An entry for the Global Impact Garden category at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, UK, was ‘The Forest Will See You Now’, designed by Michelle Brandon. This walk-through garden alerted visitors to the benefits of being in a forest and the calming effects of trees which were represented by plantings of the deciduous broadleaf Betula pendula (birch), a few evergreen Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) and an understorey of Corylus avellana (hazel) and Acer campestre (field maple), all native woody species in the UK.

I spent a wonderful afternoon at the @nationaltrust Lytes Cary. A beautiful manor house close to Somerton in Somerset. The half hardy perennial Digitalis × valinii ‘Foxlight Rose Ivory’ (foxglove hybrid) was creating a group vertical flower spikes in this show garden at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, UK. This hybrid is a cross between Digitalis canariensis and Digitalis purpurea.

Today’s #oneadayplant is very dear to me as it was grown for a show garden equally important to me. Unlike normal, this is a pic from the past. 2016 actually. We grew this for @herveybrookes @dogstrust #hamptoncourtflowershow garden. Cosmos ‘Xanthos’. . This beautiful annual plant is unique as a pale yellow flowered Cosmos resembling a normal C. bipinnatus type. It fitted the colour theme of Blue and Yellow as a wonderfully cheery primrose-yellow daisy flower. . The garden is my favourite one that PHB and I have worked on together and it was an honour to be part of the team. Many of the reasons for this are listed in Paul’s profoundly moving post from earlier today, that I encourage you to read and see the pictures, but most of all because it was a joyous celebration of life and love at an impossibly tough time for him. . Everything about the garden was perfect despite the circumstances. An incredibly elegant and understated design, mature and unmatched. . Makes me happy and sad to think of it, but I choose to be happier over sad as that seems most fitting. . For me, this plant, will forever be intwined with that garden, the celebration of love and the life and loss of dear friend. A powerful and enduring reminder of our friendship. . Plants can do a great deal to keep the memories of people and events alive in our minds.
