What's your thoughts on American Indian dogs? (This is a picture of 2 of them that came into the pet supply store I used to work at).

im gonna be honest, i know they exist but not much beyond that - they're not a breed i find particularly interesting, so i haven't looked into them. are these the same things as native american indian dogs, or are those different? there's sooo many of these generic-husky-shepherdy-wolfy projects that i can never remember what is what. but at least with NAIDs i'm pretty sure i remember some bullshit going around recently with a breeder(s?) claiming their dogs had no wolf content when they actually had a significant amount, which is, uh, wildly unethical.

i'm also innately distrustful of any sort of 'historic breed recreation' like this because they tend to be a very... almost fetishistic sort of project. especially considering this is supposed to be a recreation of the dogs that lived with native americans and first nations. are native people actually involved in this project and helping with guidance and direction? or is this just yet another case of Dog People deciding that a historic, landrace breed should Actually Look Like This and ignoring their place of origin? are we actually studying the historic dogs and using the modern american village dogs and rez dogs that still exist today as our founders? or are we just mashing wolfy-looking breeds together because wolves = majestic = totally native american?

idk man i'd love to be proven wrong here, so if someone can refute this and show me that this is a project sanctioned by actual native peoples and with a concise goal in mind, cool. but my surface impression has been more or less that it's Dog People playing dress-up with wolfy-looking dogs under the guise of claiming it's a breed recreation.

15th of September 2024: Shepherd’s Beaked Whale

Apologies for the blurry picture, but unfortunately this seems to be the best photo we have of Shepherd’s Beaked Whale (Tasmacetus shepherdi) when not stranded. Non-specialists have reported them to be up to 7 metres long, but we do have confirmed lengths of up to 6.6 m [1].

They live in the Southern Hemisphere at latitudes of around 30°S to 50°S, meaning that the few times they have stranded have been in South America, e.g. in Argentina, and in Southern Australia [2]. Outside of this, it can be hard to do more research on them, as they are deep sea whales [3], and the latitudes they’re at are notorious for harbouring particularly stormy sea weather [1]. Thus there’s no surprise that for 15 years (between 2002 and 2017) there were no sightings of them underwater, though the latter did give us a video [4].

We do still know a bit about them based upon the stranded individuals. For one, they are unique among beaked whales for having a full set of teeth in both their upper and lower jaw (most only have one or two pairs in the lower jaw). One stomach content analysis also found that in addition to the cephalopods which are a common component of the diet of beaked whales, they also eat fish [5]. Their teeth have also been used to estimate the age of one individual stranded in Punta Quilla in Argentina to be 23 years [6].

yay new butterfly time!!!! this time with a butterfly whose identity i'm not entirely sure of. this butterfly is a bit on the small side, and kinda looks like it could be either Euploea corinna or Phaedyma shepherdi. the p. shepherdi i believe looks a little more like the one i took a photo of, and it's also smaller than the e. corinna. the e. corinna apparently has a 7cm wingspan whereas the p. shepherdi has a 6cm, and the butterfly i took a photo of seemed a bit too small to be having a 7cm wingspan. i felt 6cm was closer to the size of this butterfly. i also think the markings on the p. shepherdi match up just a little bit more to my butterfly, but the image is rather blurry and it's hard to tell so it could really be either/or. it was the only photo i managed to get, and it was on my own phone rather than my mum's (my mum's phone camera is way better than mine) soo yea not the greatest quality. but it was a cute little butterfly nonetheless.

Okay I’m biting the bullet and registering Sophie as an AKC Canine Partner but I can’t settle on a registered name.

I’m leaning towards Browning’s Shelter Special but I also like something comical like “Here for the treats” of “Trying her best”. I also came up with “Sophie’s Somewhat Shepherdy”. Help.

I know two dogs named Kahlua, one is a malinois and the other a malinois x dutch shepherd. Both are coffee coloured like the coffee liquor they where named after (in this case they where named after the booze, I'm sure not all dogs with that names are named for that reason). So for me it's a very shepherdy name. Both dogs are ladies btw.

I knew this dude who has a dog thats a boxer mix and brown and named whiskey. Owner said everyone thinks its because she's brown but she's named that because she walks like she's drunk akdiwnd

#2488 - Tasmacetus shepherdi - Shepherd's Beaked Whale

One last beaked whale from the Whanganui Regional Museum, but this one is extra-special - it's the holotype of a species discovered by the curator in 1937.

AKA Tasman's beaked whale or simply the Tasman whale. The only member of its genus, only seen alive four confirmed times, and very rarely stranded.

George Shepherd found the whale near Hāwera, determined it was something unusual, and had the by-then month-dead remains shipped to the museum, wrapped in disinfectant and cloth, and left them on the museum roof to finish breaking down. He wisely didn't inform the locals where the ungodly stench was coming from.

About halfway down the spine the vertebrae are deformed by a large lumpy growth, that was compressing the spinal cord and may have been the cause of death. Probably extremely painful, too.

Adults can reach lengths of 6 metres (20 ft) to 7.1 metres (23 ft) and weigh about 2.32 to 3.48 tons. At birth they may be about 3 metres (9.8 ft) long. Unusually toothy for a Ziphiid, possessing a full set of 17 to 27 pairs of teeth. This is probably because the species eats more fish than the usually squid-focused other beaked whales.

Wariness and fear were expected from any creature’s desire for self preservation. Humans however, always had a nasty tendency to take it a step further. Their invasion steadily crept further into her domain, forcing her to constantly move and in doing so even invade their settlements in turn. Her form harbored many a scar from a variety of hunter’s weapons, but those who strove to hunt and capture the wolf themselves would find it a wasted effort. She was elusive--some claim the beast was born from the shadows themselves.

But this one wasn’t so adamant on spilling her blood on sight. It was only fair to return the favor in kind--mimicking what she thought to be a human gesture of good faith. The wolf approaches closer, dropping the rabbit carefully into his hands. The small creature itself had long been settled, perhaps finally resigning to its fate now left at the mercy of the shepherd.

YES. PLEASE. I could really see this and Zerena needs more platonic ships in her life. She really cares about Sorey and is already starting to grow protective over him! I think they would both be a very good influence on each other and Zerena would always be there for Sorey, whether to listen to his problems or just be there for emotional support!
