I was watching my mom's dogs last night and little Maggie whined at me until I let her under the covers and after about ten minutes she was like this in my lap

Out of curiousity, if everyone in the party were dogs, what breeds do you think theyd be.
I think Marcille would be an Afghan Hound.
Oh-ho, that's a very great question!
The Touden siblings Laios and Falin would be Kishu Kens, that's a Japanese medium-sized (up to 55 cm) and typically white-furred breed used for hunting. That's how I see the dogboy Laios when I draw him!
Marcille Afgan Hounds are very majestic, definitely on the elf side, but to me it's a little too majestic to be Marcille (she's silly), get me? I think Marcille is not a full blood elf, which technically allows me to make her a mixed breed! She would be some sort of a Rough Collie OR Shetland Sheepdog mix, with the general vibe of these breeds, a size somewhere between the two (Rough Collies are way too big and Shelties are too small next to Kishus) and a lighter shade of fur (coming from the other part of the mix). Sadly souldn't find a photo of what I was looking for, so attaching a normal collie photo.
Chilchuck Toy Fox Terrier, the white and tan coat variant. Small (up to 29 cm), silly, big ears. Or an alternative version: Chiweenie (Chihuahua and Dachshund mix), they just have this Chilchuck energy.
Senshi I'm not actually sure… Some curly breed, maybe something like Puli! They're not too big (about 43 cm) and it would look good on him
Izutsumi Cat! Okay, well... Whippet! They're cute, cat-like (if the internet articles are true) and athletic. Also, they aren't too tall or short in comparison to the other breeds i picked (about 45 cm) AND they can come in black and white!
TY FOR ASKING I HAD SM FUN WITH THESE!!! Tried to give them a teeny bit more of the fluffy manga kobold vibe, except with their normal eyes instead of dog eyes
I wonder how other people see them!
#everyone is dogs#i put a lot of attention into maintaining the height balance#laios is not very good here but its okay hes gonna get a ton of other art anyway#doodle#dungeon meshi#dogboy laios#laios#laios touden#laios dungeon meshi#marcille#marcille donato#marcille dungeon meshi#chilchuck#chilchuck tims#chilchuck dungeon meshi#senshi#senshi dungeon meshi#izutsumi#izutsumi dungeon meshi#ask

Anyway things I think all breeders should do or I personally wouldn’t consider them for my own dogs:
keep a detailed pedigree of at least 5 generations regardless of purebred or mixed breed status for each of their owned and produced dogs
health test at least the bare minimum for their individual breed (if purebred) or of all involved breeds (if mixed)- better practice is to fully health test above and beyond bare minimum by also including other known, testable concerns that maybe are not specifically required but are a good idea to do
support their buyers! I have paid 700 for Tater’s neuro freakout and that was all done within the first 24 hours and the only reason I even paid that is because I got the bill for treatment before her breeders could give me their credit card number, which is now attached to her file and they pay all neuro-related expenses. I pay for medication because it’s $12 for 6 months but they offered to do that for me too. Tater also was free rather than cost-of-spay fee as a result because I paid more than what her spay would cost at the ER. This is really above and beyond but it’s made my standards raise quite a lot.
be careful who they sell their dogs to. If their dogs are constantly winding up in shelters or in byb or puppy mill hands then they clearly are just selling to the first buyer with money or worse, selling through a pet store, and it only worsens our shelter dogs problem
take their dogs back for any reason whatsoever or at least help the owner find a new home. So many people I know have been abandoned by their breeders when health issues or personal problems come up and the dog has to go. When I was in my car accident, Creed’s breeder super didn’t have space for him and she still offered to take him for however long I needed to recover. The chihuahuas’ breeders and Sushi’s breeder likewise have told me multiple times that even if it’s just to board my girls over the weekend, if I need them to be somewhere that’s not home they are happy to hold onto them for me for as long as I need.
does breed-specific, proveable temperament testing or working aptitude testing if purebred, or actually does the thing they’re saying they’re breeding towards if not. Nothing that annoys me more than people going “I don’t need a show dog I do WORKING DOG STUFF” to justify their breedings and then their idea of “working dog stuff” is like. Dog sometimes does tricks, looks cool on social media, maybe gets a FastCAT title.
This is not Jaz Is A Purebred Snob (hi my name is Jaz and I think terrier mixes are super cute and want about a billion, I keep heavily considering a mal/whippet if dobe plans don’t work out and talking myself out of it for the sake of my chihuahuas, and I think the most successful doberman outcross thus far is a dobe/bandog cross that I’m closely watching grow up) it’s Jaz Was Raised Really Fucking Amish And Has Seen Some Shit re: Puppy Mills. Personally I really don’t fucking care what other people do but if folks are gunna bug me about whether or not I like a breeder (or a breeding program) if it’s missing one of these things the answer is probably no.
#there's some other stuff but that's stuff I'm highly picky on#like I'd consider the breeder good even if they're missing the stuff I didn't explain but maybe not a good fit FOR ME#like for me I'm really focused on certain sports and I don't want to change my lifestyle so I'm looking for a couple really specific things#a breeder not producing dogs for my lifestyle or choice in sports can still be decent I just am not interested in buying from them

The last post was kind of negative so here is a positive one about today’s fast CAT:
- My dad loves lure coursing and always wants me to tell him when the next one is so he can come and slip my dog.
- My dog loves lure coursing and screams incessantly as soon as she hears the motor. We have to keep her far back as her turn approaches because she won’t shut up. She is also quite fast for an older lady.
- I love watching the whippets. They are so impressive! Like holy mackeral.
- My favorite dogs besides the whippets are the short dogs. There was a super intense chihuahua today and everyone loved him. There was also a twelve-year-old chi mix who apparently retired to fast CATs after a career in coursing.
- There’s a beagle that I see frequently that I adore. His owner just tosses him down and off he goooooooes.
- A beauceron puppy ran for the first time today and did great. She was so excited afterwards she kept leaping straight up into the air.
- The dalmatian people dress the best.
- I surreptitiously filmed the malinois so I can admire that takeoff. Wowza.
- A great dane.
- A very blonde afghan had what everyone agreed was a very elegant run.
- There is usually a Boston terrier caravan, but they didn’t make it today, alas. These Bostons do not fuck around. They are a joy to watch.
- The crowd favorite-- besides the chihuahua-- was a staffordshire who apparently is fed rocket fuel.
- An Ibithan hound!
- Whenever a really intense, really little dog ran, the huntmaster and the flag person would high-five.

Piper came home on August 8th, seemingly perfectly healthy, looks can be and are deceiving and I accept that, I saw her picture and wanted her out of the litter. I got the puppy that I wanted and that was that.
Barely into our second week, Piper shows signs of skin problems. Veterinarian finds ringworm near the injection site where some random person vaccinated her. We treat her for that with bathing. Then she develops bumps, so we stop bathing. That spot eventually clears up.
Soon Piper begins losing her fur. After a skin scraping, we find that it was demodectic mange and we begin treatment.
September 26th, I meet with the director of where Piper came from. I present the veterinary documents, explain everything that is going on, the $250+ in veterinary bills piling up, etc. I was asked if I was looking to return Piper, I replied that of course not, I love this puppy and I will continue to pay whatever it takes to get her healthy again. He was nice enough to refund the $200 that was paid for Piper, to help pay for further veterinary bills.
I did not ask for that but am very thankful. What I specifically requested was that they contact the families that Piper’s littermates went to, but the response I got was, “well we haven’t heard anything from them... so...”
Before leaving, another staff member who was also in that meeting, hugged me and thanked me for “giving the puppy such a great home” and “being such a good dog owner”, or something like that, “because most people would just return her and want their money back.”
September 27th, Piper dies.
Today, October 5, I finally compose myself enough to call the place I got Piper from. Reception answers, I requested to speak with the same director/manager I previously met with concerning this matter, but he is out of the building, “so you can speak to another director instead if that is okay?” Reception, or whatever, also asked what this was concerning, so I explained. I am put on hold, told that so-and-so is doing paperwork but will get on as soon as they can. I get transferred to a veterinary technician, do not know if they were a director or manager.
This person could not have possibly been more apathetic, dismissive, or cold, and in such few words, it was amazing. All the while I am sobbing and can barely speak at moments or gather my thoughts. (It was incredibly painful having to explain everything that transpired, twice, having to relive it, it hurt.)
“Well, losing a pet is very hard.”
Oh, I had no idea, this is the first time I have experienced death, so thank you for telling me that. I am glad people like you are there to tell people like me that death is not easy.
“What do you want from me?” “What is it that you want us to do?”
I don’t fucking know. Maybe have a little compassion? Maybe not speak to me in monotone? As if you’re just watching the clock, waiting for this phone call to be over with? Like you’re making hand motions signalling to others your hurried desire for me to wrap this up so you can go back to doing your paperwork? Maybe be a human? You work for an organization that supposedly “saves animals”, or whatever your stupid mission statement is, and you have nothing to say to me other than “Losing a pet is hard.” Maybe rethink your career choice?
Twice, I requested, please contact the owners of my puppy’s littermates. Just make sure their puppies are okay.
“Well, mange isn’t transferable. And we haven’t heard anything from them.”
So the fuck what? I am asking that you contact the owners just to make sure their puppies are healthy, and at the very least, alive. You asked me what I wanted, and I told you. Why is making this one single and simple request like pulling fucking teeth with you people?
What if Piper had parvo? Would you wait to hear from the owners or would you take the responsibility and call them up yourself to make sure those puppies are okay? I know the answer to that, because I know what kind of organization you work for.
(And don’t the other owners have the right to know about their puppies’ previously sick and now dead littermate?)
And because I was refunded the $200, I imagine you’d like to avoid, at all costs, the possibility of having to offer the same thing to even just one of the owners of her littermates should it be ill for any reason. Oh, I know, I really do.
“Okay so you’re just calling to tell us the puppy is dead?”
Oh my fucking god.
Anyway, I guess the person I spoke with is going to “leave a message” with the director/manager I requested to speak to in the first place, but I don’t believe I’ll be receiving a call back or anything.
I have had numerous bad experiences with this place in the past, so it only makes sense that the one puppy I pick out gets sick and dies. I guess I should not have expected any less than that with their history, so that one is on me, lol!
I had been looking at Chihuahuas and Chi mixes for two years, then I come across Piper’s picture, I meet her, I take her home, I am not at all in the least unsatisfied with anything about her. She was very timid at first, but almost instantly bonded with me while at the facility. Piper became a velcro-puppy, she followed me everywhere, climbed at my legs begging to be held or carried. At first she was terrified of the other dogs, nipped at them when they got too nosy, but it didn’t take long for her to love her new brothers, especially Watson. Piper loved playing with Watson, she would pester him for his bully sticks or pig ears, so I’d often have to trade hers for his, going back and forth, playing musical munchies. Piper loved climbing all over Bandit. She loved everyone she met and all the other animals, she kissed the faces of all people and the other animals. Watson loved her, he chased the cats away from her, posed as her body guard while outside to keep the Whippets away, he snuggled with her, licked/groomed her head and face, he was always so gentle with her, never once played too rough. I knew Watson would be fine with another small dog in the house but I never expected him to show so much affection, when he is hardly an affectionate dog. They made a great pair, but Piper always preferred me over Watson, which made me feel so special.
Piper was a lot of fun while she was well, she was silly and hyper like any other puppy, sweet and loving, very smart and already knew sit, down and spin. She was such a good puppy.
I loved everything about Piper. She was perfect.
Piper was the first puppy I picked out of a litter since Sasha, eleven years ago. And both ended in tragedy for me.
I wanted her to be my little road dog, to come along with us to dog shows.
I wanted to do agility with her, I bought a small agility tunnel just for her but never got to use it.
I bought her a Halloween sweater, she never got to wear it.
I have more than half a bag of puppy food left over, and a tiny empty crate.
But I gotta remember, “Losing a pet is hard.” I would have never known that had no one told me over and over again on the phone today. Thanks!
Yeah. Fuck it. I am done now.

What Dogs Would Overwatch Characters Have
So I saw this: https://junkratyes.tumblr.com/post/160192907305/what-dogs-overwatch-characters-would-have
And loved it but I’ve always considered it more like this:
Soldier 76: A beagle: he’s trained it to smell out drugs, cadavers, and truffles.
Widowmaker:.An Afghan hound who is just as regal as her.
Sombra: A Xoloitzcuintli with a purple(pet safe) mohawk and a hacker inspired collar that steal people information when they walk past
Tracer: A whippet, they go running in the park together, Tracer can keep up.
Symmetra: Chihuahua, never on a leash, best trained small dog you’ve ever seen with a hardlight rhinestone collar.
Junkrat:A Dingo, with a missing eye and leg and like op said, sleeps in Junkrat’s tire
Ana: A Doberman, never growls, doesn't need to, a stare is enough.
Pharah: A Catahoula Leopard Dog,Pharah was drawn to the coat and mismatched eyes, she named it Osiris because of the choppy colored coat
Reinhardt: A Great Pyrenees,he blames his white hair on the dog's shedding
Genji: A Shiba Inu that almost never listens to Genji but is extremely protective of him.
Hanzo: An Akita that would probably kill if Hanzo told it to.
Mercy: A working line Golden Retriever, a service dog dropout but still incredibly trained.
Torbjorn: An English Bulldog that makes funny noises.
D.Va: Japanese Chin, she’s got a matching bunny bow and rides shotgun in Hana’s mech
Zarya: A St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd mix, someone mentioned it as a joke Zarya though it would be good luck.
Roadhog: Chinese Crest who never stops shaking
McCree: A heeler collie mix, that came from his neighbors down the road. Named her Lassie She likes socks and spooking the cattle.
Reaper: Black German Shepherd because Edgelord, She is a sweety.
Zenyatta: A Tibetan Terrier who never leaves his lap
Mei: Samoyed, who wears an orange vest when they go hiking in the snow.
Winston: Border Collie, who always looks worried and never takes his eyes of Winston
Orisa: A mutt that she found on the streets and decided to take care of it. Spins alot
Bastion: A little terrier mutt with wiry fur

Never had a Pomeranian myself but I have a Chihuahua mix that thinks he's a pit-bull and can take on the world and a lovable Whippet Hound mix that tries to act tough but she's really just a teddy bear, she even sounds like a bear cub when she growls.
Yeah that’s the thing about small dogs, they act tough (though my dad’s pom has bitten me a few times and it did hurt) I’ve never really had big dogs before (I kinda have a phobia of them tbh...) though...

Tag game dealing with your pets or pets you live with! I thought this would be fun to fill out for those who have pets! Under the cut are my own answers (: How many pets do you have: Name(s):
How did you decide on the name(s): What species: Adopted or other: How long have you had them: What drew you towards them:
Do you feed them “people food”:
Do you have a picture or a tag for them: Do they sleep in your bed or in a cage: Are they afraid of anything: Have you had other pets before: Something they do that makes you laugh: Do they know any tricks: You can tag about 5 or more people if you’d like:
How many pets do you have: I’ve got three
Name(s): Sugar, Honey, and Jemma How did you decide on the name(s): Honey had her name when we got her and it perfectly fits her, Jemma is her sister and their whole litter had food names. I chose Jemma for obvious reasons lol. Then Sugar, my mom and I saw her as a tiny little puppy and she was pure white at the time so we were looking for names that would go with that and we picked Sugar. Now she’s white and tan/brownish so I say it works out cause now she’s white and brown sugar XD What species/breed: They’re all dogs, and Honey and Jemma are chihuahua dachshund mixes apparently?? But Honey is also like a whippet mix. Sugar is just all chihuahua. Adopted or other: Honey and Jemma are adopted and then we brought Sugar from a friend. How long have you had them: We’ve had them all for about two years. What drew you towards them: We saw Honey’s picture online and she just looked so adorable and we were actually looking at another one of her little mates but when we got to the adoption event that one had already gotten a home. But then I saw Jemma and she was so sweet and cute so we ended up getting both of them. And then my mom saw the image of Sugar as a new born puppy and basically was sold. Do you feed them “people food”: Not really for the most part, my mom has started letting them drink the broth part of her homemade chicken noodle soup after she’s done and that’s really it Do you have a picture or a tag for them: I’ve got the tag “my puppers” for them (: Do they sleep in your bed or in a cage: Honey and Jemma sleep in my bed (and almost push me off at times) and Sugar sleeps with my mom Are they afraid of anything: Sugar and Honey are afraid of storms, Honey is afraid of loud noises overall so horror movies especially she gets terrified, and then Jemma is basically afraid of everything but storms lol Have you had other pets before: I have had a bunch of fish, hamsters, a dog named L.B. and a dog named Princess Something they do that makes you laugh: Sugar stands on her hind legs like a prairie dog, if someone has a bone that Jemma wants she’ll start throwing a temper tantrum and whining, she makes hilarious noises when she does, and then Honey is a big grump when it comes to Sugar. Sugar is like the younger sister and everything she does is annoying. So if she’s annoying Honey, Honey will start growling and making weird noises and shows her teeth but that’s literally all she does and it’s so funny. Do they know any tricks: Honey and Jemma know how to sit, lay down, and shake, Sugar unfortunately doesn’t just yet lol. But Honey also sits and waits for you to throw her ball up and she’ll jump up and catch it in mid air. You can tag about 5 or more people if you’d like: I’m going to tag people who I’ve noticed have pets @lostgirl966, @ughfitz, @thelatenightstoryteller, @blake-wyatt, @agentverbivore, @yeo1004
I know I’m missing people who have pets but these are all the ones I can think of at this current moment, I’m sorry And if you don’t want to do this you don’t have to! I hope it was okay to tag you guys

Caring for Your Dog This post includes affiliate links. Read more right here. Not an alternative to professional veterinary assistance. The very first I became aware of a ThunderShirt was when I was dog-sitting my dog good friend Charlie. She’s a border collie-whippet mix and also tends to be distressed and also nervous. The day she showed up for her week-long keep
she stood in my kitchen and also trembled and shivered. She was so anxious that it made me distressed and then my anxiety made her nervous! We just stared at each other nervously for several minutes. I texted Sara and told her Charlie was shuddering and also seemed scared. “Oh, I forgot to offer you her ThunderShirt!”Her what!.?.!? I’m not a pet dog owner, simply a very good pet pal, as well as I ‘d never come across the ThunderShirt. I drove over to Sara’s house and found the grey item of clothing.”What the heck is this thing?”I asked yourself. It was a mysterious, allegedly magical piece of dog garments, and also I misunderstood. Exactly how did this work? Exactly how
did you put it on? I enjoyed a video clip regarding how to place
it on fivetimes
before I got it. I finally got Charlie right into her ThunderShirt. She seemed better, however I couldn’t make sure. I gave her a lot of hugs, anyway. As one of her co-parents told me later on:” It’s Charlie. She’s constantly worried. The ThunderShirt could make her 10 times less anxious as well as she ‘d still look anxious. It makes us feel better.”How ThunderShirts Work The ThunderShirt is a pressure wrap for anxious
pets. It’s planned to have a calming impact by estimating the feeling of a hug and is a prominent drug-free choice for resolving a pet dog’s anxiousness. (See exactly how it worked for this worried dog.)

When a friend recommended to Blizzard that you could swaddle a pet dog the same way moms and dads swaddle children, Blizzard had an aha! moment. Throughout the next thunderstorm, he and his spouse utilized an old tee shirt as well as some air duct tape to create a vest to swaddle Dosi. Their creation functioned and also ultimately led to a business variation of the ThunderShirt made with velcro and also a mix of polyester, rayon, and spandex. You cover it very snugly around your dog’s upper body and also mid-core and also it gives a light, consistent stress. Flickr@KateTerHaar!.?.! Why Pressure Works For human infants, swaddling waddling mimics being back in the womb, with a limited, cocoon of warmth around them. With children, swaddling assists them rest much better, particularly on their backs. There’s now evidence that swaddling and also limited clothing can additionally minimize
stress and anxiety in pets. Dealing with cows, pet researcher Temple Grandin noted that gentle pressure assisted relax the animals before they got vaccinations. She went on to create the hug machine for human beings.
Science Direct had this to report regarding study on stress and anxiety shirts for canines:”After 5 uses of the Anxiety Wrap, 89%of owners reported that it was at the very least partially reliable in treating their canines.” The bottom line is that, if coupled with the ideal training and also the ideal introduction to the vest, the anxiousness shirt can be really successful with some canines. Spraying scents on the t shirt, or combining it with CBD oils or edibles might enhance the chance of success with your dog. Flickr@MajaDumat!.?.! Using the ThunderShirt The ThunderShirt manual suggests an incremental introduction strategy to obtain the most effective results. To put it simply, start utilizing the vest well prior to any fireworks are scheduled or before storm season beings. At first, place the folded ThunderShirt on the ground with a tiny reward on the top, creating a favorable association. Then, adhere to the suitable guidelines and offer the dog a few mins in the vest. Repeat this every couple of days to get them adapted. Preferably, your
pet will certainly get used to the vest and be
happy to use it when the” large moment” comes. Many pets suffering from stress and anxiety or nervousness might benefit from a ThunderShirt, states Denise Herman, the creator as well as head instructor for Empire of the Dog in New York. “It can be anything from generalized stress and anxiety to really details triggered anxiousness, “she claims.
She reports using a ThunderShirt with her very own nervous elderly Chihuahua, that had come to be worried of seem like rattling and squeaking doors window blinds.”I would certainly put theThunderShirt on her, and at the very least 50 percent of the moment, she type of did a huge exhale and had the ability to put down on her side,” Herman says.”She would certainly just relax.”Herman cautions that the vest does not work in all scenarios for all dogs, but says it’s worth attempting. She encourages contacting your veterinarian prior to making use of an anxiety vest on elderly dogs or canines with heart troubles,
and also to stay clear of using the vest throughout severe warmth.( As constantly when introducing something new to your animal’s routine, especially if your pet has wellness worries, it’s ideal to consult with your veterinarian.)

9 Cold-Weather Tips for Dogs and Dog Owners

Winter weather came rather quickly this year, especially in some parts of the country. Temperatures plummeted into the 30s (degrees Fahrenheit) in the South. Snow has already covered parts of the Midwest. I pulled out my dog’s sweatshirts and winter coats from their storage box as I donned my own scarf, hat and coat. Yep, my pups wear coats — they’re senior dogs with very short coats — meeting two of the criteria for doggie coat wearers. You might be surprised at some of the changes you need to make in dog care as weather gets colder. That’s why we’ve put together these quick 8 tips to keep your dog safe and chill during this winter season.
Dog cold tip 1: How cold is too cold for dogs?
It’s too cold for most dogs when the temperature goes below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. © Melissa L. Kauffman
Don’t leave your dog outside alone especially when it drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, because the temperature is too cold for dogs. Sure, your dog has fur, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get dog frostbite (in the paws, ear or tails) or dog hypothermia — and the dog is more in danger of it being too cold for dogs if he’s very young, very old, has a medical issue or has a thin coat. Exceptions are some dog breeds like the Alaskan Malamute that are made for cold weather, although they can still get it if exposed to the cold for too long. In fact, in some areas of the country it is now illegal to keep your dog outside for long amounts of time in extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold.
And, never chain your dog outside. Chaining your dog outside contributes to a whole lot of health and behavioral issues. For information on why chaining your dog outside is harmful or help on how to get a dog you know unchained, check out Unchain Your Dog.
Dog cold tip 2: Dog coats and dog winter clothes for dogs
The Stumptown Jacket by Ruffwear (ruffwear.com) won the 2019 Dogster Editor’s Choice Award for must-have products. Photo courtesy Ruffwear.
Yes, there are dog coats and dog winter clothing for dogs, and some dogs should wear them! No, not all dogs need dog coats, but puppies, seniors or dogs with health issues should definitely have a dog coat or other winter clothes for dogs. Both of my thin-coated mixed breed dogs appreciate a dog coat, especially when it hits the 30s. Dogs breeds with thin fur coats or fur that is kept shorn could use a dog coat; examples are the Chihuahua, Whippet, Greyhound, Italian Greyhound, Miniature Pinscher, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher and Weimaraner. Dogs breeds like Dachshunds and Pembroke Welsh Corgis are so low to the ground that their bellies touch the snow and ice, so belly-protecting dog coats help them.
Dog cold tip 3: Don’t let dog nails get too long during winter
You may have to trim your dog’s nails more often during cold-weather months. “Since dogs spend more time indoors, their paws encounter less friction and their nails get longer,” says Andis Educator and world-class groomer Kendra Otto. “Overgrown nails can contribute to major health issues like sore feet, legs and hips –– and overall discomfort.
Keep ice and snow from being embedded in the paws. Kendra says you can take preventive measures by trimming the hair between your pup’s paws. “Follow the natural bone structure of the foot,” says Kendra. “For clipping paws, I like to use a trimmer that is smaller in diameter, like the Andis EasyClip Mini Clipper/Trimmer. It’s compact and perfect for light-duty clipping around the paws.”
Dog cold tip 4: Protect your dogs paws from winter ice and snow
The Blaze Cross Dog Shoes by Kurgo (kurgo.com) won the 2019 Dogster Editor’s Choice Award for must-have products. Photo courtesy Kurgo.
There are many dog paw-protection products that can help protect your dog’s paws during winter: dog snow boots, dog paw wax and dog-safe ice-melt products like Natural Alternative’s Ice Met. There are several companies that make great dog winter boots, protecting the paws from ice, snow and the salt put on roads and streets to melt the ice. Paw waxes also are good for dog paw protection, as they form a barrier between your dog’s paws and snow and ice, plus soothe irritated, cracked pads on the paws. Dog safe ice-melting products are better than rock salt, which can irritate or burn your dog’s paws and can cause serious health issues if ingested.
Dog cold tip 5: Bathe your dog regularly during cold weather
Yes, it’s cold outside and your dog can’t run out into the yard to shake, shake, shake out the water from his bath. Just spend spend a little more time drying your dog with the towel or hair dryer, or, better yet, take him to a professional groomer.
“A common cool-weather misconception is that dogs don’t need grooming, but as groomers — we know that’s a myth,” says Kendra. “Winter’s stinginess with sunshine stimulates hair growth, making a canine’s coat thicker. She says it’s OK to keep a dog’s coat a bit longer than usual, because it will add protection, but pet parents should keep their dogs on a regular grooming rotation, as it decreases the chances of their doggie needing a shave down. Kendra likes to send pet parents home with Andis’ Soft-Tooth Slicker Brush. “It simultaneously removes undercoat to prevent matting and stimulates hair growth for healthier hair,” she says.
Dog cold tip 6: Use flea-and-tick protection during cold weather
Yes, fleas and ticks can survive through the winter so keep up the winter flea and tick protection for your dog. Ticks and fleas like to hunker down to keep warm, and they could hunker down on your dog, carpet, under your home, in the shed or on outside dog beds. So, keep vigilant with your dog’s flea and tick medications and cleaning even though its colder outside. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some ticks like the Blacklegged Tick search for a host any time winter temperatures are above freezing.
Dog cold tip 7: Keep your dog leashed and away from frozen bodies of water
Avoid frozen bodies of water and leash your dog around frozen bodies of water. For non-moving water like ponds and lakes, ice must build up to at least 4 inches and be clear (not cloudy, dark or light covered) to be safe to walk on. When it’s a moving body of water, like a river or stream, do not walk on it, as just a small crack can break it. Hypothermia happens just seconds after you’ve fallen in, and there have been plenty of incidences where humans have died trying to rescue their dogs that have fallen in. Keeping your dog on a leash, particularly around frozen bodies of water, can keep you and your dog safe.
Dog cold tip 8: Protect your dog from winter poisons
Rock salt can irritate and burn dogs’ paws. Other winter toxins and irritations include Antifreeze and Poinsettias. © Melissa L. Kauffman
Protect your dog from winter-time poisons. As we mentioned earlier, rock salts can cause irritation or burning of dog’s paws, and if your dog licks too much from his paws it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and a host of other nasty issues, not to mention burning his tongue and gastrointestinal tract on the way down. Antifreeze is well-known for being toxic to dogs, because of the ingredient ethylene glycol. It can cause vomiting, loss of appetite and even seizures. And what about the popular holiday plant — poinsettia? Although poinsettias are not as toxic as once thought, they still cause vomiting and irritation to the mouth and stomach. For more poisons, check the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control site.
Dog cold tip 9: Exercise your dog during the winter
And last but not least, keep your dog moving during the winter. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, in 2018 an estimated 56% of dogs in the United States were overweight or obese. The APOP recommends that dogs need at least 30-minutes of physical activity a day with suggested activities being walking, swimming, playing chase, ball retrieving and using remote controlled toys. Unfortunately, during the winter, we pet owners tend to get out with our dogs less due to the cold. If you can’t get outside, play with your dog inside to keep him moving so he doesn’t gain weight over the winter. Obesity affects your dog’s life span and quality of life.
So yes, maybe there are some dangers for your dogs with winter, but manage or navigate them with these tips. There are many fun things to do too, especially for those dogs who were made for winter like the Siberian Husky, Saint Bernard and Chesapeake Bay Retriever. So … let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

When searching for a breeder, do you generally prefer one who focuses solely on the breed you're looking for or do you not really care if they also breed other breeds as well? I feel like someone who focuses on one breed can probably hold more thorough knowledge than someone who breeds two or three types, but people are capable of holding all sorts of in-depth knowledge and I don't have enough experience with breeders to really have an opinion so I'm curious of yours.
For me it really depends. As it so happens, the three breeders I've purchased from thus far only breed a single breed. However, none of them restrict themselves to only one type of dog when it comes to ownership, and none of them have only ever had purebred dogs either. One of them even used to breed other breeds before settling on what they breed now.
For me it is somewhat of a red flag if someone is producing a billion different breeds at once. I really start to question whether they have the type of specialized knowledge about their breeds if they have so many. However if they have only a few and especially if they are similar breeds, it's different to me. One of the dobe breeders who offered me a puppy immediately after Creed died breeds both GSDs and dobes for work and sport. This makes sense to me, they are similar breeds and similar purpose. A chihuahua breeder that I was talking to prior to the pandemic also breeds yorkies, again similar breeds and similar purpose. A doberman breeder I personally know breeds both dobes and whippets- while they are different breeds and different purposes, the number of breeds she has to be knowledgeable on is fairly small, and thus it makes sense to me that she's capable of doing both.
This is also somewhat complicated when discussing mixed breeds, because then it depends if they are trying to fix a specific breed or if they are trying to make their own thing.
In any case, the puppy I'm waiting to see if pregnancy is even a thing yet is from someone who only breeds dobes, and the future border terrier list of breeders at this time are people who only produce border terriers, and when I was still after a dutch shepherd my first choice was someone who only produces dutch shepherds.

No, really, I’m falling into mutt love! Oh wait …
Happy Mayday for Mutts! So let’s talk about them mutts.
Why is there a day for mutts? Well, believe it or not, many people think mutts are inferior to purebred dogs. Now, some of you may harbor that opinion, and that’s totally fine. I respect that. Me, I think differently. I don’t think either is superior or inferior, though I will admit I have a tendency to like mutts better simply for their uniqueness.
#gallery-0-9 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-9 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Another reason to love mutts is their tendency to be healthier, at least in the sense that they miss out on a lot of those genetic diseases many purebred dogs are burdened with simply because they receive such a high dose of specific genetic material, which can (and often does) include genetic diseases. Some of those genetic diseases are, hip dysplasia, most spinal diseases, a lot of heart diseases, certain knee diseases, quite a number of cancers, and many skin, blood, brain, liver, and kidney diseases. You can read more about that, here: http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/the-great-debate-are-mutts-healthier-than-purebreds
Take Pixie, for example. Part Dachshund, part Chihuahua. Dachshunds are prone to a lot of hip, knee, and spine problems. However, because she’s mixed with Chihuahua, her back is somewhat shorter, meaning there isn’t as much pressure on her spine, and her legs are longer, which means she has less of a chance of developing knee or hip issues because her body is more proportionate and more able to support her weight (as long as I don’t let her get fat). That doesn’t mean she absolutely won’t develop any of those spine, knee, or hip conditions, just that she has a lower chance of it.
Now take Luna. She’s got three breeds in her, Border Collie, Boxer, and Whippet. Does that mean she’s without her issues? Certainly not! She’s actually had more issues than our previous dog, Coconut Baby, who was a purebred Chocolate Lab, ever did! We’ve discovered Luna has a very sensitive tummy and digestive issues that seem to go along with that. She would throw up her food almost every day, which was seriously concerning. We took her to the vet, but they couldn’t find anything wrong with her. We tried changing to a chicken-free kibble since chicken can cause allergic reactions. Nothing changed. So then we tried doing a beef-free kibble. Again, no change. Next was grain-free kibble. Once again, nothing changed. Finally, because I’d been researching different types of diets, we decided to try her on a raw diet. This one seems to be the one that’s best for her. However, she still ends up throwing up every now and again, but now the frequency is down to maybe, once or twice a month. Big improvement. Even so, her stomach sensitivity and digestive issues continue and, every once in awhile, I have to readjust her diet. It’s not perfect, but it works.
Even with Luna’s issues, I would still much rather have a mutt to a purebred simply for the lower chance of incidences of genetic disease.
Does this mean I don’t like purebreds? Not at all! I love their distinct characteristics as well as knowing (as much as one can know) what their temperament will be like, and I, like many others, have my favorites among them. Some among those are, the Labrador Retriever, the Great Dane, the Basset Hound, the German Shepherd, the Corgi, the Great Pyrenees, and the Newfoundland. But! Surprise, surprise, I would rather of mixes of those than purebreds ^_^
My sister and I both love the fact that a mutt is a surprise. They’re a surprise in appearance, a surprise in temperament, a surprise in personality; there’s no one like the other. Not saying this isn’t true of purebreds, but some of those things are very much like the other, such as appearance and even temperament. Personality, though, that is unique in each one and why I will never discount purebreds when I decide to adopt again. The point is, my sister and I love journeying with our dogs. We love learning about them. We love figuring out what makes them tick, what’s the best way to train them on an individual level, how much exercise do they need, what should they eat, what makes them happy, what gets them excited, what are their dislikes, are they cuddlers or do they like their space?

Whether you love mutts or purebreds or both, the journey, I think, is really what counts!
