According to the Vedic tradition in Hindu religion, numerous customs, fasts, and festivals are observed, among which the Shradh of ancestors holds immense significance. Shradh rituals can be performed on the Amavasya date of every month, but there is a special period from the full moon day of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month when Shradh rituals are performed continuously. This fortnight is called Pitru Paksha.
Historical and Spiritual Importance
The practice of Shradh has been a vital part of Hindu tradition since the Vedic period. Its primary purpose is to pay homage to ancestors and pray for the satisfaction of their souls. It is believed that the water offered during Shradh, known as Pitru Paksha, brings peace and salvation to the souls of the departed. The period from the full moon of Bhadrapada month to the new moon of Ashwin month is called Pitru Paksha in the Hindu calendar.
Significance of Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha is a significant time when ancestors are believed to visit Earth for 16 days to receive offerings from their descendants. Performing Shradh during this period ensures the peace of the ancestors’ souls and removes the effects of Pitra Dosh, bringing blessings and prosperity to the family. The ritual involves offering Tarpan, Ardhya, and Bhaag to the ancestors. According to the Puranas, performing Varshika Shradh in holy places (Teertha Kshetras) is considered highly meritorious.
Who Can Perform Shradh?
Mainly, the son has the right to perform the Shradh of his father. If there are multiple sons, the eldest son should perform the rituals. In the absence of a son, the wife, elder brother, grandson, great-grandson, daughter-in-law, or nephew can perform Shradh.
Rituals of Shradh
For the Pitru Paksha ritual, one should wake up early, bathe before sunrise, wear clean clothes, and take a pledge to perform Shradh. Satvik food is prepared with devotion, and offerings are made in front of the deceased family member’s photo. After prayers and seeking blessings, the Brahmin is fed and given donations. The remaining food is offered to cows, crows, dogs, and insects, after which the family partakes in the meal.

In Gita Adhyay 18 Shlok 62 and Gita Adhyay 15 Shlok 4, it is said that after obtaining Tatvgyan from a Tatvdarshi saint, destroying ignorance with that Tatvgyan, then one should search for that supreme abode of the Supreme Lord.

Shradh (Pitru Paksha)
Ancestral Blessings, Date, Rituals, and Significance
In the Hindu tradition, various customs, fasts, and festivals are celebrated, among which Shradh (Pitru Paksha) holds a significant place. This period is dedicated to paying homage to ancestors, ensuring their peace and salvation through specific rituals.
Significance of Shradh
Shradh rituals have been practiced since the Vedic period with the purpose of honoring deceased ancestors and praying for their souls’ satisfaction. It is believed that offering water during Shradh brings peace to the ancestors’ souls. According to Hindu belief, human life is a precious gift attained after many cycles of birth and rebirth, and performing Shradh is considered a son’s duty to his ancestors.
Importance of Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period from the full moon day of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar. It is believed that during this time, ancestors visit the earth to receive offerings. By performing Shradh with devotion during Pitru Paksha, the souls of ancestors attain peace, and family members receive their blessings, mitigating any effects of Pitra Dosh (ancestral debt).
Rituals of Shradh
On the designated Shradh date, individuals wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. They pledge to perform Shradh and donate for the peace of their ancestors. Satvik food is prepared, and offerings are made to the deceased family member’s photograph. The rituals include:
Tarpan: Offering water to ancestors.
Pind Daan: Offering rice balls mixed with sesame seeds.
Feeding Brahmins: Serving food to Brahmins and seeking their blessings.
Offering food to animals: Feeding cows, crows, dogs, and other creatures.
Performing Shradh
Traditionally, the eldest son performs Shradh. In the absence of a son, the wife, elder brother, grandson, great-grandson, daughter-in-law, or nephew can perform the rituals. The rituals are considered especially meritorious when performed at holy places (Teertha Kshetras).
Dates for Pitru Paksha 2024
Pitru Paksha in 2024 starts on September 17 and ends on October 2. Specific dates and corresponding Tithis (lunar days) and Nakshatras (constellations) are as follows:

October 2, 2024: Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Ashwina, Krishna Amavasya)
What to Do for Departed Souls
Tirth Shradh & Tarpan: Performing Shradh and Tarpan on the banks of the Ganga can elevate the deceased soul to higher realms.
Yagya & Pooja: Conducting detailed Yagyas and Poojas ensures happiness and peace for the departed soul.
Godaan: Donating cows (Godaan) is considered a powerful act that removes obstacles and elevates the soul to heaven.
Bhandara for Brahmins: Organizing a feast for Brahmins brings peace and happiness to the departed soul.
Feed Gaugrass: Offering green grass, wheat bran, and jaggery to cows, as it is believed that whatever is fed to cows reaches the ancestors and satisfies them.
Conclusion
Pitru Paksha is a sacred time for Hindus to honor their ancestors and seek their blessings. By performing Shradh rituals with devotion, one not only brings peace to the departed souls but also ensures the well-being and prosperity of their family.
