The Crush – A Short Film Review
The Crush is a short film released in 2010 that revolves around an 8-year-old school student who has a crush on his school teacher and is ready to fight with her boyfriend in a draw to death.
The movie starts with a school setting where the teacher is giving her students some homework and then cheering them up with the news of a movie in class as the bell rang and students got ready to leave. After everyone was gone leaving only one boy from her class named Ardal (played by Oran Creagh) decided to stay back to give her a ring as a proposal to his teacher Miss Purdy (played by Olga Wehrly). Miss Purdy replied with a smile saying she will think about it not giving it much thought as it was a childish gesture from an eight-year-old boy. Ardal reaches home and is having dinner with his parents and they discuss how each of their day was, during this conversation we realize Ardal’s love for cowboy movies when he was intrigued by his father’s story who was an officer. After his father, Ardal suddenly questions his mother about when can someone get married to which she replied around the age of sixteen and Ardal promised his parents to keep him updated about his plans. Later in his room Ardal opens up a ten-year planning book and writes that he plans to marry Miss Purdy. The next day when he was outside with his mother they bumped into Miss Purdy and she shared the news about her being engaged to her fiancé and introduces him to them, Ardal picks up on how the fiancé treats Miss Purdy as he notices the fiancé pulling his teacher to a football completely ignoring her wish to have a celebratory lunch. After reaching home he tears out the page from his ten-year plan book that said ‘marry Miss Purdy’ and spies on his father who was hiding a gun in his closet. Sad Ardal goes to school the next day and by the end when his teacher asked him what was wrong, he clearly states that he can treat her better and that he would’ve taken her out on that lunch she wanted. Outside school, he notices Miss Purdy’s fiancé waiting for her in the car, so he reaches out to him and politely asks him to give up on marrying his teacher as she was his which was quite comical to the boyfriend because of Ardal’s age. To make him understand the boyfriend tell Ardal that Miss Purdy told him that Ardal is short and financially unstable and cannot take care of his needs also adds that she is a high-maintenance lady, not believing him Ardal challenges him to a brawl to death with a pistol.
The next day, Miss Purdy’s fiancé notices Ardal waiting for him outside the school, to humor himself he follows Ardal towards the fields and even mocks him saying that he forgot his pistol. Ignoring the fiancé Ardal pulls out his own and points it towards Miss Purdy’s fiancé. As Miss Purdy follows both the boys it was soon revealed that the gun was indeed real as Ardal’s father did get one because of his job. Both Miss Purdy and his fiancé urged Ardal to drop the gun as it wasn’t safe but the little guy didn’t listen and continued to threaten the fiancé to withdraw from the marriage. At first, the fiancé refused to give in and stayed firm but as things got heated and he realized how serious Ardal was about shooting him, he confessed everything from the fact that he never wanted to marry her and only proposed because Miss Purdy was being pushy about it. Even after he confessed Ardal shot the gun only to be realized that the gun was fake the entire time. Miss Purdy broke up and threw the ring in his face and later replaced it with the one Ardal gave it, Ardal also tells her the gun was supposed to be his future birthday present from his father. Ardal refuses to marry Miss Purdy by saying that he was not financially stable and she deserved someone who could take care of all her needs, to which Miss Purdy replies that the girl in his future will be very lucky.

7/10 This short film (approx 30 minutes) is disturbing and deals with incest and family abuse. Ari Aster is truly twisted - I remember being traumatized by “Hereditary” and also very uncomfortable during “Midsommer” but there’s a really sickening feeling emanating from this 2011 short film. This film isn’t really “gay” or “queer” per say, but deals with the homosexual incestuous abuse between a son and his father in a well-to-do, lovely nuclear American family. What boggles the mind is the type of “twist” here, that it’s the son who appears to become the main predator or perpetrator, and what may have began as a distorted “loving” relationship between a father and son, becomes an adult married man bursting down the bathroom door to rape his ageing father in the bath. Perhaps lots of metaphors and symbolism about how families destroy each other, but nevertheless, unsettling stuff here. The final murder scene is true Aster style, in fact, the whole tone fits in well with the horror champions oeuvre. It’s well-paced, easy to get through at 30 minutes, well performed and with some brilliant shots, a solid, traumatizing watch. I wouldn’t really place this in the “queer” cinema-scape, but more in horror and domestic violence, but what do I know. There’s something about Ari Aster.

short film review: Vincent.
The short film I have chosen to review is “Vincent” directed, written and produced by Tim burton (1982)
Vincent is a 7 year old boy who despite being so young has peculiar and dark desires that not your average 7 year old would fantasise about. Vincent wants to grow up to be just like Vincent Price, the renown horror actor who was also a significant figure in Tim burton’s childhood and there are subtle homages to Vincent Price throughout, such as referring to dipping his aunt in wax, relating to the film ‘house of wax’ that Vincent had starred in. The characterization of Vincent is very cleverly done, when he is in front of his mother he appears as a normal and average boy, but when he is left alone his facial expressions and character changes into that of a more sinister tone and his true innermost desires are revealed.
The signature animated style of Tim Burton was what was striking to me when I first watched Vincent, very recognisable due to the large eyes and long faces with very bleak surroundings and dark undertones. Some of the images portrayed in Vincent are recognisable visions that Tim burton later created, such as experimenting on his dog is very similar to a film he later produced called ‘Frankenweenie’ and so found it quite touching to see some of the small snippets of what Tim burton envisioned in this short film being made into developed films.
I found the use of rhyme in the narrative to be particularly effective; it gave some rhythm to the short that I found to be quite witty and comical despite the dark themes that are being portrayed. At first the use of animation complimented by the use of rhythmic tone makes the short seem like Vincent is a normal 7 year old, but then it is soon to be learnt that he has a very twisted view for such an innocent age. Vincent’s odd persona makes him seem far older than he actually is as most 7 year olds would not be reading Edgar Allan Poe and carrying out experiments, but the use of the sing song like narrative ironically reminds us that he is a still a child even though he is not ordinary
. I thought the switching between his dark fantasies to the normal façade he puts on in front of his mother is comical. Vincent is trying putting his malicious plans into motion but is constantly being hindered by his mother or other family members that expect him to be normal and like other children.
I would recommend this short film for lovers of dark horror or gothic horror. Tim burton is very renown for his dark animations and so this would be a genius short film for anyone who enjoys Tim burton’s more well-known feature films like ‘ the corpse bride’ and ‘the nightmare before Christmas’ as it follows the same dark gothic styled genre.

What's that one Short Film that you think deserves more recognition? Tag your pics with #ANoshOfLife to get featured.⠀ ⠀ This amazing post is by @reviewofageek⠀ ...⠀ #shortfilmreview (This is my first short film review) #NOSPOILERS ⠀ THE ROOMMATE (2018)⠀ Directed by Liam Smith in this thriller we encounter Dan who returns to university after his mid-term break finds out that his roommate has disappeared. At the same time he feels a sinister presence in the house which makes him wonder are the two scenarios related?⠀ ⠀ It's interesting to notice that despite shooting it in a day the film keeps it neat. No shaky cameras or rushed pacing. It's really well directed and keeps us engaging till the end. The ending was well made. It definitely keeps us wondering and baffled. Really good choice of music here. The lead Dan (Luke Williams) plays a decent role⠀ ⠀ The film has a bit of narrative issues. It surely gives us what we want but the film could have cut short by atleast a minute or two in order for the narrative to be sharp. Also the editing choices in the end didn't quite cut fine. It felt they were trying too hard for the thrills⠀ ⠀ Overall The Roommate is a decent short film with decent performances, good direction, music and definitely one must check out for the effort to do this film by them in a day⠀ .⠀ IT'S NOW AVAILABLE IN VIMEO :⠀ https://buff.ly/2ySuTOx⠀ ⠀ #cinephile #geeklife #geeklove #Review #movielife #moviebuff #musiclife #musicforever #moviecritic #instamovie #scifi #cinematography #moviereview #ShortFilm #ShortFilmING #horror #thriller #ANOL #mansilausdeo https://ift.tt/2Sa6xIT

Short film review - Dredd
There are films that does nothing for you, absolutely nothing. Films you have to do battle with just to watch ten more minutes of. Films you have to pause, play, and pause and play again, and in the end it might have taken you days to get through a ninety minute flicker show. And that is exactly what Dredd is for me; dreddful. Pun intended.
While it’s got nice visuals and plenty of action, I just don’t care about any of it because I feel like there’s no reason to, because I haven’t been given a reason to care.
So what’s the story? It’s set in a very depressing, dystopian future, and this dude - (Judge) Dredd - goes around judging people and ends up in a sticky situation. And that’s about it, it's a completely pointless film.
I’ll give this film 1,5/5 slain MaMa’s.

Faster than Light- Short Film Review
Written and directed by Adam Stern, Faster than Light is a 2017 science fiction short film that includes stars such as Ty Olsen, Karin Konoval, and Aliya O’Brian. The movie has been nominated eleven times and has won six awards and has a 6.5 review rate on IMDb.
The movie starts with dramatic music to help the audience feel excited when they a man sitting in a spacecraft which is immediately replaced by a piece of pop music telling the audience that this is a safe movie where nothing wrong can happen. The person sitting in the spacecraft is Commander Kane (played by Ty Olsen) who would be trying for the first time ever faster than light spacecraft to reach the orbit of Mars in three minutes. The movie also includes pieces where the commander is trying to lighten the mood of his colleagues specifically Sarah Johns (played by Karin Konoval). As the movie progress, we get to some great CGI effects and graphics where Commander starts the ship and gets ready to be the first man to travel faster than light. Realistic scenes have been shown in the movie where instructions and every second movement have been informed back and forth and the best part was when the audience is made to wait while the spacecraft reaches its destination with ominous music telling the worst is about to come. A moment of happiness arrives when contact between NASA and commander Kane was made after he was in high orbit on Mars. But it would not be a science fiction movie in space without malfunctions and aliens. As Commander Kane was making his way back, malfunction starts to occur and he loses control of the ship, panic surges as he increases his voice to tell the base station but by then the communication has been stopped and he is being pulled into yet another vector and being lost in space. While NASA is trying to figure out what is happening, we see the commander making his first-ever contact with an alien species as they completely eradicate him. In his final moments, we see him reminiscing his days with his wife (played by Aliya O’Brian) and his son (played by John Torrance) where he pushed the fears of his wife about the dangers including space travel, and assured them everything would be fine. His wife and son along the world saw the disappearance of Commander Kane.
Twenty-one Hours later just as NASA is giving up on the hope of a return an anomaly appears that is approximately 2.4 Clicks from ISS and when asked for visuals, we see aliens entering the orbit of Earth right where Commander’s wife and son lived, bringing him back to earth, more like microchipping him back like a hologram showing the alien’s advanced civilization. After the aliens leave life returns in the commander’s eyes as he calls out and says “It’s me”. But that is not where the movie ends, as the reunion was going on we see a glimpse of golden light flicker from the commander’s forehead, leaving the audience with suspense and wanting more.
The movie in the beginning showed the use of dramatic music and then suddenly shifted it to pop to lighten up the mood to shift it back to ominous in order to make the audience stay glued to the seat. There was no visible alien or communication done just as the mysterious moment that was made during the first contact. If we see the first contact from the alien’s Point of View, we could say that they just sent a little alien who ended up in their orbit to their rightful place
This story just leaves you with wanting more.
