Tie dyeing is a popular fabric dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting, and tying fabric in different patterns and then dyeing it with various colors to create a unique and colorful design. Cotton fabric is a great choice for tie dyeing because it absorbs dyes well and holds the color for a long time.
To tie dye cotton fabric, you will need:
 100% cotton fabric (pre-washed)
Fabric dye
Rubber bands
Gloves
Plastic wrap
Large bucket or container
Stirring utensil
Salt (optional)
Here are the steps to tie dye cotton fabric:
Prepare your dye according to the manufacturer's instructions in a large bucket or container. If using powdered dye, dissolve it in hot water before adding cool water to make up the required amount.
Soak your cotton fabric in water and wring it out so it is damp, but not dripping wet.
Fold and twist the fabric into your desired pattern. You can find many tie dye pattern tutorials online, or experiment with your own designs. Use rubber bands to secure the fabric in place. The areas of the fabric that are covered by the rubber bands will resist the dye, creating a white or light-colored pattern.
Put on gloves to protect your hands from the dye. Dip the fabric into the dye, making sure it is fully submerged. Use a stirring utensil to move the fabric around in the dye and ensure even coverage. If desired, add salt to the dye to help the color bond to the fabric.
Once the fabric is fully dyed, remove it from the bucket and rinse it in cold water until the water runs clear. Be careful not to let the fabric touch any surfaces or other fabrics while it is wet, as the dye may transfer.
Remove the rubber bands and unfold the fabric. Rinse it again in cold water, and then wrap it in plastic wrap. Let it sit for several hours or overnight to allow the dye to fully set.
After the dye has set, rinse the fabric one final time in cold water until the water runs clear. Wash the fabric separately in cold water with a mild detergent, and then dry it on a low heat setting or hang it to dry.
Your tie dyed cotton fabric is now ready to use!

New This Week: Shibori on Sale!
Click here to purchase or browse.
Shibori kimono, table runners, wall decor, yardage, haori, scarves, and more - while they last! Pucker up for discounted shibori!
Shibori is the Japanese art of resist dyeing, where the fabric is bound with stitches, clamping, folding, or pleating and then dyed. The pattern is revealed once the binding is removed. It's like "tie-dye" but so much more!

Indigo dyed silk scarf detail of nui Shibori technique. The scarf ends have a more dense and detailed mokume (wood grain) pattern. This scarf was purchased at the recent MREAM Pop Up Shop and is heading off to the Dominican Republic as a gift for a loved one - the best reward for a time consuming technique that I love to stitch.
