shovel nosed guitar fish ?? :DD
Animal of the day: Shovelnose guitarfish!
The shovelnose guitarfish is a species of ray that lives around California. They can live up to 11 years and are around 120-137 cm long when fully grown.
Tumblr media
They have characteristics of both rays and sharks, and were mistaken for sharks when they were initially discovered because of this. They are named guitarfish because their shape resembles that of a guitar!
Tumblr media
They eat crabs, worms, clams, and sometimes other fish.

Fish of the Day
Today's fish of the day is the shovelnose guitarfish!
Tumblr media
The shovelnose guitarfish, scientific name Pseudobatos productus, is a common ray. Named for the guitar-like shape of their body and the particularly pointed nose, this fish can be found along the Pacific coast. From San Francisco, to the gulf of California, and possibly as low as Mazatlan, Mexico. These fish live in subtropical-temperate regions spending their time along the sea bed and away from large animals. TFound around rocky reefs and soft or sandy bottomed areas, the depth range is anywhere from 1-91 meters, but they prefer to live 1-13meters.
Tumblr media
The diet of the shovelnose guitarfish is dependent on their benthic lifestyle, as animals living exclusively on the seabed. They prey on crabs, worms, clams, and small fishes also living along the seafloor. During the day this fish lies in wait until prey comes close enough to it, at which point it will lunge out swallowing prey whole. But, during the night the shovelnose guitarfish actively hunts the sea floor, looking for unsuspecting animals. They tend to hide during the day as they are regularly predated on by seals, sharks, whales and large fish.
Tumblr media
Some of the more interesting biological realities of the shovelnose guitarfish is in the gills and eyes. The gills are particularly delicate, and as such this guitarfish pumps water in through spiracle holes on the top of the head, running water over the gills. Filtering through the openings and out. This allows them easy breathing despite their stationary ways hiding on the sand. On the other hand, the eyes of the shovelnose are more extensive than most other cartilaginous fishes, as they have many larger than average projections connected into the brain. This gives them a better ability to see than most rays and sharks.
Tumblr media
Shovelnose guitarfish give birth to live young, as embryos will feed on the yolk of the egg within the womb. Breeding takes place in shallow bays and estuaries, and after this gestation will take anywhere between 10-12 months. Then, they'll give birth to anywhere between 6-28 pups, and are born during the pupping season of June-October, in the same shallow water breeding takes place in. At their full adult size, they'll get as large as 1.7meters in length, just around the time they reach sexual maturity. These fish will sexually mature by 7-8 years old, and only live around 11-16 years, living through anywhere from 3-9 breeding seasons.

That is the shovelnose guitarfish, have a wonderful day!

shovelnose guitarfish/shovelnose ray
its #funkyfishfriday at the aquarina center here at the ritzoo, this week's funky fish is the shovelnose guitarfish/ray. no you may not play it. this funky guy can be found in moderately shallow waters off the coast of california and the gulf of california. they are NOT mouth breathers.
Tumblr media
they eat dwellers of the seafloor so breathing out of their mouths would be not good! so instead they have funky little holes (spiracles) on the topside of their heads. they pump water through those holes and that gets passed over the gills and out on the bottom side.

Daily Ray Fact:
The Eastern Shovelnose Ray is a species of guitarfish and recent studies suggest this species may have trichromatic colour vision due to the discovery of three spectrally distinct cone visual pigments in the retinae. The eastern shovelnose ray also expresses a difference in tooth and jaw structure according to sex, with males developing a more pronounced lower jaw, longer and sharper teeth, and greater jaw strength to enable males to grip a female's fin during mating.

If we stay really, really still, do you think Monday will sea us? 👀
The flattened body and light brown color of the shovelnose guitarfish is perfect camouflage on the sandy seafloor. Buried with only its eyes sticking out, this resourceful ray lies in wait. When an unsuspecting crab or flatfish wanders by, this patient predator peeks out from its hiding spot, then practically pounces on its prey.

Thinking about Rain going to so many aquariums on his first time touring. The ghouls always loved sight seeing in new cities on days off from performing, but Rain spent so much of his time in aquariums. Elbows deep in a touch tank for 20 minutes because he wants to pet every single butterfly ray and shovelnose guitarfish at least once. Before touring, he had asked the retired ghouls if they wanted souvenirs or what their favorite animal was. Many declined his offer of souvenirs, not wanting the young ghoul to spend their allowance on them. But he still bought them little touristy things, shot glasses, fridge magnets, stickers, t-shirts.
One afternoon Mountain drags him to a gem show because they heard there would be fossils and shark teeth, something right up the water ghoul's alley. Rain spent over an hour marveling at a table of shark teeth, searching for one of a specific species. The young water ghoul had bonded with Mist over their shared love of sharks, he wanted to find her the best souvenir imaginable.
When the ghouls returned home at the end of tour, Rain began to make his rounds to his pack with souvenirs bought for them. He had purchased every pack member little glass figurines of their favorite animals, Dewdrop having the biggest reaction. The fire ghoul literally leaping into Rain's arms over the small glass spotted eagle ray. It took 20 minutes to pry Dew from his arms, who was profusely thanking him for the figurine that would reside on his bedside table for the rest of time.
But Rain was more excited to visit Mist, the find he had made at that gem show had him on edge as he walked into the den of the retired ghouls. He found her in her room, the door open and her head in an old marine biology textbook. One that she had used to teach Rain about certain species of sharks.
Rain cleared his throat, watching her head snap up and in his direction. The ghoulette half expected Alpha to be standing in the doorway, the fire ghoul had a tendency to loom until he was noticed or was forced to make his presence known. "Rain my sweet! You're home" she said, moving the textbook off her lap and motioning for the ghoul to enter.
"I brought you a souvenir," Rain said, entering the room with his hands behind his back "I know it's not much but I couldn't pass it up."
Mist rose from her bed, meeting the ghoul in the middle. "You didn't have to do anything for me sweet, I wanted you to spend your money on you and enjoy your time" she said gently, studying his features.
Rain shook his head, "I know I didn't have to, I just saw it at a gem show Mounty dragged me to and I had to get it for you."
At that moment a small golden box was placed in the ghoulette's hands, a wordless invitation to open the gift. The pair stood in silence as Mist untied the bow that was carefully knotted around the box, time seemingly standing still to Rain who was teeming with excitement. The lid of the box was lifted off slowly before being slammed back on.
"Rain you did not" she said, the surprise evident on her face. She opened the box once more before taking the object into her hand gently, not wanting to break it.
"But I did" he said, the smile plastering his face evident in his words. "I spent an hour at this one booth searching for a lemon shark tooth, I knew there had to be one there."
Mist placed the tooth back in the box, placing it on the edge of the alter in her room mistakenly. The motion was quick and unintentional, as all she wanted was to get her arms around her young water ghoul. "Rain it's perfect, you truly didn't have to do that" she spoke, her voice heavy with the tears brimming in her eyes.
The water ghoul wrapped her in a tigh hug, this was the exact reaction he expected. Aside from the tooth becoming a permanent piece of her alter, that was unexpected part for both of the ghouls.
"I remembered what their teeth looked like, from that textbook you had shown me. I knew it was your favorite shark and I just had to find one." He spoke softly, the ghoulette looking up to him. The pride in her was almost tangible, for the knowledge bestowed upon her protégé coming into good use.
As the hug broke apart, the pair looked toward the box teetering on the edge of her alter. "Well, looks like Lord Lucifer gets a shark tooth" Mist laughed, wiping the stray tears from her eyes.
"Seems like he enjoys the offering, or at least the box it's in" he laughed, the golden box was seemingly a fan favorite.

-whale fall (davy jones’s locker)-
people like to say the universe lives inside of them
here is what lives inside me:
the man standing by the curb at a four-way stop
whose salt and pepper hair has grown to his shoulders
the sign he’s holding says “anything helps.”
and a green carapace embossed with geometric designs
a chaplet of dead flowers dyed a shade of creosote
a fillet of golden brocade and intercosmic eyes traced with kohl
along with sumptuous jade horseshoes for my feet
and Earendel’s helium as my oxygen.
what else, you ask? well, there’s the Challenger Deep
clumps of homoscleromorpha and
schools of febrile flying fish
and towering porcelain sunfish
and pious shovelnose guitarfish.
last but not least:
inchworms of amethyst and jade and ruby
red-eared sliders painted with seaweed
wildebeest and wilder beasts–
all that’s left in the heavenly choir.

Okay but I gotta put this in text because it’ll be too long for my normal tags bullshit
Every time. Every fucking time. This happens in 80% of my dreams and it’s just. HOUGE and I’m so happy it does
In my dream, it’s a place called Duluth. Now I’ve been to actual Duluth. This is not actually Duluth
Dream Duluth has a giant bridge that’s so big that it scares me to drive across. The bridge is so big and the route right into the city has a little section where people will check your passport or vehicle or IDs or something? I’m not sure why. The bridge gives me so much anxiety, and there’s another highway around one of the skyscrapers in that city that also gives me anxiety. For some reason, I think I work in that building. There’s even a dream inside
The city itself is beautiful. Sunny. There’s a big statue by the lake it’s built on, just like the real Duluth. There’s monuments that look like mirrors, even one that looks like the WWII monument in Washington DC. Or is it a Vietnam or Korea monument? Idk. There are hills in the city. It’s not too warm. Much like the real Duluth as well, there’s a restaurant along one of the boardwalks and piers. Unlike it, though, it’s built out onto the water. You can look into the lake from the restaurant and see the guitarfish and sawfish in the water
The beaches are something I always think about. One beach is covered in dark sand. Shark teeth always wash up there. Shark teeth and fish bones. Sometimes it’s small, nestled between that restaurant and a boardwalk. Other times, the beach is longer and pale. Sand tiger sharks and white sturgeon wash up on the shore. There are shovelnose sturgeon in the water. I try and save whatever I can, but sometimes they’re too big for me to carry on my own. Sometimes, when I wade into the water, I get close enough to touch them, but I always stop myself because I’m afraid I’ll bother the animals
There’s another beach as well, one where people always go. Umbrellas and kids and chairs. In the tideline, you can find trinkets and toys that were left a long time ago. They’re not new, rather old and rusted, but sometimes I find interesting keys and metal baubles and gemstones in the sand. I keep them for myself
There’s a white building with a blue haze inside. I don’t know why. It’s homely, but I don’t want to go inside. There was a bloody handprint on the doorframe once. I don’t know why. I think I relaxed after that
There’s a city skyscraper made completely out of glass on the outside. The ground around the statue is made of concrete. I don’t know who that statue is of, but it’s someone important. The statue is bronze
There’s a red brick church in the city. It’s old, and there’s a mosaic courtyard. In the courtyard, there’s a gazebo made of brick. Inside that gazebo is a bell, and the ceiling is made of mosaic tiles that look like an ornate sky. Inside the church there are suits of armour, and the cathedral is impossibly large compared to the outside. The windows are tall, and the light that flits in is always white
I like when my dreams reuse locations from past dreams. like oh cool we doin a bottle episode

Shovelnose Guitarfish (Rhinobatos productus)
The shovelnose is considered to be a primitively developed ray, with many features of both sharks and rays. Because of this, the conservation of this species must be carefully managed to preserve the biological diversity.
