“Okay, okay, I give up, turn the fucking lights on.”

“It’s been like two min- fine,” Sam says, feeling around for the switch and flicking it on before he turns to take stock of the situation.

Clint has somehow managed to get his vest stuck on his head and arms – backwards, too, and it’d be laughable if it wasn’t for the miles and miles of tanned skin and scars on display. His pants are slung far too low on his hips and Sam’s struck with the sudden urge to dig his fingers into the hand-shaped bruises that someone has left, see what kind of a noise Clint makes.

“I thought you said that you were fine to suit up in the dark,” Sam says eventually.

“I thought I was! I’m doing my best here, man,” Clint says with his voice muffled by the vest, oblivious to the staring he’s receiving.

Sam’s so busy looking at Clint’s body that he nearly misses the way that Bucky’s looking at both of them. Clint hadn’t given him time to get into his own suit so Sam’s in a similar state of undress, and the Winter Soldier’s intense staring has gone from a ten to a hundred, like he’s seconds away from throwing one or both of them on the bed and having his way. He’s fully dressed – black leather from head to toe and Sam idly thinks about what it’d feel like on his skin, wonders if he could take it that far without it blowing up in their faces.

And then Clint overbalances and knocks them both over, still stuck in his vest, and the sexual tension vanishes and is replaced by an elbow to his gut.

It’s a damn good thing that Clint’s pretty.

Bucky’s been away for a long time.

It wasn’t meant to be this way. He’d promised himself that he’d get his life sorted (get himself sorted) and then he’d stop feeling guilty every time he took up their time to talk about the old days, every time they’d put on an old movie at three in the morning and watch it with him to stave off the nightmares and every time that he’d fall asleep with his head in someone’s lap.

Somehow days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, and he still has nightmares but he can’t convince himself to stay away any longer.

“Bucky,” Clint says as soon as he opens the door, eyes wide. He looks the same – haphazard hair, Redwing cozied up to his left ear (careful of the hearing aid hooked on it,) a bandaid stuck on his jaw – and it makes Bucky’s heart ache a little.

“Hi,” Bucky says, and that’s all he gets out before he’s forced to catch six-foot-plus of archer, taking a step back to try and catch his balance with Clint’s hugging him so hard that it hurts. He nearly misses the second figure appearing in the doorway and then his eyes meet Sam’s.

“Barnes,” Sam says.

“Wilson,” Bucky returns.

Sam’s expression is hard to read and Bucky’s not expecting Sam to join in on the hug but that’s what he does. They must look ridiculous standing in the hallway like this, but no one comments on it and Bucky doesn’t let go until they do – and then, Sam catches his wrist and pulls him through the doorway.

Home.

He’s an idiot.

“Yeah, so Sam and Clint both took the day off,” Bucky says, jamming his phone between his shoulder and his ear as he walks down the street. “Which means I couldn’t have a damn lunch break without closing the store and it’s a pain in my ass to do that. Maybe I should just fire them.”

“Would you really fire both of them?”

“I could,” Bucky says, which is as good as a no.

“Nah,” Bucky says, waves Steve and Sam over with his free hand. “What’s the problem, Steve?”

Truth be told, he knows exactly what the problem is. He just likes fucking with Steve in his newfound retirement from Winter Soldier-related things, whether it be stealing his towels or having flings with his coworkers.

“I. It doesn’t matter, I’ll come back later,” Steve says eventually, once he’s found his words again. He disappears a second later, face redder than a tomato.

Sam doesn’t go anywhere.

It's super hot here today. Would you consider a snippet of the winterbirds experiencing snow in NYC in July?

Bucky doesn’t sleep much, these days.

The therapist always gets this weird look on her face when they talk about his sleeping habits. It’s not the nightmares, though – not that she ever believes him. He’s pretty his brain just isn’t wired for that much downtime anymore, not after spending all those years in the freezer. The lack of rest doesn’t really affect him because of the serum, so it’s not like it matters.

Besides, he likes these quiet little moments in the middle of the night. He’s sitting on the couch facing the window, warm bodies sandwiching him every way possible. Clint’s sprawled over his lap, snoring loud enough that it’s almost worrying. He’d appeared at midnight, muttering something about donuts and burrowing his way into Bucky’s personal space. Sam had shown up an hour or two later to make fun of Clint before falling asleep himself, the hypocrite.

He loves them.

Bucky blinks slow and there’s spots dancing in front of his eyes. It takes him a moment to realise the dots are outside of the window, and then he pokes Clint in the face, elbows Sam as gently as he can. “Look.”

“Hnrgh,” Clint says, turning over to hidehis face in Bucky’s stomach.

Sam’s a little more alert, although not by much. “Is that-”

“It’s snowing,” Bucky says.

“It’s July,” Clint says, voice muffled by Bucky’s hoodie. He rolls over when Sam prods him in the ribs, squints at the window as well. “Oh, hey. Look at that.”

“It’s nice,” Bucky says.

“Better not be aliens,” Sam mutters.

If it is aliens, Bucky can’t say that he cares that much. It’s oddly beautiful, and right now he can’t think of a single reason that sleep would be more important than a moment like this.
