review: okay, let me say that this book is great AS A YA. Yes, of course it’s a slow burn (I’m a sucker for those) but it does have some things I just didn’t like.

Book review: Shipped by Meredith Tate

A cute (if slightly predictable) You’ve Got Mail-style romance, featuring two IRL enemies who bond over their favourite TV show online.

At school, Stella Greene and Wesley Clarke are rivals battling it out for the chance to become valedictorian. Online, they’re both huge fans of the short-lived cult classic Warship Seven. When a local convention is announced, the two plan to meet up, unaware of each others’ IRL identities.

Stella and Wesley’s rivalry is told from both sides with the narrative switching between the two protagonists, occasionally interspersed with Warship Seven scenes which nicely parallel the protagonists’ lives. Warship Seven is, of course, a thinly veiled fictional Firefly, and as a huge Firefly fan myself, I enjoyed how Tate incorporated the sci-fi story and its fandom into the novel. I also liked how Tate used her fictional story-within-a-story to comment on the different sides of fandom, from ship wars to misogyny within sci-fi fandoms.

There’s a lot to like about Shipped, although the main storyline is fairly predictable and none of the secondary characters especially stood out to me. Still, enemies-to-lovers is a classic trope for good reason and Wesley and Stella made for a cute couple. Overall, it’s an entertaining read, if not a particularly memorable one.

last song: You know I’m not sure. The real answer is whatever was on at Walmart while I was there but idk what that was (though I know I heard Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen). I THINK the last thing I deliberately listened to was Waltz of the Flowers by Tchaikovsky which is a GORGEOUS piece I put on while I was doing yoga. 

last movie: Hmmmmm it was actually Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian because I wanted some Ben Barnes after I watched Shadow and Bone. I liked the book better tbh; I was upset they decided to make the movie a dick measuring contest between Peter and Caspian when in the book it’s nothing but mutual respect (also they don’t meet until almost the end lmao).

currently reading: I’m trying to start Shipped by Meredith Tate (I have it open in my ebook app and everything) but what I’m actually reading is this adorable webcomic Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (link). Also on deck is Why We Swim by Bonnie Tsui.

currently watching: I JUST finished Guardian which is a cool c-drama you can find with subs on youtube, thank you @buriedbybooks for the push. Technically I am vaguely following 9-1-1 and 9-1-1 Lonestar but I’m not super invested so I’m not sure it counts, but they are currently airing at least. Also gearing up for a Ted Lasso rewatch which I ADORED.

Can two IRL enemies find their happily ever after online?

SYNOPSIS

Stella Greene and Wesley Clarke are Gene Connolly Memorial High School's biggest rivals. While the two have been battling it out for top student, it's a race to the bottom when it comes to snide comments and pulling the dirtiest prank. For years, Stella and Wes have been the villain in each other's story, and now it's all-out war. And there is no bigger battle than the one for valedictorian, and more specifically, the coveted valedictorian scholarship. But Stella and Wes have more in common than they think. Both are huge fans of Warship Seven, a popular sci-fi TV drama with a dedicated online following, and the two start chatting under aliases—without a clue that their rival is just beyond the screen. They realize that they're both attending SciCon this year, so they plan to dress in their best cosplay and finally meet IRL. While tensions at school are rising and SciCon inches closer and closer, the enemy lines between Stella and Wes blur when a class project shows them they might understand one another better than anyone else—and not just in cosplay.

REVIEW

THIS IS SUPER ADORABLE!!! This is super nerdy and brings back a lot of memories with all the fanfiction writings, fan videos, and cosplaying. I'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope but YA contemporary romance isn't really my thing. I was nervous to start but this book is so cute and I like it a lot, like A LOT! I can't put it down. The characters are likeable and I love their snarky banter and the pranks they pulled to each other. I laughed a lot reading this. The development between them being enemies and slowly change into something is well written. They both also have personal family problems and hence why both of them are being so competitive from the start.
