Sheats-Goldstein Residence | John Lautner
Beverly Crest, Los Angeles, CA | United States | 1963
The Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Beverly Crest was, initially, a commission for Paul and Helen Sheats (a professor and artist, respectively) and their three children. The focal point of the house is the extraordinary living room covered by a triangular, concrete structure with a coffered roof, which shelters both the internal space and an adjoining terrace and aims for a seamingless transition between indoors and outdoors. The house was hardly complete when the Sheats family sold up. Later, a new owner, James Goldstein, turned to architect John Lautner to work on and extend the house over a period of more than two decades. They both took the house to a new level in terms of ambition - with upgraded services, finishes, detailing and landscaping - but the central ideas remained intact.

I know p much nothing about architecture but I love a good rant let's hear some Spicy Opinions™️
Spicy Architecture Opinions:
99% of the really cool buildings people love are like. The worst. There's a lot of buildings I think are very cool, but would be much cooler as sculptures and should not be. Buildings people live in. The more people who go "wow that's so cool" the more likely it is that architects hate it. Frank Lloyd Wright, I love his buildings aesthetically, they have the structural integrity of banana pudding. Frank Gehry's buildings leak like a sieve.
There's basically like. A direct correlation between "how much layppl like a thing" and "how much architects don't" LMAO
I think lots of architects, as seems to be a pattern in technical professions like engineering, focus too much on concept and aesthetic and weirdly try to fit everything around that. Also they don't take into account like. Electricians, plumbers, etc bc they're Below Them or whatever.
Also fuck concrete all my besties hate poured concrete. There's a building (the Sheats Goldstein House) that's in a lot of movies n stuff (like The Big Lebowski) and every time I see it I go wow! It's that house! Hate it!
Like why is that part of the bench on the OTHER SIDE of the glass. Also the benches are all concrete so you can't move them or anything. They're essentially part of the house.
IDK what else I have more Thoughts but can't organize them LMAO enjoy these thoughts
Anyway my fave architect is Antoni Gaudi he's like if Frank Lloyd Wright was a good architect and Spanish.
Pictured: Casa Batllo (top) and the Sagrada Familia (bottom)
Sagrada Familia is my absolute favorite building 💕 I got to see it in person once! It was really breathtaking. The facades have incredible detail and they have a whole museum inside about Gaudi and his architectural process. He designed some of his buildings by hanging strings and attaching weights, essentially making sure his structures were strong enough to hold weight by designing the shape upside down! He was an AMAZING mathematician.

i dont even like it (sheats-goldstein house you'll recognize it from the big lebowski) that much anyway it has an absolutely beautiful shape and landscaping and aside from that its the least practical home ever Which makes sense because it's for entertaining and photoshoots it's not really a place for like . normal people to live in but i watched a tour of it and then immediately read an article about the bruce goff ford house by the professor of modern architecture who lives there and he said this
and it just hit me how fucking insane it is that that's not the bare minimum because i just read an article today about wright's clinton house that just got sold in carmel (red on shinigami eyes because it's the guardian) and there was an anecdote about how he was fighting the client over putting a door in the kitchen so she could take the trash out and he said it would "destroy the integrity of the grid" what the fuck are you talking about it's a house. people hate bruce goff sooooo much but he's like one of the only really eccentric (post)modern architects who proved you didn't have to sacrifice practicality (except for bavinger lol) Um anyway talk to me about modernist architecture if you want i have more opinions than is reasonable
the thing about architecture is i talk about how much i hate it so often because i love it so so so so so much. do you ever see a house that looks like midcentury modernist weekend at bernies because a guy who made his money from "litigation terrorism" bought it in 1972 and refused to stop building it out like if the winchester house was for the hollywood elite

Tom Blachford expands Midnight Modern architecture photo series
Modernist buildings bathed in moonlight are the subject of Australian photographer Tom Blachford's updated image series, which goes on show in New York this week. The fourth and final set of Midnight Modern photos includes 12 large-scale images, all taken under the light of a full moon using long exposure times. Icons like the Sheats-Goldstein residence and the Doolittle House are among the projects depicted in the collection.
