Everyone in the office thinks that Emmett, my mad m. s/i, is in love with Joan. And that's true, since in S1 he spends all his time blatantly admiring her. (And for the rest of the show too). Including Joan, who does think he's lovely. But the thing is, he'd never fit into her ambitions. Major show spoilers btw.

Joan is chasing the "dream". Her idea of success is to get married to a handsome man who can provide for her, so she can leave the work place forever. This is what she wants more than anything. Emmett isn't able to do that for her. And they both know that, so there's no way she would ever choose him. No matter how much they may like each other.

Joan does go on to marry a man who does fit that bill. However, like all aspects of the american dream, it doesn't work out the way she thought it would. Especially not in a decade where society is starting to undergo a drastic change. Despite this, and the slight resentment Emmett has, he supports her through everything.

Meanwhile, he becomes best friends with Ken. They're similar but contrasting in the way Ken shamelessly flirts around while Em seems stuck on unrequited love, but they're both gentle creatives at their core. It's unclear exactly when Em falls in love with Ken, but it's likely sooner rather than later. Once again he fell for someone who won't want him, but he really doesn’t care.

This continues for a painfully long time (like 4 seasons!). It's a stalemate it seems until one day Ken abruptly discovers two things - 1, Em likes men, and 2, that Ken feels jealous of the guy he just saw him kiss. Cue gay panic and confusion. He eventually confronts Em about all of this and the two come to terms with the fact the feelings have been mutual for a very long time. Their exploration of their romantic attraction to each other begins.

Joan is one of the first, and only ones, to learn of this development. Since its the 60s, they go with the whole "roommates" thing as a cover, and cus they've always been close like that it goes unnoticed. Meanwhile, Joanie gets her divorce (and her baby), and she has a conversation with Em about regrets. Namely that she wishes she had chosen him, which causes Em to get angry.

They have an open and honest conversation about their feelings about love and relationships. Joan realizes now that the only way she would be with someone again is if she really loves them, something which she's not sure she's ever experienced. And Em reveals he never cared about relationships or sex either way, and that he's never slept with Ken despite their romantic relationship. Em and Joan are just happy to have each other in their lives, even if their feelings aren't exactly romantic. Em did feel that way for her once, but the years have changed that. They both grew and moved on.

The series ends with Ken and Em supporting Joan in her new business and single motherhood. Em joins her company as creative director, and Ken continues his career as a writer. And they both help Ken adjust to going blind in one eye too.

LoZ: TotK - No, Gerudo Aren't All Lesbians

I remember hearing someone, not gonna say who, saying that all Gerudo are lesbians.

And I just...

No...

Let's start off with the fact that that is biologically impossible. Their entire race would've died off thousands of years ago. I mean, there are a bunch of lesbians who, by default, would absolutely refuse to have sex with a man on principle. Who would be repulsed by the very prospect of it. Even with the idea of it just being for reproduction's sake. Some even refuse to go through artificial insemination out of sheer loathing for men in-general.

Which, BTW, that is some serious misandry right there.

Then, let's keep in mind the fact that the Gerudo are based off the Middle East.

Homosexuality is literally a crime punishable by death there.

The person who said this suggested that they only have sex with men in order to reproduce & it pissed me off.

Do you have any idea just how cruel that'd be to the men they'd be convincing to marry them? To later learn that they're love isn't reciprocated? That they're trapped in loveless marriages?

ALL of them?

Think about how cruel that is to Hudson!

And not just the men, but their poor daughters!!

I can't even imagine the amount of resentment this would foster!

Not to mention, if this were the case, then it would become common knowledge, which would cause a decent portion of men to absolutely refuse to get into romantic relationships with them, because what's the point of putting your heart on the line for a romance that will never, can never, be reciprocated?

If anything, due to their biological situations, it's more likely that there would be an even bigger bias against homosexuality than in Muslim culture, which, may I remind you, being gay warrants the death penalty there!

Think about it! Their entire society relies on as many of them leaving their homes to venture out into the greater world & find husbands as is absolutely possible! Because they can't find a husband at home! And husbands mean children & children mean that their society continues!

After all, keep in mind that it's apparently already happened at least once in Wind Waker. It can absolutely happen again if they aren't careful! Which may actually be part of why it's become such a central focus of their race's culture, actually.

I would also say in Twilight Princess, but according to the official timeline, the Gerudo didn't die out, they were simply exiled from Hyrule for Ganondorf's actions in the Child Timeline. (Four Swords Adventure)

The sheer amount of pressure to get married & have kids must be INSANE!! Even more so than in the 50s & 60s.

I wouldn't be surprised if spinsters are looked down upon as pariahs. Failures.

Though, that's just the cultural significance of it from a realistic standpoint.

Now, I'm sure that there are at least some lesbian Gerudo, but I just don't see them being so readily accepted unless, say, Gerudo are bisexual by default, which while not likely, I think is far, far more possible than them all being gay by default is.

Besides, them all being gay is canonically incorrect. After all, a large number of the Gerudo you end up meeting are searching for men for romance!

(And don't say that "oh, they're still finding themselves." This individual said ALL Gerudo are lesbians. Period. Which would mean that them being gay wouldn't be a matter of finding one's self. It'd be a matter of fact. Thus, there'd be nothing to find.)

They say themselves that they're looking for true love. Hell, the old lady in the back alleys of the town in the last game says herself that she regretted not having found her true love!

If they aren't interested in men romantically, why say that they're searching for love, specifically?

Why not just say they're looking for a donor?

And why even get married in that case? Just "wham, bam, thank you, sir" & be done with it.

Why would a man even accept? Again, a loveless marriage! One that, in the long run, would just end with everyone involved absolutely miserable!

Unless, the Gerudo don't tell their spouses? In which case, that is ridiculously manipulative & absolutely disgusting. It's essentially rape.

I just... The implausibility of this take is insane!

At the same time, they could've been joking. I mean, they didn't sound like it, but to be fair, I'm autistic & tend to take things literally. I've been trying to get better at that, but it's very possible that I missed the tone shift.

So, if you do end up finding them, don't get onto them too hard. I could've misinterpreted things.

*uhm so i really like sticking to the time periods of thinhs so i try my best to reflect that on my hcs 👍*

ok my hcs:

- so pretty much the bisexual agenda wasnt nearly as prevalent in the 1960s-1970s as it is now and being gay was a HUUUGE taboo at the time (these aren’t hcs these r facts look me up) but anyways jack and felix are hella gay 4 each other but basically they don’t acknowledge it and they wouldn’t ever… and this is like at the beginning of the business

- i dont use punctuation so im making this a separate bullet point but it still goes w the other stuff ,, but jack and felix met at a bar (not a gay bar bc those werent popularized until the 70s and they were rlly secret i think) and they met in their twenties and that would be around 1950s or early 60s

- in the current canon timeline (early 70s) jack is around 47-50 when he goes missing and felix is 45

-jack and felix exchange telephone numbers at said bar and frequently visit each other and become closer and closer

- both are in college, attending the same school but having different majors

- while away at school, jack meets rosemary and they have a brief relationship but nothing serious, they end it off and jack is crushed

-felix comes over when he finds out about the breakup and then ig they do shrooms or sumn to kinda numb the pain and they end up making out but it’s not gay bc they’re high hashtag no homo pride month is over guys

- this is the same sleepover where they come up w the idea for bunny smiles,,, like they don’t remember anything from that night except for the idea of creating a restaurant with creepy ass animatronics

-felix was just cracking a joke while they were high as balls but jack actually really liked the idea and thinks about it and keeps being it up and felix is like “i wasnt actually serious, who would wanna go there anyways 😐” so he keeps bugging felix and eventually talks him into it and bounce around ideas

- anyways time gap bc im inconsistent and it’s midnight n im tired anyways they’re like 30s now but they are at a bar after a long day of planninh n working and they run into rosemary (felix doesn’t really like her bc hes in love w jack but he’s not outwardly rude to her like hes just passive aggressive like she’ll be like “i had a lovely day” and hell be like “yeah i bet you did 🙄”) and jack is HEAD OVER HEELS FOR HER… but long story short rose got pregnant and the father dipped and they go out for a couple months and a while later jack proposes and rose says yes

-the baby is obv sophie btw she doesn’t know jack isnt her bio father bc he raised her like i said the bio father dipped and that’s why she has brown hair instead of black hair like her parents

- jack and felix begin to fall out of their lil bestie friendship and transition towards a more businesslike relationship and felix HATES this bc he’s literally in love w jack

-felix goes to bar alone one night to wallow in his misery and gets hella drunk and meets linda and then they get date and get married but felix uses linda kinda as like a flex (for lack of a better word) to make it look like he’s pulling ladies too when he’s really not happy with her at all but linda really likes him

-anyways felix starts to get stressed as the restaurant idea is making major progress and starts drinking more and linda is NOT HAVING IT she hates it

-the root of felixs alcoholism is bc he’s in love with jack and then linda leaves and he goes wild #emo

-felix feels neglected when he comes to jack for help bc he’s always busy with the kids (edd and molly are babies and sophie is like 6 idk i’m too tired to calculate that)

- anyways felix is gay and jack is bi if we’re talking modern terms like felix definitely definitely liked boys 100% but wasnt like ✨ 💅 fruity like you wouldn’t have known especially since he had a wife

-jack never admitted it but he def had feelings for felix but he ultimately chose rose over him and like i said their friendship faded into more of a business partnership (dick move i know, bracing myself for slander bc felix didn’t deserve that)

im also quite a fan of jackfelixrose but im too lazy to write lore for that and it seems a little too out of canon bc polygamy was HELLA TABOO along w homosexuality,,, uhhhh if anyone sees this lmk if u want to hear more of my dumbass brainrot

Comrades! You need, NEED, to watch the movie “Radioactive”. Apart from Rosamund Pike being amazing and the film being directed by a woman, Marjane Satrapi, the film is not only a great story about a great woman BUT, since she and her husband basically discovered radiations, in the movie are shown also short scenes of the consequences of their discoveries: a boy with cancer cured by a new radiation machine in the 50s, the first atomic bomb on Japan at the end of the II War, Americans in the 60s doing nuclear test in the desert and laughing at how realistic the the mannequins and the buildings in the explosion zone are while people pay 50 cents to sit there with sunglasses and watch the atomic bomb explode, AND OF COURSE CHERNOBYL: I recognized it even before the subtitle came out because we see a young and scared but heroic firefighter entering a burning building and helping out men dressed in white with strange hat (the fucking hats, comrades). Later in the movie we see Marie Curie having sort of dreams/nightmares/visions in which she sees her dead loved ones but also the different consequences of her work: the kid fighting chancer thanks to a new therapy based on her discoveries, a Japanes man in a hospital after the Hiroshima explosion and finally she walks to another hospital chamber where she sees a young man in a bed and it’s the young Chernobyl firefighter. She sits next to him, takes his hand and kisses his forehead and the boy, despite having his face burnt by radiations, smiles at her. Maybe not the best movie of the year but it’s a must see in my humble opinion.

Thanks a lot for finally making me sit my ass down and watch this movie.

It’s remarkable in many ways. Not only was it directed by the great Marjan Satrapi (and who doesn’t like Rosamund Pike in roles of strong independent women) but also its music is dreamlike as well as nightmarish and very fitting of the film’s subject matter. If radiation was beautiful electronic music, it would sound like this soundtrack.

Strangely enough the male characters, even if they’re forced to stay in the background, are not complete puppets paving the way for Marie’s brilliance. They’re supportive but flawed, likeable without being too mushy, or forcefully annoying like we’ve seen in many recent “feminist” films. Instead of screaming “MALE PRIVILEGE!!1″ all the time like in most American movies, they’re silently entitled, like in real life. 

The “nice men” in the story  are such feminists that they clear the table while their wives have scientific conversations..

… or hand them napkins while the women explain Uranium’s chemical reactions.

Beware, for the hurt in these men’s eyes is real. 

If I were a tad more cynical I’d call it a feminist-retconning chick flick but the movie is too good for that.

It also gives us some great lines.

Marie: “An instinct is not a particularly scientific reason.”

Pierre: “No, but it’s still a reason.”

Frankly,  I find the dialogues and the whole script quite lively. A breath of fresh air. Even when they’re bickering “like an old married couple”, Marie and Pierre sound brilliant.

The film also has beautiful “encyclopedic” illustrations like uranium here.

More scientific/poetic imagery, like young Marie forming the atom with berries in her basket…

… or radioactivity presented as a dancer bathed in an eerie green glow.

Thankfully, Marie and Pierre’s flirtation is not cringey at all. When he proposes to her, she kisses him. 

Pierre: “You’re not selfish. You’re just… self-absorbed.”

(why thank you, Pierre, didn’t know this movie talks about moi )

More of those “omg did I ghost write this?” moments.

And yes, the movie almost feels like a distant relative to HBO’s Chernobyl, like The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to Chernobyl’s Harry Potter. 

For instance, Pierre gets his “Boris moment” as he coughs blood into his handkerchief, minutes before he receives their Nobel prize.

Marie gets her Spartacus/”You will do it because it must be done” moment when women in the audience give her a standing ovation as she receives her second Nobel prize.

The juxtaposition between Pierre’s acceptance speech (”Radiation is both useful and extremely dangerous if it falls in the wrong hands, but MOSTLY USEFUL”) and the drop of Enola Gay is beautiful and haunting. 

And ooooh, there it is (hey, did someone steal the Renck Bros’ font?).

Btw, Marie Curie died of aplastic anemia, guess you remember that one, huh.

And if you’re still wondering why everyone looks familiar in this film, like, Chernobyl- familiar, I’ll give you a clue.

Marie’s sister,  Bronia Sklodowska, is played by Sian Brooke.

Yes, THAT Sian Brooke.

Marie’s Mother is played by Georgina Rich.

Come on, GEORGINA RICH?

Last but not least, Marie’s fellow scientist, Paul Langevin, is played by Aneurin Barnard…

what's up with mad men

honestly what the hell is going on with the show mad men; I try to figure a 7 season show 5 episodes in...

Good morning, good evening, whats up, hello, let’s get into it because I did not understand a  thing from the 5 episodes I watched and I need to talk about it somewhere (basically the group chat is not answering so I will talk to myself). 

also spoilers(????) i guess. 

Mad men was a show that aired on CNBCE in Turkey and it frequented the midnight section of the channel making it obvious that it was an adult show. Hence the reason why I’m accustomed to the visuals so much. But fortunately I did not watch it while it was airing and had to watch it now for an assignment. I’m sure if I had watched it while I was between the ages 10-13 there would be consequences.

I watched the first episode for the assignment and 4 more to understand just what the hell was happening but I’m still a bit lost. First of all why is nobody communicating in 60s? Is it because of the new and upcoming technology being scary or is it because men had to have sticks showed up at their asses in the 60s or, is because they are simply cold blooded corporate men? 

The main character is Don Draper, a great name for the charismatic ***** magnet he is. We get to know him as the star of his company. He is quick witted, charismatic and a person to both admire and get jealous of. He is also very attractive so there’s that. It almost seems like he is the stereotypical perfect guy with commitment issues on the side BUT as the episodes go along he starts to feel like someone who is not likeable in the slightest, still, I wish I had his job.

(did i mention how the first episode ends with him going back to his wife and kids after fucking around that much yeah)

The plot is a bit foggy I think we are just watching how Don’s life is falling apart slowly and I’m guessing the later seasons will be about how he redeems himself and picks up the pieces. Overall, I am really uncomfortable with the patriarchy, racism and the anti-semitism that is showcased and knowing it was once (and still is) real I am depressed thank you very much. 

Women on the show are not the mess with though. Especially the ones that chase after careers that are not yet available to them. The show makes a sharp distinction between the women who ‘chose’ to get married and the ones who were ‘forced’ to get jobs. Married women almost act like they have been brainwashed to be the way they are which is scary but accurate. Don’s wife Betty seems to be content with not working and looking after the kids and gossiping all day long but things are not as it seems and I think she knows more than she lets on. Still, I think Betty is a character that chooses to ignore the obvious just to keep up the image of happiness, also she is definitely going to die. It’s a hunch and I don’t want to get spoilers but I feel like the frozen hands thing is more than anxiety. There are also permanent strong characters like Joan and Peggy. Peggy is the new girl and therefore she is an eye candy while Joan is the object of desire in the office and uses it to her advantage. I would say Peggy is the small town girl with a massive pride and Joan is a maneater. The men at the office are portrayed as predatory (which they are btw) but Joan uses it to her advantage while Peggy is a bit goody two-shoes and wants to get everything straight all the time. 

Honestly Peggy save yourself from these men girl I am begging you.

The office men... Especially Pete Campbell what the hell, and, his group of bozos fuck you. I usually love it when a bunch of losers flock together but this might be a little too toxic for me. Pete is more reoccurring from the rest so I hate him the most but the others are just as worse. They feel like a frat that moved onto professional jobs together and forgot to grow up. 

Pete has severe daddy issues and we see him struggle to feel good about himself because he is aware that what he does is not that much and I’m suspecting that he’s aware that the only reason he has the job is because of his family’s connections. He is jealous of Don and wants his job but I don’t think his problem is really about Don. He just wants to show daddy and mommy and the bozos he thinks he is above that he is worth more than they think. Which, for now, is not true, he is a loser if I’ve ever seen one. Also goddamn treat your wife right for once she isn’t there to be the one who handles your temper tantrums. 

While we are on the topic, why do I need to know the lore about Pete’s wife, what was it Trutie? I don’t care about this woman’s rocky love life with her ex. I get that Pete has nothing going on for him and this is the nail in his coffin.

Lastly, almost every episode ends with an establishing shot and I’m all for it. tell me things that will unravel soon into the season but I don’t understand yet. Feed me the chaos. Tell me things will only get worse for Don. Get me all stressed and tense about made up characters’ future. I love it.

Sure!

First of all, Oscar Wilde. Morrissey repeatedly namechecked him as his favourite author. Personally, I’ve only read “The Portrait of Dorian Gray”, “De Profundis” and “The Uncollected Oscar Wilde”. If you haven’t yet read anything of his, I’d suggest you start with Dorian Gray.

Then of course, Elizabeth Smart. I’ve previously talked about how Morrissey used her novella “By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept” as a source of inspiration for many of his songs. She also wrote a sequel called “The Assumption Of The Rogues & Rascals”, which I didn’t think was as good, but it’s still relatively short and you can easily read it in one sitting once you get used to her somewhat flamboyant writing style. I’ve also got a copy of her diaries, which is called “Necessary Secrets”, but I haven’t read it yet.

Next, we have Shelagh Delaney. In 1986, Morrissey said: “I’ve never made any secret of the fact that at least 50 per cent of my reason for writing can be blamed on Shelagh Delaney.“ The lyrics of This Night Has Opened My Eyes are a retelling of the plot of her play “A Taste of Honey“, with many direct quotes. She’s even on the cover of Louder Than Bombs! Unfortunately, I haven’t read any of her works.

Then we have A. E. Housman, a poet. I’ve talked about his role on Morrissey’s writing here.

No biographers (that I know of) ever mentioned him, and the connection might be tenuous, but I’m gonna include him anyway: W. H. Auden. Specifically, his poem “The Mirror and the Sea”. I’ve explained why here.

Then of course, Hermann Melville. Specifically “Billy Budd”, but also “John Marr and Other Poems”. You can check out his poem “John Marr and Other Sailors” here.

Radclyffe Hall. Specifically, her novel “The Well of Loneliness”, which is one of the best, most heartwrenching LGBT books I’ve ever read. I’m not gonna spoil the plot for you, but I urge you to read it if you have the chance.

Alan Bennett. I’ve wanted to read some of his stuff for years and quite a few people recommended him to me, but I’ve yet to get down to it. The line “That’s what tradition means” in I Started Something… was taken from his play “Forty Years On”, and the title Alsatian Cousin also comes from there, with the original line being: “I was distantly related to the Woolf family through some Alsatian cousins”. Also, and this is the most interesting part imo, his TV play “Me, I’m Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, which is about a subtle gay love story, contains the line “Nature has a language, you see, if only we’d learn to read it”, which was no doubt used by Morrissey as inspo for Ask. (”Nature is a language, can’t you read?”).

John Betjeman, another poet. I haven’t read anything of his, but it’s said that his poem “Slough” was the main source of inspiration for Everyday Is Like Sunday. Funfact: he was bi and a disciple of Oscar Wilde.

Jean Cocteau. French poet, writer, playwright, artist and filmmaker. The cover of This Charming Man was sourced from his film Orphée and the cover of Hatful of Hollow was taken from a special edition of the French newspaper Libération, commemorating the 20th anniversary of his death. I’ve been wanting to read “The White Book” for a while but I can’t find it anywhere, and I feel like it would be very interesting to get even further insight on Morrissey’s psyche.

Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italian writer, poet and filmmaker. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read anything of his (I did visit his grave tho!). Anyway, Morrissey mentions him in You Have Killed Me and - indirectly - in Life Is A Pigsty, (the title probably coming from his movie Porcile, which is Italian for Pigsty). Definitely check him out if you have the chance, he lived a very interesting albeit tragic life and he’s still seen as an important, pioneering if not controversial figure here in Italy.

Popcorn Venus. This is a 1973 feminist film study by Marjorie Rosen. Morrissey used several films which the text refers to as song titles. Namely, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Little Man, What Now?, Angel, Ange, Down We Go [Together]. When talking about the 60s ‘beach-party’ genre (don’t ask me what that is, I literally have no idea), there’s a quote that goes: “How immediately can we be gratified? How soon is ‘now’?”, which Morrissey probably used as inspo for his eponymous song. Rosen also describes Anita Ekberg ‘reeling around the fountain’ in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.Other possible lyrical sources in the book may include: “Who would subjugate whom? Who would crack the whip?” (Handsome Devil), “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the flame of women’s rage” (These Things Take Time).

From Reverence To Rape. 1974 book by American film critic Molly Haskell.Morrissey borrowed several lines from it, including:“[she] double-crossed him, not once but twice.” (Miserable Lie)“But even then she knew where she had come from and where she belonged” (These Things Take Time)“Samantha Eggar who, as Terence Stamp’s captive, is pinned and mounted like one of his butterflies” (Reel Around The Fountain)“Films like Mr. Skeffington oscillate wildly in mood” (Oscillate Wildly)“Each woman will be half a person” (Half A Person).

Finally… I’ve kept this one for last because I just found out about it as I was writing this and I find it EXTREMELY interesting and revealing:

George Eliot. Born Mary Anne Evans, she chose a male pen name to be taken seriously by the 19th century male-dominated literary establishment.Morrissey quoted from her most famous work, Middlemarch, in How Soon Is Now?, adapting its line: “Born the son of a Middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular.”Now, here comes the part I find most interesting… I’m just gonna fully quote it from Mozipedia (which btw is where I found most of the info I collected here):“Eliot spent much of her adult life in a then scandalous relationship with critic and philosopher George Henry Lewes who, technically, was still married to another woman.The vinyl run-out-groove of Morrissey’s 1990 single Piccadilly Palare also contained the cryptic message that ‘George Eliot knew’.”… now, I don’t know about you, but I definitely have my own ideas of what exactly is that George Eliot ‘knew’ and why Morrissey thought it was important to let people know about it, but I digress.

Random Rant about Princess Diana, Prince Charles, and Camilla

Okay, so despite being a gauche, socially progressive American who really doesn’t get why monarchies exist anymore, I am kind of a low-key royal watcher/follower. I was a HUGE fan of/admirer of Princess Diana when I was a little girl and am still a fan of hers in many ways.

But I’m also a fan of Charles and Camilla.

“But how???? Charles and Camilla ruined Diana’s life! They are eeeevil!!!!”

First of all, NO.

Diana Spencer had intense issues way before she hooked up with Charles, for one thing. Her parents had a bitter divorce and custody battle that basically ravaged her childhood. Seriously, at one point her dad was practically holding her hostage away from her mother during Christmas. You think the Wales divorce was messy?... It was. But it was basically just a sequel to Spencer family drama.

By Diana’s own words, she struggled with bulimia from her adolescent years and had severe abandonment issues.

Ever wonder why William’s pet cause is mental health? DIANA IS WHY.

She also grew up among a very specific “set” that included the royal family. She and her sister were playmates to Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. She grew up with the same weirdo aristocratic approach to marriage as them as well which was: pop out an heir and spare, then do whatever.

While she was young and naive and apparently did have a HUGE crush on Charles that resulted in her buying into the fairy tale narrative, she wasn’t the total shrinking violet/know-nothing people sometimes make her out to be. Diana thought she’d be the exception. She was wrong. But she DID enter that marriage with a shit-ton of pre-installed baggage that CHARLES HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH.

Second of all, ALSO NO.

God... This engagement and marriage was made of such crazy fuckery. But Diana was all in, hook, line, and sinker.

Charles, less so. And the situation was just... so fucked, you guys. And, no, sorry, it wasn’t all Charles’s fault. Or Diana’s fault. Or Prince Philip’s fault. But it went like this:

Basically, Chuck was pushing 30, was heir, and had yet to further the royal line, so to speak. It had been nearly a decade since he was formally invested as Prince of Wales. And the issue of him getting hitched had always been... there, but it really got serious as he neared the big 3-0. Especially since his younger sister, Anne, was already married and had a kid. But over the years, he’d had Richard Nixon try to set him up with his daughter and had been geared towards various COUSINS by no less than his “Uncle Dickie” AKA Lord Mountbatten AKA the guy who hooked Prince Philip up with Queen Elizabeth, who was basically Charles’s second Father.

Things got serious as Charles got older, though. Rumors were getting out that he might be gay (remember, this was the late 70′s/early 80′s and Charles is HEIR TO THE THRONE. One factor is/was that Charles is/was a surprisingly progressive dude even then and didn’t bat an eye at employing men who were OPENLY GAY IN THE 70′s. But the thing was, whether or not Charles was gay, if the public believed that, it could have potentially caused a CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS BECAUSE ROYALTY IS ALL OF THE EXTRA)

Charles was into aristocratic blonds... Fine. Perfect... Except for the part where the aristocratic blonds he tended to go for were non-virgins (and therefore completely unsuitable according to his beloved Uncle Dickie)... also married.

...That’s not Camilla, BTW. Camilla was already married to Andrew Parker-Bowles at this point. The lady in the picture there is Lady Dale “Kanga” Tryon, a fashion designer and Charles’s other mistress who actually lived a really interesting life culminating in a super tragic death. We’ll come back to her later.

But basically, Charles had to marry a virginal aristocrat, and fast. So he entered into a sort of courting pool of eligible ladies, at one point dating Lady Sarah Spencer, Diana’s older sister. But Lady Sarah went, “Nah, my sister is WAAAY more into you anyways. Date her.”

Now, if this sounds SUPER CREEPY, ANTIQUATED, AND MESSED UP, EVEN FOR THE 70′S AND 80′S, THAT’S BECAUSE IT IS. THIS IS THE WORLD THESE PEOPLE OPERATED IN, HOWEVER. AND THE ONLY THING MORE INSANE THAN ARISTOCRATS WERE ARISTOCRATS IN THE 70′S AND 80′S. THE ONLY THING MORE INSANE THAN ARISTOCRATS IN THE 70′S AND 80′S WERE THE ONES IN THE 60′S. JUST ASK PRINCESS MARGARET. THIS SHIT IS TAME COMPARED TO THE SHIT CHARLES UNCLE TONY GOT UP TO. POINT IS, THIS WAS WEIRD FROM THE BEGINNING.

Anyways, the two seemed to hit it off, but they were only dating a couple months when the press moved in and started making everything a hundred times crazier. Diana found herself hounded by the press, culminating in the papers slut-shaming her for LITERALLY TAKING AN OVERNIGHT TRIP ON A TRAIN.

This prompted Charles dad, Prince Philip, notorious for choosing his words poorly, basically sending a letter to his son telling him to basically shit or get off the pot before he ruined Diana’s life and reputation. Charles, emotionally stunted and basically terrified of his dad, took this to mean that he HAD to marry her, or he WOULD ruin her life. Keep in mind Diana was SUPER SUPER into him.

WHICH LED TO THIS DISASTER:

Charles went into this marriage feeling bound by duty, figuring Diana was game, that he could make her happy, that he was doing the right thing, and that she’d be along for the ride --- which included the model of marriages they were both used to.

He was VERY WRONG.

Diana went into her marriage completely in love, knowing that Charles had girlfriends, knowing adultery was the norm, believing she’d be a game-changer.

She was technically right, but NOT in the way she imagined. She fell for the fairy-tale Charles thought they were merely selling to the public. She was an emotionally unstable 19-year-old with severe family baggage, and Charles was an emotionally stunted prince with his head shoved right up his royal butt.

What a winner.

THIRD OF ALL, NO.

Remember that Kanga lady from the picture above? Lady Tryon was a business woman and fashion designer. And one of Charles’s mistresses.

She was Camilla’s rival. NOT Diana’s.

See that dress Diana is wearing at Live Aid? Designed by Kanga, Charles’s mistress. Yes, Diana knew who Kanga was and the nature of her relationship with Charles. At this point, Diana was cured of her delusions and was onto her own affairs. She and Kanga became friends and basically allied against Camilla.

At this point, Diana accepted that she and her husband would not be faithful to one another (it’s worth noting that during the early years of their marriage, both of them WERE supposedly faithful. Charles had his last run-in with Camilla the night before the wedding and kept away from both her and Kanga at least until Harry was conceived. But he also basically told Diana at that point that eventually, he’d be bed-hopping again. Basically, he knew Diana would have to be faithful until an heir and spare were produced and seemed to consider it fair play that he not indulge while she couldn’t. If that sounds completely fucked up THAT’S BECAUSE IT WAS). She gradually stopped caring about Charles cheating. She just hated that it was with Camilla. She very quickly embarked on a string of affairs of her own.

----And yes, Charles was a douche. He was also dealing with a wife he did NOT understand who had severe mental health issues.

Diana did things like call Camilla late at night to tell her that there was a man waiting outside, hired to kill her. She would also sometimes abscond with Baby Harry and William without telling Charles or anyone. Not a big deal in a normal family. But they’re royalty. So basically, she was happy to let her husband go into a panic about his sons possibly being kidnapped because he had no idea where the fuck they were. Keep in mind that Charles’s own sister was nearly abducted in 1974 by a gunman and that in 1982, THE VERY YEAR WILLIAM WAS BORN, a man had snuck into the Queen’s bed in the middle of the night carrying a shard of broken glass. So, yeah, Diana grabbing the boys and taking them to Windsor Castle without telling anyone, including her husband? SUPER SHITTY.

Charles tried to get Diana help, but she didn’t trust him whatsoever (because of course she fucking didn’t, no one would). Diana didn’t start getting proper help for her mental health issues until the separation. But she was prone to fits of extreme paranoia and rage, at one point culminating in her physically attacking Charles while he was praying.

Point is, she had a lot of troubles and instabilities. While Charles and Camilla certainly did not HELP, this was shit that went back years and years. Granted, that WAS exacerbated by royal life, but much of that was the strain of royal work --- constant travel, unending media scrutiny, a ton of fame all at once --- and the intense workload she was given when she became Princess of Wales did not help, either. Diana was young, troubled, and had a ton of issues.

BUT

Charles did not ruin her life. Nor did Camilla. Especially since Diana was kind of a badass.

She wasn’t a Rhodes Scholar, but she was a freaking genius at handling the press and an unparalleled activist. And she got some terrific revenge on her cheating husband, too. She nearly bankrupted him in the divorce (Charles had to borrow money from the queen) and turned him into a villain in the eyes of the press.

Once out of royal life, she felt comfortable enough to get help. She got joint custody of the kids. She found great fulfillment in her activism and did some really fantastic things for causes like AIDS and land mines. She had a string of hot, rich boyfriends who spoiled the crap out of her and she was adored the world over by almost EVERYONE. That even included her ex-father-in-law, Prince Philip, who still signed his letters to her as “Pa.”

Charles nor Camilla could NEVER have hoped to ruin her life. She had too much of it. Diana’s life was ruined by a drunk driver, some paparazzi, and a traffic accident.

(And to those who want to claim that the royal family had her killed: kindly fuck off. Mohammed Fayed has had his case dismissed repeatedly despite numerous appeals and investigations. The only way Prince Philip would have had Diana killed would be if he REALLY REALLY wanted to end the monarchy. Somehow I don’t think an exiled prince-turned-royal-consort wants that. There was nothing the royal family wanted more than to see Diana married off to some rich guy and fade into the background. The LAST thing they would want is for Willam and Harry’s mother to die tragically young and cement herself as an eternal legend. Diana’s death was a fucking nightmare for the BRF personally as well as professionally).

Charles and Camilla, meanwhile?

Camilla kept her head down and did quiet work for osteoperosis research after her mother was afflicted with it. Since becoming Duchess of Cornwall, she’s done extensive work on behalf of rape and sexual assault survivors. Among her initiatives was developing “wash bags” consisting of soaps and towels for victims to use after undergoing their rape kits.

Charles spent years being decried as a complete kook for being all worked up over stupid non-issues you might have heard of --- things like “climate change”, “sustainable farming”, “organic foods”, “the ozone layer” and a supposed “housing crisis” in Britain. Oh, and his lifelong project, The Prince’s Trust, is only one of the most important charitable organizations in the Western World.

So yeah, if I have to hear one more comment about EEEEEEVIL Charles and Camilla ruining poor, wilting flower Diana’s life again, I’ll see red. It’s insulting to all three of them.

(Once again, for the record, I think monarchy is outdated and dumb, But if you are going to have one, your heir to the throne should be a Charles. Or a Victoria. But if you can’t have a Victoria, you should have a Charles.)

13. what is a misconception you had about lgb people before you realized you were one?

um firstly, that bisexuals were a thing. I didn’t really know about that. and then like also that bisexuals don’t have to be 50/50. sometimes its 60/40 or 99/1 and thats okay. and also that, you don’t have to identify as anything. also that compulsive heteronormativity is a thing. I was drowning in it because I grew up in the south at a christian school and being gay is an abomination. and I was expected to grow up and while my parents never pushed the “grow up and marry a nice man” on me, they implied that id get married one day and have a family in the traditional sense. um, also, you aren’t obligated to come out to people and also you don’t have to come out to anyone or label yourself at all. and its okay if you don’t figure it all out right now. I thought you had to figure everything out and label yourself. hell fucking no you don’t n its great because I identify as bi right now, but I watched @sydsliftingface’s coming out video a few days ago and she said something that really has stuck with me the past few days and it was really important so I’ll touch on that. “theres a difference between that you could continue to kiss boys versus wanting to kiss boys” and I think thats really important because I’m kinda having another awakening to the fact that maybe I’m more gay that I originally thought huh? idk… come back to me on that… but that quote was really important to me and I’d like to thank her for that.  

14. what is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self

everything will make sense. and you will go at your own pace. and you won’t realize the impact that one thing had on you until months later and hey remember your best friend that you thought of sometimes and didn’t know why? that was an actual crush, sweetie. and its okay to like girls too. also just like hey, everything will make sense. it will click. it takes time and whatnot. but you’ll be okay and you’re accepted. my friends that I’ve come out to have all been supportive and like I’m so happy now. things are really great in this aspect of my life. school? not so much… but we’re surviving. 

20. favourite gay ship (canon or not)

ugh fuck me theres too many. sanvers tho. like I think were going to go a little deep here for a sec. I’m going to say calzone and sanvers because listen up y’all. when I started watching grey anatomy in summer of 2013. calzona was the first wlw ship I had ever seen on my screen and it really opened my eyes to hey, lesbians/bisexuals exist and its ok to like them. and then with sanvers, I didn’t really realize it but I ended up watching supergirl s2 in like a day, and since that day (few days after it had been released on Netflix) I had just in the back of my mind been thinking more and more about my own sexuality and the way Alex had come out etc. and I came out later that July (I watched the show in may btw) ad like come November when 3.05 aired, It hit me how much that Alex/sanvers story really impacted my life and I didn’t expect that and was actually really upset by the breakup even tho I had prepared for it, knew it was happening etc. but like emotions can really fuck you up, y’all.

no. I’ve had feelings for someone, but never in love.

I’m out to my friends, but my parents/family do not know. I don’t plan on telling them. I came out/accepted my sexuality right before I left for college and haven’t really gotten to assess how they really will feel about me being bisexual. so like. I’m closeted for now. 

as for friends. I texted @only-freakin-sunflowers and @unicornshepherdess. they were the first to know, and I posted a thing on tumblr, and came out to them because I knew they wouldn’t judge me at all. they were the first to know because I knew I didn’t have to be afraid to tell them. then, I planned on telling my best friend chelsey next, at home over Christmas break. that didn’t end up happening. the night of my sisters wedding I was a bit intoxicated with my best friend autumn who I’ve known since I was 2 and I didn’t plan on telling her next (she was last on my list) and we got to talking about sexuality or something (idr I was drunk) and I came out to her and she hugged me and I then knew it was all gonna be okay and then I spilled beer on myself fun times. then It was around finals week (nov 27th to be exact I know this bc I came out 7/27, 10/27, 11/27 and then sometime like 12/29.) I was face timing chelsey about Elle mills coming out video she had just posted and I was like “hey, chels, Yano how Elle came out to the world? well I’m coming out to u, I’m bi” and she just was like “awe Cecil I love you” and it was good. I told her I planned on telling her in person but I figured that moment was a good chance. and then when I got home she was actually with me and I told Claudia. @unicornshepherdess gave me a book for Christmas called “this book is gay” and I made Claudia read the back that says “this is for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans, undefined and even the straights. its for everyone!” and I told her to read that (I was pointing to it) word. and I was like hey thats me, I’m bi! and she laughed and hugged me. it was a nice moment. but anyway that was it. 

30. what is a piece of advice for people who may not be in a safe place to express their sexuality

first off, I feel like you’ll never end up feeling 100% safe at all. but just know that you aren’t alone in that feeling. I am literally scared out of my mind at the prospect of telling my parents or them finding out. and tbh, I doubt they would do anything, they’d probably just hug me and laugh and tell raunchy non-offensive jokes and grab me a beer, but that nagging “but what if they hate you, you know they’re going to look at you differently now” is in the back forefront of my mind all the time and I’m scared. its terrifying. also that you need to accept yourself first completely, before you think about trying to come out in an unsafe space. 

my advice is that its okay to be scared, because you are not alone.

you know what’s ACTUAL homophobia like?

- me sitting at the dinner table not six months ago, while my aunt spoke about how “bisexual women have just lost their trust in men” (particularly bad for me as i do have male trust issues because of my childhood), that her friend used to say “you should never try it (women) because what IF if you like them?”, that nowadays television with their propaganda is trying to “create more gay people” and “influence people to become gay”, 

- actual homophobia is me not knowing bisexual people or any other people that weren’t hetero or gay (aka right or wrong) existed before i turned 19, and never realizing, or accepting i might be one of them until i was smacked in the face with my ex and dated her for 3 years.

- when i was a pre-teen, my aunt took my cousins out of the basketball team of the city, because there was a rumor the coach (male) was gay, and if he was, that meant he was definitely a child/teen molester, and she didn’t want him to influence, or, gasp!, touch, her sons.

- actual homophobia is sitting at the family living room while my uncle (60+ and a graduated psychologist who has actual patients) talk about how gay people are just sick, mentally and emotionally imbalanced, because the world is supposed to exist in male/female duality and gay people need to be treated to restore their inner balance. (he also agrees that tv propaganda makes people gay)

- homophobia is having to listen to my uncle and aunt talk about how tv propaganda is trying to push disgusting concepts down our throats to  change what a family means.

- homophobia is every one of my relatives nodding along and quiet.

- actual homophobia feels like my dad refusing to “believe” my sister was bisexual, and calling her now fiancée, “that girl-friend of yours” for years before actually starting to use her name.

- actual homophobia is me and my sister, both reaching our thirties, not being able to be out with our own family, because they’d disown us.

- actual homophobia were the jokes that every PE female teacher was gay, and therefore touched children, i heard these rumors about mine all the time, when i was a teen, people laughed.

- actual homophobia is having to listen to my grandmother be angry that the tv “not only has a gay couple, but keeps SHOWING it to us, why do they have to keep SHOWING them kiss like that? at least don’t shove it on our faces” while giggling at the straight couple having sex onscreen.

- homophobia is having never gone to school with a single out of the closet gay kid, and having every boy that had a type of behavior be mercilessly taunted for it for years, when people had no idea if they were actually gay.

- homophobia is not knowing one out gay couple in my town that is not of older hairdresser men (because that’s acceptable) or older divorced women (because that has to be kept more of a secret, but it’s also passable) (to reiterate, i know exactly 01 of each, so one male same-sex couple, and one female same-sex hushed couple). btw, the women in the female copule are considered just late blooming lesbians, bisexual is still not a word.

- my dad asking me with a disgusted face if any of my sister’s college friends were “you know, more, they’re NOT, right?!?!!” before my sister started a serious relationship.

- me knowing if i ever come out of the closet, i will be treated as a copycat and my parents (definitely my dad) will have a heart-attack, because isn’t ONE enough?!

- me thinking there was something desperately wrong with me because i didn’t have my first official boycrush until i was 16 (never even stopping to consider i could had had my first crush on a girl --- that not to touch ace/aro here).

- me telling myself, after that, over and over again, that just because i found girls pretty it didn’t mean anything, i’d had a BOYFRIEND, i was in LOVE with him, there was NO way in which i could be BOTH gay and straight, i was saved!! (and relieved!)

- my sister wanting to get married and stalling and postponing it, because that’d mean having to actually tell our extended family that she doesn’t just live with her gal-pal. 

- people in this community saying bisexual girls (and ONLY bisexual-girls) have no say in the matter.

- me after all of this still not having enough “credentials” or being “gay enough” to be a part of the community.

- god, i could go on.

i’ve read several people say that what happened was “the biggest disappointment in their life” the “worst thing that ever happened to them”, “awful”, “unforgivable”, “that they can’t recover from this”, “that it’s gonna take endless time to START to come back from this”, that they “can never trust a male actor again” that their “year is ruined”. if that is the truth, if that IS the worse thing that ever happened to you maybe kids, just maybe, you should count yourselves LUCKY. seriously, i am happy for you if that is the case, i’m thrilled that we’ve come this far. i have to sit at this dinner table every week. (not to mention here sexism, racism and others), while the worst thing that ever happened to you was an honest slip up from a man with a completely different cultural background than yours. maybe, just MAYBE get some perspective, ok? i think it’s MUCH needed.
