Pokemon Card of the Day #3170: Shining Celebi (Neo Destiny)
There was a rather large number of Shining Pokemon released in Neo Destiny. This was also, for some reason, the last set to have them (until much more recently with different mechanics), despite only one other set featuring any of them at all. This first set of Shining Pokemon used very strange attack costs, making them actually rather hard to use. Shining Celebi could at least try to heal things or set Special Conditions, which was better than nothing, and honestly for Shining Pokemon standards just that probably qualified as above average.
50 HP was not winning any awards, and even something like Dark Feraligatr could get through this in one hit. The Fire Weakness let Magcargo and Blaine's Arcanine save on Energy. The one good stat here was that the Retreat Cost was only 1.
Healing Water required a Water Energy, but to be useful it needed more than that. It had you remove damage counters from 1 of your Benched Pokemon, and each Water Energy attached to Shining Celebi let you remove 1 counter. This was not going to impress anyone, since you needed several Water Energy to make this work well and you did not want to be trying to manually attach through it. It wasn't like you had explosive Water acceleration that worked with Celebi.
Miracle Leaf only did 10 damage for a Grass and a Psychic Energy, which was an awkward cost for something so weak. You did get to flip a coin for each Energy attached to the Defending Pokemon. If you even got 1 heads, you could choose Asleep, Confused, or Poisoned, and the Defending Pokemon was stuck with that condition. At least getting Poison on something could get more damage, while Confusion sometimes punished a lack of switching cards, making this the best Shining Celebi could do.
Shining Celebi was a really bad card that wasn't good at anything useful. It could set a Special Condition for a really weird price. That was about as good as it got here, and when your damage output outside of Poison chip was weaker than a Caterpie from the same era, maybe it was time to look elsewhere.

If the TPiaG characters ended up in a zombie apocalypse, who’s surviving and who got turned into a zombie first?
Twig gets turned first. 100%. The gal has made a career of taking hits for others, and she’d be no different in the apocalypse. First “death”, hands down, and she’d hide the bite while also trying to isolate herself so no one is around when she turns.
Kip would survive for a good while, and would end up leading a faction of survivors that the Guild are jointly included in.
Grovyle would stoop to levels he’s not proud of to survive. He’s done it before— he can do it again. He’d survive the third longest, after Lyra and Kip, before dying because he committed a bit too hard to the loner schtick and got himself in a bad situation— back against the wall, hordes closing in, that sort of thing.
The sableye would be picked off one by one, and Dusknoir would follow them shortly. They still talk to each other in half-realized sentences after being turned, dazedly trying to comfort each other in echoes of the words they heard before turning. It’s not fun for any onlookers.
Celebi cannot die, and is definitely traveling to happier times to cope. She acts like nothing ever happened, and everyone in the timeline she traveled to KNOWS something happened, but can’t figure out what.
Ark cannot die, and has retreated to Kip’s faction to wallow in his grief. He does what he can to help the bitten pass peacefully and without jeopardizing the rest of the faction.
Lyra, after she’s grown a fair bit older, would become a wandering hero who does good and helps those she can while thinning the herds of zombies as she goes, so to speak. She becomes frighteningly skilled and many wonder what motivated her to become a nomadic do-gooder. Say, didn’t she have parents before this all went down? Where’d those two go?

Ya'll like lizards? I do. This one is my favorite.
Let's be real. Grovyle probably had to sit a few days out just to get used to the past. He's a grass-type pokemon from a world without sunshine suddenly going to a world where the sun does in fact shine. When he arrived, he probably looked like some wilted houseplant that's been munched on by some bugs and hasn't been watered in ages. Dude went back to the past, experienced photosynthesis for the first time and probably panicked like "why Is my skin changing colors? why am I so energetic all of a sudden? why are more leaves sprouting all over my body?"
And then you figure, man's just walking around blatantly committing crimes and it's not until the Wigglytuff Guild finds out that anybody actually does something about it. I mean, I don't think I would be suspicious of some scrubby lizard walking around with a torn-apart bag with crude embroidery on parts of it.
Speaking about the bag... yeah, he's got the equivalent of a little kid bookbag; some terrible embroidering work done by Celebi (of course), a few sewn-together patches done up by his human partner, and you know I had to add the little Treeko/Grovyle head-shaped bag flap. I had to. He's got more accessories here and there but I'm not drawing all of that, thank you very much.
God, I wish Grovyle could've stayed in the past.

New Dadnoir headcanon just dropped; Come and get it!
There are generally two ideas for how Hero, a human, ended up in the dark future.
1. Humans existed in the world and went into hiding after a global catastrophe wiped most of them out. Hero was one of the few who survived to see the paralysed future.
2. Hero lived in a different world and was brought to PMD world somehow.
Let's say 2 is correct and that it was Dusknoir who brought Hero over. Dusknoir's dex entries talk about it "taking lost spirits ... and guiding them home."
While doing his duty, Dusknoir stumbled upon a lost soul, adrift in the space between worlds. Dusknoir took the soul to PMD world, and Hero was born, a happy young human child.
Dusknoir spent years raising Hero, but Temporal Tower collapsed. Dusknoir set out with Hero, spending years investigating the cause and trying to correct things. Throughout this time, Dusknoir could feel himself slowly being consumed by the darkness (as mentioned happening to others in special episode 5). Being someone who could move between worlds, Dusknoir's powers lent him some resistance to the darkness, allowing him to retain intelligence, though his mind was slowly twisted. His memories became foggy, unclear, and self-preservation became his only goal.
Just before he was fully lost, Dusknoir entrusted Hero with a terrible burden, "My child, I can't stay with you any longer. The rest is up to you. I know you can do it. When the sun shines, we will be together again. Never doubt, I love you dearly."
So, Hero left, continued to investigate, eventually meeting Celebi and Grovyle. Meanwhile, the last of Dusknoir's mind was lost, and he began hunting the trio. Before losing their memories, Hero was acting on Dusknoir's last wish, so they could watch the sunrise together again. Learning that restoring the past meant the disappearance of all future pokemon, it broke Hero's heart because they knew it meant Grovyle, Celebi, and Dusknoir would...
Then, the plot happens, Hero loses their memories, yadda yadda, but special episode 5; As Hero and Partner prevent Temporal Tower's collapse, Dusknoir begins to get his mind back and helps fight primal dialga. As the sun rises and Dusknoir begins to disappear, he begins to weep bitterly because he remembers his child and everything he did to them. Still, they succeeded, they did as he asked. He couldn't be more proud or more sorry.

It takes a while for Hornetstar to register the loss of daylight as she pads across the rocks. Or, perhaps it happens all of a sudden—all she knows is, she’s shivering now, staring up at the moon as a cloud passes over it. A piercing leafbare wind bites at her even through her thick fur, and she grimaces as she continues on.
A soft hooting noise makes her ears prick, and Hornetstar turns to the nearest snow-laden tree to see a large owl staring down at her. She peers at it for a few seconds, but it speaks no more, simply leering at her with its yellow eyes. Unsettled but finding nothing worthwhile to do about the situation, she turns away again, but finds herself crouching in terror as the owl suddenly swoops down, baring its talons and crying: “Join her!”
Although the owl doesn’t grab her, simply flying past her, Hornetstar breaks into a run as she heads back for the Cavern. What if it comes back? What if it was just taunting her before it makes the killing strike? What if this is how she goes? She’s on her last life …
As she goes, more eerie, un-feline voices rise up from the darkness around her: “Join her! Join her!”
“Join who?” she asks, a shrill yowl into the unforgiving night. “What are you talking about!?” She receives no answer, just the chanting of the prey surrounding her.
Heart pounding, Hornetstar finally reaches the Cavern, relief sweeping over her body as she approaches. She’s just about to step paw over the threshold when she feels sharp talons dig into her body. With a heart-stopping feeling of terror, she finds herself lifted into the air, and her claws slash at the air as she cries, “Let me go! Let me go!”
“Join her,” the owl says. Then, everything goes dark.
Hornetstar jolts awake in her nest, eyes wide, chest heaving. It takes her a few moments to gain her bearings, but she slowly registers the inside of her den and finally stops hyperventilating. Still, it’s been years since she had a nightmare like that … It sits heavy in her stomach as she stands up, stretches, and pads out of her den.
As Hornetstar settles down next to Marshlily, a rat in her jaws, the latter looks up and smiles. “Hi, Hornet,” she says through a bite of mouse. After swallowing, she peers at her and adds, “Are you okay? You look a little … rattled.”
There’s that look of concern in her eyes again, always present since she was worn down to her last life. On some level, Hornetstar is offended; deeper down, though, she knows she’s right to be scared. “It’s fine,” she lies. “Just woke up on the wrong side of the nest.”
“Mm-hmm.” Marshlily takes another bite of her mouse, then says, “I’m going to be going herb gathering later, if you’d like to come with. I’m sure some fresh air would do you some good.”
Hornetstar’s ears prick at the invitation. This must have been what her dream meant, right? Joining Marshlily on her patrol would keep her safe from something … somehow. “Of course,” she says, brightening up with relief. That sorted itself out quite nicely. “D’you wanna go right away after we finish?”
“Oh, uh, sure!” Marshlily says with a little smile. “It’ll be nice to spend time with you.”
“Yeah,” Hornetstar says, looking toward the mouth of the Cavern, “it’ll be really nice.”
There’s a bite in the air in the waking world as well, but the sun is shining overhead, and the rocks aren’t quite so cold beneath her paws; it’s a nice day out, all things considered. While she’s still not exactly certain how this could save her life or whatever, Hornetstar is certainly glad she came out. Through a mouthful of bitter leaves, she asks, “So, how have things been going with Celebi?”
Marshlily smiles at the mention of her mate, hiding behind her whiskers a little like a flustered apprentice talking about her crush. “Oh, things have been really good,” she answers. “And, um, actually … we’ve been trying for kits.”
Hornetstar’s eyes widen in excitement, and she’s nearly shouting when she says, “Ahh, Marshlily, that’s amazing! You’d be such a good mother!” Probably better than me, she remarks in her head, but doesn’t say it out loud, not wanting to ruin the moment.
With a humble chuckle, Marshlily says, “Well, let’s hope-”
Before she can finish, the smile drops from her face, and her eyes go wide, not with the delight that Hornetstar’s had but with a stark look of fear. “Hornet, watch out!”
Hornetstar whips around just in time to see a tree plummeting toward her, snow sliding off of it as it falls. Her brain says to run, but her muscles refuse to move, as if she’s made of stone. Her heartbeat pounds in her ears, and she can barely hear Marshlily’s voice over the rushing blood as she cries, “Run!”
But it’s too late—a thick, heavy branch crashes onto Hornetstar’s head, and everything goes black.
Even before she opens her eyes, Hornetstar knows she’s not in the living world anymore. She’s been here many times before, but as she lifts her head and looks around at the fields of Silverpelt, she knows that it’s her home now. Part of her is relieved—life was so often unkind to her; StarClan, she knows, will be much more bearable—but part of her is … She just died; how is she supposed to be happy about that?
She gives a slow, raspy sigh, then stands up and arches her back in a stretch. Anxiety begins to build in her stomach: shouldn’t someone be here to guide her around? How’s she supposed to know what to do? Where does she even …
“Horneststar?”
Hornetstar’s panic washes away as she turns to see Charredtail, standing there in front of her with an unreadable expression. She gasps, her face splitting into an overjoyed smile. “Charredtail! You’re here! You’re …”
She quiets, face falling, as Charredtail approaches, not at all matching the glee in her heart. Has he not forgiven her? Does he bear a grudge? She thought he’d understand, but of course he wouldn’t. Who would forgive their mate for killing them, haunted or not? Did he even grasp the scope of the-
Hornetstar starts as Charredtail digs his face into the long fur of her neck. “Oh, Hornetstar,” he says breathlessly, “I missed you so much—I just … I just …”
Hornetstar’s eyes begin to well up with tears, and before she realizes it, she’s sobbing and repeating, “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so …”
“I forgive you,” Charredtail says, bunting his forehead against Hornetstar’s before pulling away to look at her directly. “I mean … for the longest time, I didn’t. Even though I know you didn’t mean it, it was … it hurt, physically and emotionally. But in the end, I know you wouldn’t hurt me on purpose.”
“Of course it wasn’t on purpose,” Hornetstar says softly. “I would never. I missed you so much … we all did.” She pauses, then blinks as she realizes something. “Our kits …”
Charredtail’s face splits into a fond smile. “They’re waiting for us,” he says, gesturing with his head toward a forest a ways away. “Would you like me to walk you there?”
In the end, maybe death isn’t as scary as she thought it would be. She’ll miss her living loved ones—a pang strikes her in the chest as she thinks of Marshlily and Fireflash—but maybe this isn’t all that bad. “Yes,” she says. “Charredtail … take me home.”

Are there any other legendaries like Celebi that just likes to hang out and vibe with mortals?
Mew loves taking the appearance of mortals and walking among them— albeit with a condescending “awww look at the widdle commoners :3” sort of perspective.
Latias is shy, but will befriend anyone who maintains eye contact for 2.75 seconds, mortal and Legend alike.
Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, and Keldeo are a traveling band of do-gooders who defend defenseless mortals, but Terrakion and Keldeo are the two who enjoy interacting with said mortals the most.
Victini LOVES hanging out with mortals and is the type of immortal who befriends entire bloodlines because it’s hard not to love every addition to the family tree of that first mortal bestie.
Yveltal doesn’t have the best PR, but likes to hear stories from the lives of mortals, and holds a great deal of respect for them, even if he doesn’t get to interact with them much.
Diancie sees herself as a mortal, and is always happily interacting with her carbink subjects.
Zeraora and Raikou travel together across largely unpopulated areas, but they adore the time they spend amongst mortals, and will settle down in one spot for a while when they find a group they get along with especially well.
Pecharunt was raised by mortals and is obsessed with gaining the approval of mortals at large. It’s less that he chills with them and more that he can’t stand not having people like him, and has to make sure that he has everyone’s adoration at all times.
Ogerpon was raised by a mortal and sees herself as being more mortal than Legend. She lives amongst mortals at all times, though she will periodically flee her current home and don a new mask, afraid of someone realizing she never ages and concluding that she’s a Legend.
Necrozma has been incorporated into the local PTA after signing up his litten son for school and is realizing that there’s a lot of light shining out from within the souls of mortals. He quite likes the little things more than he ever expected to.
