Forever alone

TVA Loki, soulmate fic, part one.

Loki was on his knees in front of Sif, eyes full of despair as she threatened him yet again.

“You conniving, craven, pathetic worm. You did this.” She pulled him to his feet and punched him in the jaw. Before he could collapse, she kneed him in the crotch and decked him again. “You deserve to be alone and you always will be!” She stormed off, leaving him in a groaning pile on the ground.

A new voice filled the area. “Mm, do you really believe that? Everyone deserves to be loved and to have their people.”

Loki looked up to see a chubby woman watching him with sympathy in her hazel eyes. “And who are you. Another torturer?”

“Nah. I’m not part of the TVA. I’m here for you.”

“If you are not part of the TVA, how are you here?”

“Magic and science make weird combinations.” She sighed. “Did you know that you have a soulmate?”

“I have not met them in 1500 years. Why would I expect to meet them now?”

“The time wasn’t right. Besides, you have a life expectancy of, what, 10,000 or so years? You’re still young.”

Sif stormed from the door once more, and the woman waved her hand. The warrior was engulfed in metal and frozen in place.

“Now, I am your soulmate, but we can never be. Not because of you, dearest Loki. I would love to have you by my side.” She sighed, looking wistful. “But I couldn’t stand seeing my soulmate die. And everyone in my life dies, except me. No, I won’t subject you to that. But how about a variant of me. One who will give you what you need, support and love, and you can be her guide and anchor?”

Loki stared at her. “Who are you?”

“Cyr. One of a kind and not about to let you suffer for something so stupid.” Suddenly, she looked to the side, seeing something he couldn’t. “I am taking you somewhere where you can actually live how you’d like. And no one can stop me.” For just a moment, her entire being changed. She was slender and even paler, eyes glowing a neon orange, fangs peaking from under her lip, nails shifting to claws, and she exuded an aura of demonic danger. She let out a snarl, then smirked. When she turned back to Loki, she looked normal again. “Sorry about that. I was just preventing any untoward interruptions. I can leave you here, to deal with the convoluted plots that are at play. Or I can take you to meet your soulmate and you can live however you’d like.”

“My other soulmate. Because you don’t want me.”

“That’s not what I said, and you know it.” She scolded gently. “Mobius would be an amazing friend for you, as would Sylvie. But do you want more friends than that?”

“How?”

“You hug me, and I’ll make you sleep until you meet her.”

“I am not sleeping beauty.”

“Well, you are a beauty, but no. The way I travel is... not comfortable. And you need a good night’s sleep. When you would wake, in about 8-10 hours, you would meet her.”

Another Sif appeared, and was frozen in metal as well.

“And it’s away from the TVA?”

“You’d never see them again. Any of them. It’s a world not governed by them.”

“How does that work?”

“Well, those in charge gathered a good many universes when doing this, but there are infinite. It is impossible to control all of them.”

“How is that possible?”

“The TVA does weave a bunch of worlds into one, but you cannot grab them all. There are infinite worlds, and even more possibilities. It’s impossible to grab them all.” Cyr explained gently. “But you do need to make a choice.”

“I’ll go. Can I leave a note?”

She smiled softly. “Yes. Hang on.” She pulled a notebook out of her pocket and a pen. “Here.”

He tried to write, but the pen didn’t work. “Well. Never mind I guess.”

“Oh don’t be like that. My other pens were crushed in my last fight but. I have an idea.” She touched the notebook and a thin layer of silvery metal coated it, starting from her finger. She touched the pen as well, but nothing apparently happened. “Try now.”

He tried to write again, and the pen worked. Gold followed his strokes as he wrote a letter more than a note. Cyr wandered over to investigate the walls of his memory while he wrote to give him privacy.

“Okay, I’m ready.” He stood, looking over his shoulder at where the time door had been. There was a melancholy expression, but it faded by the time he turned to Cyr. “Let’s go.”

Cyr held her arms out. “I’m going to knock you out. It’s easier to catch you if we’re already hugging. And I’d like one hug from my soulmate before he gets a new and better life.”

Loki wrapped her in a tight hug, “If you think I deserve love, then so do you.” He whispered in her ear.

“Perhaps.” She hummed before pressing a kiss to his forehead. He dropped like a puppet with cut strings. She caught him easily, gathering him into her arms, and vanished from the memory prison just before Mobius arrived.

Cyr appeared in a bedroom. It’s occupant was sound asleep, curled up in a ball under a weighted blanket and surrounded by plushies. She looked almost identical to how Cyr looked with her illusions. The demon smiled softly, shifting the sleeping god in her arms to one side while she adjusted the blankets with one hand. When there was room to lay Loki down, she did, chuckling as the human immediately rolled over and snuggled into the god. “I have given you the gift of your soulmate, other me. Take care of him, and let him take care of you. You will be phenomenal together.” She tucked them both in together, then gently touched the other woman’s head. Then she vanished as if she’d never been there.

The thing to me is, if you don't think that Mobius is a good love interest for Loki, then I'm really stumped as to who would be a better candidate for that role in his life.

Mobius studied Loki's entire life, saw every single bad thing that Loki had ever done, and he didn't see a villain despite the amount of death and destruction that Loki has caused. He saw a very lonely person with incredible potential/power struggling to find his place and his purpose. He liked the Loki that attacked New York, he felt like he had range. Like...what else could any potential love interest for Loki do that would top seeing and understanding him so profoundly?

To me, it's just like...if not Mobius, who? Sylvie is nowhere near as invested in a relationship with Loki as Mobius is. No one else both genuinely cares about Loki in the way that Mobius does or is able to communicate and work with him as well. So, I guess I just wonder...what else does there need to be in a love interest? What part of the role does Mobius not fulfill, what is he missing? And who would fulfill the role better than he would? Who is understanding and caring for Loki better than he is? Who would make Loki happier? I've literally never seen Loki smile as often or as bright as he does with Mobius so...what else is there?

Like, you're not going to get a better love story for Loki specifically. Heck, I question whether a better love story exists for most characters. I love their friendship, obviously, and if it were to remain a friendship it wouldn't hurt the canon in any way. It just seems to me like if Loki is going to have a love interest ever (which he seems to want)...why create someone new when Mobius is right there performing basically every function that you could ask for in a love interest for Loki? At this point in his story, whose relationship with him could be more profound? It wouldn't be right for him to fall in love with someone else while his relationship with Mobius remained his most important, which I think it inevitably would.

Thinking about the fact that Sylvie helps Loki stay true to himself in the finale. His variant, his other self, his love. When he comes to her, with the responsibility for the future heavy on his shoulders, thinking all he’ll be able to preserve is a narrow timeline overlooked by a dominating regime, thinking he’ll have to kill her just for that, he looks bent. He looks heavy. He looks defeated. And Sylvie doesn’t let him settle for it. Her fire and defiance in the face of almost utter defeat remind him of his own. And while he was now willing to take the ultimate responsibility, thanks to Mobius, he still wasn’t happy with the choice before him, being mischievous and wild himself. And Sylvie gives him the confidence and the determination he needed, to not allow his choices to be dictated to him by someone else, and to fight for something better

For reasons that have everything and nothing to do with the most recent chapters of I&S, I've been thinking a lot about a time travel AU that I will absolutely never write.

Specifically, I want a time travel AU where little-kid!Zuko (age 9-10) travels forward in time and meets angry-teen!Zuko (we're talking like... the Book 1 egghead version of angry-teen!Zuko here). I know that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but the way I envision this playing out is:

Teen!Zuko and kid!Zuko meet, and after a healthy amount of confusion, figure out that they're two different versions of the same person. Kid!Zuko is... not thrilled to be stuck on a rickety old ship with a much grumpier version of himself, but hey! Uncle Iroh is here, and he's got lots of board games and even more free time, so it could be worse. Teen!Zuko, meanwhile, is having a bit of a crisis as he gets slapped in the face with several realizations all at once.

Realization #1: A warship is not a good place for a 9-10 year old boy to live, but there's literally nowhere else in the world where kid!Zuko will be safe. For as long as kid!Zuko is stuck in this timeline, teen!Zuko has to look after him.

Realization #2: Oh, shit. No one has seriously fucked up kid!Zuko yet. His life obviously hasn't been perfect, but this is pretty much the peak of kid!Zuko's sweet-and-innocent phase.

Realization #3: ... as fucked up as teen!Zuko's life has been, he desperately doesn't want to be the person who fucks up kid!Zuko's life.

Cue teen!Zuko scrambling to get his shit together so that he can be a reasonably healthy and stable guardian/big brother figure for his younger self. He starts working on his temper and trying to take Iroh's advice more seriously, and while things don't always go smoothly (kid!Zuko definitely picks up some vigilante tendencies from teen!Zuko. There may or may not be sightings of a tiny Blue Spirit causing trouble up and down the Earth Kingdom coast), teen!Zuko eventually figures out what he's doing. He puts in the work to become a decent role model, he deals with some of his own shit (and his outlook on life improves), he grows to see kid!Zuko as the little brother he never had, and he generally doesn't fuck anything up too badly.

Basically, looking after kid!Zuko teaches teen!Zuko self love (but with extra steps! I don't think grumpy-teen!Zuko could ever learn anything the simple way 😂)

All of that growth makes it harder and harder for teen!Zuko to ever envision himself returning to the Fire Nation. After all, if he wouldn't put his younger self through the pain of going back there and dealing with Ozai, why should he put his present self through that? And on a related note, kid!Zuko definitely has questions about teen!Zuko's scar and banishment. When teen!Zuko reaches a point where he's able to think about the Agni Kai, he can't imagine anything that kid!Zuko could ever do to deserve that kind of treatment, which leads teen!Zuko to question whether he deserved it. And as teen!Zuko starts to come to grips with the fact that he's probably never going back home - certainly not if it would mean putting kid!Zuko through the same pain that teen!Zuko experienced there - he has to start considering what other options he has for the future.

Kid!Zuko may or may not accelerate teen!Zuko's redemption arc even more by befriending various members of the Gaang and dragging his 'big brother' along to meet his new friends/disappearing for a few hours with his new friends only to be 'rescued' by teen!Zuko who is... very surprised and very awkward about it when he realizes who kid!Zuko is hanging out with.

There are obviously lots of time travel AUs out there already, but apparently this one is just going to live in my brain for the forseeable future 😂 As much as I love the standard "post-redemption!Zuko meets Book 1 Zuko and mentors his younger self to accelerate his own redemption/drags himself kicking and screaming toward redemption" time travel AUs that I see around the fandom, I think I'm just hungry for a time travel AU where pre-redemption!Zuko doesn't know what his future could look like. To me, there's just something really appealing about the idea of a time travel AU where his redemption gets accelerated not because he knows his life will get better if he becomes a better person, but because he wants to be someone who his younger self can be proud of.
