I don't know, there was something about the imagery of the different colors of smoke and the balloons that made me wonder. That and how Philip killed him so easily, I almost thought maybe he was having a breakdown in the burned out shell of his childhood home, flashing back to repressed memories of how Maurice treated him, and found that he had abducted that kid while only subconsciously knowing he had done it. So he dealt with the horror of his past trauma....

And then released the kid as he had been able to release himself. Because I failed to see a connection between Maurice and the boy since Philip was the one who saw him on the train.

I'm not opposed to either explanation of Maurice, whether he was real or a hallucination, but I just started thinking about that a little while after watching the movie.

Dunno if I think Maurice died in the fire. I'd have to watch it again.

no yeah that does make sense! i didn’t really consider it when watching the movie, but i think there’s some solid argument to back up your interpretation. iirc no one else in the movie ever interacts with maurice, and philip even comments that the house is in disrepair, like maybe no one had been living there in a while? i really don’t know if it was the movie’s intention to make us consider this possibility, but it is interesting!

i don’t know if it would really make sense for him to have died in the fire like i said though, because now that i think about it i think it’s implied that the abuse only started after the fire (where philip’s parents were killed).

It's not just TERFs. I saw a trans person claim that a woman without makeup has "an androgynous gender presentation".

Look I'm just saying that for some folks, gender is something innate. For some folks it's not. Both are valid.

You can be your gender without "performing" or "presenting" it. Sorry if you disagree. You can be your gender in any way you want - even without cultural signifiers, even without "performing" it.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here; what I'm trying to say is this:

You don't have to do anything at all to "present" or "perform" as your gender.

you can sit naked on the couch eating chips, and still be presenting as whatever gender you want.

Gender is a social construct, sure, and at the same time, it is something very innate and deep inside me and a part of who I am to my core. You can't "turn off" my gender by saying "gender is a social construct".

I would still be my gender standing naked with no "social signifiers". I would still be performing my gender without those signifiers.

If you're so fuckin' concerned with what society thinks of gender you can't grasp this, get off my blog.
