decided.
To that end, this horrendous diagram was born:
Tumblr media
It's a chart of all of the machines that actually process items (some aren't shown that just move or change item positions). It's a kind of tech-tree, if you will, showing all the ways items get processed, and at what process 'stage' each one sits at (i.e. how many machines it has been processed by at that stage).
This diagram, although maybe a little confusing, is the precise map I need to fill out the rest of the game's content. It tells me what machines need to be made, and what items I need to create. Also, crucially, what machines do what with which items.
Try saying that a few times quickly.
Tumblr media
This kind of forward planning helps me to stay on track, gives me concrete development objectives to work towards, and also gives me a good roadmap of how to get to the next major milestone - all game machines created, and all items made. A pretty hefty milestone, to be sure.
I'll be working the above up into my prototype project before porting it over to the main game. I want to test the flow and make sure that the complex, sometimes 8-deep processing stages work flawlessly and don't get wacky in the save game file for some reason. I think I've built a decent foundation, so I'm not especially worried about this.
We're done for now!
Anyway, that's about it for today. Sorry for the long rambling post, but it's still important (to me) to catalogue my journey on this project so that I have something to look back on to understand my thought processes, and what challenges or difficulties I had to tackle during development.
But as always I really appreciate everybody who's swung by, left a comment or a heart, and hopefully I may see you again in the next one.
Keep being awesome! Much love ❤️

Note
the way i do corner lots is start w a lot that’s 1x1 bigger than i want the final lot size to be (e.g. for a 1x1 i start on a 2x2) and then section off five tiles on each edge. then with lot adjuster i shrink by five tiles on each side (might have to check advanced options?) and there should be a way to add a road to the appropriate side. oh also the new road will add 10 tiles to the total size of the lot
Huh, good to know. Will have to poke at my intended lot with the Lot Adjuster again, thank you, anon!

Gosh, I wanna ROLEPLAY!
So, hello everyone! I'm Ellie and I made this blog looking for someone new to roleplay with who prefers long format, (20+ lines) descriptive 1x1 style roleplays. (edit: preferably each of us playing our character + the partner´s love interest/s, rather than just interacting w/each other as characters!)
I roleplay almost exclusively Hetalia, but always with some fun twist or AU, and I'm also totally open to stuff like the Arcana, Dragon Age, etc. As long as it's fantasy/scifi and I know it, I'm down!
I'll post a list bellow of my personal favourite (hetalia) storylines and hopefully it'll inspire one of you or give you an idea for something new! I always love to hear it so feel free to reach out whenever.
Have a great day! ✨✌️

 'Angels and Demons'
Angels are hardly the rosy cheeked cherubs that you might think, but rather powerful warriors who live hidden from the rest of the world, protecting it from their darker counterparts. Demons are highly territorial and love to wreak havoc wherever they go, always looking to one-up each other. They're not above capturing angels to harness their powers, and maybe take a trophy or two. Who doesn't love a nice set of wings mounted over the fireplace?
'1950's Cyberpunk'
Step into the big city filled with glamour, exclusive galas and excitement! Where the elites of the world mingle at the top, and the rest, well... Live in poverty at the bottom. Gangs rule the stinking underbelly of the city, the police have eyes everywhere and discarded android servants are reused as makeshift assassins to earn their keep.
'Taken By Pirates'
A misfortunate situation gets you in hot water with a terrifying pirate captain and you're forced onto their ship, watching your town shrink ever smaller and disappearing beyond the horizon. However will you get out of this mess now?
 'Game of Crowns'
The wheels never stop turning at the Capital. King Francis Bonnefoy is the ruler of the Glasswater Isles, but there's been whispers of uprisings, rebellions and betrayal. Everyone knows the Kirklands have been hungering to take the throne for generations and the harsh winter hasn't made lord Braginski any kinder. When they all come together for the king's birthday celebrations, will swords clash? Sparks fly? Or doom be upon us?
'Nabbed'
You've got a secret admirer and they've been keeping a close eye on you for a long time. Now they've decided it's high time to make you theirs, whether you know that you want them too or not...

just in time for Halloween, I have finished: A SPOOKY CUSTOM PAINTING!!
well the timing was a coincidence but MAN, this has been a BIG project and I'm so excited to have one complete -- as you can see from my off-hand here, this is map art!!! I kept having the thought "wow I wish minecraft had more paintings" and then realised.... maybe i could make this happen....... process under the cut!
I really like the sort of ambiguous, compressed, pixellated look of a lot of the 1x1s and wanted to try to mimic that, so I designed this by making a simple drawing in Map Art Safe Colours, shrinking it down to 16x32, and then converting it to Map Art Safe Colours again to get the final picture I'd be making (and also adding a frame, so it'd look like a minecraft painting):
Tumblr media
I was trying to stick to a flat map (i couldnt find any tutorials for staircasing that weren't just "and then plug it into a schematic program," and I wanted to try to do this by hand), which meant my palette was SUPER limited, probably the most difficult thing about creating this; there were a LOT of previous attempts that just didn't have enough colours available to let them shrink nicely. BUT THEN IT TURNED OUT the palette I was working from was accidentally all the LIGHTEST shades rather than the middle shade SO I HAD TO LEARN TO STAIRCASE ANYWAY
Tumblr media
For anyone unfamiliar, the way the "shading" works on maps is that a block has a middle shade if it's the same level as the block north of it (flat), a lighter shade if it's taller than the block north of it, and a darker shade if it's shorter than the block north of it -- so in order to get a whole section to be The Same Lighter Shade, each "line" of the section must be taller than the previous one, leading to a staircase effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order to make a 128x128 area into a 16x16 pixelart, each "pixel" is A FULL STACK of blocks in whatever colour, so HUGE shoutouts to @corruptedendermachine and @inkcryptid for gathering all these blocks for me! BOO MINED A TRULY TERRIFYING AMOUNT OF TERRACOTTA LMAO. And thanks to maf and @tinfoilsnow and phos for building the block-catching area underneath, and helping me tear the first map down to build the second piece!
While tallying up blocks, making a paint-by-number-looking key for myself to reference, putting out a Needed Materials List, and of course actually creating the art all took additional time, I put out the materials list and a call for help with block-gathering in mid-october... this took only a couple of weeks to build??? Admittedly I was VERY excited and focused on it haha.
I'm hoping to make more of these... there are two more designs included in the Needed Materials list that we just need to finish gathering blocks for, and I've made a few new designs utilising the Whole Palette now that I feel pretty confident that I understand staircasing, which I still need to tally up blocks for... so we'll see if I can pull those off!!

I finished the row houses! It took a little longer because I forgot to make the left and right ends before shrinking and I couldn’t place a roof properly on a 1x1 lot 🙃
But after enlarger, fixing, and shrinking AGAIN I could put the final touches on. No interior pics bc it’s unfurnished to keep it starter priced.
