TESS BECK + THE MULTIVERSE

Introduced as a one-off love interest for Peter Parker following his breakup with Mary Jane Watson, Tess Beck soon evolved into a fan favorite, with her backstory and investigative skills bringing in a unique demographic of comic books readers whenever she made an appearance.

The daughter of Quentin Beck and the mutant Beautiful Dreamer, Tess Beck is the best friend of Mary Jane Watson and long-time girlfriend and eventual wife of Harry Osborn. Briefly joining the rogues gallery under the alias Stasis, her popularity surged and the character has made several appearances in Spider-Man Adaptations.

Beck has been portrayed three separate times, although each with different names and varying origin stories. 

Her first appearance was in 2002′s Spiderman, directed by Sam Raimi as Theresa Beck. Played by Linda Cardellini, fans were ecstatic to see her character grace the big screen, her interactions with Bruce Campbell’s character leading many to speculate the latter was actually Mysterio. Raimi kept largely to the character’s comic canon, portraying Beck as a loner at Midtown High, whose jealously toward Mary Jane and sardonic humor eventually led to a relationship with Harry Osborn and her arc as the villain Stasis in Spiderman 3. Which was received poorly due to the lack of screen time and development given to the character as a whole.

The character later returned under a new name as Emma Beck--portrayed by breakout star Stella Maeve--in The Amazing Spiderman. An extroverted journalist who was speculated to have ties to Matt Murdock, Marc Webb intended for Emma Beck to have a much bigger storyline in The Amazing Spiderman 2, but unfortunately it had to be cut due to time constraints. Emma Beck was also intended to be the next love interest for Peter Parker in The Amazing Spiderman 3, replacing Mary Jane Watson after the death of Gwen Stacy. However, the sudden cancellation of the series promptly put an end to that plan. 

The most recent version of the character has appeared in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and Spiderman: Homecoming as the best friend of Michelle Jones (MJ) and a high school rival of Peter Parker’s. Prompted by the recent backlash following the cancellation of TASM3 and script leaks that ignited fan’s rage, Kevin Feige announced that Danielle Rose Russell would be playing the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that she would play an important role in the future of the franchise. Tessa Beck has been rumored to show up in Wandavision, in addition to her upcoming appearance in Spiderman: Far From Home, with many fans believing Beck will be the key to introducing mutants to the MCU.

Peter Parker was certain he was never ever going to love again. Okay, so maybe that was a bit dramatic. But when the love of your life dies before your eyes just a few months before you turn nineteen, that’s the kind of thing that stays with you. And Gwen Stacy was the love of his life. He was so sure of that. 

Until he meets Emma Beck in his Photography 101 class. 

The girl is witty, intelligent, and built with an eye for detail, which makes his decision to show up on her doorstep dressed as Spiderman after patrol one night, that much harder to rationalize. And then somehow things go from bad to worse when Emma starts finding ways to insert herself into his missions--if a bit unwittingly--she always adds. 

Finally Peter just decides to bite the bullet and share an apartment with her. Not only can he keep an eye on Emma in case anything happens, but it saves him money and provides a nice waypoint for his patrols around the city. 

The only thing he didn’t count on was discovering just how hard it was to hide the growing fondness for his new roommate, and how much harder it was to admit that what he felt went beyond just fondness.

11. Do either try to hide their emotions if upset? Can the other still tell?

Peter definitely does. Emma knows him too well for him to be able to hide his emotions completely, so the truth usually comes out one way or another. Emma doesn't necessarily hide her emotions so much as dance around them.

12. Do they have many heated arguments? How do they smooth things over?

The first year after Emma learns Peter's secret identity are filled with tons of heated arguments, especially about each other's safety. Most of the time they buy each other a pizza and rent a movie to watch as an apology.

13. Who’s the bigger tease?

Peter. I can't explain it, I just know.

14. How do their personalities compliment each other? How do they clash?

Both Peter and Emma are workaholics who throw themselves into whatever they're doing with everything they've got, both are super willing to get involved in the justice system but not through traditional means, both care about the people they love, I think they mostly clash in terms of how to deal with trauma and when the other calls them out.

15. Do they always say 'i love you' before leaving?

Once they're together? 100%. When they leave the apartment, when they hang up on the phone, when they pass each other in the street, when they part ways after dates, when they go on missions, they love to say "I love you".

16. Can they stay up all night just talking?

Yep. Especially about their respective hyperfixations. Peter talks endlessly about physics and science while Emma dazzles him with journalism facts and the newest story she's pursuing.

17. Who's more likely to pull the other in by the waist and kiss them passionately?

Peter. 100%. He pulls the same move he did with Gwen and literally webs her closer to him.

18. How likely are they to have fur babies? How many and what kind?

Once they officially move into a bigger apartment together, they definitely adopt like a medium sized dog or cat but it probably doesn't go much further than that.

19. How do they feel about PDA?

They're not super into a ton of PDA, but they love to hold hands and hug in public. Maybe a few cheek kisses.

20. Choose one song that perfectly describes their relationship.

I mean...It's Chemicals React by Aly and AJ. "You make me feel out of my element" "Both of us broken, caught in the moment" it's just perfect for them

Emma Jameson is not a hero. No one can be a hero every day of the week, her father always said, and boy was he right. Except it seems, about Spiderman. Sure, he’s not the most trustworthy when he’s hiding behind the mask, but considering all the good he’s done the city, she thinks her dad is exaggerating just a little too much when he calls him a “menace”.

So she decides to take the investigation into her own hands, the hero’s tracks leading her directly into the line of sight of Dr. Richard Connors at Oscorp, and suddenly Emma isn’t quite so sure that Spiderman is going to be there to save her when she’s staring down the impossible.

And she didn’t even get to tell Peter Parker she liked him. Yeah, Emma Jameson is definitely not the hero.

Just to be chaotic - Emma Beck and Harry Osborn from TASM

Listen...it's about the toxic vibes.

Is TASM Harry Osborn a murderer? Yes.

Did he kill one of Emma's closest friends and traumatize her future husband? Also yes.

Is he still one of Emma's oldest friends and would she still see in the good in him even after he'd become a goblin-man? Absolutely.

It's about that Friends to Enemies to Lovers excellence. And also the fact that I KNOW there would be Emmarry shippers if she were real. Not only because they love shipping crusty men with hot women, but also because in my comic canon they end up married and basically leading the Rogues Gallery at one point, so you know...I can see it.

It probably won't ever happen cause I love Spidemma too much, but I can see it and if I were a bit more unhinged, I would probably support it. (I did dabble in Harry/Gwen back in the day so who knows)
