The third tavern wasn’t a tavern, it was some kind of eating house, and it smelt incredible. Grilling meat and spices she couldn’t name made her mouth water, and they had booze too, which was just a bonus. Also a bonus was the girl sat at the counter, lonely with her kebab—that’s what they called it, some of it, the food, kebab, Cherry had learned that much of the language. Kebab. Very nice, was kebab. Spicy, very often. “Looks good,” Cherry said, taking the seat next to her. “Food, I mean. And you, I also mean.” The girl laughed. “You’ve had a busy night, sha’ahkti.” “Nah, not so busy yet.” Cherry motioned at the woman behind the counter, who began plating her up a kebab of her own. “And you don’t wanna call me little sister.” “Oh? Why’s that?” “’Cause I don’t go to bed with family.”
