As much as Val is one, I hate the deadwife sadman trope for how it turns the characters wife into a cardboard prop that only exists to give them manpain. Laura is very much a fully realized character, though as I mostly focus on postwar stuff here I don't talk about her nearly as much as I should.

They started as a very unethical fwb relationship while she was his attourney, but as she got to know him and realized how fucking weird he was she was compelled to keep him around and observe him like a bug in a jar. She domesticated him.
