Round 3, Poll 13
Wedge-tailed Eagle vs Short-tailed Pygmy-tyrant
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources under cut
Wedge-tailed Eagle
“they’re friggin’ huge, they can have a wingspan of over 9 feet, I’m always just completely in awe when I see them. also, great legs.”
As a true generalist, anything is on the menu for this eagle. They seem to prefer mammals, especially the invasive European rabbit, but will also hunt native marsupials, including larger macropods (kangaroo). Because of this wide diet they’ve got a range that encompasses all of Australia and Tasmania.
Wedge-tailed Eagle have been noted to attack hang gliders and paragliders, though they are mostly targeting the sail itself and not the human. They’ve also been known to attack unmanned aerial vehicles used for survey operations. This is likely territorial defense, with the eagles mistaking these objects as another eagle.
Short-tailed Pygmy-tyrant
“small. hilarious name-bird combo”
“the smallest bird in the world after several species of hummingbirds. Naming this beast a "tyrant” is the funniest thing ever. Also I’m tail-shaming it" (for reference: tyrant refers to the family this bird belongs to- tyrant flycatchers, which are named after kingbirds)
“Although its plumage is similar to some other tyrant flycatchers, in the field the bird is more often mistaken for a large beetle or insect, especially while in flight… Its flight movements have a mechanical-feel that enhances the insect comparison.” - Wiki

McCarthy's sham impeachment inquiry.
September 13, 2023
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
Speaker Kevin McCarthy has surrendered to pressure from the extremist elements in his extremist party by opening an impeachment inquiry. The inquiry will turn out worse for Kevin McCarthy than for Joe Biden—much! But in the meantime, Republicans will divert the attention of Congress from the urgent work of passing a budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The losers will be the American people, who should punish the GOP for converting a constitutional safeguard into a partisan party trick designed to pacify the tantrums of the so-called “Freedom” Caucus.
The inquiry is part of Trump's effort to destroy every institution that has attempted to hold him accountable for his crimes. “Impeach me? I’ll impeach you! Indict me? I’ll indict you!” The inquiry is a charade that will further erode the legitimacy of the Republican Party and—sadly—Congress.
There is no basis for the impeachment inquiry, a fact made plain by McCarthy’s announcement on Twitter. McCarthy could not bring himself to say that there was a factual basis for the inquiry, only that there were “allegations” of misconduct. McCarthy posted:
I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Over the past several months, House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct—a culture of corruption.
McCarthy did not specify the “serious and credible” allegations because they are whisps of swamp gas swirling over the MAGA cesspool of disinformation. Senate Republicans were openly scornful of the inquiry by their House colleagues. See The Hill,  Senate GOP unhappy with McCarthy on impeachment inquiry: ‘It’s a fool’s errand’. Per The Hill,
“It’s a waste of time. It’s a fool’s errand,” one Senate Republican said on the condition of anonymity to speak freely and critically about the politically charged decision. Asked if there’s enough evidence to impeach Biden, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate GOP leadership team, replied: “I do not.”
Democrats were a bit more expressive about the inquiry. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that it is an “illegitimate impeachment inquiry that is a kangaroo court, fishing expedition, and conspiracy theater, rolled into one.” Indeed, Democrats believe the inquiry will damage GOP prospects for retaining control of the House in 2024. Per Politico,
Abby Curran, the executive director of House Democrats’ super PAC, said the inquiry would "doom" vulnerable Republicans, especially the 18 members in districts won by President Joe Biden.
As Trump has done repeatedly over the last seven years, he is leading the Republican Party into a lose-lose position in the pursuit of revenge. Indeed, Trump is privately pulling the strings of the GOP’s impeachment show. See Politico, Trump privately discussed Biden impeachment with House GOPers. Trump's ego may be satisfied by a Biden impeachment, but the effort will ensure that Republicans lose control of the House. When will Republicans learn that Trump is the slow poison that is killing their party?
It is, of course, frustrating to the point of madness to watch Republicans engage in political terrorism. But there is a cost to their self-destructive behavior. The ruling in Dobbs is an example. Within months of the ruling, the warning signs were flashing bright red, signaling that Republicans had incurred the wrath of most Americans by overruling Dobbs.
But Republicans could not restrain themselves after Dobbs. Rather than regulate abortion, they criminalized it. They threatened to jail doctors and Uber drivers who assisted women seeking medical care. They offered bounties for reporting medical workers who provide healthcare to women who miscarry. And now they are threatening to make it illegal for women to travel out of their home state to receive reproductive healthcare. See Vox, The unconstitutional plan to trap women who need an abortion in Texas.
Although abortion is effectively illegal in two dozen states, the tide has turned. Republicans are on the defensive and are scrambling to find a way to avoid the proliferation of absolute bans that ensure their ultimate demise. Indeed, they now see a national 15-week ban as a face-saving “middle ground” that will stop their election losses. All of this is explained convincingly by Josh Marshall in Talking Points Memo, The End of the Pro-Life Movement. Per Marshall,
While abortion rights remain more restricted and endangered than at any time in the last half century, the “pro-life” movement itself is essentially over. It’s future is as a rearguard action, using inertia, incumbency and legislative chicanery to hold on to existing gains.
So, too, with the endless pursuit of Biden-crime-family fantasies and the use of Congress and the Constitution as cudgels to bash those who offend Trump. The impeachment inquiry of Biden will fail and backfire—and Republicans know it. But they can’t help themselves. Such compulsive behavior is a disease that is consuming the Republican Party—and the vector is Donald Trump.
A quick note on the procedural aspects of the impeachment inquiry.
Kevin McCarthy could have begun an impeachment inquiry by holding a vote in the House. He did not. Instead, he merely “declared” the opening of an inquiry without a vote—because he knew that he did not have enough votes for that motion to pass. See The Hill, Why McCarthy launched an impeachment inquiry without a vote — and why he can.
Because McCarthy was forced to proceed without a vote authorizing the inquiry, any subpoenas issued by the House have no compulsory effect. See Politico, How Donald Trump’s DOJ gave Biden a major assist in the coming impeachment probe.
          Per Politico,
In January 2020, the Donald Trump-led Justice Department formally declared that impeachment inquiries by the House are invalid unless the chamber takes formal votes to authorize them. That opinion — issued by the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel — came in response to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to launch an impeachment inquiry into Trump without initially holding a vote for it. Not only is it still on the books, it is binding on the current administration as it responds to Tuesday’s announcement by Speaker Kevin McCarthy to authorize an impeachment inquiry into Biden, again without a vote.
So, for those worried about the impeachment inquiry resulting in enforceable subpoenas for documents and testimony, the opinion by the Office of Legal Counsel in the Trump-era DOJ definitively establishes DOJ policy that such subpoenas are not enforceable. The lack of enforcement authority demonstrates that the inquiry is a sham designed to placate the most extreme elements in the Freedom Caucus.

Adam with a reader who considers him an older brother
Tumblr media
-I love Adam, where's his fanarts guys ?????-
TW: nothing, just stupid things
You are the youngest member of Europole with an intelligence on par with Mary Shelley.
Even with Mary's grumpy personality, you managed to get close and that's why you met Adam and became very attached to him.
Adam may not easily understand behavior so it will take a while for him to know that you consider him a big brother, but when he does he will TRY to be 'affectionate':
"why are you patting me on the head???" "Because I Like You Little Sister/Brother'' ''WHAT--''
The times you end up sleeping on his exhaust table he carries you around like those baby kangaroo backpacks (you know??);
Adam always tells you about new experiences in the human world and also asks a lot of questions:
''Why do you humans spend so much time watching anime or reading fanfics, than actually doing something productive?'' ''hun…..I don't know…''
Since he can read feelings and emotions, I believe that in difficult times he is a good comforter;
He will over time grow fond, will protect you all his robotic brain;
Expect gum and hugs Randomly (he's probably seen in his database that it can make someone's day better)
In short, he is a sweetheart, sometimes silly, so cherish his friendship. Mary is grateful for all of this as she contributes to her research

Thoughts on/during MSBE
Tumblr media
So this isn’t a review, per say, but rather me just pointing out some interesting tidbits, discoveries and comments I had from watching the movie.
Let’s start with the overall feel of the film. It definitely seems much more akin to Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, than the English dub of the original movie ever was. Whereas in this one it is more apparent that Mewtwo is only lashing out his hate towards his circumstances at the world, rather than setting out to really conquer it. This of course made our angsty kangaroo much more sympathetic, in my eyes. That being said though, I think including his original prologue with Ambertwo, would have added MUCH more depth to his character. CAUSE THIS GENERATION NEEDS TO SUFFER LIKE I DID WHEN I SAW IT. //SHOT
Speaking of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein it was this take on the movie that made me realize Ash seems to parallel Robert Walton, a “protagonist” in the book who recklessly goes out to be an explorer, seeking glory or adventure without seriously thinking things over first. Sound familiar?
Dragonite’s Muppet noises give me life. You can’t change my mind.
The fact that officer Jenny threatened to arrest those trainers going to New Island means they’re actions were screaming “F**K COPS”.
The rocket trio was cheesy as usual, and tried making the movie into a musical number. They failed. //SHOT
Brock was actually smart enough to recognize Nurse Joy BEFORE her hat came off, who knew he had some brain cells when infatuated? *SARCASM*
The animation was actually better than I anticipated. Mewtwo’s movements felt more alive and dare I say “natural”, the scenery was pretty breathtaking at some points and while the humans could be pretty jarring sometimes the Pokémon were often very visually pleasing to me at least.
Brock has been drinking his “respect woman” juice, because he called the girl trainer QUEEN. Also he referenced his infamous “jelly doughnuts” sakjhfjkshg.
Also the soundtrack? They really went hardcore on the organ, there. Probably to add to the spoopy Frankenstein vibe.
Speaking of Frankenstein’s monster again, I noticed that BOTH of my psychic kangaroos canon stories somewhat reflect different points of the monster’s life. Not just because they’re artificial, whereas OG Mewtwo’s story focuses more on its creation/lashing out against world Newtwo’s story [mainly the prologue and before she found Pokémon who took care of her] is reflective of the time at the very end of Shelly’s book where the monster got watched his creator die and went off into the isolated arctic never to be seen again. Presumably to rid the world of his “abominable” existence.
Meowth commented that the clones sleeping in their tubes was ‘cute’ and... well he’s not wrong.
The way Mewtwo responded to Nurse Joy after getting her out of his influence, seemed to suggest that he tried using her to figure out his own body as well and no I don’t mean that in a weird way, get your mind out of the gutter you THOTS.
“No matter who the Pokémon, there isn’t a Pokémon that can’t be caught!” Bro, if you only BEEN to the dynamaxed Mewtwo raid battles.
Also the clone’s popping out of the machines don’t look like a Rhyhorn giving birth now, so that’s nice.
Also the whole palace -whistles- that is some top-tier gothic architecture man.
Charizard is a hot-head like usual, but his cgi form gives me Toothless, making me want to squish his face.
“Humans, I have no desire to cause you harm. Simply go home.” Wow that is surprisingly non-jerky of you Mewt- *Opens gate up to reveal HIS typhoon* “That is, if you can make it through the storm. >:3″ Aaaaand never mind, you’re an a-hole.
If you listen closely you can hear og Mewtwo’s anger slowly increasing, each time his shots fail to hit Mew.
“A Pokémon’s REAL strength comes from the heart you say! Well mine’s full of rage and emotional trauma!”
You can climb down that wall Ash! Just believe that you’re Spider-Man! Or whatever version of him you have, in your universe.
Aaaand you failed.
Pikachu and Pikatwo fight, aka Jordon Peele’s Us.
“Living things won’t give up their territory, to other members of their own species. That means-” “They’ll battle until the other is defeated, until only one remains.” OW, okay just thinking of that possibility ever occurring between him and Psyche, the implications PAINS ME TO NO END.
CHARIZARDTWO GAVE ASH’S CHARIZARD A LIZARD KISS, THIS IS NOT A DRILL! THE VULPIX ALSO GAVE EACH OTHER APOLOGY LICKS!
Okay seriously some parts of the movie’s soundtrack are GOOD, y’all. Also the art in the credits are gorgeous.
OG Mewtwo -glancing back at his clones- “...Oh crap, I’m a father now, aren’t I?”
Finally, GF if y’all are hinting that you might be making a cgi special in returns, may I humbly ask that you hint at Newtwo’s existence more. Plz and thank.

Hairy Hermit Hummingbird vs Wedge-tailed Eagle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources under cut
Hairy Hermit Hummingbird
“All the other hummingbirds are called really sparkly sound names like ‘wood nymph’ or ‘emerald’ or ‘topaz’ or ‘comet tailed’ or so and then there’s the hairy hermit. It’s not like other girls /joking but also”
Also known as: Rufous-breasted Hermit; a widespread species of hummingbird, they are common in much of their range, from Southern Brazil to the Northern edge of Panama.
Hermit hummingbirds are typically associated with heliconia flowers, using their long, decurved bill to easily access the nectar. This species in particular also uses heliconias as a nesting platform.
They’ve also been known to attack unmanned aerial vehicles used for survey operations. This is likely territorial defense, with the eagles mistaking these objects as another eagle.

Democracy Promotion Abroad, Complete and Utter Breakdown at Home
As the United States cascades toward the status of a failed state, an author at The National Interest points out that, “democracy for Iran is one cause that effortlessly unites the left and right in unprecedented ways.” House Resolution 374, which calls on Iran to adopt a “secular democracy,” secured 221 House co-sponsors of both parties and was enthusiastically embraced by the Trump State Department.
Disorder and violence is rampantly spreading in the U.S. The history and traditions bequeathed by our ancestors are being defaced, freedom of speech and religion are increasingly under siege, and rank partisanship and vitriol mark our politics. In response, our nation’s leaders have come together to exclaim to the world: “you need to be more like us.”
You might have thought that when the nation has descended into chaos and whole sections of major cities have become ungovernable, it would be time for a little humility. Not for our puffed up political class. They continue to hector other nations with claims of American superiority at a time when American democracy is displaying clear signs of mediocrity and decay.
As democracy promotion continues to be the animating principle of American foreign policy for both parties, consider the condition of American democracy.
First, the Democratic Party, once a great bastion of John Stuart Mill-style liberals, was at one time populated with politicians who earnestly felt that social problems could be solved by people with brains, sympathy and good will. These liberals—Patrick Moynihan is an example—were rational, inquisitive, insightful and sincere. They were generally formidable interlocutors when discussing the nation’s problems, which they genuinely wished to solve. These traditional liberals were not “conservative” in the sense that they were more respectful of “reason” than of tradition, and they were certainly elitist, but they were civilized, orderly and thoughtful.
Now consider the temperament of those setting the tone in the contemporary Democratic Party. John Stuart Mill-style liberalism is dead, its rationality replaced by a totalitarian ferocity that brooks no dissent and labels opponents as malevolent cretins. A Frankenstein’s monster, who was created on our university campuses and who there instituted a decades-long reign of terror, has now extended his dominion over institutions off-campus, such as the Democratic Party and the media. Like Mary Shelley’s monster in her novel, the Western intellectuals who created the illiberal campus culture insisted that the creature was beautiful when, in fact, he was hideous and violent. And, as in the novel, when the monster—who felt that he was full of virtue and innocence, simply a victim of a cruel world–escaped into the population no one was safe.
It took several decades for the irrationality, ideology and intolerance of campus culture to overtake the Democratic Party, but that takeover is now complete. Politicians on the left no longer wish to debate the nation’s problems and, as is the case for activists on campus, their goal is to shout down, stigmatize, smear, and crush their opponents. In this tribalistic culture, there are no longer any civil rights for the accused in non-favored groups. Accused police officers in urban areas controlled by Democrats will now face the same kangaroo justice that boys on campus faced when they were accused of sexual misconduct. Campus culture is now Democratic Party culture, and its victims will be innocent citizens trapped in urban areas that will go unpoliced and ungovernable for the foreseeable future.
If you think the GOP is the antidote to this chaos, think again. The Republican Party is sometimes labeled as the nation’s “conservative” party. What exactly has the GOP sought to conserve? As the intolerant left marched through all of the nation’s cultural institutions, Republicans did nothing. They had some electoral success, but they accomplished little because they did not understand that public policy is downstream from culture; the options of the policymakers are quite limited when the culture sets the boundaries of acceptable debate.
Conservative “intellectuals,” should have been seriously alarmed by the Maoist-style cultural revolution, instead they abandoned the universities and founded “think tanks” designed to push tax cuts at home and endless wars abroad. How, one might ask The Heritage Foundation, are things going on the American heritage front?
The conservative “movement” ignored the culture and became obsessed with electoral politics and economic growth, meaning that the ultimate goals for “conservatives” became power and money. The philistinism of the Republican Party was captured brilliantly in Sen. Marco Rubio’s declaration during the 2016 campaign that college students should avoid learning Greek philosophy. Rubio’s consistent position has been that compared with money and war, Aristotle is not worth your time. Rush Limbaugh has voiced the same disdain for our foundational classical culture. Is it any wonder that Republican politicians are at a loss and hiding under their beds as disorder sweeps the nation? They simply do not know what to say or do because they have ignored, and sometimes even ridiculed, the traditions that gave us Western order and American constitutionalism.
Populism and nationalism, two trendy buzzwords of conservative intellectuals, simply represent the pouring of old wine into new bottles and reflect the continuing misguided emphasis upon electoral politics. These buzzwords are likely to pass away if Trump is defeated in the election. With Jared Kushner firmly at the helm in the Trump White House, Trump will likely fail to make good on two of his signature campaign promises: immigration reform and exiting the Middle East, thus cinching defeat in key Midwest battleground states. Rather than adopting a 2020 campaign slogan of “Keep America Great,” Trump might consider, “après moi le déluge.”
Thirty years ago, as the Cold War was coming to an end, Jeane Kirkpatrick warned us that, “a good society is defined not by its foreign policy but its internal qualities.” She advised Americans to come home from their global commitments and to work to “make a good society better.” Our leaders of both parties ignored her advice, and we are seeing the results.
William S. Smith is Senior Research Fellow and Managing Director of the Center for the Study of Statesmanship at The Catholic University of America. His recent book Democracy and Imperialism is from the University of Michigan Press.
