would u ever elaborate on why you think no love deep web is about being trans? ive been thinking about it since u made that post and i absolutely see where ur coming from.. so im curious about your personal interpretation (if u dont mind ofc!)
mmmmh sorry this has been in my inbox for SO long but i just. got super busy
anyways the chorus of lil boy is definitely the thing that resonates the most with me:
“fear over pride
flood you can’t hide
face of a woman
tears of a child”
this is basically.....exactly what dysphoria feels like. being too scared to be out but everything you’re experiencing is such a big part of you that you can’t hide it and you have to tell someone. feeling like your identity as the gender you are (in this case & my case, a man) is stunted bc you didn’t have the chance to grow into it. personally the coming out timeline for me was basically going from “girl” to “man” with no time to indulge the “boy” category. this can leave one feeling emotionally immature which is where the “tears of a child” line comes in. the rest of lil boy is just like typically aggressive and paranoid par for the course death grips but i put it all in the context of the chorus tbh.
also artificial death in the west is, i wouldn’t say trans coded bc coding is intentional and that’s almost definitely not what death grips meant by it but i’m gonna call it....heavily trans-relatable. the first verse especially here are some lines:
“i’m barely there, i’m everywhere
heavy thin air, sahara mascara
smeared, end of an era
tracks on hera’s peacock thighs
china white skies
ivory of my leper eyes
tone of sighs off nylon lips
where you running now?”
“accustomed to these satin glitches
dripping from my casket’s inners
charmer play me out the basket
last image i saw was splintered
my reflection, i wasn’t in it
in slow motion i give in”
“tomorrow didn’t come
some say it’s hiding
but they’re the ones who’ve hidden”
like topically and from the title it’s very fucking clearly about death but if you choose to interpret it the way i do there’s something more to it. i relate it to my personal fear of being dead (maybe by my own hand?) and people remembering me as a girl. the lines “sahara mascara smeared end of an era” and that second passage i posted are very heavily relatable to the experience of giving into dysphoria and dying because you feel like you can’t be you (“my reflection, i wasn’t in it...”)
also that third passage i posted. like wow. i’m reaching super hard with this probably but it sounds exactly like when people wait and wait for you to become something they want you to be. when people say it’s a phase or hold onto the weird hope that you’ll give up your identity and be more palatable. “but they’re the ones who’ve hidden.....” that’s for real what intolerance is. refusal to see you for you and it frustrates you and makes you feel invisible.
also i think it’s worth mentioning the song title. trans people often a) use the language of death to refer to their transition (e.g. deadname, “the old me is dead”, “i’m finally living”) and/or b) allude to elements of artifice & fakeness pre-transition (“living a lie,” “pretending to be a girl/boy,” etc). put that together - artificial death. it’s almost plausibly intentional
the rest of the album is like i said, a journey of insanity inducing paranoia, which can have a lot of meanings and causes and is pretty standard death grips fare. being trans can absolutely exacerbate introspective paranoia tho. like the transness can (and has, for me!) cause someone to feel like what no love deep web feels like.
that’s my rant and i know this is a reach but it’s really just a personal interpretation, i’m not saying this is what dg meant to do, because it almost certainly wasn’t. cis people don’t write trans metaphors intentionally and if they do it’s NOT this accurate. whatever it is about just happens to sound exactly like a trans metaphor and i’m allowed to interpret it like that because art is free

18. Pu-erh tea: What is a book you can recommend to others? *Me, a self proclaimed book worm, tries and remembers any books I’ve actually read* One that always stuck with me is ‘The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips’ by Michael Morpurgo, which I first read when I was quite young and just loved!
24. Hot chocolate: Do you have (a) stuffed animal(s) sitting in your room? Which one(s)? I don’t have any stuffed animals, but I do currently have a dog on my bed with me if that counts 😂
27. Kombucha: What do you order on a pizza? Normally just pepperoni, I’m boring like that!
#there is another book i'd recommend but I can't remember the title of it 🤦♀️😂#and i'm not sure where it is either it could be in scotland#showyouhow

far in time, baby don't dance, and problems!
The first song I ever heard by mother mother was the stand so this album is kinda special to me because of that. It's not my favorite album but it's a nice combination of their older sound (like oleander) and newer stuff (baby don't dance). Despite it not being my favorite it's still my most listened to album by them according last fm so take from that what you will
Thank you so much Andy!!!! 🤠💙

Thank you Andy!
3: first song you fell in love with?
Somebody told me was their first song I heard and I love it but tranquilize shook me to the core, it was life changing and I was obsessed with it. It's turned me from a casual to an actual fan and it's the reason I'm here today and I owe it everything.
12: any song you just aren't a fan of?
Ok everyone who is following me for a bit knows I really can't stand goodnight travel well. Nothing against the lyrics it's the music that just makes my skin crawl and I want to run away from it as fast as I can. Not much of a fan of almost all the closing songs and it general the ones with the slowest tempos: everything will be alright, my list, have all the songs been written and some kind of love are my least favourite
41: if you were interviewing the killers what would you ask?
One time in the group chat I made a list but one was definitely something too rude and intrusive so I won't say it (and I would never ask him something like that). But in general I would ask about all the creative process behind every single song? I love to hear all about that shit. I would also coerce brandon into revealing the true meaning behind some of his songs I know he now keeps interpretations open bc I just want to hear his takes on them

marina and the diamonds- an album that shaped your personality? i think Horses by Patti Smith definitely changed me the first time I heard it
car seat headrest- favorite relatively unknown artist? hmm this is a tough one… probably Goblin Cock
houndmouth- a song to listen to as the sun sets? Follow your bliss by the B-52′s
the kooks- song to dance to in your room? The glitzy hive by neon indian!
Thanks Andy! :0)

Thanks andy!!
8. Do you have a unique personal interpretation of any of their songs?
Yeah, i’ve got a few that i have my own idea about! one of them is i can’t stay: so i know that in reality it’s about brandon struggling with trying to balance being a musician out on the road all the time with being a dad and family man, and how hard it is to leave tana and the boys all the time. but i also have an interpretation that it’s part of a trilogy with this is your life and joyride: the prostitute candy from this is your life is the same prostitute the narrator hooks up with in joyride. but instead of just being a one night stand, he ends up falling in love with her and visiting her frequently during i can’t stay (”and there are twisted days that i take comfort//and i’m not the only one”) and envisions being able to settle down with her and have children (”now there’s a majesty at my doorstep//and there’s a little boy in her arms//and we’ll parade around without gameplan, obligation, or alarm”). The narrator knows that he can’t stay with her and that these dreams can never come true, but it doesn’t stop him from hoping.
24. The band chooses to finally make good on the cover album they promised us in 2009. Which three songs do you most want to make the album?
oh man, i am WAITING for this covers album, lemme tell ya. i’m gonna cheat and do 3 live covers they’ve already done that i want studio versions of and 3 songs they haven’t covered but i really want them to. so three that they’ve done i want are girls just wanna have fun, starlight (i think with proper time and maybe a key change they could really do a solid cover of this song and redeem the attempt at lollapalooza a few years ago), and there is a light that never goes out. as for new ones i’d like to hear: faithfully by journey (PLEASE), so cruel by U2, and you might think by the cars 👌🏻
27: Got any favorite quotes? Lyrics or interviews.
oof, so many. for lyrics it has to be “may your limits be unknown” from be still. and for a quote, “i really do believe that the world is better with The Killers in it” that’s super cheesy and soft, i know, but so am i. i’m so thankful for this band and their music and all of the people it has brought into my life. my life is genuine made better thanks to them 💖
send me Killers asks!

Thanks Andy!!
14. Do you think Battle Born was good enough?
Ahh, the age old question. In short, yes and no. The album was solid and I like it because I love TK and their discography as a whole. BB featured some of Brandon’s best vocals and I genuinely love some of the songs on there (Flesh and Bone, Runaways, and Battle Born). That being said, the band wasn’t collaborating like it used to and some songs fell flat, esp live. It could have been a lot better and I think Brandon was brave to admit that they were capable of a lot more. (this was kinda long, whoops)
20. What kind of sound do you want from TK5?
This is a hard one! I remember there being an interview/rumour somewhere saying the boys were open to a more jazz influenced record, similar to Day and Age so I’m pretty excited if that ends up being true! I just want them to experiment a bit more, esp considering BB and WW were ballad-heavy.
53. Did you get into any bands because of the band?
Yes!!! I love TK because they’re so open about their influences. Just to name a few obvious choices:
New Order
the Smiths
Interpol
the Strokes
the Cars
the Cure
and pretty much any artist that TK has covered in the last decade omg
