favourite thing: I love how nice and gentle and sweet he is despite everything going on, but also in 03 how he has this anger and almost self disregard bubbling as time goes - when he's captured by envy thinking he should have died so many times in the past, when he tries to rip wrath arm off to give it to ed, when he recklessly sacrifices himself to try and save ed

least favourite thing: I feel like cos shortchanges him way too much. we get such a compelling insight into ed throughout the whole series even if much is implicit, but cos doesn't really reckon with either al losing his memory and how he feels about that or have time to deal w him regaining it and what that means for him and ed. and I get it's prob partially intentional because amnesiac al feeling more unknowable deliberately alienates us from him - he genuinely feels different, and we have to wonder if the recklessly cheery attitude is a facade to cope w missing ed. but nonetheless it feels like cos kindve demotes al from the co protagonist position he had throughout the series

favourite line: not fav for any deep content but i love the delivery - the bit in cos where ed lands in the armour pile, sees a helmet that looks just like al - and then its eyes light up and you hear a 'niisan..? NIISAN!!'

brotp: ed and al!!!! I love their relationship so much it is so deep and powerful. but also scar and al is such a nice duo - the way scar vicariously lives through the elrics brotherly love because he regrets letting his crush on human lust get in the way of telling his brother he loved him 😭 also al/wrath post COS bc the film left so much of their relationship unexplored and I need to know

i’m a student studying abroad this semester, so my butch & i are doing long distance now for the first time. it’s really hard :(

i rlly want all her attention like. all the time. but now more than ever that’s not possible — especially bc there’s a 6 hour time difference btwn us. it’s hard navigating the line btwn being normal needy & unrealistic needy.

do you have any tips for making long distance less of a nightmare? (especially for students / ppl w full time obligations)

my heart goes out to you, that's a rough situation to be in.

i've done temporary long distance, and i've done indefinite long distance, and to tell you the truth i'm no good with it. it's just not for me. everyone's wired different, and so some folks will do better with it than others.

so i'll give you the best advice i have, but just take it with a grain of salt as i don't have the best history with it.

when you've got a partner, in addition to the other roles they play in your life, they're your companion and friend. that's especially true in our community where often times your partner is the person who makes you feel seen, a place to be yourself.

my advice if you're feeling lonely is to branch out socially, if you can. we all have social needs, and it's important to surround yourself with people you can share jokes with, and that sort of thing.

my other advice is to find outlets for your love for your butch. it can be hard when you can't connect like usual. don't just do zoom dates, write each other letters and find other ways to feel close. you can close the gap between you a lot of ways, send each other songs to listen to, watch shows and talk about them later. dive into your shared interests, because while you won't always have time together, you can still carry them in your heart while you do those things 'together.'

it can be easy to feel needy or insecure when you don't have your partner there to work it through. and reassure you. but remember she's probably feeling pretty similarly. communicating long distance can add some barriers, so if things are hard or you're feeling distant from one another, take time to communicate. remember that love is stronger than a lot of the things you're going to have to deal with.

it sounds like this is a temporary thing, which is good. you'll get through this ☺️

we’re having a ton of sick calls at work btwn ppl getting vaccines and feeling ill, + the overwhelming heat and humidity, + constant storms, + just general apathy about work combined with the fact that if an employer attempts to fire you for feeling ill during All This, it will not go well for them, so my boss is going the extra mile petty and saying “if you call in sick for ANY reason at all, you have to bring back a negative covid test before i let you back in the building” as some kinda ‘gotcha’ to punish ppl by having it be “well now you have to take several unpaid days off, think of your paycheque before you try and call in sick”

but a) it’s for SURE not working, bc now that people have gotten wind of it, everyone’s plotting long weekends and peacing out to enjoy some free time off (do not blame them at all for this, enjoy it babes~) 

b) somebody called in bc they pulled smthn in their back when they fell down their wet front steps, and boss was like “don’t care get a test”, so her plan is to out-petty her by getting a doctors note for the time off required for her back to heal (2 weeks) and then getting the covid test the day that that note expires and tacking on an extra couple days off.

c) all of this just means that our regular staff of about 45-50 right now has been, for the last several MONTHS, never more than 20-30, so everyone went from “oh god, this is a nightmare, we aren’t hitting quota and everyone is gone which means i have to work so hard to keep up!! :’((” to “wait a minute... they aren’t paying me enough to be stressed about this. everyone knows we won’t hit quota with under half a team, so why don’t we just have fun with it then? why should i push myself harder to cover gaps that aren’t my fault?” so the mood did a 180 and now it’s just kinda silly every day, and my boss is like. in the office screaming into a pillow once an hour bc she keeps turning in bad numbers to her boss bc her little idiot petty plan backfired big time.

also the second we went from “oh no i can’t keep up with all these people missing!!!” to “wait, let’s just do what we can and enjoy the day”, our numbers did an uptick anyways. it’s almost like....... happy people..... do good work or something....? huh, weird. 🙄

i absolutely LOVE working with this incompetent kids movie villain, bc half the time her own evil little clown plans backfire on herself and it brings joy to everyone like when the grinch stopped being a bitch, OR, her little plots are so over the top cartoonishly evil that the second i (or anyone else) contests them, they fall apart like a house of cards.

okay i promised id do it and im doing it: Explaining The Plot Of That AU I’m Vague About: The Post

(as i was preparing to write this i actually got my 250th follower, which slapped)

so i’m just gonna start with the simple version, which is this: it’s a rebel AU which primarily centers around the tallest, who are both defective. they give up on trying to make any meaningful changes as figureheads, and instead direct their attention to being involved with the “neo defect revolution,” or NDR. they do manage to make one change as tallest- there is a garbage dump planet turned into a sanctuary for defectives (who in this au are executed once discovered,) and eventually enough of the populace finds out about it that the tallest have to deal with it. they finesse their way into kicking it out of the empire, so now it’s its own planet with its own rules, governments, and most importantly, immigration policies and protections

a lot of stuff happens and it’s gonna be structured using arcs, and each arc has a separate protagonist/deuteragonist/tritagonist lineup (but that doesnt mean the same lineup won’t be used multiple times!) and yes the insane list of OCs are for this au alone: some arcs are very OC-centric, some have OCs as supporting characters, and a couple are all-OC or mostly-OC. 

its going to be very longform and it’ll span from the tallest’s elite training days to twenty years after zim arrives on earth. (the 20 year gap btwn zim arriving on earth and the story proper isnt as tightly plotted as later tho.) the point is to see how a revolution on the scale of the NDR works, who was fucked over by defact laws, who was fucked over by other laws, etc. theres a lot of lore and a lot of headcanons i made for this AU and even a conlang. i am a being of hubris. itll be a series of fics, some multichapter and some oneshots. 

the series as a whole is gonna be called Invader Zim: Annexed or just Annexed for short. its a pun on an irken word that sounds similar but means the exact opposite. i am not explaining more bc itll be explained in the fic itself. but thats why the tag for it is #anx lmao

i didnt mean for this to be as long as it got but under the cut im gonna breakdown some of the early arcs:

so it all starts with a fanfic called Love Is The H-Word (no the “h-word” isn’t “hell.) it centers around red and purple as elites-in-training, who do a little whoopsie and have an egg. purple doesnt wanna smuggle it into a smeetery, bc then he’ll never see it again, so they go to the defect sanctuary (still a part of the empire at this point.) purple knows he’s defective while red has a hard time accepting that he is as well, due to events from his past. but being around all these other defects are starting to wear down his denial, and the fic is all about that. it also sets up some plot stuff, like how defects adopted a self-identifier in the word “heretic,” hence the sanctuary being named, “heretirk.” (hey look my url!) (no, the “h-word” is not heretic, either.) 

i dont wanna say what happens in that fic bc spoilers, but stuff Happens. its also when we meet some ocs that end up being important, and the existence of others are foreshadowed. this is also where we meet the tallests’ future advisor, rarl kove, for the first time, as a local who decides to keep them company. purple bonds with kove due to their shared interest in politics, while red reluctantly bonds with titch, a young irken (a smeet in heretirken standards, an adult in imperial standards- did i mention he and red are roughly the same age? lol) who is interested in military stuff and thrill-seeking and general destruction. titch is pissed because he claims his father is stealthing on devastis as a military commander, but won’t let titch sneak in as a soldier, as titch is deaf. 

(fun facts: in the au, “titch” is regional slang for “a little bit.” ironically, titch the character is above-average in height.)

due to titch’s deafness, he developed “gesturespeak,” irken sign language, so he can communicate. this existing becomes important later

a oneshot called invade the system is right after h-word in publishing order. it details zim’s exploits in leaving foodcourtia, where he was assigned and infiltrating the invading academy he eventually graduates from (in this au, zim is too short to be an invader, which sucks because the hight minimums for the military are really short to begin with lmao)

the fic chronoligically after H-Word focuses on red and purple being back in their platoon on devastis, specifically red navigating his training and his relationships with two defective platoonmates, pon and zi (who are in h-word a little,) after the realization that he too is defective. it also focuses on how the irken military works, and how they train their soldiers. 

the first arc overall focuses on red and purple going thru training and such, and ends after they graduate and are on the field, working to get commander rank. (they planned to gain commander rank then leave and go back to heretirk to train an army there, as heretirk has.... no army.) in the middle of this, they’re pulled out and told they are to become the next tallest. they debate over staying and taking the job or just running to heretirk, and they ultimately decide to stay.

the next arc i call the “bridge,” tbh. its less tightly plotted than the other arcs; fics are spread apart from each other chronologically and all that. it spans the time after the tallest being appointed to a little after zim arrives on earth. it also has a couple of anthologies focusing on imperial defects- each chapter is a new character. these guys are all important and the easiest way for me to introduce their backstories without cluttering everything up is anthology style, lmao. other things that happen are a look into how the tallest work, eventually culminating with the resolution of the tallest having to Deal With Heretirk, tenn’s rescue from meekrob, and zim on earth obtaining a half-irken smeet named pip due to stealing an Unethical Science Experiment from dib (which is pip.) the bridge is basically just. “heres some stuff that happens between point A and point B so when we get to point B you’re not confused as all hell.” 

the next arc focuses on zim. in the first fic, pip is sick and zim is trying to get into his neighbor’s pants, to cope. this basically sets up that zim in this au has no idea how to find personal fulfillment in living- he’s only OK if he focuses on pleasing someone else, be it taking care of pip or doting on the neighbor, some rando human named piqu (pronounced, “peek.”) this is mainly a cute romance story with the underlying veneer of “a child is slowly and painfully dying” in the background. fun! 

without spoiling the circumstances, zim and pip end up on heretirk, which at this point is its own independent planet. pip is in the hospital for most of it so zim has to do his own thing. computer fans rejoice bc hes basically zims dad at this point, who tells him to go outside and get some fresh air and talk to the locals instead of schmooping or screaming in anxiety. im sneakily introducing more characters like ini, the “next-gen zim;” a short bio-engineer (she works on PAKs) who was constantly passed over by everyone because they dont trust someone that short or they dont trust someone that spazzy, even though shes actually brilliant. also her brother mo, who’s a pilot that NOBODY will teach military-class ships to (at this point, HTK has a population of ex-military that had their old ships, but still no formal army) because he doesnt talk and they think hes “slow” as a result. for the curious, he is physically able to talk most times, he just doesnt like it. zim ends up teaching him how to fly military-class which ends up being important laterrr

(haha ini and mo. wheres meenie and minie? ILL GET TO THEM)

no really, theyre quadruplets. named ini, myni, minie, and mo. these are real characters. 

minie isnt introduced till later. shes too cool to be the side character in someone elses arc. she is feel uncomfortable when we are not about her.

myni is busy palling around with pip and pip’s friend “elly” (real name elevenn, with two N’s.) elly is a half-meekrob War Crime Baby and tenn’s smeet. he has vision problems (he can “see” energy signatures of things, as opposed to conventional sight. everything is monochrome and he has to really focus to see like, words on a paper. also fuck tablets) but the trade-up is telekinetic powers (that he cant use too much or his brain will melt. fun!) this isnt relevant until the arc AFTER zim’s, where they end up poking around a historical site due to myni’s interest in that kind of thing, and they find logs of an old revolution (that was actually pretty successful in their goal, before they were caught and executed,) that lead them to a man named lefy. he helps with revolutions and helped these guys, and the trio go to seek him out; myni because he wants to impress his parents with helping them, pip because after they’ve recovered enough to walk around and do stuff, feel like they need to justify the choice to save their life and make their dad proud and all that, elly because he doesnt want pip to get hurt and die. And thats where the stuff REALLY starts happening and i cant tell u more sorry

this seemed kind of disjointed but thats bc i cant really be too detailed otherwise id like.... spoil it lmfao. but thats the summary of the first few arcs.

I h8 W/J a hell of a lot but after Jes meeting Astrid a few ppl started shipping them and understandably Astrid is probably unlikely to use Jes as an emotional/psychological crutch like Cleb but isn't the the age difference between Astrid + Jes the same as W/J, I'm not excusing/pro W/J it's juts that while ppl have pointed out the age gap problem for W/J (that being one of big reasons to feel uncomfortable w/ it) but they're ignoring it in the (all be it joking) possibility of AJ. I hope this hasn't come of as rude, I'm just not certain abt the concept and I think I might have missed details or smth so I was wondering what you thought

I think a/j developed as a crackship, bc tbh if it has to be that J redeems someone w the power of romantic love etc I'd rather it be A than C bc we don't get any queer stories like that where another woman's unconditional acceptance helped another woman come to the realisation that she needs to sort out her priorities and do better by herself... that there is kindness to the world afterall and I don't mean that J has to walk A's hand thru this or smth but I doubt A would view J in the double negative of infantilization/worshippy eyes that C does. W/J is the same mpdg trope being done to death by m/f ships everywhere where the woman's role is reduced to emotional support for the man Only.

I am quite confident the buildup would be different and nicer and again, like you said: it's unlikely that A would use J as an emotional/psychological crutch so on A/J it's different bc making both of them queer also presents a different perspective on things. and again, I doubt A would view J as the romantic interest who is a bandaid to her problems, like C does. even in the limited encounters we've had w her, I'm confident enough to state that she'd have a much more nuanced perspective on things. and falling in love w J would be more happenstance, not 'love at first sight' kinda deal that C views it as. doubt A would look at J as the emotional balm to her self-flagellation. doubt A wouldn't treat J right, given time and patience and self-healing that is, again, A's progress almost all by herself, nudged only w some helpful encouragements from J. again this is all conjecture, of course. we all see what we want to see.

but mainly, I just think it would be VERY FUNNY if C's ex-gf and his current romantic prospect (who is also a woman)... just Mako'd his ass and got with each other instead, korrasami style. I just think that'd be hilarious. (and Neat.)

as for the age difference... I agree age differences are wack, no arguments w you there. it's just that the ship that simply Did Not have any Age Difference Issues was B and J. B is 23/24 and J is 22/23. which makes their dynamic much more on equal ground. F is also 30+ as is Y, who I imagine is in her 33+ as well, bc the woman who plays her has explicitly stated that Y is in the same age bracket as her own self.

So that makes the w/w relationship that is most likely to go canon... have the same age gap as W/J. and ppl still ship it; it is widely celebrated and is the cause of much rejoice. the difference however, I think. boils down to how Y doesn't see B as a bandaid for her problems. doesn't see her as someone who can 'fix' her sadness. Y is also plagued by her past but had taken proactive steps herself towards betterment all by herself and it's been a bumpy ride but not once does she romanticize her own grief . and THAT, I think, is where the difference btwn B/Y and W/J lies.

all this to say, A/J would be iconic of J from the standpoint of not only expressing her own agency, but also as an absolute Legend Move where she completely disregards all this "top-table loves J" nonsense and is blatantly brave enough to romance a Mercer NPC when no one else was.

I have been getting a LOT of asks lately. It seems like every reply I post spurs on a new wave of asks. XD While I love answering Kalafina-related questions the sheer amount of asks is slowly starting to get a bit intimidating. There are times when I am feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. I literally spent the entire weekend writing replies even though I had planned to work on something entirely different. You might wonder why I am telling you all of that. It’s not meant to make you feel bad, I am happy people are curious about Kalafina! I am definitely not asking you to stop sending me questions! I really enjoy sharing my Kala-knowledge. I am also not planning to close my inbox or anything, that really wouldn’t feel right. But there IS something I would like to ask of you! Many of the questions I receive are direct responses to posts I make. Instead of sending an ask would it be possible for you to comment on said post? I know, it requires you to have an account and it takes away the anonymity but it would make life so much easier for me. And in most cases such as this one I don’t see why you would feel the need to hide your identity. Plus, it would keep things better contained. Right now I am often replying to multiple asks about the exact same topic. That can get pretty tiring, not just for myself but also for all the people who follow my blog. Okay, that’s it. Well, I have never noticed a “significant” gap in popularity either which is why I wrote that many people underestimate Wakana’s and Hikaru’s popularity but to say that there was NO gap would be an outright lie. Let’s be frank here, from a superficial point of view Keiko IS without a doubt the most “attractive” Kala-member (especially according to Japanese beauty standards). And as we have already established, Keiko was the one to typically draw the attention to herself. She would be the one taking the lead in interviews, her position was always front and center so naturally people would notice her first.

Kalafina have always had a huge “casual” fanbase, you know, that person that’s usually into idols and randomly discovers Kalafina or your typical otaku who comes across one of Kalafina’s anime tie-ins and then starts to kinda stan them but never really gets too involved. It’s those fans in particular that would often gravitate more towards Keiko because she represents literally everything they like and dream of. This actually applies to a majority of foreign fans as well. Only a fraction of foreign fans delves deeper into the world of Kalafina, for most of them Kalafina is defined by two things only: “epic anisongs and a cute girl with a hime-cut���. It’s sad but true…

That is why I can say with some certainty that Keiko has definitely always been “the most popular” in the grand scheme of things.

Kalafina’s super loyal fans are a completely different story though. I would say the members are equally popular among the core fanbase.I might even go as far as to say that Keiko is the least popular but I have no numbers to prove it.

As for my fave, I actually mentioned it in the post you are referring to. I am a big fat Keiko-stan, always have been, always will be. But for me having a favourite is not really changing anything. I honestly love and respect them all and I try my very best to never neglect any of them. But yeah, sometimes I tend to focus too heavily on Keiko XD

based on background details from the various movies, i’ve concluded that there is a substantial (if not huge) number of orphans on the isle of the lost. after all, the living conditions are pretty awful and there’s a lot of crime. ppl die.

she was seven when her biological parents died--old enough to remember them, but not old enough to remember much.

her biological parents were small-time baddies: think highway bandits or petty criminals who targeted the wrong people and subsequently got themselves booted onto the isle of the lost.

gothel’s been as close to a mother as imogen ever got. old and sickly, gothel took the girl in, deciding to raise her up for a few years and then use her as her personal cook/maid/errand runner.

imogen grew up basically a servant. as a child, she would tell herself that someone would come for her just like flynn rider came for rapunzel, but no one ever came.

gothel kept her on a tight leash. after losing such an asset in rapunzel, gothel wasn’t about to let someone like imogen get away again.

growing up in gothel’s household made imogen sneaky and resourceful. she got good at hearing footsteps and listening for gothel’s snores. she got accustomed to sneaking out whenever gothel slept and running around the neighborhood kids before sun rose and she had to go back to being a servant in her own home.

having not been under gothel’s thumb her entire like, imogen has a clear enough idea of her worth. she knows that she was not meant to be a servant, and she could never be content with pleasing gothel.

moreover, after seeing how dependence on magic and the work of other people turned gothel into a shadow of a human being, imogen swore to herself never to be dependent on anyone or anything.

imogen never found herself really allying with anybody. she was, at most, a lone wolf with a few people that she trusted.

imogen also ate up what little education there was on the isle, hoping that that would be her way off. she especially loved science and chemistry. imogen’s motto? “science is just magic that anyone can do.”

since she was a kid, imogen was prone to performing little science experiments when nobody was looking. sometimes they’d work well. sometimes they wouldn’t.

it was the result of one of these experiments that left imogen with a spatter of scars on her face. (so imagine her scars are like these bc it’s really hard to find an fc who doesn’t look model perfect)

beauty’s never been important to imogen, but she’s very aware that she would have been perceived as pretty if not for the incident, but since she’s so survival-minded, she doesn’t really care how she looks.

though her science has scarred her, it has also saved her. imogen’s never been much of a fighter, but she’s quick on her feet, and she’s perfected ways to make slingshot ammo and smoke bombs for quick escapes

now that she’s away from home, imogen’s trying very hard to leave her old life behind and prove herself worthy of a spot here. she’s studying hard, and she wants to catch up and graduate auroria university as fast as possible and join society. possibly a career in pharmacy or medicine? who knows, man

she personally is apathetic toward the heroes and the villains coming together. does she think that everything will work out? no. she doesn’t trust the heroes who thought locking literal children away on an island was a good either, and while she’s definitely more sympathetic to isle-dwellers, she doesn’t have much trust there either. she’s in this for herself; at this point, nothing matters more to her than her own survival and success in auradon.

though she’s extremely smart, there’s actually a lot of gaps in imogen’s knowledge:

friendship? what is that? this girl doesn’t exactly know how to make friends or just be pleasant in general. it’s a miracle she has the few people she has.

romance? who is she? imogen’s had her fair share of crushes and hook-ups, but she’s never been in a real relationship.

she will not share, like at all. a whole childhood of going hungry means that imogen will never loan anyone a dress or split the last slice of pie in half because everything is hers

self-destructive as hell. does not know how to take care of herself and step away from a problem. she’s full speed ahead every hour of every day

(im the first knt anon) omg yes the ayane / pin storyline is kinda... like it's true pin does reject her because of the age gap but i still hate that it's there... chizu also has a similar storyline since she is in love w a dude like 10 years older than her who also rejects her but :/ i guess im glad that both storylines end up w the guy being somewhat decent and rejecting them and the girls learning from this but!!! i hate that its never discussed how big age gaps especially btwn a guy in his mid/late tweenties and a high schooler is bad 😭 still sawako and kazehayas story is so good and refreshing theyre the best shoujo couple 💗

wait naur chizu too???having ryu right there?? whats going on with this pattern like trulyfnjfjdj😫😫😫 i guess thats the price we have to pay for the main couple being so wholesome 😫😫😫 yeah, that's what upsets me the most abt the way this trope is used! its like telling these young girls that maybe if theyre lucky (and if they work rly hard) they can go out with the old dude of their dreams. it is never abt showing how bad and dangerous this dynamic naturally is. like ughhhh please take care of your audience 🦧 BUT ANYWAY !!!! i just LOVE how kazehaya is the only who noticed sawako first!!!! hes the one crushing on her since the entrance ceremony !!!!!! more shoujo heroines deserve this
