if asakura and obata didn't want anybody to think their characters are gay then they shouldn't have kept making show-ha shoten bc WHAT is this latest chapter. why is jun so heartbroken and apologizing to tetta about failing him. why is the biggest tsukkomi gag about how tetta just wants jun to be his partner. the june chapter hasnt come out yet but happy pride month in advance bc if these characters dont kiss in the next chapter im going to be surprised

REVIEW | "Show-Ha Shoten!" - Volume Two | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade

There’s a science to comedy. It’s not just about getting on stage and telling jokes; you also got to test the air and the waters that engulf it. Depending on the audience, a great joke can sometimes fall on its face; a stupid joke, on the other hand, can potentially bring the house down. Show-ha Shoten! demonstrates this strongly in its second volume, as our manzai duo aims for the top.

Beginning where the first volume ended, Azemichi and Taiyo are prepping for the first comedy competition. Win, and they can grow to become the next big manzai duo; lose, and the dream is as dead as a Monty Python parrot. Knowing what kind of competition they have, Azemichi and Taiyo decide to change their act last-minute. The end result is a comedy bit that plays with a simple fact: if done enough times, anything can be funny.

It goes without saying that Azemichi and Taiyo’s bit, which involves feeding animals at the zoo, is a simple one. But how it’s presented is what makes it comedy gold. As Azemichi tries one too many times to feed the animals, the buildup to the punchline grows bigger and bigger. Taiyo, playing all of the animals and the zoo manager, keeps things at a regular pace, until he switches things up to make the joke run faster. Not only is it presented well thanks to Takeshi Obata’s art, but its pacing is pitch-perfect thanks to Akinari Asakura’s writing.

There is a Show ha Showten! shaped hole in my heart

For your 2024 consideration:

Akane Banashi- ongoing, the female shonen jump lead we need and deserve, rakugo, girl power, all my homies hate Zensho Arakawa and you will also feel compelled to physically fight a cranky old fictional man.

Show-Ha Shoten!-ongoing, monthly, stand-up comedy, by one half of the death note duo (art by Takeshi Obata) and Akinari Asakura, would die for Broken Glass Slipper and currently rooting for them to singlehandedly destroy the patriarchy.

Mission: Yozakura Family-ongoing, on its last leg, has an anime premiering in spring and you have no excuse at this point to keep ignoring its existence. Has just over 20 volumes and is currently the fourth longest running manga in the weekly shonen jump line-up rn (don't quote me on that). Centers around a super-powered spy family and there is a character/sibling for everyone. Has a power creep that has yet to jump the shark like certain other series. MC is literally an unproblematic fav king.

Blooming Love (Hanninmae no Koibito)-ongoing, biweekly, romance/slice of life, a romance where you don't have to wait 50 something chapters for two lovesick idiots to confess. Romantic progress is made pretty steadily. Last year of high school + beyond. The main couple is super adorbs. Serialized in Shonen Jump + and can be read on mangaplus.
