Transform Your Kitchen with a Fresh Coat of Paint
Tumblr media
DAVID A. LAND
Are you building a new house and planning your dream kitchen? Or maybe you’re craving a fresh, new look for your existing kitchen. It’s true what they say: The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where you and your family will spend lots of time, and where your guests will likely end up congregating. It should be a space that feels inviting and relaxing and also delivers the style and personality you want your home to reflect. Do you want a light and airy kitchen? A happy and whimsical space? Or a cozy, rustic kitchen? No matter the look, your starting point should be in establishing the color palette. An all-white kitchen will always be a classic, timeless look, but don’t be afraid to bring in some color, even in a small kitchen. The paint color—even the exact shade of white—you choose for the walls will instantly set the tone.
You're reading: Transform Your Kitchen with a Fresh Coat of Paint
One of the ways to make the biggest impact is to paint your kitchen cabinets. Whether it’s painting a dark wood a bright white to lighten your space, or taking white cabinets to a deep, saturated hue that creates a warm, cozy kitchen, or even a new coat of a bright yellow or blue to add a punch of personality, changing the color of your kitchen cabinets will instantly transform your room. (If you’re planning to go the DIY route, read this article for tips on how to paint kitchen cabinets. Yes, even laminate cabinets!) For even more inspiration, check out some of our favorite kitchens for many more kitchen decorating ideas, including kitchen island ideas, hardware inspiration, lighting, and even some ways to use wallpaper.

Pale Blue and White
This blue and white combination brings us all the cool, calm coastal vibes in this kitchen designed by interior and textile designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas.

Blue-Black
This moody hue is making us crave a rainy day indoors with a cup of tea while bread bakes in the oven. It is the perfect dull blue that still feels warm and rich.

Historic Blue
This timeless blue is be a part of Benjamin Moore’s historic collection. It feels traditional but fresh in this kitchen designed by Grace Mitchell, especially off of the copper and bronze lighting.

Gray and White
We love gray in any room and especially in this kitchen designed by Sara Davis. The soft gray cabinets pop against the dark brown wood floors, creating a modern yet simple combination.

Canary Yellow and Blue

Look no further than the classic yellowware bowl for proof that blue and yellow make for a timeless country combo, as seen here in this 98-square foot galley kitchen that features canary-yellow cabinets and quilt-like cement tiles. The petite 20-inch range maximizes cabinet space in the small kitchen.

Pure Black
When homeowner Bailey McCarthy moved into her century-old Texas farmhouse, the wall were a boring beige and the cabinets, which vary in height, were white. “Painting everything black seemed like a good way to make the cabinets blend in with the wall,” says Bailey. She balanced the dark statement color with butcher block countertops and brass hardware and lighting.

Soft Taupe
When you want to add little color but don’t want it to overwhelm, look to a soft taupe. The appealing neutral adds a warm, but airy, swathe of color. It’s a color that also pairs well with stained wood cabinets.

Sunny Yellow
Designer Alison Kandler and homeowner Jenn Chiarelli found the perfect sunny shade for the kitchen island in Jenn’s bright California farmhouse by pulling paint chips of colors that simply made Jenn feel happy. Then they found ways to incorporate the hues into the kitchen to create a look that is as colorful as it is cheerful. The black woven stools add a grounding element to the candy-colored space.

Gray Green
Designer Heidi Caillier chose a soothing green—that is a little bit gray and a little blue—for the Shaker-style cabinets. “It changes with the light,” Heidi says. “It also feels traditional to me, which is what I really wanted.” The color pairs particularly well with soapstone countertops and unlacquered brass bail pulls and knobs. Six-inch terra cotta hex tiles add distinct richness to the artfully layered kitchen.

Off-White
When you have a lot of natural wood in your kitchen, pure white walls can feel too stark, especially if you’re going for a rustic kitchen look. Instead, choose a warm white that has just a touch of gray in it for a color that complements wood tones and works well with other warm neutral colors.

Turquoise Blue
You couldn’t pick a better blue than the color of the original paint found on these salvaged tongue-and-groove boards. The turquoise tone compliments the buttery-yellow appliances, knotty pine floors, and barn wood cabinets to create a charming rustic farmhouse-style kitchen.

Pure White
There is nothing more timeless, yet completely fresh, than an airy all-white kitchen. The look works especially well with kitchens that have varying textures (both literally and visually), such as the shiplap planked walls and open shelving in this dreamy kitchen, which keep an all-white space from feeling stark and sterile.

Washed Turquoise & Buttery Yellow
To give her kitchen cabinets a slightly weathered look, Jolie Sikes of the Junk Gypsies first coated the cabinets with blue interior oil stain, then used a rag to apply and partially rub off a layer of wood stain. “Embrace color,” says Jolie. “Just because kitchens are utilitarian rooms doesn’t mean they should be quiet, sterile, or boring.” The buttery walls, combined with the natural wood stain on the windows, trim, and beams, create a warm backdrop for the room’s bold cabinetry and accents such as Jolie’s barstool mix—a pair of swiveling red tractor seats plus a vintage vinyl-covered number.

Bright Green
In her South Carolina home, homeowner Lauren Northup looked down for her color play. Taking her color cue from the grass green floors at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, she choose to paint the kitchen floors a striking green. “Blues and greens mean rest, home, and happiness to me,” says Lauren. “This color on my kitchen floor is a good balance with the bright white walls and cheerful checked curtains.”

Sky Blue
In their cozy converted schoolhouse project, designers Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke of Madcap Cottage looked outside for the kitchen’s color inspiration. They removed the small room’s drop ceiling and installed tongue-and-groove rafters, now swathed in a dreamy shade of sky blue—a design trick seen on Southern porches. “The color draws the eye up,” says Jason, “which makes the room feel like it stretches to the sky.”

Crisp White
Don’t feel badly if you’re a bit picky. Marsha Ahearn, the owner of this summer retreat in Martha’s Vineyard, painted her kitchen with a 50/50 blend of two shades to get her ideal white. It’s the perfect backdrop to let your brightly colored accessories pop.

Cheery Yellow
This sunny kitchen proves there is no such thing as too much of a good thing. Its Shaker-style cabinetry, as well as its walls and those of the adjoining breakfast nook, are all awash in a bright and cheery yellow. Glass cabinet fronts and white trim, fixtures, and appliances add a punch against the solid color and help keep the space feeling light.

Forest Green
Most people opt for white in the kitchen, but this rustic kitchen is bathed in moodier hues. The paneled cabinets are painted in an earthy forest green while the fir beadboard is a golden brown—giving the 75-square-foot small kitchen a jewel box feel. An ivory apron-front sink offers a burst of brightness.

Celadon Green
In this Massachusetts beach house kitchen, the Wood-Mode cabinetry is painted a pretty celadon green that is crisply set off by a white subway tile backsplash. It’s a pairing that brings a kitchen pretty color without overpowering. Cape Cod artist Tim Dibble custom-carved the kitchen’s slate apron-front sink to incorporate local icons: a windmill, whale, lighthouse, and the word “riptide.”

Bright Yellow and Blue
There’s nothing more appealing than a blue-and-white kitchen. And you can’t beat a yellow kitchen for a happy setting. We say combine the two for a true win-win. This Kentucky kitchen proves the point beautifully with its pairing of a warm blue-and-white quilt-patterned tile backsplash and a light and bright yellowy-green painted island. White wall cabinets and butcher block countertops keep things balanced.

Kitchen with Blue Island
When this custom builder decided to build a home for themselves, the location was obvious – his wife had grown up spending her summer‘s on Mayflower Beach in Cape Cod.
All of the cabinetry and millwork for the home were crafted by Lewis & Weldon Custom Kitchens (previously featured here & here). The goal was to create a down-to-earth simple beachy theme that gave the feeling of always being there.
The contrast of classic white, mixed with the Benjamin Moore “Old Navy” blue island echoes the feeling of the ocean and beach that are just steps away.
The choice of glass front refrigeration, glass sides of the upper cabinets, and no door to the pantry, all work to add depth, lighten the space and create character.
Now, the toughest decision is to know whether you should stay in and cook dinner in this great space, or go for a walk on the beach.
  Kitchen with Blue Island
A white kitchen with blue island is truly a classic choice that stands the test of time. This kitchen also features wide plank hardwood flooring and the shiplap walls.

$750,000 Homes in Mississippi, Missouri and Arizona
Oxford, Miss. | $750,000
A newly built house with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, on a 0.31-acre lot
Adapted from Allison Ramsey Architects’ cottage plans, this home was constructed in 2019 by its owner, who is also the listing agent. It is 10 minutes on foot from the University of Mississippi campus and Courthouse Square, the historic heart of Oxford and the location of what is said to be the oldest department store in the South (Neilson’s, founded in 1839). Stone Park, with its new activity center, and the Oxford Depot Trail, a biking and pedestrian thoroughfare that was once a stretch of the Mississippi Central Railroad, are two blocks away.
Size: 2,529 square feet
Price per square foot: $297
Indoors: The front door takes you into room with shiplap-clad walls and bleached engineered hardwood floors. On the left is the living area, which centers on a gas fireplace. On the right is the kitchen, which has an island with seating, quartz countertops and a Smeg oven and hood. Floating shelves and glass-fronted upper cabinets lend a clean feeling to this room and the adjacent dining area. Beyond it are a pantry, study and laundry room.
Straight ahead of the front door, beyond a staircase with metal cable railing, is a master suite. The bedroom is decorated with metallic cork wallpaper; the bathroom includes a natural-stone-trough double sink and a wet room: a glassed-in area with a soaking tub, rain shower head and hand-held sprayer. The walk-in closet is fitted with storage from the Container Store.
The second floor has two carpeted guest rooms, each with a walk-in closet with custom organization and an en suite bathroom. There is also a media room with a sliding barn door and climate-controlled storage, and a bonus room that could be put to any number of uses.
Outdoor space: The house has a covered front porch and a small rear deck that steps down to a brick patio and the yard. Garden beds surround a lawn and could be planted with evergreens for privacy in place of a fence. Parking is in a rear carport.
Taxes: $4,000 (estimated)

Kansas City, Mo. | $739,000
A 1967 modern-style brick house with four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre corner lot
This home is just a few blocks uphill from Country Club Plaza, a historic shopping center with Spanish-style buildings, whose holiday-season lights are visible from the property’s roof deck. The nine-acre Westwood Park is a five-minute walk west, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a mile and a half east. The owners recently freshened all the interior paint and installed new carpet.
Size: 3,632 square feet
Price per square foot: $203
Indoors: The three-story house puts social and private spaces on the main level, minimizing the number of stairs occupants need to climb. The open-plan layout centers on a living-and-dining room with a floor-to-ceiling window, a white-painted brick wood-burning fireplace and a beamed ceiling. A partial wall of bookshelves blocks the view of the staircase; beyond it is an eat-in kitchen lined in floating wood lower cabinets with cultured-stone countertops and laminate upper cabinets. Penny-round tile covers the backsplashes. The breakfast area opens to a backyard deck built around an oak tree. The floors throughout these rooms are stained hardwood.
The three carpeted bedrooms on this level include a master with direct access to the backyard deck. The master bathroom has double sinks in a concrete-and-wood vanity. There is also a laundry room.
Upstairs is an office with red linoleum flooring and access to the roof deck. On the walkout lower level, the owners removed one of two garages and created a bedroom, a full bathroom and a rec room. This section has a private exterior entrance and could be rented.
Outdoor space: The spacious roof deck has wood fencing around the perimeter and built-in benches. Parking is in the remaining two-car garage at the home’s base.
Taxes: $2,333

Sedona, Ariz. | $725,000
A three-bedroom, two-bathroom house built in 1990 on a 0.78-acre lot
This one-story stucco-clad house with a clay-tile roof is in West Sedona, less than a mile below stores, services and entertainment along Route 89A. The property of more than three-quarters of an acre is planted with mature trees and has red-rock views. The house is unusual in the area, as it is not governed by a homeowners’ association; a casita could be added and rented out for any length of time.
Size: 2,601 square feet
Price per square foot: $279
Indoors: A living room with a vaulted ceiling and travertine floor includes a wall of glass, providing access to a rear patio. In a corner is a kiva fireplace with a granite-topped travertine hearth. A dining area flows off the opposite side of this room, with French doors opening to another patio. It connects to an upgraded kitchen with oak cabinets, granite countertops, a mobile island and a windowed breakfast bay. Among the appliances are a double wall oven and a Viking cooktop.
The master suite includes a walk-in closet and a private terrace with a trellis woven with wisteria vines. The master bathroom has double sinks, a jetted soaking tub and a glass-walled shower. The two guest bedrooms are on the opposite side of the home and share a hall bathroom. There is also a laundry room between the attached two-car garage and the kitchen.
Outdoor space: The four patios, one on each side of the house, open the living space to the surrounding nature and the wildlife that wanders by: Elk, deer, javelina and more than 30 bird species have been observed by the owners.
Taxes: $4,100

1927 Kitchen Remodel
It took us roughly 6 months and costed approx. $7500 for materials. I did all the work myself so that saved us a ton of money. We had an office where we set up our microwave and fridge. A lot of of eating out and a lot of easy foods. Just have to get through it as quickly as possible.
I had absolutely zero experience before this project. Just goes to show if you are willing to deal with the inconvenience of 6 months without a kitchen and doing all the work there is definitely money to be saved on almost any project.
Tumblr media
This what it started with. Cabinets were too far gone. We wanted the sink in front of the window, and we wanted the oven where the sink is now. This made much more sense from a practical standpoint. Not much cabinet space, and no room to cook with the oven arranged in the corner.
Tumblr media
First puncture of wall. No going back at this point. I had never heard of lathe and plaster before so ripping all this open was eye opening to say the least.
Tumblr media
We loved this old built in cabinet, but our idea was to open up the kitchen to the rest of the house. The built in had to go. We salvaged some of the decorative doors for display at a later time.
Tumblr media
Cabinets out. the wall to the right is the one we wanted to remove to open the room up. We also struggled to figure out what to do in this empty space. The stairs above the refrigerator make it an awkward space to fill. We decided to frame it in and create a walk in pantry here.
Tumblr media
Walls completely stripped. New electrical in, old knob and tube out. New plumbing in for the sink under the window.
Tumblr media
Tent I built to keep all the dust out of the rest of our house. It worked great and pulling it down at the end was like a big reveal of the finished product.
Tumblr media
Framing in the pantry.
Tumblr media
Finally looking like a clean slate.
Tumblr media
We went with butcher block countertops and I stained and finished them using waterlox. Yes it is food safe, but no I don't plan to cut on these counters anyway.
Tumblr media
We used a cabinet as an island for some extra storage.
Tumblr media
Farm sink from IKEA, 1/3 the cost of most farm sinks. Excellent quality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made this hood cover to add a little pizazz. I ended up having to sand and re-stain it because I am an amateur and didn't realize the wood glue had bled all over the place.
Tumblr media
Decided to do shiplap covering everything besides the backsplash. Painting that looked fun, we hired someone to paint which was the best decision of my life.
Tumblr media
Back-splash went in next.
Tumblr media
Painted shiplap final product. Pantry shelves going in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love all the look from natural wood, and the mix of texture between the wood, the smooth cabinets, and the brick. Simple cabinets really let the wood accents pop.

Tour a Riverfront Home That Draws Inspiration From the Great Outdoors
After demolishing an older home on this property along the Tennessee River, architect Josh Cooper, principal at JCC Design Studio, erected a three-story home, taking inspiration from the client's love for Belgian-style architecture.
For the home’s exterior, Cooper incorporated materials like mountain stone, durable Siberian-larch siding and LifePine roofing.
"The roof is extra special, because there isn't a single straight line in the roofline," says Cooper. "The third floor is tucked up underneath an elegant curving roofline, creating these great lines that bring the scale of the house down dramatically."
With soothing earth tones and natural finishes, the home’s interior echoes its beautiful exterior finishes and riverfront setting.
"On the outside, natural materials like wood and stone are used, and I wanted to carry that through the house," says Adele James Glascock, an interior designer with Adele James Interiors. "This house overlooks the river, so of course it was important to have that as a focal point - and to incorporate colors from the river and its surroundings into the home."
Throughout the home, you'll find a mix of organic materials and colors. Durable larch-wood floors are paired with shiplap walls and rustic beams. Sculptural metal light fixtures draw the eye upward to the warm wood-paneled pine ceilings.
In the kitchen, wood cabinets painted in a neutral green-gray hue are set off by a brick backsplash. Other organic-inspired materials include soapstone countertops, a concrete and wood island, and a stainless steel oven hood with a patina.
In the adjoining living room, white shiplap is juxtaposed with a dark beige trim to help define the space. In the main living area of the home, doorways framed with arches lead from the living room to dining room to kitchen.
"They act as a unifying part of the main level and public spaces," says Cooper. "They are intended to be the core language of the house."
While the bones of the house are neutral, Glascock layered in textures, finishes and colors to bring each space to life.
Glascock chose to outfit the house in an array of antiques, vintage tchotchkes and furnishings made from reclaimed materials, adding a storied charm to the home.
The top floor houses three bedrooms, while the main floor is home to a large master suite with a private courtyard.
The family-friendly house is fully equipped for entertaining, with a basement featuring an additional guest suite, a bar, arcade games, billiards and a place for kicking back and watching the game.
The party room opens up to a large patio area, where there’s even more space for entertaining - a fire pit, bar area, pool, cabana and cozy carriage house.
Get the look at home
Draw decorative inspiration from your home's setting. For instance, the colors, materials and finishes used throughout this home echo the earthiness of its riverfront setting. "When you go to a cocktail party, you don't put on tennis shoes," says Glascock. "You need to be appropriate for where you are and what you have."
Add character to a room by applying shiplap or painted wood to the walls. For an easy-to-install, affordable option, check out Stikwood's adhesive wood paneling.
For rooms with neutral bones, layer in dynamic decorative elements that have color and texture, like artwork, tchotchkes and fabrics.

For kitchen designs, there are very few options as being noted over several furniture designs. For instance, SMEG refrigerator in retro style and old farmhouse sinks fit in this category of design options.  They have been considered stylish and most sought after for past some decade and it’s quite likely that they will still be popular in coming year.

Through blending classic mixes which goes with test of time and also use influences from various eras mixed with latest designs of bathroom & kitchen preferences. These rooms are most likely to become outdated. You can create a space using design which you will love in the present as well for 10 years to come.
Vintage styled appliances design establishes a classic feel. Fresh and open shelves, plants hanging out on the hood of the range give it a modern day look. According to a known interior designer, blending different eras is all about guts. Take kitchen for an example, having a vintage French cabinet with copper pans provides old world charm with other modern appliances and parts of the kitchen with a more modern effect and feel.
Combination of design elements from different eras in a bungalow’s bathroom assures that it won’t appear outdated soon in just some years down the lane. A mix of clawfoot tub with worn vintage rug and some trendy shiplap and brass hardware & type of neutralizing effect happens with time.
Tumblr media

Quirky and original built cabinet matches with the modern style shelving design which is open. Choosing a dark paint in the design makes the shelves look modern style and seems floating wood pop which is also very easy to change further whenever you want to go in for a new look.
Some things are classic and never go out of style. Things like copper pots, if taken care of properly can be used forever. Same is the case with good quality cast iron or even with good looking cutting board. If you are searching to invest in cookware so that you can show it off for years, choose tried and tested classic designs. SMEG fridge whenever is in the kitchen instantly gets the idea why. In an example of a kitchen, fit the sleek looking SMEG oven and get the old world charm look.

Many designs from contemporary catalogue, select fresh and modern ones while the vintage furniture and the claw foot tub ground is history now.

We Predict These Kitchen Trends Will Be Everywhere in 2021@|what is new in kitchen design@|https://ift.tt/3h75BTp
Tumblr media
DANA GALLAGHER
While the all-white kitchen will probably never go out of style, there are lots of new design trends for 2021 that will make you equally happy. Think: natural elements with some pops of color as well as a visit to the dark side with colors you might never expect. We know, we know. You’ve already carefully chosen every appliance, picked out each piece of hardware, and planned your kitchen design to a T, but there are ways to dip your toes into the world of color without messing up your rustic farmhouse kitchen aesthetic. On the color front, why not try painting your ceiling a fun color, like Haint Blue? How about hauling in some colorful appliances?

Tumblr media
Join the Country Club today and enjoy exclusive access to home tours, seasonal craft projects, recipes and, more!
If you’ve been wanting to layer in more natural elements, try “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” items. These are words that are popping up more and more, with many companies offering green solutions for cabinets and shelving. You can also think about bringing in handmade tiles in materials like terra-cotta and cement—a great solution for adding a little more soul to your space, regardless of whether or not you opt to completely switch over to a farmhouse style vibe.
When it comes to countertops, quartz is quickly becoming an affordable and low maintenance alternative to our beloved marble. There are even new trends for accessorizing your countertops, like vintage plate racks made to display your grandmother’s china. Hardware and metal finishes continue to push the envelope—think brass, nickel, and matte black. Removable wallpaper companies are making it even easier to experiment with pattern on walls and backsplashes. Consider 2021 as the year of the kitchen!
1 of 39
Kitchens with Curves
You’ve probably seen it trending in furniture design and we love how it is translated into this beautiful designed by Tiffany Leigh Design. Head over to her blog to read more about this space. It is packed with fun ideas!
2 of 39
Integrated Range Hood
Designer Stefani Stein created a seamless look in this kitchen where the range blends right in to the subway tile walls.
3 of 39
Colorful Kitchen Islands
Try painting your kitchen island a striking color like Alison Giese Interiors did on this project. We love how it stands out and contrasts the other white cabinets.
4 of 39
Bright Colored Cabinets
Because we all need a little more sunshine in our lives after 2020, am I right?! Pair them with a fun backsplash, and you will smile every time you walk into your happy kitchen!
5 of 39
Modern Black
As suggested by Semihandmade, “If you’re going for a trendy look, start with black cabinets and really commit to the modern approach by nixing those upper cabinets in favor of sleek natural wood open shelving.” Just like Yellow Brick Home did with this space, using cabinet doors by Semihandmade.
6 of 39
New Rustic
We know the rustic look has been around for a long time now, but if you pair it with a pop of fresh paint like Designer Hadley Wiggins-Marin did here, you can really and modernize redefine that rustic look.
7 of 39
Terra Cotta Tiles
When you think of terra cotta you probably have warm and earthy thoughts of potted plants and garden shops. Pair that material with soapstone countertops and classic brass hardware, and you have a unique yet traditional and beautiful kitchen. We love everything happening in this space, especially those terra cotta floors!
[external_link offset=1]
8 of 39
Marble Kitchen Countertops
Carrara marble like that shown here will always be in style, but if you’re a red wine drinker, quartz could be a much better fit for you and your kitchen. While it looks like a natural stone, engineered quartz is more affordable and less prone to stains.
SHOP WHITE SHELVES
9 of 39
Kitchen Larders
Originally a room in the home used for storing and preserving foods (think: the refrigerator before the refrigerator was invented), the kitchen larder has transformed into a stand-alone cupboard or pantry. They can be large enough to house the majority of your dry goods but small enough to keep things organized while taking up a minimal amount of valuable space. Forget a walk-in and sub in counter-top cabinet or add doors to enclose pre-existing shelving.
SHOP PANTRY STORAGE
10 of 39
Handmade Kitchen Tiles
Bring texture and nuance to your kitchen walls with handmade tiles. The possibilities are vast—try terra-cotta or cement in colors that range the rainbow—although we lean toward more neutral hues.
SHOP LIGHTING FIXTURES
11 of 39
The 5th Wall (The Kitchen Ceiling)
Don’t forget about your kitchen ceiling! Add a fun hit of color, wallpaper, or wood paneling to add dramatic flair to your space.
SHOP BLACK WALL PAINT
12 of 39
Reclaimed Wood Kitchen Cabinetry
If you’re installing custom cabinets, opt for a rough-hewn, reclaimed wood. And good news if you’re going pre-fab, companies such as IKEA are moving to more natural, eco-friendly materials for their kitchen cabinets. From bamboo to even recycled plastic bottles, cabinet companies are taking this revival of reduce and reuse very seriously.
SHOP KITCHEN STOOLS
13 of 39
Kitchen Wallpaper
While wallpaper has become less scary to the general population over the last five years or so, folks are still reluctant to hang it in the kitchen. If you’re scared about the permanency of wallpaper, try something less, well, permanent. There are plenty of peel-and-stick papers in trendy designs that are incredibly easy to install and remove. Hot tip: Opt for a graphic design that mimics the look of tile.
SHOP PEEL AND STICK WALLPAPER
14 of 39
Kitchen Plate Racks
Vintage plate racks are coming back in a big way in 2021. Whether displayed on countertops or mounted on walls, they add a ton of soul to a space and give you an actual place to store and display your dishware instead of hiding it away in a hutch or cupboard.
SHOP BLUE GINGHAM NAPKINS
15 of 39
Mix-and-Match Kitchen Metals
The year 2021 is not about being matchy-matchy—and that goes double for your heavy metals. Choose a nice nickel for your knobs and then go with a cool brass or matte white for your faucet. Choose a whole different metal for your lighting fixtures.
SHOP KITCHEN RUGS
16 of 39
Hidden Kitchen Appliances
Not a fan of stainless steel facades? Try adding fronts to your appliances that mimic your cabinetry. Refrigerators and dishwashers disappear when clad to match their cabinet cohorts. Even your massive oven hood can get in on the action.
SHOP KITCHEN STOOLS
17 of 39
Open Shelving
Open shelves allow you to showcase your beautiful kitchenwares among other heirlooms and antiques. The ability to see through your storage also means everything is easy to find. Just don’t forget to clean your items often since they will be open to the elements that might be floating through your kitchen. It’s also helpful to keep every day items on the lowest, most accessible shelf.
SHOP SHELVING
18 of 39
Standout Sinks
You don’t have to go nuts to achieve an on-trend kitchen. While an apron-front sink in a farmhouse kitchen isn’t exactly unexpected, a farmhouse sink in soapstone with brass hardware is a showstopper—especially when it’s set against white walls, wood cabinets, and stainless steel countertops.
[external_link offset=2]
SHOP BRASS HARDWARE
19 of 39
Natural Wood Tones in the Kitchen
While we’re still seeing stained and painted woods, we’re also seeing it in its natural state. Try adding a kitchen island—or just the topper—in a pretty, grainy wood. Brown wooden shelves that feel original to the house are another way to test the waters with wood. It will bring a warmth to any kitchen space, especially those trending bright white ones!
SHOP SWIVEL STOOLS
20 of 39
Tons of Texture
For those who fear color, focus on mixing up the finishes. Designer Cathy Chapman chose white beadboard on the ceiling and shiplap for the walls. She used unlacquered brass strap hinges and latches on the cabinets, black marble on the island countertop, and tons of warm woods on the floors, backsplash, and remaining countertops.

When you want to maintain neutrality but still have some fun in the kitchen, shoot for the stars—or in this case, the ceiling. Here, the Madcap Cottage team chose to paint the ceiling a Southern porch-inspired blue (Blue Ground by Farrow & Ball) and added an elaborate antique lantern.

Jackye in Charleston!
I have always loved Atlanta interior designer Jacquelynne aka Jackye Lanham’s style.  I love her use of fine antiques mixed with casual fabrics.  And I love how she displays antique accessory collections, especially the plates on the wall.   Jackye has always been a bit under the radar – there’s no coffee table book with all her designs in it, although I wish there was!  Hint, hint!!!    But, several of her projects have made a lasting effect on design, in my opinion
1992 - Southern Accents featured Jackye’s own beach house all in blue and white years before blue & white became so on trend, as it is today.  And look!  Shiplap – years before Joanna Gaines made shiplap so hip.
This magazine cover of a bedroom by Jackye became an instant classic.  Her fabulous set of intaglios was universally loved.
Jackyes house with her scalloped curtains and wonderful slips – filled with antiques and old portraits - was another much loved project of hers.
This cover showed a breakfast room by Jackye.  It has to be in the Top Ten Most Memorable covers of Southern Accents.
Everyone remembers this cover which showed a collection of brown and white transferware mixed with a bold check fabric.  To DIE for!!
Architectural Digest published this beach house in South Carolina with its pale slips and a striped dhurri.
This bedroom by Jackye had a painted Swedish antique chest – long before everyone started reproducing them.  LOVE!!!!
Everyone uses this tub…now.  Jackye used it years ago.
Her kitchens are some of her more beautiful rooms.  Here, these two brown shuttered cabinets look more like furniture.  I love the open shelving on the bank of cabinets at the left.
This beauty mixes a pewter collection with a pewter-look hood and pendants.  LOVE!!!!
A more recent design, this house by Jackye was in Atlanta Homes.  Notice how she treated the asymmetrical door – by balancing it with a chest and a print.  And love this – instead of a large coffee table, she used two garden seats.
A feminine living room in soft colors – her trademark.  I adore this room!!
Here, in another recent project, Jackye used antiques and a printed fabric, mixed with collections of old bottles and creamware – with touches of black.
At this year’s much lauded Southeastern Designer Showhouse and Gardens, Jackye received the high praise of being named Honorary Chair.  She and her assistant designed the foyer.
And there was also this.
Do you remember the story in Southern Accents – back in 2006 – about Jackye’s house in Charleston??
Jackye, based in Atlanta, would come to Charleston to shop for clients.  She and her husband fell in love, hard, with the city and they decided to look for a small house there to combine business with pleasure.  After a two day search, they found a three story original built in 1778 – small enough that they called it a pied a terre.   In 2006, Southern Accents featured the pied a terre and the pictorial made a lasting impression, judging from the number of pins taken from the story.
Recently, the Lanham’s Charleston house was put up for sale and I spotted it while perusing South Carolina real estate listings, a new favorite pastime of mine.   The house is notable for its original mantels, pine floor and cypress paneling.  Jackye had fully restored the house with new wiring, plumbing and HVAC, along with a new kitchen.  There is also a private garden ala Charleston.
The house was originally built for a cooper, or a barrel maker (what is that?!?!) and he used it as both his private home and the shop where he met with clients.
The tiny brick house is attached to a pink stucco beauty.  Notice the large stone step at the front door.  This is the door used by the original owner’s customers.  It was placed high off the sidewalk so that clients could enter right from their carriages.
Jackye added the curved brick wall to provide privacy to the garden and front door.  The front door is actually at the side of the house.
2006:  As seen in Southern Accents’ 2006 Christmas issue, the newly built curved privacy wall is not landscaped.  Nor is there the stone step at the front door.  Nor is there a window box.  Notice that today – the shutters on the front windows are closed for a reason you will see inside.
The long ago history of the house is posted out front.
The gate at the curved wall leads toward the front door and the private garden.
Behind the curved wall that Jackye installed is the side/front door.
And opened.
The front door opens to the center stairhall.  The kitchen/dining room is on the right and the living room is on the left.  Ahead is the powder room, down the half stairs.
The powder room.
The view from the stairs looking down at the foyer.  Jackye hung her large collection of antique prints and silhouettes on the paneled walls.
A glimpse into the living room from the entry hall.  Look familiar?
2006:  The pictorial was a Christmas story.  The living room as seen in Southern Accents.  Jackye used ticking for the curtains to make the 10’ ceilinged room seem less formal.  Ticking slips cover the sofa.  Her trademark antique trunks double as a coffee table.  Beautiful antique chandelier and mirror.
I remember this photoshoot so well.  It seems like yesterday, not over 11 years ago!
2006:  Across from the sofa are these two gorgeous leather chairs.  Not a pair, though.  The portrait is circa 1810!  LOVE!
2006:  Jackye bought this desk in Charleston.
Today:  The room looks almost exactly as it did, just a bit more lived in with books added.   The two French doors lead to the back garden.
Today:  The leather chairs.  This is what you call Patina!
Today:   The view from the living room to the dining/kitchen.
Today.   The French doors in the living room – lead out to the back garden.
Today.  The shutters are actually operational – and they can close off the doors.
The garden with the antique trough/fountain along the back wall.
Another view.
2006:  Across from the living room is the original shop from the 18th century, which is now the kitchen/dining room.  Here the chairs were slipped in a gray toile.
2006:  The galley kitchen.  I think I would have installed a small range instead of those stacked ovens which would make the counter all one height.  Remember the two shutters at the front windows which were open in 2006 and closed in 2017?   Here you can see the shutters are open behind the cabinets which lets in extra light.
2006:  By the door, the bar.
Today:  The kitchen.  Here you can see the original front door that opened to the former shop.  OK.  I don’t care for those rugs!!!   I”m sorry!!!    They seem a bit too busy here.  The slips on the chairs are different now.
Today:  The galley kitchen.  Perfect for a small vacation house.  But, still, a small range would take up so much less space and the counter would be longer.  And here, you can see that the shutters are now closed.
Another view of the updated slips.
Today:  You can really tell that someone loves to cook and eat in this family!
Today:  The view of the bar and into the living room.   The cabinets seen here are original to the house.   Such a cute house!!!
2006:  From Southern Accents, the stairs with all the art work.  Notice the risers are painted gray.
Today:  The second floor landing.  The master bathroom is seen down the landing.
2006:  The Southern Accents photoshoot in the master bedroom.
2006:  Southern Accents,  the chest across from the bed.  Gorgeous, antique mirror.
Today:   The master bedroom.  The original hearth on the fireplace is interesting – it is brick.
2006:  As seen in Southern Accents.  The master bath was created out of a room.
Today:  The bathroom was added to the small house.  Two armoires divide the dressing room from the tub room.
Today – looking at the vanity from the bath area.
Between the two armoires is the bath area where the original fireplace is located.
Today:  the marble shower.
The landing on the third floor – shows one of the guest rooms.
This guest room has another canopy bed with a chest and fireplace.
Today:  The two bedrooms on this floor each have sinks in their bedroom, as seen here.
A view of the sink vanity and the door with its original hardware.
The view of the landing up to the 4th floor loft and into the second guest room on the third floor.
The guest room and bathroom.
Today:  The guest room has it’s own fireplace with the brick hearth.
And it has its sink in the corner.
Today:  Lots of curtains.
BEFORE:  From Southern Accents, 2006.  The guest room was shown, with the antique hanging corner cabinet in focus.  Jackye said since the guest room had only a small bed, the curtains were more dramatic.
2006:  The nightstand got its own photo with part of Jackye’s salt glaze pitcher collection.
The 4th floor attic loft has room for more fun.  The rough floor boards were painted gray.
The laundry room doubles as another bathroom.
Laundry & bathroom.
The attic bedroom is not furnished.   Love the painted wood floors.  If needed, this room would make a great bunk room for grandkids or extra guests.
This darling house is for sale HERE for $1,795,000.
And like all the antiques Jackye has?  Many are now on sale:

The Kitchen
The day is FINALLY here. The kitchen is coming out. New cabinets arrive tomorrow and will be installed Wednesday and Thursday.
SO HAPPY!!
We have designed what we believe is the best use of space for the room we have. Kelly & I love to cook together. We have made many happy memories in our old house and on our travels together in the kitchen. Music on, wine poured, singing, dancing, feeding bites to LB as she runs through while we are cooking... all these things are important parts of who we are. Planning this room has been a labor of love and we can't wait to see how it all comes together.
Originally the cabin had a U-shaped kitchen, removed from the main living area. The original owner was a chef and he had a commercial grade cooktop and oven in the kitchen. It was huge (60" wide) with a commercial grade hood above. Over time the stove needed replacing and most recently a smaller (although still big) Viking range was added, with a smaller hood. It is gorgeous and I'm convinced it will make me a better cook. Since we have opened the kitchen up to the rest of the house by enclosing the dining room and removing the walls, we redesigned the kitchen to compliment the new space.
It is a complete remodel, top to bottom:
Stippled ceiling replaced with tongue and groove paneling.
Rough-hewn beams buffed to clean
Shiplap walls to cover original log and chinking.
New layout:
removing the peninsula
adding an island for the sink and dishwasher.
New lighting: can lights, pendants and under cabinet.
New floor: removing the 2" thick heart of pine planks that have lego sized gaps between them and black mildew and mold beneath and replacing with new brick tile.
Taking the fridge to the garage and bringing our stainless side-by-side from the old house.
New dishwasher.
Granite countertops.
All new cabinets & adding upper cabinets on both sides of the range.
We chose not to have open shelving although I love the way that looks. I just don't think I would love the way we would live with them. We can be messy. We compromised with a few glass doors on some of the upper cabinets.
The laundry room is just off the kitchen.  Our plan is to use it sort of as a scullery (butler’s pantry), a home for the microwave, dry good storage.  There is more to the laundry room story.
