#shigeo is so polite in the anime

this. also:
i keep forgetting how good the voice acting is in english (because i rarely watch the dub *cries*. i can't practice japanese listening with it). this moment is just as good in the original japanese; shigeo is surprisingly polite here:
モブ:「逃げて!みんな、逃げて!」
霊幻:「モブ! 」
エクボ:「生きてたか!」
モブ:「あの人は力を出し過ぎて自滅しました!」 自滅(する)〖じめつ〗 self-destruction. kanji here are literal AF: 'self' + 'destroy'.
霊幻:「大出血じゃねえか!」 出血(する)〖しゅっけつ〗 bleeding, haemorrhaging; the component kanji here are also very literal ('exit, come out' + 'blood'). the 大 (だい) prefix emphasizes just how much shigeo's bleeding here.
モブ:「師匠。逃げてください!」
I think this is my #1 favorite Reigen moment of all time.
The exchange, albeit short, is so perfectly reminiscent of their characters. The way Mob was very clearly fleeing from a giant wall of explosive energy that’s approaching them extremely quickly screaming, “RUN!!!! RUN AWAY!!!!!!” but Reigen wasn’t even really listening to him until Mob used his angry teacher voice because he was too distracted by whether or not Mob was okay.
*voice cracking* “IT’S MOB!!!! LOOK!!!!”
“He ended up releasing too much energy and self-destructed—“
*very clearly not paying attention* “YOU’RE BLEEDING LIKE CRAZY!!!”
“MASTER. YOU NEED TO RUN.”
It’s very funny and also very cute. An entire explosion is about to go off a half-mile away in T-minus 9 seconds and Reigen is like “oh my fucjing god your arm. it’s bleeding.” Like YEAH. BUT MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY:

HI so sorry to barge in here unannounced like this but u seem to have a lot more knowledge about japanese language/culture/social etiquette than i do and i've seen u mention dimple's mannerisms in canon once or twice and like . i'd love to hear more abt that if ur willing to ramble for a bit. i've been Very curious just how far dimple's Rudeness goes, but i know very little about the culture. i'm sure some things he does or says seem fairly normal to me but is considered very rude or disrespectful to the characters. no pressure tho ofc :]
hi Rika!! literally drop in anytime! I,, I appreciate this ask so much and will answer as best as I can, but I'm a very new student of Japanese and Japanese culture, so take what I say with a grain of salt! also I personally am going to tag @russenoire to respectfully invite them to partake in this conversation if they think it would be fun (no pressure of course!). they have been studying this much longer than I have :}
putting my thoughts under a cut because !!! I love to ramble!!! note: all of this is based on Dimple's Japanese voice & mannerisms from the anime. I don't have the manga in Japanese yet 🙏
As a preface: Ekubo's direct/rude/familiar speech style is typical in anime and not unheard-of in real life, but it's definitely worth noticing! Mob Psycho 100, particularly, gets a lot of its unique interest out of taking unrealistic anime expectations and saying "HEY pay attention to this, WHY is this happening, this is immature behavior, why are adults in this universe letting this happen", and making it funny and/or serious. So!!! let's dive in.
So, okay, Dimple's mannerisms. The first thing to know is very general. he usually speaks in the casual register (which has a whole distinct vocabulary from the more polite registers: for instance, he tends to end his sentences with "da" rather than "desu", which are both "is" verbs with the exact same meaning, just a different connotation). the casual register is comparatively... direct. Dimple using casual implies that he thinks of himself as on familiar terms with and/or higher in the social hierarchy than whoever he's speaking to. casual Japanese is par for the course in anime in general, especially for people expressing arrogance, like Ekubo does all the time. But still, that's A Choice. it expresses simultaneous superiority (I am allowed to speak to you in informal terms because I'm above you) and also, possibly, desire for closeness (Ekubo speaks to Shigeo in familiar terms like they're brothers).
(Politeness, respect, and distance are linked in Japanese. Casual language isn't always rude, but in the wrong situation, it can be jarring and disrespectful. Using casual Japanese is a sign of confidence and personal closeness in your relationship with someone—new friends will switch from formal to casual language at some point and typically never go back; siblings use casual language with each other as a matter of course. It's very situational.)
The second thing to know is, there are choices of first person pronouns in Japanese!!! And Ekubo's choice is spectacular. He refers to himself as "ore-sama". "ore" (roughly pronounced "o-ray") is one of two typical Japanese casual male pronouns, ore and boku. (the formal first-person pronoun for men is watashi). To my knowledge, "ore" was originally the only casual male pronoun, and then "boku" entered popular use as a more humble option and changed the meaning of the formerly more neutral-sounding "ore" by competing with it, which is fascinating. but I'm getting distracted. "ore" is the more aggressively masculine pronoun; it's considered rough/direct to the point of being rude in many contexts. And Ekubo doesn't just use "ore" (ore is a widely-used choice!), he adds the honorific -sama to the end. This is extremely macho. SUPER arrogant. It tracks with his desire to become a god: -sama is the honorific for kami as well as the honorific for people who are way higher ranked than you. giving someone the honorific -sama expresses a greater gap between you and them than -san does. this is hilarious to me. Dimple is over here referring to himself as 🔥 ME 👑 every time he uses first-person pronouns. (Mob uses boku, btw.) ore-sama isn't not used irl, but it's, uh. highly highly unusual, from what I can tell. sounds like a biker gang boss kind of thing to me—something someone on the fringes of society would use. no shade to those outside "polite society" from me, btw, I'm just stating the general connotation from a majority cultural perspective.
OH AND SPEAKING OF HONORIFICS. I'm guessing you've seen analysis of this before and/or just Get It from cultural osmosis, but Dimple calls Shigeo "Shige-chan" the second time they meet. -chan is a usually-affectionate diminutive usually given to girls younger than yourself or celebrities people find cute; I think they translate it as "li'l Shige" in the English dub? -chan has cutesy connotations and can be infantilizing if it's not used with permission and/or some kind of... y'know... familiarity and understanding between the person giving the honorific and the person being referred to with -chan. it is super disrespectful of Dimple to call Shigeo Shige-chan having just met him, and having gotten off on a terrible foot with Shigeo, no less. what the heck, Ekubo!!
And then Dimple proceeds to call him just Shigeo with no honorific at all, which is ALSO disrespectful?? given that Dimple doesn't know him, really?? too familiar, too abrupt! As a strange adult, he should be calling him Shigeo-kun! But he's treating Mob like a little brother. (For instance, as the older brother, Shigeo has the right to call Ritsu by the first name and only the first name, whereas Ritsu usually calls Shigeo "Nii-san". To my knowledge, that's not unnatural in Japanese the way it would be in English; it's not Ritsu reiterating their bond every five seconds, it's just the Expected Thing for the younger brother to refer to the older brother as "Nii-san" out of respect. you'll see the Shiratori brothers, Daichi and Kaito, doing the same thing if you pay attention. to each other, they are "Kaito" and "Nii-san". BUT ANYWAY)
Another Dimple regularly does that reads as arrogant/direct to me is sometimes speaking in a Really Low Voice. This is where my knowledge gets hazy—it's more about pronunciation and accent than "behavior" as such, so bear with me, but the general pitch of one's voice is important in Japanese. Girls and women tend to pitch their voices higher than their natural range in Japanese, especially when doing "polite" or "customer service voice". Japanese speaking men often raise their pitches for politeness/to express humility or a conciliatory attitude too, even though it's not as extreme as with women. And men who are performing aggression will often lower their pitch on purpose, creating a growling kind of effect. Dimple does this a lot. Let me see if I can embed a video of him doing it here
YES. OKAY. Listen to the difference between his mental voice and his spoken voice here!! Dimple uses a higher pitch when talking to Mob because he's trying to ingratiate himself with Mob, but then when he's muttering to himself, he reverts back to his evil-spirit, gang-boss, stereotypically-yakuza-sounding kind of... deep growl.
Relatedly, Ekubo rolls his r's. he rolls them hard. That's a really rough way of speaking, definitely not typical in "polite" Japanese. people learning Japanese are told not to roll their r's unless they want to sound like they're yakuza wannabes. (He also, to my ear, tends to kind of roll his vowels?? he puts his voice backwards in his mouth, pronouncing things either near his nose or deep in his throat, and kind of crushes them with his mouth as they emerge. I don't know if there's a word for this, but to my synesthesia it looks like his voice goes spiky. it's a COMPLETELY different sound than the smooth pronunciation of polite Tokyo-style Japanese. I don't actually have a point this is just interesting to me)
That's about all I have for now! I'm fascinated by Dimple's speaking style and what it says about him. Sorry this was more about accent than behavior—as far as behavior goes, I mean, he's weird. he's weird! as a ghost, he's not really a part of society and he just wanders around making fun of people, which would be rude in any culture. I have a whole Other rant about how Dimple improved as a person after Reigen started treating him as an employee and how that adds to MP100's theme of society and connection, but now is not the time. I hope this has been interesting to you!! Thank you for the ask!

this is the best post of all time
okay I've finished making my big spreadsheet of how mp100 characters refer to each other! some thoughts on this under the cut because it got long
the Kageyama brothers are very polite in how they refer to people. their parents must have really instilled etiquette into them bc no one else is as consistent about using polite honorifics/titles as they are. the only people Mob doesn't give an honorific/title are his brother and Dimple, and the only people Ritsu doesn't give an honorific are Dimple and Shou, who he just calls "Suzuki"
Reigen, on the other hand, is pretty inconsistent and casual with his use of honorifics. he says "Mob-kun" a couple times and "Ritsu-kun" once, but usually they're just Mob and Ritsu (or "Mob's brother" lmao). the only honorific he consistently uses is "Tome-chan"
it's infrequent, but both Reigen and Dimple refer to Mob as "my boy" at some point :') he's their boy!
Ritsu doesn't refer to the Awakening Lab kids at all until he asks their names after being kidnapped lmao the only exception is when he calls out to the older Shiratori brother after the younger one is taken away and he calls him "Shiratori-kun." considering the fact that after asking their names, he refers to both of them as Daichi-kun and Kaito-kun, I think there was absolutely a moment when everyone was freaking out about the Shiratori brothers where he was like "ohhhhh that's his name"
also he switches from "Onigawara-san" to "Onigawara-senpai" when he realizes he's friends with his brother lmao fakeass
even though Mob starts calling Teru "Hanazawa-kun" as soon as they exchange names, Teru doesn't give him the honorific until they decide to raid Claw together. I guess that's the point when he decides they're friendly enough for it? he calls Ritsu "brother-kun" as soon as he realizes they're related and never refers to him by his actual name
everyone calls Teru some variation on his nickname EXCEPT Mob and Dimple. Dimple actually only calls him "brat" and "that guy" for a while until he managed to track him down again during the alleyway incident, which I realized is because he was exorcised before learning Teru's name lskdjflkdsf from the Seventh Division arc onwards, he just calls him "Hanazawa"
I love that Dimple tries to refer to the brothers with cutesy nicknames and both of them are like "if you do that again I'm killing you all the way dead" and he's like "understood." and then refers to them by given name from then on lmao
Teru refers to Dimple as "Dimple-kun" and Tome calls him "Dimple-chan," both of which are SO funny to me because he's way older than them. rude as hell, this evil spirit deserves no respect
Shou doesn't use honorifics or titles for ANYONE. Ritsu is just Ritsu, the Ultimate 5 are all their last names, his dad is just Pops. he also exclusively refers to Mob as "Ritsu's brother" dkfjldskfj
Serizawa alternates between "Shigeo-kun" and "Kageyama-kun" with no real rhyme or reason to it. just seems to depend on his mood I guess
#mp100#bro ritsu and shigeo being so polite.. omg...#reigen being reigen#CRYING AT DIMPLE AND REIGEN CALLING SHIGEO MY BOY!! HE IS THEIR BOY!!#this anime has so many details it hurts me#i love it so much#great post op#you have my thanks

this is too rewarding.
i can actually read this.
for my birthday, i bought myself this entire manga in japanese with the intent of ‘translating’ it and teaching myself the language. all 16 volumes, or 単行本 (tankōbon). people often say that learning a language by reading comics written in it or watching TV shows is a terrible idea (and doubly so for japanese). and maybe they have a point:
manga/anime speech tends to be rougher than everyday speech and more ‘direct’. it drops particles like flies; it’s full of vernacular and pronouns that no one actually uses if they want to be taken seriously, and you learn rude words before more immediately useful ones.
manga/anime speech is tailored to specific character types. old men have a stereotypical way of speaking; young girls speak in a certain way, rich-bitch ojou-sama types have their own way of speaking, etc.
actors enunciate more clearly than ordinary people do.
but, like, fuck those people?
many anti-anime folks in the japanese learning community apparently haven’t watched much anime. they assume it’s all shouty, rude shounen battle shows or isekai series with made-up fantasy vocabulary. knowing your context is helpful. as much as i enjoy gaara’s quiet swagger or gintoki’s goofiness, i’m aware i’m not going to learn much from their speech that is applicable to daily life or conversations with others. slice of life series tend to have a better range of japanese flavors, and i’m lucky that i prefer watching them anyway.
mob psycho 100 the anime follows mob psycho 100 the manga closely enough that i can get the readings on kanji compounds AND accurate pitch accent for individual words by just watching and listening carefully. i’m already getting a decent feel for grammar, politeness levels and sentence structure, and i can recognize about 150 words by sight and sound already. i’ve only been at this for a month.
i’m finding that i’m learning some pretty challenging words before simpler ones, which actually makes the simpler words easier to absorb. i learned ‘to haunt’ (取り憑く, toritsuku), ‘to kidnap’ (攫う, sarau) and ‘to collapse’ (倒れる, taoreru) AND how to use their passive indicative forms long before i learned ‘to eat’ or ‘to sleep’. the first word i learned was 倒れた, from 影山が倒れた。(kageyama ga taoreta, or ‘kageyama has passed out’)
and it’s pretty easy to isolate different styles of speaking, at least in this particular series. our protagonist speaks formally with people he doesn’t know well, with his teachers, and his mentor/boss, at least on the clock/in the office. he’s informal with his younger brother, with people he’s pissed off at or has no respect for, and with himself. his boss speaks formally with his clients, and fairly roughly otherwise.
for what it’s worth, the extremely pissed-off looking boy above is saying, more or less, ‘shishou, i asked you to please stop calling me from out of nowhere.’ (shishou, ikinari yobidasu no yamete kudasaitte: master, suddenly stop summoning [me] please [quoting particle, indicating shigeo is quoting, and repeating, himself].)

Mika, Noboru and special guest Chloé !!
Thank you for asking, baby 💕
Mika Aldini:
- Mika is an excellent dancer but she’s also damn good at swimming actually. She’s pretty fast and also has a lot of endurance.
- Ever since she’s been there the first time, Mika dreams of opening a branch of Trattoria Aldini in Verona. Takumi offered to get right down to it, but little Mika forbid it and stubbornly proclaimed she wants to do it on her own once she’s grown.
- Quite a few of Mika’s cloths have some sort of Hibiscus-Pattern on them. The reason for that is that when she was a child Ikumi, whose favorite flower is hibiscus, dressed her up in a lot of clothes that had the flower on them. She’s just kind off used to it, even if hibiscus is not Mika’s personal favorite flower (She still likes them though so)
- Mika’s primary school textbooks are full of little hearts she scribbled there when bored.
- Mika has been planning her wedding ever since she is 10 years old. She’s still unsure where to spent her honeymoon though: Maledives or Paris.
- Two of her other favorite travel spots are Miami and Rio de Janeiro. Her mother bought a holiday home in Miami actually.
- Mika’s holy trinity of movies is “Titanic”, “Dirty Dancing” and “Sleepless in Seattle”
- Mika really loves Aloe Vera drinks.
- Mika also really loves Katsudons. They’re one of her major comfort foods as Ikumi often made them for her throughout her youth.
- Mika’s favorite aquatic animals are dolphins and turtles (and uh....Crocodiles if they count)
Noboru Shinomiya
- Noboru ALWAYS has tablets for headaches with him. Every day. He does not take one every day, but he does get headaches rather often...so he just has them with him just in case.
- Noboru’s grandmother (from his father’s side) is probably the biggest fan of his painting skills. Her whole house it at this point full of his landscape drawings.
- One of Noboru’s favorite periods of art is impressionism. He really loves Claude Monet’s work.
- Noboru greatly adores meerkats. But he wouldn’t want anyone to know.
- Noboru makes pretty good coffee according to Shigeo Eizan (and mind you, the guy has standards when it comes to that). Noboru’s personal faves are Cappuccino and Mocha, but he’s pretty experimental when it comes to coffee.
- Noboru really enjoys an sweets that make either use of nougat or almonds. He also eats quite a lot of almonds on their own. Chestnuts is something he really loves as well.
- One of the people Noboru does actually look up to is Megumi. As Hinako Inui’s son, Noboru has a good idea of Japanese cuisine after all and he really enjoys Megumi’s take on it and her philosophy. He is also a bit of a fan of Nene though and read almost all of the essays she occasionally publishes.
- Noboru made 10 champagne and 10 strawberry-vanilla macarons for Harumi when she became president of the French RS.
- Noboru’s favorite stories as child were the works of Jules Verne.
- His favorite ice cream flavours are hazelnut and vanilla.
Special guest of Kosmima - Secret Service, Chloé Davis
- Chloé is a massive cheapskate who always tries to save money wherever she can. At the same time, she loves coffee to death...which often leads to her complaining over how overpriced they are.
- Most of Chloé’s money is probably not spent on coffee but tights being really. She wears transparent tights to work but she constantly rips them. The longest a tight of her lasted was probably one week. So she always has to buy new ones.
- Her (and Daniel) often go to eat fast food, because it’s cheap.
- Chloé does not drink nearly as much as Daniel but when she does she either drinks gin or vodka. Nothing else. She hardly ever gets drunk though.
- Chloé does not like things that are overly sweet, like classic American cupcakes for example. That makes her sick.
- She’s afraid of rollercoasters. She wouldn’t want anyone to find out but she hates them.
- Chloé keeps up with politics and the news, not just the ones of her country but also the rest of the world as well, and has a rather good understanding of it.
- Because Daniel often deals with hangovers, Chloé does most of the driving. Sometimes she just leaves in the morning without him and leaves him a message saying: “Get there yourself”.
- Chloé does have a soft spot for high heels. Every 5 months or so, when she feels proud with herself possibly, she rewards herself with a pair.
- Her Humor is super dark.

OK SO!!
mob psycho 100 is an anime based off of the manga by the same name.
the main character is 14 year old kageyama “mob” shigeo, a polite, reserved middle schooler who is average in pretty much every way possible- except, of course, for his Godlike Psychic Powers. despite being easily able to disassemble a building with his thoughts, mob is a kind and observant guy, who doesn’t want to hurt people.
reigen arataka (who you might know from his tumblr sexyman fame) is mob’s teacher/employer, a local fraudster who claims to be the greatest psychic of the 21st century (to everyone, mob included), but always has mob do all the real work of exorcising spirits. he’s cheap, underpays mob, lies to everyone, lies to his clients, somehow manages to get away with it all- and is a genuinely good person regardless, who truly does care about mob a lot. (imagine goodtimeswithscar, but with Morals. and now make him a massive loser whose only friend is a 14 year old)
mob and reigen’s relationship is one of the core dynamics of the show, as they start out being kind of losers, who only really have each other, and they both inspire one other to grow!
and beyond that it’s. it’s about friendship! it’s about growing up! it’s about kindness! it challenges its genre conventions, even down to its outwardly-boring protagonist. i haven’t even TALKED about most other characters here but it’s just.
some other things i didn’t mention:
it’s on netflix and a couple other places if you want to watch it legally
i didn’t even go into THE MUSIC or THE ANIMATION or THE STORY ITS ALL SO GOOD
mp100’s emphasis on platonic dynamics is also really good. huge fan of it
ok tired of thinking about the election. tired of how i came into work this morning and so many of my coworkers were in such a good mood. don’t wanna think about it anymore. anyone wanna talk about mob psycho 100 with me

Linger
Rating: T (psychological trauma, heavy topics, vomit) Pairings: Terumob Summary: Shigeo knows that something about him has changed, and not in a good way. He knows when his fingers start to itch, when he's sweating in a cold room, when he sometimes loses the ability to breathe right. He just can't figure out why, or how to fix it. After a week, he finally decides to ask for help. Crossposted to AO3: Linger
This ended up being really long but,, oh well. This is based wholly off the line in the anime where Mogami says the experience will be forever etched in his heart, an exploration of what kind of aftermath that kind of event could have on someone if it was the main focus of the story. I also just really wanted to write some considerate/caring Teru bc he's one of my favorite characters and I love him. Hope you enjoy! This was beta read by @thedeadgodlives, thanks a bunch for your help!
Shigeo’s pencil scratches against the lined paper of his notebook, working out a difficult math problem his teacher had assigned to him the previous school day. His head is leaning on his open hand, fingers digging into his hair and pressing against his scalp as though it will help him think easier. He hums to himself, pausing as he reaches a point in the problem where he can no longer remember the steps to solving it.
He’s never been good at math, but even after years of struggling the nervousness and fear of failure never gets any better. He rolls his pencil between his fingers restlessly, tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth as he fights to remember his teacher’s instructions. It’s no use, he laments after a moment. He’ll have to search his textbook later for the directions. He hopes his teacher doesn’t call on him in class; he’d surely make a fool of himself in front of his classmates.
The fingers holding his pencil tingle, and he pauses in his fiddling. The sensation is familiar to him now, but he still can’t figure out where it’s coming from or why it’s happening. The tingle grows into an incessant itch until he can no longer ignore it. He sets down his pencil, rubbing his fingers together in an attempt to make the itch go away, but it isn’t working. It never has, not since he first started experiencing the itching a week ago. He scratches at his fingers with the nail on his thumb, frowning at his itchy fingers disapprovingly.
Shaking his head, Shigeo returns to his homework, but his focus has been broken. The itch in his hand multiplies and spreads to his other hand, which twitches against his scalp in response. He straightens up in his seat, pressing both hands palm-down on his desk. The sensation lingers in his fingertips, but no matter how he scratches them, the itch doesn’t go away. It’s distracting and annoying, and it’s keeping him from doing his work.
With a disgruntled huff of breath, he pushes himself to his feet and slips out of his tidy bedroom, heading for the bathroom at the end of the hall. He runs the tap hot and lets his hands hover beneath the stream of water, washing away the sickening sensation that clings to them. He leaves them there until the heat of the water becomes too much for him to handle, hissing out a pained breath as he feels his skin scald. He quickly jerks them back, turning the water off and drying his hands on the bathroom towel. He looks up at his reflection in the mirror. He’s paler than usual, he notices, and there’s sweat beading on his brow despite the comfortable temperature of his house. He scrubs it away with the towel, taking deep breaths to calm his nerves. When had his heart started beating so quickly? He swallows down the lump in his throat, carefully folding and replacing the towel as though it had never been touched at all.
He’s not sure what’s wrong with him, exactly, but he recognizes that it probably isn’t supposed to be happening. He doesn’t like to dwell on it, because then his thoughts start to race to places where he can’t control them, places where he’s still trapped in Mogami’s mindscape, fighting for his life in a completely different way than he’s grown accustomed to.
But he isn’t there anymore. He’s home, he’s safe, it’s over.
He repeats the thoughts in his head like a mantra. You’re home, you’re safe, it’s over. The tingling in his fingers is gone, and his heartbeat goes back to it’s regular speed. He feels like he could probably fall asleep now despite the fact that it’s the middle of the day. He still has homework to finish, though, so he returns to his desk and slips back into his chair.
As he attempts the math problem once more, he wonders if his classmates are struggling with the concepts as much as he is. His tongue feels dry. If he keeps making a fool of himself in class, they’ll keep pushing him around, calling him stupid and useless and spilling things on him. They might even try to hurt him, if they’re feeling particularly cruel that day, and he has no way of defending himself without his-
He lets out a gasp, shaking his head. His classmates had never done such things to him. They mostly ignore him, or at best, tolerate his presence. Sure, they laugh when he’s unable to answer the teacher’s question, but they’ve never done anything outright cruel to him, at least not to his face.
His head hurts. He scrubs at his face with both hands, groaning softly. His head feels foggy and his mind is racing, trying to reconcile two polarizing images of the same group of people he’s known since he was in grade school. It isn’t the first time he’s confused himself with conflicting memories, and every time it never fails to give him a splitting headache. He needs painkillers, and something to distract him from his unsettling thoughts.
His hand moves to pick up his phone as if on instinct, and before he knows it he’s opening up his text app in search of someone to reach out to. He pauses, fingers hovering over the keys. Hesitating. Reigen always gives good advice in times like these, but he’ll pry in deeper than Shigeo is willing to divulge. Ritsu, maybe? No, he’s still at school at this time, talking with the student council. He’s not sure Ritsu would be very good at taking his mind off of things, anyway.
Letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he’s holding, Shigeo punches in Hanazawa Teruki’s contact. Yes, Teru would know what to do to take his mind off of things. He sends a quick, simple message: “Hello, Hanazawa. Are you busy?”
He keeps his messages brief and polite, refraining from using phrases that may come across as too friendly or overbearing. Teru’s never been one to take the professional route, though, and his reply comes a minute later.
“Hey, Kageyama! :D Ah, you could say so. I’m working on some homework for a class. Why, did you need something?”
A small smile comes to Shigeo’s face. Teru’s friendly tone is easy to respond to, and the emojis he always includes are an easy way for Shigeo to deduce how he’s feeling. Not to mention, they’re quite cute. “Ah, sorry to bother you, then. I was just wondering if you had time to hang out, but if you’re busy, then I understand,” he types in response, curt and apologetic.
“Don’t apologize! I should really take a break anyway,” Reads Teru’s text. “I’d love to hang out, actually! :) If you have some homework, why don’t we work on it together? You can come over to my place and keep me company.”
Shigeo’s gaze flicks to his half-filled notebook page. “Are you good at math?” he asks.
Teru’s reply is immediate. “I do well enough. I can help you with it if you like, as long as you help me with my japanese in return.”
Shigeo’s fairly confident that he can at least help a little bit when it comes to Japanese, so he agrees quickly to the arrangement and tells Teru that he’ll be over shortly. He packs up his school supplies and changes out of his uniform, trading his black slacks and jacket for a tee-shirt and jeans. He leaves his room and heads downstairs to walk over to the train station, bidding his mother goodbye with a promise to stay safe on his way.
The trip is quick and easy, nothing eventful getting in his way as he turns toward Teru’s apartment from the station. He’s only been there a handful of times, including the few hours he’s spent resting there after Ritsu was kidnapped by Claw, but he’s memorized the stop he needs to exit from and the route he takes to arrive at Teru’s front door.
Teru’s quick to answer when Shigeo knocks softly, greeting him with a smile and a wave. “Hi, Kageyama. Come on in and have a seat,” he says, stepping aside and holding the door open for Shigeo to move past him.
“Thanks for having me,” he says politely, slipping off his shoes and leaving them by the door like he always does when he comes over. He makes his way over to Teru’s living room, where his friend has already taken up shop to work on his own homework. There’s a textbook open on the coffee table beside his workbook, and an empty mug with the last dregs of a sweet-smelling tea in it. Shigeo sits down on the couch while Teru steeps another batch of the tea, a common routine for the two of them when they study together. He pulls his notebook out of his backpack and sets it up beside Teru’s, fetching a pencil from a side pocket to write with.
Teru joins him shortly after, a steaming cup in each hand, and sets one in front of Shigeo.
“Ah, thank you,” Shigeo murmurs, taking a tentative sip of the hot drink.
Teru flashes him a smile and plops down next to him, leaving just a few inches of space between them for their arms to move. Teru has always been the kind of person who likes to casually touch his friends, as far as Shigeo can tell, quick to guide him with a hand on his back or a congratulatory squeeze of his shoulder. He doesn’t flinch when their arms brush or their hands touch accidentally, and he’s quick to loop an arm around his shoulders or lean against him when he’s feeling tired. Shigeo doesn’t mind the constant contact, and Teru seems appreciative of his receptiveness, so when he lays an arm across the back of the couch behind Shigeo’s shoulders, he doesn’t react or draw attention to it. Instead he focuses on his math work, determined to solve the problem he’s stuck on.
Teru’s quick to jump in and help him, praising him for what he’s done correctly and gently pointing out his mistakes. Teru isn’t at all like his teachers or classmates, Shigeo realizes as he listens to Teru’s instructions. He moves at a pace Shigeo can easily keep up with and doesn’t berate him for not understanding right away, and he’s endlessly grateful for his friend’s innate understanding of him.
“Thank you, Hanazawa, this all makes much more sense now,” Shigeo says once they’ve gone through a few problems together. He turns to smile at Teru, setting down his pencil and letting his hands fall to his sides.
Teru’s face goes slightly pink, but the pleased smile on his face shows his gratitude at Shigeo’s words. “Anytime, Kageyama. There’s no better way to learn than by teaching someone else. At least, that’s what my math teacher always says,” he replies, reaching up with one hand to tuck a strand of hair behind his ear.
His hair is getting longer again, Shigeo notices. He hums, thoughtful, and reaches out with a hand to brush aside a strand that’s fallen into Teru’s eyes. His fingers graze Teru’s temple as he does, feeling an annoying little zap at the miniscule contact. It’s not enough to make him flinch, but it’s noticeable nonetheless.
Teru doesn’t move away from his touch, but the blush on his cheeks darkens some, and he glances away in an almost embarrassed fashion. “Ah, it’s getting a bit long, isn’t it? I cut it short after our fight, but I’ve been growing it out since then. I kinda miss wearing it long,” he says, rambling a bit, but Shigeo doesn’t mind. Teru’s always been more of a talker than he is.
“It looks nice,” Shigeo compliments, letting his hand fall back to the couch again. He turns his attention back toward his homework, nearly finished now, as Teru falls quiet.
The other boy doesn’t respond, going back to his own work, but a moment later Shigeo feels bold fingers brush against the hand that rests between them, cautiously slotting themselves between his own.
The touch burns like fire almost immediately, seeping into his skin with jolts of white-hot electricity that stab up his arm and make his mind scream, Don’t touch me!
He rips his hand away with a pained gasp, holding it against his chest. The searing heat continues to spread, making his arms quiver against his control and causing his stomach to turn. He feels queasy and hot as the burn spreads to his head and he breaks into a sweat.
“I-I’m sorry,” Teru stammers, quickly retracting his hand. Shigeo’s head jerks to look at him. He looks incredibly guilty and a little mortified, actively leaning out of Shigeo’s space when he normally would lean in. “I just thought - I mean, it seemed like - ugh, what did I do?” He tears his gaze away, clasping his hands together as if to punish them for wandering.
Shigeo opens his mouth to reassure his friend that it’s alright, it’s not his fault, that there’s something wrong with himself that had caused a misunderstanding, but the words die in his throat. His tongue feels thick and dry, his throat thinner and hoarser with each passing second. He feels like he’s going to vomit.
He stands up in a hurry and makes a beeline for Teru’s bathroom, pushing the door shut behind him as he struggles to take a meaningful breath. His fingers burn terribly, the sensation making his stomach roll. He gags on his own choppy gasps, bracing his hands on the marble countertop around the sink and leaning over it in case he really does throw up. He feels like his heart is about to leap out of his chest, and his lungs burn, as though there’s no oxygen in the air to replenish them. His face is pale and he’s begun sweating profusely, his forehead damp and cold to the touch. With a start he realizes that he’s crying, tears rolling down his cheeks and falling into the sink. His knees wobble, and his stomach does another nauseating flip. He barely manages to fall to his knees in front of the toilet before he’s heaving up the contents of that day’s breakfast and lunch into it.
There’s a knock at the door. “Kageyama? Are you alright?” Teru asks from behind the door, voice thick with concern.
Shigeo’s voice continues to evade him, stomach heaving once more, but there’s nothing left to throw up. He gags, squeezing his eyes shut.
“I’m coming in,” Teru warns. Shigeo hasn’t locked the door behind him, and it swings open with urgency. In a second Teru is at his side, a steady hand on his back. “Kageyama! You look terrible, what happened?” he frets, reaching across Shigeo’s back to tear a strip of toilet paper from the roll. He holds it out to him.
Shigeo draws in a shuddering breath, his shaky hands grasping the toilet’s rim so tightly his knuckles have gone white. After a moment he detaches one hand from it and takes the wad of paper from Teru’s outstretched hand, opening his eyes. His vision is fuzzy, black spots dancing at his periphery. Am I going to faint? he wonders with a flash of fear. He manages to wipe the edges of his mouth with the toilet paper, but his breath tastes like bile and his head feels like it’s going to burst. “Teru, I-I think I’m really sick,” he manages to choke out, voice shaky to the point of unintelligibility and thick with misery.
Teru takes the paper from Shigeo’s hand and drops it in the toilet, flushing away the evidence. Then he grasps him firmly by both shoulders and turns him so they’re facing each other. “You’re not sick, you’re panicking,” he says, reaching up with one hand to push Shigeo’s sweat-slicked bangs out of his face. His eyes flicker back and forth across Shigeo’s face, brows furrowed in unhidden concern. “You’re hyperventilating,” he realizes worriedly, biting his lower lip. “Try breathing with me, okay? In, and out…” Odd. Shigeo doesn’t feel like he’s breathing at all.
Teru holds his gaze as he repeats himself, over and over, and Shigeo fights to match his tempo. Teru’s thumb presses against the front of his shoulder and rubs small circles just beneath his collarbone, offering some sort of stimulation to distract him from his racing thoughts. Shigeo clasps his hands over his knees and digs his fingers in, the sensation keeping his vision from fuzzing out entirely.
He isn’t sure how long the two of them sit on the cold tile floor for, Teru murmuring words of reassurance to Shigeo as he fights to control his rapid breathing, but eventually the dark spots fade and the throbbing in his head goes down enough to let him think again. His face is slick from sweat, but his hands have stopped burning, a faint tingle all that remains.
Teru stands up and releases his hold on Shigeo, wetting a rag with cold water from the tap above them. Shigeo’s breathing stalls for a split second at the loss of contact before starting back up again, unsure what to do until Teru kneels in front of him again and presses the cold cloth to his face. The sting of it shocks Shigeo to his senses, his hands twitching involuntarily. “Cold,” he gasps.
Teru chuckles, using the wet rag to mop away the sweat that clings to Shigeo’s forehead. “It’ll make you feel better,” he assures, holding the cloth against the back of his neck.
Shigeo lets out a breathy sigh as the rag cools his overheated face and neck and makes him feel overall a little less sticky and gross. “Thank you,” he murmurs.
“It’s no problem. I, uh, know what it feels like,” Teru admits with a smile, and it’s so soft and sincere and caring that Shigeo almost does a double-take. “Still, you gave me a scare. What happened?”
Shigeo glances down, focusing on the fading coldness on the back of his neck. He doesn’t answer, but not because he doesn’t want to tell Teru what’s been going on. He simply doesn’t know how to put his feelings into words.
Thankfully, Teru seems to pick up on his thoughts. “Well, there’s no need to force yourself,” he says, removing the rag from Shigeo’s neck and setting it on the bathroom counter. He pushes himself to his feet. “Do you want to use my shower? It always helps me to feel better when I’m feeling overwhelmed, plus it’s good for thinking. I’ll lend you something clean to wear, too, so you don’t have to stay in those sweaty clothes.” He extends a hand out for Shigeo to take, then his smile falters and he appears to think better of it. He swallows visibly, curling his arm up toward his chest as a form of recoil. Shigeo doesn’t blame him, after the way he’d reacted to the last time they’d touched hands.
Shigeo tears his gaze away from Teru’s hand and looks down at himself as Teru mentions his clothes, flinching at his bedraggled appearance. There’s sweat stains in the pits of his white tee-shirt and, horrifyingly, a few spots of vomit that hadn’t quite hit the mark. He bites back what he wants to say, an instinctive reassurance that he’s fine and doesn’t need to be taken care of anymore, and instead just nods his head. “That sounds like a good idea,” he sighs.
“Great. I’ll grab you a change of clothes, then, and a fresh towel,” Teru says, pretending his little misstep hadn’t occurred at all. “You can use my shampoo and stuff if you want, I doubt you’ll use as much as I always do.” He laughs at his own words, turning to the door, but it comes across nervous. “Be right back,” he adds as an afterthought, pulling the door half-shut behind him to offer some semblance of privacy.
Shigeo takes a deep breath and hauls himself to his feet, using the edge of the counter as leverage. He still feels a bit shaky on his feet, but as least he doesn’t feel like he’s going to keel over and pass out anymore. He runs the tap water cold, scrubbing his hands briefly with Teru’s citrusy soap, and feels the last remnants of the burning sensation disappear as the water washes them away. He lets out a breath of relief at the return to semi-normalcy, though he’s still pale and a little uncertain on his feet. He splashes some of the cold water on his face for good measure before turning off the tap.
Teru returns, silently pushing open the bathroom door, as Mob is drying his face. He has a fluffy gray towel draped over his arm, along with the promised change of clothes. “These should fit you, I hope,” he says, setting them in a neat pile atop the kitchen counter. Then he holds the towel out to Shigeo. “Here, you can use this. Just hang it up on the hook once you’re finished so it can dry.” He nods his head toward the hook that protrudes from the inside of the bathroom door.
Shigeo manages a small smile, accepting the towel from Teru’s outstretched hand. “Of course. Thanks again, Hanazawa,” he says. “I’ll make it up to you soon.”
“Don’t worry about things like that. We’re friends, so there’s no need to keep track of favors,” Teru assures with a wave of his hand. He steps out of the bathroom to give Shigeo some space. “I’m going to work on some more homework while you shower, so just come find me when you’re done, okay?”
Shigeo nods in agreement and Teru closes the door behind him with a parting smile, leaving Shigeo alone with the shower.
He takes advantage of Teru’s offer to use his shampoo, scrubbing the salty sweat from his hair and filling the misty air with the scent of Teru’s fruity hair products. He pushes his bangs away with his fingers and cranes his neck back, letting the warm water pelt his face and return color to his cheeks. He takes deep breaths, letting his thoughts wander. He obviously owes Teru an explanation for his unexpected outburst, but he still isn’t entirely sure what had caused it. He glances down at his hands, curling and uncurling his fingers. Ever since his encounter with Mogami, he hasn’t been able to touch anyone else without feeling like he’s been scorched by an open flame. His hands had it the worst, he’d determined. That’s not even counting the times he’s found himself staring at the throats of his classmates, his mind flashing back to the student he’d nearly asphyxiated in Mogami’s monochromatic world.
Taking a breath, Shigeo lifts a hand and lightly covers his own throat. He can distinctly remember the feeling of Teru’s fingers digging into his flesh, squeezing until no air could pass in or out. His touch had left no bruises at the time, Shigeo’s body hyper-durable as a result of his psychic powers, but the memory is still there. He’d long forgiven Teru for their fight, to the point where he hardly thought back on the event anymore, at least before Mogami. Since then the thought has come up more and more often, as he recalls his imaginary classmate’s terrified eyes and gasping breaths. Did I sound like that, when Teru attacked me? he wonders, frowning.
Teru… he’d have to apologize properly for the way he’d reacted. In truth, he’d kind of wanted to hold his hand. He’d been curious about it for a while now, actually, since the two of them had infiltrated and subsequently escaped the Claw 7th division headquarters and Teru had proven himself to be a loyal and dependable friend. He caught himself staring, sometimes, at Teru’s face, at his back, his hands, a quiet curiosity he wasn’t bold enough to act on, but that was always there. What would Teru do if he decided to hug him, or reach for his hand? Would he even be able to without feeling the fire burning him?
He turns off the water after several minutes of simply standing under the hot spray, toweling himself off. He slips into Teru’s lent clothes, a soft pink sweater and comfortable gray sweats, chuckling softly. Even now, Teru was trying his best to take care of him. He appreciates his friend’s experience and comforting presence, but he knows he has a hard conversation ahead of him. He uses the towel to soak up the extra water from his hair until it’s damp instead of dripping, then hangs it up on the hook behind the door to dry. Then he cracks open the bathroom door and slips outside, leaving it open to ventilate the mist.
When he pads, barefoot, out of the bathroom, he spots Teru sitting back on the couch, staring at his open notebook. He’s not holding a pencil, though, and his leg bounces restlessly. He looks up as Shigeo exits. “Ah, you’re finished. Do you feel better now?” he asks with that familiar soft smile.
Shigeo swallows and nods, already feeling his nervousness bubbling up as he crosses the room to take his seat beside Teru once again. “Yes, thank you. I’m sorry for troubling you,” he replies.
Teru shakes his head. “It isn’t your fault. You had a panic attack, and a pretty bad one at that. Those things are out of our control.”
Shigeo clasps his hands together. “So, you get them, too?” he asks softly.
“Sometimes.” Teru looks down at his empty tea mug. “I’ve learned how to cope with them, to an extent. Have you had one before?”
Shigeo hums, then nods, remembering how he’d felt the burning in his fingers just that afternoon. At the time he hadn’t been able to place what was wrong, but it fit in hindsight, now that Teru had explained it to him. “Never as bad as that, but sometimes my hands get really hot and shaky, and I get pale and sweaty, and it’s hard to breath for a while. When that happens, I always wash my hands with hot water and it goes away. This time was… the worst one, so far,” he admits. “I’m sorry I reacted so badly to you touching me.”
Teru chokes on a nervous chuckle, which turns into a brief cough. He clears his throat into his hand. “Ah, I shouldn’t have done that without permission. It was just an urge, I suppose. You obviously didn’t like it though, so I won’t do it again, I promise,” he says, but he can’t stop the hints of disappointment that come through as he speaks.
Shigeo shakes his head quickly. “No, I didn’t dislike it,” he assures. “I normally don’t mind when you touch me, I even like it most of the time. I just haven’t really… been myself lately, I suppose.” He unclasps his fingers and stares down at his open palms, frowning. “When you touched my hand, it felt like it was burning. Other times, when I’ve felt panicked, my hands will start itching until I can’t take it anymore. Like when a mosquito bites you, but far worse. It’s only my hands, too. When Master grabs my shoulder or something like that, it doesn’t have the same effect.”
Teru looks concerned to hear this, but there’s some relief in his face too, that Shigeo hasn’t completely rejected his touch. “When did this start happening?” he asks.
“It’s been about a week,” Shigeo admits softly. He fiddles with the soft edge of his borrowed sweater to give his hands something to do. “Ever since I defeated Mogami Keiji.”
Teru’s eyes widen at the name; Shigeo’s told him about Mogami’s psychic powers and the world he’d lived in for six months, but at the time he’d played it off as something that was over, finished. As it would appear, it isn’t over at all. “Did something happen in there that’s making you panic? A bad experience, or something he said to you?” His voice is edging on protective, Shigeo realizes, and the thought is oddly comforting. What isn’t comforting, however, is the realization that he’ll have to describe what he’d done.
He falls quiet for several seconds, but Teru is patient, and doesn’t push him for answers before he’s ready. Shigeo is grateful. Teru is trustworthy, he knows, and he’s sure that he won’t think any less of him for something that technically never really happened, but that doesn’t keep the doubts from coming. Shigeo can feel his headache resurfacing as he struggles to tell himself that, yeah, it wasn’t something he’d actually done with his own two hands. His body had been in Reigen and Dimple’s care at the time, but in the moment it had felt very real. “I think I almost killed someone, in Mogami’s dream land,” he confesses, the words heavy on his tongue. “They were bullying me, telling me I was stupid and worthless and terrible. I just felt so angry.” He pauses to take a breath, trying not to ramble, but the words don’t stop coming. “I know it wasn’t a real place, and I was being influenced by an evil spirit, but those are still choices that I made, I think. Sometimes my memories from that world bleed out into this one and I catch myself being scared of my classmates, wondering when they’re going to beat me up next or what horrible things they’re saying when I’m not around. To be honest, I-I can’t tell my real memories apart from the ones Mogami created for me. My heart knows what’s real, but my head gets all fuzzy and my memories get all jumbled up and then I get a really bad headache and nothing gets solved at all.”
As if on cue, Shigeo feels his head throb painfully, and he stifles a pained noise, wincing.
“Sounds like you’ve had a rough time,” Teru says, but there’s an uncertainty to his voice that says he really has no idea what Shigeo’s talking about. He stands up and moves into the kitchen, rifling around in one of the cabinets. Shigeo doesn’t blame him for not understanding. He doubts many others have had an experience like he has, and if they had, they likely hadn’t lived through it.
“I had thought it was over,” he sighs, pausing as his head gives another painful throb. “It’s been a week, Hanazawa. I feel like it should be in the past now.” He leans his forehead into one hand, the other falling limp on his lap, palm skyward.
Teru returns, pressing a bottle into Shigeo’s free hand. He’s careful not to let their skin touch, which Shigeo is simultaneously grateful and disappointed about. He doesn’t want Teru to distance himself over something that shouldn’t even be happening, but, well, he wasn’t left with much of a choice. Teru sets a cup of water on the table in front of him and says, “Take two.”
Shigeo blinks, glancing at the label on the bottle. Painkillers. Relieved, he untwists the bottle’s cap and shakes two bright red pills out of it, setting it aside and picking up the cup. He downs both pills with one swig of water. “Thank you, I think I needed that,” he sighs.
Teru hums to show he’s heard, but he’s deep in thought. “I’m no therapist, Kageyama, but I think what you experienced classifies as trauma, maybe even PTSD,” he says after a moment of quiet. “It’s obviously had a prolonged effect on your body, and your mind. That kind of thing can cause panic attacks like the one you had. To be honest, I’m not sure there's much I can do to help you with that.”
Shigeo sighs, slumping over in his seat. “I don’t know where else to go,” he says softly. “I know there’s something wrong with me, and that I should probably see a doctor, or-or a therapist, but what am I supposed to tell them that won’t make me sound like I’ve gone insane?” He pauses, takes a moment to breath before things get out of control again. “I think, if I can create a divide between what’s real and what happened in my dream, some of these symptoms will go away, but I don’t know how to do that by myself.”
Teru leans back in his seat, worrying his lip between his teeth for a moment. Then he blinks, eyes bright, and sits straight up again. “Why don’t we make a game out of it?” he suggests. “Tell me something that happened, it doesn’t matter where the memory comes from. I’ll tell you if it’s real or not.” He grins at the idea, looking quite pleased with it.
Shigeo blinks. Could that really work? “What about the things I never told you about?” he asks. He and Teru talk often, whether it’s in person or via text, but there’s no way Teru will be able to dissect all his jumbled memories.
“Well, I’ll just have to admit defeat at that point, then,” Teru replies with a shrug, “but I think it’s worth a shot, if you’re willing to give it a try.”
Shigeo hums, mulling it over. It couldn’t hurt, as far as he can imagine. “Okay, let’s try it,” he agrees. He combs through his recent memories, searching for something he knows is true. “Um… I tried to run for student council once, but when it was time for me to speak, I didn’t say anything,” he begins.
“That’s true,” Teru says immediately. “That was when Emi asked you out.”
Shigeo smiles; it kind of feels like a quiz show. “Alright. I once exorcised a group of over fifteen bikers and their gang boss.”
“True,” Teru repeats. “You exorcised a huge evil spirit there too, right?”
Shigeo nods, chuckling softly. “It was big, but it wasn’t very strong,” he confirms. “Okay, next one, then… Sometimes, my classmates like to hit me for fun.”
Teru’s smile falters at this, obviously put off a bit by the morbid tone, but plays along for the sake of the game. “No, that’s false. Your classmates mostly don’t pay attention to you at all.”
Shigeo lets out a relieved breath. “Yeah, that’s what I thought,” he says. Logically, he’d always known the difference between Mogami’s harsh reality and his own privileged life, but something within him felt validated that someone else could also make the distinction. “Why don’t you do one, Hanazawa?”
“Me?” Teru echoes in surprise. “Hmm, I guess I can try to trick you with a lie.” He taps his chin with one finger, searching for something to say. “When I was a kid, I used to look for coins on the school playground and collect them in a little jar.”
Shigeo’s face splits into a smile. “Ah, I remember you talking about that. It’s true,” he says. “Okay, my turn. When my brother sees me in trouble, he sometimes avoids getting involved to protect himself.”
Teru shakes his head. “No way, Ritsu is way too protective of you to ever do that,” he says. “False.” He fixes Shigeo with his dark blue gaze, growing more confident in his answers. “I broke off my connection to Blake Vinegar’s gang after you beat me in a fight,” he says, leaning forward in his seat.
Shigeo nods. “It was one of the first things you did.”
Teru’s eyebrows raise and he sports a devious grin. “Oh? Who says I’m not still controlling them from the shadows?” he challenges.
Shigeo doesn’t answer, but after a moment they both devolve into fits of uncontrollable giggling. It’s good to know that they can joke about those days without feeling like it’s bringing up bad memories. Rather, the incident merely marks the start of their friendship. “I can’t imagine you doing things like that now,” he says. “You’ve changed a lot, Hanazawa.”
Teru’s laughter turns more self-conscious at Shigeo’s compliment, but he’s clearly pleased to be told so. “Yeah? I’m glad. You’ve changed quite a bit yourself, Kageyama. In a good way,” he replies, and the pink flush is back.
Shigeo finds himself staring at it, somewhat distracted. “True or false,” he begins, voice softening. “You and I are friends in both worlds.”
Teru blinks. “I don’t know,” he replies, “but we’re definitely friends in this one, so that’s what’s important.”
Shigeo nods, accepting this. He shifts a touch closer to Teru, fiddling with the fingers on one of his hands. His leg and Teru’s are nearly touching. “You and I broke into the Claw 7th Division headquarters after Ritsu was kidnapped.”
“That’s true,” Teru replies, glancing at Shigeo curiously. He’s noticed the way Shigeo is inching closer, as though he has a purpose behind wanting to be so close.
He reaches out and brushes the back of his knuckles against the side of Teru’s hand experimentally, catching the hitch in Teru’s breathing when they make contact. Unpleasant sparks poke at his skin where it touches Teru’s, and he draws back quickly, thoughtful. Teru has his eyes fixed on him, concerned but curious. He continues, “Sometimes I come to your school to walk you to my apartment for our study sessions.”
Shigeo nods. His reaches out again, this time touching with the pads of his fingers. He lets the touch linger, and Teru doesn’t move, frozen in place. Shigeo draws a sharp breath, wincing. Electric shocks sting his fingertips, but the heat is bearable for a few seconds before he feels like he needs to retreat. When he finally does, he says, “That’s true.”
“Yeah, it is,” Teru agrees, breathless. Shigeo stares at his fingers, eyebrows furrowed, and catches Teru turn over his hand in his periphery, his palm facing toward the ceiling. “Once, I even went back to your house, and we did homework in your room instead. Your mom wouldn’t leave us alone, and kept asking if we wanted snacks.”
Shigeo cracks a smile at this, and when his hand ventures out this time, he presses his palm against Teru’s and just lets them rest on top of each other. He tenses, hot needles poking into the surface of his palm. He curls his fingers around Teru’s hand and squeezes it, willing the sensation to disappear. I control my own life, he reminds himself firmly, and doesn’t let go despite the occasional stab of discomfort in his palm. He feels the heat spread upward, sweat beading at his hairline, but he doesn’t feel like he’s panicking, so he doesn’t let go.
Teru shifts his grip, emboldened, and slots their fingers together.
Shigeo stumbles over his breath, eyes widening. The motion feels like two strips of sandpaper rubbing together, chafing him. Teru jolts, moving to disconnect their hands, but Shigeo stops him before he can go through with it, squeezing his hand tightly to prevent him from moving too far away.
He flinches as the burning sensation begins, crawling from his fingertips up his arm. “It hurts,” he grunts through clenched teeth, but he maintains his grip on Teru’s hand despite the way Teru moves once more to break the contact. He looks up and meets Teru’s dark blue gaze. “Wait, just a bit longer.”
Teru stares at him, fear and uncertainty in his gaze, but doesn’t force him to let go, just squeezes his hand back in an attempt to reassure him that all will be well. “I stole you away from a date so you could break up your little brother’s fight after he discovered his psychic powers,” he says, watching Shigeo carefully.
The boy chuckles under his breath, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead. He’s thankful that Teru can still find ways to lighten the mood, even though he’s clearly just as distraught as Shigeo is. “It wasn’t a date, I’ve told you that before,” he insists, calming some.
Eventually, thankfully, the burning sensation reaches a peak and then begins to wane. Shigeo feels the heat in his face go down with his timed breathing, and he relaxes the iron grip he’d been holding Teru’s hand with. He doesn’t let go, though, feeling the itchy tingles and occasional stabs of discomfort lingering. “Are you okay?” Teru asks, worried.
Shigeo nods, giving his hand a little squeeze and smiling at the little noise of surprise Teru makes. He coughs into his hand, though it doesn’t sound very convincing. “How do you feel?” he says after a moment.
Shigeo’s eyelids droop, but he continues to cradle Teru’s hand in his; his skin is soft and the way he holds his hand is endearingly gentle. “Itchy, but otherwise okay. I think it’s going away, for now,” he says, rubbing his thumb experimentally against Teru’s. Without warning, he drops his head to Teru’s shoulder, sighing out sofly, “Your hand is warm.”
Teru jumps slightly at the contact, but quickly relaxes into Shigeo’s touch the way he always does. “Good warm or bad warm?” he asks lamely, all his usual flirtatiousness and bravado and confidence blown out the window by one unpredictable Shigeo.
“Good warm,” Shigeo murmurs. “My head feels a bit clearer, too. I think the game worked, at least a little.” It hasn’t cleared up all his misgivings, and there are still plenty of jumbled memories in his head, but he’s starting to see the distinctions that separated the real world from the fabricated one, now that someone else has been able to reaffirm them. He bites back a yawn, humming sleepily. “That made me tired. I was already kind of drowsy from before I came over,” he says. The painkillers are starting to kick in, thankfully, dulling the pounding in his head and, interestingly, banishing the lingering itchiness from his hands.
Teru peers down at him through dark blue eyes. “Wow, you do look tired. Will you be alright getting home by yourself? Your house is pretty far away from here,” he points out. “Maybe you should just stay here for the night. It’s dangerous to fall asleep on the train, and I’d hate for you to end up lost.”
Shigeo hums noncommittally, drawing a chuckle from Teru’s lips. “I’ll take that as a yes, then. Don’t fall asleep yet, though, you need to tell your parents that you’re staying over. You don’t want to worry them, after all.”
Reluctantly, Shigeo sits up and picks up his phone from the coffee table. “Alright, I’ll give mom a call. Thanks for letting me stay, you’re probably right about falling asleep on the train. Honestly, I don’t know if I can keep my eyes open much longer.”
“I’ll make space in my room,” Teru says, standing up. He hesitates for a moment before untangling his fingers from Shigeo’s, then turns away before he can see his expression. “Er, be right back,” he adds, moving across the living room and disappearing into his bedroom.
Shigeo feels a flash of disappointment at the loss of contact. He likes holding hands with Teru, and he hopes his friend won’t be hesitant about touching him now. He doesn’t want to lose that contact. Shaking his head, he calls up his mother and tells her that he’ll be back the next morning. Thankfully, it’s a weekend, which means he doesn’t have to worry about waking up extra early to go home for his uniform, and his mother sounds almost excited to hear that he’s staying with a friend. Well, she’s always liked Teru. “Thanks, mom. Love you too, bye,” he says, and ends the call as Teru reemerges from his room.
“Okay, I know you’re tired,” Teru says, making his way over to where a small television is set up in the corner of the living room, “but hear me out. This is a sleepover now, which means we have to watch a movie.” He’s carrying a bunched-up, thick blanket in one arm, which he tosses onto the couch beside Shigeo. “If you’re up for it, of course. It’s an action movie.”
Well, Shigeo thinks, amused, I can’t say no to an action movie. It was his favorite genre, after all, so he nods in agreement. “Mmhmm, that’s okay. I might fall asleep during it, though,” he warns, if only so Teru doesn’t get offended.
Teru just smiles at him, popping the disk into his DVD player and turning on the television. “No problem,” he replies, moving back to the couch and taking his seat beside his friend. He takes the blanket and drapes it over both of them.
They sit close together as the intro to the movie begins, but Shigeo is quick to notice that Teru consciously avoids bumping into him by accident. He’s trying to be considerate, he knows, but it’s still a little frustrating that Teru was changing his typical behavior over concern. It’s nice of him to want to stay within Shigeo’s comfort zone, but it’s not what Shigeo wants him to do. After a few minutes of sitting quietly, Shigeo reaches over and takes Teru’s hand once more, linking their fingers together over top of the blanket. He scoots closer to make the action more comfortable, too, letting his side press against Teru’s so their linked hands lay atop his lap. He glances at Teru, searching for signs of discomfort, and instead finds Teru fighting an obviously pleased grin.
Smiling softly, he returns his attention to the movie. His hand feels normal, to his relief, and he’s fairly sure the painkillers Teru lent him are partly to thank for that. Even if it’s temporary, he basks in the feeling of Teru’s soft skin against his own, the way he idly rubs circles into his skin with his thumb. Despite the action happening on the tv screen, Shigeo finds his eyelids drooping within the first hour, lulled by the long day he’d had and Teru’s fond touch.
“Can I lay on you?” Shigeo asks, stifling a yawn behind his free hand as he turns to look at his… friend? He blinks, mind blanking. All of a sudden friend doesn’t feel like the right word. The thought knocks him so off-guard that he nearly misses Teru’s nod, a subtle action of consent.
“I don’t mind.”
Shigeo nods back, removing his hand from Teru’s light grasp and shifting away from him to make room. Teru looks confused about why he’s putting distance between them, but then Shigeo lowers himself down onto the couch and lays his head down on Teru’s lap.
It takes Teru a moment to relax into this new position, but he’s never been one to shy away from an affectionate touch. He moves one arm to the side of the couch and lets it rest there, his other hand hovering, unsure where to let it fall. After a moment, however, it finds a place at the back of Shigeo’s head, threading into his hair. His touch is calculated, experimental. Shigeo can tell he doesn’t want to go too far. “Is this okay?” Teru asks him in a soft voice, his fingers traveling down and brushing Shigeo’s bangs away from his forehead.
“Yes,” Shigeo replies, voice thick with weariness. He lets out a soft hum as Teru’s fingers grow more confident, drawing through his bangs and brushing over the skin of his scalp in feather-light touches. He closes his eyes, the movie forgotten. Part of him doesn’t want to sleep yet, wants to watch more of the movie, but Teru makes the decision for him. He removes his hand from Shigeo’s hair, and a moment later he feels the blanket being tucked around his shoulders and neck so it covers him completely. Then the hand returns to his hair, rhythmically brushing it away from his face as soft fingers trace his hairline and tickle the back of his neck.
In the soft, fuzzy space between wakefulness and sleep, he feels Teru bend over him and brush his lips over his temple, feather-soft and loving. They leave a warmth behind them, bringing a faint smile to Shigeo’s face as Teru’s soft caresses lull him into a quick and comfortable sleep.

Somebody asked me for some anime recs. I asked them what kind of genres they’re into but I’m not getting a reply, so here are just some general recommendations for good stuff to watch.
I assume they meant new anime so I’m only focusing on those.
Made in Abyss (2017) (warning for Body horror, violence and gore)
The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface.
Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.
Pros:
Ghibli artists working on the backgrounds and environments
likeable characters
crushing atmosphere
incredible world building
Really compelling mysteries
Very emotional
Cons:
The manga its based on has a lot of lolicon bullshit. But the anime has doneits best to either remove or downplay those elements as childhood innocence rather than the author being a creep
Ends without clear answers as we have to wait for season 2
Not for you if you dislike violence or body horror
That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime (2018)
Thirty-seven-year-old Satoru Mikami is a typical corporate worker, who is perfectly content with his monotonous lifestyle in Tokyo. In the midst of a casual encounter with his colleague, a knife weilding maniac attacks them. Satoru, in shielding his co-worker and his co-worker’s new girlfriend, is fatally stabbed, and dies.
And then he wakes up again. But now, in the body of a blob of slime. In doing so, he acquires newfound skills—notably, the power to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. He then stumbles upon the sealed Catastrophe-level monster "Storm Dragon" Veldora who had been sealed away for the past 300 years for devastating a town to ashes. Sympathetic to his predicament, Satoru befriends him, promising to assist in destroying the seal. In return, Verudora bestows upon him the name Rimuru Tempest to grant him divine protection.
With a goal now, the newly named Rimuru sets out to explore this fantasy world, stumbling into situations where other people need help, and since finding ways to live peacefully is much less hassle, Rimuru does his best to settle conflicts and help people to get along. Mostly because he’s got nothing better to do.
Pros:
Likeable, chilled out protagonist who acts and behaves like an adult
Not the average wish-fullfilment harem-in-disguise type stuff you expect from the average Isekai show
Characters focusing on trying to help each other and be kind without coming across as cheesy or unrealistic
Fun powers and “how are you gonna fix this mess?” situations
Cons:
occasional anime tiddy
Mob Psycho 100 (2016) (If you’ve seen season 1 already then watch season 2)
An Eighth-grader Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama is possibly the most powerful psychic on earth. Which is the only thing he has going for him which, in his opinion, isn’t much. Due to his powers going crazy if he gets overwhelmed by his emotions, Mob has spent his life suppressing his feelings, both negative and positive. As a result, however, Mob is an extremely socially awkward and shy person who struggles to connect to people.
The story follows Mob as he tries to find ways to better himself as a person, aided by the fake psychic Reigen who both uses Mob’s real psychic powers to exorcise ghosts, but also uses his fake con-man skill of charming people and being a smooth talker to help people fix their problems rather than have them rely on a psychic for help. He also acts as a mentor to Mob, not on how to be a better psychic, but on how to mature into a good, capable person. Because according to Reigen “Having psychic powers is just a skill. Some people can run fast, some people can can sing well, some people are good at studying, some people are funny, and some people have psychic powers.”
Now if only the assortment of Cult leaders, Ghosts, Secret organizations and Powerful psychics trying to take over the world could leave him alone.
Pros:
A subversion of the “I must get stronger!” shounen story where the character is already the strongest and needs to focus on being a better person instead.
Probably the best animated show to come out in years
Good uplifting morals
A wacky off-beat art style and sense of humour
Genuinely complex and 3 dimensional characters who are likeable
Really relatable in many ways
Cons:
I can’t think of any tbh
Then we have anime I have on my “to watch” list and come highly recommended but I haven’t seen yet. But I want to recommend them anyway
A Place Further Than The Universe (2018)
a “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” show.
Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder for the world around her, Mari Tamaki has always dreamt of what lies beyond the reaches of the universe. However, despite harboring such large aspirations on the inside, her fear of the unknown and anxiety over her own possible limitations have always held her back from chasing them. But now, in her second year of high school, Mari is more determined than ever to not let any more of her youth go to waste. Still, her fear continues to prevent her from taking that ambitious step forward—that is, until she has a chance encounter with a girl who has grand dreams of her own. Spurred by her mother's disappearance, Shirase Kobuchizawa has been working hard to fund her trip to Antarctica. Despite facing doubt and ridicule from virtually everyone, Shirase is determined to embark on this expedition to search for her mother in a place further than the universe itself. Inspired by Shirase's resolve, Mari jumps at the chance to join her. Soon, their efforts attract the attention of the bubbly Hinata Miyake, who is eager to stand out, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a polite girl from a high class background. Together, they set sail toward the frozen south.
The Promised Neverland (2019) (warning for violence and gore)
Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family... never to be heard from again. However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama.
Zombieland Saga (2018)
There’s a good chance you might have heard or seen this one floating around tumblr as its one of the really big, really popular anime to have come out that features a trans main character written and presented in a positive light.
Zombieland Saga is both a satirical parody of Idol anime, a complete embracing of what makes idol anime enjoyable, and a criticism of how the Idol industry treat women and young girls. A lot of the girls in the idol group are the complete opposite of what is considered a “good Idol” from one girl being trans, one girl having been an Oiran many many years ago (a historic proffession for women where they play instruments, perform tea ceremonies and entertain paying guests. As well as being very high class prostitutes) as well as debating and comparing the ideal of an Idol as they were seen in the 80s versus the modern interpretation.
Zombieland Saga is at both times the complete antithesis of everything an Idol anime should be, while also being one of the best examples of the genre at the same time. It also features really well written characters with emotional depth and arcs to them and boasts a lot of good humour to boot.
Yuru Camp△ (2018)
Another “Cute Girls Doing Cute things” anime
While the perfect getaway for most girls her age might be a fancy vacation with their loved ones, Rin Shima's ideal way of spending her days off is camping alone at the base of Mount Fuji. From pitching her tent to gathering firewood, she has always done everything by herself, and has no plans of leaving her little solitary world. However, what starts off as one of Rin's usual camping sessions somehow ends up as a surprise get-together for two when the lost Nadeshiko Kagamihara is forced to take refuge at her campsite. Originally intending to see the picturesque view of Mount Fuji for herself, Nadeshiko's plans are disrupted when she ends up falling asleep partway to her destination. Alone and with no other choice, she seeks help from the only other person nearby. Despite their hasty introductions, the two girls nevertheless enjoy the chilly night together, eating ramen and conversing while the campfire keeps them warm. And even after Nadeshiko's sister finally picks her up later that night, both girls silently ponder the possibility of another camping trip together.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (2018)
You’re gonna look at this gif and that title and think this is some Light-Novel sexy fantasy wish fullfillment bullshit, but I absolutely assure you it’s not.
The rare and inexplicable Puberty Syndrome is thought of as a myth. It is a rare disease which only affects teenagers, and its symptoms are so supernatural that hardly anyone recognizes it as a legitimate occurrence. However, high school student Sakuta Azusagawa knows from personal experience that it is very much real, and happens to be quite prevalent in his school. Mai Sakurajima is a third-year high school student who gained fame in her youth as a child actress, but recently halted her promising career for reasons unknown to the public. With an air of unapproachability, she is well known throughout the school, but none dare interact with her—that is until Sakuta sees her wandering the library in a bunny girl costume. Despite the getup, no one seems to notice her, and after confronting her, he realizes that she is another victim of Puberty Syndrome. Mai’s unapproachability and air of not wanting to interact with people has manifested that it is now borderline impossible for people to physically notice her. Or in some cases see her at all. As Sakuta tries to help Mai through her predicament, his actions bring him into contact with more girls afflicted with the elusive disease.
Bunny Girl Senpai is an anime that deals with Societal pressures, especially as they apply to teenagers, as well as being a criticism of the Japanese mentality of “not rocking the boat” and in dutifully conforming and falling in line with what society dictates is “proper behavior”. It has the running theme that this mentality of just accepting the way things are and not doing anything to change it is unhealthy, and does more harm than good.
Dororo (2019) (warning for violence and Gore)
A samurai lord has bartered away his newborn son's organs to forty-eight demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield. Yet, the abandoned infant survives thanks to a medicine man who equips him with primitive prosthetics—lethal ones with which the wronged son will use to hunt down the multitude of demons to reclaim his body one piece at a time, before confronting his father. On his journeys the young hero encounters an orphan who claims to be the greatest thief in Japan.
An anime adaptation of one of Osamu Tezuka’s manga, but deciding to go for an updated, darker art style to match its mature tone.
Dororo is currently still airing but so far reviews are extremely high.
Anyway I hope those are enough to give you at least one new show to check out.

mp100 x silm crossover
Sorry to everyone who sent me actually decent mp100 prompts, this criminal is the only person who understands me
“Welcome, cousin!”
The king of Nargothrond kept a simple state—although something about the chiseled surface of the throne gave the appearance of a once highly-decorated object that had since been defaced of all its decorations. The king’s person glittered more fiercely than candle trees and mirrored tiles together could explain, but Shigeo had been told that it was usual for the Noldor to shine. Since Shigeo himself had been known to give off a steady light in dusky groves, especially when it might help Ritsu sleep, he wasn’t offended. He was just confused. First the king’s hunting master had run him down on the great plains and dragged him here in bonds, and now the king was calling him “cousin.” Maybe the ropes were ceremonial. The Noldor were also known to be eccentric. “Have we met?” Shigeo said politely.
The king’s face changed shape a few times. Fine details were hard to spot through the dazzle, but it definitely got longer—oh, that was his mouth opening—and then squashed small. And then relaxed back to its old shape with a convincing naturalness, like what happened when you dropped a cat slightly after it wanted to be dropped. “That’s right,” he said. “You saved me, during the Great Burning. Don’t you remember?”
Shigeo had only been outside of Doriath twice—once now, to save Ritsu, and once before due to a bet between Beleg and Mablung which everyone agreed had been taken much too far, although he didn’t think even Beleg could have been expected to foresee all the lava. However, he hadn’t talked to very many people while fording the rivers of fire, so this could only be…
“Celegorm?”
“Celeborn. Close enough,” the king of Nargothrond said hastily. “My friends call me Teru.”
“Is that Quenya? Is it short for something?”
“If we’re friends, it hardly matters what it’s short for, don’t you think?”
“Okay. What?”
The king jumped down from the throne and telekinetically removed Shigeo’s bonds, which Shigeo had forgotten to do. “When I saved you,” Shigeo said, slowly. “You weren’t the king of Nargothrond then, were you?”
Teru stared at Shigeo’s feet, now covered in a heap of rope. “I meant to ask. It’s such a pleasure to see you, but what brings you to our beautiful kingdom?”
“I’m looking for my little brother Ritsu. He came here to collect on the debt you owe me for saving your life in the fire.”
“Your brother? But we’ve had no royal elven visitors—have we, my lords?” A ripple of uncertain laughter ran through the ranks of courtiers on either side of the aisle.
“He’s human.“
“What?”
“He’s adopted. His real father was a great hero of men, but after the defeat in the north, his family sent him to us for fostering. He’s my little brother.”
*
Then, for some reason, Shigeo was placed under house arrest. It wouldn’t have been bad, except that he was starting to get really worried about Ritsu. At home no one would explain what had happened in the days leading up to Ritsu’s disappearance, when Shigeo was gone on a diplomatic mission to the Ents. Here, no one would explain anything at all, and they kept smiling at him and almost touching him—not with evil intent, which Shigeo would have been better prepared for, but with an awed civility, like courtiers at Menegroth reserved for Hírilorn. “Just think! a wedding, after all these years of siege!” he heard the laundress say after sneaking in to collect his old clothes. It wouldn’t have been very difficult to put the guards to sleep and leave, but the problem was he had no idea how to get back to the surface. He was deep in the tunnels and had a terrible sense of direction. Worse, if he blasted his way through the earth he would probably collapse the secret kingdom, killing everyone.
But he couldn’t let Ritsu die. He was starting give serious consideration to the merits of cracking a seam in the roof when he heard, outside the great doors to his chamber, a dog bark sharply.
He hadn’t seen an animal since the hunting master took her hounds away—to punish or reward, he didn’t know. He went over straightaway and opened the hatch. Outside stood a dog as unlike the sleek black hounds as could be imagined: for one thing, it was sort of brownish-yellow, and for another it resembled nothing so much as an overgrown fox with a fat face and round white spots on its brown cheeks. This motley combination of features immediately endeared it to Shigeo, who liked round things.
The dog yawned. It yawned for a long time, giving Shigeo a noseful of its fishy breath, and the way it yawned sounded almost like a human sighing from nervousness: “Haaaa.” It yawned again. “Haa, haaa.” Then it said, “Hey. Kid.”
Shigeo fell back on his bottom. He’d heard animals speak before—but not in Sindarin, with that strange accent. “Don’t be scared,” said the dog. “Look at me! I can talk. Weird, I know. It’s extremely weird, actually, and I’ve never done it before. But I think I might be a natural? Let me introduce myself. My name is Dimp—Reigen. Reigen Arataka, Miracle Hound with the Max Spirituality Level of 131. My origins are unknown, my divine lineage mysterious, but a prophecy at my birth predicts that I will only speak three times before I die. Obviously you, having eyes, might see the problem with this. Up to today, I’ve successfully avoided unnecessary remarks, but there’s only so long a dog can go without winning an argument. Enough is enough. But! I refuse to accept my fate! I’ve calculated that the wording of the prophecy leaves it ambiguous as to what constitutes a single act of ‘speaking,’ but that it strongly implies that by speaking it means I will have spoken, i.e. past perfect, i.e. completed action, i.e. if I never stop talking I’ll technically never have talked. Per the prophecy. Quod erat demonstrandum, so long as I keep talking, I will never die. So that’s fine. What’s your name? Wait, don’t answer that, the natural give and take of man-to-man conversation also threatens the completed speech act status quote. I know your name, anyway, I heard all about you at dinner. Shigeo, right? Nod if I’m right. Shigeo, do you want to escape?”
#Anonymous#no one expects the fannish inquisition#i'm. not tagging this.#I'LL GET TO THE OTHER PROMPTS SOON#anyway yes this is a fusion where luthien never met beren but DID leave doriath to hunt turin down thank u so much for not asking

Being Dishonor. 2: What is your character’s favorite memory?/3: What is your character’s least favorite memory?/4: Does anyone have a crush on your character? Is your character aware of this?Yasu has quite a few fangirls actually (this is what happens when you‘re the offspring of two very attractive people). He does know about it and feels rather uneasy about it since he can‘t return the feelings but does also not want to hurt them. He just tries his best to be nice and friendly with them and makes it worse. 5: Describe your character’s dream date.Picnic on a beautiful clearing in the Forest. Preferably at night at full moon when the fireflies come out :D 6: What is your character’s sexual orientation?straight7: How does your character feel about their name?He likes it and kind off adores the meaning that‘s attached to it (Yasu means something in the way of Peace/Peaceful or quiet) since peace and quietness is something that he values a lot. 8: Does your character hate anyone? Why?It‘s really hard to earn Yasu‘s hate since he is rather forgiving and also very calm. The best way to get him to hate you is hurting any of his friends. One name that certainly makes Yasu grit his teeth is the name of upper classman Shigeo Eizan. Yasu absolutely cannot stand this person, which is much about the fact that Shigeo is not leaving Chieko alone. 9: How does your character feel about religion? He‘s Buddhist and takes quite a bunch of it quite serious. He would never force his beliefs on anonye else though.10. Would your character ever kill someone?Lol….No11: How did your character meet their best friend?Yasu and Chieko just always knew each other since they‘re babies, due to how close they are. So you could say…? In the hospital? A few hours after Chieko was born and Shun and Ryoko came along to visit.12: How would/does your character feel about roller coasters? He‘s not very fond of them to be honest. And Yasu will be burning with strong, dark jealousy. But he keeps it hidden as he does not want to hurt anybody and he knows that he‘s being irrational.20: What is the most surprising thing about your character? He‘s able to laugh. It often surprises a lot of people how competitive and passionate he actually is.21: Is your character flexible?Depends.22: What is the worst thing your character has ever done?/23: Is your character morally gray or black or white? It‘s more of a black or white (but not entirely) 24: What prejudices does your character have?Barely any. He‘s very talented and has already created beautiful crafts. Also it relaxes him. 31: What social media would your character use? What‘s App and Twitter. At some point Hideyoshi would talk him into Instagram though.32: What does your character look like?
33: In what ways is your character like you?I think we share the same appreciation for nature!34: What is cliche about your character?/35: What is unique about your character?/36: Does anyone want to harm your character?Yes. 37: Do people have justified grudges against your character?Shigeo, maybe….but really just maybe. I mean Shigeo is after all a cunt so Yasu does have right to to dislike him.38: What role does your character play in their story?Reeeead it! Would your character ever kill someone?Nope11: How did your character meet their best friend?Yasu and Chieko just always knew each other since they‘re babies, due to how close they are. So you could say…? In the hospital? A few hours after Chieko was born and Shun and Ryoko came along to visit.12: How would/does your character feel about roller coasters?Depends on how the rollercoaster looks like. If it looks safe in her eyes, she would not mind to ride and will also be excited about it. But if the roller coaster has like 3 loopings or so, she will not have a great time and be mostly worried. 13: What would your character die for?Friends….I guess?14: What is the cutest thing your character has ever done?/15: What music genre would your character listen to?Well, she‘s very into everything smooth and soothing. Chieko is barely a spontaneous person and always freaks out about changes in plans. 22: What is the worst thing your character has ever done?/23: Is your character morally gray or black or white?More Black and White. 24: What prejudices does your character have?Sometimes she almost automatically assumes the intelligence of a person based on his appearance. But she does not see working in a restaurant as a necessity. 43: What is your character insecure about? Her looks.44: What is your character proud of?Her research skills. 45: What would your character change about themselves?More confidence46: Would you want to trade places with your character?Nope, I would not survive on a cooking school ;w;47: What fandoms would your character be in?If her Historic Dramas have fandoms…I could also see her being into Avengers.48: How would your character type?Atriculated, Full sentences, the only shortening she uses is „tf“49: How does your character stand politically? The middle! But she is complaining because it‘s Chieko. 53: What clubs would your character join? She‘s part of the Enomoto-Seminar.54: What is the saddest thing about your character’s life?/55: Would your character do the Ice Bucket Challenge?No56: What’s one of your character’s quirks? She adjusts her glasses a lot. She‘s also a little bit of a mood-swinger and often exaggerates. Her voice also usually getsone octave higher when she‘s upset or very excited. 57: How would your character feel about feminism? It had huge importance in the past and is still important today. But she does think that some of the arguments don‘t really make any sense. And she‘s against all sort of extremes.58: Is your character dorky or more athletic?A little bit more dorky I guess.59: What is your least favorite thing about your character? Here and there she feels a little inconsistent. I am working on it.

If you enjoy analyzing the possibility of Teruki canonically being some sort of sociopath and/or taking a look at the more violent aspects of mp100 though a ONE-esque humorous lens, suitiblyskippy has the content you need! They’ve written a variety of oneshots, drabbles, case fics, 5 times 1 time fics, and even a Gintama Crossover! On to the individual works!
tomorrow isn't always another day
Kageyama "Mob" Shigeo & Reigen Arataka. Case Fic, Time Loop. Completed. Rated: T. Word Count: 18,000.
“It’s like Reigen’s been waiting for the question. He stops dead on the pavement, grips Mob by the shoulders, and stares down into his eyes with an expression as haunted as though every ghost the pair of them has ever exorcised has taken up residence behind it. “Mob,” he says. “Mob,” he says again. “Tell me, Mob. Look at me and tell me. Tell me truthfully. Do I look cursed to you?”
Mob looks at him, and tells him truthfully. “No.”
“Well, you didn’t look very long,” says Reigen. “Let’s just stand here for a moment, like so, and you can have another look, a nice long look, and really think about it...”
(There's nothing strange about being called back to exorcise the same haunted photocopier six days in a row. It must just be a very haunted photocopier.)”
endless new joys and fresh wonders
Teruki & His Mother. Crack Taken Seriously, Kid Fic, Backstory Fic. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 3,300.
“Her son was, perhaps, cuter than the average, and admittedly he was endearing, in his own burping, dribbling two-month-old kind of way. That much, she could accept. That much was reasonable, for a new mother who’d never expected that her baby would be capable of smiling up at her so radiantly before he was even three weeks old. But suggesting it was anything more than that would be absurd. She knew it would be absurd. She reminded herself frequently that it would be absurd. The very concept of a two-month-old child being in any way outstanding was in itself absurd.
The problem, though, was that all available evidence suggested otherwise.
(Raising the world's most inexplicably talented and charismatic baby wasn't always easy.)”
the past is over and done with and irrelevant now
5 Things 1 Thing. Character Study, Comedy. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 2,800.
“Honesty is a virtue, and virtue isn’t something that can just be acquired overnight. It took Teru at least a week to really master it, and another couple of days after that to get the hang of some of its more advanced techniques, and even now he likes to keep himself in constant practice.
(Becoming a good person is a challenge, but every challenge is a chance to overachieve.)”
[written for the unbelievably beautiful prompt: '5 times teru was a good person, and 1 time he was a good person according to all evidence that is accepted in common law jurisdictions'.]
crossovers are always a risky proposition
Gintama Crossover, Prompt Compilation. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 5,700.
“"Who’s to say how fast the merchandising opportunities will dry up once we’re out of Jump? Who’s to say how rapidly those thirteen years of frozen serialisation stasis time will hit us, or how much hair I’ll lose when I suddenly hit middle-age overnight? No, it’s best to capitalise on our popularity now,” concludes Gintoki. “Strike while the iron’s hot and the anime’s still on air, that’s always been the Yorozuya way. This is the perfect time for a crossover.”
(A collection of MP100 vs Gintama crossover fics, with a mixed variety of characters, word counts, and levels of reckless brutality against the fourth wall.)”
cool psychic tricks for getting bloodstains out
Kageyama Ritsu & Suzuki Shou. Drabble, Angst, Comedy--how do you even tag for covering up a murder???? Warnings for Blood and questionable guilt in homicide. Competed. Rated: G. Word Count: 750.
““No, I get it,” says Shou. He’s using his reassuring voice. “I totally get it. You’ve got nothing to hide. I mean, I totally get that. But we’d probably better hide it anyway. You know what I mean? Cos it’s probably not gonna look great if anyone, like – finds out. Even though you totally didn’t do it,” Shou adds quickly, and gives Ritsu a brief but overpoweringly intense look of loyal supportiveness.”
hardly had the time for introductions
Post 7th Division Arc, Confrontations, Drabble, Teru Maybe Murdered That Fire Guy, We Will Probably Never Know For Sure. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 750.
“He corners the kid while he’s alone with his water bottle, recovering from the exertion of his latest round of offensive telekinesis on an implausibly massive scale and still breathing hard, his shoulders heaving. There’s more than enough space for Sakurai to sit beside him. He doesn’t. He pushes his hands into his pockets and says, “Just thought you might want to know: Miyagawa didn’t make it.”
The kid glances up at him. His face is flushed; his tufty hair is slicked wet and nearly flat by sweat. “Who?” he says politely.”
blasting open all the rich seams of possibility
Kageyama Ritsu & Suzuki Shou. 5 Times 1 Time, Developing Friendship. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 3,900.
“If Shou gets the hang of astral projection, he can move onto possession. If he gets the hang of possession, he can hammer through Ritsu’s psychic guard-wall with sheer brute strength of will, take control of Ritsu’s body, and pull off so many hilarious pranks at Ritsu’s expense that just thinking about it gives Shou the jolt of pure, energised determination that he needs to wrench free his soul, spit it through his teeth, and send himself catapulting victoriously into the sky like a glorious psychic firework.
(Being best friends is just as hazardous for Shou and Ritsu themselves as it is for everyone else around them.)”
[written for her prompt: 'five times shou left ritsu's unconscious and/or mutilated body out on display for mob to see, and one time ritsu unexpectedly regained consciousness halfway through and demanded to know what the fuck was happening'] More Information in Authors Notes.
a slightly more miraculous miracle
Hanazawa Teruki/Kageyama "Mob" Shigeo, Kageyama Ritsu & Suzuki Shou. Case Fic, Gen Fic, Telepathy. Ongoing. Rated: G. Word Count: 5,200.
““Rumour has it that something impossible’s happened. Something that could never have happened. That shouldn’t have been able to happen.” In a single slick move Mezato produces a tiny voice recorder from an inside pocket, flips it open and active, and holds it up before Mob’s mouth to ask him, in a tone of devastating intensity: “Do you know anything about… a miracle, Mob-kun?”
Mob doesn’t hesitate. “We had maths homework to hand in,” he says. “But now we don’t have to. We don’t even have to go to the lesson.”
(The sun is shining, the birds are singing, Salt Middle School has been closed by an unexplained miracle, and the only thing wrong in Spice City is the fact that nothing is even slightly wrong at all.)”

Oh boy~! I hope you like Mob angst, because man did I create a lot of Mob angst! >8D
Mob Psycho 100/Firefly Crossover AU
(This is just a brainstorming thing, not meant to be taken as a finished piece. Even if it is 3.6K words...)
Everyone is five years older than in canon. So Mob’s 19, Ritsu is 18, and Reigen is 33.
Arataka Reigen is the captain of the transport spaceship S&S, or the Spirits and Such. He prefers keeping a low profile after a shady past that he’s since tried to clean up. Has an entire crew under his command, none of whom take him that seriously. He still dads them relentlessly. Teruki is first mate, came on board after Reigen helped him out of a tight spot, is surprisingly good at ordering people to do stuff, isn’t a dick about his powers after the new pilot kicked his ass. Shou is pilot, Serizawa is the medic/cook; both are powerful espers that came on board after Shou convinced Seri to run away with him and hijacked the ship to escape, Reigen subsequently hiring them after finding out Shou was a damn good pilot and that Seri needed like so much therapy. Tome is on communications, who took the job on the condition that she be allowed to attempt making contact with aliens (Reigen doesn’t ask). Mezato is a traveling journalist that pays Reigen to let her stay on board and hunt for news stories, but he suspects she’s just a nosy busybody. Onigawara is a mercenary Reigen hired after one too many scuffles, but now has even more to deal with thanks to the guy’s temper. Musashi is a mechanic with experience in fixing up farm equipment, but can pretty easily extrapolate it to an entire spaceship (Reigen isn’t sure that’s how that works, but hey the ship hasn’t exploded yet). Dimple’s a questionable preacher they picked up after he got run out of town, claims to be a priest but acts like he’s got a god-complex or something (might be an alien brain slug). They’re kind of a disaster, but with Reigen’s people skills, he’s able to avert the worst of it.
They’re given a relatively easy job when they take a young man on board, named Ritsu Kageyama. Also with him is an unusually large suitcase, which he says contains “his entire life”. He just asks to be taken as far from the planet as possible but doesn’t elaborate. Reigen can tell something’s up, but doesn’t have the heart to bother the guy, who is clearly going through some bad shit.
Not a day or two into their voyage, the crew finds out that the government has put out a bounty on Ritsu for stealing their property. Ritsu denies doing anything wrong and they decide to search his luggage for whatever he stole. He flips out at this and tries to stop them, but it’s too late. The large suitcase opens to reveal it holds a stasis chamber containing a sleeping young man. They’re horrified and free the guy, thinking that Ritsu is some kind of human trafficker until he yells at them that he’s trying to save his brother. The sleeping man wakes up then, but something’s clearly wrong with him in how he holds himself like a terrified animal. He seems to realize he’s somewhere unfamiliar and curls up, screaming and crying. Ritsu comes in, covering his brother with his coat and trying to soothe the crying man, now clinging to him desperately. The crew is polite enough to back off and give the two some space.
Soon after, Ritsu and his brother are given a chance to explain what’s going on. Ritsu’s brother is silent this entire time, curled up clutching at Ritsu’s side, staring off into space with glassy eyes, like he’s not there at all. Ritsu starts by telling them that everything he’s done was to save his older brother, Shigeo. All of this has to do with the fact that he is an esper and a particularly powerful one at that. Despite the powers, the two grew up pretty normally until his brother was invited to study at a special Academy for espers. Shigeo took them up on it and left home. At first things seemed normal, the brothers messaging each other regularly. But after a while, Shigeo’s messages started to taper off. The few he did manage to get out were short and often about his exhaustion and the trials he was being put through. Then for a long stretch, Ritsu didn’t hear anything from him. Until he receives a bizarre message from Shigeo’s email, claiming that his brother is dead. For some reason, it’s signed by a “Mob”. It takes Ritsu a while to do some digging, turning up results that made him more and more fearful for Shigeo’s life. So Ritsu left to rescue him, dropping everything to break into the facility and get Shigeo out. By the time he got there, he found his brother already in the stasis chamber. He only had enough time to grab the entire thing before hiding it in the suitcase and fleeing to the spaceport.
Which leads to now. Ritsu knows he doesn’t stand a chance against the S&S crew if they decide to turn them in and has resigned himself to that fate. To everyone’s surprise, Reigen declares that they’ll do no such thing. In fact, everyone’s under orders that they’re to do everything they can to protect the brothers. They’re both victims and Reigen can’t possibly give the abused back to their abusers. They can stay.
The crew is less than pleased at this and start yelling at Reigen until he makes them settle down. Ritsu is distrustful of course, but a quiet whimper from Shigeo gets him to back down. Reigen orders Seri to take the two to larger quarters, while he discusses things with the others. Teru is pretty against the whole thing, knowing they can’t hide the brothers forever. It’s only a matter of time before one of them slips and all of them land in hot water for harboring fugitives. Reigen points out that Ritsu is a fugitive for rescuing his brother from said law, which referred to Shigeo as their “property”. Reigen may be greedy at times, but he’s not heartless. He also doesn’t want to admit that the sight of poor Shigeo struck a nerve in him.
As the Kageyama brothers get settled, there comes the question of what they plan on doing. Ritsu’s plan was to flee to the outer reaches and maybe start a new life there. But with the bounty on him, he’s not sure that’s a workable plan anymore. So Reigen offers them a place on the ship. Any skill set they have would definitely be put to use. Ritsu hesitantly says he’d been studying medicine before upending his life. “Medic,” Reigen declares, “Which would be great, because oh my god Seri just can’t deal with blood.” With a lot of reservation, Ritsu accepts and the job is sealed. As for Shigeo… Reigen decides that he’s infirm and can’t be expected to work yet, much to Ritsu’s relief and zero response from Shigeo.
Things settle down in their own weird way. There’s shenanigans on various planets, Reigen scraping through bad situations through his sweaty charisma, things get shot at, lots of running, like how most of Firefly went.
As time goes on, the crew observes a lot about the two. Ritsu is normal enough, maybe a bit naive in some regards and a bit too aggressive in others. By contrast, Shigeo doesn’t speak at all, doesn’t make eye contact, and is quiet and submissive. He’s a bit perplexing. He always looks haggard, bags under his eyes, hair set in an overgrown bowl-cut pattern. He generally goes around barefoot, preferring oversized knitted turtlenecks and sweaters to hide himself in. He wanders the halls aimlessly, often reaching out to touch the walls. Sometimes he’ll stare at a spot for hours without moving. Other times, he seems to be listening for something only he can hear, sometimes even humming along to some strange tune. They tend to find him curled up in odd places, sometimes observing the others as they go about their duties, sometimes blankly staring into space. The more… interesting times are when Shigeo gets flashbacks of some kind, triggering his powers spiraling out of control. These episodes leave him screaming in the eye of a hurricane of objects until Ritsu can get to him and calm him down. Because of this, Ritsu spends most of his time at his brother’s side, trying to coax him into talking, eating, or calmness. He often glares at anyone who dares approach them. The few times the two are separate, Reigen finds himself gravitating to Shigeo. He talks to the guy, just sharing stories or offering words of encouragement. Shigeo never responds, but Reigen can sense something in him paying attention and keeps it up. Then Shigeo has an episode without Ritsu, leaving Reigen to dive in and calm him down. Something about it works and he’s able to comfort Shigeo until his brother arrives.
Not long after, Reigen finds a lone Shigeo huddled in his bunk of all places. A baffled Reigen asks what he’s doing there, not thinking he’ll actually get a response. “It smells safe,” Shigeo quietly answers. Reigen realizes it’s because of the incense and candles he kept from his old job and goes on to explain when the fact that Shigeo just spoke to him finally hits him. He has no idea what to make of this, but if his bunk smells safe then, sure, Shigeo can stay if he likes. Before dozing off, Shigeo corrects him. “My name is Mob. Shigeo is dead.”
With that bizarre proclamation, Reigen confronts Ritsu about it. However, Ritsu gets mad that Shigeo actually spoke to Reigen of all people. Reigen doesn’t see what the big deal is, but Ritsu tells him that his brother hadn’t said a thing since he was let out. Reigen is left even more confused, as he thought they had been talking. With some more prodding, Ritsu admits that he has no idea how to really take care of his brother, able to tend to physical needs but not mental or emotional ones. Nor does he know just what the Academy did to make Shigeo this way. He knew his brother was autistic, always having trouble socializing and interacting, but it was never like this. Neither did he claim he was dead nor refer to himself as Mob (which is what Reigen refers to him as from then on). (how do i conclude this section i have no idea 0_0;;;)
To Reigen’s surprise, Mob keeps turning up in Reigen’s quarters no matter how well it’s locked. Mob is often found sleeping or blankly staring at the walls. Reigen doesn’t have the heart to kick him out. Though Mob doesn’t say anything, Reigen gets the sense that the young man keeps coming to Reigen’s room to get away from his brother, whose overbearing side has been coming up more often.
Afterwards, the others begin finding Mob in their personal spaces. He seems to particularly resonate with the other espers: Teru finds something grating about his presence, Shou is more fascinated with him and tends to poke and prod at Mob more, while Seri appreciates his quiet, non-judgmental presence.
However the thing that breaks Mob out of his silence is when Claw rears its ugly head. During one of his more lucid moments, Ritsu manages to coax Mob out to explore the spaceport the ship has docked at. Things seem to be going fine until Mob freaks out at the sight of a weird triangle symbol painted on a door. He runs like his life depends on it, quickly losing Ritsu and getting lost in the crowd. Ritsu freaks out of course and enlists the help of the crew to find his brother. It’s Teru who comes across Mob huddled in an alleyway. Mob is shaking, muttering something about Claw searching and finding him. Teru doesn’t have time for this and hauls Mob up to leave, but are stopped by a hooded figure. The figure tells them to come quietly or else things will get ugly fast. Teru has no intention of listening to some thug, but realizes something might be wrong when Mob desperately begs him not go with the figure. It’s because Teru’s guard is up that he’s able to fend off the figure’s sudden very psychically charged attack. The figure turns out to be Koyama, who intends to bring the two psychics in. A fight breaks out with Teru on the offense and Mob on the defense. The fight eventually gets out of hand enough that Shou and Serizawa come in to help. Their arrival is enough to freak Koyama out into fleeing, recognizing the two as powerful espers. (chase down and capture Koyama? give them time to dump him in a jail and leave Claw wondering what’s going on. otherwise he gives their location to base, meaning they get chased) No one’s entirely sure what’s going on until Reigen drags everyone out into a group meeting, deciding it’s finally time for Shou and Serizawa to spill their backstory (he didn’t ask before to be polite).
Like in canon, Shou is fighting back against his father, still Claw’s leader. Only this time, his father knows about it because Shou ran off with his second-in-command, Serizawa, who reluctantly went with Shou because he thought the kid needed protection. Since joining the S&S crew, they’ve been laying low, waiting for a good chance to start making battle preparations. In that time, Serizawa’s realized the error of his ways and is trying to do right by Reigen and Shou. Both of them go on to explain Claw.
In this universe, Claw is sneakier, running in smaller proxy operations but has roots in places like the government already. Their other major asset is the Psychic Academy that Shigeo attended. In the front, the Academy trains and hones a psychic’s abilities. Most people have super weak powers but do genuinely get a lot out of it. Mitsuura enthusiastically runs that part of the operation but honestly has no idea what the darker side of the Academy is up to. The stronger psychics get a completely different story. These are the ones who are made into pawns for Claw to use in their plot to come into power. Otherwise they’re experimented on in a bid to strengthen their abilities to a dangerous degree.
Teru perks up at this, stating he was invited to the Academy once as well, but opted not to. (why? wanted to stay somewhere familiar? wanted to keep hold on his little gang?) Mob just comments that he was smart not to go.
“They do bad things to you.”
With a little prodding, Mob finds the words to explain himself.
Mob insists that he isn’t Shigeo and that the real Shigeo died. That Mob is just a thing inhabiting Shigeo’s body, nothing more. Why he calls himself Mob is because he’s “just a face in a mob, [he’s] no one, a nothing.” He knows a lot about Shigeo, who he was and what he was like. He knew that he was an esper prodigy and the Academy took advantage of that. But they went too far. They put something in him, something that was never meant to be. It killed Shigeo and Mob was born from his shattered remains. Now it’s just the two of them in there, Mob and the Thing. Mob’s been doing his best to keep his distance from the Thing, but it’s hard to do when he’s barely functional. Mob can’t quite explain the Thing either, describing it as a black hole with its own mind trapped in his head.
This is all a bit much to swallow at once, so Reigen breaks them up for now and promises to come back to think of a plan.
Ritsu hasn’t been taking this well, hurt and confused by what his brother is saying. While his brother is obviously not dead, Ritsu’s not sure he can handle losing the person he was. He insists on calling his brother by his real name. Mob can only sigh.
Though their relationship is strained, Ritsu resolves to do everything he can for his brother. Mob tends to shrink away from this. He insists that he’s not Shigeo, therefore: not Ritsu’s brother. But Ritsu is able to get through to him by reasoning that if Mob was formed out of pieces of Shigeo, it means that Shigeo can’t entirely be gone. But this isn’t about that, Ritsu admits. This is about who Mob is. If Mob formed in Shigeo’s body, then that makes it Mob’s body too. And Mob’s body is blood brothers with Ritsu. As far as Ritsu is concerned, Mob IS his brother, whether he likes it or not. Mob isn’t sure how to feel about this until Ritsu hugs him, telling Mob that he isn’t “a nobody, a nothing”, Mob has family and that means he IS something, someONE. Though he tries not to, Mob breaks down crying.
(Presumably, they go in to take care of the Claw problem, possibly first with 7th Div. cell before thwarting the World Domination arc. Blow open giant government secret like in Firefly/Serenity canon? Would probably have to break into Academy again to figure out what they did to Mob, learns about the Thing in detail here. No idea where other elements would go, like Mogami arc. How would space ghosts work? Maybe Mogami arc could be a haunted spaceship story, replace Reavers with evil spirits. Broccoli arc???? HOW DO EITHER STORY END? HOW WOULD THIS END??)
Stuff that would probably only be hinted at in-story, but can be fully explained here:
Mob is either Shigeo gone insane or a new personality entirely. Both are plausible.
The Thing is ???%. While it’s still a mystery in canon apparently just Mob’s powers set to survival mode (something to do with a Japanese idiom?), here ???% is a tiny scrap of what can only be described as a cosmic entity. It’s a small, inky black, strange free-flowing blob, lit up with intermittent glowing white spots. When its discoverers noticed it reacted strongly to espers, it was taken to the Academy to see what it would do. They thought it could be used to give a massive boost to psychic powers. It was implanted in Shigeo to test it out, but his powers went haywire and leveled the building. When they found him at the epicenter, Shigeo was a shivering, crying wreck. It would be the only thing he could do for a while.
The implantation of the Thing shattered Shigeo’s mind as it forcibly made room for itself in him. The Thing did not originally have a mind of its own. But when Shigeo broke, it absorbed enough pieces of him that it gained self-awareness, changing it from a blob into a shadowy copy of Shigeo. With pieces of humanity in it, the Thing understood human thoughts and emotions. While the Thing could simply have taken over Shigeo’s body completely, it didn’t out of regret for the consciousness that originally was there. Instead, it nudged the bits of Shigeo that were left into a new entity entirely. Sadly not enough was there to create a functioning person, instead the new consciousness was marred with fear and pain. It would come to name itself Mob.
To the Academy scientists, the procedure damaged Shigeo’s cognitive abilities, leaving him unable to recognize his own name or even understand human speech. Instead, he acted almost like a terrified animal half the time. The worst came in the form of screaming episodes, where he seemed to see something terrifying no one else could (it was the Thing manifesting in its vessel’s mind, curious about the entity it shared a body with; it didn’t know what to make of the screaming and crying, so it kept its distance). Only twice did lucidity briefly return: once to ask for pants; the other was to beg them to stop hurting him. The Academy tried many different unsuccessful treatments on him, steadily getting less and less humane until it became more of an exercise in torture than anything else. Ultimately, the Academy deemed Shigeo too unstable to continue making use of, opting to put him in stasis until they could figure out what happened. However, both minds overhear this and in a rare moment of joint lucidity, they secretly send out a message to their brother for help. Afterward, the doctors have to physically fight Shigeo to get him sedated. Shigeo is put into a small stasis chamber and set aside, where he was supposed to sleep indefinitely. It takes a while, but Ritsu is able to break in and is horrified that his brother is in a freaking box. And things go from there.
Mob hates being alive. He doesn’t want to be here. He’s convinced his existence is a mistake, one that he constantly regrets. Most of this pain comes from simple self-hatred, that he’s alive in a body that doesn’t belong to him and never did, that he unfairly stole Shigeo’s life. It’s made worse when Ritsu expects Mob to act like Shigeo but he never can, feeling like he’s incapable of being a real person. There’s a lot of crying on his part, driven by intense despair. It takes time, but Mob slowly stabilizes as he comes to terms with his existence, characterized by increasing moments of speech and lucidity.

The team has always been the most popular, with most manga and animation films on professional baseball in Japan usually featuring heroes from the Giants. The team is likened to the New York Yankees, and it is often said that there are two kinds Japanese – pro-Giants and anti-Giants. Not a baseball enthusiast myself, I was born and raised in the Kanto Plain, and therefore a Giants fan throughout my childhood, just like most of my friends. I proudly wore a G-marked shirt and ball cap, cried when Shigeo Nagashima retired from the Giants in 1974, and was overcome with joy when slugger Sadaharu Oh hit his then-record breaking 756th homerun in 1977. Since Hideo Nomo became a historical success with the Dodgers in the mid-90s, star players such as Ichiro, Hideki Matsui and Koji Uehara have taken their world-class capabilities to the MLB one after another. The NPB has become somewhat of a minor league for MLB, and those players who have succeeded in the U.S., have become even bigger rockstars in their home country. While there are many similarities between NPB and the MLB, there are some drastic differences that you notice the minute you walk into a Japanese stadium. For one, fans become cheerleaders in the stands while their team is at bat. Each player has a unique song, and every fan knows the lyrics to chant along. Secondly, the cold beer conveniently served at your seat is done so by a petite Japanese “beer girl”. It’s a stark contrast to the big and loud “beer guys” yelling “Beer here!” in the U.S.

Hallways are lined with beautiful tapestries and intricate carvings that would have gained Wright’s approval. Rooms are as unfussy now as they were decades ago with armoires, leather chairs and neutral color schemes. The Old Imperial Bar is a throwback of a lounge with lamps adorned in triangles, Marilyn Monroe photos and an ornamental wall from the original building. Elsewhere around the hotel, you can still feel the nostalgia, too. Traditional services are held six days a week at the Toko-An Teahouse, an onsite ceremonial chamber that replicates sukiya architecture down to the granular details. And at Nakata, the popular sushi restaurant, chefs prepare bites in an authentic Tokyo style. Osaka’s Imperial Hotel has made its own bit of history — though the building only dates back to 1996. But even in that relatively short span, the property has hosted political dignitaries, entertainment royalty and anyone else interested in the kind of subdued elegance that the brand has come to be known for. There’s an Old Imperial Bar here as well.

Miles between what we say and what we mean
MP100 Valentines Week Day 4; Aquarium pairing: terumob

Teruki isn't stupid. Far from it, actually.
He prides himself on a quick wit and a sharp analytical mind, always planning two steps ahead no matter who he's with and where they are, and his psychic abilities wouldn't be anywhere near their current level without an obscene amount of study. He knows a little bit about every subject, give or take, and what he finds he doesn't know he's quick to learn.
And so he knows, on a fundamental level, that wanting something and having it are two very different creatures.
As much as he might want Shigeo, Teruki is aware that he can't have him.
For the most part, he's comfortable with that.
His feelings aren't that complicated – shouldn't have come as such a surprise, in all honesty, if Teruki is as smart as he always thought he was. Untouched and unchallenged all his life, growing up looking at the rest of the world through a superior lens, it made perfect sense that someone like Shigeo would come along someday and shake Teruki down to his bones. It made sense that Teruki would be won over by someone so amazing, who wouldn't?
It only becomes confusing when Teruki traces his steps back to the beginning of this infatuation, when admiration became adoration that sat pointedly on his heart until he deigned to open his eyes and see it.
Because he had seen Shigeo perform with his power remarkably, had watched him destroy a school and throw adult espers with a flick of his fingers and levitate a car across the city, and yet Teruki didn't feel those first flutterings of a grade-school crush until that warm afternoon they spent pouring over failed homework in the park, when Teruki offered to help and Shigeo looked at him with bright, wondering eyes.
When he bought Teruki's favorite ice cream alongside his little brother's, nervous through all his kindness as he handed it over, as though there was a chance he might be refused.
When he reached up toward the sky and made it snow in the middle of an indian summer, over just the two of them, comfortable and content in the swirling flurries and smiling so softly in the face of his miracle that Teruki wanted to lie down next to him and just be still.
That awkward, fumbling, soft-spoken boy – that's the one who won Teruki over. And Teruki still wonders when, but he doesn't wonder how.
And when he gets a text from Shigeo during lunch period, a picture message of him very much not in uniform or dragging himself through a grueling day at school, Teruki grabs his bookbag and walks straight out of class, texting back Mind if I join you?
Reigen Arataka's apartment is small and homey, and almost too crowded now that Teruki shows up. But Shigeo is smiling the moment he comes through the door, soft and sweet in a pastel pink hoodie and worn jeans, already scooting to one side of a sagging couch to make room for him – so Teruki doesn't really stop to question his welcome.
He eats up the distance between them in long strides. The tired springs in the couch cushions dip them towards one another as Teruki sits down, but he can't bring himself to mind. He's fully embraced this unrequited personal hell of his, he's determined to enjoy it.
“Shishou is making lunch,” Shigeo says. “And Dimple is helping, I think.”
And his tone of voice isn't animated, by any means, but it's a little livelier than Teruki is used to hearing, like an ocean gray two shades away from true blue. He wonders if it's because of the current setting or the current company, and decides that it's probably a combination of the two.
“You like it here,” he says, and it's not a question. Shigeo's head dips in a nod, dark eyes trailing fondly over the shabby furniture and crooked picture frames.
“It's – familiar to me. When I was little and a job ran late, or a client was a little scary, or my parents were out of town for work, Shishou always let me stay with him. And it was always nice.”
“It sounds like it.” And then, with a playful grin, Teruki adds, “I didn't think you were the type to skip school, Shigeo. What other secrets are you keeping from me?”
Which – okay. Backfires, just a little bit. Some teasing is good, great even. Sometimes Teruki gets a narrow stare, or an eye-roll, or the smallest, smothered chuckle (honestly, he doesn't know how anyone could think the smaller boy is boring) but this time, Shigeo's face turns a faint, delicate red, and his eyes dip down and then away.
Teruki's brain abruptly goes offline.
It's a self-preservation thing.
“Ah,” he's distantly aware of Shigeo mumbling, “that's, actually – because – ”
“Because Mob forgot to get his permission slipped signed before his parents went out of town for the week, and the rest of his grade went on a field trip without him,” Reigen says archly from where he appears in the kitchen doorway, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, tie draped over his shoulder.
He's frowning, but there's a distinct lack of anger in the expression; it's more disquieted than anything, maybe troubled, as he gazes across the room at his young pupil. Then his eyes flicker over to Teruki and he blinks, as if just realizing whose question it is he's answering in the first place, and that complicated, disquieted look clears into a much more obvious confusion.
“Hanazawa? When did you get here?”
“Just now,” Teruki replies, mostly recovered at this point. “Thank you for having me.”
“But – you – I thought you were coming after school. Why aren't you at school?”
“I ditched,” he explains politely. “Like Shigeo.”
“Ah-ah,” Reigen holds up a hand, index finger ticked out importantly. “It isn't ditching if you're signed out by a relative and/or verified adult, like Mob was, and something tells me that wasn't the case with you.” It isn't meant to be cruel, Teruki knows that, even if it is a stark reminder of his life alone; and Reigen is plowing right along before it has a chance to sting, anyway. “How did you even find my apartment?”
“Espers can sense other espers, shishou,” Shigeo reminds him considerately. “It wasn't hard for Teruki to track us down.”
“The auras were so potent I could follow them right to your front door,” Teruki adds. Reigen gives them both a significantly unimpressed look, but the effect is lost as something clatters noisily against the kitchen floor and Dimple laughs darkly.
Reigen lifts his eyes to the ceiling, takes a fortifying breath, and then spins on his heel and disappears back through the doorway. Teruki waits a beat, respecting the tableau, then turns back to his friend.
“Master Reigen signed you out of school? He can do that?”
“Oh,” Shigeo says, “yes. Shishou is my emergency contact, because my teachers have a better chance of reaching him before they can reach my parents.” He blinks, as though realizing how that sounds. “Not because they don't care. They work a lot, and Shishou makes his own hours, so this arrangement is easier. That's what Shishou said.”
“And if Shishou says it, then it must be true,” Teruki says, amused. Shigeo nods peacefully.
“Yes, exactly.”
He gets up to help with lunch at that point – even if it's only to keep Dimple in line – and insists, in that softly insistent way he has, that Teruki should just make himself comfortable until it's time to eat.
Left alone, Teruki glances around the apartment. Gets up after a moment and wanders the living room, the hardwood floor pleasantly cool even through his socks.
Growing up in a house that felt like a museum, Teruki watched everything from an arm's length away. It was all an elaborate show, his parents' attempt to impress clients and woo benefactors, their son something pretty and powerful to put on display. A colorful fish in a glass tank two sizes too big.
Claw's unsuccessful kidnapping attempt had come as something of a relief, in all honesty. Teruki was happy to escape that house, and used one of his father's accounts to purchase a small apartment for himself on the other side of Seasoning City. He knows his family knows where to find him. That they haven't yet – haven't even tried, for all he knows – speaks volumes.
Volumes more than Teruki wants to think about.
So he thinks about Reigen's apartment instead. The cheap-looking knickknacks on almost every flat surface, papers bunched in untidy stacks on the counter, potted plants breathing in the long bars of bright sunlight the open windows throw across the room. Coats and hoodies are dumped over the side of an armchair instead of hung up by the door. There are books scattered across the coffee table. Countless photos decorate the cluttered space, and Shigeo is in most of them. A Salt Middle School report card hangs on the wall under a Caped Baldy sticker.
And when Shigeo wanders back to him after not even five minutes, two steaming cups of coffee in hand and an agreeable Dimple floating above his shoulder, he says, “Shishou told me it’s rude to leave you in here by yourself. Sorry.”
Teruki takes a sip from the mug Shigeo passes him, and he isn’t surprised that it tastes exactly the way he would have prepared it for himself, heavy on the cream and light on the sugar. It’s too hot to drink right away, stinging his lips and burning down the back of his throat, but he keeps it up by his mouth anyway, breathing in the steam.
“Don’t be,” he says, not looking at him. “This is perfect.”
Maybe it’s stupid to find home in a chipped mug of coffee and someone else’s messy apartment, but it's whole worlds better than the cold glass tank Teruki left behind.
Maybe it’s stupid, but Teruki is smart enough not to care.
