Their name for you
<-•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•->
Your partner didn’t always call you by the nickname he has for you now, but there was a reason that he started referring to you that way.
Characters: Togata Mirio, Amajiki Tamaki, Shinso Hitoshi, Bakugo Katsuki, Midoriya Izuku, Kaminari Denki, Kirishima Eijiro, Shoji Mezo, Todoroki Shoto
!!!this version is fixed and has the rest of todoroki's part!!!
<-•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•—•→
Mirio
You simply shook the snow that was covering your wings and quickly melted sending a terrible chill up your spine. “Fuck it’s freezing.”
“Oh, come on L/N, it’s not that cold.” Yuyu laughs as she throws another snowball at your back.
Squeaking when the snow slides down your skin between your wings. “Yuyu!” Your quirk picked up making the immediate section around you colder.
Suddenly someone’s hands were on your shoulders. “Now Birdy, calm down a little bit. If you’re cold I can just keep your warm.”
You nearly shoved your classmate away with your wings, but the bandage that was holding two of the four in splints prevented that. “Mirio, I’d beat you if I could.”
“Awe come on Sunshine, don’t pout.”
Sighing a bit, you lean back into his hold. “Fuck off.”
“That’s my Birdy.”
You quirked a brow. “You know if anyone, but you called me birdy I’d probably get suspended.”
Feeling his chest as he hums you roll your eyes before continuing the walk to class.
Amajiki
“Y/N.” you whip around completely forgetting where you were and the pile of fabric that your classmates had stacked on your head to see how much weight could be put on your head before you stopped working-- which was a lot more than they thought so they stopped mid-way.
Your body teetered as you tried to adjust it, so you sat properly-- not a poor example of a shrimp while you were working on your projects-- and you also fell backward because a lot of the fabric was still attached to the bolts. Before you could fall back into the precariously placed bag of sewing supplies, arms pulled you up, so you were at least on the tips of your feet as Amajiki kept you from sustaining further injury than was allowed.
“Sorry Amajiki,” you chuckle a little bit glancing at the mess behind you. “Damn I could have sworn I told them to clean up everything after they were done.”
“Are you okay Lovely?” His face was red, and he would probably pass out if he didn’t calm down soon.
“Yes, I’m fine, but why the nick name all of a sudden?” you chuckle making sure you had a clear space to stand.
You could just see his head practically burning up from how red he was getting. “ I- I
Smiling, you give him a quick hug. “I like it, Tamaki.”
He stood there for a moment before pulling his tall form into a ball on the ground, incoherent rambling comes out, but you did hear a mention of your name and how he thought lovely suited you which made your ears burn as you tried to busy yourself with cleaning up the mess.
Shinso
He could have been stereotypical and called you “Kitten” or “kitty” but no. You didn’t remember a cat in his eyes, and no matter how much he argued that he was a cat person, your personality was not cat like.
“Puppy, are we out of the cat treats again?” Hitoshi asked one day while you were busy cleaning the bathroom.
You nearly took out the tub spout with the speed with which your head came up, recoiling from impact you fell face first into the cloth you were using to clean the tub. There was no worry about chemical burn you were rinsing the tub which made how you hit the tub spout even more confusing. Hitoshi runs into the bathroom to see what happened and if you were okay.
Although it was a bit strained you managed to speak. “Y-yeah we ran out a few days ago I wrote it on the fridge.”
Shutting off the water and checking the back of your head for any sign of blood Hitoshi groans. “Thats not important are you okay puppy?”
There it was again. You look up at him, eyes big as you point to yourself. “You mean me puppy?”
“Yes, you’re…
He didn’t get a chance to finish his explanation as you ignored the slight throbbing in the back of your head as you practically tackled him to the ground into a hug. Defeated and tired, his hand rubs your back as he doesn’t even bother getting off the still very wet floor, he’d have to take a long bath later and he’d be lucky if you let him have that long before you complained that you wanted his attention again.
“Yup, definitely a puppy.” he sighs, as you hug him a little tighter. It was a wonder you weren’t in any specialized field with how much strength you had, but it was mainly due to working at your family’s pet shelter and being the only one confident enough to handle the more playful dogs.
Bakugo
You’d called your boyfriend many different terms of affection depending on how you were feeling. But he very rarely used one for you. It didn’t matter to you because you knew he showed affection differently.
“Tsuki!” You shout from the second floor of your house, you both decided early on to buy a house and whoever wanted to keep it could not that it mattered he had absolutely no plans of leaving you alone at any time.
When you were met with silence you leaned out of the doorway. “Tsuki!” being a little bit louder.
Thinking that he was wearing headphones or something you were about to scream for him. Only for him to tap you on the shoulder. Nearly jumping from your skin, you leaned a little too far on the banister. His arm catching you before you can fall over.
“I just keep catching you don’t I, happy?”
You nearly narrow your eyes at him, but he just pulls you closer before kissing the top of your head.
“Happiness needs someone to be Happy.” he mumbles.
You smile as you hug him tightly. “We gotta replace the banister now, don’t we?”
“Yes, we do, the hell were you yelling about anyway?” he frowns looking into the room you were just in.
You pull him in and point. “Ah, um… we should probably call an exterminator.”
Midoriya
You roll your eyes as Midoriya was once again showing off during agency training, everyone was doing their best to get stronger and not everyone had the correct conditions to train their quirks-- you included, seeing as every time you tried to train you regenerative quirk you were practically grounded to the school. IT wasn’t like you didn’t understand why he was praised, there was more to it than simply training. But you still found yourself saying: “Congratulations do you want a cookie?”
Midoriya smiles as he pulls you into a tight hug. “Yes, I do Cookie.”
Your heart leapt a bit as he did this, but deciding to be a bit of a menace he bites your cheek. Pushing him away you huff. “That’s not sanitary I’m covered in sweat.”
Suddenly he was pushed off you. “For fucks sake keep your damn hands to yourself.” Bakugo groans as he nudges you a bit too.
Which was a bit of an alarm for you since he was not one to pull his punches with any of them. You grab his arm watching as he seemed to relax a bit. “How long have you been avoiding me Blasty?”
“None of your damn business mind reader.”
“Awe come on, Kacchan, Cookie is as sweet on you as they are on me,” Midoriya pouts a bit as he pushes against Bakugo’s still extended arm.
Bakugo rolls his eyes a bit as he doesn’t budge. “I don’t want any part of your sappy relationship.”
“Are you sure? Puppy would probably be much more excited if you were a part of it,” you tease as you wait for your quirk to stop patching him up.
Kaminari
Bouncing from one foot to the other you hated waiting for Power-loader to allow you into the lab, it wasn’t like you were banned from it you simply were given time limits. With your quirks it was kind of like a cooldown because who knew how dazed you’d be if you spent the entire day using your flame breath. Once allowed inside you zip from one space to another quickly grabbing your things and returning to your earlier tasks. Kaminari, who needed you to recalibrate his disk shooters.
“You look like a little bumblebee buzzing about.” He chuckles.
Pausing in your tracks you look directly at him. “Thank you for the compliment. Now put your disk shooters on my table space so I can start fixing them.”
“Of course, bumblebee,” He beams before getting hit with something.
“No. No.” You frown covering your face, because now your heart was in your ears. Great you’ll have to face the consequences of this later because this idiot decided to say something like that. Making fall a little bit more in love with him.
Hearing a sharp. “L/N!” before trying to clean up the mess you’d just made.
Kirishima
Since you had a harder time with Japanese than you’d like to admit so early on in your relationship you called your friend Kirishima “Edgy” because for some reason his name just made you think that was the right way to say his name on top if his quirk.
“Eiji, where are my extra weights?” It wasn’t uncommon for him to be in your apartment at any moment simply because he enjoyed being in your company.
He looks around. “Uh, I dunno Babe do you think you forgot them?”
“No, I haven’t even used them yet.” You mumble trying to think.
“Baby.”
As you pace around the mini gym you had in your apartment you look for the missing weights.
“Love.”
Not finding them in the closet you cross your arms.
“The light of my life.”
Glaring at the ground you try to wrack your brain for where you could have placed them coming up blank when your face is picked up and squished in a hand that was rather large.
“Rosebud.”
Blinking you look at Eijiro confused as you felt embarrassed for ignoring him this whole time before a sharp smile is in your face.
“You left them by the door rosebud.” he chuckles a bit before planting a kiss on your nose and pulling away.
“You’re the worst you know that right?”
He simply laughs before pulling you into a hug and preparing your face with kisses.
Shoji
Dating was difficult with your quirk. Eyes constantly glued to the ground and never looking at another if you can help yourself. So, when your current partner started referring to you by a pet name you couldn’t help but look up at him. Towering over you small frame as he crossed his arms.
“Stardust when was the last time you took a break?” Mezo wasn’t mad and you knew that, but your head hung down a little bit.
“I can’t remember,” was all you could muster before he plucked you up from your computer chair like he normally would.
Pouting a little bit, it was hard for you to even fathom why he called you this, even as you were being placed on the couch.
As if reading your mind Mezo chuckles as he pulls a blanket from the nearby chair. “I call you stardust because of the performance from school.”
“Huh?”
“Because the first time you really looked up your eyes sparkled like stars.”
You pull the blanket over your head not even wanting to look at him. “Mezo that’s not fair.”
Todoroki
“Sho?” you felt like every time you visited this man, you’d lose him somewhere in the maze that was his childhood home. Not that there were any happy memories left from the large place, but you found that for his other family members sakes he returned.
You were surprised by how accommodating the entire building was, though you had to gently remind yourself that not everyone was the same height as Enji. Not finding the dual quirk user anywhere near where you’d been, you began hunting for him. Because the moment you left without telling him first you could only imagine the problems that would cause and the abuse of money that would start.
As you looked around for your boyfriend you wondered about something for a while now, Shoto had never referred to you by your given name, he’d often tap you or stood behind you-- often giving you a near heart attack when you’d turn and almost smack him with your wing.
“Sho, where are you?” you call out a bit as you kept looking around.
Fuyumi waves as she notices you in the hall. “Oh, y/n I was wondering where were, have you seen Shoto?”
Shaking your head, you sigh. “I was just looking for him so I can let him know I was gonna head home.”
“Huh.” his sister crosses her arms trying to pinpoint where in the house her youngest brother would be.
Before you realize you felt the temperature change behind you seeing your breath a bit. “Oh there you are Sho.”
He pulls you into a hug and from how tight his hands were against you there much be something wrong.
“Hey? Do you need me to stay the night?” you ask as you try to hug him back.
He nods against your shoulder, and his hold gets tighter.
Fuyumi waves a bit. “I’ll make you some extra dinner let me know if anything changes.”
Nodding a bit you follow Shoto as he pulls you along his grip on your hand as if the moment he let go you’d disappear, but he wasn’t dragging you. Once you got to his room you sit down and hold your arms open for him to cuddle into you. Your wings going up to kind of create a slight separation between the two of you and the rest of the world.
“My love you’ll never leave me right?” he whispers.
You look down at him and hug him tightly. “Did you have a bad dream?”
He nods.
“Of course as long as you want me next to you I will never leave,” you state.
“Thank you my love.” He states.
Chuckling a bit you rub his back to sooth him a little bit. “Is that your name for me now?”
“Yes because you are my love.”

The kitchen is bustling with activity.
At the stove, in a shallow pot of oil, Rei tends to the pumpkin she’s carefully frying to a crisp, golden shell. Beside her at the sink Fuyumi is meticulously cleaning vegetables that she’ll pass off to her youngest brother standing at the counter, trying his hardest to work out how to use the peeler in his hands. You’re on the other side of the kitchen, having just set the rice cooker to on, watching the excitement unfold.
“Natsuo, stop eating the ingredients!” Fuyumi chastises the young man peeking over her shoulder, snagging one of the beansprouts from the draining board and popping it surreptitiously into his mouth.
“But I’m hungry,” he complains as he chews the measly little sprout he’d managed to snag, pouting as his older sister shoos him away.
“Here,” Rei says gently, a little smile on her face as she plucks a bit of tempura off the tray of pieces she’d already prepared and set aside to rest, holding it out to her middle child with her chopsticks. Natsuo perks up noticeably, leaning down to catch the little golden-brown fried shrimp in his mouth. He looks pleased as he chews away at it, skirting across the kitchen towards you while his sister grumbles about how he’s being spoiled.
There’s music coming from the television in the next room as a popular National New Year's Eve program airs live, though the family is not there to watch it. There’s an old song that’s playing, one you remember your mother singing in your childhood, and at the stove Rei starts to hum along as she plucks the perfectly cooked slices of pumpkin from the oil and moves them to the tray with the rest of her previously prepared delicacies.
It’s comfortable. Warm. Familiar in the most fundamental way.
You approach Shoto at the counter.
“You’re going to slice your fingers off,” you remark, watching as he butchers the carrot in his hand—half-peeled but knobbly from his inconsistent, jagged strokes with the vegetable peeler. “Be careful.”
He peeks at you from the corner of his eye, his lips pursed.
“Why does it look so easy when you do it?” he complains quietly.
“Because it is easy,” you reply, laughing lightly, “you’re just really bad at it.”
You watch as Shoto’s mouth flattens into an unimpressed little line, and you lean your weight against his side.
“Here, hold it this way,” you instruct him, adjusting his grip on the implement and the poor misshapen vegetable. This time when the man beside you drags the blade across the skin, it comes off in one long, graceful ribbon.
Shoto looks at you with wide, excited eyes, his expression brightening. You press a brief, inconspicuous kiss to the very edge of his mouth when you’re sure no one is looking, and pink blossoms high across his cheeks in response.
“Natsuo, come help Sho with this or we’ll be here until Obon,” you singsong in the direction of the older of the two brothers as you step away from your partner, and Fuyumi laughs as she crosses the kitchen to bring more vegetables to add to Shoto’s already impressive pile. The white-haired boy shuffles over when you call him, picking up the second vegetable peeler and setting to work.
As the three Todoroki siblings bicker over the most efficient way to tackle the workload, you spot something from the corner of your eye—a figure in the periphery of your vision, ghosting past the doorway to the kitchen out of sight.
You perk up.
You hasten in the direction the figure had moved, towards the front door of Rei’s home when you hear it gently close. It’s cold outside and you didn’t have time to grab your coat, but it doesn’t stop you as you jog along the walkway at the front of the house.
“Touya!” you call out the the retreating figure who seems to be fleeing more briskly than usual. “Touya, wait!”
Finally the eldest Todoroki son stops, seemingly resigned to his apprehension, and you watch as he stands with his back to you, his shoulders tense. You jog along the wooden walkway that lines the front of the house to catch up to him.
“Where are you going?” you ask, a little out of breath from the pace of your pursuit.
Touya turns towards you, his hands stuffed into the pockets of the jacket he has pulled on over a dark hoodie.
“I’ve got plans.”
“But it’s New Years,” you say sadly.
“Not midnight yet,” he reminds you, though not unkindly.
“Will you at least stay for dinner? We should be eating soon,” you say, fiddling the the handles of the little bag you hold in your hands.
“Is there even anything left between Natsuo’s snacking and Shoto’s hack job with that peeler?” he asks with a brow quirked wryly.
You laugh a little, because he has a point. You also realize he must have been peeking into the kitchen as the rest of the family worked to prepare the evening's meal.
“There’s still plenty,” you assure him.
It’s quiet for a moment, the still winter night around you a sharp contrast to the bustling atmosphere of the warm kitchen inside.
“Will you at least be back to come to the shrine with us tomorrow morning?” you finally ask again, a little softer than before but still hopeful.
Touya breathes out a long, low breath, and it leaves his mouth in a wispy cloud of vapour.
“Yeah, I should be back by then.”
You doubt it.
“You should get inside,” he remarks next, his tone a little irritated but in a way of concern, not vexation. “You’re not dressed properly.”
He’s right. You’re in your slippers and without a coat, and it’s cold enough that at any moment you’re sure you’ll see snow start to fall. But you’d followed him on a mission, determined not to let the eldest Todoroki slip away (like he's so good at) without at least doing this.
You hold the little bag in your hands out towards him, and Touya’s brows shoot up in surprise.
“What’s that?”
“It’s nothing big,” you rush to explain. “I just got you a little gift. For the holidays, you know.”
“I thought we all agreed we weren’t buying presents,” Touya looks alarmed, his mouth turned down at the corner in a way that makes the silvery lines of his long-healed scars pull.
“I didn’t buy it, technically—” you toe at the ground beneath your slipper-clad feet, shivering a little as a rush of cold wind bristles past. Your teeth begin to chatter lightly. “—I made it.”
Touya looks unhappy regardless of your explanation, but he watches the way you shiver and shake in the cold and you suspect that his concern for your insufficient attire is what makes him relent and stick his hand into the gift bag—if for no other reason to appease you and get you back inside.
From the depths of the simple little paper gift bag, Touya pulls out a long, soft, hand-knitted scarf. It's a plain grey colour you hoped was neutral and inoffensive enough not to put him off wearing it, and that you thought would compliment his colouring.
His turquoise eyes flicker from the length of knit in his hands, up to your own that are watching him eagerly for his reaction.
“It’s a scarf!” you say, wringing your fingers nervously now that you don’t have the gift bag to fiddle with to distract yourself.
“I see that.”
You clear your throat a little. “You mentioned that you don’t really like the cold, and that the scars around your neck are sensitive to it, and I just thought… w-well I already had the yarn and stuff… so I just… wanted to make it for you?” your tone climbs on the final word, like it’s a question rather than a statement of fact.
Touya’s thumbs brush against the softness of the scarf, his eyes following the delicate lines of stitches your hands had carefully purled together to make it.
He swallows.
“Thank you.”
Your stomach flutters, a great, almighty fwooosh of relief.
“Do you like it?” you ask him excitedly.
“Yeah,” he replies, grunting a bit to clear his throat before tacking on a half-mumbled “’s nice.”
A rosiness has bloomed across Touya’s cheeks when he finally glances at you again. A little shy. A little embarrassed. Though you can’t begin to imagine why.
You smile brightly, the expression stretching so wide it makes your frostbitten cheeks ache.
“I’m glad!”
Touya swallows, looking away out across the dark yard of his mother’s home.
“Alright, now get inside before you catch something. Shoto'll kick my ass if I get you sick.”
You nod, skittering off towards the front door again, eager to escape the chill. You pause just before you step inside, and turn back to see Touya standing at the end of the walkway, still holding the scarf, watching you go.
“Happy New Year, Touya!” you call back to him with one last smile and a wave.
He doesn’t quite smile back, but he rarely does that anyway. One night when you and Shoto has been laying in your bed at home, the youngest Todoroki boy had said ‘Touya’s never had much to smile about’ about his brother’s somewhat solemn countenance.
And you know he’s right.
You know Todoroki Touya has lived a hard life. Has found himself down roads most aren’t strong enough to brave, and somehow made it home again.
But there’s an expression on his face now, though it’s a bit difficult to make out in the dim light. Not quite a smile, but the ghost of one. Closer to happiness than you’ve ever seen him, even if it is still a little haunted.
He lifts his hand in parting, and you step back inside to the warmth of Rei’s home. You hear the television still blaring from the living room. You hear your boyfriend and his siblings fighting over the vegetables. The warm air begins to dissipate the chill that had clung to you outside.
You close the door and at the other end of the walkway out of sight, Touya’s shoulder’s slump like a marionette whose strings have finally snapped.
He stares at the scarf in his scarred hands with an ache kindling in his chest. He loops it slowly around his neck and turns to continue off into the cold night, a little bit warmer than before.

Note
Ask Game: Fuyumi, Natsuo and Shouto are the children of the stable happy marriage of Rei and Masaru Bakugo. Touya and Katsuki are the children of Enji and Mitsuki Todoroki.
Well this just feels targeted...
1- the night before his meeting with the Himura family, Enji has a hero event with a few support designers. One of them spends fifteen minutes telling him why his is stupid. (And honestly, Mitsuki could have gone on longer about why he shouldn't be wasting energy on his quirk to set himself on fire decoratively - I mean sure if he wants do that with his face it's his right and his face, whatever, but the flaming shoulder pads? When his biggest problem is overheating? Why add to the problem when a good costume is supposed to help, not hinder him. And don't give her the excuse about being strong or whatever, she won't have her work insulted just because it keeps pros at top shape instead of making their quirk the focal point when it should be how they use it: and he needs to use his more intelligently.) He talks with her for hours afterwards, and tells the Himuras he won't be there to meet with them tomorrow.
2- when Rei suddenly isn't needed and she has a free day, she tends the gardens and listens to her parents and aunts discuss why their big hero offer wasn't interested anymore- it can't have been the girl's fault when he didn't even give her a chance, and her quirk is as strong as ever. Maybe they need to find another match, but they're desperate, and the other options are... worse, not with the reward this catch was supposed to have. Rei is sent to a cousin's place for a week while they search for another match. She doesn't arrive, taking the sudden cancellation for a sign and going to her old teenage sweetheart instead.
3- when Mitsuki gets pregnant with Touya, she informs Enji they're getting married. He had plans for a whole big thing and she said "yeah in a year so we can actually plan it and design a dress I won't look like I shoved a watermelon in, in the meantime we're changing our family registration today let's go." Rei and Masaru didn't get married quite as quickly, but they also played a more medium wedding. Rei didn't invite anyone from her family, so Masaru invited a lot of his. They reunite with Inko, who was in Masaru's highschool class at the wedding.
4- Fuyumi got her mother's ice, Natsuo his father's oxidizing sweat, and Shoto got a perfect mix- where Fuyumi can generate ice from anywhere on her body, he can only do so from his hands. However, his ice is more... Explosive, especially when cracked. The only safe way to really remove it is to very slowly melt it, or to let him do so. Meanwhile Touya's sweat makes him fireproof, and Katsuki's body in general is fireproof where his sweat is extremely flammable.
5- Mitsuki's reaction to Enji's whole mini eugenics experiment was "well that's stupid and not how kids work. They're only going to be strong if THEY want to be, not if it's about YOU. Just because you've got a weird thing for All Might doesn't mean they will, I mean statistically he'll have retired by the time the graduate." Which is like. Definitely better than being on board with it, but also missing large parts of why it's really bad, and she got her own brand of not great parenting that is going to clash with Enji's and make some kids who are messed up in new and exciting ways from canon. Like yeah inferiority/superiority complexes in colors shrimp can see, but also like. I don't know if Katsuki will have ever heard the words "I'm" and "sorry" in that order before the age of 11.
Meanwhile Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto will grow up in a home that's so conflict avoidant that "I'm sorry" will be in the top twenty most frequently spoken phrases each week.

.ೃ࿐ MHA MEN AS GIRL DADS
contents: bakugo + midoriya + todoroki + hawks + aizawa. fem!reader. bakugo's his usual snarky self. mentions of sheltering in midoriya's part. vague mentions of an injury in aizawa's part. consider this my return to the mha fandom.. ish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
★ ━ KATSUKI BAKUGO
katsuki teaches his daughter to handle the stupid, ignorant world she lives in.
he affectionately refers to her as his tough little girl, and it's true—she inherited her dad's sass and thick exterior.
in school, she's that girl who argues with the teacher over dumb rules, and when katsuki and you get called in for her misbehavior, your husband just laughs and ruffles his daughter's hair.
yeah, she's a handful, but at least you and katsuki know that your daughter can stick up for herself!
that being said, both of you are still very willing to step in when it's necessary.
one time, your daughter came home, sniffling over something a "dumbass shrimp" (in katsuki's words) said to her.
needless to say, the boy who made your daughter cry was the one who went home bawling after katsuki had a friendly chat with him :)
your daughter's tough enough to fight for herself, but in the worst case scenario, she also has two parents to back her up!!
★ ━ IZUKU MIDORIYA
he treats his daughter like the delicate little girl she is!
having seen the harsh, unforgiving world through his own eyes, izuku doesn't want the universe to treat his daughter as badly as it treated him :(
so he protects her at all times.
that means covering her eyes when bad things come on the news and sometimes—sometimes—telling small, white lies about the things he's done and the people he's fought against.
after all, he wouldn't want to burden his little girl with the truth of her world this soon.
she's too young to deal with all of this, and that's the one thing izuku will always stand by.
sometimes you tell him that he's sheltering her too much, but there's no convincing him. at all.
he's a very sweet, understanding dad, but he wants his daughter to have a happy childhood, free from the stress of the hero world.
★ ━ SHOTO TODOROKI
he's a very good dad by any standards—other parents/teachers always comment that your daughter was raised very well.
shoto's always there to listen when your daughter has a bad day, and he's always there to congratulate her when she has a good day!
sure, he's busy a great deal of the time, but that never really made him seem absent.
when shoto's with you two, his attention is entirely fixed on his girls.
your daughter is in love with her father's cooking—one time, she came home talking about something tasty she tried on a field trip, and shoto spent two hours learning how to make it for her!!
shoto's the perfect dad, no matter what way you look at it.
instead of repeating his father's mistakes, he learned from them and used that example to make himself better.
needless to say, he's also a perfect husband—most of the time.
the stress of being a pro-hero rubs off on him sometimes, and when that happens, it's up to you to ease him up.
a massage and a bowl of miso soup usually does the trick—especially if it's his adorable daughter who hands him the bowl.
★ ━ KEIGO TAKAMI
keigo's a super fun dad!!
he gives his daughter the best childhood she could possibly ask for—the perfect mix of thrill and responsibility.
some nights when his workload's light, he takes you and your daughter out on a quick flight up to the tallest building in the city.
it's become something of a family tradition—keigo scoops up his girls in his arms and takes them to the rooftops, where you spend the next couple hours picnic-ing and watching the sun fall below the horizon.
just like everyone else, he's very busy, but goes out of his way to make time for you two!
the amount of shifts he's ditched or given away to come home early is... less than ideal for his employer.
keigo loves telling his daughter about his job—unlike midoriya, keigo tells his daughter everything from a young age.
obviously, he sugarcoats it a lot.
he makes it sound like it's a game of superheroes and villains, and that her dad's the knight in shining armor.
and to her, keigo really is her knight.
★ ━ SHOTA AIZAWA
he raises his daughter to not take any shit from others.
yeah, shota himself doesn't have any desire to deal with any more bullshit than necessary, so he passes down that same trait to his daughter.
most people are relatively skeptical as to how good of a dad shota could possibly be, given his reputation, but he really is an amazing dad.
shota's a very good listener, and even better at giving advice.
which makes the father-daughter chats both easy and entertaining!!
your daughter always goes to shota about any drama or rumors she hears about, and shota gives genuine advice that any girl would listen to.
shota's half-asleep for a pretty big fraction of his life, but he's wide awake wherever you or his daughter's concerned.
when your daughter trips and scrapes her knee for the first time, shota's there instantly, holding both her little hands in his own and comforting her while you bandage her knee.
he distracts her by pointing out the cat prowling along the side of the street, and it works like a charm!
once your daughter's tears have stopped and a small smile's returned to her face, shota takes you and her out for ice cream :)

Rei smiled as she wrapped her arms around her son. It felt nice to hold him in her arms again. “I missed you.” She said softly. She pulled back, smile on her face. “So how’s school?
"I missed you too mom"
Shoto nestled against his mother, inhaling the aroma of her hair, trying to remember it as much as possible. He wanted to fill a ten-year gap in their relationship.
"Everything is fine. There should be an annual test soon, but I think there will not be anything complicated. "

Running on Instinct
Pairing: Merman!Shoto Todoroki x Male!MarineBiologist!Reader
Word Count: 5500
Summary: Quirkless AU for Mermay 2022. Y/n works endlessly to improve the living situation of a small group of merfolk being kept in poor conditions at a rehabilitation facility. One playful merman in particular pulls more of Y/n’s attention than the others. When an orphaned merpup comes into the rehabilitation facility, will Shoto be willing to help the frantic Y/n?
Inspired by this artwork by @peterokii
Warnings: Merfolk kept in bad conditions, Reader almost drowned on accident, baby in critical need
A/N: In a surprise addition to Mermay, I come in with less than 24 hours left in May. This is the longest single chapter story I’ve posted. I was truly inspired by Pete’s artwork and how he drew Shoto’s facial expressions. Just as a warning, I proof read the first half of this but not the second half. I hope y’all like it!
Tumblr media
Y/n squat near the edge of the deep tank, hand between his legs for support, looking for what could be in the depths. The occasional glimpse of a tattered tail caught the light. After a few moments, just below the water’s surface, a pair of eyes looked up towards Y/n, one grey and one electric blue. Half red and half white hair fell flat to the sides of the mermans face as he emerged from the water, looking at Y/n curiously. Y/n looked behind the mermaid and noticed how much the normally long fins of the Butterfly Koi merman were short and jagged.
“You’re new,” the merman whispers, nose now inches from Y/n’s.
“I am,” Y/n smiles, reaching into his messenger bag and offering the small plastic container of cooked shrimp he had brought.
“Hey! Watch out!” Someone calls from behind Y/n.
The loud voice of the research manager, Warden spooks the mermaid, causing him to quickly grab the container of shrimp, turn tail and disappear back under the water. Looking over his shoulder, Y/n gives Warden a confused look.
“Watch out for what? We were doing introductions.” Y/n says casually, standing up and wiping off the water that had been splashed onto his arms by the merman.
“I’ve nearly lost two interns to that seamonster pulling them under,” Warden stood tall, arms crossed.
Y/n had quickly learned what kind of person Warden was. Multiple anonymous complaints was filed for this rehabilitation center for how they were treating their resuces. Things like barely feeding them, not maintaining enclosures, and profiting off of the merfolk instead of actual rehibiltaion and releasing those who can be. All things that went against the wildlife code of ethics. Which is why Y/n, one of the leading merfolk experts was sent in to asses the situation. Warden had already attempted to block Y/n from looking at certain rooms of the facility. Being interrupted when he was finally meeting one of the merfolk here felt like the last straw.
“Do you have incident reports from those two interns?” Y/n asked, body language matching Wardens.
“I probably do, in my office,” Warden turned, heading towards the front of the facility.
Probably? This man felt less like a rehabilitation specialist and more of a villain with every passing second. Digging into his bag, Y/n pulled out his work binder. Flipping between paper folders, he stops on one labeled Emergency Power Transfer Paperwork. Tapping on the back of the binder, Y/n turns back towards the tank, reading what information he’d need to get from Warden, hopefully without him realizing what he was doing. Y/n began filling out some of the paperwork as he waited. A quiet stuttering voice pulled Y/n’s attention to the water in front of him.
“Marine Poli-cy Speec- Speci…” The merman from before was squinting at the binder in Y/n’s hands trying to sound out the words on the front of it.
“Marine Policy Specialist. You can read?” Y/n asked, setting down the binder and pen as he squatted down to talk to the mermaid.
“No. Yes. A little.” The merman lit up a bit, his hands found the edge of the tank, pulling himself to mid chest out of the water so they were eye level.
“Nice, who taught you?” Y/n questioned.
“My old keeper. She stopped showing up on day when I was young,” the merman seemed to deflate at the memory.
“How long have you been here?” Y/n shifted so he was sitting with his legs crossed.
“My whole life.” He smiled at Y/n, excited to have someone to talk to.
Y/n paused. He had been born and raised here? How long has this mistreatment been going on? This merman couldn’t be much older than him, but unlicensed merfolk breeding had been outlawed since before either of them were born and this facility hadn’t reported rescuing any pregnant mermaids in all its time in operation.
“Are you in this tank alone?” Y/n’s head quirked to the side, trying to find anyone else in the large tank.
The merman sunk back into the water so only the top half of his face was showing, hair pooling around him. He shook head from side to side. Y/n’s eyes go wide. He knew Butterfly Koi merfolk lived in groups, or glints. How long had this merman been alone? That would explain the interns being dragged into the water. If this facility wasn’t going to re-release these merfolk back into the ocean, the least they could do was bring in enough for a small pod.
“I’m sorry our introduction was interrupted earlier. My name is Y/n. What’s yours?” Y/n reached his right hand out, palm facing the ceiling.
“Shoto,” he whispered, reaching out to lay his hand atop of Y/n.
The chill of merfolk was never something Y/n had become accustomed to. The hair on his arms raised.
“What did I say about that creature?” Warden boomed, running up and yanking Y/n back by the collar.
Y/n tore himself from Warden’s grip, turning back to where Shoto had been. A small puddle where Shoto had lifted his hand out of the tank was all that remained. Turning back to Warden, Y/n’s face was red and fuming.
“In accordance with the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association,” Y/n grabs and flips through his binder again, pulling out the folder he was looking at moments ago and shoving it into Warden’s arms, “I hereby take control of this facility as we restructure it. And don’t ever grab somebody like that, or you’re no better than what you think that merman is.”
Warden’s eyes go wide as he flips through the partially filled out forms, sputtering to find words.
“If you think this is a mistake, you are welcome to contact the board and have a second person come out and investigate, but I doubt they’ll disagree with my conclusion. Until then, I must request you hand over your keys,” Y/n aggressively adjusted his ruffled shirt as he spoke.
The next couple of hours were occupied by filling out paper work and closing the aquarium side of the facility until further notice. Y/n couldn’t ignore the smug smiles on the faces of some of the volunteers as Warden left in his car without saying a single goodbye.
Y/n reached into his lab coat pocket for his pen when he realized he had left it tank side in the flurry of commandeering the facility. He let out a soft sigh and weaved his way back through the facility and up the tank ladder to where he was earlier. At the edge of the tank stood the empty plastic container and his pen placed neatly next to it. Approaching them, he noticed the poorly scribbled word ‘thank’ on top in blue ink that smudged with the droplets of water on top. Y/n smiled, picking up the items and storing them in his bag. The shrimp was supposed to be a part his lunch, but he could always get something on the way home.
The next day, Y/n woke up at 3 am in an attempt to beat the restaurant owners to the local fish market. He had received a list of all the different merfolk being kept at the facility and wanted to make sure he bought all the preferred foods for each. But when his white van pulled into the fisherman dock, it was already bustling. Y/n jumps out of the van, grabbing his messenger bag as he does. Entering the large warehouse, the familiar smell of fish and the shouting voices of those around him assault’s Y/n’s sense.
“Y/n! Long time since we’ve seen you down here!” Eijiro, a fisherman who had let Y/n sail with him while he was in school, barked out across the aisle.
Y/n smiled, shifting between people to stand in front of Eijiro’s stand.
“I’m working at a new facility that desperately needs help. Think you can help me with what I need?” Y/n help out the shopping list he had thrown together.
Eijiro looked at the list in his hands, inspecting it and nodding every so often. Looking up, he handed the list back to Y/n.
“I can give you most of this stuff myself for free and what I can’t, I can get you a discount from the others.” Eijiro shouts.
“I can pay for it, Eiji! I don’t want to take advantage of your kindness” Y/n smiles.
“Absolutely not! You’re doing good work. Couldn’t take advantage if you tried.” Eijiro says over his shoulder, already packing what he could for Y/n.
“Fine, but I’m going to need this stuff consistently. This is the only time I’ll take it for free!” Y/n shouts back.
Eijiro just waves his hand aimlessly over his shoulder as he continues to pack fish. About two hours later, Y/n’s van is packed with crates of fish, crusteations, and even some fresh produce. Eijiro closed the back barn doors, leaning on it and looking down at Y/n.
“So, how bad is it?” Eijiro asks casually.
Y/n lets out a long sigh, “pretty bad. They aren’t even keeping the grouping merfolk together. There’s a butterfly koi merman who has never met another merfolk.
Eijiro let out a long low whistle before he spoke, “Didn’t you specialize in butterfly koi? Whatever. I just don’t understand some people. Merfolk are so important to our oceans, and they’ve got just as many emotions as we do. The operators of that place are lucky I wasn’t there, or else I would hav-”
“Well, we can’t all be big and buff like you, Eiji,” Y/n chuckles lightly, rubbing his eyes. “I need to go and get started on food prep. I’ll see you around.”
“Don’t over work yourself, Y/n,” Eijiro lightly shoved Y/n’s shoulder before disappearing back into the fish market.
The facilities small kitchen was packed with food and the four volunteers who agreed to show up at 5:30 am to start preparing the food with Y/n. He showed them each a few different food preps for the merfolk they were each assigned before getting to work on his own designated meals.
“Uh, Mr. Y/l/n? I know for a fact Momo, the Black Moor mermaid hates blood worms,” the volunteer Y/n had learned was named Uraraka mentions, walking up with the container of blood worms he had put in the Black Moor’s food box.
Y/n looked up from the large pan of shrimp he was cooking, smiling at her, “oh, well then don’t include those.”
“Really? But you bought them. Warden would have told us not to waste the money and feed them to her anyways.” Uraraka looked relieved at Y/n’s words.
“If a merfolk doesn’t like something, we won’t feed it to them. What if someone forced you to eat meatloaf, but you hated it?” Y/n turned to the other volunteers as he spoke, “if there is anything in the boxes that you know the merfolk won’t like, don’t force it. And if you could write a list of each merfolks likes and dislikes, I’ll be sure to adjust what I buy. And I want to add enrichment to their tanks. Mirrors, foliage, hideaways. Anything you can think of that we can get on the short term before we can really renovate the tanks would be great.”
They all nodded back to him, large smiles on their faces. Some took a few items out of their boxes or switched items with each other. It was 8 am before they were all ready to start delivering breakfast to them all. Y/n and Uraraka walked down one of the hallways together, each with a cart full of prepared food.
“When was the last time they had food prepared like this?” Y/n asked, side eyeing the volunteer.
Uraraka shrugged her shoulders, “I couldn’t tell you. Not since before I started volunteering here about 7 months ago.”
They separated at the fork. Y/n saved the Butterfly koi merman for last. The other Y/n delivered breakfast to didn’t look much better than him, some obviously ill. Y/n would have to get a merfolk doctor as soon as he could to check all of them. Y/n struggled up the last tank ladder with the tub of food. Getting to the top, he set down the tub, kneeling down at the edge of the water.
Y/n reached out, tapping the surface of the water a few times before sitting back with his legs crossed. Across the tank, similar red and white hair surfaced looking towards the water was disturbed. His eyes squint before landing on the man who had visited yesterday. Sinking back under the water, he quickly swam his way over. Reemerging from the water up to his shoulders, he could smell the food in the tub.
“Did you bring more of those little pink things?” He quizzed, craning his neck to get a look into the tub.
“Shrimp? Yes, I did. You’ve never had shrimp before that, have you?” Y/n smiled softly.
Shoto just shook his head lightly, reaching out for the tub. Y/n caught it before he could drag it into the water. Shoto looked back to Y/n confused.
“I have one question,” Y/n said quickly.
“More shrimp,” he quickly said.
When Shoto didn’t respond, Y/n continued, “is there anything you want? I can have it brought in.”
Y/n had asked all of the merfolk he had fed this, and he planned on asking the rest when he was finally able to make introductions with all of them. But this some how felt more important. This merman has never experienced what to ocean had to offer. Would he even have anything to wish for?
Y/ chuckled softly, “You’ll get plenty of shrimp. I meant something for your tank.”
Shoto looked into the tub with a thoughtful gaze before patting the edge and whispering, “More things with tops. I liked opening the thing you gave me yesterday.”
Y/n smiled at him, letting go of the tub. Shoto quickly yanked it, turning it over in the water as he sank it to the bottom to eat. Y/n sighed. Bucket with lids? All this merman could think of was something he had been introduced to yesterday? Y/n shook his head as he got up to go ask the rest of the merfolk things they wanted. He left confident the volunteers there would be able to handle dinner prep.
Y/n had noticed how dirty the merfolk enclosures were when touring the aquarium side of the facility later that week. He didn’t want to put anything into their tanks without some sort of basic cleaning being down. He started with partial water changes on all the tanks, stopping there for any merfolk who refused to let him into the tanks. Y/n had already cleaned most of what he could before getting to Shoto’s tank a second time that day.
Y/n climbed up the ladder with his scuba gear. The tub from breakfast was sitting neatly on the edge of the tank platform. Grabbing it, Y/n turned back towards the ladder, taking a step back towards the ladder to drop the tub down to the bottom. Before he could take another step, an ice cold hand wrapped tight around the ankle of his wetsuit. Look behind him, Shoto reached far out of his tank up to his waist, chest almost flush with the platform. He looked at Y/n’s wetsuit boots, avoiding eye contact.
“I’m just putting the tub where one of the volunteers can grab it. I’ll come right back,” Y/n said casually.
Shoto released Y/n’s ankle and watch as the bent over and dropped the tub to somewhere he couldn’t see. Turning around, Y/n walked back towards him, a bright smile on his face.
“I saw you across the way in the black mermaid tank. Are you going to get in mine?” Shoto’s face wasn’t readable to Y/n.
Y/n paused halfway, looking at him worried, “only if you want me to. I won’t do anything you don’t want me t--”
“Yes!” Shoto almost shouted, face lighting up.
“Okay,” Y/n’s smile back on his face, “but I can’t just hang out. I’m going to do some cleaning. And then,” Y/n pointed behind him to a large bag full of something Shoto couldn’t see, “I’ve got a surprise for you.”
Y/n geared up to jump into the 50 degrees Fahrenheit water. As he pulled the air mask over his face, Shoto looked at him confused.
“Why are you putting so much stuff just to swim?” He asked, tapping his hands in the puddle of water he had created on the platform where he waited.
“Because,” Y/n said, pulling the mask away from his face slightly so he wouldn't be muffled, “I can’t breath underwater like you can.”
This pulled an even more confused look from Shoto and suddenly his pulling down of those interns made even more sense. They were probably nice to him and he hadn't known they couldn’t breathe under the water. Y/n gave him a sad smile before pulling the clear full face mask back over his face.
Y/n sat at the edge of the platform, feet dipping into the water. he went to push off the edge of the platform when two hands grabbed his waist and yanked him into the water. The sudden all-over cold shocked Y/n for a second despite the thick wetsuit he wore but the excited look of the merman pulling him deeper into the water quickly distracted him. Shoto watched as Y/n’s scared look turned into a bright smile and how his hair started to float around his head exactly how Shoto had imagined it would.
Y/n tread water where Shoto had let go of him deep in the tank. Shoto swam back up to the top, grabbing both the bucket of cleaning brushes Y/n had brought and the sack of mystery Y/n had mentioned earlier. He let the sack float to the bottom of the tank as he carried the other box back to where Y/n swam.
“Here you go,” Shoto’s voice was clear as day to Y/n as he held the bucket between them.
Y/n started to clean the sides of the tank after years of algae buildup. It was obvious whoever the divers were before were instructed to only clean the main viewing window which was relatively spotless. After about ten minutes of Shoto carefully watching Y/n clean the sides of his cage, he was over, picking up a matching brush for the box and scrubbing next to him.
“Like this?” Shoto asks.
Slowly turning his head towards the Merman, Y/n chuckles, watching Shoto enthusiastically cleaning the side of his own tank. Y/n nods, hair following slowly behind. His hair reminded Shoto of the big fake seaweed plants that were in his home when he was young with how it moved. With the extra help, Y/n was able to scrub clean the sides as best he could. He packed up the cleaning box, having to try and convince Shoto to give back the brush he had been using but eventually gave up.
Y/n swam back up to the surface, hoisting the box up onto the platform. He took off his breathing mask and positioned his arms to hoist himself up onto the platform when a hand grabbed his ankle pulling him back under the water. Taking whatever breath he could before being submerged.
Shoto pulled them halfway down before looking up at Y/n. His excited face suddenly filled with panic when he noticed Y/n’s breathing mask floating a couple of feet above his head. He reached up trying to put it over Y/n’s face. Y/n shook his head back and forth frantically, trying to swim back to the surface. Shoto’s hands scooped under Y/n’s arms, swimming as fast as he could back to the surface. As they broke the surface, Y/n gasped for air.
“You could have killed me,” Y/n heaved between breaths.
Looking at Shoto, Y/n could see the fear in his eyes before he disappeared deep into his tank. Y/n caught their breath as they swam back to the platform, pulling himself up without interruption. His legs and flippers were still in the water, expecting Shoto to resurface eventually. After a few moments with no return of the merman, Y/n left Shoto’s area. The rest of the day until dinner would be filling out paperwork and checks for the medical care the different merfolk needed.
“Knock, knock,” Eijiro’s bright smile filled Y/n’s office a few hours later.
“Hey, Eiji. Ready for that tour?” Y/n asked, arms crossing and leaning forward onto his desk.
Y/n promised to give Eijiro and his crew a tour of the facility during dinner so he wouldn’t actually be helping with the delivery of food. Most of them had never seen merfolk up close and Eijiro next to begged Yn to let his crew see them. Y/n had reluctantly agreed of course. It was next to impossible to say no to Eijiro Kirishima when he gave those puppy dog eyes.
Y/n showed them first where they prepped the food and how the diets of different merfolk differed depending on where in the ocean they were found. Then he led them down the different hallways aquarium side. The boat crew was mesmerized by the merfolk who swam up to the glass once they saw Y/n had been walking with them. Y/n introduced the different merfolk with their names and where they were normally found in the oceans.
Walking up to Momo’s tank she was quick to swim up to the glass. One of the crew, Mashirao was humming a song and Momo could hear it through the glass. She tapped the glass in front of him, a wide smile on her face.
“You like that song, Momo?” Y/n asked her, he then turned to the crew, “I had a sound system set up so I’d be able to communicate with the merfolk while on this side of the glass. Which means any sound you make, they’ll be able to hear.”
Momo nodded her head quickly in agreement. Eijiro let out a deep bellied laugh, before turning to his crew.
“Well, give the lass what she wants!” Eijiro punched the shoulder of Mashirao.
Mashirao laughed in response and started to sing Randy Dandy-O, the song he had been humming. More of the crew joined in, causing the merfolk in neighboring tanks to swim up with their dinners to the glass to watch with excitement. Y/n stood a few feet from the group and looked around at the scene with a fond smile.
“I’ll have to bring you guys back more often if the merfolk like your singing so much!” Y/n called out to Eijiro who led his crew into a second song.
Y/n looked behind him at the glass of Shoto’s tank. He could faintly see the white and orange tail of the merman but he was keeping his distance for some reason. Walking over, he cupped his hands around his eyes and put his face up to the glass. Trying to focus deeper into the water, something suddenly came flying right where his face was, causing him to jump back. Looking at the bottom of the tank, a single shrimp lay there. Suddenly, a frantic looking Uraraka came scurrying up to Y/n.
“Um, excuse me. I’m sorry to interrupt, but Shoto is refusing to eat his food.” Uraraka looked at her feet.
“Why do you look so glum?” Eijiro’s booming voice asked, walking up to the pair.
“I’m sorry, Eiji. I’ve got to go deal with something. Uraraka. You used to give tours right? Could you show them the rest of the facility while I take care of this?” Y/n asked.
Uraraka agreed and Y/n quickly disappeared through one of the doors that led to the tank access area. Y/n puffed, ascending the ladder the Shoto’s tank platform, the sound of one of the volunteers bickering at the merman.
“Hey! Stop! Don’t throw your food at me!”
Y/n saw the sour-faced Shoto, arm reared back to throw another algae ball at the volunteer when he reached the top of the ladder.
“Hey!” Y/n barked.
Shoto’s head whipped to Y/n.
“Stop throwing food at him. He’s just doing his job. What’s got you so mad?” Y/n said, picking up pieces of food as he approached, dumping them all into the tub he snatched back from Shoto.
Shoto glared at the volunteer as he scurried out of sight down the ladder. Y/n tucked the tub under their left arm, his right hand found his hip. Tapping his foot, Y/n waited for Shoto’s response. Shoto watched Y/n’s feet, refusing to speak.
“Fine! Don’t tell me.” Y/n set the tub back in front of the merman. “Stop throwing your food at people.”
Y/n turned to leave. As he neared the ladder, he felt something thump against the back of his head, landing without a sound on the ground behind him. Turning back around, he sees a shrimp near his feet. Looking back up at the merman irritated, Shoto’s back was not turned away from him. Without hesitation, Y/n picked up the piece of shrimp, launching it back at the merman, hitting him in the back of the head with the shrimp before it sunk into the water below. Shoto turned around with an incredulous look on his face.
“Unlike my staff, if you’re going to throw food at me, I’ll throw it back at you,” Y/n spoke sternly with Shoto.
Y/n turned back around to leave before he was hit in the back of the head, this time with a ball of moss. He whipped back around, ready to chastise him when he saw the wide smile Shoto wore. He thought this was a game. Y/n’s stern look dropped, chuckling lightly as he picked up the ball of moss he had hidden in one of the containers he had given Shoto earlier that day.
Y/n crossed back over to the merman, squatting in front of him, holding out the ball. Shoto reached for the ball, but instead grabbed Y/n’s wrist, pulling him into the water. Y/n quickly bobbed back to the surface as Shoto swam around behind him, pushing him towards the center of the tank. Shoto turned Y/n quickly in the water to face him, hands staying on his shoulders. Y/n shivered in the water in his street clothes.
“Who is Eiji?” Shoto asks, eyebrows knitting together.
“Eijiro? He’s the captain of the boat I studied on. Why?” Y/n responded, confused.
“Why did you bring him here? Why is he the one you buy all our food from?” Shoto interrogated.
“He wanted to show his crew what merfolk were really like. And because he’s a friend. Hey, wait, why does that matter to you? Why did you pull me into your tank? It’s freezing to me,” Y/n questions back, placing his hands over Shoto’s to help him stay afloat in the cold water.
Shoto slid his hands out from underneath Y/n’s swimming a few feet away before speaking, “I don’t want to eat shrimp from him.”
Shoto disappeared back beneath the water without another word. Y/n rolled his eyes, paddling back to the platform, and getting out of the tank. By the time Y/n had found a towel and changed into dry clothes, Eijiro and his crew were gearing up to leave.
“Sorry I missed the second half. Shoto seems to be bothered by something.” Y/n apologized as he walked up to Eijiro, rubbing the towel into his hair.
Eijiro laughed at his soaked friend, “ I heard from Uraraka. Sounds like you’ve got a jealous siren on your hands.”
“Huh?” Y/n’s face filled with confusion.
“My dad used to tell me about how he became close with this mershark when he first started sailing. His first love, he’d always say. Would pick off any of the crew that got too close to him. Had to set some boundaries after the third first mate drowned. Anyways, We should head out. We’ve got an early day tomorrow.” Eijiro flashed his sharp teeth with a smile and pulled Y/n into a tight side hug before disappearing outside.
Y/n sat in his office, face in his hands as he sighed. Only about half of the merfolk were candidates for rerelease. Thankfully, the rest would be able to be used for education and research, granted they were willing to do so. The only one Y/n worried about was Shoto. He was the only one Shoto would really interact with, and even that had been sparse since Eijiro’s visit two days ago. Y/n wasn’t sure if he’d be able to stay at this facility or not. He had already filled and turned in the necessary paperwork for a permanent, but that wasn’t guaranteed. Y/n worried about what would happen if Shoto refused to cooperate with other marine biologists. Would they release him anyway? Hoping he’d be able to survive on his own? Shoto had never seen the world beyond what his tank would let him see. Y/n knew he wouldn’t last a day alone in the ocean. A harsh knock sounded on the office door before Uraraka came bursting in, out of breath.
“Baby merfolk. No mother. Way too cold.” She spoke quickly before disappearing back into the hall.
Y/n jumped out of his desk chair, following behind Uraraka to the loading dock. Opening the door, Y/n saw Tenya, the newest volunteer, running towards them, a tiny Butterfly Koi merpup in his arms. Transferring the baby to Y/n, he rushes down the hall towards the incubator before coming to a skidding stop.
“Why are you stopping?” Tenya asked, slowing down so he wouldn’t run into Y/n’s back.
“The incubator will be too hot for him,” Y/n said, turning and running through the doors towards the tanks.
Uraraka followed him fast, “but we don’t have any mothers.”
“I know,” called Y/n, climbing a ladder as fast as he could.
Once on the platform, Y/n ran, taking a deep breath in, and jumped into the water. He held the baby close to his chest and gave it as much of his own body heat as he could. Uraraka skid to a stop at the edge of the tank, watching Shoto swim faster than he ever had to the sinking Y/n. Shoto grabbed either arm of Y/n ready to pull them back to the service before he noticed the baby in his arms. Y/n shoved the child into Shoto’s arms, which he quickly took. Y/n swam back to the surface as fast as he could, gasping once he finally made it back to the surface.
“You think he’ll know what to do?” Uraraka asked frantically.
Y/n pulled himself out of the water with the help of Uraraka, “there’s only one way of knowing.”
Y/n slid down the ladder and ran around to the glass of Shoto’s cage. He stopped, heaving as he attempted to catch his breath. Tenya was soon next to him, wrapping a towel around his shoulders. Looking into the tank, Y/n could see Shoto curled into a ball in the corner that kept his bed. Y/n let out a deep sigh.
“It worked,” Y/n whispered, falling to the ground and sitting.
Tenya and Uraraka did the same as they watched Shoto start to fret over the child as it tried to wiggle out of his grasp as it warmed up.
“How’d you know that’d work?” Uraraka asked, a smile on her face.
“I didn’t,” Y/n admitted. “I sure prayed it would though. There wouldn’t have been a mother. Butterfly Koi mermen are the ones who care for the young. Are they sure there weren’t any merfolk in the area that was watching the baby?”
“Yeah,” Tenya started, “I watched the pup for the last three days and not a single merfolk ever approached the baby.”
“You did the right thing, Tenya.” Y/n said, falling onto their back, suddenly exhausted.

What They Bring to a Picnic
BNHA x reader
warning(s): none! <3 not edited
a/n: tyyyy @kirixfilms for the ideaaaa :)) <333 big hugs! my thoughts on what they’d bring to a picnic date :) and what a perfect way to send the summer season on its way!
characters: izuku, shoto, iida, kirishima, ochaco, bakugou, denki, sero, & mina
Izuku
Homemade Pinwheels
He spent an ungodly amount of hours on pinterest trying to find the perfect treat to bring just to land on pinwheels. He had a slap from reality when he really tried to imagine himself cooking some dish that had at least 6 hours prep time - he’s sweet and devoted but he’s also realistic. So what better than a light but filling meal than pinwheels!!
He was so proud of himself it was adorable. He opens the tray with a big smile and a little “ta-da!” He gets even giddier when you take a bite and send him a little thumbs up and hum, telling him it’s “so good!” with your mouth still full. Yeah yeah you just made his week
Shoto
Water & Homemade fruit & bread cakes
His first thought was definitely keeping the both of you hydrated and he almost settled on just bringing water - until he thought about it a little more and realized hm, maybe he should contribute with something else, too.
And then he remembered those cute little easy to make cakes you sent him on TikTok a while back and it was like a lightbulb went off in his head :) you really should’ve seen him all focused with his eyebrows furrowed as he tried to evenly spread the whipped cream and cut the bread just right. Not only that, but huffing and puffing while cutting the fruit as he debated with himself how big the slices should be. He even made the strawberries line up like little hearts under the bread even if you couldn’t see it, he was particularly proud of that.
Iida
Those mini sandwiches with no crust
He’s SO so proud of himself as he sets them out for you two to share; even periodically taking glances at you as you take your first few bites, smiling to himself proudly when you hum and smile. He even still asks you,
“Do you enjoy them? I made sure to be careful cutting the crust!”
As if your joy wasn’t obvious enough.
He even made a few different kinds! That way you had your options with flavors - he knows your favorite, but maybe you wanted to try something new!
Overall a very considerate gentleman :-)
Kirishima
Your favorite drinks & egg salad sandwiches
He tries to keep it light but yummy for his contribution to lunch, but just in case you don’t like them (cause he forgot to ask rip) he’s made sure to bring your favorite drinks so you’ll be happy somehow.
He cuts them into diagonals (after trying and failing to cut them into heart shapes of course - which he made sure to tell you about) and thinks it’s so chic and cute and is very proud of himself for the fact (what a sweetie).
Please give him a kiss on the cheek and tell him thank you, he’ll be wearing he biggest brightest smile the rest of the week about it
Ochaco
Homemade Rice Krispies & Melon Kebobs
Picnic dates have always been a must for her, they’re fun and cute so she already knew what she was gonna make - something tasty and simple!!
She made sure she whipped out the scooper and made the sweetest melon kebobs with honeydew, cantaloupe, & watermelon! And of course she made to make those extra sweet Rice Krispies :3
She was so excited to show you what she made and see what you made in return, too. She was adamant on feeding each other the first bites of what the other made, and she made the cutest face and gave you the biggest smile with her mouth full when you fed her that first bite of what you brought :,,(((. She also loved the way your lips tasted so sweet when she gave you little pecks after having the Rice Krispies
She’s decided she’ll have to make those for you more often <333
Bakugou
Charcuterie Board
As soon as you mentioned you wanted to go on a picnic date he understood the assignment. You had been nonstop talking about charcuterie boards and how bad you wanted to try one and then you mention a picnic date? Yeah you aren’t slick he knows what you’re throwing down.
He shows up all straight faced and whips everything out while you’re just gaping at him like, wow? And he just rolls his eyes like it’s nothing and crosses his arms, saying you better enjoy it and he doesn’t want to see a single scrap when this date is over cause he put a lot of work into this damn thing.
You guys definitely walk home with tummy aches from how full you are, but happy tummy aches <3
Denki
Pop rocks & Shrimp Chips
Listen, he believes in convenience when it comes to a picnic. He doesn’t plan on going all out cause he knows he’s just gonna want to snack and then either cuddle or explore! So of course he packs his fav snacks he can take on the go!
He does feel a little sheepish when he realizes you packed lunches for the two of you, and all he brought was candy and chips. But after you give him a kiss on the cheek and tell him to get over himself
Sero
Charcuterie Board
ANOTHER one here, he’s seen the tiktoks and Pinterest pics, he knows what you really want. Besides, he would love to show up with something fancy like a charcuterie board layout and impress you. And so he does exactly that.
You stroll up with your water and other various treats in your bag and walk upon him sprawled out next to that?? You’re a little bashful at first comparing what you brought in your own bag, but he assures you it’s cause he wanted to make you feel special and you feel a little bit better.
He tries feeding you some cheese on a cracker, but some of the spread drips onto your shirt and he laughs, so he’s off feeding duty from now on.
Mina
Assorted Fruit
Girlie busts OUT with the seasonal fruit collection.
She skips up to you and pulls it all out of her bag, pre cut in nice Tupperware’s and it’s so fresh. She even made some chocolate strawberries as a cute little side!
She’s all about being cute and feeding you fruit and giving you a smooch after, humming when she tastes the sweet left over remnants of fruit on your lips. She’s also all about taking the cutest pictures of you guys together and posting them everywhere - she has one of you with fruit juice dripping down your chin as her lock screen cause she’s obsessed <3
