Amazon & Ava Labs Bring Scalable Blockchain Solutions to Enterprises and Governments
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) team joins Ava Labs for a deep dive into the reasons why the Avalanche platform is well positioned to scale blockchain adoption across enterprises, institutions, and governments. This virtual roundtable discussion was recorded on January 12, 2023.
Jacquelyn Melinek, Senior Reporter at TechCrunch, moderates a stimulating conversation involving six of today’s leading experts in blockchain technology: Bradley Feinstein (AWS) Jeff Hasselman (AWS) Shai Perednik (AWS) John Nahas (VP of Business Development at Ava Labs) Nick Mussallem (SVP of Product at Ava Labs) John Wu (President of Ava Labs)
Topics covered in this wide-ranging discussion include:
The business and technical aspects of the partnership between AWS and Ava Labs.
How AWS makes it easier to launch Subnets.
Why many companies remain reluctant to adopt blockchain technology, and how the
AWS/Ava Labs partnership can address this problem.
How AWS can help bring a wider range of participants into the blockchain world.
How Layer 2 Subnets can provide enterprises with customized solutions and seamless cross-chain communication.
How the Shrapnel blockchain game illustrates the power of Subnets.
AWS’ record in empowering crypto builders.
How blockchains can aid “track and trace” supply chain inventory programs.
How Deloitte's disaster recovery app illustrates how blockchains can aid business workflows and reduce administrative costs.
How blockchains provide a nurturing environment to drive innovation at the enterprise and governmental levels.
The anticipated timeline for blockchain adoption at the enterprise level and the role of tokenization.
AWS initiatives to promote blockchain tech.
Making blockchain adoption simpler as a way of encouraging design experimentation and end-user participation.
The major Web3 infrastructure challenges today and how they can be overcome.
The types of enterprises and government agencies currently demonstrating an interest in blockchain tech.
How the AWS team views the future of blockchain, and the importance of listening to customers.
How AWS and the Activate program can help designers launch Subnets.
The future of the AWS/Ava Labs partnership and anticipated developments over the next year.
Announced in late 2022, the partnership between AWS and Ava Labs was inspired by both parties' mission to accelerate the adoption of blockchain technology at the enterprise and governmental levels.
By joining forces in this manner, Ava Labs hopes to streamline the process of launching custom blockchains on the Avalanche network, while Amazon Web Services benefits from Ava Labs' participation in both the Activate program, which enables blockchain developers to use AWS credits on Avalanche projects, and the AWS Partner Network (APN). Future collaborations between the two organizations include various hackathons as well as the upcoming Avalanche Summit.
In just a few years' time, the Avalanche smart contracts platform has earned a reputation among DeFi aficionados as the ideal destination for individuals and organizations looking to take advantage of the unmatched power of blockchain. On Avalanche, developers can create decentralized applications (dApps), buy cryptocurrency, trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and design custom blockchains—all on a state-of-the-art user-friendly platform that boasts the fastest time-to-finality (TTF) in the industry today. warnings: major angst, gore, character death
Series Masterlist
Bruce raised his head towards the intense, blinding light that encased the entire cavern. His eyes glazed over, watching his wife rise above the ground, sword raised and pointed towards Aziel, eyes white, features void of emotion.
It looked nothing like the woman he knew to be his wife, nothing like the Y/N he loved.
The boys, each of them badly wounded, weakly raised their heads towards the flames, almost unable to even recognise the woman before them that they knew as their Mother. The hatred, the rage they felt from the being before them, it was foreign.
Bruce groaned as he leant on his elbows, the pain terribly throbbing in his abdomen. He looked back up towards his wife before finally getting to his feet, struggling, but getting to his feet nonetheless.
Tumblr media
The anger thrived within my very being, as if I was feeding off the gem that sunk deeper and deeper into my chest, the powers that I possessed so many years ago now flowing through me once again.
I felt powerful, stronger than I had ever felt before. Even more power than when  when I weakly fought that slimy old councilman who had overpowered me, more than when I fought my brother for the first time.
My eyes briefly flickered towards the Cryptos who began to flood the chamber, their mouths open with a battle cry belting from their bellies, their weapons raised.
However, as I raised my sword, they were silenced, an echo of their screams of pain extinguished, their bodies disintegrating into nothing but dust, billowing right back out of the temple halls.
My eyes flickered back towards Aziel, the presence of fear in his eyes making me smirk as he raised his scimitar once more.
The familiar revving of thunder and lightning spinning and crackling from his fingertips, aimed right towards my heart, only for it to be sent flying into a corner of the chamber at the flick of my wrist, dust falling from the ceiling to join the residue on the ground.
Aziel growled at this, lunging towards me, his scimitar raised before colliding with Aeris, a loud ‘clang’ vibrating through the entire ground of the temple. I stared into the eyes of my little brother, barely pressing any weight against the blade as he began to buckle.
His eyes shifted from mine to the sword, back and forth, before he let out another shot of lightning. I took the hit, deflecting his attack to stab my side, the two swords continuing to clang and scrape against one another.
Just as he went to slice across my waist, I grabbed the sword in my hand, enduring the blade digging into my palm, ignoring the blood that dribbled down my wrist. I gripped it with all my strength, and with a snap, the scimitar’s blade was crushed beneath my palm, shrapnel flying across the room.
‘Y-You bitch!’ Aziel stuttered, ‘You’ve taken everything from me!’
He raised his arms above his head, screaming as he released yet another round of lightning, his chest heaving and hands trembling. I barely lifted a hand before a shield of fire encased me, ricocheting the lightning and thunder all across the walls.
The shield barely disappeared before I grabbed Aziel by the throat, bringing him in close to me, ignoring the whimpers that left him, the flames beginning to spread across his neck, burning and blackening his flesh.
‘And you almost took everything from me Aziel. You thought you could destroy my family … but you forget one thing little brother, I will stop at nothing to protect them. Even if that means killing you.’
Just as I raised my sword above my head with an almighty cry, my wrist was gripped firmly.
With a growl, I turned, and a gasp caught in my throat.
Bruce stared back at me. Not Batman, Bruce.
His cowl no longer covered his face but hung around his neck, eyes wide, bruises of red and purple tarnished his skin, sweat slithering down his face, ash decorating his hair like fallen snow.
But more importantly, I took in the fear present in his eyes.
Bruce held back the urge to cry out in agony at the burning sensation that flowed through him, his arm straining, muscles taunt.
He could feel it all. The anger, the sadness, the betrayal, the fear, all of it. What had been locked up for so many years was now being released the flames that left his beloved’s fingertips, but he knew this was wrong, and more importantly, he knew you did too.
He shook his head. ‘Please don’t this. It’s not worth it.’
I froze, looking between him and Aziel, only to turn back to Bruce who squeezed my hand gently, giving me a reassuring nod.
‘Don’t stoop to his level my love, don’t become what he wants you to be.’
I couldn’t stop the sob that left my lips, my eyes pulling away from my husband’s as I stared at my brother, the hand I had on his neck tightening a fraction, ignoring the whimper Aziel let out.
‘I don’t care what I am! Not anymore! I know what I am I’m nothing but a monster! H-He needs to pay for everything he’s done! He needs to die!’ I spat in anger, ignoring the tears that ran down my face. Ignoring how my sword shook within my grasp.
'Y/N … please look at me.'
'No … I can’t …’ I cried through sobs, shaking my head. squeezing my eyes shut. When there was a gentle caress to my chin I couldn’t help but sigh at the familiar touch of my lover, leaning into his palm that cupped my cheek.
'You’re not a monster, Y/N. You are a mother to our sons. You are my wife. Nothing will ever change that. Ever.'
As my eyes met his, witnessing the conviction of his words in his very eyes, I sighed, allowing myself to lower the glowing blade, barely sparing a glance toward my brother who I shoved away from me.
Bruce squeezed my hand, stepping closer as the flames around me began to dwindle. His small smile made my insides turn, and I couldn’t help but do the same.
However, I glanced over his shoulder, watching as Aziel once again lunged towards husband, a smirk overcoming his features.
'Bruce!'
I swung us around, keeping my body close to his, only to choke as I felt the sickly thin blade enter my chest. I gasped as Bruce gripped my cheeks, hands shaking against my skin as I looked down towards the wound. The gem, now merely pieces, began to crumble, and shudder violently against the beating of my heart.
I shoved Bruce away from me, clawing at my chest with a whimper and gasp desperately as the burn itched at my skin. The pain curdled within my being, like I was being burned from the inside out.
I weakly looked towards Bruce as blood suddenly spilt from my lips whining as he staggered back towards me, his tears falling as a scream left my lips.
Flames erupted around me, engulfing me, swirling through the skies as the gem in my chest shattered, skin and flesh ripping from the wound as violent winds thrashed around me.
Bruce was sent flying backwards, skidding against the rocky ground. He could barely raise himself to his knees, and for the first time in his life, he couldn’t move. It was as if he was watching his Mother scream over his Father’s lifeless body hitting the ground.
The nightmare alive once more, but this time, with the love of his life at the centre of it all imprisoned in a burning dome of flames. The boys, now huddled together, watched in horror as the flames escaped their Mother’s chest, flying dangerously and uncontrollably around the room violently.
My screams faded to nothing but a dull cry, the flames evaporating, circling the insides of the broken gem. And suddenly, it was gone. Darkness invaded my sight before I even hit the ground.
Aziel watched as his sister slammed into the ground, unmoving before the clattering of the sword caught his attention. But before he could get to his feet, he howled as a sword was plunged into his shoulder. Blood spilt from his open mouth violently as he grasped at the open wound, eyes widening briefly in horror at the voice that pressed against his ear.
‘That was for our family, and for our sister … brother.’
Wren withdrew the sword from Aziel before racing over to his sister, ignoring the cries of his younger brother as guards pressed a jewel to his back, spider-like legs of iron wrapping around his chest before they dragged him away.
Tumblr media
It felt as if someone had slammed a concrete slab over my head, a pounding overtaking my right side, sounds vibrating painfully against my eardrums. The taste of iron was evident on my lips, and a burning sensation that continued to grow from my chest.
‘Mumma?!’ Dick’s voice suddenly rang through the ringing in my ear.
'Oh God is she’s okay? Please tell me she’s okay!’ I heard Tim cry.
With barely any strength I opened my eyes slowly, watching Jason as he squeezed  my hand several times, the rest of the boys gathering around my body.
Their hands hovered over me, looking towards one another as my body shook, the adrenaline beginning to fade and the pain seeping into my very bones.
‘We have to turn her over, carefully now,’ I hear Bruce say somewhere over me before I felt his lips press against my ear, his hand gently caressing my head, ‘My love were going to help you, we just need to turn you over now.’
When I weakly nodded against the sand beneath my cheek, I braced myself. A weak cry left me as the boys pushed me onto my back, a strained silence following instantly as they looked down at me, holding back the need to hurl.
My chest, cracked, blackened veins throbbing and crawling up my neck. Where the gem had laid once now remained a gaping wound, red and raw, and bleeding out. Blood caked and spilt along the cracks, seeping across the floor like water.
‘B-Bruce,’ I gasped softly, reaching blindly for his hand. He was at my side instantly, taking his hand into mine while cradling my cheek, ‘I’m right here my love.’
‘I-I’m so sorry,’ I cried softly, ‘for everything. You didn’t deserve any of this.’
‘Y/N no-’
‘Please.’
He fell silence at my plea, giving me a small nod as he carefully cradled me in his arms, his heart aching at the whimpers that left my lips.
I weakly turned my head towards my sons, smiling at each of them through the tears that blurred my vision, or was it really tears?
‘My boys, my brave little robins. I’m so sorry for dragging you into this mess. You’re so so strong, each of you in your own way. I-I’m sorry I let you down as your mother …’
‘You didn’t Ummi,’ Damian instantly said, sitting closer beside me, kissing my cheek gently, a smile curling at the edge of my lip as tears spilt down my face.
‘For once I agree with Damian,’ Jason said, trying to smile, but failing to as tears fell down his cheeks, Dick reaching over and squeezing his shoulder briefly. Tim remained silent, his eyes roaming your body, nails digging into his thighs, as if to try and wake himself from a nightmare.
But this was no nightmare. This was real.
As the pain began to dwindle, and a tingle back to run down my spine, I glanced back up to my husband, gasping, ‘I sh-should’ve told you the truth Bruce, about everything. My selfishness got in the way and I’m s-so so sorry. All I wanted was for all of you to be safe …’
Though the heaviness in my arm continued to heighten, I raised it ever so slowly, gently pressing my hand to my Bruce’s cheek, wiping away his tears,
'Just please remember, you were the reason for much of the happiness that I had in my life. I will always love you Bruce Wayne.’
With my lips barely caressing his chin, I couldn’t help but allow myself to fall back into his arms, and into the comfort of what I could only feel as sleep, with the great knowledge that I knew my family were, finally, safe.
Through the heavy weight of silence that fell over me, a whisper, far off, echoed in my ears.
I have you sweetheart … hold on just a little longer …
Tumblr media
'Umi?’
Damian whimpered as he gripped his mother’s hand, shaking it as if to gain attention like a child would. However no response came, the lifeless arm of Y/n shaking raggedly, heavily before dropping back to the ground.
Dick was a mess, looking away from his little brother as the tears plummeted down his cheeks, covering his mouth to hide the sobs that escaped his lips.
And Bruce, he was silent.
Jason was frozen, staring down at the body of his mother, his true mother. The woman who had been more of a loving mother to him than his own blood.
His hands shook as he embraced Tim, the young boy gripping his chest, uncontrollably and unashamedly crying into his older brother’s shoulder.
Staring down at the woman in his arms, he couldn’t really comprehend what had just happened, head shaking in disbelief.
'Y/N? Darling open your eyes …’
She remained unmoving.
'Come on Y/N, please you’ve got to stay awake help will be here soon.’
He turns to Wren who stands behind them, his eyes glistening with tears, his fingertips grazing over the birthmark over his heart.
'Where the hell is the help? Have you sent word for them?!’
'Bruce it’s too late-’
'NO!’
The scream that left Bruce’s lips made his sons jump, all looking to him as his tears fell, landing softly on the face of the woman he loved. The woman who had saved him from consuming himself in darkness and showed him what love meant.
Bruce cradled Y/N’s body to his suffocatingly close, almost waiting for her giggles to erupt and for her to pull away from him. But she didn’t. She remained limp, and silent.
'Please don’t do this … please don’t-please don’t leave me!’ He cried, gently running his hand through her hair, as if to soothe her awake, to ease her pain in some way.
He couldn’t lose you too.

Return the Flames - Chapter 5
All at Dead Bird Studios knew of Amos' (The  Conductor's) ability. How the owl could suddenly erupt into flames if  angered enough. When the studio first opened, Dominic (DJ Grooves) was  told that Amos had his ability under control. Nothing to worry about. No  possible loss of anything from an open flame.
A few years later however, and that control seems to have lessened to a dangerous degree.
It should have just been a simple, week long drive to fix the problem. It really should have been.
Dominic should have asked a lot more questions and should have been prepared for a twist ending.

Dominic counted the next two days as a sort of quiet blessing. The 48 hours passing with relative calmness that made the penguin think something bad was about to happen. Learning from the first night, Domini bought a large cooler. Along with a few bags of ice from whatever convenient store they were close to before arriving at the hotel they were staying at for the night.
The penguin had planned for the first night. A way to  hopefully relax before fully diving into their journey. He was not expecting it all to turn out like it had.
What worried him the most was how subdued Amos had suddenly become. He would either be asleep or completely quiet as they traveled. He would push Dominic to use the bathroom to clean the day’s travel smell off before filling it with ice and hiding himself away. It was such a stark difference to the owl’s regular, bombastic personality.
Dominic honestly missed that loud and confident version of his ‘used to be’ rival. Because the bird before him now just gave off the air of surrender. Which Dominic just hated. But he was unsure how he was supposed to help.
So, they just traveled in silence. Taking in the surroundings, which quickly became dull. The same woods could only be that interest for so long. Even if there was now an incline added to their travel. The valley below just offered more trees.
They were traveling down such a road the afternoon of their fourth day when they approached something strange. It appeared over the crest of the horizon and gave the penguin driving a moment's pause before he realized what he was looking at. A blockade, a strong line of crows stretching around the road that were dressed in black trench coats. Dominic slowed the car down as they reached said blockade, confused as to what was happening. The slower speed woke Amos. The owl furiously scrubbed the sleep away as he looked around. No doubt expecting to see some buildings.
“Are we there?” The owl grumbled weakly.
“Ah, no… We’ve come across something strange.”
“What are ya- What the peck is this?” The owl exited the car to get a possibly better look at the wall of crows before them. “Oi, what are ya peck necks doin’ in the middle of the road!”
“What yourself Amos.” Dominic warned as he joined the owl. “Funny question. Those aren’t your actors, are they Darling?”
“No. They don’t live this far out from the desert. Those peck necks...they don’t look right…”
Dominic didn’t like this. But he had a feeling that just turning around wouldn’t help this situation at all. He put on his best performance smile and addressed the crows before them with his charm. “Good afternoon Darlings. Is there a problem here?”
There was no response. Dominic’s smile slowly slipping away as the silence stretched on.
“Grooves…” Amos’ quiet utterance of his name made Dominic’s worry grow. Turning to face the owl, he saw the other’s attention directed behind their car. The situation became further dangerous when another blockade appeared there as well. Same crows, seeming to double the numbers that surrounded them.
Dominic was now angry. This was, for whatever reason, a trap and nothing that the penguin wanted to be a part of.  “Alright gentlemen, I’m not feeling very welcomed here. Is there something we can help you with.”
“We are not here to be welcoming.” A crow finally spoke from the crowd standing at the front of the car.
“Then why are you here. If you don’t mind me inquiring.”
“We are here to ask you to stand down and to hand the Phoenix spawn you have over.”
Both directors were shocked to hear the sudden request. But Dominic wasn’t going to play this game. He placed a hand on Amos’ shoulder. A silent request for the owl to remain quiet.
“Rather bold of you and your team to make such a demand. We are not a ‘Phoenix spawn’, as you say. We’re just pn a break from our jobs to take a small vacation. See the different sights that this world has to offer.”
“We request you to be silent penguin. We are C.A.W., the Crypto-hunters Advocating for Well-being. We know your vehicle was near and fled the fire that was created at the dinner. A fire that can only be created by a Phoenix. No one who is ‘innocent’ would flee. Now, for the safety of others, turn over the Phoenix spawn to us.”
“I’ll show you spawn.” Amos growled dangerously.
“I don’t believe we have any reason to go anywhere with you.” Dominic argued, tightening his grip on Amos’ shoulders. The crow who had spoken shook slightly, his neck seeming to expand. Dominic assumed their feathers were puffing out in frustration.
“The being you are so determined to project is dangerous. He is not allowed to have this freedom if he is going to harm others. He must be put down before he can cause any more damage.”
That was not a welcoming response. Even Amos seemed to have lost some of his bravado hearing that.
“...I will have to politely decline that request.” Dominic answered, pushing the owl back towards the car.
“This was not a request. You will be handing over the Phoenix, now.”
Dominic didn’t respond. He had a feeling they weren’t going to talk their way out of this. It was unclear what this group was capable of. Dominic, however, wasn’t planning on sticking around to find out.
“What exactly are ya planning here?” Amos asked, actually sounding nervous as the penguin joined him back in the car.
“Something possibly stupid. So, you should enjoy this.”
“What are ya-” Amos yelped when they suddenly shot forward. The murder of crows before them diving away as they zoomed by. “Are ya peckin’crazy!”
“Do you want to go with the quite literal murder group? I don’t know about you, but I would like to survive this.”
The owl didn’t reply. Instead, he turned to the rear window to see if they were being followed. His stomach dropped at seeing the numerous black cars. All gaining ground quickly.
“Uh, Dominic… I don’t want ta pressure ya, but they’re gainin’ ground.”
 “Peck.”
If they weren’t running for their lives, Amos would have revealed in the fact the penguin had just cursed. As it was, he wished Dominic would have been a bit harsher with his word choice. Because the owl had a few words of his own to say. If only his mouth would unstick with the fear running through him.
“How close are they.” Dominic voiced through gritted teeth.
 “Uncomfortably?”
 “That’s not helpful Amos!”
“I don’t know what ya want ta- Back! They’re gonna ram us!” Sure enough, a hard hit landed on the back driver side wheel. Both winced at the sharp change in direction before Dominic corrected themselves. “Peck necks! Can’t this thin’ go any faster?”
 “I’m already pushing hard.”
“Fine, then try and keep it steady.”
Dominic looked over quickly, mouth dropping as Amos partially crawled out of the window, sitting on the car door. “What are you doing!”
“‘M goin’ on the offensive, just drive!”
The penguin did as requested, his heart hammering in his chest. So focused, Dominic was startled when one of the chase cars was actually blasted away and consumed by a large fireball.
 “Amos!”
“Just drive!” The owl scrambled to remain upright as the car was hit again.
“Would you please get rid of the one that’s hitting us!”
“They’re too close, I could hit us too!”
Dominic’s retort died in his throat when he noticed the warning signs of a sharp turn approaching. It became more worrisome when the penguin realized the car wouldn’t turn. “Amos, we have a bit of a problem...”
 “Yer tellin’ me!”
“We have a new problem! The care won’t turn and we’re coming up on a curve!”
Amos turned towards the front of the car, seeing the warning signs they were passing. Over the horizon, the curve itself was starting to grow closer. “Uh...do we have a plan?”
“No, and we’re coming up on it fast!” Dominic winces as they were hit once again. “And our new friends aren’t letting up!”
“I don’t know what ya expect me ta-”
One final hit and they were sent over the edge. Breaking the guard rail, Amos winced as he was hit with the small pieces of flying shrapnel. They flew a few feet in the air before landing hard among the trees and rocks. Amos was flung from the car, hitting the ground and only stopped rolling when he ran, back first, into a tree. Dominic hit his head against the steering wheel from the first impact before being knocked around as the car flipped over. Which it only did once before being halted by trees as well.
Amos was the first to move. His body loudly protesting at being moved. But his mind screamed that they were still in danger and that Dominic might be dead. As quickly as he could, Amos limped his way over to the crumpled car. Wrenching the door open revealed an unconscious Dominic. A wave of relief hitting Amos when he felt a pulse from the penguin. The owl was also happy that he was able to free said penguin from the wreckage with ease.
It was uncomfortable to carry Dominic on his back. But Amos didn’t know how else to move the other to safety. As he started to slowly treck away from the destroyed car, Amos caught movement from atop the hill they’d just plummeted from. The C.A.W. agents were crowded around the destroyed portion of safety rails. All scrambling to find a way down. Without the express route the duo had taken.
Amos didn’t dwell on it. He needed to get away and hopefully find a way to heal them up. His feathers ruffled feeling eyes narrowing on his back as he moved further into the forest.
 ____________________________
Dominic felt absolutely terrible as he rejoined the waking world. His head was throbbing as he attempted to move.
 “Ye’re awake?”
Moving his head, Dominic slowly realized he was resting on Amos’ back. The owl carrying him through the slowly thinning forest.
 “...Amos?”
 “Aye. How ya feelin’?”
“...Wonderful. Like I just got a massage.”
“Good to see yer wit is in full force. ...Seriously, how are ya feelin’?”
 “I don’t think anything’s broken. But...I hurt everywhere…”
“We’re nearin’ a town. We can take a better look when we get there.”
Dominic’s eyes quickly scanned the area, only to find more trees. “How can you tell? It all looks the same.”
“Hear cars and people. If it’s not a town, hopefully we can get a ride ta one.”
It was, thankfully, a town they approached. With a lot of watchful eyes and raised brows as they made their way to the first convenient store they came across. Dominic would have been angry that no one was stepping forward to help. If he wasn’t more concerned about being in constant pain and wanting it to just stop.
Dominic let out a small grunt as he was sat down on a bench outside the store. Amos bending down to examine the penguin, who in turn saw how rough the other appeared.
“You look like how I feel.”
Amos snorted, hands gently running over Dominic’s limbs, chest, and back. “Yer not lookin’ too great yerself, so don’t count yerself out. But I’ll take it as a compliment. ‘M not feelin’ anythin’ broken… Goin’ ta get some supplies. We’ll ya be alright out here?”
“Yeah… I think people are keeping their distance. For some strange reason.”
“Alright, Mr. Comedian, sit tight.” Amos departed, Dominic seeing a predominant limp as the owl moved to enter the store.
The penguin wasn’t sure how long the other was gone. Dominic nodded off a few times before Amos returned, plastic bags full of supplies resting on his arms. He silently sat down on the bench next to Dominic and started to patch the penguin up. Amos was gentle as he administered the medicine and wrappings. It hit Dominic that the owl was probably used to patching up his grandchildren. Not injuries of his caliber, the penguin hoped, but no doubt getting the same care and attention he was receiving.
“There...ya made it out pretty well. All things considered.” Amos commented, breaking an ice pack and pressing it against the knot forming on Dominic’s forehead. The penguin let out a hiss of discomfort, Amos starting to put the supplies away.
“Thank you. Let me take a look at you now.”
 “‘M fine.”
“We don’t have time for your self-sacrificing nature. Let me take a look.”
Amos huffed and pushed the materials closer to the penguin. “Fine.”
 “...Thank you, Amos.”
Dominic was gentle and moved slowly as he checked the owl over. He wasn’t sure if it was Amos’ given heritage, but the owl was surprisingly in tack for being thrown from a moving car. A lot of cuts and bruises, but no broken bones or close to death injuries. Even the leg appeared to just be bruised with Amos needing to remain off it for a while for it to heal. All seemed fine.
At least, until he checked Amos’ back. The owl winced when Dominic touched the wounded area. “Bruised ribs?”
 “Possibly.”
“Let’s not take the chances and act as if they are. Shirt off,” Dominic held back a smile as Amos’ feathers puffed out, “Come now, don’t argue with me.”
“Peck neck.” Amos grumbled, but did as was requested.
Dominic was careful as he wrapped another ice pack gently against the owl’s back. Trying not to invade to close into Amos’ space. The owl practically looked anywhere but at Dominic.
“There...you’re all set. We’ll need to change out that pack every few hours.” The penguin advised as he poured a few pain pills out and handed them over. Amos downing them quickly.
 “...Thank ya…”
“You’re welcome...Darling. Now, let’s find some place to eat. We really need to talk about what happened.”

SHELTER - PROTECT THEM.
The grenade comes soaring in through the window, into the room where they’re holed up, and Crypto’s the only one who sees it at first. Hound’s too busy with the shield battery—and Crypto knows that’s the only thing standing between them and going down completely.
He’s not sure why he does it. The smarter play would have been to let Bloodhound take the hit, escape out one of the other windows, and use his drone to collect their banner.
Instead, he lunges to kick the grenade to the opposite side of the room. In the same motion, he throws himself at Bloodhound, shielding their body with his and giving them the few precious seconds they need to finish the battery.
His own EVO cracks as the grenade blast goes off; he hears it in his ears like glass, feels the shrapnel of the frag pierce the back of his coat. Crypto grunts with pain and clutches onto their arms a little tighter until the noise dies down. No additional ordinance follows.
“—Are you all right?”

>  @deathchasing  —  continued from here.
there is little in Octane to like, legend or man;  Crypto has seen enough, heard enough, and cares to know nothing more. It’s a strange development, even to him: that what small distaste that Park had for Silva could have bloomed and burst, at a startlingly virulous rate, into an anger of such lethal magnitude in Crypto. It’s more than the dislike he harbours for most Legends in the arena, one that very few have earnt their exception from — it’s something finely tuned, something that hardens blade-like when Octane draws near. Whatever it is, it feels jarring and all too personal. Crypto, however, is nothing if not tempered, and he makes fast work of learning to tolerate Silva.
Or so he thought he had.
Tolerance comes easily enough. Their squadmate, with little mettle nor ability to contribute that would warrant his saving, was swiftly left behind in the crossfire at the train yard. There is no Respawn chip to return for. And far more to worry about — gearing up, combing the terrain before them for anyone in search of easy blood — that paying mind to Octane is far from even a second thought.
It’s only when they’ve found refuge in a tiny cluster of buildings surrounded on all sides by cliff, miles from any incoming squads, that Crypto permits himself a thought other than that of survival. His drone, just returned from scouting their surroundings, hovers before him as Crypto peers into his HUD, scanning what remaining data the drone has to offer from its trip. Octane is chattering in the background, as always. Crypto does his best to ignore as he skims rows of diagnostics, loses himself in them rather than in the noise he’s sure Octavio is deliberately making.
It just so happens he logs off his drone at the wrong moment (or perhaps just the right one) to catch the tail end of Octane’s chittery, drug-induced babbling. The rush, Octane had said through what Crypto knows, even beneath the mask, is a wide grin. That’s what he does all this for; and the fans are just a bonus.
( When you have nothing to lose — they have taken everything from you, you have been through hell to get here, you are here because you have to be,
— what the fuck is his excuse? )
And, without warning, something vile and cruel takes hold of Crypto, rooting itself deep into corners of himself unreached and unknown. Jaw unhinges, tightens shut, falls open again as he fumbles for speech in the haze of a sudden and unbridled fury. The shock passes in a moment, washed aside by the vastness of a rage wordless and entrenched in sheer, momentous physicality.
He snatches his drone from the air, swings his arm as he turns to smash the metal — with the strength of all his upper body — hard into Octane’s skull. His hit lands fiercely. Red trickles down Octane’s paling cheek from where a wing scraped deep through the skin, and the colour is all that Crypto sees.
Something in him has severed itself from tempered and stoic demeanour, reared its monstrous head in feral eagerness; it’s what lunges forward, finding purchase for Crypto’s fingers around a thin neck and tightening dangerously. Octane hardly gets out a yell before Crypto’s grip stifles it, and the strangled cry rouses a terrifying surge of glee in his gut.
Until Octane lashes out, flinging metal legs against Crypto’s knee with enough force that Crypto hears something crack. He thinks he hears himself scream, but he doesn’t know, can’t know with the rush of blood in his ears and the fire flooding him head to toe. Hands starving to draw blood, hungry to hurt, claw down into whatever skin and fabric they can reach. Crypto rips the needles out of Octane’s arm, snatches up one of the discarded syringes on the ground (tossed aside from Octane’s last careless high), and plunges the exposed metal deep into bare neck. Octane shrieks, and Crypto tears needle out, drives it again into throat, into collar, into upper arm. Octane struggles, alive — dares, still! to be alive despite everything — and the rage boils, hot and viscous like oil, in Crypto’s veins. Threatening to burst, like a geyser… the geyser.
It’s with foreign strength that he snatches at fabric, digging fingers beneath the thick of the vest, and throws himself and Octane forward. They’re both in the water, Crypto waist-deep and Octane wholly submerged, held underneath with cheek scraping against the rock beneath Crypto’s relentless grip. There is something desperate in Octane’s struggle now, something tremorous and terrified. He surfaces, shaking, and cries out something that Crypto doesn’t understand. The words, whatever they may be, are tinged with something primal and scared.
Good.
Anger erupts once again anew, curling inside his throat in a fierce growl. Crypto tightens his grip, pushes deeper as Octane thrashes, and only relinquishes his grip when the thrashing slows. And, at last, it grows languid, weary, until it arrives at its inevitable halt. Blood pounds hot in Crypto’s head, dizzying, and he lets go, tumbling backwards and down into the water. There he sits, palms scraping against the floor of the pool and breaths leaving him in rasping gulps and huffs, vision blurry until it focuses — catches Octane’s body drifting up, bobbing at the surface of its watery grave.
There’s blood, ever so faint, in the ripple of the water. Just as suddenly as it had manifested itself, the quick anger that held Octane so firmly beneath water breaks.
Crypto lurches for the edge of the pool in a fumbling stupor, but not quickly enough. His arms, weak, slip beneath him and send his upper half crashing against rocky ground. He’s barely dragged himself out of the pool, dead-weight legs sloshing warm water up onto shore, before he doubles over retching. Vomit bubbles in his chest, bitter and pungent, filling his throat and mouth. He throws up, fingers scrabbling against ground, rock digging through fabric and tearing into the skin of his knees. His eyes and lungs burn.
A different sort of rage guts him from the inside now, self-loathing, broiling up in his stomach. It’s not like the first rage, one all-encompassing and better left unnamed; like something festering, that first anger had grown within him and decayed, pressuring within until it became explosive — and, after an age of dormancy, it dug its way out of his soul at last.
Driven his hand, fuelled him with hate enough to kill.
It takes all he has not to collapse into his own puke. (Where he should be, left to rot like the body he left behind, screams something hateful and horrid inside him.) Despite the urge to flee, Crypto plunges back into the water. He wades to Octane’s corpse, wrenches the Respawn chip from where it’s fastened to the inside of a pulseless wrist.
He doesn’t know how he puts ground between himself and the body, with shattered kneecap buckling beneath him and with a tremor that ceaselessly racks his body through.
He finds a crawl space beneath a building, stripped of all useful loot. The space is tight, boxed in on all sides but for the front. Crypto huddles inside, clutches one violently shaking hand with the other, and presses his face into his ruined knees. He doesn’t know how long he stays, chest tight and heaving, the stink of sweat and puke seeping into wet clothes. An insidious terror has seized him whole, seeping pungent like sweat and puke, into muscle and marrow. It keeps him rooted, pressed tight against metal piping and crates that wall him in, until the blue sky fades, bleeding into deep orange.
The buzz of noise in his head drowns the world out so tremendously that he notices that telltale hum of warning too late. By the time he’s wrenched himself out of his crawl-space, legs aching and the skin of his arms scratched raw, the Ring has swallowed him. The edge of the Ring is distant already, and what strength he has left, uneaten by that awful dread, is devoured swiftly by exhaustion. But Crypto, used to running and outrunning, tries anyway to chase what’s already too far gone.
In his blind panic, he misses a step down the steep drop of the hill before him, and he tumbles. Shrapnel tears a bloody line down the side of a calf, and Crypto knows long before he hits the bottom of the slope that, this time, this is as far as he goes.
He lays there, blood and vomit tasting heavy and bitter in the back of his throat,  in the red hot glow of the circle. It burns, he thinks, tastes of something hot and electric. His head feels like fire, like it’s about to burst, and metal sears against the skin of his back. Maybe, he hopes, that fearful rage will die with him here, far outside the Ring — unknown to any but himself and to the first (the only) who fell prey to its explosive pulse.
He loses consciousness there at the bottom of the hill, still trembling, with Octane’s banner clutched tightly in hand.

031 but in a lemme tank the artillery debris for u ur so you’re so sexy aha way
The barrage comes at the worst possible time.
Crypto is left bleeding, shields broken, after fending off a head-on attack from Octane. He hadn’t had time to make it to cover to heal up before Gibraltar was raining down shrapnel and napalm on their team. His eyes scan the surrounding area, searching for something to protect him from what would certainly be a lethal blow. Behind him, Gibraltar’s bombardment shakes the ground and sends Crypto stumbling, tripping towards a nearby building and right into the path of yet another explosion of artillery.
And yet, before the assault manages to wipe him out, Crypto feels the warmth of a body slamming him into the nearest wall, knocking the breath out of him. He wiggles his hands free of where they had been involuntarily pinned to his sides, ready to jab a sharp elbow into his assailant’s stomach, before realizing who exactly was pressed up against him.
“What,” Crypto starts, staring wide-eyed at Mirage, who was leaning over Crypto and wincing as the stray ammunition and debris connected with his shield, “are you doing?”
“What’s it look like? I’m saving your life.”
Crypto’s eyebrows knitted together as he studied the other man’s face, looking for — he wasn’t sure yet. Mirage had pulled a thousand reckless stunts before, sure, but nothing quite like this. Nothing that risked their position and chance at being champions quite this much, especially when a resurrection beacon was so close.
There was no need for it and yet, here was Mirage, taking hit after hit to make certain that Crypto didn’t fall prey to the enemy team. Bangalore was already giving them an earful over the comms, but Crypto couldn’t find the words needed to respond.
Instead, he snapped out of his stupor long enough to grab a handful of Mirage’s scarf and yank him towards the building’s entrance, praying that luck was on their side for only a few moments longer.
“Idiot,” he bites as he drags the other man after him, jaw set and mind racing. “We could have both been killed.”
Under the safety of a roof, Crypto releases Mirage and settles back into his composure, breathing out with relief.
“You’re never going to hear the end of this from Bangalore,” he chides, almost teasingly. Then, with a boldness all too unfamiliar, he adds, “... Get us through this and I’ll consider repaying the debt.”
