Spotted in the shitamachi: fresh water left outside a shop, and one of the stray cats it’s meant for. Neko-chan was sprawling in the shade in a gap between two buildings. It was very, very hot.

Homes and businesses (often in the same building) in Tokyo’s shitamachi. That last one made me smile. “It’s just a J, really...”

Another amble from Asakusa to Ueno via Kappabashi and Matsugaya. This area is old and traditional and grungy and I adore it. I discovered a shrine tucked away between buildings, and a delightful green street, which is a rarity in the shitamachi (blue-collar eastern Tokyo).

Shitamachi streets. The shitamachi is the old, traditional, blue-collar neighbourhoods of eastern Tokyo. Houses are small and hearts are big.
