You know that thing where your inner monologue takes on the tone and cadence of whatever book you’re reading at the moment? (I feel pretty certain I’ve seen a post about this, so I know I’m not the only one.)

So, I’m reading Brutal Kunnin by Mike Brooks at the moment (excellent fun, imaginative fight scenes and big explosions) so my brain keeps throwing things at me like

So, a big thing that happened to me lately is that I enjoy reading again. I was previously a voracious reader, but after the PhD it was really hard for me to enjoy reading. I was just burnt out on it. And sometimes I would read a book, and enjoy it, but it always took a lot of effort to get to the point of picking it up.

But it’s just clicked again recently. I want to read. It’s like an itch in my brain. It’s like when you start a new game and when you’re not playing it you can’t wait to get back to it. I finished She Who Became the Sun just before Christmas and then I reread the entire five books of Hitchhikers Guide over my Christmas break, and in the past three days I finally read This is How You Lose the Time War. (Incredible book. Bigolas was right.) I can’t wait to get into my next book.

It’s just nice to finally have this source of joy return after six years of being that meme from the Office, you know - ‘I love books, love to read one someday’

Welp, dad is in palliative care. I’m coping with it by planning out a really kickass outfit to wear to his funeral. Something that would make him proud. I hope I still fit into the waistcoat he made me for my 30th.

Had the most Stardew Valley-ass experience yesterday. Went to have a look at my local community garden, and a nice old man gave me a whole pumpkin. Then I asked a lady about a plant I didn’t recognise, and she said, ‘oh, that’s the amaranth’, then started talking about the garden’s pomegranate tree.

My local library service (the one where I live, not the one where I work) had a ‘workshop’ with a local award-winning romance author, about how to write spicy scenes that aren’t cringey. So I went along to get some tips for my fic writing, and my major takeaway was this:

Showed Dad my art ipad and 🍏 ✏️ and how procreate works, and he was really intrigued so I just let him have a play with it for a while and now I have a doodle by my dad that I can keep forever

Listening to TAZ: Balance while I travel bc comfort media, and I’m sure I’ve said this before, but. It’s a funny show but not a single one of the comedic bits comes close to the comedy of listening to Justin in the first episode be like ‘heehoo I named my wizard after food lolol’ and Griffin going ‘maybe your epic story arc will be to invent the taco hahahaha’ when you know

a) That man will be crying real tears about that imaginary wizard by the end of the finale

b) Discovering tacos is going to be a pivotal moment in saving the universe
