AHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS GOING TO GET SOOOO LONG!!!! i have a different view of the indo fam as a whole. i call them the indo fam but i mean the found family trope!!!! theyre like a group of college students sharing a dorm if that makes sense, since their servant selves are obviously different from their initial myths/human vessels!!!

OK SO. RECENTLY, i have an oomf that found books about arjuna that summarize his exploits in the mahabharata(I DONT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO READ IT ALL IM SO SORRY) and also talk about him in a more philosphical manner such as his states of mind during each event etc and i’ve been meaning to read said book because im genuinely interested in arjuna now!!! and i’d like to know more about this indo prince because from what i’ve seen, he is portrayed in a rather bad light(?) in FGO which i find extremely !!!!!!!!!!! and incrdibley !!!!!!! strange !!!!!!! the mahabharata’s conflicts can be put in a mostly grey area where there’s no good nor bad, its not black and white. so seeing arjuna get bashed because of the way his conflict with karna was written is... hm. let’s say that im REALLY starting to understand arjuna fans that dislike seeing him get mischaracterized so much. OTHER THAN THAT, his design is adorable, his travel outfit is my favourite because he deserves to relax and have some fun!!! fgo making him a chuuni is cute and his VAs little moans are cute cute cute!!!!!!!!!!! ANEWAYS i also have quite the thoughts about karna, his characterization in the game is linked to arjuna’s and thats fine but i think that forgetting how much of a little sassy bastard he can get was a mistake! did you know that in apocrypha’s german dub on netflix, when jeanne calls his name like “You’re Karna, aren’t you ? The son of the Indian Sun God !” HES LIKE “So ?” AND THAT WAS SOOOO BITCHY OF HIM, i think that karna is a good boy in fgo but the fact that he was such a fighty old man in the mahabharata shouldnt be forgotten and is a charm trait. I MEAN ???? HE THREW HANDS WITH AN 18 YEAR OLD(ARJUN) WHILE BEIN LIKE... THIRTY TWO. ganesha is also a character im deeply interested in but i havent played CCC so i dont know that many details about jinako herself !! my brain goes HMMMMMM it seems lord ganesha is trans in fgo ! (since kama used to be a male god originally as well!!) ganesha uses all pronouns!!! and ganesha is also special to me because they share similar traits with kama when it comes to their characterization AND mischaracterizations. ganesha isnt JUST jinako. theres a part of a god in the servant mix!!! and jinako HERSELF is actually a pretty sad character imo. the whole otaku/neet thing is obviously a facade and her true wish being that she wants to redo her whole life is also proof of how much she hates what shes become, yet at the same time, she doesnt know what else she could do. but anyways, i prefer looking at servants from a lore POV so i think that ganesha should still be considered a god and be adressed as such!! i like seeing people portray ganesha as jinako but i prefer it when a certain lavish more godly side of them is put forward. a side of jinako that managed to move on a little bit if that makes sense ? that got more serious. and became someone else entierly despite sharing similarities. needless to say their bond with karna makes me happy since he shows them respect as you should towards a god!! its a bit different from their bond in CCC... like they matured somewhat!! anyway ganesha is the one who taught everyone else in the indo fam about video games and technology and i will NEVER shut up.

(... would sita count.) and lakshi being a jeanneface is a waste. well, she’s still very pretty and her lore is also quite interesting!! i havent looked into it fully yet but i think she should be kissed on the mouth. her bad luck makes me slip on a banana peel whenevr i get close to her to kiss her and i hit my head on the pavement and pass away- 

parvati is on a tough spot for me atm. i genuinely love thinking of her as the way the indian goddess herself is portrayed because thats where the fun lies for me in her character. especially when shes involved with other indian servants, thats a given!! i would like to see parvati grow, suffer and heal. because branding her as an “all-knowing mom” is easy, but every single parent makes mistakes if you follow that logic. also, since shes the sakura servant “thats closest to her initial personality”, she’s got some of the most Repulsive fans ive Ever witnessed in fandom spaces and lets say that im trying to work my way out of this hellhole and find things to like about parvati without the fandom’s influence. needless to say, im going to keep looking into her mythos and her lore by myself at my own pace and keep doing my own thing in my little corner. 

rama shouldve been a jock. THE RAMAYANA IS OLDER THAN THE MAHABHARATA, WHY IS.....Hrm well him being summoned as his baby version gives me hope for a future rama alt perhaps??? but i think that he shouldve been a total jock and he shouldve been huge with a huge red lion-like mane for his hair and a teethy grin and big biceps and intense love for his wife. i made a post about their history (very general) in this post so ill talk more about their personalities and things that stand out about them cuz i love them

so the tldr is that they’re an off shoot of the uchiha clan from the first great ninja war when yokumo fucked straight off from konoha due to 75% paranoia that turned to 99% paranoia when he left but cant go back now! hed be a rogue nin! so he settles down in the land of grass with Asaro the most best girl character ive ever made. She’s a tailor/seamstress/weaver in this tiny village and she just radiates chill, shes been your mom friend since grade 2 and will continue to be your mom friend until death

yokumo is Stressed and Strict because my dude has the sharingan so when they have three kids (not at the same time hot damn) he decides like any good parent to just refuse to let them use their eye powers at all (note: this is probably not a good parenting tecnique)

tenjo is the oldest daughter and she idolizes her dad so fucking much dude and shes fighty, boy pulls her hair and gets an ass whopping , shes the queen of the village kids but with different leading skills than her mom. she legit saw yokumo use jutsu ONCE and went “oh hell yeah time to be ninja”

jiyuro is the middle kid and he just vibes dude, hes a normal easy going kid that reaps the reward of being the sibling of the queen of kids, hes also the kind of bastard that can and will use his sharingan to cheat in exams, something he can only pull of thanks to the babiest brother 30 under 30 ninja luminary chiban who cant use the sharingan but damn is that boy neck deep in genjutsu training

chiban put like all his dnd leveling towards genjutsu and some taijutsu so he wouldnt mcfucking die in the middle of a fight in the event that his genjutsu fails. his illusions are amazing tho and real specialised, he can make you believe that those eyes? those red eyes with weird dots in em? yeah totally normal, you didnt see shit. the same with cuts and bruises, dude specialices in detailed genjutsu instead of haha you got caught in a plant or some of the other ridiculus shit naruto characters do

now tenjo gets married not once, not thrice but two times, first time to your local imported bitch boy hatsunaio ha’ame whos playing the longest con in existance aka he “falls in love” with tenjo and gets married, has a kid, all so he can confirm that the clan has the sharingan to report back to konoha cuz that aint right, sharingan outside of konoha and even more sharingan outside a hidden village

fear not tought! imported asshoe gets killed by tenjo with the sweet loot of the mangekyou sharingan and Trauma!

her second marrage is 4-5 years later with drinker of respecting woman juice Tsumashin Aishika who had been a family friend since a bit after ha’ame got what was coming to him. Aishika is super patient and just Kind Man, if only he was stupid and buff he would be a himbo but he’s average and kinda smart so Good Dad will have to do. He likes to read and is a wood worker.

Tenjos kids are a fucking story too, btw hope you wanted a long long post cuz youve really gotten me started now

Renge, the kid she had with Ha’ame, is the oldest and she doesnt remember her dad at all, shes been called a clone of her mom with the fightyness and the “wow cool! need to learn that!” reaction to jutsu. Shes impulsive if shes on her own and the worlds biggest glass canon in a fight because she has trash chakra stores and the impatience to skip on learning to distrobute it properly, she also has the vibration style kekkei genkai (lightning + wind) which just eats up her chakra 

first kid with Aishika is Hotoki whos like her mom but EXTREME, shes the naruto of the kadzuki fam, impatient, a brat and ready to throw down instantly, shes stubborn as fuck and she wants to be the Tsukikage, a position that doesnt exist for a village that doesnt exist in a land that already has a hidden village. her family is supportive tho

last kid is Makuto whos one of only three kids in this clan thats youngler than naruto. his life starts of great by killing his mom with complications during birth giving him absolutly no problems down the road, nope, haha. Hes pretty reserved and likes his grandmas craft better than his grand dads so he takes up tailoring and later pottery, hes a fast learner 100% because of the sharingan

then we have jiyuros wife Pantama Hoshi, shes friend shaped and radiates chill like asaro. they met while team one (aka tenjo, jiyuro and chiban) was out at another town for a mission. shes a gardener and grows medicinal herbs along with real good flowers. theyre by far the most calm parents in the family and basically became foster parents for Tenjos kids once she died so yes, they have two dads. Hoshi can and will support you in anything thats not plain out stupid

Jiyuros first kid is Nishi whos good and cautious, shes the single kid in the budding team 2 that thinks things through properly before doing something, but too much, shes a pesemist, and probably has anxiety, on the upside all of the plans shes involved with goes without a hitch because she provides endless “what if bad thing happens” scenarios, in the downside plans take so much longer because of said what ifs, she specialises in sealing and summoning but really really wants to be a medical ninja because you see what if someone gets hirt! what if renge becomes dumb bitch during a mission and gets hurt because shes a glass canon

the second kid is Takuhi whos the mediating voice of reason that pushes Renge to listen to what ifs and makes Nishi remember that sometimes improv is whats needed during a mission, hes on the cautious until proover otherwise side. He hangs out with Yokumo a lot and is slowly inhereting his paranoia and or world waryness

TIME FOR MY FAVE BRANCH

Chibans family is amazing because i love them, his wife Yamatora Seiho, usually called by her last name, is an ex shinobi from the land of grass (she freaked Tenjo out a bunch after the Ha’ame bullshit went down) thats just so fucking done with the kage and government so she went to do that good good farming cottage core life but shes really not suited for it. shes ready to throw the fuck down at any time but shes also kind to her kids and real serious

she also had a previous marrage that ended in good ol murder (not her killing her husband for once in this clans history) but basically she took her at the time 5 y/o son Usagi with her and Chiban said fuck it join the family instantly

Usagi feels so fucking left out tho cuz he wants to be included in the playing the other kids do but he cant manage to care about that whole ninja thing plus he doesnt have eye powers and just why bother, so instead he goes to Asaro and asks her to be his teacher, he also becomes a barber in the town because my god did Jiyuro really just almost cut his sons ear off???

THEN THE TWINS!!

Hikame and Yorukoi are twin girls and the other two that’re younger than naruto in the clan, theyre 9 when hes 12. They spend their time usually together or with Hotoki and Makoto since Usagi is 13 years older than them and Renge, Nishi and Takuhi are team 2 on missions a lot. Yorukoi really loves animals and looks up to Nishi because holy shit mom she can summon animals with only a lil blood holy fuck meanwhile Hikame likes art and drawing the aimals Yurokoi comes sprinting home to tell everyone she found

The twins and Hotoki will make up Team 3 just as soon as Yokumo lets them because oops a few years ago the whole konoha branch of the uchiha got fucking annihilated and we might be next.com

Whoaaa!!!! A DC movie other then wonder woman with a recognizable plot structure! And character arcs! Amazing!

Seriously, though, this was fun. nothing extraordinary, but it worked well.

Main Character: I think the idea they had for Arthur’s character arc was good, in that he learned to not take the violent route, to save people in need. I think they had a good starting point, and played it really well with his fight with Black Manta but eh? The remainder of it felt more forced than central to the story. 

Side Characters: I like Mera at the beginning too, I wish she had more arc than just being the fighty princess, but she did a good job. Prince Oram was fairly generic villain but eh. Willem Dafoe was...completely unnecessary? like...what did he really do other than train Arthur? Arthur’s parents were cool. Black Manta was very possibly my favorite I look forward to seeing him in later movies.

Other characters: Oh hey its a scientist guy thats definitely gonna be in the next one because hes played by Randall Park!

Plot: I think the basic outline was okay? Like, get the maguffin? but it got a bit bogged down in world building

Story: Spare your enemies i guess, which is cool

Design: Pretty! Way too much cgi

Cinnamontography: Alright....I mean it was fine, I think it may have had some weird choices in the editing room

That she’s not doing a good enough job being captain, that she’s not strong enough to support the people she needs to. She would probs fall completely silent and, depending on who was saying it, either take it directly to heart or try and convince herself that it’s not true (even as she’s already completely taking to heart, /cough). But if it’s someone she trusts, she’s gonna take it to heart and then take action, if not, then she’ll keep it in mind

3: Does your OC behave differently around different people, if so with whom and how?

She’s pretty consistent. She’s obviously more open emotionally with her friendos, especially with Sylvia, but her values and general attitudes stay the same. There’s more of a difference between her on the job and (relatively) off, like she’ll put a lot more effort into her outfit, posture, and the like when on the job and she watches her words a lot more, and takes as much care as possible to not swear. (which she failed in her VERY FIRST SPEECH but then she got a fuck ton better at it). But that’s not so much specific people (okay with Briorge she defaults to On The Job and has to work herself back down to Off the Job mode but OTHER THAN THAT), just specific situations

5: How would your OC generally react to someone being verbally abusive towards them for no apparent reason?

Again it depends on who does it.

If it’s a friend, she’s going to be like ‘oh no, something’s up with them’ and try to help them out and would just shrug off pretty much everything said to her.

If it’s a stranger, she’s going to like *squints suspiciously* and try to handle it diplomatically.

If it’s a like real close friend, she’s gonna take that shit to heart, even if it turns out that they were angry because of something else, but like, still not lash out and just take it, gods give her a hug

I only really know of one somewhat important detail that hs2 contradicts the epilgoues in. Loooong story short, Jake and Jane get married (insert emotion between meh and bleh) and Jake leaves her and hangs with John for a while. In the epilogue, it says she sent divorce papers in the mail, but in hs2 that never happened and she has no idea he wants to leave her. There's probably other little details that conflict but thats the big one. I don't really know what the authors have been saying about stuff though. I haven't really been paying attention to them. I know theres been some drama but i dont really know any details.

I do agree that the fandom is very fighty recently. And honestly the worst part about EP/HS2 isn't the content itself, but how it managed to tear apart a pretty strong fandom. Like yeah we were a little cringy in 2012 but we were cringy TOGETHER! and even after it ended and people were a bit disappointed, things were still civil and we'd pop up with a "happy 413/612/1025/ WE LIVE!!!" every so often. And i especially miss the fun theories! And the race to draw certain panels or characters first! But now people just... dont. People like to edit/redraw the davekat kiss or make other characters "ultimate" but thats about it. I really do miss the fun cringy fandom we used to be sometimes 😭.

Also, there WERE some pretty heated debates. Mostly involving shipping or Vriska...

I think I first heard of HS around the time of Cascade, but didn't start reading until Christmas. I think it was Christmas day even. And the page I got caught up on was "Ball: Drop" on New Years. I'm honestly not sure why I remember all that but I guess that's just how important it was to me. Im gettin all sentimental over here 😭

I agree with your take on Cascade. It was damn good and you make very good points. But I would like to add one of my other favorite flashes, Game Over, to this discussion. Cascade had deaths but it still felt triumphant and the deaths/resurrections didn't feel cheap, like you said. Game Over, on the other hand.... ended with almost every single character straight up dying. But it was still really good and even though everyone was dead, it still felt like Homestuck. Everyone knew the characters probably wouldn't stay dead forever. And there was a massive gap right afterwards too, so there was plenty of time for speculation. (And time for me to dip out of the fandom except for 3 days a year)

It also resulted in a massive un-dying and retconning of timeline stuff which... I personally didn't care for but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

I'll be honest there was a point near the end of act 6 where I was kinda not very into HS anymore and the pettiness and drama between the alpha kids was all I really cared about. Still sad some of the issues were dealt with off screen though.

Wow, Fruits Basket really does sound like something I'd like! When I was first getting into anime, I think I wrote it off because "bluh bluh dont want no cheesy romance anime" but it actually sounds good! I'll have to check it out thanks for the suggestion lol. Should I watch the old anime adaptation or the new one? Does it matter?

Side note: I watched a reenactment of the Detective Pony fanfic. If you haven't read/watched it I highly recommend. EP/HS2 is suspiciously similar and DP is basically the thing i wanted when it comes to weird meta fiction and narrative control while being light hearted and dumb. 10/10 whoever wrote that

I want to compile a more complete rundown of my thoughts about homestuck 2. I want all the stuff in my head to be in one place, and I know this is going to be incredibly long winded and I don’t care. I want to be honest… I want to understand why I don’t like this media. on more than a “but of course” level because there are a lot of people who have it as a gut reaction that this stuff isn’t right. but I think there are layers to what produces that. I wanna get in depth with this. so that’s what I’m gonna attempt to do.

If it seems surprisingly soon for one of these, that's because it's not a regular one - I did a solo for the human barbarian

also i went back to using d20, because 1. that way everyone knows how to do things, and 2. it means mechanics are in place that create an actual lose state that the players might hit if they get in over their heads, which is important because i think we're all (myself included) mainly interested in fun stuff happening and playing a fun mechanical game, because we're not so great at the roleplaying yet.

anyway here's what happened

so the barbarian was getting bored of being with the party because they fought very little and seemed to have goals not entirely aligned with her "i want to fighty the things" goals so she got up in the middle of the night, took her cat, and ran off towards a mountain that seemed like it could be interesting

along the way she came to a giant mass of black briars, and a temple that looked like it probably went through them, but also was likely a tad infested, but hey seems like fun adventure times, on she went

inside there was this dead weird fantasy version of a liopleurodon, also unicorn statues, also the dead thing was called a serrkeru and it was more accurate to say it was a zombie. And it attacked. But before it could be properly murderated, there was this rumbling noise and the barbarian went out of the temple to see what was up and didn't see much but when she got back it looked like a gianter serrkeru came and ate the one she was dealing with. Oh well

also apparently serrkeru are from a different continent, that was a little fun factoid presented

so she went onwards and ran into this group of humanoid-frog skeletons, and one twig frog effigy, being puppeted by the black briars extending into the temple. the skeleton-puppets were guarding the corpse of a dead unicorn, until they weren't, because the barbarian smashed them to pieces pretty quickly. And then she took the horn, and then discovered that was a good move because the horn was needed to open a magically sealed door preventing further passage. So that door was opened and hooray

but there were like 20+ frog skeleton puppets in the next room and they immediately took notice of her

thankfully, the unicorn horn apparently allowed the barbarian to command the frog skeletons and so she had an army and she marched on with it. And then ran into the giant undead serrkeru that ate the smaller one she wanted to kill. So obviously it was time to murderate it in revenge, with a bunch of puppeted frog skeletons to back her up

anyway so after a very long time the big serrkeru was dead, and most frog skeletons were smashed to pieces, but victory and moving on happened! So the barbarian eventually came to this mud slide with lots of frog corpses and effigies, mostly effigies at the top, and she went up and got covered in mud and scared the frog people who she found at the top. And then her displacer beast came up and also scared them. And then the frog skeletons came up but by that point they were about as scared as they could be already. Also at this point it was revealed the frog-people were bullywogs, but we continued to call them frogs anyway

so after some questioning about desecration of sacred burial grounds, the barbarian asked about if the mountain she was heading towards was any cool, and the bullywogs were like noooo there's giants. you'll die. also political things regarding giants that we're not gonna explain because that'd take time and it'd probably be boring. but basically no, but if you DO want to go to that mountain and fight giants and actually have a chance of survival, there's a giant-hunting guild of sorts over in this city we want to head to

sure this sounds cool, says the barbarian, i want to go to this city so i can come back here and fight giants

and this works out for the bullywogs too, they say, because they've been unable to leave the swamp and go to the town to buy fancy clothes. because they have fancy clothes but they're all very dirty because swamps are dirty. and that's bad. they want good clothes. But the important part is the part where everyone keeps dying when they try to leave, there's always a survivor who comes back and the stories are wildly inconsistent

anyway so the barbarian acts as a bodyguard, and as such gets a free ride in the morning after a long rest that I'll mention later in my retrospective. so the bullywogs get on their boatcart, and two with hooks attached to their tongues shoot them at trees and tug the boat forward because that's an efficient way of travel. also on the boat is a survivor from the last boatcart ride who wants to help point out where The Thing Attacked Them, also a merchant, also a bullywog who just wanted to visit the city.

anyway so they reached the area where they got attacked, the barbarian spots a spear sticking out from behind a tree, the survivor is like "oh no thats it. thats it please go investigate"

so the barbarian prepares to get out of the boatcart but is then pushed out, by the survivor, who upon touching the barbarian morphs into them, complete with axe, because apparently it was actually some sort of shapeshifter. it then murderates one of the hooktongue frogs, the frog who wanted to visit, and uses its black-briar-bones to ensnare the merchant frog but then the merchant frog turned out to be buff and rolled a crit on a strength check and busted out

also this entire time the barbarian's cat was REALLY confused because there were two masters?? what do?? the barbarian's player kept making intelligence rolls to see if the cat figured out what was going on. It did not.

anyway the barbarian human successfully smashed the shapeshifter's face in for a few rounds before the shapeshifter sunk into the swamp and nope'd out. and then the frogs were like "ok lets go on to the town and figure out what that thing is and how to kill it" and the barbarian was like "great cool onwards" and onwards they went

~DING~ SO WHAT WENT WRONG? SOMETHING ALWAYS GOES WRONG.

I didn't actually have the temple part planned. I came up with the idea of commanding a frog army very late in the process, and the giant serrkeru fight, and was just sorta like "aces, cool, great, these combat encounters will be interesting" but really they were just kinda eh? But the player said they had fun, they figured it'd have been different for other players but with just the barbarian, who loved killing things, it was a blast

I HAD TO MAKE TWO RETCONS AND IT UPSETS ME. But they're for the greater good. The first was a fuckup on my part because the long rest sets the timeline up weird, the barbarian SHOULD have immediately gotten on the boatcart but I forgot, whoops.

The second is that we're saying the shapeshifter also cloned the cat too - I already knew it had the capability to clone beyond just the person it touches, since that's how it made the axe and also other items/clothes, but the cat is a stretch but not impossible given how closely tied the barbarian is to her pet. The reason this retcon is important is because the shapeshifter is going to be the one who rejoins the main party to try and trick them into helping find the frogs and kill them. (The shapeshifter is one of many tasked with keeping the denizens of the swamp inside the swamp through murdery means.) There's some extra details in there, but the high-level one there is just, yeah, fake barbarian in the party and the players will have no idea because NONE OF THEM READ MY BLOG, RIGHT? RIGHT? i told you not to read my blog i explicitly told you, you better not, youre only hurting yourself AND ALSO ME

Anyway. Overall it was a frantic flailing solo but it worked out decently. I couldn't do the bullywog voice I practiced - when it came time to do it I just couldn't summon up the will to make my vocal chords behave. But oh well!

Also I need to stop immersion-breaking and poking at my own world as a way to shield myself from criticism. When I told the player the monsters were called serrkeru I immediately started backpedaling and saying But Obviously Unimportant Arbitrary, which, I shouldn't do. I like the name. I like the names I give my stuff, I like taking my stuff seriously.

OH RIGHT ALSO I FUCKED UP i said the black briars were outside the temple waiting to take the frog skeletons with them, but then the player was like "theyre not coming with me right" and i was like (wait, should they? i mean i had plans to have the shapeshifter take command of them and itd be a cool twist moment, but, i guess) "nope they are confined to the temple" and so I mean, *I* know I fucked up there, but the player didn't, so. I just get to sit in solitude and feel like I need to do better

anyway, as a result of the upcoming arc I have been trying out my make-interesting-fights muscles, and there's gonna be a duo with the barbarian's player and the dwarf paladin's player (who will be playing a new character, a monk I think?) which will be a good testing grounds to see if I actually end up with interesting fights, or, if they just end up being... Really cluttered. WHO KNOWS

also I successfully figured out how to make Tinder 'N More feel like a valid part of my canon instead of a one-off joke for the sake I made to appease one of my players asking "where can i find tinder to burn down this dog shelter". I mean, it's still a silly concept that didn't need to be there, but I've taken it seriously enough in integrating it, and it led to a fun character backstory thing/ability idea, so I'm happy with where that is

I think this also counts as my first attempt to, like... steer a player down a certain path. It felt weird, but I think it turned out okay. This was the main feedback I took away from session 4 - i do not know how to do open-world well yet, so, sticking to slightly railroaded. I'm working on it! I'm working on it.
