If I had a nickel for every time I liked a game with orphaned brothers that fought, leaving the younger one a breath away from death, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

Story art for my latest fanfic, "The Dragons' Truce". The bros mean a lot to me and I wanted to write a better reunion for them.

When Hanzo was born he was a ridiculously sweet baby. Looked like something straight out of a 'cutest babies ever' list, never screamed even when he cried, had the cutest laugh ever that sounded like his mothers, always cuddly and loved hug naps. The baby lottery.
Sojiro got kinda confused why his family were so insistent babies were loud, horrible and stressful. He was actually starting to like this whole 'papa' thing. Another baby couldn't hurt, right?
Genji was all the ugly, snot nosed, screaming, hyperactive baby chaos Hanzo wasn't born with personified. Sojiro definitely regretted Genji for a while LMAO 💀 Especially when the damn kiddy leash couldn't come off without him bolting somewhere until he was like, 13...

I've said this before, but I'll say it again: Genji "stans" who are constantly harassing Hanzo fans/insulting anything positive about Hanzo need to just admit that they don't actually like Genji at all.
They don't like the Genji who wants to be free of hatred and bitterness. They don't like the Genji that acknowledges his own past failings. And they ESPECIALLY don't like the Genji that's forgiven Hanzo, wants him to forgive himself, and wants them to be a family again.
Toxic Genji "stans" HATE the actual, canon Genji. What they "stan" is their own spiteful and OOC imitation. A helpless little victim who needs to be "protected" from Hanzo, rather than an ex-yakuza and former black ops swordsman who's a grown ass man and can take care of himself.
I'm so done watching fandom clowns butcher Genji's character and then throw a hissy fit when other fans don't do the same.
Just admit that you're projecting too hard and take your lousy infantalized "Genji" somewhere else lol.

OK AU IDEA!
Very rushed I'm just writing this down because I came up with this 30 minutes ago and I have not thought it out very well and I'm too lazy to really double check my writing so probably a lot of grammatical errors in spelling errors or something I don't know lol
We know from one voice line from retribution between Genji and Reyes that talon tried to partner with the shimada clan but sojiro declined as they're view didnt aline.
Well what if he had agreed?
So Genji and Hanzo were raised in talon made to be not only shimada assassins but talon operative assassins so they were somehow even more brutal and inhumane than the shimada clan already was.
How Genji would end up joining OverWatch would be during an OverWatch mission to break into a talon base something goes wrong and one of them (Cass or Angela probably) can't make it back to the dropship or they're trapped or something, and genji knowing if talon finds out what he did they would kill him decides against his better judgment and decides to help the OverWatch agent he has no idea who they are.
And once he gets the agent back to the dropship Reagan's turns to him and offers him a place in OverWatch because he knows fine well talon/the shimada are going to have him killed for betraying them, and genji agrees. And eventually when they get back to base and after Reyes has finished convincing Morrison, once they start filling out his medical paperwork and a whole bunch of other stuff Reyes finds out that Genji is a cyborg.
And instead of becoming a cyborg once he was in OverWatch because his brother tried to kill him like normal, since he and Hanzo were raised in an even more violent and bloodthirsty environment they would often be made by each other and whoever lost would be punished either through extensive additional training, have something taken away that's the basic necessity, and eventually after those punishments weren't working and Genji was still losing to Hanzo, they started to replace parts. (Think like nebula and gamora from guardians of the galaxy) and since doomfist's family owns a cybernetics company it isn't too much of a stretch that they would have someone who could replace parts.
And the reason they were so easy with allowing an ex-talon operative to join OverWatch was because Baptiste had already joined at this point, and was the medic of black watch (moira is already gone at this point, they realized she didn't exactly have normal limits a lot faster). So they offered Genji a role in black watch alongside Cassidy, Baptiste, and sombra (because I want her to be here too). Since Genji already was wearing a mask when they met him, they didn't take it as very much of a surprise when he requested that his new black watch attire be armor and the helmet and you couldn't see his face or even eyes, they willingly obliged especially considering they allowed Cassidy to dress like a cowboy they couldn't exactly say no to the cyborg ninja to allow him to dress like a cyborg ninja, so his armor was made and it looks like his current armor but black watch color palette and instead of his normal hoodie and joggers he has black watch attire and looks more like he's on a black ops strike team. This black watch strike team would train alongside the OverWatch strike team and everyone even a lot of the black watch members at first the longest time thought Genji was an omnic because he never took off his armor in front of people except for Cassidy because they were roommates and Genji didn't sleep in the armor. The other black watch members found out a lot faster than the OverWatch team obviously from being around each other more but none of them ever talked about the fact Genji was actually a human so everyone still just assumed outside of black watch he was an omnic.
Also Genji's cybernetics look more along the lines of sojourns, where you can tell their cybernetics but they look more human than pure robotic. Also since he never went through a Playboy phase he starts off as more cold, aggressive, and quiet. But eventually when he starts warming up to everyone and learns that you can actually be a nice person and not constantly have to worry about someone trying to murder you or having to murder someone else he eventually shows off his more warm bubbly caring side to his personality.
Hanzo in this AU is still a part of talon but he is very internally conflicted because she does care about his brother in a weird way because even though he knows he calls them a lot of pain he still does care about him, and the fact he knows he calls him a lot of pain and creates a lot of inner turmoil in him that he is trying to push down but it's getting near a breaking point. And he is slowly becoming more and more uncertain of Talon's actions, with the final breaking point being when he almost kills his own brother during another OverWatch mission a couple years later and the shock of both realizing that his brother is alive, is on the other side, and that he almost killed him freaks him out to the point that he ends up running away from talon on his own. Not to join OverWatch at least not immediately he goes about by himself for a while trying to figure out reality and get a grip on what things are actually like because he is no idea because both of them had been brainwashed so much to the point they had no concept of what the real world is like.
Also probably kiriko would be a part of talon too as one of the assassins, and is probably the last of the three to leave because she has her mother still tying her there, and the anger of her believing that Genji and Hanzo just abandoned her when that is not what they were doing what was an accidental side product of what they were actually trying to do.
That's all I've got so far , again I did only come up with this like 30 minutes ago lol. feel free to add your own input!

Thinking about Genji begging Hanzo for his life is so heartbreaking. I mean yeah it makes sense that he did that but it's not something I immediately thought about. I totally get Mercy not being able to look at Hanzo for a while. Love the way you write them all btw
Thanks!!
Like, basically I have this ongoing motif/theme with the Shimada bros, and that's this memory of Sojiro saying "Make it clean, make it quick." And while I never wrote the confrontation between Hanzo and Genji itself, I basically make the point of taking every opportunity across my fic continuity to indicate that it wasn't that. Like the most detail Hanzo goes into it is speaking with Rei (amazing uncle moment) and he says "I unleashed the full fury of the dragons and left him to bleed out" (He skips over the part where the Shimada clan found him crying and throwing up in a parking garage after running out in a panic). And I kind of like turning that over in my head, that the Shimada clan is this family of trained killers, that they have this terrifying mental fortitude to take a life virtually on reflex, but all that training comes apart and collapses when it's one brother turning his blade on another. In a way it's crueler, because Hanzo basically left Genji to die a slower, more painful death, and he couldn't bring himself to, well to use phrasing in Zombieland, "Double-tap," but also Genji did cling to life long enough to be rescued, so you just have these kind of stacking psychological elements for both of them. That Genji's kind of faced with Hanzo's contempt at the end, that he wasn't even worth a clean and dignified death, and that Hanzo is faced with his grief and his shame and his weakness in making his brother suffer like that.
As for Mercy there is something to be said about Hanzo basically wandering the world with only the image of Genji in his head, and Mercy basically being confronted with the reality of what Genji was going through every day. And the fact that she had her family taken from her while Hanzo was basically placed in a position where he had to kill his family--theres a lot of opposition there! There is love for Genji but it's manifesting in very different ways!

Can I talk about how gentle Genji sounds in Overwatch 2 like he’s so calm and serene but also gently playful with the other characters in their interactions like he’s the chill friend who just wants what’s best for you but also cheering you on. Then there’s Hanzo who is trying to remain stoic but is actually like super high strung when someone is playful with him that it’s a bit sad even if funny. I need that beta interaction line back between these two about them taking the path to reconciliation because I’m very sure I didn’t dream it T o T

As a big fan of the Shimada bros and Kiriko, this is silly to argue about. Can't quite summon a dragon in real life except when you play Yu-Gi-Oh!, but in general it's all inspired by spirituality.
Japan has many shrines for offerings to various deities, like fox spirits and things of nature. Kiriko is a literal miko, a shrine maiden of Kanezaka - but also a ninja. The ability to climb walls is a Naruto rip-off, yes, but at least chakra isn't mentioned in the game. ("Believe it!")
Kiriko is an adorable, quirky character and I believe she's holding on to what's left of the Shimada clan together. She might just be someone's favorite who doesn't really like the DPS role, but who wishes to play someone like Hanzo or Genji and now they can. I will have to agree with some people wanting Asa-sensei in the game more than her daughter (cause using a sword as your primary weapon would be SO damn cool. I've always wished that Genji used his more.)
Hanzo and Genji deserve more character development, perhaps their own story mode, PVE Shimada Castle Showdown, Hanzo's got his sword and hair back, y'know? lol...
But I digress. This is still a fictional world with a talking gorilla and an Australian pyromaniac who never burns his hair off. Who knows what kind of "magic" that is? I hope we continue to enjoy such fun and interesting characters. 🐥❤
overwatch is a silly piece of shit on its best days but its continued insistence that magic is real but only in japan is especially hysterical

I was re-watching Genji reveal his face in the Dragons cinematic. I like to think that he smiles at Hanzo and dammit I wanna cry. 😭
I wish we could see him as he is now, the scars, everything he's been through. ❤
