Or you talk about the love umbrella where somebody erased Hanji name next to the love interest titan? so there are new official merch illlustrations for a popup in toshima with the theme of ennichi, which is tradition referring to days important to a particular deity so you would visit the temple which is now matsuri/festival in modern times. the site calls this "attack on titan ennichi", so i guess the deity we are worshipping is snk lol

though i'd seen this on sns a few times i guess i either hadn't really paid attention to it or some combination of my distance from the culture for a while and internal perception of hansi made it so i didn't realize at first, but after looking at the group photo i suddenly realized hansi is wearing male style obi.

yukata, the type of clothing worn to summer matsuri, is tied with a belt called obi. for women the belt is much taller and is wrapped higher on the body (with yukata usually hanhaba obi), and for men it's thinner, lower on the body and made of stiffer material (kaku obi). here's a stock image showcasing the difference

hansi is wearing the male style obi. this is such a surprise to me because hansi is usually completely excluded from collab merch which would gender them in some way to the extent i've seen some commentary from japanese fans about it, and the shingeki chuugakkou spinoff was committed to absolutely not depicting them in gendered clothing, only alluding to them being so at most.

it seems there has been plenty of merch where the characters are wearing traditionally gendered clothing such as yukata, for example here's mikasa and annie in their pretty yukata with female obi

and this appears to actually not be the first time hansi has been illustrated with a male style obi, however they've also been illustrated with the female style obi and ohashori lol (left side is not yukata, but other characters used gendered obi)

as you can see from the similarity between mikasa's yukata and the recent hansi one, the pattern on it is actually not very masculine, these bright colors and patterns are usually found in female style yukata.

but hansi's obi in the recent merch was enough to get many comments from japanese fans on social media, which is quite sad to read things such as "hansi is wearing the wrong obi", or how strange the style looks with the more female pattern to the male obi.

recently i've also seen some fan depictions of hansi somehow "not knowing" about gender, or not understanding it. their wearing the "wrong obi" is rationalized as them somehow accidentally choosing the wrong one or something. even in the anime adaptation of shingeki chuugakkou i regarded their outfit choice with discomfort because i did not know if this was something that came from a place of "this is something hansi wants to wear" or "this is what cis people think hansi would wear for reasons unrelated to their gender identity".

do we really think hansi, the most intelligent character in the entire story, is not intimately familiar with the gender associations of their behavior and dress preferences, for maybe having experienced the responses to them firsthand for their entire life?

these merch illustrations are nothing more than secondary material, though they do seem to follow some rules from the production team on things such as character color, they're obviously not canon. but it is unfortunate to me that hansi is not allowed even the slightest bit of gender nonconformity from a society that largely views them as female sexed. it is ridiculous to think in freedom of choice were hansi to wear male obi that they would be wearing it for any other reason than that they wanted to.
