An embarrassment of riches
That's what this summer season is in regards to anime series. There were seasons (like this one) where the lack of good new releases was strong. Even last season was a bit so-so. Not this one!
I rounded up some of its Isekai already (together with some others I recently watched), but there's more. Oh yes!
Don't watch EPISODE 0!!
By which I mean "Dead Dead Demons DeDeDe Destruction". Seriously. If you want some minor spoilers I'm willing to oblige, but episode 0 apparently spoils the whole run of the series before it even starts. WTF?!?
Tumblr media
"Dead Demons" presents itself (if you start with episode 1) as a story of school girls in Tokyo. Except a huge ass mothership shows up over the city, some people die, and then for a while, a whole lot of nothing happens. People live their lives and get used to this new development... somewhat.
But not really. People start to go nuts. (And who wouldn't?) The government is hush-hush. UFOs get shot down over inhabited districts. People die. And we as viewers get clued in to even more strange stuff happening.
Tumblr media
Apparently the show is a re-cut of two movies into an anime series (and episode "0" a sort of epilogue). Its developments are dark and weird and lure you in. And somehow a few weirdo high school seniors growing into adults amid this unfolding slow motion drama is the icing on the cake.
Just don't watch episode 0.
2.5 Dimensional Seduction
I noticed this one as manga but didn't follow up to reading it first. And here it is, in animated glory! (It looks really good.)
Nerd boy is the only remaining member of the manga club where he mostly obsesses about his favorite character, Liliel, watching this old anime by himself. He, of course, has no interest in "3D girls" and only in his beloved waifu. (How serious he is you will see when you get to see his bedroom a few episodes later. I wonder what his mother thinks when she walks in...)
Tumblr media
In comes Ririka, a cosplayer-in-the-making which obsesses about... Liliel! A girl our protagonist can nerd out with, and her cosplay of his beloved character is, of course, perfect. Conflicting feelings arise in no time.
A childhood friend (with a confirmed crush) shows up in episode 2 but given how they are billed in the credits and everywhere, we can safely assume that first girl wins, which makes this "love triangle" a bit sad and cruel right out of the gate.
Tumblr media
The series actually has, beyond its cute antics, a few good observations to make about cosplay, its fanbase, etc. Nothing world-changing here so far, it doesn't obsess over details like "My Dress-Up Darling" does, but somehow that was refreshing.
It's a silly, predictable show with people tripping over and onto each other, as expected. (But not in a way where I fear they'd need dental work after.) It's cute and charming and I like it.
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines
Anime titles are often abbreviations of their longer version, but this one is a play on words as well. "Makeinu" means "loser" and is built from the kanji for "lose" and "dog." "Makeine" in turn is a contraction of "lose" and "heroine." And the name's the program!
As the cast grows, we're introduced to a series of girls experiencing a unrequited crush and finding themselves rejected or realizing that they have no chance.
Tumblr media
And our protagonist ends up getting involved in all of these scenarios right when they come to heads.
In principle this is a harem comedy, but its setup is clever enough and it's damn funny without resorting to being over-the-top and stupid. It doesn't seem to overdo the cringe and the characters get their own fleshing out, including the cast surrounding the literature/writing club that becomes the epicenter of it.
Wins the award for the most quirky bow tie design a school uninform can have.
Tumblr media
Love is indivisible by twins
Can a show that has its spoiler in the title surprise you? Why yes, it can!
The show really revolves around our two protagonists, which I'd say are the girls (which also act as narrators), not the guy. They are twins, of course, but of different temperament, and they are childhood friends with the boy living nearby.
He has this big crush on the one sharing his literary interests, only to be asked out by the other. (Of course he's oblivious both have crushes on him.) In an unusual take on the genre, we see a full love story unfold in episode 1. So, if you were there for the first kiss, you can switch off now.
I don't think you should, though. The show wants to be a bit creative with its setup in spite of its spoilery name. I guess it will be interesting enough to see how it gets through the drama stage to a resolution.
The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses
(Technically this has been around since last year but quickly got a season 2. Also, I started watching it only now.)
Guy is off to Tokyo, studying, when his grandma dies, his only living relative and primary caregiver after his parents' death. They left on bad terms, and now he finds she took five strangers in in the year before her death - five young girls she ran the café with that was her livelihood.
Tumblr media
They're off to a really bad start and frankly, I would have been totally on his side if he just kicked them out. At least one of them was up for blackmailing him (and also taking advantage that one of her friends has no self control when drunk).
The setup is unconvincing. When you follow the first season you see no clear indication why the MC was having a bad relationship with his grandma, he seems to go back and forth between a good guy and insightful and being brash and immature. The guy he turns out to be during the show seems to not follow from the guy we meet at first.
It's clear to see that the setup for the show is ... pretty much "The Quintessential Quintuplets" all over again. With a few differences... mostly in execution. One thing is that the show is nowhere near the drama level of the Quintuplets, with their regular "decision events" that turn out to be postponed. For almost a whole season it managed to avoid the "It's fated!" trap, only to then insist that all these girls have grandmothers who worked at a cafe his grandfather ran when he was his age. Oh bugger... And well, by putting a future scene with a daughter in that implies one of the cast is her mom. Yep, another Quintuplets move (though that show was more about showing weddings). To be fair, though, it doesn't pull this constantly.
Tumblr media
Also, season 2 has one really good reason to apologize to Brazilians everywhere.
The show in general is funny and lighthearted, though the girls seem all too keen to be violent towards the protagonist for situations they pretty much cause themselves. (In a nice twist, they acknowledge this eventually.) Conflict tends to resolve rather quickly, as well. You probably can expect this to take around three seasons' worth before concluding, I guess. It isn't moving very fast, but since the story revolves around making the café profitable again as much as the blooming romance, it doesn't get too one-sided.
All six main characters (guy + girls) get rather likable once fleshed out and watching their interactions and antics is satisfying. If you ignore the somewhat rough start it certainly is a decent show.
Further mentions
"Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian" got an anime adaptation. I read some of the light novels and can't bother watching it for that reason.
"SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary" is a thoughtful show about solving small mysteries, but I can't really write about it because I'm not entirely sure what its deal is. I guess they are yokai trying to pass as humans? Goes very slowly about revealing the core of its story. Gorgeous visuals.
Tumblr media
"My Wife Has No Emotion" is a story about a guy falling in love with his household appliance robot. While the story will surely reveal she's more than that the initial setup is so cringe, I stopped watching and hoping he would just see the need for getting therapy. Lots thereof. (Also, how many Japanese just start drinking by themselves once 20...?)
"Dahlia in Bloom" is yet another Isekai story with a reincarnation background. It's a bit painful to watch a spirited young girl starting to give up her own personality for a guy's ego, so I still have not watched episode 3. I'm sure it will head straight to "I'm making my own way in life" right after finishing its setup.
"A Nobody’s Way Up to an Exploration Hero" is something something dungeons in modern Japan. Guy finds ultra-rare summoning cards and instead of becoming filthy rich by selling them, he now has a cute angel and a cute demon accompanying him on quests while he lies to his childhood friend about what he does. Hmmm...

Have you read record of ragnarok?
Yeah, it's a fun, non-brainer series.
It has some interesting interpretations of the various mythologies and religions, and the gory fights can be pretty entertaining.
It's basically something you can enjoy without thinking too much.
Brunhilde is a fun, morally ambiguous and ruthless "Big Good" character.
Tumblr media
Some might claim she's "waifu material" because she's pretty, but I love her for her insanity and the MANY crazy facial expressions she makes thorough the series:

Yeah!
Mail I've sent 3 weeks ago - no reaction.
Mail I've sent today - moustache's back after 7 minutes xD
I guess it's because Tumblr's pretty much understaffed.
If I remember correctly there are around 400 employees, while other social media platforms have thousands of them.

Who do you think is the best waifu in all of fromsoftware games?
I must ruefully admit, that I haven't played any of the games until now. But based on the playthroughs, fanart, parodies (like Dork Souls 1 2 3) and memes I've seen, then my favourite Fromsoftware waifus are the Fire Keeper from Dark Souls 3 (Art by @sciamano240)
Tumblr media
And Lady Maria from Bloodborne (Art also by Siamano240)

My opinion on catgirls is that they can't be uwu perfect waifus or whatever cause then that's just a boring normal anime girl with a different/extra pair of ears. Catgirls need to embody the feline trinity of cute, graceful, and chaotic dumbass. She needs to do blatantly ungraceful things like demonicly contort her face to yawn or bite you when she wants attention or destroy your property. She needs to be a girlboss AND a failwife at the same time. She's not a genuine catgirl unless she inconveniences you at least once a day but you love her too much to stay mad at her for too long.
Plus there's too much untapped potential. Imagine if your cat could speak, was just as big as you, and had thumbs. That's too much potential to reduce to "what if she wore a maid outfit and said 'nyah'?" You gotta commit.

@tvstarkuma asked:
11. Are there some things you dislike about how the show/series/etc. portray the character you have picked up? If so, what?
canon questionnaire.
There’s not a lot I dislike about Naoto in anime adaptation since she was my first female fictional crush & I think that anime version portrays her as more capable and less 100 % reliant on Yu Narukami. Since the adaptation couldn’t focus on specific SLs too much on larger basis most of her social development is on Kanji and Rise since she is seen in the background by talking with them and she isn’t as quiet or shy or less temperamental on main as in the game.
The main gripes I have with the game is that because the game doesn’t highlight one of her biggest weaknesses some ppl tend to see her as shy perfect 100 % calm waifu. I assure you she’s NOT pristine perfect and she canonically calls out IT in a harsh way in all adaptations. Her temperament what can go from 0 to 100 if you’re harsh enough, reluctance to have empathy for the other party immediately and inability to read the mood immediately would be a turn-off to a lot of these people.
I also think that the adaptations think that she can be bossed around without any consequences or for that fanservice/sexualization. I have always hated that, especially when directed towards female characters, and it feels BS to direct towards one of the crossdressing gals just for them anime troupes/whichever reason decided at ATLUS’ team. It’s why I took liberties in Naoto being angry after the School Festival & how that affects her mental process on being comfortable with not 100 % masculine clothes and how she should deal with moments like that later.
It makes sense that they didn’t unpack that since it would’ve broken the pacing of the story & the games probably assumed that you’re not talking to Naoto immediately or anyone from IT girls, but from a writing standpoint it makes no sense that a girl as petty and hurt/humiliated as Naoto wouldn’t say something or explode like a time bomb at the “culprits”. From a writing standpoint wonky details like that annoy me too much.

So I have done nothing but play Like a Dragon Gaiden for the last…16 hours.
And here are my thoughts so far.
SEMI-SPOILERS AHEAD. I’m currently somewhere in chapter 2 out of I do not know how many and I do not know how RGG managed to crank this out in six months.
I just got to point of unlocking sub-stories for a frame of reference of how far I am in.
Yes, I heard this was supposed to be DLC (for what I assume was Yakuza 7 seeing as the story starts in Yokohama and the story crosses over with it for a mere moment), but eventually turned it into an entire two-part game.
I personally have nothing to be impressed about it. This is a standard game in the Yakuza/LAD series. You do not have to impress or disappoint me. Yakuza 6 already was the worst disappointment to the series alongside Kiwami 2, so the bar was low for this.
Okay, the graphics have impressed me a bit.
Tumblr media
The fucking car graphics went so hard in that opening scene.
I will say the fighting mechanics have improved and it seems that either this DLC was supposed to be the groundwork for Lost Judgement’s combat or the other way around, the main mechanic of switching between two different fighting style where one is quick and used to get rid of a lot of enemies and the other is used to take on single enemies is nothing new.
The spy mechanics are a bit clunky to pull off because I always have difficulty doing so in the way I want to use them because another new thing I noticed is that the AI for the fighting is somewhat more competent (I’m playing on normal) and will dogpile you given the opportunity. They also like to spam the block button thank god they gave Joryu a block breaker early on. (This is my first major nitpick)
I have ran into a few bugs, just some small clips and weird physics, but nothing like 6 or Kiwami 2 had where dead men jettisoned into space which is good.
And then I got to this part and I felt unsettled.
Tumblr media
Like…why? For reasons of game mechanics just why. I’m 100% certain they managed to sneak a porn star into one of these scenarios. Just like how they used porn stars as VAs for the cabaret girls in Yakuza 0.
But then Kiryu says this
Tumblr media
Personally I think Joryu is pulling a reverse 4th wall break and trying to get with real life waifus instead of those fake ones. This means Joryu is fully sentient of the world he is in is not real.
I do want to gloat right now I am currently in the 0.4% of the game’s population who has both cabaret achievements.
Also HOW CAN RYUJI AND MINE DIE ON SCREEN BUT IT HAS BEEN THIRTY ONE YEARS SINCE MAJIMA ENCOUNTERED THIS OLD WOMAN AND SHE HAD YET TO KICK THE BUCKET
Tumblr media
I swear she is immortal.
The biggest major complaint I have right know is why do power ups have to be spent using both money AND the special points from the Akame missions? Why not just ONE?!
I know for some reason Joryu literally punches dudes for money in this game but tacking the Akame points on as a necessity to do side content is…unlike RGG. Side content is side content for a reason. The completion list was not a shock or a groan for me, the groan came when if I wanted to grind, then I actively had to interact with that list, which because of this some of the feats on the list are manageable and easy to obtain, or the objective is easy to manage.
I understand if you just casually do it, but so far I feel the Akame stuff should have been saved for a later chapter (you know, like how Yakuza 0 did it?) so the real story could settle in and get players invested?
Spoilers Ryuji is not alive he is very dead the Ryuji in the ring is a fake he had me fooled too for a hot second.

Chugged through sommore of this before i read my email and saw i had a hold come in lmao. - House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson 3%! HOLD CAME IN ahh i’m very very excited for this one! - Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young 100%! 3🌟 You know what. It was pretty decent. It went places i wasn’t prepared for, but it left us with a tiny teaser of something that maybe, one day, mayhaps, might be A Thing. Or not. That’s fine too. UwU♡ ✔✔✔✔
Dailies - - Waifu Did mah dailies! Also, level 0/50 BP now~! AND! Tree lvl 40/50! Also! 27/43 max friendship namecards acquired! New MONTH! new weeklies! Gem thingy now level 9/10! ♡ω♡✔
#TTRPGThings - More preparations! AHH! +0 -> 2448 words for the backstory! More kitten things! They’re getting adopted and i’m all weepy about it!✔
Watching things - - Vancouver by Night: Season 1 - Episode 10/19! - 100 Club: Episode 5/??! So... behind... oh no... x_x; - New York by Night: Season 1 - Episode 8/8! SEASON TWO T O M O R R O W AHHH
Other things - Daily Diarrhea Diary - Okish. CPAP timer - ?.? hours with ?.0?disturbances. ???/9. CPAP so confused. i took the mask off last night and read the 4.8 on the screen. i know i did. This morning? There it sits, a big fat 0. i’m very confused. It’s very confused. But! It’s got night before last’s numbers at 4.7 0.2 so... ??? idk. i’m sure this will continue. i’ve got it written down and i am going to take it with me to my appointment tomorrow. So yea.
In other news! We learned so many things today. First and foremost - we cannot be removed from this apartment unless we suddenly commit a felony, start doing/dealing drugs, or other such chaos. That’s it. Once you’re in, you’re in. Whew. Secondly, Sir’s income, because He hasn’t worked for at least a year before this, will not count against rent (aka increase rent) for the first year He works, then the second year it will count halfsies, and the third year it will count fully. That’s... wild. And amazing. Thirdly, as to His Medicaid - Medicaid counts us each as single families, because we are not married, so He would lose Medicaid. But because of The Bad C currently still going on, Medicaid is not removing people. At all. Period. So He will not lose Medicaid until things change. Then it’s ACA and you get what you pay for, so, find the good stuff, and pay good for it. So all of that to say - 40 hours a week is a go. We are already planning on money uses and expenditures and Fixing The Car and Building Battle Stations and Donating Money To Places and other stuff. It’s... wild. It’s amazing. This is the most income we’ve literally ever fucking had. Whew.
Also had my Therapist appointment today, she’s so thrilled for us. But bless her, her poor shitting-the-bed computer just would not acknowledge her camera or her microphone. At all. Period. Thankfully someone in corporate or somewhere apparently got fed up with constantly getting called about The Computers Are Fuckin’ Dying Again WTF Fix It and new computers are being built to arrive Soon™️ so that’s fantastic. So essentially, we sat in Zoom, with me on cam, but us talking on the phone. It was hilarious. It was a great appointment overall.
Anyways. No perioding. Oof my head Hurts, mild abdominal pain, both ears ache, back aches, joints all just kinda ache, lungs kinda grungy. Mood was overall pretty decent, after the stress was relieved, and sobbing about kittens getting adopted, but i’m very tired so. Ya know, SSDD.
Food: A Liquid: A Pain: C Brain: B
Tomorrow: Laundry/cleaning, Reading, Dailies, #TTRPGThings, Watching.
Ever Onwards and Upwards!

Hi there, just wondering if I could put in a request for Ranpo, Chuuya, Akutagawa, Atsushi and Kunikida working with (and maybe even falling for???) someone who is super energetic and boisterous (reminiscent of bb nishinoya)?
I hope this makes sense 🥺 have a good day/night
❥ Bsd Characters working and falling for an energetic reader
Includes: Ranpo,Kunikida, Chuuya, Atsushi and Akutagawa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ᴀ/ɴ: I hope you like this 🥺❤️ I hope you have a wonderful day/night as well dear! This will be fun since I am a Nishinoya kinnie 👀
Tumblr media
Ranpo Edogawa:
Tumblr media
This adorable bby
“CAN I GET PAIRED UP WITH Y/N?!”
Chaotic duo
You guys are literally the sunshine’s of the Agency
He loves hanging out with you
You are the only person he shares his snacks with
Ranpo, yosano and you are a wonderful trio
Your missions together are always enjoyable and fun
Makes you laugh because he loves the sound of your laugh but you didn’t hear that from me
So yeah he would love working with you
It always brightens up his day
He literally subconsciously smiles when you enter
You guys like to buy candy and stroll the around the city together
Now falling for you
It will be a very fun rollercoaster for our dear detective
You can sometimes be unexpected even to him
Despite being an open book and being the most energetic and sunshine bby in the agency
Sometimes he gets surprised with stuff you do
If you hug him out of excitement then he will be normal in front of you and hug you
With a cute “YAY Y/N-CHAN HUGS!”
But after you turn your cute face away he wil be a blushing mess
And alone
He will be reconsidering his life choices and thank the heavens about blessing him with you
Let’s talk about when someone makes you sad
He will guilt trip them and ruin their self-esteem
“Are you stupid enough to make Y/N sad?”
He will give you his candy so your cute smile can be present again
Kunikida Doppo:
Tumblr media
opposites attract check ✨
Yes queen
However he finds you somewhat more tolerable than another bandage wasting machine
He does keep your hyper state at bay though
“Y/N calm down.”
“YES SIR”
Smile at him though and he will let you do anything you want
Except blowing up the city 🤡
Enjoys your company when you are calm
Doesn’t mean he doesn’t when you are energetic
He enjoys it nonetheless but likes calm conversations between you two
Likes to softly smack you on the head with his book of ideals
SOFTLY AND LIGHTLY THO
He doesn’t like people who hit innocent ladies
Smiles at you when he sees you happy
Behind your back tho
A fond soft smile
Soft kunikida yay <3
He is like your legal guardian
“Y/N GET OFF THE ROOF!”
“COME AND GET ME hehe~”
Speaking of “hehe” or giggling
He loves it
And when he falls for you, your personality would be a major reason
“She doesn’t meet 13 of my ideals...HOW DID I FALL FOR HER”
Cue you laughing and greeting him
“Oh yeah that’s why”
You balance out the serious or stern attitude of his with the bubbly and energetic attitude of yours
Ruffles your hair when he is proud
Is kunikda the type to wink?
Absolutely not
Unless ;)
Sometimes you prank our dear blonde here so yes he gets a little mischievous with you
You are buried in a lot of work?
Kunikida will pass by and wink at you
Yes that fine man is what got you the work
And that’s the only time you will find him winking at your perfect figure (yes you are perfect and if you dare oppose then I will hug you to death)
Kunikida winking pls 🤭
He will scold anyone who dares and make you sad
“WE HAVE A RULE THAT LITERALLY SAYS NEVER MAKE Y/N SAD”
They don’t but he hates seeing you down
Chuuya Nakahara:
Tumblr media
You are his child that he will beat anyone that will touch or make sad
He sees you as this precious day of sunshine in the port mafia
That literally makes everyone smile
So
He protects you with his laifu cause you are a potential waifu
But we will talk about that later on
SO
He enjoys working with you
You make the mission much lighter to deal with
But
If he is annoyed and can’t handle any noise around him
Then he will calmly ask you to calm down and tell you that he had a rough day before
He loves how you are understanding and nod smiling
Pets your head
“AYE AYE DONT MAKE Y/N SAD OR I WILL FUCK YOU UP”
Kouyou taught elegance for nothing 😔
He starts falling for your cute self
At a point chuuya will view your smile as a blessing
Specially if he is the one who causes it
Loves your personality and how you never fail to cheer him up
Soft smiles whenever you aren’t looking cause my man has a reputation to keep
He adores your hugs btw
“Thanks sunshine”
Yes that is his nickname for you even before getting together
You know how sometimes people run their knuckles onto someone’s head when mad?
He does that when you do something stupid
But he does it gently
When you are sad
Then all hell is let loose
At everyone but you 🥰
And Mori cause Chuuya isn’t fucked up in the mind so he can mess with that guy
Will let you hug him out
Tries and make you smile by telling you funny stories about dazai and how stupid he is
“You are my sunshine. My only sunshine.”
A line he had wrote in his diary while describing you
Yes I believe he has a diary but it will die with him
Atsushi Nakajima:
Tumblr media
He adores you
Like another bby that will protect you
You are like Kenji but more energetic
He can never say no to you
Gets beyond flustered when you hug him
Likes seeing you hyper
Watches over you in case shit goes down
He enjoys missions with you
They are so much fun :0
You guys even go around Yokohama and get whatever you want after you are done
These cutesy smiles whenever you are super excited over something
Will get you anything and everything
Will apologize on your behalf if someone gets harmed by whatever you did
Per example
You broke a vase in the blinds of being so excited for the mission
Atsu will put you behind him and apologize
The owner of the bar of course will forgive you cause
A cute innocent boy and a ball of sunshine standing in front of him
He can’t be a cruel little shit to you so he lets you go without anything
Probably gives you something as a souvenir 🤡
He will do anything so you don’t ever feel down
However if you do then he will be by your side trying to making you laugh
Comfort you
You name it
He treasures your smile dearly even before loving you romantically
But as bby fell for you
He payed attention to little things you do even more
If he isn’t working on something on the agency then he is staring at you with a smile and releases a dreamy sigh
He could be going through a shit of a day and he will be at his best when he sees you
You know how he got flustered over hugging him?
Yeah now he becomes a tomato and lays on the floor fanboying
Simp
Whenever you greet him then he will blush, rub the back of his neck and waves shyly
His crush on you is so obvious though
Y/N RELEASE THE BOY FROM THE HELL OF BEING OBLIVIOUS TO YOUR FEELINGS AND TELL HIM YOU LOVE HIM
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke:
Tumblr media
It’s heaven and hell for him hen he works with you
You are a great duo
But that’s not the actual heaven part
So what’s good about it is that he finds your presence sort of comforting
But GOODNESS IF YOU ARENT SO NOISY
He can’t handle it
Literally like tsukki to yams
“HEY AKUTAGAWA”
“Y/N shut up”
“No :D”
Little glares when you are too loud
He doesn’t really care about anyone around him
But
It slightly bothers him when you are down
He is so used to your bubbly and energetic attitude so to see something opposite to that is
Annoying in a sense or another
Flicks your forehead
“Cheer up idiot, it’s weird when you are sad”
How considerate wow
And falling for you would be something that surprised him
Aside from Higuchi trying to kill you
Aku started to savor your energetic attitude or aura
Slowly liked it
He even smiles a really really smol smile when you are looking at something
And like YOU ARE REALLYYYYY EXCITED
Pats you on the shoulder when proud
Yes he is copying “DAZAiIIIiiiiIi-sAaAaAAaaN”
Also now he can’t say no to you
“AKUTAGAWA I WANT CHOCOLATE”
“No”
Keep jumping around while smiling and saying please
And akutagawa will go “tch”
And let you get whatever you want
Oh yeah now that he likes you
Anyone that makes you sad loses an arm 😽

Why I don’t like the Raiden Shogun
INAZUMA GENSHIN IMPACT 2.1 SPOILERS
Don’t read if you like her or you wanna argue because I’m not here for it. I honestly think she is a very flawed archon due to the writers’ incompetence.
Okay, this is just me venting and expressing my frustrations and disdain for her character and what the writers did to her.
I hate Ei and I don’t care what you think. It doesn’t matter that she is not directly responsible because it is her malfunctioning puppet and being deceived by the Fatui. The point is she was indirectly RESPONSIBLE for the suffering done to Inazuma’s inhabitants.
Also, I hate that Ei was AWARE of it but chose to be a fucking NEET in her own room? And I hate her story was just going on a date with her instead of actually showing her Seirai Island, Tatarasuna, the Sakura Cleansing, and all the DAMAGE caused due to her absence. “She was absent to give Inazuma eternal life” well, clearly no one in Inazuma felt that. All the time she spent cooped up in her room had no impact whatsoever.
I dont give a fuck you ended up liking Dango Milk. I wanted YOU TO SEE WHAT YOUR TYRANNY HAS DONE and ATONE FOR IT. Instead, Mihoyo just reduced her to an archon who cant freaking cook and has a booba sword animation.
She deserves to feel shame and guilt. We should see her actively work to winning the trust and love of those she hurt. We don’t get that. Instead, people just fucking simped for her as she appeared.
I am massively disappointed that her story quest had no depth. You want a good written female character? Yoimiya. and the bar is so low considering that hers is like the only story quest in this trash heap of a patch that actually centred on Yoimiya’s character and the people she made an impact on. We actually learn about Yoimiya’s friends, the village she grew up in, the importance of fireworks. It was lore-packed and I lived for it. It wasnt a “date your waifu x.0″. Yoimiya is a great character and I used my guaranteed pity for her.
For Ayaka, I guess she gets a pass because Traveler was her first outsider friend. I did feel like I wish we learned about Ayaka’s leadership, but it wasn’t too bad unlike freaking Raiden’s which absolutely Made No Sense on WHY we are touring the city with her.
I would have pulled for Raiden if she was actually a good character in the story, but no, I don’t like what Mihoyo did to her. The Raiden Shogun is a badly written character and that includes Ei. If you simp her then I’m not here to argue.

Let's rate some orcs
Because I love orcs and have a number of Feelings about them and they tend to be portrayed wildly different across franchises. These are going to be franchises I'm more familiar with. Hopefully, we can find some orcs that will rank high.
My ratings will take into consideration visual appeal and variety. How big of an OOF factor is readily apparent will be taken into acount.
Tumblr media
Anime (in general): 0/10
I'm just giving a blanket statement for the vast majority of orcs in anime. They tend to have super generic designs, very copy-paste, and... Like... They seem to be mostly used for terrible porn because... Apparently there are never any female orcs. It's gross. (These creators are COWARDS! Give me a big, green, beefy orc girlfriend! She can be my waifu!)
Tumblr media
Kemono Michi: 3/10
Still the boring and basic anime orc design and I definitely don't care for those little horns, but their personalities aren't terrible. Also, more orc wrestling, please! (Side-note, there's a webcomic called Daughter of the Lilies and the orcs in that comic have horned eyebrow ridges that I think work very well for the design! It's been a while since I've checked up on it, but I really enjoyed what I have read.)
Tumblr media
Neverwinter Nights: 5/10
I actually think the in-game sprites are pretty cute?? Not too much to say other than that. (If I was ranking half-orcs though, Daelan Red Tiger would be a 10/10, would definitely smooch. Xanos is fairly smoochable too, but one would probably have a slap slap kiss kiss romance with him.) The NWN games were based on D&D 3rd edition so orcs don't tend to be more than a basic bad guy.
Tumblr media
Rankin-Bass's Return of the King: 6/10
While having a general look to them, it's not just a copy-paste orc horde and I appreciate that. Also, I don't know if you've heard Where There's a Whip, There's a Way, but these orcs know how to belt out a pretty good marching tune! I didn't remember it being that good when I watched it as a kid! However, these are also the same designs used for goblins in their take on the Hobbit, so... Who knows?? Kinda reflects how goblins and orcs are basically interchangeable in the actual book. Oops!
Tumblr media
Bright: 3/10
This movie gave me a lot of Feelings and one of the only good ones is that I like the way the orcs look. However, I've given them such a low rating because the writing and world-building surrounding them is just Not Good. (Maybe, if you're going to heavily code your orcs as Black people and then use themes of racism and stereotyping, maybe give more than one of the 5 orcs not implicitly tied to the gangbanger lifestyle more than 3 seconds of screentime?! As I said, this movie gave me Feelings.)
Tumblr media
Peter Jackson LotR: 4/10
A good variety of looks in these orcs with a unifying theme. Not a whole lot of personality to them besides EVIL though. (And, well, we can't forget that it was LotR pioneered the modern image for orcs--Tolkien didn't invent them--and just how he described them in a letter to someone else. Man definitely wasn't perfect.)
Tumblr media
D&D: 4/10 (however, I will rate Wildemount orcs at a 10/10)
These orcs have... Been through a lot and have really changed over the years. (Language describing half-orcs in 2e is Yikes.) They only took the -2 Intelligence modifier away only as recently as Eberron and Wildemount strips away the explicit connection to Gruumsh and giving orcs more personal agency. Wildemount really does step it up! I do think the art for orcs in more the more recent 5e sourcebooks look a lot better and I think the official Nolzur orc minis do look pretty good.
Tumblr media
Warhammer: 6/10
There's a ton of lore and I don't really know a whole lot of it. However, I do have some fondness for the orkz. Oh, they're so dumb, but that's also why their powers work--because they don't know any better. There is a certain audaciousness to them I rather like. As for their visuals, there's a lot of variety in these orkz. While they're not so smoochable, they are fun to look at.
Tumblr media
World of Warcraft in-game: 5/10
Pretty sure WoW really kicked off the switch from pig-faced orcs to big, beefy, green people and I absolutely don't begrudge that. In the game itself, I can't say much. The difference between male and female orcs is really sad though. Maybe I want to see more female orcs that look like they could bench me with a single arm rather that "sexy woman with an hourglass shape, but green and a weird haircut".
And, because I feel like the vibe is different enough, here's a separate rating for~
World of Warcraft, movie/cinematics: 8/10
They really said "monster lovers, we got you" then Rihanna-winked. Very smoochable. We also get to see orcs across a moral spectrum, which is very nice. The difference between male and female orcs isn't quite as bad as the games as male orcs don't look so cartoonishly brutish and female orcs look bulkier. (Draka looks very nice.)

All joking aside, would you three rate all gym leaders' (plus Leon, Piers, Opal, and Sonia) appearances on a scale of 0-10? The kids of course don't have to be judged on attractiveness 😂
Milo:
7.5/10 very cute and very buff 😘
mm...think I agree with that. 7/10
I'll put him at a 7 too. He's cute, but not exactly my type of cute.
Nessa:
10/10 best waifu 😘 I'm kidding. Still a 10 but because she really is so stinking pretty!
9/10 shes pretty
Also a 9.5. She really is certified pretty, lol.
Kabu:
Oooh, the dilf of the league~ 8/10
not my type 6/10
6.5/10. He was quite handsome when he was younger and still is. But the age difference is a little...
Bea:
She's cute when she smiles 😂 6/10 on the cute kid scale
seems okay. 6.5/10
I'm with you two, 6/10.
Allister:
10/10 a very adorable shy bean! 🥰

7.5/10, he's hard to resist, as much as he would like you too.
Opal:

Bede:
Eh he's not completely rotten so 5/10
5/10 for the same reason
6/10 if only because he's trying to make things up with Hop.
Gordie:
9/10! I feel like in a few years he'll be coming for my status as most handsome gym leader and I for one look forward to the sexual tension! 😘
stop feedin the fanart! 8.5/10 he's not bad
Hm... I think I'll go with 8/10. He's got the looks, but he hasn't quite got the confidence yet.
Melony:
10/10 absolutely gorgeous mama! 😘
8/10 shes not bad
8/10 as well. Even with her being older, time has been kind to her.

He's blushing again 🤣
Marnie:

Aaww you do care!! 🥰🧡🥰
Leon:
11/10 step on me, Daddy 😘
Never. Say. That. Again.
10/10 your handsome too
Thanks Piers. I appreciate that.
Sonia:
She's cute! 8/10
Definitely cute! 9.5/10!
cute is fair. 8/10

Every episode of Camp Camp ranked: A very (non)objective list
It's well past the time of year when Season 5 of Camp Camp would've dropped. I fully understand and support it not coming out; the crew's health and safety are much more important than a comfort show.
However . . . man, would it be nice to have some comfort right now.
So I'm reliving the entire series! I've been known to share with the world a whole bunch of Spicy Hot Takes, but I've never really sat down and talked about my feelings about the show as a whole.
And what's the best way to do that? Well, just ask Jenny Nicholson: a numbered list! That is, here's the series ranked from worst episode to best, because I want to get the negativity out of the way early and focus on everything I love (and because people enjoy complaining, so let’s frontload all that).
The takes will be hot. The feelings will be intense. The post, I'm assuming, will be largely unread.
Let's do it!
Oh and duh, there are spoilers. I tried to keep it pretty chill, but you’ll want to have watched the whole show or just not care about spoilers before going forward.
Also slashes in the middle of “naughty words” are meant to prevent this from being kept out of the main tags. Who knows if it’ll work? I don’t.
60. Who Peed the Lake? (Season 4, epis/sode 3)
Tumblr media
Ah, good ol' Pi/ss Lake (or as @hopefullypessimistic84 calls it because she's funnier than any of us will ever be, “Pis/s Fe/tish Dot Com”). Terrible, one of the few I’d consider nigh unwatchable. I actually kind of love this episode for being such great shorthand for "the absolute worst one."
Who signed off on an entire episode centered around Sherlock Holmes meets a bad om/o joke? Give me names and addresses: I just want to talk.
59. Reigny Day (Season 1, episode 6)
Tumblr media
And nobody was surprised.
I'll admit I'm more willing to defend this episode than many people, but it's not . . . like, good. It seemed okay when there were only 11 other episodes to compare it to, but now that there have been so many bangers, this comes across as extremely weak.
And let’s just say the Na/zi jokes hit a lot differently in 2020 than they did in the summer of 2016.
I’m overall happy with the direction the showrunners have moved Dolph’s character in, and I can’t totally blame them for using a kind of humor that was fairly common in the pre-Trump era, but yikes, this has aged like milk. And it wasn’t even very funny at the time, so it aged like milk that was already pretty bad to begin with.
58. Squirrel Camp (Season 4, episode 10)
Tumblr media
This is a dumb one.
Not much else to say; it’s just kinda stupid and lame.
57. Fashion Victims (Season 4, episode 13)
Tumblr media
I love Sasha, but this is filler. Which isn’t in itself a bad thing -- I have a couple episodes near the top that could reasonably be called filler, and a valid argument could easily be made that “filler episodes” don’t actually exist in a show with no plot -- but as much as I adore the Flower Scouts and enjoy the handful of good moments we get in this episode . . . who cares? Does anyone really give a sh/it about anything that happens here? Does anyone get their life from this one?
I didn’t think so.
56. Foreign Exchange Campers (Season 3, episode 3)
Tumblr media
I know, I know, your Russian waifu came from this episode. Why do you think it’s so low on this list?
Okay, for real: this is . . . fine. It’s fine. It’s fine? I’m not mad at it, it just feels tonally incongruous and not very memorable beyond the fact that the fandom got really weird and kinda gross about Vera. But the episode itself? There’s some cute stuff with Neil and Nikki being jealous, but for the most part it’s a big hunk of white bread with some super mild white cheese that’s kinda soggy from sitting in a bag for too long and getting all condensation-y.
That is to say: it’s fine.
ETA: Space Kid does say “fu/ck.” I can’t decide if that’s a point in the episode’s favor or against it.
This is the last of what I’d call the “bad” episodes. Everything after this ranges from mediocre to mind-blowingly amazing. But whatever our failing tier of Camp Camp episodes is, it stops right about here.
Onto the good stuff!
55. Night of the Living Ill (Season 2 Halloween episode)
Tumblr media
I keep switching this with “Eggs Benefits,” which probably means they should be tied. But whatever, this is my list and I am in charge and I’ve finally decided, after like 5 changes, that I like this one a little bit less.
It’s a fun Romero parody with nothing I’d call bad. Really this one’s only so low on the list because I think it’s kinda icky, and looking at those green snotty faces makes me queasy. If you think this is a bad reason to put it near the bottom of the list, then make your own post.
54. Cameron Campbell Can't Handle the Truth Serum (Season 4, episode 11)
Tumblr media
I . . . don’t remember this at all. I initially had it a bit higher because I tend to love things with Campbell in them, but then I realized that nothing about this episode stuck in my brain even a little bit.
Oh, this is the “Dolph has autism” episode that made everyone either extremely happy or really mad? Okay. I guess that’s the most remarkable thing about it. Neato.
Cam, I love you, but this was just not the best use of your sleazy charm.
53. Eggs Benefits (Season 2, episode 9)
Tumblr media
This is one of those episodes with enough cute moments and good ideas to save it from being totally unmemorable, and I mostly enjoy rewatching. Platypus being a mom is a fabulous idea, and pairing the campers the way they did was mostly really interesting and fun.
The Preston-Nurf stuff takes it down several pretty significant notches, though. It’s what the kids would call problematic, and while I normally enjoy how the show doesn’t skew away from darker themes and jokes, it didn’t really fit either of their characters and just . . . isn’t fun to watch. It’s not especially funny, it’s not especially tragic, it’s just uncomfortable.
52. Camp Campbell Wants YOU! (Season 1, episode 0)
Tumblr media
Honestly, this would be a lot higher if it was a full-length episode. It’s funny.
The next 5 or so episodes fall under the “cute but not very memorable” umbrella:
51. Nikki's Last Day on Earth (Season 3, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I love the ensemble episodes, so this was always going to score higher than any of the single-character “meh” eps. I didn’t see the twist coming, though I know a lot of other fans did. Textbook example of “cute but not very memorable” -- the Platonic ideal of that concept.
50. The Candy Kingpin (Season 3, episode 9)
Tumblr media
A clever idea that plays on Max’s worst characteristics and then calls him out for them, while also giving Dolph some much-needed character development. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like it really picks up until the last third of the episode, leaving the rest just kind of sitting there.
49. Campfire Tales (Season 4, episode 13)
Tumblr media
Who doesn’t love campfire stories?
That’s all I got. They’re campfire stories.
ETA: OH SH/IT THIS ONE HAS THAT REALLY SCARY STORY! Where David’s all like . . . Slenderman’d. Fu/ck, I didn’t remember that until I was writing out my thoughts for #35 or so. That definitely elevates it, but I’m too tired to try and re-decide where this should go, so just tie it with “New Adventure!”
48. New Adventure! (Season 4, episode 4)
Tumblr media
New trio! Focusing on these 3 was a definite risk, and I think it really paid off. While the “plot” itself isn’t anything special, there are a handful of really great side gags (hi, Dirty Kevin!!!!) and it’s fun to see these three interact. They all get some nice character beats. It’s a good time.
47. Something Fishy (Season 3, episode 8)
Tumblr media
This might’ve hit me harder if I’d actually seen The Shape of Water, but the send-up works fine without having more than the seen-the-trailer level of understanding. Gwen dresses pretty, which I love; Max sucks, which I also love. What drags this one down is mostly feeling like the surreal aspects of the comedy go a bit too far into the “what the fu/ck am I looking at?” territory without really . . . making an actual joke beyond “look! Wacky!"
Why is David at the opera with a bird? Why??
46. City Survival (Season 3, episode 11)
Tumblr media
Literally do not remember a single thing about this episode except David getting mugged and being called a “homeless twi/nk.” That should probably rank it lower on the list, but David being a fluttery mother hen saves it for me -- as does the fact that it leads directly into one of my favorite episodes, and the single best story arc of the series.
Next set of episodes is what I’m going to arbitrarily call “okay! but like the good kind of okay, not the bad kind.”
45. Bonjour Bonquisha (Season 2, episode 7)
Tumblr media
Max and Sasha masterminding a scheme is really fun; their dynamic is great (though it won’t be fully realized until Season 4), and heartbroken David is so tragically cute it actually makes my heart explode out of my chest.
Also I can’t resist a good “3 kids in a trench coat” gag.
44. Anti-Social Network (Season 2, episode 2)
Tumblr media
Neil is very relatable and I don’t have much else to say about this one. It’s fun to see an episode that more heavily focuses on our nerdy science boy, and Max and Neil teaming up to save Nikki was really charming and sweet and set my Makkiel ship out to sea.
43. A Camp Camp Christmas, or Whatever (Season 2 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
Why does this episode have a musical number? It’s not good.
Okay, that was mean. This is fun and cute and Gwen wears a pretty purple sweatshirt and Space Kid gives her a present and it’s really sweet. But that musical number is an instant fast-forward for me, sorry.
42. Preston Goodplay's Good Play (Season 4, episode 7)
Tumblr media
We get some Preston character development! Awesome!
It’s done in a really trippy and surreal way that totally fits his character and heightens the drama of the episode! Awesome!
David has an apparently-tragic history of being a French mime! Not a good call!
Next tier: Some good sh/it! (Tbh, these could all be put in just about any order; they might as well be one massive tie.)
41. Cookin' Cookies (Season 2, episode 11)
Tumblr media
I love the Flower Scouts. I love Dirty Kevin. I love the idea of accidentally starting a dru/g empire. Another weird, borderline experimental one focusing on side characters, and I think it works better than “New Adventure!” because the scale of the melodrama is just so over-the-top.
The fact that this is in the bottom 20 but I have nothing but good things to say about it illustrates how dang good this show is. It’s only getting better from here, folks!
40. Romeo & Juliet II: Love Resurrected (Season 1, episode 7)
Tumblr media
Preston is a terrible playwright. This makes sense, because he’s like 11, but he’s the kind of hilariously bad I wish I’d been as a preteen, because his play is absolutely bonkers. Max fucking with David is great, Tabii vs. Bonquisha is great, Bonquisha in general is a giant amazonian goddess and I want to be swept up into her giant arms. Neil is . . . a robot, for some reason?
So much fun!
39. Camp Cool Kidz (Season 1, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I don’t love Ered’s characterization in this one, but there are a lot of wacky hijinks in this episode that I think make it really enjoyable. Max’s wide-eyed revolutionary naïveté is a fun change from his usual dour pessimism, and Nikki’s loyalty to Ered is both very gay and very charming. Plus we get to learn a bit more about how the camp operates (and fails to operate), and it’s a nice way to better establish the campsite as its own setting.
(Definitely think “Cool” should’ve been spelled with a K though. But whatever, I don’t write for the show.)
38. Scout's Dishonor (Season 1, episode 3)
Tumblr media
The birth of Neeancy! The introduction of the Flower and Wood Scouts! Neil saying “cu/nt” -- one of the first and only truly shocking uses of profanity in the entire show! ZUKO!
I don’t know if my fondness for this one is rooted mostly in nostalgia or if it was actually really fun, but I enjoyed the he/ll out of it. Not as highly-rated as some other episodes mostly because it doesn’t really do anything, character or story-wise, but not every episode needs to be a massive game-changer that drowns us in feels. Sometimes it’s enough to have a fun romp, and this is very that.
37. Ered Gets Her Cool Back (Season 3, episode 2)
Tumblr media
Awww, Ered. I have a soft spot for her, because I love the archetype of a spoiled bit/ch clearly still figuring out how to be a person and have friends. You really get the sense of her as a teenager trying to sort her shi/t out in this episode, which I would love to see more of. Her interactions with Nerris are top-tier, and I like that it’s a continuation of how her character’s been softening since Season 1 into this kind of big-sister figure.
Also, all the female campers in this show are lesbians. I do not make the rules.
36. Attack of the Nurfs (Season 4, episode 2)
Tumblr media
I feel like this is a pretty underrated episode. But then again, I feel like Nurf is a pretty underrated character, so maybe that’s just my own personal bias.
I really enjoyed all the different iterations of Nurf, and I think Blaine did a killer job giving each one its own personality and life. It’s a fun episode that plays hard with cartoon physics (a 3D printer printing people! I love it!) and has a surprisingly moving ending.
At least, that’s what I think. Most other people seem to find this one pretty forgettable. Again: make your own da/mn list. I liked it.
35. Mascot (Season 1, episode 2)
Tumblr media
This entire episode is memorable for so many things, but a few of my favorites:
David is established as kind of a di/ck.
Platypus arrives and kicks all the as/s.
Quartermaster is the best.
Nerris, Harrison, and Space Kid all get little moments to show off how cute they are.
Neil and Nikki bonding.
This:
Tumblr media
34. Quest to Sleepy Peak Peak (Season 2, episode 3)
Tumblr media
I love watching Nerris and Harrison bicker, and Neil and Nikki fit really well into their group. It reminds me of being a kid, and of playing Dungeons & Dragons (as an adult, because I’m so cool), and of summer . . . which is a really good thing for this show. There are a lot of funny one-liners, and it’s just a good dang time.
33. Quartermaster Appreciation Day (Season 2, episode 6)
Tumblr media
I don’t think this one is all that well-loved, but I thought it was funny. There are literally zero important plot or character moments, but it made me laugh a lot, and that’s all I need a Camp Camp episode to do.
I love QM, and the more we learn about him, the more confused and disturbed we end up being. What a fu/cking champion.
32. Arrival of the Torso Takers (Season 3 Halloween episode)
Tumblr media
I lowkey hated this one when it came out, because I knew the Daniel stans were going to be exhausting. And they kind of were? But looking back, it’s a great way to reintroduce this motherfu/cker. He’s a lot scarier than he was the last time around -- but also less competent, which is a great way to kick him in the proverbial ba/lls -- and while I wish it had a lot more Gwen in it, it’s a clever and creative Halloween episode.
31. Operation: Charlie Tango Foxtrot (Season 3, episode 10)
Tumblr media
Charlie . . . Tango . . . Foxtrot . . . CTF . . . OH! Capture the Flag! I never got that before. Oh, that’s neat. I love this show.
Listen, every time the writers decide to take a risk and do something bizarre and creative, I’m going to be here for it at least a little bit. An entire episode told from the POV of the Woodscouts, explaining how hard they failed in all directions? A great gag where everyone in Petrol’s story talks in grunts? The return of Jermy Fartz?! Fantastic.
30. Panicked Room (Season 4, episode 16)
Tumblr media
Listen. I’m a sucker for my trash grandpa; anything Campbell-centric is probably going to be pretty good (except #54), because he’s just one of the most consistently funny and engaging characters. Good times are had whenever this terrible man is on the screen, and giving him a romantic backstory? A tragic romantic backstory full of mistakes and emotional damage?? One where he waited 17 YEARS for the love of his life???
We have no choice but to stan.
29. Party Pooper (Season 4, episode 15)
Tumblr media
I’m so predictable. If you put Gwen in something, I will be happy. If you make an entire episode about how Gwen is under-appreciated and overworked and just trying to do her best despite the circumstances, I will dedicate my firstborn child to you.
Anyway, this episode is really sweet, and I liked the unexpected direction the writers took her relationship with her dad. He seems like a nice guy, they seem like they have a nice relationship, and . . . well, an episode about how hard it is to be an adult millennial hit pretty hard. Plus this was just a really pretty episode -- and not just because Gwen was in so much of it! Seriously, that night sky was a thing of beauty.
Also if you say a fuc/king word about Max and that godda/mn dog I will choke you out with your own intestines. Few things are more hilariously, annoyingly ironic than the fact that the entire fandom ignored and failed to appreciate Gwen . . . in the episode all about how everyone ignores and fails to appreciate Gwen.
28. Culture Day (Season 3 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
Now, would it be arrogant to point out that I had the idea for a Culture/Heritage Day back in September 2018? Yes, especially since I don’t think the writers ever read fanfiction and it has literally nothing to do with this episode. Will that stop me? He/ll no it will not! I am a creature of ego! Read my stuff!
Anyway, this is a really fun look at Neil’s background, personality, and relationships. Max looking out for him is just . . . oh my god, I cannot, I’ve written like 30 of these and my brain is starting to melt, but these two are so cute. I love arrogant Neil, and I love protective Max, and I love QM and Gwen fuc/king over the Flower Scouts to save the day. Everything about this episode is lovely.
27. Cameron Campbell the Camp Campbell Camper (Season 3, episode 7)
Tumblr media
This should not be ranked so high (even if these are all essentially tied). This is a dumb episode based on a really, really dumb premise.
But . . . I don’t know what to tell you. “Samboy Kidwell,” Max realizing he and Campbell are disturbingly similar and not liking what his future could look like, David’s “I’m not mad, I’m disappointed” face . . . this episode happens to hit all of my favorite things. It had a really good balance of heavy-handed moralizing and goofs, it was part of the most graceful lead-up into a finale the show has ever had, and I’m just all about it.
Excellent job, Samboy. Count Olaf would be proud of your disguise.
There ends the “some good sh/it” tier. We’re starting to get into the really excellent stuff now!
26. Parents' Day (Season 2, episode 12)
Tumblr media
I know. You want this to be higher. I hear you.
Honestly I’m kind of shocked it’s this high; it’s my least favorite of the season finales so far, and I had to push past a lot of prejudice to actually rank this where I think it deserves to be, as opposed to somewhere in the like mid-40s. Mostly because it gave fuel to the raging inferno of “Max has terrible parents and David should adopt him” headcanons, which I’ve detailed my problems with extensively in the past (in a post that, statistically speaking, none of you have read).
But, trying to be objective: is this episode actually any good?
Well . . . yeah, it really is.
So much work was put into giving each of the campers families that make sense with their characters and bounce absurdly well off of them, ranging from wholesome and adorable (Nerris’s family) to quietly tragic (Harrison’s parents), and they’re all designed so well; they’re fun to look at and fun to watch interact with the kids and each other. (The only exception is Dolph’s dad, who is both kinda lame and misattributes the cause of the weird Na/zi thing because it did not come from Germany, I assure you. But things with Dolph are always a little off, and I don’t really know how you would give him a backstory that actually works with the character, so they were caught between a rock and a hard place there.)
The drama of David having to choose between the man he considers his father and the camp he considers his home is really touching, and him and Gwen choosing to take a sad camper out to get pizza instead of covering for their boss’s a/ss is such a beautiful moment for both of them that I can’t really blame the fandom for losing their mind over it. Campbell’s arrest leading into the arcs of the next two seasons was great as well, and the finale left us all with this weird sense of foreboding because we didn’t know what was going to happen next; it was the only finale that actually ended on something close to a cliffhanger, while still being satisfying enough to keep us all from melting down.
Plus, it’s funny. Carl and Candy are really funny and the idea of Neil and Nikki’s parents boning is funny in a horrible way. The joke about Quartersister is funny. It’s a good episode.
Should this be higher? Maybe, but I can’t bring myself to put it above the rest of these episodes. Again: make your own list.
25. Mind Freakers (Season 1, episode 10)
Tumblr media
The episode that launched a thousand ships. Assuming those ships are all Harrison/Neil, anyway.
It’s hard to talk about these Season 1 episodes because they feel so classic. Like, what is there to say? You’ve all seen it a couple dozen times; I’ve seen it a couple dozen times. Harrison is a di/ck, Neil is possibly an even bigger di/ck, and magic may or may not be real. (Though spoilers for literally every season: yes, magic is definitely real.) It’s so much fun watching these two smug as/sholes snipe at each other in an almost literal playground hair-pulling way that could very easily be read as flirtation.
And the fandom did most certainly read it that way, at least for a little while.
24. Gwen Gets a Job (Season 2, episode 8)
Tumblr media
It’s Gwen. What, was I supposed to not put it this high?
This was the first Gwen-centric episode, and it absolutely slaps. She’s pushed to the breaking point and responds by being a cold-hearted BAMF, and it got her some pretty significant hate from fans but I don’t give a fu/ck, I loved it. We got to see her all dolled up, and then we got to see her all disheveled, and both of those looks were gorgeous. David gives her a tiny fragment of the love and validation she deserves (I don’t know if this is when gwenvid started taking off -- I think it wasn’t really until “Parents’ Day,” or even Season 3 -- but I ate that s/hit up).
Also, again: job hunting post-2008. It’s a bad time, y’all. Camp Camp gets it.
23. Follow the Leader (Season 4, episode 6)
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was kind of surprised at how high this landed, too. I guess I’m just a sucker for unlikely companionships, and these three have a great chemistry. The combination of competitiveness, sass, and reluctant admiration make their interactions a lot of fun. Their motivation of doing petty errands for Campbell for the sake of getting at the Box of Illegal Contraband is a great framework too, with high enough stakes to justify all sorts of wacky shenanigans without causing actual anxiety.
I want to see these characters forced to spend more time together. Please, RT, make that happen.
22. Escape from Camp Campbell (Season 1, episode 1)
Tumblr media
In terms of numbers, this feels so low, but considering everything from about #45 on is ranked as at least decent, this is actually a pretty high rating. There are 21 episodes I’d call better than this, but these decisions were all pretty painful.
This introduces us to everyone! The main trio, the counselors, Mr. Campbell; we get a snapshot of the major personalities running around the camp, the major points of conflict (Max vs. David, primarily), the major building blocks of future episodes, setting, and relationships . . .
Again, I don’t know how much of my love for this episode is nostalgia -- there’s a lot of squeeing at familiar faces and gags; this is the first time David gets hit by a bus!!! -- but it was a fun and funny introduction to a series that’s ended up being so important to me, and I’m so grateful this wonderful, quirky little show with its wonderful and quirky little premiere.
Of all the episodes, I really can’t look at this one objectively. It’s too important.
21. The Fun-Raiser (Season 3, episode 1)
Tumblr media
David and Gwen scheming is my ki/nk. They very rarely scheme together, but every single time their teamwork makes the dream work (or, more frequently, makes the dream fail horribly and have disastrous consequences) my soul flies out of my body and takes to the stars, where I write another 500 first chapters to gwenvid fanfics I’ll probably never finish.
This is a great follow-up to “Parents’ Day,” where we immediately see the consequences of the previous season finale and what happens when the one adult in the camp disappears. Mr. Campbell was a terrible adult, true, but at least he was smart enough not to steal QM’s hook. Like . . . whose plan was this? It was so bad. These two are hilariously incompetent sometimes -- often when their bad ideas are feeding off of each other, actually, a la this and “Space Camp Was a Hoax” -- and watching them frantically try and keep all their balls in the air is so great.
The ending is satisfying, too; a bit graphic, in keeping with a show that tends to keep the violence limited to periodic spurts of bloodshed 1-2 times a season and mostly pretty mild the rest of the time, but between Max stepping up and fixing everything while still being his shi/tty self to our dear dumba/ss counselors getting their dumb as/ses handed to them (deservedly so, if we’re being honest) . . . it’s such a great note to begin a new season on.
20. Journey to Spooky Island (Season 1, episode 5)
Tumblr media
A classic.
We get to meet our spooky boy Jasper, we get to watch the comedy trio play off each other and continue to sketch out the general contours of their friendship, and we get to see the Quartermaster with a big purple dil/do for a hand. What’s not to love?
19. The Butterfinger Effect (Season 4, episode 17)
Tumblr media
CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKES! GET YOUR CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKES HERE!
I’ve already gone into some pretty intense detail about why I think this one is actually really good and carries the theme of embracing change that everything about Season 4 was centered around, but none of y’all read that so here it is in short: this episode is super funny, almost all of the campers’ transformations work really well as extensions of their characters while still being strange and surprising, and the fact that Nurf creates all of these problems by trying to solve them is deliciously fun to watch in a karmic sort of way.
Or maybe it’s just because any Nurf-centric episode is going to rank pretty highly for me. That is also possible.
18. Space Camp Was a Hoax (Season 2, episode 10)
Tumblr media
Our camp counselors being bad people: it’s my drug of choice.
We get Space Kid tripping balls in what might be one of the funniest sequences in the show, the entire camp coming together to try and pull off the stupidest, most impossible task (and kinda maybe almost nailing it???), and once again the fun of watching Gwen and David scramble to keep from getting caught in their boss’s shit/ty lies is so great. And Lindsay’s voice acting is absolutely killer, even more so than usual.
17. Jermy Fartz (Season 2, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I get the sense this might be a somewhat controversial one.
I’ve written before about why I think this episode is a lot of fun, but it mostly boils down to two things: watching the campers try (and fail) to be nice to the most bully-able person on the entire planet, and the essential likeableness of Jermy.
No, really.
I think a lot of people were put off by Jermy’s general grossness, because . . . my god is he disgusting, but he’s also polite and good-natured, and seems totally self aware of how difficult he is to be around, without letting it make him depressed. He’s cheerful in a weirdly downbeat way that’s impossible to understand until you see him in action. He’s so matter-of-fact about his own awfulness in a way that I found entirely endearing. I don’t think I’d want him at my camp, either, but get that kid to a good dermatologist and gastroenterologist, teach him some basic hygiene and social skills, and you’ll have quite a little gentleman there.
I do however find it hilarious that apparently David got the type of tree wrong when making fun of Jermy. Not only is that a great moment for reveling in David being an as/shole, but he didn’t even have the right wood. F/ucking idiot. I love him so much.
These last ones are my favorites! (Well, duh, that’s how this whole ranking thing works.) Maybe not perfect, but just really good and with limitless rewatch value.
16. St. Campbell's Day (Season 4 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
They Grinch’d Camp Camp. Those brilliant bast/ards, they really pulled it off.
Ignoring the fact that David is truly frightening-looking for most of the episode, this is a great bookend to Season 4, following up on the theme established in the first episode about how David is a flawed and selfish human being despite trying his best not to be.
This is another one I was surprised to find so high on the list, but the more I thought about it the more I realizes how good it is. David being a jerk is always one of my favorite storylines, and the fact that the trouble comes from him trusting Mr. Campbell too little instead of too much is a nice twist on the usual formula. Gwen coming to help him out despite a blistering hangover gave me aggressive shipping feels, yes, obviously.
Between a lot of really funny little gags like QM’s failed satanic ritual and the genuinely touching moral about the importance of spending time with the people you love, it’s just a really lovely episode that gets just the right amount of maudlin for the holiday season.
15. Jasper Dies at the End (Season 2, episode 5)
Tumblr media
I kept switching this and “Dial M for Jasper”; it was a really difficult decision to make, figuring out where these two belonged. I think in the end, while the John Dies at the End reference was very, very good, this one loses me a little bit by being told from David’s perspective. Now, normally the more David is in an episode the more I’ll be likely to love it (see my #1 for proof of that), but his blinders when it comes to the camp and Mr. Campbell result in a really funny story, but one without the same emotional heft as hearing about what happened from Jasper’s point of view.
That doesn’t mean it’s not perfect for what it needs to be: each Jasper episode builds on the previous ones, and having the same intensity of “Dial M for Jasper,” where we learn how he died and how his relationship with David fell apart, would be weird and heavy at this point. In Season 1 we just found out he’s a ghost (and eagle-eyed viewers realized he’d been a camper with David); in Season 2 we find out how David views their friendship and time at camp; and in Season 3 we get Jasper’s perspective. It’s an absolutely wonderful raising of the stakes (for lack of a better term), but the one that packs more of an emotional punch is going to rank a bit higher than the one that’s mostly just for laughs.
That being said: there are plenty of laughs in this one. Everyone -- Griffin, Miles, Travis, the animators -- nailed this one, and it gets funnier every time I watch it.
14. Camporee (Season 1, episode 11)
Tumblr media
AKA the episode where Forest realized she was in love with Gwen.
What a great idea for an episode, seriously. Every coming-of-age story has a talent show or a competition or a big game -- something where the kiddos can show off their improved skills and teamwork to beat their bullies or whatever. And this show has both kinds of bullies: the popular girly girls and the violent muscleheads. What a great moment to pull everyone together and show how friendship can help us accomplish anything!
Except . . . of course that’s not what happens. Of course they’re absolute garbage, and of course teamwork isn’t the answer. Gwen is the perfect foil for David here, being the anti-teamwork, anti-Camp-Campbell adult who can perfectly and effortlessly undermine David’s relentless optimism. David wants so badly for his campers to live in the same coming-of-age summer movie he did as a child, and their staunch refusal to do that leads to a really heartbreaking closer to the episode, as well as lead into the next one. Everything about this, from the challenges to the setup to Gwen shouting “we are winning this FUC/KING trophy!” is just gold.
13. David Gets Hard (Season 1, episode 9)
Tumblr media
We have David. We have Nurf. We have Gwen. We have Max trying to be helpful in the shi/ttiest way possible.
We have all the makings of a da/mn good episode. And they deliver. Not a very emotionally intense or moving one, but so, so funny.
12. Dial M for Jasper (Season 3, episode 5)
Tumblr media
This isn’t the fate any of us expected for Jasper, and it’s not the fate of a lot of people wanted. But godda/mn it, it worked. The constant bait-and-switch the episode keeps playing with, where you keep waiting for something really dramatic and tragic to happen . . . and then the reality is that Jasper died because Mr. Campbell was stupid and careless, and it was all just a horribly sad accident.
It’s anticlimactic, but in a way that suits the series, both as a comedic counterpoint to all the hype throughout the episode and as a way to establish that Cameron Campbell is a bad man first and foremost through selfishness and laziness, not Daniel-esque sinister evil. Jasper’s death was totally avoidable and totally Campbell’s fault, and while that’s sad, it also adds a weird sort of lightness to the episode. David didn’t do something terrible to kill his best friend, Jasper didn’t kill himself, and without having actively chosen to murder a child (well, not this time), the door remains open for fans accepting Campbell’s later pseudo-redemption. It was just an accident, and Jasper was “haunting” David to tell him that he was sorry for how their friendship ended. That’s really sweet, actually.
I think it’s the best way this reveal could’ve gone, and I’m so impressed with how they pulled it all off.
11. Into Town (Season 1, episode 8)
Tumblr media
This might actually be the only flawless episode in the entire show. I mean, I call a lot of them flawless, and I mean that on an emotional level -- “I love this so much I cannot see anything wrong with it” -- but this one is a masterpiece of storytelling. All the technical jumbo I’m bad at, like planting and payoff and tension and all of that, is just perfect.
I feel like this is the kind of claim that needs to be backed up with a long-as/s essay full of citations and video clips and references to, like, Joseph Campbell or something, but this is my 49th entry in the list so I am not going to be doing that. Besides, I don’t think my English degree qualifies me to critique film/animation; I don’t even entirely know half the terms I’ve used to compliment this episode. Someone else please explain why this is such a good one.
10. The Quarter-Moon Convergence (Season 4, episode 5)
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned in other entries that the weird, surreal humor sometimes doesn’t work; it feels too much like being odd for its own sake, and sometimes gets so distracted in being surreal that it forgets to include anything funny or meaningful.
This . . . is not one of those.
Putting Harrison and QM together is a stroke of genius; the two of them are literally the most magical beings in the entire show, and using them as the conveyance for this great Lovecraftian horror-comedy was such a good idea. I don’t know if we’ll ever see these two interact in another episode -- honestly, this felt a bit like lightning in a bottle, and I have a hard time imagining what could possibly bring them together again -- but if this is the only episode we get, it is such a fantastic one.
Harrison makes a really good everyman, despite his powers; he’s just the right amount of confident and insecure to pull off that wide-eyed apprentice to QM’s grizzled wise mentor. (The fact that QM is objectively a terrible mentor is beside the point.) I still don’t entirely know what the two of them accomplished, but it feels baffling and momentous, with the perfect amount of gravity to make things extremely tense all the way through to the end.
Also, I guess God is an octopus? That’s kinda cool. I like octopuses.
9. Camp Corp. (Season 3, episode 12)
Tumblr media
Another unpopular opinion? Oh ho ho, I am so contrary! I am Not Like Other Fans! I am the Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, refusing to have the same opinions of all you prepz.
I know this wasn’t the most well-loved episode, but I think it did a really great job tying together story threads woven throughout Season 3: Max’s selfishness leading to him hurting other people, his growing realization that he cares about his friends and the camp itself, the parallels between him and Mr. Campbell (and the fact that they both get this redemption moment in the finale).
This is the most Max-centric season, focusing on his flaws and character growth, and they pulled it off in a really organic way that felt faithful to his character, touching without being too maudlin. The fact that his feelings about the camp are echoed in Gwen, Neil and Nikki, the other campers, and even Mr. Campbell drives home how important the camp -- and David -- are to this strange little family.
Each season, Max reluctantly becomes a better person, without changing the fundamental core of who he is. That’s a really hard putt for the writers and Michael, and I’m blown away every finale by how they so consistently nail it.
8. Time Crapsules (Season 4, episode 18)
Tumblr media
Gwen-centric? Check.
Max learning how to be a better person while still being the bratty kid we know and love? Check.
Looks at one of the most under-appreciated character dynamics in the entire show (i.e., Max and Gwen)? Checkity check-check-check.
I don’t really have much to say about this one, which I should: it was considered a pretty serious letdown to a lot of fans, and I’m not sure how to explain why I loved it so much.
Comparing Max from “The Order of the Sparrow” to Max from this episode is wild. It’s not like 2 different characters: they’re still very obviously the same cynical, self-absorbed 10-year-old trying to survive summer camp. But he’s become a more considerate friend and decent version of that kid, and it’s great to watch. The moment where he and Gwen go too far and immediately regret snapping at each other is still painful (on my god, the VAs in this show, they’re so talented), Nikki and Neil both get nice subplots about how they’re also growing up, and the ending is fuc/king hilarious, perfectly breaking the tension from Campbell’s speech, which is both beautifully done and important to hear, especially if you’re in a period of uncomfortable transition (like, say, in your late 20s, or living through about 5 different national and global catastrophes).
And okay, I found that speech on the wiki for this episode and it made me deeply emotional, so here:
Here's the thing: you've got to take your failures and make something out of them. Take Camp Campbell for instance: a lot of poor decisions went into making this place what it is today. Sure, somewhere along the line it maybe strayed from its path, not living up to the camp it wanted to be. At some point, the camp realized that the camp would never reach the end of its path until it was ready or until it gave up. So, if the camp wanted to keep embezzling money and dealing with foreign powers, so be it! But, at some point, it didn't anymore. I never saw this coming, but I'm starting to think this camp is the best it's ever been.
If this is the last episode of Camp Camp we ever get -- and for at least a little while, it looks like it’s going to be -- I can’t think of a sweeter, funnier, and more lovely bittersweet note for this show to go out on.
7. The Lake Lilac Summer Social (Season 3, episode 6)
Tumblr media
And again: No one was surprised.
This is the longest non-finale episode of the show, and it uses that time perfectly. Rather than having some big emotional moments and character arcs -- which are great, don’t get me wrong -- the writers use the extended time to build a series of shenanigans as complicated as Gwen’s matchmaking web, and watching her try to set up a series of dominos (with David, for once, being the responsible, level-headed one) is almost as satisfying as the catastrophic results.
Neil and Snake steal this episode, even from someone as in love with Gwen as I am, and for an episode that’s largely about making fun of shippers, there hasn’t been one that launched nearly as many ships as this. Neil/Snake? Tabii/Erin? Max/Nikki? GWENVID?! It’s all here, and I am here for it.
It was also fun to get a traditional episode setup in a very non-traditional show. I assume this means the beach and/or hot springs episode is forthcoming. (No, Pis/s Lake doesn’t count. Obviously it doesn’t count.)
6. Keep the Change (Season 4, episode 1)
Tumblr media
Again, this is an episode I’ve said a lot about in the past -- and I was pretty uncharitable toward Season 3, which in retrospect was very unse/xy of me -- but I stand by a lot of my opinions then: this is a fu/cking great episode.
David is an as/shole, Max is an as/shole, Campbell is an as/shole. No one escapes the as/sholery. David schemes, Max catches him in the scheme, Campbell gets drunk and kind of gay . . . I’m 54 entries into this list and I don’t have much to say anymore: it’s just really good and fun and I love it.
5. Camp Loser Says What? (Season 4, episode 9)
Tumblr media
This is another one I kind of hated when it came out, and again for fandom-related and personal-grudge reasons.
Fu/cking Daniel. That motherfu/cker. He shows up for 12 minutes and Tumblr bursts into flames. Every single time.
However, it’s really hard not to love this one. Daniel-as-Trump is a clever but subtle -- I mean, for this show’s definition of subtle -- allegory, and it’s amazing how much this slimy freak and the Woodscouts slot into it. David is a bise/xual disaster with the absolute worst taste in men, Dirty Kevin and Daniel are onscreen together for all of 2.5 seconds and the kevdan shippers lost their minds, and Xemug looks like Megamind for some weird reason.
My only minor complaint is that the ending is a bit anticlimactic, but it plays on Daniel’s stupidity and the value of teamwork, so it’s a very small nitpick in an episode that mostly works like gangbusters.
4. Cult Camp (Season 2, episode 1)
Tumblr media
Duh. There’s a really good song and we’re introduced to a charismatic, sinister, and totally dumba/ss villain. What’s not to like?
I don’t think I even need to say anything about this episode. Season 2 started off the summer by throwing a lit firecracker directly at the viewer’s face, and ignoring the fact that we as a fandom proceeded to eat each other, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the episode’s wild energy.
And dude, that song. Fabulous. Fu/ck Daniel, but thank god he’s around to be such a prickly little pri/ck.
Now for the top 3: Literally perfect, wouldn’t change a single solitary thing.
3. After Hours (Season 4, episode 8)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure anyone loved this episode as much as me. But this is my list, and I will put this up at the top if I want to and you cannot stop me.
It’s much easier in a lot of ways to talk about the episodes I hated than the ones I love this much. What do I say besides “literally everything about this fills me with joy and my life is better because it exists”? I don’t know. The counselors are my favorite characters, and between Gwen and QM having the weirdest bonding experience, Gwen getting to meet up with people who care about her silly fanfiction, Mr. Campbell being the trash grandpa of my dreams, David getting in way over his head . . . it’s the episode I always wanted, and they made it work so well.
Also, I just discovered that “Gwen Isn’t Your Mother So Stop Asking Her to Rinse Your Dishes” is an actual song and I am overwhelmed with delight. Here, I’m embedding it as well as linking because it’s so good:
youtube
God. This show. What the fu/ck even is up with this amazing, weird-as/s show.
2. The Order of the Sparrow (Season 1, episode 12)
Tumblr media
Duh.
The entire first season is a great time (except “Reigny Day”), but it’s a pretty low-stakes kind of great time. There isn’t much in terms of emotional depth until the very end of “Camporee,” despite some hints at darker themes in one-off jokes and quick asides, so this episode comes a bit out of left field, tonally speaking.
But that’s not a bug, it’s a feature; if the show had been this overtly emotional from the outset, this finale wouldn’t hit as hard, and the rest of the season wouldn’t be as funny.
This manages to serve as a capstone to the conflict of the first season, building on episodes like “Into Town” and “Escape from Camp Campbell” in a way that feels totally natural for both David and Max’s characters while revealing new sides of them. It works because it’s so unexpected, but it doesn’t come across as incongruous with their personalities. It’s the first and only time David swears in all 4 seasons, and that line -- I don’t even need to say it, you know exactly what I’m talking about -- still gives me chills.
Also, Gwen sings the camp theme song. Impossible not to cherish.
1. The Forest (Season 4, episode 12)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure if this one is a surprise or not. It might be the obvious first place, or it might be a bit of an oddball for some people.
I had a really hard time choosing between this and “The Order of the Sparrow”; I switched their places half a dozen times, and the difference in quality between the two is razor-thin. I think part of that is because it accomplishes a lot of what “Order of the Sparrow” does: puts David in a situation where he’s pushed to his absolute emotional and physical capacity, crushes every shred of hope he has left, and sees what he’s actually made of when you strip everything away. It’s much more dramatic this time around, but it’s the same basic concept.
And just like in the Season 1 finale, what we see is a man who’s determined to do good even when he isn’t rewarded for it, even when he’s actively punished for it. Who wants to love nature, and life, and make the world a better place -- despite his faults, his selfishness and thoughtlessness and anger, David proves that he is fundamentally kind. He’s not nearly as deludedly optimistic as he seems; he just refuses to stop trying.
Because somebody fuc/king has to.
I’ll admit, some of what puts this one in first place is that I’m a sucker for whump, and David really goes through the ringer. However, I also think it’s important to acknowledge the risk Joe Nicolosi took with writing this episode: it’s all centered around a single character, it’s darker and more viscerally bloody than any other episode in the show’s history, the art is focused on these grand sweeping backgrounds that must’ve taken forever to paint, and there’s very little talking in a show that runs 99% on clever dialogue. This could have so easily backfired -- and for some fans it did -- but it was brave and beautiful and breathtaking.
I’ve actually only watched this in full once. It’s really hard to get through; it’s just so intense and even disturbing. But if there’s one episode I'll remember for the rest of my life, even when I’m 80 years old and haven’t seen the show in years, it’ll be “The Forest.”
It’s funny how such a sharp departure from the format and style of the rest of the show somehow manages to perfectly capture the heart of it. Talk about a fuc/king achievement.
So what have we learned?
I don’t entirely know what the purpose of this whole exercise was. I think it was mostly to get myself a nice Camp Camp fix that came from something other than slogging through 20 different fanfic WIPs, and to remind myself of what a strange and fun ride the last 4 summers have been.
I also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what Camp Camp means to me. This show has been hugely important to me on a personal level: I met two of my best friends through this fandom, and I’ve never been more connected to a community or readers than I have with CC. I know I bi/tch about this fandom a lot, but it’s a big extended internet family, and I’m so happy to be a part of it. Going through all these episodes, getting the chance to ramble about the things I liked and the things I didn’t, was a great way to reconnect with a series and community that I love.
So . . . what have we learned?
1. Season 4 was all over the place.
Some of this has to be due to the sheer volume of episodes, but when I sat down and organized everything into tiers:
Tumblr media
There isn’t a single category Season 4 doesn’t have at least one episode in. I was surprised to see how high a lot of them ended up; it really was the best and worst of the show so far.
For the fun of it, I decided to give a number to each placement -- 60 points for the #1 episode, 59 for #2, etc. -- and see how each season broke down. Because that’s that kind of thing I think is worthwhile, apparently. And . . .
2. Seasons 1 and 4 are really good, actually.
Tumblr media
Well, I don’t think anyone’s surprised to see how well Season 1 stacked up; it was amazing. But I was surprised to see how much I ended up enjoying Seasons 3 and 4, when if you’d asked me before this little project, I would’ve said they were the most underwhelming. Maybe I messed up the numbers a bit -- I’m no mathmagician -- but not only are they all really close, but Season 4 was one of my favorites.
3. This entire show is really good, actually.
One thing that really struck me when I put it all together visually is how most of the episodes sit in the “good,” “really good,” or “amazing” categories. The amount of episodes that are memorable, fun, and/or emotionally resonant is crazy. I don’t now how many other tiny cult-hit web series can say the same, honestly, and all of the writers, animators, directors/producers/other people whose jobs I don’t really understand, and voice actors should be commended for their outstanding talent and hard work.
4. Thank you, Camp Camp.
It was a real pleasure to relive all of these episodes again and think about what they meant to me. It won’t be the last time I sit down and watch this show -- and it certainly won’t be the end of my being a shrieking fangirl over it -- but with this break, where we have to get through a blazing, extremely difficult summer without a new season to fawn over, it’s nice to stop and appreciate what a precious gem of a show this is.
I hope everyone involved with Rooster Teeth is taking a much-deserved rest and prioritizing their health and well-being. Thank you for creating something truly special, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Mirko x Reader
Foreword
This story is a fanfic of Boku no Hero Academia and the rabbit hero Mirko, also known as Rumi Usagiyama.
I chose to write it in first person, mostly because I want to add something to my life which I cannot get besides in my fantasy. I hope you enjoy reading this and do not find it cringe.
The following part of this, is just a bit backstory on me/the reader that will end up meeting Mirko. If you don’t care about the backstory (since it is pretty long) you can just skip it. Since my childhood, I always felt like that one kid in school that was always alone, even if they wanted to reach out for people. I did have a few friends that I hung out with at and after school. We usually played soccer whenever we had a lunchbreak or when we could do anything but assignments. I had a lot of fun (or so I thought), and when I had the time I would ask one of my “friends” if they wanted to play/hang out after school and most of the time they said yes. I preferred being at their house than at mine. I always felt awkward being home with a friend. Not that my mom or siblings were embarrassing in any way. I just didn’t have as many things as the friends I hung out with had. When we got to their house, we either played soccer in their backyard or played video games. Be it Call of Duty, Mario Kart or Sims. I was down for anything, even if I had to watch them play. I enjoyed my time being there. But as much fun as it seemed, I did not expect this to happen. I was persuaded into going to a soccer tournament since they lacked a few players, especially in the defense. I didn’t really have any high hopes for the tournament because I knew I would be lopped with the bad team and we lost 9 out of 10 games, if we were lucky  that is. As I expected, we got destroyed in the first match with a whopping score of 0-23. The second game wasn’t as bad, but still quite a bit, since we lost that with a score of 0-15. There was a third game, but I am unsure if there was a fourth game. Well, that doesn’t really matter in the end since we lost in the end. When the entire tournament was over, my birthday came up. It was all nice and good, but a few days after that, I suddenly felt a severe stinging pain in my left foot. I didn’t know what it was, all I could say is that I hurt so bad that I couldn’t walk, so I had to lend some crutches from my cousin. As usual when something is hurting and it won’t go away after a week, I went to the doctor, they touched my foot and I nearly cry in pain. They send me to get an x-ray scan of the foot. Nothing showed up, so they sent me to the HR, which for those who don’t know what that is, it’s just a huge machine, making a lot of noise which will show pictures of the scanned object in a more detailed way. As I hoped it would show something, they said there was not anything wrong with the foot. At this the doctors were quite annoyed with my presence and my persistence of the pain in my foot. So, after 4 months of agonizing pain and a very bad start of a new school year, I was referred to a new hospital where they saw the old x-scan of my foot and showed me it. I could clearly see my foot was broken. They wanted to do a rescan of my foot to see how much it was healed and then they wanted to put a cast on it. I was happy they figured what was wrong out and that they helped me, but what was missing was my absence in school. Most of my classmates knew as much as I did, maybe less, but they kept asking me if they could use my crutches. I gave them permission. But there was also those who felt as if I were getting too much attention and even said to me that there was nothing wrong with my foot and I should stop walking with the crutches. As many would have thought, I thought the same; “how rude”. I shrugged it off.
Eventually, the cast would  be taken off and I had to learn how to walk again. As I regained my mobility, I slowly lost my interest in other things. My social life slowly dwindled, and I stopped going to soccer since I felt it got too serious and I didn’t get anywhere (mostly because I was put on the losing team). One and a half year went by and I got into a new class. Everything seemed fine and I was in an association of runners and I ran a few times a week to keep up my physique. But as I was out running on a Sunday, my knee suddenly felt dull and painful. I must note I did not even run 500 meters. But as the pain grew, my mobility in my knee fell. It locked itself in place and I could barely bend it. I told the others I could not keep going and they should just go without me and I would go back to where we started. I limbed back, sat down, yet still having pain. A week went by, and I was forced back on crutches and I was unable to have anything on my knee because even that felt painful. Same deal as before, I went to the doctors, they scanned it. Both x-ray and HR, but nothing had any results. 6 months later my doctor referred me to a private hospital where the doctor, after a few ‘tests’ knew exactly who I should go to because he has dealt with patients with similar symptoms. After I met the new doctor, he gave me some meds and they worked for around 3 months. In the 3 months, I could wear normal jeans, walk, and run properly, but after those months went by, it was back to the crutches. I was hospitalized a month after the fallback and was in rehabilitation. I got some tasks I had to do to fix the pain, even though they didn’t make sense. They basically told me I had to rub my knee with a towel for 60 seconds 3 times with a 30-60 second interval. Long story short, it worked, and I didn’t have any pain after the 4 weeks at the hospital. Though, I was forced to take some medicine, but as long as I didn’t feel any pain and I could walk, I was happy. I finished school after one and a half years with decent grades. Nothing I could do much about since I am not the best at the oral exams, though I was happy with the results. I went to high school, hoping everything would turn out well, but the knee pain came back. I’d say I had a “great” start on high school if you ask me. Even though my mom was very concerned about my grades and how well it went at school, I somehow pulled through. Even the 3 years prior with an absence percentage of more than 50%. The only reason I could pull through these agonizing years was thanks  to anime and manga. Since my knee pain would pull me out of school and tear apart my social life, even if I didn’t even have any to begin with, I felt some kind of joy with reading manga and watch anime when I could. Even though the first 2 years of high school felt like hell, I finished a few classes and got a better exam grade than some of my other classmates. It went well and as I was frequently going to a psychologist, reason being my knee pain (it’s mostly mental (think of phantom pain, then you’d understand, I hope)), but also because they found out I had suicidal thoughts. Even though I had those thoughts, I didn’t try to do anything since I had grown an anxiety for pain. But as I was going back and forth at the psychologists, they managed to find out I had a severe depression and might’ve had it for more than 6 years (at that point, I already knew I had a depression, but didn’t have the diagnose) and they also found out I had autism, not much, but enough to give me the diagnose Asperger’s Syndrome. I was fine with it, yet they didn’t give me many tools to deal with my depression, but I had my anime and manga, so I still had some hope.
Enjoy.
Chapter 1: What I desire
Well, now that we have that sappy story out of the way, we’re back to the present, where I am still dealing with a severe depression, not finding an end to it. Well, the pain I have in the knee has come back, but not as severe as it used to be. I go to the gym on a regular basis. It used to be 5 times a week, but my psychologist thought it would be best if I went there 3 times a week instead. Before the pandemic hit I would do a lot of stomach exercises and work with my knee, but after all the precautions, I can’t do many of them, so I chose to just run with a pace of 9 km/h or 6 mi/h for 20 minutes for the last 10, I’d increase it to 10 km/h. When I am done with that, I’d do some sit-ups and pull-ups for around 20 minutes. When I tell people that I go to the gym a few times a week, there’s always the follow up question “Then you must like it, right?”, but that’s actually not the case. I despise it, but I must do it, so I have been told, that is. The reason why I actually run for 30 minutes is because I watched the anime Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru (Run With the Wind). It seemed inspiring how they were running and the amount of fun they had with it, so I wanted that too. I envied the fun they had when they were running together. But thanks to the diagnosis – my  Asperger’s – I cannot feel any human emotions, such as happiness, sadness, or anger. For me, I am just confused. But now I have a new goal for my workout. I have been reading Boku no Hero Academia – almost from when it was released – and have enjoyed it ever since. But one day, a certain hero was introduced. Yes, Rumi Usagiyama, the rabbit hero: Mirko. When she first appeared in the hero ranking right after All Might’s fight vs AFO, she has been on my mind a lot. Her cocky line, her daring attitude, and her epic hero entrance when Endeavor beat the first HE Nomu, give me goosebumps. The way she fights and how she is as a hero, always working to fight villains and to protect civilians, is something I look up to. She is my hero, and maybe my waifu. So much as I want merch of her. But don’t get me wrong, I am well aware that she’s out of my league and I am just a very unlucky kid, plus I live in a world where quirks don’t exist. She’s a fictional character and I am a person who reads Japanese comics for fun. But I can at least try to do my best to look fit and be in shape and prepare myself for what will happen next.
To be continued.

What your average person who’s favourite Blazblue character is (insert char here) is like:
(Read-more because this is a looooong post)
Ragna: 50% chance of being a Blazblue giga-normie who’s only played cross tag battle and who’s only knowledge of Blazblue comes from abridged Alter Memory parodies on youtube. Other 50% chance of actually being a giant fan of the series since the old days and a chill guy.
Jin: Almost certainly a giant edgelord and if you’re unlucky, a big-time role-player who’s cleaned out the RagJin tag on AO3 and Fanfiction.net dozens of times. Approach with great caution.
Noel: Twitter resident who’s feed is full of pictures of Noel and whatever other half-obscure anime girls they’re obsessed with. Overuses the word ‘waifu’ and likely has a fightstick with a Noel decal on it.
Mu-12: Same as above except with a slight added hint of edge.
Rachel: Similar energy to the Noel fan except probably an even bigger weirdo. Has gotten into countless twitter wars that probably go something like “but she’s actually a thousand years old!!!”.
Taokaka: 50/50 chance of either being a horny furry who doesn’t even know what game Taokaka is from, or a really chill person who likes Tao for her cute and funny personality. Even if they’re the second type, they probably don’t know or care much about the ridiculous story of the series.
Iron Tager: Giant shitposter who’s only here to do epic funnies on netplay as Tager. Spends at least 50x more time labbing obscure tech and combos than actually playing the game. Likely a hardened and punished war veteran of Blazblue if they actually played Tager back in the Calamity Trigger days.
Litchi: An enormous tournament tryhard who’s success in locals half comes from the huge amount of time they spend on the game, and half from the deafening clickety-clackety-ass noise their custom fightstick makes that tilts the opponent to hell and back.
Arakune: They remember what was taken from them since the days of CT and CS. They will still beat your ass anyway. Extremely powerful person you must treat with caution and respect.
Bang: Absolute legend with god-tier taste. Bang fans are the chads of the Blazblue fandom that while small in number, are great in heart and passion. On a side-note, they probably kinda suck at the game.
Carl: An obscure person, but one who knows a lot about the series and only wanted the best for Carl. 50/50 chance of either being a god at the game, or being unable to do a 236 input.
Relius: A bastard but in a sexy way that makes you kind of respect them. They probably just like his aesthetic and playstyle, but that doesn’t stop them from making jokes about his robot wife.
Hakumen: Probably only ever got into Blazblue in the first place because Hakumen looked badass and they wanted to main him. Knows Hakumen’s entire monologue off by heart; doesn’t know when to stop pressing drive.
Nu-13: Highly volatile and dangerous being. I strongly recommend you stay as far away as possible from them, because whether they’re an enormously horny weeb or someone maniacal enough to main her, nothing good can come of interaction with this perilous partitioner.
Lambda-11: An actually normal person unlike the Nu fan, they’re just here for the cute girls and a good time. That said, if they main her then prepare to get your ass beat just the same as if you versed the Nu main.
Tsubaki: An underdog of the Blazblue fandom, they understand and appreciate greatness where the rabble of the fandom cannot. Probably sick to death of everyone saying Tsubaki sucks and is annoying. Probably can’t play Tsubaki.
Izayoi: Same as above except they’re also a giant tryhard. Netplay monster that messages “anyone wanna play cf?” on discord except no one replies because they play Izayoi and have a 80%+ winrate.
Hazama: Horny. They’re so horny. Hazama fans are an extremely dangerous and extremely horny subsection of the Blazblue community that I fear more than anything else.
Terumi: Exact same as above except unlike the Hazama fan who can at least be somewhat tasteful and reserved about their horniness, the Terumi fan is completely shameless and doesn’t care if anyone knows.
Makoto: They’re like the Taokaka fan except they actually play the game. Some are weird, but most are cool people with good taste.
Valkenhayn: idk has anyone ever seen someone who’s favourite character is valkenhayn? please pm me and I’ll add whatever you say here.
Platinum: Doesn’t know what a Blazblue is; just here because Platinum is cute and looks like a magical girl. Either into Pretty Cure, Madoka, or both.
Amane: Extremely respectable person of good taste, but also basically an extinct species. Wishes Amane got into cross tag battle, even though they know it will never happen.
Bullet: Horny. They’re like in a middle-ground of shamelessness between the Hazama and Terumi fan, except their twitter feed can’t be flooded with Bullet images like the Noel fan’s because no one else’s favourite character is Bullet.
Azrael: Extremely powerful and kingly aura, the Azrael fan strikes a primal fear into my heart that no other person can. Whether or not they’re horny for Azrael doesn’t matter, their energy is mighty enough to make all respect them.
Kagura: Horny, but tastefully so. They’re like a toned-down version of the Azrael fan, with another notable difference being that they actually have to use their brain when they play the game.
Kokonoe: 500 IQ Blazblue genius who needs to alt-tab out to a google doc showing them the optimal combo for their current position every time they land a 5B. Also likes catgirls.
Celica: Like the Lambda fan, they’re just here for cute girls and a good time. Was excited about Celica getting into cross tag battle even though they don’t play it.
Nine: I don’t even have to say it. You already know why people like this character. Let’s just go to the next one.
Jubei: Person most likely to like Nine for an actually good reason, they love the ninja grandpa cat because they have good taste and love kitties.
Izanami: No one calls Izanami their favourite character unless they’re REALLY good at her, so if you see the Izanami fan, watch out. Like the Izayoi fan, no one wants to verse them because they’ll get their ass beaten 100-0 and will get a freshly filled salt shaker while they’re at it.
Es: Have they actually played Xblaze? Do they really like Es for non-superficial reasons? Could it be that their love of Es is one deeply rooted in her characterisation and storyline? Yeah probably not.
Mai: See above but replace “played Xblaze” with “read Remix Heart”.
Hibiki: Do not be fooled. Although the Hibiki fan seems innocent enough, that maybe they just like his design and playstyle, these people are horny as HELL. Bonus points if there’s a clear pattern of them being horny for twinks in other media too.
Naoto: Unlike Es and Mai, this person most likely actually DOES know something about Bloodedge Experience and is a big Naoto fan because of it. However they’re sad because no one else does and when they say something like “Spinner Superior is such a cool villain” everyone else says “Who?”.
Susanoo: As if it were an ancient evil uncovered after dozens of millennia, Mori unleashed Susanoo on us. and subsequently, the horniest and scariest form of Blazblue fan to date. I fear them twice as much as I respect them and their complete audaciousness to be horny for Susanoo.

What a fantastic thing, so many AMAZING runs, and also runs i missed that i need to go back and watch. Finished the “Get my Money” saga - finally went and got my id, after getting an appointment in the big city, only for it to get cancelled because of *waves at the world as it is* and then getting a new appointment in a different city, then going to walmart and getting the check cashed (which was a mini-saga in it’s own right, check wouldn’t go through and calls had to be made and yada yada it eventually went through, put money onto a prepaid paypal card we thought would let us put the money into the account, nope, did not work, but still let us send money back to people so a mostly-win!) and then grabbing food. Whew. Bought things and watched lots of GDQ and yea. Had an appointment somewhere in there, with the nurse of the therapy place, she asked me LOTS of questions and oh lawd i had so much anxiety about all of it and barfed lots of words, but in the end she... well, didn’t pass me off, per se, more “the psychologist will be MUCH more qualified to deal with your disaster of a mess of medications because holy shit you are on SO MANY MEDS wow holy hot damn.” so. Ya know. Other than all of that. Eating lots of good foods, drinking lots of good drinks, lots of liquids. Lots of pain, migraine and wrists and arthritis and yuck. Brain has been unkind too. Anxiety rampant and rapid spiraling up and down. Exhausted. So fucking exhausted all of the time. Holy shit. i wish i wasn’t so tired. Bleh. Get back on the rodeo horse now though. Let’s go.
Food: A Liquid: A Pain: D Brain: D
Tomorrow: Wash 2 plates/bowls/pieces of silverware, 2 chapters, Dailies, Vamp shiz, 2 anime eps.
Ever Onwards and Upwards!

Hey umm 👉🏽👈🏽 I know you guys are not here for that I swear I'm working on the AU but I kinda wanted to show you some of my doodles? I made some South Park love childs? I kinda want to do something with it in the future but probably not on this blog
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noa (15) and Abby (10) Marsh-Broflovski
When Stan and Kyle got married they decided to mix their family names together.
Noa: He's a goth, but doesn't necessarily hang out with other goths and prefer his friend group (Sophia, Cassia and Violet). He likes to act serious but is actually super nice, especially to his sister
Abby: She's kind of a crybaby, she's afraid of everything and is ALWAYS in her dads' arms or Noa's. She has a bunny plushie from her best friend (Basil) that she carry at school. She's Stan's princess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophia (15) Testaburger and Susan (17) Turner
Cartman got married with Wendy and she insisted on keeping her name. When they had Sophia they gave her Testaburger. When Sophia turned 14, he discovered he has an older daughter, Susan, he had with Heidi before getting married.
Sophia: She had been raised like she's the most important person in the world. She ALWAYS get what she wants and everyone at school is scared of her. She's the scariest feminist, and social justice warrior in the whole town, ans crush her enemies with her bare hands.
Susan: She's really calm and the whole opposite to Sophia when it comes to their personalities. Sophia hates her and that saddens her a LOT. She feels rejected by her sister and even tho Cartman loves her, she feels like she can never be part of his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cassia, Violet (15) and Basil (10) Mccormick
When they got married, Butters cut his parents completely out of his life and choose Kenny's name. He was scared his parents might do to his eventual children what they did to him. The Mccormick kids were raised with extreme love and CARE for familyhood, to offer them what Leo and Kenny never had
Cassia and Violet: Very popular at school, everybody loves them, they're pretty, extremely nice, caring and always smiling. BUT they might have been raised by Mysterion, but they got raised by Professor Chaos too. They can be PITYLESS and HARSH when they want. If they wanted, they could be the biggest villains of the town and have everybody at their feet. That's why they're super close to Sophia.
Basil: À pure angel! He's FASCINATED by everything, super curious and adventurous. His sisters love him to DEATH and is always found pampered and cuddled by them. He's his sisters' biggest treasure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmo (17), Orion (15) and Nova (10) Tucker
Cosmo: He got anxiety from Tweek which gives him massif anxiety attacks most of the time. You can find him staring intensity at a wall, that means he's having an attack. Tweek blamed himself for years and because of that, Cosmo tries to act tough and neutral like Craig for his parents and his siblings.
Orion: He's a fucking WEEB. His room looks like comic con, he even has these damns hug pillow with his waifus on them. Craig HATES it and think his son is a looser, but as long as he's not into YAOI he can deal with it. He did try to disown him once when Orion showed his preference for bunnies instead of Guinea pigs. Orion has 0 interest in real girls and spend his days drooling over his waifus. Yes he likes Hentai.
Nova: She's a Lil shit. She's exactly like Craig's sister to which Tweek pointed it out once (Craig: How DARE you compare my DAUGHTER to that piece of shit). She always try to annoy the shit out of Orion and steal his fake katanas when he's not here. She makes fun of his passion ALL the time.
Tumblr media
Lucas (15) Black
Lucas: He's SO shy and awkward all the time. He's Orion's best friend and is the best student in school. Always have the best grades, he feels like he needs to push himself all the time for his Dad, and to be worthy of his heritage, even tho Token keeps telling him that he doesn't need to prove himself and just be a teenager. His shyness FRUSTRATE Clyde because he was the total opposite when he was a kid, and Token keeps scolding Clyde about it. He also have a MASSIVE crush on Violet Mccormick.
