I’m sure Sharn loved Endon deeply and understood the deception of the Shadow Lord but imagine the resentment she felt as she watched her son leave the safety of their home to fix what her husband and his ancestors had broken

I always found it sort of unrealistic that not a single person who lived in the Palace knew what it was like outside. Obviously control was super tight but I don't think they could really function without at least some contact with the outside. Sharn did come from Tora after all so there must have been some travel in and out. My first instinct is to say that there must have been more Ols/spies but I think that's a big cop out. However, things make more sense when instead of "no one knew" you change it to "anyone who might have known had no way to change it." Whether they would have been silenced by force (Min and Doran) or simply had no sway with the court (any of the lower-rung servants) them knowing wouldn't have changed anything. And of course there must have been higher-ups who didn't necessarily sell their soul or whatever, but who would have valued their status and power more than the lives of the citizens. Like maybe the royals were kept completely in the dark but I do think it was more complicated than just "no one in the Palace knew." Idk.

💕Valentine’s Day Treats💕  Marilen/Ranesh (at @mynamesdrstuff‘s request) 2/5
The wind screamed and whipped Marilen’s hair from its binding, half-blinding her. It felt to her as if the land was raging, crying centuries worth of pain and fear for all to hear. She could tell Cherry—her father’s favourite horse—was tiring underneath her. She felt a pang of guilt for pushing the beast so hard. Guilt, too, for slipping away from Tora while her father slept. But shame did not cause her to turn back west, nor did it cause her to slow her speed. She could arrive in Del within the hour, if only she did not falter.
Even as she sped down the broken road, she felt the west calling to her, singing a song that she felt in her blood and bones. The magic of Tora faded the farther one travelled, but those who called it home could never quite leave it behind.
“It is like an addiction,” Marilen had once watched Ranesh say to Zeean as the older woman had tried to explain the intense homesickness of those who left the white city. “That place is a prison that numbs the mind.”
“That is not true,” Marilen had said quietly, and touched his arm. “I would call it feeling as if your heart is aching for something you have never known.”
Ranesh had softened at her touch, but the confusion and hurt in his eyes did not quite fade. Had he been Toran she imagined that she would have heart his thoughts. Am I not enough?
The thought of her husband quickened the pounding of Marilen’s heart. Poor Cherry was already burdened by her weight and the satchels of food she had tied to him, but she dug her boot into the gelding’s flank and urged him forward faster.
The road came to a sharp turn and Cherry whinnied in protest as Marilen guided him forth. The sun had set, but the moon was bright and to Marilen’s alarm she could see a figure on horseback moving swiftly towards her. Before she could even think about riding off the path, the figure was upon her. Marilen ignored the sharp knife of fear in her belly and prepared to kick Cherry into a state of flight when the figure drew closer and removed his hood.
“Ranesh!” Marilen cried, astonished.
Ranesh shook his head in equal disbelief and dismounted. “I was coming for you,” he rushed to her side and helped her climb down from Cherry. “What are you doing here?”
Marilen bit back tears. She had not realized how frightened and lonely she had been until she felt his arms around her. “The ports are open, Ranesh. I have brought what I could. It is not much, but I could not sit idly while our people starved.”
Ranesh’s hand slid into the tangles of her hair and then moved slowly down to the swell of her belly. He smiled softly and his lovely eyes met hers. “Do they know you are here?”
“No,” she said, knowing he meant everyone and yet no one at all. “You were right, Ranesh. Tora is my home, and it always will be, but it is too easy to repeat the mistakes of the past. I fear that already my people have forgotten the mistakes we have made. But we cannot do that. Our debt is not yet paid, and I fear that there is worse to come.”
Ranesh pressed his lips into her hair. “You are a brilliant and brave woman, and I am so lucky to be yours. Time is of the essence, and we must make haste. Marilen—know this: I think you made the right decision coming to Del, but I would love you even if you decided to stay behind.”
At this Marilen could not help but laugh. “No, you would not. And I never would have stayed. But you know that.”
Ranesh grinned and Marilen pressed her forehead against his. “Then, my love,” he said. “We must hurry back to the king; would you not say?”
Marilen pulled away and stepped back toward Cherry. “I have a duty to Lief,” she said with a smile.
Ranesh mounted his horse. “And my duty is to be with you.”
She smiled as she urged her horse forward. Although she did not quite know the terror that she would find in the city, she felt as if she would be able to face it unafraid.

Star Trek Aliens Names Bank
Compiled for your convenience, a bank of canon names for the most common aliens of Star Trek.
These are compiled from Memory Alpha and Memory Beta. I tried to distinguish given and surnames as best I could, and generally did not include a name if it was too unclear. Same goes for names of individuals without a specified gender, since we don't know if or how names are gendered for these various cultures. This is also the reason why names are split by gender at all. Beta canon was occasionally used to distinguish given names v. surnames for Alpha canon names (such as Dukat being specified as a surname). For characters that were spies disguised as another species, if their alter ego had a distinct name, I gave each name to their respective species. If not (i.e. Seska), I did not include the name because its unclear to which culture the name derives from. There is a good amount of guesswork in here, and undoubtedly errors.
Species included are Andorians, Bajorans, Betazoids, Bolians, Caitians, Cardassians, Denobulans, Ferengi, Jem'Hadar, Klingons, Orions, Romulans, Tellarites, Trill, Vorta, and Vulcans.
This can be used for general reference at the sorts of names appropriate to each species, or for random generation based on phonemes, such as can be found in Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator, whose namesbase feature was the base concept used for this.
Several of these have very small sample sizes, and may produce janky results in phoneme generators. Male names are overrepresented for pretty much every species. Make of that what you will
Andorian
Andorians in Alpha Canon are generally referred to by only one name, but in Beta Canon have an expanded naming system (only names aligning with this system are included), with a given name, a surname prefix (ch' for chan, sh' for shen, th' for thaan, and zh' for zhen), and a surname, generally taken from the zhavey (zhen parent). They also tend to have nicknames, which are included on a separate line. Chan and thaan are often considered to more or less correspond to masculinity, and when dealing with binary species, tend to use he/him pronouns, with shen and zhen being the same towards femininity and generally using she/her pronouns.

Romulan
Romulans in Alpha canon seem to have a simple given name surname system, but are said to have three names: one for outsiders, one for family, and a true name. In Beta canon, Romulans have a given name, may or may not have an additional middle name, and have a surname. There are prefixes as well, with gendered prefixes (t' for female, tr' for male, and s' for groups (and presumably non-binary); omitted in familiar settings) for surnames and prefixes for middle names (i' when using the full name, ir' for formality lacking one or more names), as well as T' occasionally being added to any part of a female name.

Tellarite
In Alpha canon, we only have singular names for male Tellarites. Beta canon gives most Tellarites a given name and surname. There does appear to be some sort of naming system at place, with uncapitalized middle names, but I haven't read any books featuring Tellarites and don't know what it may be. If someone does know, please pass it on. These middle have been included with the surnames.

Vulcan
Vulcans have family names, but these are said to be unpronouncable by humans and generally never mentioned, hence not being shown here. In general, 'T' starting a name indicates its being feminine, and 'S' starting a name indicates its being masculine. Multiple characters of either gender have been shown with the 'opposite' starting letter, and Beta canon has mentioned a tradition of bestowing the name of a family matriarch upon a male child and a tradition of not naming newborns and instead naming them at some unspecified later date.

As Sharn herself lay lost in sleep, the Dread Gnome Gla-Thon, Steven of the Plains, Zeean of Tora, Manus of Raladin, Gers of the Jalis, Doom, Barda and Jasmine gathered around the bed of Lindal of Broome [...]
A neat little detail is the way that this is almost exactly who was present for renewing the oath of loyalty in 1.8 (including a poisoned loved one!) but! Every tribe except the mere has a representative! What is this LMAO

So I've been re-reading my favourite childhood book series ever Deltora Quest, and something has been bugging me. When Lief eventually moved back to the forge between DQ2 and DQ3, like did Sharn move back with him, or was he there alone?
Clearly Barda was in the palace and it's never stated where Jasmine was living (other than being in Tora at the start of Dragons Nest) so was he just there alone in his bachelor pad?
Thoughts?

Ok back to Deltora for a moment bc I just had some thoughts about Sharn but most of them are ????
Like she's Toran, because all the royalty people are supposed to marry Torans or whatever, but she supposedly grew up in the Del Castle? And never met Endon before they married?
The Del Castle that's surrounded by a barrier and illusion? Which are like the two biggest things in Toran magic? Which she clearly has a grasp on??
Like. Like if she didn't grow up in Tora, then how did she actually manage to never run into Endon when they were confined to the same building? How did she learn magic? Why was she allowed to lean magic? She must have known she was going to marry the prince her whole life, like, was her childhood a series of getting into a room only to be rushed out halfway through a boardgame or book bc the prince was coming in??
No wonder she tossed Praline or whatever his name was out the window. I would have too, between being fully aware that he's the one holding the illusion up and him being the reason she can't enjoy going into the garden with that chance that her fiance will unwittingly stroll through and she'll be shoved into a rosebush to hide

scar
note: This is part 3 of a (rather disjointed) series of ‘missing’ scenes from the books. While the parts can stand alone, I’ve thrown in some callbacks.
Other parts:
part 1: stay
part 2: follow
part 2.5: promises
epilogue: after the storm
content warnings: mental illness, panic attacks, blood
Lindal wakes to a scream, but there is nothing for her to fight. It is dark and still, and the night is not burning. Barda is whole and untouched beside her, holding out a hand.
She takes it, shaking slightly as the panic ebbs, and the visions of torn limbs and shrieking men fade.
“What-?”
A low sob from Barda’s other side and finally Lindal notices Jasmine is leaning over Lief, whispering softly. Lindal cannot see Lief’s face, but she can see the way his hands clutch desperately at Jasmine as his whole body contorts with fear.
Lindal has heard the rumours that the king was unwell, that he wandered the halls of the palace like a lost soul of Tora, that staff and guards had heard him shrieking and sobbing late at night. There is an evil in the palace, the streets had whispered. It will take our king and our hope and our country if we let it.
“He will be fine,” Barda murmurs, his voice tinged with pain and resignation. “Jasmine is used to it.”
“What happened to him?” Lindal asks softly. But Barda just shakes his head. It is not his story to tell.
* * *
“No kissing, you two,” Lindal says. “Brothers do not do that.”
Lewin and Jay scowl and blush red. Laughing, Lindal turns to Berry. He looks strangely vulnerable without his beard but his smile is still the same. His nephews look away politely as he kisses her.
“I will be back,” he whispers, promises. “Wait for me.”
Four days after she sends Lief, Barda and Jasmine off on the back of a dragon, Lindal hands her room key to the tavern owner, shoulders a bag filled with her belongings, and begins the long walk to Del.
* * *
Jasmine dreamed of this sometimes, alone and in secret. She imagined that one day she might be here, sitting on Lief’s chest with her legs tight on his hips and her hands on his face. His eyes lock on hers as he arches and moans, but the wind is howling and the air is dense with poison and not like this, never like this, no no no please…
“Lief-” she sobs. A trickle of blood rolls down his neck and his hands grip her wrists, desperately trying to push her away. “Lief, I am sorry, I am so sorry-”
Quill had called for him- you are one of us now. But she will not let them have him. He is not theirs.
Eleven…
* * *
Lief looks at her through his new mask of blood. “It is not your fault, Jasmine.” He tries to smile, though it makes the wounds around his mouth stretch and sting. “And it does not matter anyway. I cannot even remember it.”
Jasmine smooths the green cream onto his face, trying not to let him see the terror in her eyes. She wonders whether she will ever be able to forget. Whether she will ever be able touch his face without remembering his screams, and the time she hurt him so badly he could no longer remember who she was.
* * *
Standing alone, turning to face the Masked One, Lief cannot feel anything anymore- his courage and his heart have died, and his body will be glad to join them.
* * *
There are still fresh pink scars splotching across his jawline and up his neck. Another snakes along his hairline above his right eye, visible only when he pushes back his hair.
“I am sorry,” she whispers.
“What for?”
“I did this to you… I scarred you.”
Lief smiles. “No, you saved me.” His face carries the proof.
* * *
Prin screams, Barda yells at her to stay, and all of a sudden Jasmine is seven years old again, helpless and alone, watching as her family is stolen from her.
* * *
Sharn’s outstretched arms fall. The girl her son loves is standing alone. Her face is white with fear, red with tears, black with horror.
Into Sharn’s mind comes that night six months prior, when Lief told her that she was to go to Tora. She had protested, vigorously. She knew something was wrong, even if Lief had not yet admitted it. She could see it in the tremble of his hands, hear it in the croak of his voice. She could feel the anxiety crackling off Jasmine like the sparks of a blazing fire. But Lief had refused to hear any arguments. “You must go, Mother, and I must stay here. It is our duty,”
“My only duty is to you!”
“You know that is not true.” His eyes were so full and aching. It scared her sometimes, just how much her son could feel.
“No, please… sunshine…” she had whispered desperately, his childhood nickname, the word she sang over and over on those nights in the forge when chaos reigned outside. When the darkness had taken her parents and her life and her name, and the baby in her arms was the only light left in the world. “Sunshine, I-”
“I hope you have a safe trip, Mother,” Lief had interrupted her, clasping her hands. “Write me a letter to let me know when you have arrived.”
He had kissed her forehead, and a thought had caught in Sharn’s mind, and held. I will never see him again.
“Jasmine?” she whispers. “Jasmine, where is my son?”
* * *
Jasmine’s dreams are so empty they suffocate her, but when she looks out to sea she knows he must still be alive. Why else can she feel her soul tugging and pulling at the places she has stitched it to his?
On the seventh day Marilen grips her arm, her whole body seized with grief. “Jasmine… they are dead. You know that. You must know that,”
“Lief is not dead,” she whispers. “If he was… I would feel it.”
Marilen closes her eyes. The people of Tora share their thoughts, and the city is somber. Outside their walls, Deltora goes on, unaware that tragedy is about to crash around their heads. Doom refuses to declare anything until they know for sure. In many ways he and Jasmine are alike.
She knows what will happen- what has to happen. They will lay Lief’s body before Jasmine and she will inspect it. She will lay her head on his chest to check for a heartbeat. She will call his name softly, shake him, and beg him to wake up. And then, only then, will she accept that Lief is dead.
It does not seem right that Marilen is to take Jasmine’s place, when Jasmine was born to be their queen.
* * *
Jasmine breaks free of the others and she and Lief fall to their knees together in the sands of the Sleeping Dunes, hugging and crying and kissing.
“Well hello to you too,” Barda growls, a smile on his face. Still sobbing, she flings her arm around him, drawing him into the hug.
Later, they rest together under a tent in the Sleeping Dunes, and while Lief sleeps, using Jasmine’s lap as his pillow, she looks at Barda and knows how he dreams of this for all of them- peace, all they have ever wanted.
* * *
He understands the way Laughing Jack looks at her (pulsing desperation and anger), he sees the way he holds her (tight against his body), he hears the way he speaks (dare and threat, rolled into proposition) and Lief’s blood runs cold.
* * *
Barda and Jasmine are arguing about Torans and plots and trust, but Lief’s mind is filled with other matters. As soon as Barda leaves he pulls Jasmine towards him and kisses her frantically, desperately. He is only eighteen and about to die but for a moment he thinks maybe the whole world might have stopped. Perhaps nothing matters anymore but this. She touches his face and she is not afraid.
When he breaks away his eyes are glistening with tears. “You are not going to die,” she promises him, and she promises herself. I am not going to let you die.
* * *
They disregard the order of the king because Barda would never consider not following, and Jasmine understands love in a single word.
* * *
But now Jasmine is choking. Behind her eyes, covered in slime, she can still see him hunched by the ragged carcass of the platform. He had looked at Gla-Thon with eyes as bitter and hate-filled as those which had once stared at her from a feathered mask, and Jasmine knows that it is over.
She cannot see or breathe or scream but she can still hear the wind and the dragons and all of Deltora is howling in despair that theirs has turned against them. She does not want to hear it anymore. She hopes that death will come soon. She hopes that Mamma will be there to greet her.
I will destroy you…
A lurch, a jolt, and suddenly the world comes rushing back into focus as instinctively, painfully, she gasps in the chilled air of the chapel. Wildly she turns and watches as the black slime eagerly surges forward, and disappears into the shattered floor.
“Lief? Lief!”
He is gone. And there is only one place he could be.
“Where is he Jasmine?” Barda shouts. He cannot see. He cannot see. He cannot see. “Jasmine- do not follow him Jasmine!”
* * *
His mother reaches out with still-shaking arms and envelopes him.
“You are alive,” Lief murmurs quietly into her shoulder, almost surprised.
“We both are,” Sharn replies. Her eyes grow concerned, and she brushes his matted hair back from his forehead. “What happened, my darling?” she says, running a gentle finger across his mottled scars.
“Jasmine saved me.” It is all he needs to say, all he will ever need to say. Sharn smiles, and embraces Jasmine too.
* * *
She thinks they are safe, and the future is theirs to create, but then Lief walks back into the room with a hand full of map pieces and news of the world’s end and Jasmine wonders if they will ever be allowed to be happy.
* * *
They slide, shaky-legged, off Fidelis’ back. Before them, in the shadow of Steven’s caravan, their friends stand speechless, looking at them with a look of awe that Jasmine does not like.
Lief mumbles something incoherent. He is still clutching them both tightly, like he will never let go. He looks like he might collapse, his face confused and his eyes blank. Barda and Jasmine look at each other in concern, and Jasmine squeezes Lief’s hand. “Lief?”
He turns to them, his teeth chattering in the cold night air. “I… thank you. I do not know how-”
Smiling, Barda puts his arm around him. “We were always in this together, were we not? Remember what we said, right at the start? Fate decreed we would be three.”
“Clever fate,” Jasmine grins.
Barda looks at their intertwined hands, the way Jasmine looks at Lief. “Clever fate indeed.”
Lief leans into Barda, pulling Jasmine closer to him, and they stand in the light of the full moon watching the dragons take to the sky.
* * *
One of Jasmine’s favourite memories is six weeks after the first Dragon Night. She is sitting on the grass of the palace gardens, under the dappled shade of an old tree. Lief sits beside her, humming softly to himself, some Del folk tune. He tilts his head upwards towards the sun, closing his eyes briefly as he smiles. His eyes are not dark and his face is not lined with pain. It is such a beautiful day.
* * *
Sometimes Sharn cannot help but wonder whether this whole mess was just their fate, that everything (Endon and Jarred, the Shadow Lord, the Quests), happened this way only so they could find each other, for Lief and Jasmine together can change the world. And that is why when she looks at Anna, she does not see their child- she sees validation.
note: I have been writing this fic in scraps and pieces for years and years, and I am so happy that this wonderful fandom finally motivated me to put it all together and finish it! Thank you for reading.

Glock
Spoilers.
Absolute fun spoilers.
Do you think they told anyone about what really happened to Glock? Do you think Gers ever got curious, and wanted to know what caused Glock to “die in our arms”, as Jasmine said. Even if he didn’t, did, at the very least, any of the original seven representatives wonder why Glock suddenly disappeared?
 I would suggest that Jinks would’ve spread rumours that he had run off with Jasmine in the dead of night, suddenly, but if that were true, Lief, Barda, and Doom would have known where they were without going to the Library; of course, Lief and Doom had only just arrived, and Barda was exhausted when he arrived a few days earlier, so perhaps they had missed it. It seems unlikely that Jinks would have dared -- or had the time, since it was a short time span between Jasmine and Glock leaving for the Os-Mine hills and the arrival of Lief, Doom, and Marilen in Del. Then, of course, Jinks was swept up with Lief and Barda in the pursuit with Fury, and so had no time in his trade of top-notch-secrets-he-most-definitely-should-not-tell. Following that, he was locked up in the upstairs bed chamber by Sharn, where his greed led to his downfall, when he escaped. So perhaps Jinks himself did not spread any particular rumours on  “the Lady Jasmine”.
Furthermore, others in the palace may or may not have noticed their absence. It is likely they would care not for the lumbering Jalis, and despite being part of the heroic trio, Jasmine is still the “wild girl” with a lengthening list of strange traits. If people noticed she had disappeared, they would have noted it down as something strange the Forest Girl did, and thought nothing else of it. Lief, of course, was believed to be in Tora, and the big, burly Barda was on business to Noradz. Perhaps the more intuitive observed Doom’s appearance, and wondered why Lief was not here; and perhaps ignored it, thinking that he was escorting their King to Tora. Although, many believed that he was fetching his “Toran bride”, and I would wonder why the fearless leader of the Resistance had arrived without the King and his special guest, why there was no grand entrance, and wonder at the dark gleam in his eye, darker than ever.
Nonetheless, it would appear that Glock had simply vanished in thin air, one night. With Jinks dead, and our favourite trio, Doom, Sharn, and Marilen (for she was there when Doom announced that Glock was not in his bed, although would probably not know who Glock is) are unlikely to speak of it in the open, there wouldn’t be anyone to tell that he is, in fact, dead.
Perhaps it was simply unwritten, or I have missed something, but Glock was never mentioned again. I would imagine Gers would ‘soldier on’ (especially as a Jalis) in public, but I wonder what he thought of as he lay in his bed, in those moments before he closed his eyes.
On a side note, the trio mistook Gers for Glock when they reached the Shadowlands, so I wonder how everyone else felt when they first met him. There was probably many times people misnamed him, and I wonder if the pain would show on his face, whether he grasped his family talismans, whether he cursed or swaggered and jokingly insulted his new friends in a jolly bellow.

deltora quest anastasia AU
because everything deserves an anastasia AU
endon and sharn are dead in this au sorry
barda as vlad, lief as dmitri, jasmine as anya, the shadow lord as rasputin
there are rumors that the deltoran heir is still alive
street rat orphan lief and former palace guard barda are searching for the heir (its not a con in this one, they’re genuinely trying to find him/her)
but neridah as the ‘grandma....... its me...... anastasia” lady omg
orphan-with-memory-loss jasmine literally stumbles into the abandoned Palace of Del and into their search efforts because she was told she could get passage to Tora
hold up - she’s the right age, she looks Del tribe, she has no memory of her past, her parents are missing or dead
perfect
they convince her to join them despite her doubts of her being royalty (actually she plans to ditch them once they reach tora)
let the journey of belligerent sexual tension begin
so many of the lines work omg
“lief, do you really think i’m royalty”
“you know i do”
“then stop bossing me around!”
and barda keeps a ‘shots fired’ tally between them (jasmine: 35 lief: 4)
jasmine: ugh, men are such babies
jasmine: *wakes up violently and accidentally smacks lief’s face* “oh, sorry! i thought you were-- oh. its you. well, that’s okay.”
the shadow lord begins to stir because he can feel deltoran magic returning
but like everyone else he believes jasmine is the heir
lief and barda try to teach jasmine how to be a royal
“if i can learn to do it/if he can learn to do it, then you can learn to do it”
turns out lief is actually much better at the whole royalty thing
he can remember names, history, events, etiquette; he can turn on the ‘royalty switch’ and become someone completely different and regal
slowly but surely he finds himself falling for this fierce green-eyed girl and he can try to fight it but nope
THE DANCING SCENE IM YELLING
jasmine’s an awful dancer but lief leads her through the steps and they do just fine
and for that sunset moment he forgets who they are. that he’s an orphaned street rat and she is likely a princess. that if she really is the heir then he will have to let her go
and just for a moment jasmine feels something for lief - she doesn’t know what it is but she doesn’t want to let him go
when they’ve stopped dancing and she feels their closeness, she almost leans in
almost
the shadow lord sends terrible nightmares after jasmine and lief pulls a sleepwalking jasmine away from a sea cliff as she’s seconds from jumping
and as he pulls a distraught jasmine from the edge of death and into his arms he begins to loathe himself for bringing her into this
he takes the nightmares as a sign that she really is the deltoran heir and somehow the shadow lord knows and he’s active once again
she doesn’t even want to be the queen; he knows that; but he’s put her through this and its his fault she’s had horrid nightmares because her identity is suspected; and he’s fallen head over heels but he can never have her
anyway
when they reach tora they have to go through lindal before they can see doom -- the man who was once a friend of the king and who has access to the belt of deltora to determine the true heir
lindal says doom won’t see anyone else because all these heir-claimers just want an excuse to see/try on/attempt to steal the belt of deltora
barda convinces her to let them be the last ones because ‘we think she’s the real deal’
when they come before doom he sees the girl they present as the heir and recognizes her as part of himself
but he also sees the boy behind her, the spitting image of his childhood best friend
doom pulls out the belt of deltora
the glittering belt is more magnificent then lief could have imagined
but why is doom putting it around lief and not jasmine
wait what
OH
the belt lights up and banishes the shadow lord’s forces that were rapidly closing in
tears and confusion abound as everyone tries to sort out exactly wtf is happening
barda, lindal, doom, jasmine, lief, all of them are in awe and shock of what they are witnessing
jasmine and doom cannot believe they found each other
lief, jasmine and barda can’t believe the true heir was lief all the time
the full weight of hit hits lief. he’s the king. he can have whatever he wants. but he can’t have jasmine. he refuses to ask her to stay because to have her would make her queen, the one thing she never wanted to be
and she found her family now, she can go live her life
but her father has returned to del, so she chooses to stay in del
not for lief -- but with lief
now, at last, they could begin

“Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and time again off-course, once he had plundered the hallow heights of Troy.”
- The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fagles
Tumblr media
[Image ID: From left to right is Sharn, Endon, and Lief. The border around the drawing is gold, divided into three sections and shapes with different shades of warm colors scattered around. On a dark blue backdrop, Sharn is wearing a light purple dress and a silver belt at her waist. One hand is level with the belt and the other is raised slightly, close to her face. She is looking to the right, a strained expression on her face. Her eyes are hazel and her skin is pale. In the middle with a dark red background is Endon. He has brown skin and is wearing a dark cloak with a dull green shirt, dark brown pants, and a grey belt. His eyes are brown and his salt-and-pepper hair is curly and long and tied back. He is wearing arm guards and his hands are held close to his chest. He is looking upwards, his teeth bared. Beside him with a grayish-yellow background is Lief, with brown skin and dark curly hair down just past his chin. He is wearing a light-colored shirt underneath a green tunic, with leather pants and a yellow belt. His body is turned slightly to the right and he is gripping a sword, looking ahead with a determined expression. /End ID]

Let’s Get Political
#TRUTH! The sorcerers of Tora feast & take their ease while all around them work and starve. Yet they demand our goodwill.
#TRUTH! Torans envy Del, because Del is home to Deltora’s ruling family. This forced our beloved Lady Sharn to leave us & dwell for months in Tora as hostage to Toran Pride.
#TRUTH! Tora’s treachery is proved by history. When the Shadow Lord invaded, Tora broke its oath of loyalty and allowed the Enemy to enslave us.
#TRUTH! King Lief, in the innocence & generosity of his youth, forgave the Torans for their treachery & allowed them to return to their enchanted city.
#TRUTH! Tora has repaid the king’s trust by plotting to destroy Del by stealth. The Toran plague proves it!
‘All its “truths” are lies!’ Jasmine exclaimed.
‘There is enough truth in most of them to deceive frightened people,’ Barda answered grimly.
...
[Lief] shook his head. ‘This notice is so stupid! It says it is going to prove that the Torans sent the plague to destroy Del. Then it says that the plague itself proves that the Torans are plotting to destroy Del. Where is the logic in that?’
‘There is none,’ said Barda, ripping the notice from the wall. ‘But those looking for someone to blame for their misfortune will not see that, I fear.’
The relevance to current events is awful, and the fact that I’m able to write enough to put things under a cut is even more awful.
First, Paff’s poster of #TRUTHS. Here, # is used as a fancy bullet point but by amazing coincidence, they resemble a Twitter hashtag (SotS was published 5 years before they were even a thing, and almost 10 years before it was a widespread term). It’s eerily reminiscent of Kellyanne Conway’s use of “alternative facts”.
As Jasmine points out, just because something is said to be true doesn’t mean that it is. This is the case both in SotS and real life, especially in our age of misinformation and fake news. However, pointing out that something is objectively false often isn’t enough to solve the issue.
Lies are stronger when they contain fragments of truth, manipulated to say things that the audience wants to hear. Here, the people of Del are suffering and want someone to blame; Paff gives one to them. The fact that the scapegoats are innocent (on the whole) is glossed over because the people of Del want to believe the so-called #truths, which play directly to the us vs. them mentality. Nobody wants to even think that the problem lies within their own territory. And as Barda notes, this still stands even in the face of cold hard logic.
A final thing to note is that even though the author of the poster appears to care about the people of Del, urging them to “awake”, she’s really utilising them to further her own interests. Even though the poster seems to come from a position of unity, all it really does is sow needless fear, opening the way for the Shadow Lord’s plan. Similarly, Trump’s election campaign encouraged division among Americans. The resultant pushback against immigrants, Muslims etc. (a worldwide trend, but I’m focusing on America) drove support to him, helping him along on one of the most out-of-hand ego trips in the world. And so he sits now in the White House, like Gellick gloating in Dread Mountain.
In more ways than one, I could probably do with some water from the Dreaming Spring.

beauty lies before you
Fandom: Deltora Quest Characters: Jasmine, Marilen, Doom (mentions of others) Summary: Sheltered by gentle Tora, Jasmine and Marilen reflect on life, love, and their futures. Post-Shadowlands. Note: This is the first non-rewrite/non-prompt I’ve written for the fandom in six years!  AO3. FFN.
--
Tora’s beauty was grand enough to draw even Jasmine under its spell. She had felt, after everything that had happened in the Shadowlands, that she deserved some peace. Once thoroughly charmed by the city, it was easy to compare it to Del’s relative drabness: The Toran room that she slept in was spacious, with windows that stretched from the floor to the ceiling, and looked down upon a small wood below; her room in the palace in Del was always dark and too high up to give her much of a view. The fruit that she ate every morning at dawn was sweet and crisp, and stained her lips red; the people of Del ate meat at almost every meal. The long robes that she wore were soft and smelled of flowers; the stink of sweat never seemed to come out of her clothing at home.
After their first week in Tora, she had told Doom of her comparisons, and he had laughed, though not unkindly.
“That is the magic of this place,” he told her with only the smallest trace of bitterness. “Take pleasure in it for now, but do not forget that you would not have such thoughts outside of the city.”
“I know how to tell what is real, and what is not,” she had snapped reflexively.
Doom’s lips parted and his face had appeared uncharacteristically stricken. She had frowned, and was about to ask him what was wrong, when she realized the weight of her own words.
“I do,” she insisted with a stubborn tilt of her chin.
“I know,” he had promised in a low voice. They had not spoken of the incident in the months that had since passed.
Afterwards, however, she began to notice how the light in the room often woke her before she was ready; how the food was too rich; how the flowing robes would slow her if she tried to run. And she missed Lief and Barda. Their presence had become a constant in her life, they were her family, and parting from them felt wrong. They had come for Marilen and Ranesh’s wedding the previous month, but had stayed only briefly. She spent much of her time with Doom, but he was often occupied with formally recording the research he had done on Adin’s line for the Toran archives. He was often eagerly assisted by Ranesh, who found it all fascinating, somehow. But she was not at all lonely, and for that she could thank the one person who shone brighter than any of the shining marble towers.
Everybody adored Marilen. And how could they not? She was clever and kind and the sound of her laughter was infectious. Jasmine had been uncertain if the other woman would like her, but becoming her friend had been as easy as tree-climbing. They amused themselves with playing games and telling stories and taking long walks through Tora’s lush gardens.
One early morning, Marilen had surprised Jasmine at her bedroom door with a basket filled with apples, fresh bread, and the light honey cakes she knew Jasmine loved.
“Come with me,” she said merrily. “We will take our breakfast in the garden.”
An interesting thing about people, Jasmine had discovered, was that they would often do things not because they had to, but simply because they wanted to. So she agreed, and left Filli and Kree to doze.
Marilen had come prepared. She led Jasmine to a garden tangled with bright flowers of all sizes and shapes, and laid out a fine sheet for them to sit on. Jasmine, accustomed though she was to feeling the ground underneath her body, was touched by the gesture. They chatted aimlessly as the day brightened, until Marilen suddenly placed a hand on Jasmine’s knee.
“I’m so happy that you are here,” she said with a sweet smile. “I already know how hard it will be when you leave.”
Jasmine laughed through a mouthful of cake. “Do not fear. We do not intend to return to Del for some time.”
“I must visit when you do. And I know Ranesh misses Josef.”
Jasmine leaned back on her hands and watched the wind rustle through the leaves that canopied above them. “But do you wish to go back to Del so soon? I would have thought you would be pleased to be here, and free from duty.”
“My duty follows me where ever I go,” Marilen said dryly. “I was relieved when Lief returned from the Shadowlands. Of course, because it meant he was safe, but also because ruling Deltora would not fall to me. Being Lief’s heir is my duty, and I will not step away from it, until he has children. But I have no wish to rule.”
Jasmine shook her head. “I think you would make a very great queen.”
Marilen smiled thoughtfully. “As will you, I believe.”
Jasmine’s heart leapt into her throat and she looked at her hands so that her friend would not see the flush of her cheeks. The words Lief had said upon their return from the Shadowlands echoed in her mind. They often did, as they were carved into her heart. But marrying Lief was one thing, becoming Deltora’s queen was quite another.
“Oh, do not be ashamed,” Marilen laughed gently, and took Jasmine’s hand, mistaking her silence for embarrassment. Marilen’s fingers were longer than hers, and her skin was soft against Jasmine’s calloused palms. “Lief is a very lucky man, indeed. Being in love is a beautiful thing; I am glad to know it. I had never felt it before I went to your city.”
Your city. Not long ago, Jasmine would have rejected claiming Del as her own. But now she had welcomed it, as it had welcomed Marilen. Somewhere, sometime, she had begun to think of it as her home.
Jasmine trailed her fingers across the sheet. “If my parents had done as they had planned, Tora would have been my city, too.”
Marilen turned ever so slightly so that she faced the city centre, where the oath stone lay. The breeze stirred her dark hair. “It is strange, is it not? How tied to each other we all are. It seems like fate, to me.”
It was a pleasant thought. So many awful things had transpired among their friends and families, but the thought of them all being connected to each other was comforting. Marilen seemed to nearly read her mind.
“I am pleased to be tied to this family, though,” Marilen continued. “Sharn was worried for me, I think. I do not know that I have met anyone else who cares so deeply about those she loves. She approves, of course, but at first she seemed think Ranesh and I were moving too fast. She came around quickly, but her hesitance seemed odd to me. She and Endon had an arranged marriage, and I hear that they loved each other very much.”
Jasmine thought of the locket Sharn kept, with Endon’s handsome face. She did not believe that Sharn feared Marilen did not know what she wanted; or doubted her strength. What she likely feared was that Marilen did not know what she had to lose. “What do you think?”
Marilen tilted her chin up with self-taught defiance. “I spent nearly seventeen years in a haze. Now that I am free, I will make the most of my life. Damn the consequences.”
From Marilen’s appearance and mannerisms, it was so easy to forget that she was really more than twice Jasmine’s age. She did know what she had to lose, and yet she made gambles anyway. Jasmine grinned in delight at her friend’s ferocity. She recalled, then, a blurry memory of a sunny day in the Forests. Her mother had said something that had made her father laugh, and he had pulled her close and kissed her mouth. She pictured Lief’s eager smile, and the look on his face when ever he watched her speak. Marilen was right: love was beautiful, even when it hurt.
“So, you would say,” Jasmine began awkwardly. “If you love someone, you should act upon it, even if it means taking a risk?”
“Yes,” Marilen said gently. “And I do mean it, Jasmine. You are clever, brave, and just. Deltora will flourish when you are its queen.”
Jasmine met Marilen’s gaze with solemn eyes. “Thank you,” she said heavily. “When we first restored the Belt, I was mistaken for the heir. I felt as if I would rather die than be queen. But that is no longer what I think. You speak of duty, and I understand. It will be mine, when I am ready.”
“I have no doubts,” Marilen’s smile returned. “And nor should you.”
Jasmine looked at her friend’s trusting face, and felt so much lighter. She tossed her hair, embarrassed that she had been so open with her feelings. “Forget all this talk of duty. We have the rest of our lives for that. I am happy for now to enjoy the sun on my face, and your company.”
Marilen moved closer, so that their shoulders bumped against each other. “That sounds wonderful, to me.”
--
Okay, this is plotless and disjointed, but I really, really just wanted to make them talk. I love all the women in this series so much. Many high fantasy writers tend to shove their female characters into specific, stifling tropes, and they need to take a page from Rodda.
