Cayman Paradise Blue Sea Hideaway

Step out of your hectic life and step into a tropical paradise: the Cayman Islands. Whether you are seeking sun, sand or water adventures, this location offers it all. Relax on our lounge chairs whilst reading a novel on our private beach. Unwind on our hammock whilst swaying in the ocean breeze. Paddle in the calm waters in one of our tandem kayaks.

Children and marine enthusiasts alike will love snorkelling off of the remains of our dock, destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. Fish congregate around the pillars, offering our guests incredible snorkeling just a few feet from the shore! The best part about this snorkelling site: you’ll be the only one there, which cannot be said of many other snorkelling locations in Cayman.

This 500 square foot studio apartment is located on the idyllic East End of Grand Cayman. Here, you will avoid the honking cars and traffic typically associated with the rest of the island, especially the increasingly congested Seven Mile Beach. The eastern side of the island is an uncovered treasure: peaceful, quiet, and quaint. In East End, you will truly feel isolated from the world.

The unit is also conveniently located on the ground level of the house, which is advantageous for guests with mobility concerns. You are literally steps away from the hot tub and our white, sandy beach. Blue Sea Hideaway is perfect for couples who desire a little extra space and a full-sized kitchen to cook your meals. The kitchen has granite countertops, a blue backsplash and state-of-the-art appliances: ceramic cooktop, microwave/ convection oven, full-sized fridge and of course, a dishwasher. We also supply every small appliance you would require on a vacation, such as a toaster, coffee make, kettle and blender.

The spacious studio has a queen-sized poster bed. We have also added a single bed, so it will comfortably sleep 3 people in regular beds. There is also a pull-out sofa which is suitable for 1 or 2 children, , as it’s wider than a single, but not quite as wide as a double bed. 4 adults would find the studio too crowded.

The studio also has the option of adding on a 2nd bedroom, providing it is not booked by the guests in Snuggle Beach apartment. The 2nd bedroom is located between both units, with a hallway leading from each, so we can lock or unlock the door to attach this bedroom to either unit. There is an extra fee if you would like the additional bedroom and bathroom, please check with us first regarding availability.

Grand Cayman Snorkeling

Last time we took a cruise that was supposed to stop at Grand Cayman, the weather was against us. The seas were too high to berth safely at the George Town port, and the other port was full, so we ended up skipping the place. Which was sad, because we really wanted to do something we’d done before, which is to snorkel off the coast at the Eden Rock Dive Shop. You can rent all the necessary equipment and a locker there, and go into the sea right behind the shop.

But this trip, all went well, and we managed to have a leisurely late breakfast and joing the crowds getting tendered off the ship. IT’s too shallow near the island to park the ships right next to it, so they drop anchor some way out and smaller boats called tenders work as, basically, water taxis taking you to and from the island.

As usual, I stuck around near the shore while Toby swam out farther. We saw a lot more fish this time than we did the first time we were here, which was nice.

Anyway, on to the pictures!

WordPress chose to load these out of order, which is why there’s a fish pic, then two shore pics, then more fish pics. Oh well. I have made it so they should all link to alrger versions, if you want to click on them.

This dude is a blue tang, They’re ubiquitous. You may find references to blue tangs on the intartubes that say they’re blue, yellow, and black–those are Regal Blue Tangs. Plebian blue tangs are blue with some yellow bits on the tail, I think depending on how old they are.

And now we have the answer to the age-old question: why did the chicken cross the road?

To get away from the person trying to take a picture of it, of course! No, I did not chase it into traffic: this was a side drive with parked cars. Grand Cayman is full of feral chickens, as we learned the first time we came here. A hurricane blew through some years back and destroyed a bunch of chicken coops, and the surviving escapees have gone feral.

And fish. Lots of fish. The two in the center seemed inseparable; I assume one was a male trying to stick close to a female for breeding purposes.

SQUIIIIID!

A WHOLE BUNCH OF SQUID! The guy at the dive shop told us a school of squid is more properly referred to as a squad. A squad of squid. Squid squad. We saw a squid squad.

No idea what this spotty dude is, but we saw it.

A long-spined sea urchin. There were a lot of sea urchins…

…as you can tell from this pic of a blurry sergeant major fish and a bunch of sea urchins.

You’ll have to click on the picture to see the mottled fish in the middle, as it blends into the coral reef in the smaller version. No idea what it is, but it was pretty.

Not sure what these guys are, maybe the four-eyed butterflyfish? If so, Wikipedia claims they mate for life, so you probably have a small family unit there.

Toby’s flippers and a sergeant major fish. This fish and I made friends. The waves were a bit high, so I was hanging around the ladder getting a rest and the sergeant major was hanging around there, too, feeding on the algae growing on the underwater bits of the ladder. It was slightly cautious of me at first, but seemed to realize I wasn’t going to try to eat it, and then decided that I might feed it, so it got pretty close to me in between nibbles of algae.

A grey-pink fish. No idea what kind.

Bright blue and orange on one side, a dark one on the other. Don’t know what they are, either. I was trying to take a picture of each different type of fish I saw.

Toby took the camera and swam out farther to get some shots of the coral formations, which is what these last three pictures are. At least one has a school of sergeant majors.

Deep Trouble

[Here is a side story, set just after Chapter 43 of The Maker’s Ark, my current serial in progress. The start is here, and links to my other work here. The next update is planned for the week of April 16th.]

"Oh, it's no trouble," said Ambassador Wilson. "This requires no travel or formality; just conversation on a subject I find fascinating and an opportunity to witness something memorable from a safe distance. The diplomatic details are already taken care of and were not my problem for once." He and Sam were watching a placid Caribbean beach scene on the big screen in the off-duty lounge of the HQ ship of the EDU. Sam was glad for his company. He would have insights into whatever was about to happen. "All right," said Sam. "Then have some popcorn and fill me in. DASI said this would be an illustration of geopolitics that I might find educational as the human spokesperson for the Universal Proxy Partnership. I've been in over my head with that from the beginning." He sipped his tea. "Less so than many others in positions of power. I think you've done quite well so far. You don't have any illusions that most people think like you, and you have a firm grasp of the vast gulfs of misunderstanding possible between otherwise reasonable parties." Wilson gestured at the screen. "What is your perspective on why that Cook fellow is on the island?" "Money," said Sam. "He arranged for a drone strike on Black Swan, in an attempt to intimidate people away from meeting her in person. The EDU authorized targeted sanctions, so Black Swan made it selectively difficult for him to conduct business and transfer money remotely, among other things. A lot of his liquid assets ended up stuck there, even though that wasn't what he had intended, because that's where many of his banks and shell companies are based. The transfers in worked, but the transfers out didn't, so he flew in to try to correct that. Now his plane is having electronics problems." "Indeed," said Wilson. "But that amounts to saying he's there because Black Swan wants him to be. Any guesses why?" "System administration was my original specialty, so I don't have much of a clue beyond 'politics'." Wilson finished chewing his popcorn before continuing. "That, along with some quirks of international law and old compromises--and a bit of geography." Sam studied the building visible at the edge the beach. It looked like a luxurious vacation home, of the sort rented by the rich to relax close to their money. "I am pretty sure it has something to do with it not being US territory," she said. "I know the Cayman Islands are popular as a tax haven and off-shore banking spot. You think Black Swan is about to send them a message?" Wilson took another sip of tea. "That possibility has no doubt been worrying Mr. Cook since his plane troubles started. And worrying the local authorities as well. If the Cayman Islands become perceived as a dangerous place to keep money, their economy will suffer greatly. Which means the diplomatic reaction to what is actually about to happen will be muted." "But what--wait." Sam had noticed something odd in the water. "DASI?" she said. "Yes?" replied DASI. "Can you zoom in on those things in the water, offshore and to the left of center?" The image shifted and enlarged, becoming grainier in the process. The two objects were round and about the size of large coconuts, floating about six feet apart They were difficult to make out clearly because of the glare from reflected sunlight. They twitched suddenly, in unison, then were still again, except for the gentle bobbing of the waves. Sam's heart lurched. "Oh. Hell." She looked over at Wilson, then back to the screen. "Those are eyes, aren't they?" "Yes," he said. "I rather think they are."

"They... aren't moving," said Sam. "They're just watching." "For the moment. We seem to be a bit early," said Wilson, "While we wait, can I ask how much you know about the Deep Kingdoms?" "More than most people, but not really all that much. I picked up a bit while working on Sealord's deep com links. He needs special vid displays because his eyes see differently, even when he's shifted into his land form." "Ah," said Wilson. "I thought Doc built those." "He did some earlier ones, but then one broke while he was busy with a crisis, so I took over maintenance and updates for a while. Sealord seemed to like them. He's not nearly as creepy in person as the media portrays him--you just have to think of him as a squid with a temporary human body, instead of a human with a squid head." "Quite so. I can attest to Sealord's proficiency at diplomacy; his negotiation skills and facility with human language do give him a great deal of influence, but he is more like a speaker for a very loose tribal coalition than a monarch. That shows in how he shaped the Tokyo Compromise. Are you familiar with the history behind it?" Sam frowned. "I know it's an agreement that's held for a long time, between the Deep Kingdoms and several human countries, but primarily Japan. It's the reason giant sea monsters regularly attack Tokyo, but rarely bother other cities. It's kind of unfair to Japan, because it was originally an attempt to settle a dispute about the harm large-scale fishing was causing in the Deep Kingdoms, and China is doing much more of that now. But customs have grown up around it that mostly keep anyone from getting killed, and everyone is afraid things would get worse if they try to change it now." "An excellent summary. That is the essential motivation for maintaining many otherwise flawed international agreements, by the way; preventing incidents from escalating, a subject dear to my heart. In any case, the Tokyo Compromise was never intended to be a long-term solution; it was a stopgap arranged by Sealord and the Volunteer to address the Deep Kingdoms' grievances and stop the majority of the coastal attacks pending a formal treaty. Sealord insisted on a mechanism for informal expressions of displeasure, because he was concerned that commercial fishing interests would block any permanent settlement. And he was right; it's been more than fifty years, and no treaty was ever signed." He sipped his tea. "But the Tokyo Compromise did not cover pollution. If an oil spill seriously affects an ocean food web, the Deep Kingdoms can and have successfully demanded compensation in international courts. The offenders usually operate either oil tankers or offshore drilling rigs, and are anxious to avoid any retaliation." Wilson waved his free hand at the screen. "Which brings us to Mr. Cook. He and his brother own a number of petrochemical concerns that are notorious for oil spills, often ones that reach the Gulf of Mexico. But they have used dubious pretexts for ignoring international court rulings. The Deep Kingdoms don't have prisons for land dwellers and fines haven't been effective, so the Cook brothers are among the handful of humans that have been formally sentenced to death there." Another sip of tea. "Here is an interesting fact about Grand Cayman. It's right on the edge of the Cayman Trench, which is the deepest part of the Caribbean. And part of the Deep Kingdoms. The seafloor a few miles south of Grand Cayman slopes downward quite steeply; in some places, it's almost like dropping off a cliff." He smiled. "Or swimming up one, if you happen to be going the other direction." Sam stared at the huge eyes, which had just blinked again. "Is that thing really going to--" "Watch." ***** There was no warning; one moment Sam was about to ask another question, and in the next the view had shifted and she was watching a large crocodile stride ashore in apparent slow motion. It was wearing some kind of harness--was that a backpack?--and small creatures that looked like humanoid frogs scuttled beside it. But why was it moving so slowly? Oh. It wasn't slow. It was huge. The lack of a scale reference had fooled her. It was moving faster than a human could run, and the frog creatures--which were almost as big as humans--were falling behind. "DASI. Can we get audio?" "Privacy block," replied DASI. "There are locals inside that are not covered by the privacy removal sanction. But I can summarize: An alarm has sounded and there is a mixture of unjustified bravado and pointless arguments about the lack of heavier weapons among the guards. Ineffectual gunfire has begun from one upper window." The mammoth crocodilian reached the house, and the great snout swung left and right, smashing open the entire seaward wall. "Bravado and argument have ceased," said DASI. "Screaming has begun." The crocodile was now halfway inside the house--Sam doubted that its entire body would fit--and the frog creatures had caught up and were beginning to enter. "There are numerous injuries, but no fatalities. Gunfire has ceased. Sobbing and prayers have begun. Screaming continues." "That's enough, DASI," said Sam. "We get the idea." She frowned. "No fatalities? That's surprising." Wilson smiled. "Not if you understand the purpose. They are being quite careful, in order to--Ah, here we go." The crocodile had reemerged from the wreckage of the house, apparently uninjured, and began plodding back towards the sea at a more leisurely pace. The frog creatures flanked it on both sides. There was no visible change except... "That's a cage!" said Sam, waving at what she'd thought was a backpack. It had a window, and a human figure was pounding on it from the inside. "Indeed," said Wilson. "What are they going to do with him? You said the Deep Kingdoms don't have prisons." "They don't. They'll transport him to the edge of Deep Kingdoms territory, and then probably eat him. That is the traditional method." "Then why go to all that trouble? Why not just eat him in the house?" Sam watched as the crocodile and its assistants reached the water and disappeared back the way they had come. The last glimpse of the cage showed the human still flailing at the window. "Because if they killed him there, it would be assassination and arguably an act of war. A line would be crossed. This way it is an abduction of a non-citizen criminal who was an obvious flight risk, after refusal of a formal extradition request. A representative for the Deep Kingdoms did file a request this morning, which was turned down. So there is quite a bit of precedent." "That's kind of disturbing." "Yes. It does, however, show respect for established practice." Wilson set down his cup and met her eyes. "I'm sure the Cayman Islands will file a diplomatic protest. But they definitely won't start a war. I imagine you can appreciate the distinction, these days." Sam thought about her own status as a potential assassination target. "Yeah. I can." Wilson smiled sympathetically. "Welcome to international politics. Tea?" "I... Yes, thank you," she said. The sunlight glinted as brightly as ever on the water, as the waves began to smooth the disturbed sand.

Day 8

The last week has been an incredible kickstart to our season. It has proven that close quarters allow for personal and team growth. We’ve learned a lot about one another and who we want to be.

No trip is complete without one liners and situations that provide comedic relief, and this week was no different. It started on Day One as we arrived in Grand Cayman. On our ride from the airport to the hotel, a number of observations were made regarding businesses and landscape. Many thrills were expressed when we passed a Burger King which prompted a discussion about other fast food chains.

“it’s McDonalds,” Brooklyn said. “They have to have one.”

Please take note we never saw one.

We arrived at our hotel - Sunshine Suites - which is a sister hotel to the Westin across the street. Our amazing tour ambassador, Brittney, let the girls know about what that meant. The following one liner followed:

“I thought it was the West Inn. Not the Westin.” Thanks, Mo-Fries.

After our dinner on night one, we were walking back to the catamaran. Girls were really excited by some of the sea life by the pier.

“LOOK! There are SHARKS!!” said multiple team members.

Morgan comes sprinting with excitement and, after looking in the water, stated with disappointment “um no. Those are fish.”

A similar scenario happened when at the beach the next day. A friendly fish was swimming his way up and down the shore when someone shouted it was a shark while another thought it was a barracuda. Morgan and Kocsis heard and took off for the water. Morgan made it; Kocsis was not so lucky as she ate sand, heels over shoulders.

The bus was our comedy hall. Endless laughter and stories were shared while we explored the cayman countryside. As we passed some nicer homes and hotels, one of the girls exclaimed “oh my gosh! That hotel looks like our sand castle!!!”

On one particular bus ride, the girls were encouraging Sinclaire to give impressions of singers with the song “The Wheels on the Bus”. Brooklynn piped in on the opportunity to imitate ke$ha singing “wheels on the bus bus” in all her musical glory. Hilarity ensued.

Thursday was our first game against the Cayman Island National Team. Chickens roam freely across the island, and our game field was no different. Prior to the first whistle, Kocsis chased a chicken off the field. Please just picture that for a moment...

And while we are talking about games...we had a formal walkout on Saturday night. While starters approached the field to music, our sideline band busted out their air instruments.

One of our favorite bus rides home was after our game this weekend. The players have a great comfort for banter, and it was on full display with Emily and Sinclaire. We wish we could fully encompass the comedic relief they provided that night. A summary of some crowd pleasers are below.

One summer Emily had a checklist of everything she tried with peanut butter. She said it was really good on buffalo chicken. Then, Sinclaire said “Emily, every day you remind me why I should distance myself from you.”

Emily - “OH! You almost hit me with those stinky Stink-Claire socks!”

Emily responding to her teammates about getting dessert - “We can get pizookies at home with, like, regular money.”

Sinclaire about her hesitation for shaving her head right now - “Honestly, I am worried, because I am so tan right now that if I shaved my head it would be so white.”

Sinclaire to Emily when Emily was telling a story about a trip to Italy - “Do you even know how to speak Italian?”

Emily - “CIAO!!”

We had to commute in two smaller buses most of our tour. While the one bus was being entertained by Sinclaire and Emily, the other bus was singing in all their celebratory glory.

Today was our travel day home. Some of the girls snuck in their last rays of Cayman sunshine at the pool while others took advantage of the extra time to sleep in before we left. Our connection in Charlotte made for an adrenaline rush with close flight times.

Grand Cayman Dec 2018

Hello!

Great information here; it was extremely useful. I just returned from 10 days where I stayed near Rum Point, at the Sea Lodges. While this guide is tremendous, I can update.

Unfortunately there was an unusual front that came through midway into our stay that messed up the winds and the chop. But I got enough diving and snorkeling in to make some additions.

First and foremost, the Rum Point area is possibly the best fringing reef left in the Caribbean. Bonaire in 2013 outpaced what we saw at Rum Point now, but I wonder if the decline in Bonaire parallels what the rest of the basin has experienced.

From Sea Lodges all the way to the second bouy at Rum Point (going east to west) the variety and health of the goegonians, sea whips, sea fans, and LPS like brain corals, was fabulous and continuous. Stony corals was more mixed. The Elkhorn forest is gone….all dead remnants. There are maybe 5-6 small patches of both Elkhorn and Staghorn left. Also isolated patches of various purple and plating montiporas.

Large boulder formations were thriving. Saw a wide array of sponges and tunicate, and even a few purple tipped anemones. There are turtles and rays all over (did not see any.spottes eagle rays though). Saw also octopus and squid and all the expected reef fish. The Rum Point area is fabulous.

Starfish Point is sadly, now, gross. Too many ships and people destroying the Starfish, removing from the water. One jerk busted open a large conch then tossed the snail, defenseless, back into the water. Loud music. Just unpleasant. But there are Starfish, and pearly jawfish, there in abundance.

Spotts Beach is much nicer, turtles and rays abound. Sadly the current was too rough but others report very large healthy fringing reef to the east, out from the first large point (facing the water it’s too the left), maybe 150 yds out from the point. But I couldn’t swim against the strong current from the west side and didn’t much want to brave the rocks on a straight out attempt.

There were zero other good spots on the south end of the island. And as for snorkeling, zero else accessible from land.

What once were Barefoot and Queens Monument - Connelly are gone. There is no remaining beach, there are warning signs and chains, and trash/branches everywhere. People go to look but nothing much to see. There’s no access. I am sure there is good fringing reef out there. Need a vessel to access.

There is absolutely no way now to snorkel out to the reef from either location or from Turtles Nest. This from both the dive shop I used and locals. Too dangerous. Too far. And this was not due to the weather. It’s too dangerous and too far. You can snorkel it. But have a boat at the mooring.

East end is worse. Zippo to snorkel.

The diving, that’s another matter. I think the dives I did with Ocean Frontiers surpassed Belize and Roatan, the only non-Pacific area that could compete is Bonaire and that is because Bonaire is mostly shore dives.

I plan to return and will recheck these areas. But if you want to snorkel healthy reef from the beach on GC, I would say it’s pretty much limited to Rum Point and perhaps Spotts.

Thanks so much for your comments! Glad you got to experieince some of what I think is the better snorkeling GC has to offer. Agree it is some of the best in the Caribbean. While I think Roatan is overall a better snorkeling destination (not been to Bonaire), you get so much variation in environments in GC from Staghorn Forests to Boulder Gardens to Stingrays and Turtles spots, it’s hard to top.

Not sure of the location of the Elkhorn forests you referenced, but the Staghorn Thickets are absolutely thriving off Rum Point. I got worried and went out today to make sure they were not in any decline. They have quardrupled in areas over the last 10 years! You must have missed them on your snorkels. All the more reason to make sure you do return. Elkhorn has never been established in any great mass off Rum Point, at least since Ivan.

Agree Starfish Beach has sadly become a commercialized clusterfuck - floating play grounds, hucksters selling food and more boats than one can imagine. Add the folks removing the starfish from the water and I’m shocked there’s still one or two of these unique creatures left within a quater mile of the point.

As for Queen’s Monument, while the Connolly’s Cove access may be gated, there is a public beach access pathway immediately adjacent to the property folks can use to get to the water. There's never been any meaningful beach there, just a pebble shore. Just now need to park along the roadside.

Barefoot Beach is and reamins a public beach access, just as listed in the guides. While the beach may have eroded from its former Robinson Caruso splender, the snorkeling reamins unchanged and is certainly worth a visit.

Access to the Bodden Town area reef is easily accessible from Governor Morris Public Beach, as outlined in the guides.

Not sure what the dive shop communicated these three areas are only accessible by boat, but is seems in error.

East End’s Charlie’s Shoal is a close to shore, hidden gem and the barrier reef and other dive/snorkle sites like Sunset Reef are accessible for strong swimmers. Plus if you want to see reef sharks, the East End is the place.

Again, none of the spots listed in my guides require boat access for a strong swimmer and experieinced snorkeler, so realy puzzeled by those dive shop comments.

Other areas around the island can be worth a visit. I am partial to Eden Rock in George Town and Cemetary Reef on Seven Mile Beach. Heck, I even enjoy the patch reef at Govenor’s Beach on Seven Mile for the sheer density of marine life on an otherwise desolate section of beach.

When you return, plan a day trip to Little Cayman to enjoy what is in my opinion some of the truly outstanding snorkeling remaining in the Caribbean. I think you’ll be pleased. FWIW, I find the summer months to present the conditions most conducive to a positive snorkeling experience.
