Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Álvarez Defends Titles Against Undisputed Junior Middleweight Champion Charlo Saturday, September 30, Headlining SHOWTIME PPV® From T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas
NEW YORK – Boxing superstars Canelo Álvarez and Jermell Charlo faced off for the first time on Tuesday at a kickoff press conference in New York to preview their blockbuster showdown that headlines a SHOWTIME PPV (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) on Saturday, September 30 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Canelo Promotions will present the Premier Boxing Champions Pay-Per-View.
The undisputed super middleweight world champion Canelo will take on the undisputed junior middleweight world champion Charlo in a historic matchup that will pit two reigning undisputed champions against each other for the first time in the four-belt era.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Canelo Promotions and TGB Promotions, are available through AXS.com.
Here is what the press conference participants had to say Tuesday from Palladium Times Square:
CANELO ÁLVAREZ
“Thank you to Jermell for taking this fight. I’m very happy to be in this position and to be in big fights. Jermell is a great fighter who takes on big challenges, just like I do. I always take risks.
“Jermell is a great fighter, and this is a fight that’s been out there as a possibility for a long time. Now is the correct time for this fight.
“I’m gonna put everything into the ring. My experience, my power, and my skills. It’s going to take everything to win this fight. It’s going to be a great night for the fans.
“It’s good that people are saying I’ve lost a step. It’s fine. I know why I didn’t look as good in my last two fights. I know why, and I’m different now. I’m preparing now for a different type of fighter.
“I’m 100% focused on this fight. Then we’ll see what happens after. Everyone wants drama, and for us to fight on this stage, but when two fighters are 100% focused like we are right now, it’s gonna make it a great fight in the ring.
“I have everything that he says he has as well. I have experience, and I’ve been in this position a lot of times. That’s why we’re here. We’re going to find out if he’s got enough on September 30.
“I love being in these kinds of fights. Stay tuned on September 30 because this is gonna be a great night for boxing.”
JERMELL CHARLO
“This is a long time coming. Canelo and Eddy are legends in the game of boxing. They’ve put on great shows, and I want to be the one that gets in there and takes it all away from them.
“Me and my brother Jermall have been putting on for boxing, and it’s our time now. A lot of people are worried about the wrong things. When you want to win something this big, you have to risk it all.
“I just want to quiet my haters and doubters and turn non-believers into believers. I’ve watched a lot of great people in the sport of boxing, and now I think this is the best moment for me to leave my mark. With two great fighters in there, you get nothing but fireworks. When this fight presented itself, it was a no-brainer to make this happen.
“I’m gonna train my ass off and be intelligent. I know I’m moving up in weight, but who cares? That won’t stop me from getting in there and doing it the way I do it. I’m excited for this moment.
“My heart, desire, and determination will give me what I need to win. I guarantee a great night and that you’re gonna hear some lions roaring.
“I don’t have any excuses. Whatever happens, happens. I came here to win this fight. I’m not laying down. I don’t care what anyone says.
“I’m so proud to be one of the fighters who’s able to get in there and step up and fight the best. I’m gonna be training my ass off. Tune in on September 30. Be there or be square. We’re gonna turn this into a whole new ball game.”
EDDY REYNOSO, Canelo’s Trainer and Manager
“Here we are in New York, once again announcing what will be one of the best fights in recent memory. Styles make fights, and I believe that both Charlo and Canelo possess the kind of contrasting styles that fans will love to see in a fight.
“Charlo is a great champion and has a great trainer in as Derrick James. He is a great fighter with a big heart that has gotten up off the mat after losing, and that makes him even more dangerous. He lost, but he also redeemed himself and showed that you can redeem yourself to earn big fights like this one.
“This will definitely be a challenge. Charlo is capable of ending the fight at any moment, and we must be ready for anything he might do.
“We know it will be a tough fight, but we are always ready. You will all see a great fight, and you will also see a very different Canelo compared to the one you saw during the last few fights.”
DERRICK JAMES, Charlo’s Trainer
“This is a fight that Jermell Charlo has always wanted. It’s the type of fight he’s needed to put him into super superstardom. Canelo is a great fighter with a great trainer, and they’ve been so consistent over the years. It’s hard to do that in boxing.
“It’s gonna take Jermell being the best version of himself. He’s gonna have to be focused in training camp and focused in the fight. He’s gonna get what he needs to get because of the focus he has and because he knows he has to be himself.
“Jermell should be comfortable with the weight on fight night. He’s daring to be great. He’s all about stepping up and taking the challenges. He wants to be undisputed in two weight classes at the same time.
“It’s all about us coming in and doing what we do best. Both guys are gonna try to do whatever they can do to come out successful. It’s gonna be a great and exciting night of boxing.”
TOM BROWN, President of TGB Promotions
“September 30 will be another night of history. It’s impressive what both men have accomplished to become undisputed. And we also have the back-to-back Trainer of the Year winners in, Eddy Reynoso and Derrick James, up here as well. It’s everything you would want for a mega-fight.
“Canelo is truly one of the sport’s best ever. He’s a hero in Mexico and universally respected. He’s a throwback fighter who takes on all challengers, and he’s boxing’s biggest star.
“Jermell will bring everything he’s got to this fight. He’s cleaned out the division and beaten every fighter he’s faced. He’s not just convinced he can win this fight, he’s convinced he will.
“This is a classic old-school fight with two guys who can really crack. It will come down to who can handle themselves under fire. It’s a super fight you don’t want to miss.”
STEPHEN ESPINOZA, President, SHOWTIME SPORTS®
“Coming off some of the biggest and most anticipated fights in recent memory, we have a special one on September 30. This is another matchup with historic implications, the first bout in the four-belt era pitting two undisputed champions.
“Regardless of who you are rooting for, these two men are among the elites in boxing. Both have historic achievements. Canelo has defeated 18 world champions in his career. He has fought at least one world champion every year for the last 10 years.
“Jermell Charlo is the first undisputed 154-pound world champion in the four-belt era. He could join Terence Crawford as the only male boxer to become undisputed in two weight classes in the four-belt era.
“This event is a rare opportunity to witness greatness. Greatness means not being satisfied with being the first and only four-belt undisputed super welterweight champion. Greatness is pushing for more, more challenges, more history, continuing to test the limits of your own performance. Greatness is taking tough fights and big challenges when you don’t have to.”

Finally saw this fight! Super late I know but I just realized my new paramount+ subscription came with showtime boxing. Got it just in time for it the die 🫡 Anyway I'm mostly a hardcore MMA fan who only recently started following boxing, even though I watched a lot of the big fights in the 00's and 10's growing up, but holy shit I like this guy. Again, I'm a boxing white belt, but he fights so ummm ugly? He uses his long body in weird ways that are somehow also brilliant at times? Like his defense is good but he does get hit but he kinda just eats it? Straight face. He smiles sometimes. He's so weird in my opinion but god damn is he ferocious once he starts rolling downhill on you. He kinda reminds me of Nate and Nick Diaz, who also fight ugly and look drunk half the time but then all of a sudden it's the second half of round 2 and their landing 5 piece combinations on you. Obviously their not elite boxers but idk that's the MMA connection I had watching the fight. If Nick or Nate grew up boxing full time and developed real power they probably would fight a lot like Benavidez.
David Benavidez in a great vertical stripe set for his win last night over Demetrius Andrade in Las Vegas
#david benavidez#demetrius andrade#showtime ppv boxing#regrettable purchase tbh#but it was only 3 bucks a month for 3 months!#they got me in a very vulnerable stage in my life okay#and A24 is moving to MAX so what is even the point of having this#oh and they have bellator too#which is also now dead#sigh#it's okay 3 months is plenty of time to scratch some movies off my watchlist#and to also go back and watch past showtime and bellator fights i missed#i promise I won't do what I always do and forget till the day after the deal ends and I end up paying full price for a product I regret#i swear I'm an adult

Jarrett Hurd vs Erislandy Lara: April 7, 2018
Context - ProBox TV is a YouTube channel for boxing. They have talk shows, post news, and highlights but the thing that makes them unique is that they host fights. And not just random fights. While the hole PBC left when Showtime pulled out of boxing is slowly being filled, there were a lot of fighters in the umbrella PBC promotion that kind of just fell by the wayside. Former world champions that did not get picked up and did not have big time promoters behind them to help them build or rebuild their careers. And that's where ProBox shines as a boxing platform. They get legit world class fighters on the rebuild and give them an opportunity to get back to the world level, or in some cases breakout. If you watched the Crawford PPV, you might have seen David Morrell face off with a guy named Radivoje Kalajdzic. Kalajdzic is a ProBox vet who took out former world champion Sullivan Barrera earlier this year, lining him up for that fight. Their most successful rebuild story? Angelo Leo just had a KO of the Year contender to take a world championship up at featherweight. Another successful ProBox rebuild project. Cool stuff.
All that to say, if there's anywhere for a guy like Jarrett Hurd (23-5, 17 KOs) to go, it's ProBox. Hurd was once the super welterweight world champion and seemed to be on course to becoming a proper star in the sport. He was exciting, had big wins, and was knocking folks out. Then he got cracked. J-Rock dropped him en route to a decision loss and then he would lose two his next three. All of a sudden, Hurd is 2-3 in his last 5 after looking damn near unshakeable. So he's looking to rebuild his career up at middleweight. He is set to face off against another former super welterweight world champion on the rebuild path, Jeison Rosario (24-4-1).
Hurd and Rosario will fight on the ProBox TV YouTube channel this Wednesday (Aug 21).

Spence vs. Crawford SHOWTIME PPV® Takes Place Saturday, July 29 in Premier Boxing Champions Event from T-Mobile Arena In Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS – Undefeated WBC, WBA, and IBF Welterweight World Champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. showed off his skills at a media workout in Las Vegas on Thursday as he nears his much-anticipated showdown against WBO Welterweight World Champion Terence “Bud” Crawford which headlines a SHOWTIME PPV on Saturday, July 29 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The four-fight pay-per-view telecast begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will see Spence look to complete his conquest of the welterweight division after first becoming world champion in 2017 before adding 147-pound world titles in 2019 and 2022. The winner between Spence and Crawford will hold the distinction as the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era and likely emerge as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Man Down Promotions, TBC Promotions, and TGB Promotions, are available through AXS.com.
Here is what Spence, along with his esteemed trainer Derrick James, had to say Thursday:
ERROL SPENCE JR.
“This is what I’ve worked for my whole career. I want to be that undisputed welterweight champion of the world, and I’m excited to go up against a great opponent like Terence Crawford to accomplish that.
“I’ve been fighting the best for a long time. When you see all the legends of the sport, they fought each other and made historic fights. That’s what I want to do. Terence is one of the best fighters in the world, and I’m one of the best fighters in the world, so we had to make this happen.
“It’s definitely business as usual, but we’ve still amped up the training because of the opponent I’m facing. Terence can really fight, and I believe that we’re gonna put on a great show and a great performance.
“I’m not worried about being the underdog. People can say what they say and have their opinions. I just have to go prove them wrong.
“I’ve been feeling the buzz for this fight. Anywhere I go, they’ve been asking me about this fight. I knew I had to make it happen. This is what everyone wanted. We have to prove who the man is in the welterweight division and in boxing. The winner of this fight is the best fighter in boxing period.
“Every belt I’ve gotten, I’ve taken from somebody. I beat champion after champion. I’m going through the ringer, fighting the best guys in my division. There’s a big difference between facing a champion and someone without a belt. The guys with the belts have a lot more to fight for.
“I don’t know how much the size will factor into the fight until we get into the ring. They say he’s a strong guy, and we’ll see next week.
“Everybody, make sure you tune into this fight. It’s gonna be an amazing fight. This fight is gonna be a war of attrition. It’s a guts and glory type of fight.
“I don’t think there’s anyone I fought who’s similar to Terence Crawford. His style is different from anybody else. I don’t think Sugar Ray Leonard fought anyone like Tommy Hearns until he fought Tommy, and vice versa. That’s what happens in these historic fights.”
DERRICK JAMES, Spence’s Trainer
“This means everything. From the moment Errol turned pro, he said what he wanted to do. There were so many steps he had to take to get to this point, and now there’s just one more step to take. Being undisputed champion is everything he wanted.
“Our goal is to be able to push like we push in every fight. We’re going to use everything we’ve used to be successful throughout Errol’s career. It’s up to Terence if he can step to that.
“We’ve been training and sparring a lot since Errol last fought, so it’s not like he hasn’t been in the ring. He’ll just have to adjust to Terence’s timing in the fight. It might take a couple of rounds, but once he figures it out, he can do everything he has to do.
“I’m my greatest competition. I’m not worried about who’s in the other corner. It could be anybody. My focus is on being who I am every day leading up to the fight and continuing to compete with myself.
“The perfect performance is a victory. I don’t care how he gets it; it’s just that he gets it. That’s what we’re working for.”

#whatshot #djblaze #onthewatch It's All About @gervontaa @kingryan #davisgarcia #fightnight #boxing🔥👆🏿🥊 Blaze-Legacy Clash The youngins are coming. This highly anticipated matchup is finally here. Two of the best in the World of Boxing in three Division World Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26 Kos) and Ryan “King Ryan” Garcia (23-0, 19 Kos) have officially agreed to meet at a catchweight of 136 pounds on Saturday April 22, 2023, on Showtime PPV from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. From enjoying both press conferences from New York to LA, it’s clear them two warriors are both ready for that smoke. Real Talk! There’s been a lot of tough talk from both sides and predictions of a guaranteed knockout by both combatants. There are no belts on the line but their undefeated records and the possibility of claiming the face of Boxing. The heat is definitely brewing whenever them two are in the same vicinity of one another. Ryan is feeling himself and projecting some serious confidence at the task at hand while Gervonta has yet to show anything different other than his usual never bothered persona. Both combatants clearly carry some serious ammunition in their hands, but it might take more than power to get the job done on that night. Both respective corners will have to produce a serious “game plan” to offset the opposition. Ryan, being the much bigger and longer opponent, possesses a considerable advantage, but “Tank” has always been at a disadvantage in the past, but his boxing IQ and boxing skills have always been the original equalizer aside from his high ko percentage bailing him out. Gervonta’s small stature compared to Ryan’s is a hot topic that can’t go unnoticed but skill for skill, Gervonta has the goods to get the job done regardless of the obstacle ahead and is more proven at this point in his career. It will be up to “King Ryan” to fulfill his destiny of knocking “Tank” off the food chain when push comes to shove when the two combatants meet on Saturday night April 22, 2023, on Showtime PPV from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Regardless of the outcome I expect nothing but fireworks come fight night. Hands Down! Who you got?🔥☝🏿🥊Blazinone.com https://www.instagram.com/p/Cppo6tfgxde/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It has been a weird year for combat sports. Plenty of great fights and cards, but at least partially overshadowed by promotional shenanigans outside the ring/cage. Many of those outside the cage things are coming to a head in 2024.
So here are some things to be on the lookout for in combat sports in 2024.
1. The UFC antitrust lawsuit: Cung Le and the fighters will be going to court come in 2024 barring a Hail Mary from the Zuffa legal team. The outcome of this case, whether it’s the UFC paying hundreds of millions of dollars to the fighters directly or being forced to have less restrictive contracts, could change the entire sport as we know it. It’s the most important thing happening in MMA. As we move closer to the case, I really hope more of the MMA media (outside of Bloodyelbow) starts talking about it more.
2. PFL-Bellator merger: for as pessimistic as I have been about this, I really hope the PFL team manage to get this thing off the ground. They’ve got a new deal with ESPN that includes some shoulder programming. They’ve got one of the hottest names in combat sports right now with Francis Ngannou (also that one Paul brother). They’ve got a good roster that has a bit of depth to it now. I want them to succeed, I’m just not confident the team that tried to sellout MSG on NYE can figure it out.
3. ONE Championship - MMA, $$$, and BS: despite putting on amazing fights, I have to imagine 2023 will be another year where ONE operates deeply in the red. With rumors of their investors in Qatar, growing tired of losing money, ONE needs to start making cash. I can’t imagine their recent addition of $40 PPVs will be the cash cow they need, but it’s showing some desperation for liquidity. But that’s not the only trouble bubbling with the promotion. ONE put on something like 20 kickboxing bouts and most of their MMA champions fought at most once, or not at all. The focus on Muay Thai and a handful of grappling “super” fights has come at the cost of MMA fighters and kickboxers. So much so that a handful of them are openly complaining and were attempting to leave the promotion before legal action was taken to keep them in house. ONE has booked a couple big MMA bouts for 2024, but without booking of younger talent there’s really no infrastructure to build future challengers. And that’s concerning for a promotion that wants to run cards in the US and potentially land a big TV/streaming deal.
4. K-1 ReBoot - More J-Kick disappointment : K-1 ReBirth aka ReBoot has been a disaster. While the first event produced a new exciting Chinese Light Heavyweight challenger and was main event Ed by a terrific fight between Kaneko and Kumara, the card was streamed on the Quintet YT channel because something kept it off DAZN and FITE TV. And while Rebirth 2 was fire start to finish, the card was only accessible via VPN and ABEMA as their international streaming rights still had not been settled. If K-1 wants to be a globe trotting promotion that does business in Europe, China, and the US, they need to sort all this out.
5. PBC post Showtime: Showtime Boxing is dead after almost 40 years of business, meaning one of the last bastions of boxing on US TV. It was recently announced they will continue with PPVs being broadcast thru Amazon prime (and traditional providers) but it’s unclear how many events they will hold and if this will exclusively include PPV? Word is they are shopping around for another partner but this has understandably been a big blow for the entire industry. 2024 is an odd year for PBC, especially if they have to trim down their roster because they can’t get everyone fights.
6. Glory Kickboxing - What next?: Glory kind of limped thru 2023. While they had some highs, there were a lot of events and stuff that fell flat. Relying on heavyweights is always a gamble like that I suppose. But the guy they got to fight for the welterweight title against Endy Semeleer last week had like 3 fights to his name? So in an effort to build contenders and momentum, they’re bringing back the one night four man tournaments of Spike era Glory. We’ll see if that works for them. They also have that big heavyweight Grand Prix coming up apparently so we’ll see.
Feel free to add your own
