How to Experience Shimla Like a Local from Your Villa
Without a doubt, Shimla is among the best places for any nature lover and those who simply would like to enjoy the thrilling experiences the town has to offer. It becomes a heaven for all the mountain lovers. If you are the one who dreams of coming back to primitive life at a corner of a secluded natural reserve to recharge your battery, I assure you that such a wonderful destination will not fail your expectations. Another factor that has made it popular is that it’s made up of beautiful terrains, attractive sceneries and has favorable weather in most parts thus enhancing its attractiveness to visitors. And by virtue of being booked into a well chosen Villa in Shimla can indeed be the difference between a run of the mill vacation and one’s money’s worth. This is a beginners’ guide to make the job less tiring, so that you get to enjoy your stay in the beautiful countryside.
1. Embrace the Morning Routine
Go to bed early and be up early enough to take a walk through the surrounding markets. Observe the people of this city and go through their daily routines and yes, you could grab a cup of Chai from a street side vendor if you wish.
2. Shop at Local Markets
Avoid going to crowded places like tourist spots and instead visit places like the Lakkar Bazaar. This is a place where you can purchase various kinds of handmade wooden items, fruits, and vegetables, and other local products.
3. Savor Authentic Cuisine
Instead of going out for meals at quasi gourmet or fine dining places prefer the simple restaurants. Restaurants such as Himachali Rasoi serve authentic dishes that one is likely to obtain a true feel of the place.
4. Engage with Locals
Engage in small talks with anyone you come across be it shop owners, drivers, and other locals within the area you are in. They are quite capable of coming up with recommendations or advice that might not be included in a guidebook of travel.
5. Explore Lesser-Known Trails
As for the most crowded areas, be sure to visit Jakhoo Temple, but do not overlook the less touristy routes such as the one to Summer Hill or Annandale.
6. Attend Local Events
Look for events and fairs that may occur in the locality while you are there. These events are perfect venues through which one can learn and appreciate the essence of the Shimla culture.
7. Use Public Transport
Transportation can be easily accessed with buses or with the so-called toy train that lets you feel the local vibe. These are cheap but effective means on how to move around and have a local feel of the city.
8. Stay at a Villa
Choose to rent a homestay in Shimla in a given area rather than a hotel. This is better than hotels since the settings are more natural and, at times, the hosts may offer suggestions.
Conclusion:
A Shimla villa experience is more than just a travel experience; it is a chance to connect with the destination and its people more deeply. Moreover, by relaxing at a slow tempo, involving the local people, trying real cuisine, imbuing yourself with culture, and checking out the trails off the main route, you'll discover the actual Shimla during your stay in Raman Villa. Thus, make sure that you have your bags packed, pull out all the nagging issues that are bothering you, and go all in for the best hometown feeling, hospitality, and authentic experience of the hills, for sure.

24th January 2019
Day dawned and I realised that the gurgling noises in the night confirmed that I’d eaten something that I shouldn’t have, a severe attack of “The Trots”!!! I couldn’t face breakfast so Joan went on her own, while I lay groaning in bed. I eventually got up in time to shower before the car arrived to take us to The Partition Museum, but I realised when I walked outside that I shouldn’t venture far from the loo. So while I went back to our room, Joan went off to visit The Partition Museum.
This is a museum dedicated to the story of how the British Raj arbitrarily drew a line that defined the border between India and Pakistan, without telling any of the people affected that they were now living in the wrong country. Millions of Muslim people were transferred from all over India to the newly created Pakistan and were allocated houses that Indian Hindu people had lived in for generations. This led to massive civil unrest and hundreds of thousands of people died as a consequence. It is still a bitter memory to this day for those affected. Another example of the British Government’s inept mishandling of such a sensitive problem. No photographs were allowed in the museum.
From the museum Joan then went on to visit a Hindu temple, the oldest in Amritsar, looked after by an old couple who were the priests. The temple was a fraction of the size of the Golden Temple that we’d visited the day before. It had paintings on the wall 150 years old and the temple itself was dedicated to Krishna. The old man gave Joan some banana which she felt she had to eat!! Fortunately there were no repercussions.
From there Orcan our guide took her round all the old streets where the locals shop and took her to the oldest shop, Gurdasram Jalebiwala, where he bought her some of the sweet delicacy they make there. Sugar and mustard oil? Apparently very tasty.
Afterwards Joan came back to the hotel and we had a bowl of medicinal soup, which had a fair bit of chilli in it, as my lips were tingling for a while after I’d finished. Joan then went off for a massage and came back feeling really refreshed.
We then got ready to go back to The Golden Temple to see it at night, under floodlight. It is supposed to look even grander when it is illuminated in this way. We arrived just as the sun was setting and went through the rigmarole of taking off shoes and socks, washing hands and feet, and putting on the blue bandana. The marble floors were very cold and a chill permeated up though your feet.
However, the view of the temple was even more spectacular, with the lights bringing out more of a warmer glow to the gold covering on the roof of the shine.
We went to visit the shrine this time and arrived in the middle of prayers and so had to sit cross-legged on the floor for about 20 minutes or so, before we were allowed to walk towards the shrine. The inner sanctum of the shrine was highly ornate, covered in gold leaf, with the holy book, the guru, on display in front of the priest. We climbed to the top of the shrine and looked out across the complex and the marble walkways and buildings with their golden minarets.
After a few sneaky photographs with the camera, only once was there a tap on my shoulder, we headed back to the hotel for a bite to eat and an early night, as we were leaving for Shimla tomorrow at 8 o’clock in the morning.
