11, 17, and 20 for the book ask!!
What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
One of them was Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg z"l. Leslie, I adore you, but you are a very poor historian and this book, read as 'research', is kind of a joke.
Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
answered this in the previous ask, but here's another: The Bacchae by Euripides! definitely also qualifies as a book that's been "out for a while" dfjskfdsfhdjks. despite being literally ancient and me not being a huge classics (in the greek/roman sense) fan, this was super readable, entertaining, and even funny.
What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
One of them was "The Call-Out" by Cat Fitzpatrick. I love Cat, but this book sucked honestly. I was cringing through the whole thing - the rhymed tidiness & contrivedness of every verse was just a lot, especially for a long poem.

Recs so far:
The Emissary / Yoko Towada (by @angladeofthesea)
Our Wives Under the Sea / Julia Armfield (by @nightlyponder)
Our Share of Night / Mariana Enriquez (by @shivtomdivorce)
Something New Under the Sun / Alexandra Kleeman (by @hyperbolic0range)
The Fortunate Fall / Raphael Carter (by @mmmondegreen)
The Drowning Girl / Caitlin R. Kiernan (by @mmmondegreen)
High as the Waters Rise / Anja Kapmann (by @metamatar)
Feed Them Silence / Lee Mandelo (by @swallowtailed)
feel free to share yours in the replies, and i'll add them on if i haven't read them already! i'm adding them all to a goodreads shelf along with other recs/things i personally want to read this year.
should i make a small 2024 tbr? feel free to leave your recs for books below
i'm thinking of making a "must read" tbr for 2024 of maybe 50 or fewer books on substack and include some of your recs. i usually read about 300 a year so this is a small fraction (most of the ones i read are for my academic/creative work, for reviews/blurbs, and/or based on vibes alone)
but i do want to keep ppls' recs in mind when i plan what to read ++ have some i really need to read this coming year so!
