Do you ship Neji with anyone?

Hehe. I answered this once but I'll definitely talk more on it. I love Shikamaru/Neji, and considering I published fic for them as recently as of 2021 those feelings are still going strong. Generally I prefer my ships to have a little more, er, content, but they captured my imagination so what can I say ...

If my followers will forgive me for getting indulgent for a spell, there's something very charming about how, in the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, Neji is keeping up with Shikamaru.

When they're trapped by Jirobo, Neji seems a little surprised by Shikamaru's false surrender, but keeps quiet. Now he's not a loudmouth like Kiba and Naruto, but he's also not shy about speaking his mind. However, between his own observational skills, a likely respect for the command structure, and Choji's words, he doesn't interfere. He's then right in step with Shikamaru and Choji when the plan starts.

Neji then explains that he observed everything Shikamaru did (that the prison recovered from Kiba's attacks at different rates) and why Shikamaru spoke to the enemy and so on. We expect Choji to work well with Shikamaru 'cause they're besties, but Neji was essentially a stranger to them and he's right there with them because he can get why Shikamaru does what Shikamaru does.

When they break free, Neji briefly assumes command to stop Kiba and Naruto from attacking while Shikamaru is busy thinking of another solution. Shikamaru names Neji his second-in-command -- and I know it didn't come up earlier because it wasn't relevant to the story, but in a more Watsonian perspective, it seems like Shikamaru should have done this at mission start. Neji is the shinobi with the most experience there. So did Shikamaru just assume they wouldn't have to split up or he wouldn't die (optimistic) or would he prefer to evaluate someone's leadership potential before trusting the lives of his buddies to them? I'm more inclined to believe the latter.

From all this we gather that they're both intelligent, observant people who quickly gain a mutual respect of each other when asked to work together. I happen to be a big fan of relationships between people who are both strong-willed and opinionated leader types. Yes, they can clash, but so long as they're respectful of each other there's so much potential for an interesting dynamic to explore.

They're also both lowkey people with compatible lowkey hobbies (cloud gazing & bird watching, napping & meditating) who I think could just relax together, though Neji's got a more active personality to keep some of that spark and spice. Neji needs some relaxation in his life ... Shikamaru can be very tender and emotionally intelligent if he feels like it, and Neji could use that too. What does Shikamaru need? Someone who is unafraid to challenge him, haha.

In fact, figuring out what Shikamaru wants (answer: a hardass with a nice smile) is easy because we see it in canon, but what about Neji? That, my friends, is a separate post I will make because I get very sidetracked from just gushing about my little rarepair.

hi there! could I please request some headcanons for shikaneji newly living together for the first time?

a/n: ohhh yes it's been so long since I've done anything shikaneji

tags: headcanons, fluff, living together, domestic vibes, suggestive themes and vibes but nothing explicit

characters: Shikamaru Naru, Neji Hyuga (paired together shikaneji)

I feel like they're one of those couples who starts living together accientally before they officially move in together.

It's the same thing with becoming a couple. They get together by going with the flow and a massive build up of strong emotions and feelings until they can't keep them in anymore and it just happens one night and keeps happening.

There's no official couple talk at first until they HAVE to bring it up out of fear of losing the other to someone else.

It's the same with moving in together.

It starts by wanting to just be around each other as much as possible. It's hard to balance a relationship between missions but it works for them because this is the life they want to live.

Shikamaru is the stable one in that he's got a set routine. He's in the village most of the time doing he's duties and it is a lot easier to pinpoint his location. He's pretty easy to find once you work out his hide away spots too—a piece of cake for someone with the byakugan.

Neji is the wild card. He's sent away on missions that vary in location and duration. That means he's the one who is seeking out Shikamaru. Which also means they usually end up back at Shikamaru's place.

Now that Neji knows an existence outside the suffocating air of his clan he looks for any excuse to spend evenings away from there. It's like learning to breathe again, spending nights away with Shikamaru.

Sometimes he returns from missions in the middle of the night and he'll just head straight to Shikamaru's and climb into bed with him. Shikamaru never questions it either, just snorts and shuffles over like he's been waiting for him the whole time.

Other times Shikamaru will roll him over, pull his clothes off and make him forget there was ever a time before, a time before they created a little home together in their hearts.

It gets to a point where Neji barely goes home. Most of his clothes are mixed in with Shikamaru's. He eats there, sleeps there and spends all his free time when he's not out or in the village there. It's practically like they both live there.

It's solidified one day when Shikamaru is lying on the veranda, arms behind is head when suddenly says, 'It's getting colder.'

Neji hums in agreement, as he sits drinking his tea a few feet from him.

'So we should get a kotatsu table for our place.'

Neji almost chokes on his tea at the last few words. Shikamaru has always gone with the flow and fallen into things like feelings a lot more easily than he has but this? Declaring it is their house? That is something else.

'You alright over there?' Shikamaru asks without moving.

Neji clears his throat. 'Yes.' He shakes it off. 'A kotatsu table? I have one.'

'Perfect, I'll help you bring it over with the rest of your stuff tomorrow then.' He can hear Shikamaru's smirk from where he sat. 'It's about time right?'

'Right.' Neji tries to fight back the smile. He feels so warm inside.

Not a lot changes in their routine once they do start living together but they do become even closer. It's like they've cemented the fact they're together again like 'Yeah, you're my person.'

In truth there isn't even a lot for Neji to move in because most of his stuff is there. So once they're done something just comes over Shikamaru and he HAS to have Neji right there and then.

Most of the day is less about moving and more about intimacy. They go at it most of the day. And if they aren't doing it they're just kind of lying there having pillow talk and being vulnerable because 'shit we are officially living together now', no skirting around it kind of living together it's OFFICIAL and oop now they're doing it again.

In terms of what they're like together.

Neji is the one who is a spotless cleaner and a decent cook. Cooks more fish dishes and leaner meat dishes—healthier balanced meals that every shinobi needs. Loves tea! Always has a bunch on hand. Likes his baths. Not a fan of clutter but can deal with a little from others.

Shikamaru is somewhat tidy but he's too tired to keep things spotless and he doesn't see the point. He has a laundry pile on the chair he fixes every couple days (it used to be on the floor until he got scolded by his lover so he moved it to the chair—it's an improvement lol). Likes bathing with Neji but if he's not home he'll have quick showers.

Opts for balanced meals doesn't care about super healthy as long as it's tasty and everythings there. Loves meat and snacking. Sometimes leaves the dishes until the next day or two (feels guilty when he sees Neji doing them bc that man cannot stand dirty dishes in the sink lmao)

Neji grew up in an environment where everything had to be neat and presentable so Shikamaru tries to convince him that the bed doesn't need to be made. Neji promptly calls him an animal while shaking the blanket up and straightening it out maticulously. Shikamaru thinks its hot how he does that.

I mentioned the bathing together. They bathe and shower together as some intimacy time but also general prep/aftercare. Shikamaru also just loves unwinding at the end of the day with Neji this way. It's very relaxing and he can make him blush VERY easily.

The kotatsu also ended up being an excellent idea! They can snuggle together while Shikamaru has coffee and Neji has tea. Shikamaru naps there in the cooler months. Neji loves relaxing there knowing he brought in something useful to THEIR home.

Neji also brings some low maintenance plants to brighten up the place so Shikamaru doesn't accidentally kill them while he's away. Because he absolutley does forget to water them sometimes and he panics. It's okay Neji predicted this. Also bought some herb plants which he asks Hinata to check in on whenever he's away lol.

All in all they have a good balance and dynamic that only strengthens when they start living together.

Hmmm noticed neji is only ever written with the way other anons have described some hcs being in x reader content more so aiming towards woman readers. Which makes sense. People are writing out their fantasies about fictional men that i can get i get but some hcs... do make me question how people can come to such conclusion about his character,

Like where is the whole mean depraved dad dom energy coming from it's obvious projection. I do mind my business it's not my thing or i go to read something where he's in character but it kinda does annoy me when yeah like the other anon said. Treat the fanon as canon or i've seen people force their headcanons onto to others which is not okay. What i also noticed he is not like this in ships again only x reader sometimes its bizarre for me to see his character being wrapped changed.

And then i read a fic of him and shikamaru or tenten for example and it feels like im actually reading his canon version. Also what the other anon said he would def ask for consent on anything people write him doing things just out of the blue and im like????? Uhhhh yeah its a fic but also assault cause just.. no i personally just curate my space block see the headcanon i want to see only following certain people or write my own that's what i have been doing with an oc i created a while ago with him. Best advice block and do what makes you happy anon works for me so far lol

Blocking and muting tags + fics/authors really just be your best bet with curating your space.... best form of self care with your character indulgence right there! Especially grand way to avoid those mischaracterizations you may come across,,,,, I would know-

But really like I think you said, y/n or x reader fics tend to be more self indulgent types of fics (at least in my own personal opinion) and really are where people write out their fantasies or personal interpretations for how characters may act in certain scenerios. And I don't say that to be condescending or bash on anyone, it's your fic and self indulgence is a good thing! It's how people wanna enjoy themselves and their time and I do appreciate that aspect of it.

Though I do agree with you on the annoyance when it comes to people treating fanon as canon material or go out of their way to shove those headcanons down people's throats. It's a good way to suck the joy out of something for someone or to just simply piss people off, that's never fun for anyone.

The differences between those and canon character ship fics? I think the difference there lies with people maybe more wanting to build upon or explore dynamics between two established characters, so I can see there why characterization would be more in line with canon there (I will say though in the same way not every x reader fic mischaracterizes, not every canon character ship fic is completely in character either. I've read some that seemed self indulgent as well, and quite a few mischaracterizations for my faves have been from these kinds of fics-. Then again I'm also hella picky with fics and don't really read too many beyond ones I've already read, ehehe-)

I really honestly think it depends on the fic/author at this point. Hit or miss sort of deal. Really like you mentioned already though, the fic space I think is just something you gotta curate: avoiding hcs and interpretations you don't like + scrolling past or blocking and muting are really all you can do! Better than harassing anyone. BUT this isn't to dismiss your frustrations with mischaracterizations!!! Believe me, I know all to well of the pain with running into Neji, Naruto, or nejinaru mischaracterizations sm! I will be the first to hold ur hand and tell you I get it,,,,, I hear you sm.

(I will be completely be honest with you anon, I.... am not a multishipper with Neji and don't really like shikaneji or nejiten so I have NO knowledge on how in character those fics are, whoops)

Summary: A modern verse where puppy love has consequences, and a prequel to something somehow more wholesome and darker.

No one was allowed to call Hyuuga Neji a slut. Especially not Uchiha fucking Sasuke. Everything sexual he had ever done, he had done with and for Sasuke. That was why he slapped his boyfriend of four months with a righteous fury.

Four months had been enough time to turn an innocent attempt at a first relationship for two very young teenagers into a toxic heap of adult issues. Sasuke was a slingshot of opposing abandonment issues. He so desperately wanted Neji to love him, to choose him over anyone who would take him from him, but he also had the uncontrollable subconscious urge to push him away before he could choose to leave him. That meant he was always clinging to him and simultaneously pushing him away.

Neji had whiplash. Every time they met, he was being pressured into something new, something beyond his emotional and physical boundaries, to prove his love for Sasuke. If he refused, or even resisted, he was accused of being with him for his estranged brother, who was the source of Sasuke's issues and who Neji idolized. This time, Sasuke had gone further and accused him of getting sexual satisfaction from someone else, probably Itachi, even though Neji had never met Itachi. Hence why Sasuke had called him a slut.

"I don't want to do it with anybody, you idiot!" he shouted.

Sasuke cradled his wounded cheek, but he glared hatred at Neji so he wouldn't appear weak. "Liar! I know you're getting fucked behind my back!"

Neji resisted slapping him again. "I'm a virgin! You were my first for everything, Sasuke!" He really had been, and that meant something to Neji. His conservative upbringing put Sasuke up on a pedestal as the person he had sacrificed so much of his body for. Even if he had been reluctant to do so almost every time. "You'll be the first to do...that to me too..."

That seemed to calm the Uchiha. "Then why not this?"

It was always the same question, and Neji never had a good enough answer for it. If he told Sasuke he wasn't ready, Sasuke would claim he would be ready for Itachi, and the argument would go back around to the beginning. There was only one way to stop it. "Fine..." Sinking down to his knees, Neji mentally prepared himself for the sacrifice he was about to make. He felt dirty. He felt degraded. He felt like crying. It was worse than when Sasuke had convinced him to give him a handjob in a bathroom stall at school. At least they weren't in public this time.

When it was done, he spat what was left in his mouth into the bathroom sink, then washed his face with generic hand soap. It would dry him out, but it was the only antibacterial soap in the bathroom, and Neji felt extra filthy. He was checking his hair for cum when he heard the telltale signs of Sasuke's parents returning home. That was when he noticed his fuller pout and the red lining his eyes. He looked like he had been sucking dick and crying about it. As if he would be exposed if he stayed, he left in a hurry, without telling anyone goodbye.

The next day at school, there was a new rumor in rotation, that Sasuke had been given oral sex. All of the girls in the school were telling their friends how much they were willing to do to have him. Neji wasn't upset that Sasuke had told someone, because his name wasn't part of the rumors, but he was shaken by the willingness of his peers to do what he had only reluctantly done. It was his first realization that he was supposed to want to do the things he had done for Sasuke.

But he didn't.

In the same stall Sasuke had pressured him into giving him that handjob, he made the decision to block the Uchiha's phone number and social medias. Whatever came of it, he didn't care, as long as he wasn't pressured into making himself feel like a slut.

Only two people were allowed to call Hyuuga Neji a slut, and they only had that privilege as his official and unofficial boyfriends, unbeknownst to them. They could call him whatever they wanted when they were inside of him, because he felt safe in their hands. A little dirty talk had never offended him. Besides, neither of them actually believed he was a slut. Neither of them knew.

It had taken one Nara Shikamaru to tempt Neji to explore his sexuality again. He hadn't really done anything, just been a safe place for him to fall once he had freed himself from his ex-boyfriend's abuse. For that, Neji had given him everything, from his previously violated mouth to his virgin hole. He was so free with his body around him that the Nara's father was lucky he had only caught them having intercrural in the yard. Since then, they had done so much more.

Neji's relationship with Shikamaru was a secret, and that was why Itachi didn't know about him. Well, that, and because Neji had never told him about him. Itachi was Neji's unofficial boyfriend, the man who refused to acknowledge their relationship, even though he had opened up to Neji more than his own partner in the gang he was part of. Neji had finally met his fellow prodigy while buying Adderall IR off a local "poisons" peddler, Sasori. Neji was aiming for Itachi's GPA at graduation, and stimulants were a major help. The former golden child was now a bad boy who partook in the occasional illicit drug, which had led to their first time together. In an ecstasy-induced moment of honesty, Neji had murmured into his ear, "I would do anything for you..." and Itachi had carried him up to a bedroom to prove it. Neji had proven it. Several times. He was an open pair of beautifully toned thighs for Itachi. And no one knew outside of the Akatsuki and a few of their clients.

Sasuke had grown into a monster. Because of Itachi, he had fallen into the wrong crowd, a group of teenaged bad boys and girls who spent way too much time with a middle-aged man and his pet snakes. In the Akatsuki hideout, which was supposed to be neutral territory so people could buy their drugs without issue, he was able to verbalize his hatred and resentment to Itachi. Itachi never responded. When he noticed Neji hanging around, though, he realized he had a new target he could get a response out of. Since the Hyuuga could often be found in Itachi's lap, he had chosen to bring an old accusation back and had told Neji he had been right about him, that he was a slut.

"I wish I listened to you sooner. I love being a slut for your brother," Neji shot back, his words seductive, almost moaned.

Since violence was his only desire, Sasuke just went silent and completed his transaction, while Neji tauntingly rolled his hips against his brother's groin. Because he knew any threat would be met with exposed weaponry and a sharp warning, once he had his friends' supplies, he avoided looking at his brother and his ex and left. His eyes were spared the sight of his brother's hand squeezing Neji's inner thigh.

In reality, Sasuke had no idea. Itachi had no idea. Shikamaru had no idea. Sasuke had taken something from him in his youth that Neji had taken back and then some. His power. His sexuality. His two boyfriends weren't his only lovers. With enough alcohol in his system or a strong enough drug, he would show anyone who was hot enough a good time. Hell, Kiba was still texting him short poems after their drunken fling. (A surprising talent for the dog boy.) Neji loved how powerful he felt when he seduced someone. He loved how easily men fell for a tight, eager body. He loved how no one dared to called him a slut for fear of losing their chance with him. He loved being a slut.

i never shut up about this but i think there was probably a significant bit of time where neji semi-idolized itachi after he learned about the massacre. i don’t think it’s impossible that neji heard the story of one of the heirs to konoha’s second biggest clan killing that entire clan and like, identifying/projecting onto itachi and being like “woahhh he’s just like me” and kind of idolizing him for, in his eyes, standing up to the clans and freeing himself in a way. i think he grew out of it but there was probably a time right after his father’s death where he really idolized itachi..

What are your thoughts on ShikaNeji.

I technically have a whole HC for them. Okay so hear me out ...

Neji is actually very shy and Jealous and has no clue whatsoever on how to tell Shikamaru how he feels since his father didn't live long enough to help him through it and Hiashi tried having the talk with him but things got akward.

Anyways... Shikamaru doesn't like relationships because in his opinion it's to much of a "drag" to attempt to understand men or women. But Neji intrigues him but so does Temari

Everytime Temari comes to the village Neji get's sad and depressy because he knows that Shikamaru likes her so he just stands by. Anyways soon Neji talks to Tenten about it and has no clue that Shikamaru was there to hear it.

Shikamaru then finally takes Neji out and shows him the love and affection he missed out on and Neji makes sure Shikamaru doesn't get in his head to much.

Ughhh like on god I just love how Neji can keep up with Shikamaru's brain without him having to explain it and the respect they have for one another in the will of fire movie when Neji just listens to him. Sorry for rambling I just love the dynamic.
