I've done a few experiments with the ants, mostly figuring out what foods they prefer over others. strangely enough, they really like plain crackers.

jumping beans, or Mexican jumping beans specifically, move around as a result of moths laying their eggs inside seed pods.

my favourite book ever of all time is grasshopper jungle by Andrew smith. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s so so lovely. It’s basically about a plague that turns people into giant preying mantises, but it’s also about a guy coming to terms with his bisexuality, as well as a bunch of other things that don’t really summarise well. And it’s narrated in first person, and the narrator is the coolest person ever.

My 2nd favourite book is fight club, which you DEFIBITELY need to read 😵😵😵 it’s a lot like the movie,, but honestly better

some other recs include:

- the lovely bones by Alice Sebold, which had me crying at almost every page. It’s so beautiful tbh. It’s about a girl who gets murdered, narrating the lives of everyone she knew from the afterlife. It’s so freaking sad but also so gorgeous

-athletic shorts by Chris crutcher. It’s a collection of six short stories that are vaguely sports related. Going fishing is like. My favourite story ever. However telephone man is narrated by a really racist narrator so there’s racial slurs </3 I skipped that one after a few pages

-the silence of the lambs!!!!!! So much better than the movie lowkey… it’s really lovely snd kinda sad almost. I would def recommend that one

-THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY !!! If you haven’t read it already !!! I read it b4 I watched the movie. It’s honestly not as good but still worth a read.

-the Martian!!!!! I know you like the movie, the book is good too ! It’s super scientific though, so be prepared to not understand most of it. I somehow struggled through it in eighth grade tho, so it’s not that bad.

Animals I associate the masters with, WITHOUT using animals the douji already have. For no reason other than I wanna have a thought experiment with myself and how I associate shit.

Mizho/michel - separately, and owl and a coyote. As a single entity, badger. American, specifically.

Owl because of cool calmness, silence, deadly observation, and it's association with death in kemetic mythos.

Coyote because of their tenacity and sheer ability to adapt and survive, also they live in monogamous pairs in the wild.

Badger because the American Badger is the second most brutal bastard weasel to exist, second to the Honey Badger. But the Honey Badger is African and doesn't have the right vibes.

Fusataro - Jaguar

Look I listened to Neon Tiger once and it ruined me, but the Tiger belongs to Sophia and Lions don't jive right. Fusataro doesn't strike me as some in-your-face king type, no pride, no big roar, but can definitely kill a black caiman with a single bite to the skull. Also Black Jaguars are just badass and regal and I love them and I love Fusataro.

Kei - Rat!

This is an unsurprising one, but it's for more than just his teeth. He cares about his family, he's skittish, but he's not defenseless. I imagine him as a little bit pack-rat like, hoarding little things that might be useful in the future. Rats are very social animals that get depressed alone and I feel like he's a poor wet rat who's stuck in a cage with an aggressive smaller male(Vice) but he deals with it because the alternative is being alone.

Lady Gekko/Rune - Luna Moth/Praying Mantis

Listen I think my reasons for this are obvious. Luna Moth-Moon-Jealousy it fits. BUT ALSO. Luna Moths, once they mature, find love and then die. Which. Yeah. That tracks. And female Praying Mantises are fucking bad ass bugs with a reputation for killing their mates. I don't think I have to explain more than that.

Hana - Honey Badger

Okay I'm writing out my thoughts process as I decide because usually I associate her with a bear cub but I'm avoiding repeating animals and a bear is Eater's. Maybe a Tasmanian Devil but that feels... Almost too easy, I guess? Or maybe she gets the Honey Badger. Yeeee. Cause maybe as she grows her two big role models are probably Mizho and Akitsu and I can absolutely see her going batshit when she hits their age.

Akira - Show-Line Dog, probably something like a Doberman

This one is kinda rough, because I definitely associate him with a young male lion, one who doesn't have a pride yet but is looking to take one over. BUT... Idk if Orghullo's animal is a lion or a foo dog so I'm playing it safe. He's definitely an intelligent animal, and not a dog who's just for looks. He definitely can use his teeth if he has to.

Sumako - Ferret

Domestic, cute, cuddly, wants to hoard her favorite people to herself. But do not forget she is a carnivore and a weasel and ferrets thrive on a whole-prey diet and watching one devour a frozen-thawed mouse is an experience I'll never forget. I want one so bad.

Kaizo - Wild Boar

Highest K:D Ratio of any wild cat. Extremely protective of their family. Not to be under estimated for their size. Sharp witted, deadly, and smol.

Akitsu - Maned Wolf

Pretty legs Tall, diligent for danger, not quite as deadly as they seem but still a predator.

Listen I'm a dog trainer for a living and there is no animal on this planet that fits this man more than this very specific dog breed. Calm, focused, very smart, literally the perfect first-time-owner dog in my opinion. Easy going, forgiving, would give you the world if they could.

Honestly? I've been thinking of being super self indulgent and making beastlings giant insects. Or arthropods in general. Spider Ochette is not off the table. Cus like it would still have that "divide" between them and vertebrates (who would be the equivalent to humans in this case) while still keeping them as animals who are seen as lesser.

As for Ochette I was thinking of making her a tiger moth:

Because they have this thing where they disrupt bat echolocation as self defense which I thought was fitting for her since she's the only person in the village who knows how to fight it seems. Also weirdly makes sense with the monster capturing mechanic.

But then I thought like a carnivore would obviously suit her way more. So that's why I was thinking letting her be a spider. Wasps were another really good option but Wasp Lore (tm) can be really fucked up. And while I love them with all my heart and find them cool as Hell Ochette is not that edgy. And mantises are more about lying in wait than actively chasing prey down. Maybe I'll let Juvah be a mantis.

- Sun Wu Kong cannot fall asleep unless he has something to curl around

- Red Son, Jin, and Yin are the only demons who brush their teeth

- Not matter where or when he falls asleep Macaque will ALWAYS wake up at 2:30 am to get a glass of water

- Pigsy sleeps with a stuffed animal(s)

- MK has the uncanny ability to always tell if his cereal has extra sugar in it

- MK also puts his milk before his cereal

- Macaque will make fun of Sun Wu Kong for being egotistical and loving his self image, but every time he passes by a mirror he’ll stop and stare at his reflection with an odd sense of pride. He likes the way he looks, what he looks like now shows how the past has shaped his current decisions, personality and morality. And he’s okay with that.

- Mei loves things that are shaped like pentagons

- Sun Wu Kong likes painting his claws so he can feel the paint come off when he scratches things

- Red Sons favorite color isn’t red, it’s purple because once you heat something to just the right temperature the flame is purple.

- Sandy is terrified of preying mantises

- Mei had to carry MK home from a gay bar because he got too drunk and started crying when one of the drag queens patted him on the head

- Red Son makes his own jewelry and made a ring that was too small for him, so he ‘conveniently dropped it’ when he was fighting with MK

- Sun Wu Kong’s pupils dilate when he sees MK, Macaque, and his monkey subjects

- MK quotes vines when he makes food (or tries to)

- Jin and Yin think the Boston Tea party was when a bunch of Americans sat down and had tea in the middle of the ocean

- Macaque loves spinning chairs and cannot get dizzy (ty @mischiefmelody​ for the idea B)

- MK actually HATES pastries with a burning passion (he thinks ppl put too much vanilla in them and they’re too sweet) but he never says anything about it bc he doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings

- Pigsy, Tang, Red Son, Mei, and Macaque all snore (from loudest to quietest)

- Macaque likes to hum, and often subconsciously sings harmonies and leads for instrumental songs he hears

- One late night MK walked into the main room of the airship to get a cup of water. It was about 3 in the morning, he turned the lights on, and he scared himself because he thought the lights weren’t as bright.

- Mei was gonna teach Wu Kong how to ride a motorcycle but she got on and Wu Kong was like “aight I got this” and then proceeded to race Mei and get SUPER close to beating her so I’m an order to preserve Wu Kong’s life from getting yeeted of he wins, MK decides that motorcycle riding is banned from future events including the Monkey King

- Sandy can see people’s aura and he uses it as a way to help his therapy sessions go smoother and more comfortably (ex: seeing whether or not someone is in the right headspace to talk about something, or seeing whether or not this person is ready to be consoled or if they need to process things on their own for now)

- While the Journey to the West was a thing the deities in the celestial realm treated the thing as a Telenovela and every week they’d “tune in” to an episode lmao

- Absolutely everyone sucks at math. Not a SINGLE person knows how to do anything than Geometry I

- Red Son is terrible at everything EXCEPT for proofs. He can speed run those because ofc he can mans builds things for a living lmao

-MK loves eating little mozzarella balls and multiple things have resulted from this.

misc. Hollow Knight headcanons

aka just shit floating around in my brain that im not sure if i posted before or not

...

-Despite giving himself eyes, PK still navigates the world primarily through scent and sound. He could find a spot of blood on the opposite side of the White Palace with little effort, and often accidentally terrified his subjects with it. Unfortunately, this means that he is faceblind as fuck, and absolutely terrible at picking up emotions through visual cues. He can do it if he tries, it's just that it almost never occurs to him to do so. He will also never admit to how dependent he is on sniffing people to know who they are (and how much Hollow having no identifying scent when they were a baby bothered him)

-This characteristic lead to Hornet ALSO being extraordinarily faceblind/bad at reading expressions, much to her chagrin. She's way more visual than he is (I base her off a jumping spider, personally), but her way of identifying people is more through a jumbled mix of general body shape, scent, sound, and behavior rather than their faces alone. This works fine in cases where everyone is wearing masks anyways, but without...yeah. No dice

-The White Palace was a physical structure, but given the fact that two powerful gods lived within it, it was prone to shifting corridors, confusing pathways, and a general sense of being 'alive' despite being constructed of metal and marble. If neither of the royals wanted to be found, the Palace would not yield their secrets, and those who dwelled within its walls often mentioned areas within the Palace where time felt as if it had slowed to a stop and/or lingered in a bygone era, as if the structure itself was reminiscing on old memories

-Herrah can't bake for the life of her, but she makes some absolutely smokin' spider barbecue

-Lurien DOES have the gift of foresight (in Hallownest, under PK's rule, you have a 100% chance of having a free mind, a 55% chance of having soul magic, and a roughly 5% chance of having some sort of ability related to sight), but even if he's capable of inducing it/reading it better than other mortal bugs, it's still terrible. Most of the time it manifests simply as brief visions of what can possibly happen and can be misinterpreted as intrusive thoughts, which is very stressful and tiresome for him. Attempting to glean more from the visions also gives him a hellishly bad migraine, so he usually just uses this gift in the proximity of PK (who can offer easy soul healing/verify if its a vision or just anxiety). Despite these downsides, his gift of foresight DOES come in handy for PK, because PK's foresight is so broad that narrowing it all down to important, dramatic events can be a little difficult if they're not on a world-ending level

-Cuts of raw vengefly or aspid meat with fresh eggs gutted from the corpse is a popular dish in Hallownest, typically served right after the prey item has been cleaned. It was originally scorned as a dish for savages like the mantids/poor farmers, but quickly became popular as a sushi-like street food as Hallownest grew

-Farming was done primarily by the banks of the Blue Lake, focusing on algae collection, lakeweed cultivation, and wild grain farming (similar to rice). This was really only possible with WL's blessings, and did not involve animal domestication. The closest that the beetle tribe came to domesticating prey was simply leaving large colonies aside with food items as gurenteed hunting-caverns, which developed entirely separately from the hunters of Deepnest's method of feeding carver hatchers the viscera from their kills as a means of producing more dirtcarvers

-The mushrooms of the fungal wastes (and the Shrumal tribe by extension) are entirely edible if prepared right, and make for some excellent synthetic meat in times of lean hunting. Only the mantises know how to do this, however, and their staunch refusal to share their culinary secrets have lead to many sulfurous gas poisonings by overzealous cooks and explorers who tried to replicate their recipes

-Wyrms are technically omnivorous, but derive the most nutrients/soul from fresh, raw meat, which makes them apex predators simply by virtue of how much they need to eat. There is only one plant in the world that can poison them, which grows far from Hallownest and is known only as 'the killer' in wyrmtongue

-Spiders, on the other hands, are obligate carnivores, so pretty much all of their cuisine has a centerpiece of meat with shrooms or roots added onto the side for extra flavor. Fruit is hard to come by in spider meals, but is highly sought after despite many of them being allergic to it. Leaves are pretty much nonexistant

-Hornet inherited the ability to be allergic to some fruits from her mom, which she remained unaware of for several years. She thinks it's bullshit.

a lot of ppl have shown up on my & other ppl's posts abt 'wow manipulation and spiders? why??' going 'well but there are spider tricksters in mythology'

and like... yeah, ok, there are. but are there that many, compared to other animal tricksters, and spider not-tricksters? enough to justify the exclusivity of spiders to the one entity??

so i. made a list, as i do. (you can't judge me for this you should know by now i make lists at the SLIGHTEST provocation) actually i made TWO lists, one of spiders in mythology & how they line up with tma's entities, and one of tricksters in mythology. (i knew some of these already but i also got a lot of them off of wikipedia. also tried to avoid detailing the uh. worse aspects of mythologies. we all know abt it but that isn't the point here.)

(we are ignoring for now my theory that the web's actually shit at manipulation and mostly just does control, and considering any spider that does manipulation OR control to be web-aligned)

spiders in mythology (and how they align w/ tma's various entities, if they even do):

anansi: okay i'll give you this one! yeah he is the trickster spider! yeah he lies & manipulates! he's not really uhhhh evil in any way or would inspire ppl to generate fear for the entities to shape themselves to, but ok yeah i'll give you that one as web!

arachne: she literally just wove tapestries? got into a competition with athena and wove a tapestry detailing the infidelities of the gods. like, if anything she is eye, going around revealing truths and stuff.

uttu: mostly seems to be about creation? weaving & plants. hid herself in her web, which isn't manipulation at all, it's just hiding. not rly entity aligned at all, at worst she's probably a victim of like, the hunt? maybe?

iktomi: another trickster! p much the same boat as anansi, where he's not particularly evil, but we'll let him be web.

spider grandmother: she just is helpful!! she creates & guides & protects! no entities.

ai apaec: creator & leader god again. only sometimes a spider.

djieien: just a very strong spider who hid its heart so it couldn't be killed? like, if anything, end.

great goddess of teotihuacan: associated with spiders, maybe not a spider herself? doesn't seem to be much known abt her, but potentially underworld, darkness, earth, creation, lots of things. no mention of manipulation or control.

nareau: another creation god. i guess he does do some arguably flesh-aligned stuff in that creation, but like, so do a lot of other creation myths.

areop-enap: again creation! hmm what a pattern emerges. doesn't seem particularly aligned with any entities.

tsuchigumo: ok i can give you web here i guess? bcos it does trick ppl, even if that tricking also kind of slides into spiral/stranger territory. and hunt territory obvs it literally is there to consume prey. also can give you evil here.

EDIT bcos ppl keep misunderstanding: i don't think tricksters are the main source of the fear of manipulation. i don't even think tricksters should be considered a reasonable source for the web's manifestations. BUT people kept bringing them up when i had issues with the web's spider exclusivity (when both spiders and manipulation SHOULD have multiple metaphors and not be exclusive to each other) and that is why i made this list, thank you.

(also i'm aware there are ways to justify spiders meaning control sometimes. given the worldbuilding of tma, i don't think there's a way to justify them meaning control always. but that's a different post.)

Chapter 1- Let Me Tell You a Story…

Let me tell you about a time when I met a Magic Knight Captain, who, at first glance, was overwhelmingly daunting. For awhile I was working in a popular pub in the capital. From time to time I would see various Magic Knights come into the pub to relax for the evening. Heck, we would even see groups of Magic Knights get together for the sole purpose of trying to get girls at mixers. Usually, it resulted in utter failure, ending in everyone either leaving alone, or a huge bar fight. Magic Knight Captains however, were always a rare sight. After all, out of all the kingdom's residents there are only nine captains. From what I’ve seen and from stories I’ve heard, there seemed to be a common trend that someone associated with the Magic Knights seemed to be an acquired taste.

When I first saw Jack the Ripper, the Magic Knight Captain of the Green Mantises, I won’t lie - he seemed dangerous. The kind of dangerous that if I would make the slightest mistake he would have killed me on the spot. Plus, there were rumours about him that didn't help this visage.

When he entered the pub with long defined strides, he was tall and lean but clearly built. He had shoulder length black hair which was wild and untamed. His shirt barely covered his torso leaving little to the imagination of his abs, which were also very clearly defined. His golden eyes were sharp and focused, while he wore a sinister smile. He wore a green folded half cape adorned with the logo of the Green Mantises with his grimoire holstered behind him.

Taking a deep breath, I shook off the thought of danger, after all he was not in my section so he wasn’t my concern. I looked around to find the waitress that was serving his section, and I found she was tending to some young men at another table who were fawning over her. I recall thinking to myself that she would get to him soon enough, and that he wasn’t my problem. I continued my evening as normal, with frequent glances over in his direction. Every now again I would catch him, staring back at me with a grin plastered on his face, though his eyes were shooting daggers. This caused the hairs at the back of my neck to stand on end. It was intense, having his powerful gaze directed at me. I couldn’t help it. His leering gaze was enough to jumpstart my imagination.

My mind wanders to a place where Jack has me pinned, both hands above my head in only one of his. This seems almost too easy for him, as if he does these sorts of things on the regular. Staring intently at me while I trembled with anticipation of his touch below him. His one hand glided over my exposed skin slowly tracing down between my legs, encircling my clit, teasing me. His face drawing near mine as if he would be breathing in my essence. I begged him for more… Suddenly snapping back to reality, I caught myself staring at him, with heat pooling deep in my center.

‘Oh no, I thought to myself, he hasn’t even been served yet!’ I realized, and was overcome by a sense of panic. There seemed to be a complete lack of service to his table, as there we no drinks or even silverware to be found. I looked around for his server and found her to still be invested at her previous table, I’m guessing she enjoys the attention. I quickly ran over to his table mentally preparing myself for the worst. ‘No wonder he was shooting daggers at me’ I thought as I steadied my breath.

Mustering up my courage, I head over to his table. “Hello sir! Has anyone come to take your order yet?” Surprisingly, I was able to give him a genuine smile with ease. He leaned over the table with a leering gaze.

“Heh, it’s about time! I wanted an ale 20 minutes ago!” He muttered, without enthusiasm. Tilting his head slightly to the side, he inspected me up and down. His long fingers tapped on the tabletop impatiently, and I quickly bowed to him in an apologetic fashion. Peeking up, I thought I could see his eyes trailing to my exposed cleavage.

I hope he likes the view, I wonder how well my breasts would fit in his hands…

“Absolutely, I do apologize about the long wait! I’ll have that drink for you right away.” A smirk crossed his lips, it was kinda cute, if he didn’t look like he wanted to cut me. I quickly ran off to grab his first drink without delay. I wasn’t looking, but I could feel his eyes on my back, and my behind, as I quickly headed to the bar.

Upon returning he seemed somewhat impressed. I quickly handed his drink to him and plucked the mug from my grasp, his fingers feathering mine. His hands were large, strong, and rugged. He drank the ale in one swig, and his long tongue slowly licked up the dribble of alcohol on his chin.

Oh that tongue! I could clearly see myself falling prey to his strong grasp, forcing me to sit on his face as he licks up my nectar, lunging that tongue deep inside. Over, and over, and over until I can’t take it anymore... My breath hitches in my throat as reality hits me.

“Get me another!” he said as he thrusted the mug towards me. His gaze softened ever so slightly as surprise crossed my face.

“Sure thing, I take it you had a rough day today?” I quietly said to him as I grasped the still cool mug from his clutch.

“I didn’t have a bad day, heh heh… I was just really thirsty. In fact, I had a great day, I got to slice up some of my squad who couldn’t make the cut.” He said in a harsh but oddly jovial tone. I couldn’t help but to giggle at the pun. I know I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help myself. A blush bloomed across my cheeks, feeling the heat rising inside I quickly turned around to grab him another drink from the bar, trying to calm myself down.

“Heyyyyy purdy lady...” a drunken man slurred. “How bout you spend some time with me and my boyz, come here sit on my lap.” His strong hand gripped tightly on my wrist, causing me to drop the empty mug in shock.

This was the table that the other waitress had been tending. I use the word ‘tending’ lightly, as she was currently perched on a gentleman’s lap serving drinks.

“Come on, it’ll be more fun if you join us!” The waitress purred.

“Oh no! Please let me go sir, you’re hurting me!” He tightened his grasp and pulled me to sit down on him. I could feel his member press up against me. “Let go of me!”

The other waitress piped up “Oh don’t be like that! You know if you treat these guys right they will give you some good tips!” She giggled as she wiggled further down into her guests lap.

“Yeah, we’ll give you good tips if you help entertain us, your friend can only do so much. I want to feel you squirm on my lap, too.” The brute said in a lecherous tone, as he grabbed tighter and pulled me closer into him. It was so disgusting, I remember closing my eyes so tight trying to pretend this wasn’t actually happening.

“Hey loser! Do you want to see me slice off your hands without cutting the woman? I can promise you it’s really impressive!” Green blades of mana spawn from the Knight Captain's arms and he runs his long tongue across the blade. I looked up at him, right now in this moment I was so thankful he came to my rescue. Or at least part of me was hoping he was coming to my rescue.

“Piss off bean pole, pretty lady’s going to be entertaining me and my lads tonight.” He grabbed even tighter than before as I gasped in pain, it was sure to leave a bruise later.

“Hey man, ya know that’s the Magic Knight Captain, Jack the Ripper… I wouldn’t mess with him, he's crazy.” One of the assailant's comrades chimed in.

“Heh heh, you don’t even seem to be worth slicing up, but it could be a fun challenge to cut you to bits without getting a drop of blood on the girl. Who wants to see me do it? I do like a challenge” Jack gestured to the now silent pub.

Looking up at the Captain, my eyes pleaded for him to get rid of these drunken bastards. I didn’t really care how, I just wanted them gone. It was as if he could read my mind, as he quickly maneuvered towards the man and sliced with extreme precision, leaving only his undergarments. The drunkard pushed me off in a panic and Jack managed to catch me from falling flat on my bottom. The poor excuse of a man clumsily staggered and ran out the door with his friends in tow, leaving the waitress behind scared and confused.

“Th-thank you, s-sir.” My back pressed up so close to his body, I looked back up to him. Noticing that he’s so warm…

“You will need to be careful when walking home tonight.” He said earnestly, still holding onto me. It took me a moment to register that I was still in his arms, I pulled myself away from his warm grasp, which left me disappointed.

“I’m off in an hour, if you're still around by then I might just get you a drink as a thank you.” A bright grin lit up his face.

I turned back to continue work, picking up the mug that I had dropped onto the floor. Wiping up the droplets of ale so no one would slip,I wondered if I could engineer a way to fall, preferably into his arms… Bringing the mug to the back, the other waitress that had gotten a little too comfortable at her only table pulled me aside with a sneer.

“You know I was working that table all night! Now because of your stupid stunt they stuffed me with the bill and I got nothing from it!” She berated. “You’re the one who’s going to pay for that table's drinks tonight because you couldn't play nice with those drunks.”

“You know if you did your damned job you would have more than enough tips to cover that. I’m not paying for those disgusting pigs because you want to play as a whore in a brothel.” I growled back, pushing against her clenched fist. “You need to get out of my face, I have people who are hungry and thirsty to take care of. Either you can help me and take care of your section or go home because you're wasting everyone’s time!” I pushed her back, though a little harder than intended, and she fell back into the wall and slid down. She began to cry and pretending to be hurt, ‘Great she’s making a scene’ I thought to myself.

“What is going on here?” I heard the manager's voice and the pit of my stomach sank to the bottom of my feet. This girl had a thing with the bar manager for a while now. I knew that I was done for the moment she ran crying into his arms spewing lies that I attacked her after scaring off a large group of customers and refusing to take responsibility and pay their bill. He turned to me with sheer abhorrence in his eyes.

“You’re fired. Get out of my pub.” He said curtly as she smiled under the crocodile tears streaming down her face.

“Who needs a good worker when you have a good lay right?” I stated plainly as I tossed the manager some coins. “This is for the table with the Green Mantis Captain, it should cover his drinks and one more if you think you’re competent enough to bring him one without falling on his cock too.” I chided.

Making sure to grab my bag before I left, I made a beeline for the door, trying to keep my head held high. I cannot allow myself to show any weakness. I was intentionally avoiding any possible glances with the Magic Knight Captain, as I had promised him to buy him a drink as thanks. But what I didn’t promise was to stay and enjoy the drink with him. Would he even enjoy having me in his presence?

“Leaving so soon? I thought you would buy me a drink heh heh. Don’t tell me you're trying to get out of your promise! If you did, I wouldn’t have to wonder what it would be like to slice up something so innocent. Heh heh heh.” A familiar voice said while looming over me with a large grin plastered across his face and his cheeks rosy from the alcohol.

“I’m sorry about that! My shift finished early tonight, but I did pay for your drinks and one more if you wanted. I just have to go now.” I said faking a smile, as I was trying to keep my injured pride concealed. I turned to walk away towards the door to leave. Opening the door the air outside was cool as it washed over me causing me to shiver. The uniform was short and didn’t provide much in the way of protection from the cold. I wonder what my ass looks like from behind, and if he is paying any attention to my departure.

hey you’ve kept mantids right... do u have any care tips for a beginner? i’m picking up my first babies next week ( two texas unicorn nymphs ) and i’m pretty confident in my abilities, but mantids are one of the few inverts i’ve never had before so i figured it’d be worth it to ask around !

ill just list some things that i DONT see on mantis care guides

mantises are very stupid and one of their key instincts is that if they grab something in their claw in a predatory strike, they will not let go and will try to eat it. my mantis paladin is currently attempting to eat the feeding tongs which are in one claw, while the mealworm is in the other. theyll eventually figure it out and stop doing that, but this means DO NOT HOLD THEM WHILE YOU FEED THEM, and if you feed them out of their cage make sure its not near anything that could potentially be dangerous if a dumb insect mistakes it for food. i did that a few times because i am also very stupid and both of my mantises have tried to eat me (GREEN BEAN succeeded in drawing blood).

both of my mantids got sick as nymphs and i would find dark smears of mantis vomit on the sides of their enclosures. a lot of mantid sources call a certain illness “the black death” or etc but i think its fairly common for non deadly vomit problems to occur. their health improved with their enclosures being cleaned and being fed some diluted raw honey (not sure if it actually works but people swear it has antibiotic properties). also id strongly advise not feeding them crickets, that seems to be a general consensus among mantid keepers and in my experience most of their health problems occurred when they had crickets (i keep mealworms). i hear some people suggest cockroaches instead but im skeptical that theyre less likely to catch something from roaches because mantids ARE most closely related to roaches but thats my untested opinion.

if they escape, check your ceiling. GREEN BEAN escaped only once and paladin escaped like 5 times and 5/6 of those times they were in a corner on the ceiling in my room. if they dont have their wings yet check the sides of tall objects like a dresser or whatever. if you know they were in their cage only a short while ago, obviously check around there first, but when they escape they will sometimes just go nuts (i found paladin on the opposite end of the room when she was a nymph which is a massive distance when you cant fly). the trend is they like to be in high places and they like to be sideways or upside down, so thats where you want to look.

another one is if your mantis isnt eating or cant properly use their claws, or is a wuss and gets scared of their food, one almost guaranteed way to get them to eat is cutting their prey and putting the guts on their mouthparts. that will induce them to start feeding . i dont see a lot of people talking about this but its a really important thing to know if you have any issues.

paladin has eye rub that didnt heal in her final moult, and is impacting her vision and makes catching prey difficult, so most of the time i snip the mealworms head off with scissors and poke her face with the guts and shes like “AHHHH THING IN MY FACE oh wait food”. here she is being confused because she grabbed the feeding tongs and her tiny brain cant process whats going on. if they have an injury that prevents hunting or they just wont hunt because theyre a wuss, this is a pretty good workaround. ive heard of people whose mantids lost both of their raptorial claws in a bad final moult but lived full lives being fed this way

ok sorry if this is a stupid question, but mantids have always been my fav insect and ive always wanted to keep some. but ever since i learned that they can eat things like turtles, i'm always worried about if they can bite me very painfully 😅 since their mandibles are apparently that strong. has any of your mantids drawn blood? how do you avoid getting nibbled?

oh man,  this is actually something i have experience in.if you go through my #mine tag, youll actually see that i have made several posts about my hierodula membranacea Babey, who absolutely LOVES fingers, including a pic of my bleeding finger.im not gonna lie, a grown 11cm mantis biting you in the tip of your finger DOES hurt. especially since you dont want to pry her off forcefully and potentially hurt her, so she will continue digging in.BUT, dear anon, good news.it is VERY easy to avoid. 

a) the smaller a mantis, the smaller their mandibles and it also depends on the species. Candy, my heterochaeta orientalis, is very long, but her head is small and fragile. she even gets different food from other mantises her size because her mouth is tiny. i got bitten by paradoxa before and its barely noticeable. like a tiny faint needle prick. 

different species are also different degrees of aggressive. paradoxa are very timid and allegedly even live well together in groups, so the likelihood of them attacking you is pretty much zero. meanwhile hierodula are big, strong, and aggressive (those are also amongst the ones that can catch hummingbirds, ive never heard of turtles) and have much sharper offensive reflexes. so depending on the species you wanna get you might not even have anything to worry about!

b) they dont attack randomly and dont typically bite in defense. they usually make themselves tall and kind of ‘punch’ with their arms when they feel threatened. no biting involved. whenever babey bit me it was because i was too impatient in handling her and my wriggling finger seemed like a food source - or i stupidly fed her crickets from my hands because im an idiot. shes big, so a finger seems like adequate prey to her.

all this can be avoided by getting proper equipment like tweezers you can feed them from and when you collect them from their terrarium scooping them up with a thick stick or a big cup or something first. once they’re securely on your hand it is unlikely theyll still decide to bite you. im also a firm believer that they /do/ get used to handling if you do it frequently enough, even if they can’t be trained in the classical sense. 

c) no venemous species of mantises exist, so except for the pain from the wound theres not really anything that can happen and it heals quickly. 

d) the sharp spines on their femurs that they use to hold their prey can be pretty painful as well (comparable to blackberry thorns) but again, it is unlikely you will be caught like that unless youre confused with food! Potato once accidentally ‘caught’ me because my hand was next to a cricket and immediately released me once she realized her mistake. 

tl;dr biting is rare and can be very easily avoided. i know breeders who have never ever been hurt! so dont let that stop you from keeping these lovable beauties if you want to!hope i could be of help :3

|| For the record. Muse does not Equal Mod. I’m not squeamish around bugs at all. In fact, friends call me when they see big ass roaches because they know I’m not scared of them.

The ONLY bugs I’ll squash are those that bite (spiders, ants) or those that become pests (roaches, termites, flies, gnats). The only bugs that TRULY gross me out personally are roaches because they’re so big and juicy (lmfao) and anything that drinks human blood like mosquitoes or lice.

I actually like preying mantises, butterflies, doodle bugs, etc. 

Insect-phobia isn’t really something I have. But I thought it’d be funny for Elsa to have it because she loves beautiful things and cleanliness and bugs inside an abode are usually a sign of dirt. 

Also A Bug’s Life is seriously underrated as a Pixar movie, j/s!

Franny Career HC Dump #8

Apart from her fame as a bluegrass-folk singer and a member of the all Asian diaspora indie band Seoul Hanoi’d in the Anglophone world, and as a singer-songwriter, drama OST singer, and sought after featured artist in Cambodia, Franny is decently known throughout the French, German, and Italian-speaking world. 

 Part of that is due to over a decade of collaboration with her paternal cousin, Swiss singer-songwriter Jakob "Köbi" Framagucci (stage name Köbi Fram).

 Franny and Köbi 

 Jakob Framagucci is nine years Franny’s junior, the son of her father’s youngest brother (Amaury Framagucci, a retired UN Employee) and his wife Hannelore Schmid. 

 Köbi sings mainly in Swiss German and Franny is not herself fluent in German but has a good enough grasp on the language to sing it. When they songwrite together, they do it in French or Italian, which Köbi also sings in. He is fluent in English as well but struggles to write songs in the language so most of his English songs were either written by Franny for him, or, he gave her Italian or French lyrics and she translated them to the melody of the music he wrote.

 She’s featured on several songs on his albums and when visiting Switzerland they will record some covers together or a duet version of one of their songs for his YouTube channel, or make some music TikToks together because Köbi is indeed a millennial (born 1989) so is even more social media savvy than Franny. They’ve got that self marketing on lock.

 They’re a duo just as dynamic as Franny and Daniel Maitland in Dara & Danny, and even have an official duo side project album in the works -- their official duo name is “We Are Friendly Knives”, shortened to “Friendly Knives” -- because their initials are F and K and because Friendly Knives was the first two words that popped into Franny’s head while they were drunk and trying to come up with a name.

 That album should be dropping sometime in March.

And stemming from her collaborations with her cousin, she’s collaborated with several other Italian, French, and German language artists. Mostly Swiss artists but due to her various cousins in entertainment, through friends of her cousins and their friends she’s connected with and collaborated with Italians, French, French-Canadians, Belgians, and Germans.

 Franny’s Own Merits

 Apart from Franny and Köbi benefiting from each other, it helps that Franny is actually fluent in Italian and French.

 She’s recorded an entire album of original French-language songs whose five singles all peaked at 15 or above on the Swiss, Belgian, and French charts, and two peaked at 5 or above on the Canadian charts and the other three hit 20-30. 

 One song, whose title translates to Preying Mantis peaked at number 1 and stayed there for two weeks, and didn’t leave the top five for about two months. The song was a cold takedown of former collaborator, English songwriter Miles Harris. (Think Jenny Lewis’ My Pet Snakes level shade.) Franny hasn’t outright said it was about him but fans of her following the #drama between them (involving him screwing her out of money from things they worked on together, allegations he straight up stole work not intended to be used by him, accusations of anti-Asian racism including directed at her, alleged sexual harassment that Franny actually filed a civil suit against him for,  and just general creative differences) are 100% positive it's about him. When asked if the song is about anybody in particular, Franny coyly responded with “I think all songs are about someone.”

 She wrote such a scathing song in French in order to get her feelings out but to not stir the pot as much as if she’d just done it in English.

 The title is Preying Mantis because female praying (with an A) mantises eat their mates and it’s a fuck you song by a woman about a man she once collaborated well with hence Preying with a “e”, but also bc Miles Harris used her trust in him to leech off her, steal from her, and tried to exert power over her. It’s got layers.

Inspired by Linda Ronstadt’s Canciones de Mi Padre album, Franny also has put out an album of all Italian, French, and German songs from the 60s-70s. Like many people don’t know about Linda Ronstadt’s Mexican heritage, people don’t know Franny’s Swiss heritage. The album is titled From My Father’s Record Player.

 Her label was like “girl don’t do it” and she was like “I will literally pay for the production myself if you’re so against it but I feel like I’m going to die if I don’t use my audience to try and get these songs to new ears. This music is just as important to my development and background as a musician and singer as musicals, bluegrass, country, and jazz music are.”

 The album actually sold comparable to her others and her covers of the songs were included on soundtracks for French and Italian movies and tv.

Response   The response to the album was overwhelmingly positive. Some of the artists she covered who were still living said they loved her versions of the songs. When asked by a music journalist why doing the album was so important to her she responded:

 “When I ask you to imagine a Swiss person, you don’t picture someone who looks like me. But like, I’m Swiss. I’m a citizen of Switzerland, I was a citizen before I was given my Cambodian citizenship, and I went to Switzerland before I got a chance to visit Cambodia the first time. Whether or not I look Swiss is irrelevant, because I am. And when my father came to the US from Switzerland he brought his languages and the music in those languages with him.”

 And in another interview:

 “Mia Martini and Jacques Dutronc were as vital to my development as a musician as Dolly Parton, Jenny Lewis, and Ella Fitzgerald. People look at me and they either see ‘oh she’s a mixed Asian’ or they see someone ambiguously brown. Nobody thinks about the other half. They only consider my Asianness to be ‘other’ and don’t think that my white father could be anything but a run-of-the-mill WASP American man, but he’s not American at all. He didn’t become a US citizen until he was in his fifties and that was only because he was getting annoyed with filing paperwork every few years. I’m very proudly and loudly Cambodian, but I’m proud of my Swiss side too.” 

The album helped further her reach outside of English and Khmer speaking audiences.

 Franny’s dealt with tweets and comments fired at her questioning her claim to Swiss heritage in response to an Instagram photo she posted on Swiss National Day where she was wearing folk costume typical of a Ticino Swiss and her brothers in Geneva folk costume to represent the home cantons of their grandparents, drinking at a Swiss National Day festival. Since she’s very open that her father is her stepfather, technically, people want to raise questions about if it’s cultural appropriation. Since Franny is so vocal against white people appropriating Asian cultures for the aesthetic.

 When asked if she felt she could claim Swiss heritage when her father is technically her stepfather in another interview, she replied:

  “Yes. Just as much as my genetically very white brothers can claim our mother’s Cambodian culture, and my adopted son can claim my Southern, Swiss, and Cambodian cultures. Culture is the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of the particular nation, people, or other social group that you are raised in. Adopted children and stepchildren fit that category. Telling me, or my brothers, or my son that they can’t own the heritage of their adopted families is really gross and just pushes the narrative that if they’re not your blood, they’re not really yours. I hold citizenship in Switzerland via my father; I am every bit Swiss as I am Cambodian, as I am American.”

 Adoption advocacy groups have praised her for this statement and the Swiss president even retweeted that article and said “Switzerland is proud to be represented by Franny Sor Robinson. I thank your father for giving you a love for his homeland and the languages that call it home.”
