Well, this is what it did — it’s not polka dots, but I’m not mad at it. I’m surprised that the exposed portions turned grey and the edges of the pieces covered by the jar lids turned pink — somehow the bleach concentrated there and processed further than the edges of the bundle, which is weird and cool! I think the diamond pattern is because of how I placed the bamboo knives. I think I’m going to let it dry and see how I like it as is before I go and turn it purple. #itajimeshibori #dyeproject #dischargedyeing #experiment https://www.instagram.com/p/CaQogJlMqom/?utm_medium=tumblr

ART INFO: Shibori is the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist. It is a slow craft, often requiring many hours of binding, stitching, and pulling up of threads, followed by multiple dyeing processes. This and the variations in tension and pressure applied in construction mean that every piece produced is unique. rangamaati's kaarigaar Works with Cotton and Silk as their Primary Medium , they uses the traditional Japanese Resist Dyeing process of Shiborii Stitching,Binding Technique used to prepare this Premium Organic Kala Cotton Saree for Dyeing and creating the Masterpiece. #asanoha translates from Japanese as “hemp of leaf” and is often seen in #sashiko and #kimono patterns. #shibori is the Japanese manual resist dying technique that traditionally uses blue dye made from the #indigo plant. #tiedye basically. A friend keeps a natural indigo #dye vat going and invited me to use it. I figured this was a prime opportunity for me to finally practice this technique and dust off what #geometry I remember. I don’t think I have it in me to get the #origami folds happening tonight but it’s a good start. * #itajime #itajimeshibori #handdyed #fabric #fabricartist #hemp #leaf #japanese #japanesefabric #naturaldye #resistdyeing #maker #makersmovement #makersgonnamake #artist #craft

Buy Shibori Sarees Online at Best Prices
The term “Shibori”   is simply the Japanese word 絞り, which translates as to wring or squeeze, and in the crudest term can be described as the traditional, Japanese incarnation of tie-dye.
Tumblr media
Originating in China, “Shibori” dyeing became popular in Japan during Edo Period from the 17th – 19th centuries, as people from lower social classes then needed an alternative to the silk they were banned from wearing. However, the earliest examples of Shibori textiles date all the way back to the 8th century when Emperor Shomu, the 45th Emperor of Japan, included a piece of shibori dyed cloth in a collection of items donated to Nara’s Todai-ji Temple. As time progressed, new variations of the technique came into being. There are six standard traditional “Shibori” techniques:——KumoShibori, Miura Shibori, KanokoShibori, ArashiShibori, Nui Shibori and ItajimeShibori.
“Nui Shibori” is the most detailed of all the Shibori techniques and it is as much about stitching as it is about dyeing. Hand stitching techniques and wooden dowels are used to create resists and then the fabric is dyed, the outcome of which is carefully crafted intricate designs with accurate patterns. In Resham Shilpi, Shibori sarees are made with purest quality of tasar fabrics following the technique of “Nui Shibori”. The artisanal handcrafted quality of the process makes each saree an unique piece.

Dye project time. I promised myself I would do at least one over this break, and today I finally put my mind to it. This is a black T-shirt dress that I never wear because it faded in a really strange way that I can’t account for and don’t really like. I did concertina pleats on the diagonal and then again the other direction to get a square slightly larger than the jar lids I’m using as a resist. I had originally thought I would use one or two giant c clamps to hold it all together, but the clamps kept slipping before I could get the tension I needed, so I found some bamboo knives and wrapped the ends with rubber bands. I’m going to give it a bath in diluted bleach. What I’m hoping will happen: black polka dots! What will actually happen: who the hell knows! This technique is called itajime shibori, and it’s one I haven’t done much experimenting with yet, as evidenced by the bamboo knives I had to put into service here. Depending on what happens after the bleach does its thing I’m going to do another dye thing with it, TBD but probably low immersion to get an all over crystalline effect as opposed to another stronger resist technique. I’m thinking purple but we’ll see what color the bleach reveals. It’s been an unexpectedly difficult couple of days here. Lots of trauma rearing its head, lots of depression and anxiety. I think I’ve been pushing through a lot of things and putting them off, telling myself I’ll get to them later because there’s been So. Much. Work to do, and now that I’m in the middle of a four day break with not enough work to keep me moving forward like a shark, later it finally here. I’m talking body pains, deep fatigue, biting my lips raw, crying in the mornings, spiritual restlessness, loneliness. On Friday after work my joints hurt so bad I could barely get off the couch. CPTSD is a total bitch. Anyway hopefully this project will be the quick fix I’m looking for to get the creative juices flowing — I have lots of ideas, but it takes doing something to feel ready to execute these concepts that live in my brain. I’m excited to see what happens! #itajimeshibori #shibori #reversedye #creativity #dyeproject #fieldexpedient #experiment https://www.instagram.com/p/CaP4PaLFZWq/?utm_medium=tumblr
