We specialize in taking non certified divers, or first time shark divers, into the exciting world of sharks. Shark Diving For Everyone is our commitment to showcase the incredible world of white sharks with a combination of 18 years of cage diving experience, a cage system designed exclusively for non divers, top notch shark staff and cage diving crews with years of hands on shark experience. We have been cage diving and naming many of the white sharks you’ll be diving with this year. From the incredible 19+ foot Deep Blue, most likely the largest great white shark in the Pacific, to many of our regular white sharks like Scarboard, Lucy, and Mau. These amazing animals have become more than just whites sharks to us as we encounter them year after year – we met Scarboard 16 years ago – they have become our sharky friends.

Guadalupe Island White Shark Research

In 2003 we initiated the CICIMAR/U.C Davis white shark tagging and research program at Isla Guadalupe with a young graduate student Mauricio Hoyos. Today, almost 15 years later, Dr Maurico Hoyos leads International teams of shark researchers to this unique destination to tag and study the lives of great white sharks in the Pacific. Our crew has been involved in many of these projects including the groundbreaking  REMUS Woods Hole Oceanographic autonomous drone study that showed, for the first time, actual deep water predation by great white sharks. Shark tagging at Guadalupe Island has shown symbiotic relationships with seals in the region, and long distance migrations by some of our larger females as far away as the Oregon coast!

Additionally, we have been involved from the early inception of the Marine CSI photo identification book and SPOT tagging efforts. Many of the Guadalupe Island white sharks named in the book were named by our divers and crews since 2003. The cage dive debate part 7 _________________________ Watch the entire episode at whitesharkvideo.com/sharkminutes ____________________________ Money may or may not be the primary motivation behind the cage dive industry operators, but regardless of the motivation, they results are the same; protection for the sharks. Some of the first cage diver operators in South Africa were instrumental in getting the animal protected (South Africa became the first country to list white sharks as a protected species in 1991). In contrast to criticism for money being the motivation for saving the animals, it's people with ample money who might be the biggest threat to these animals; trophy hunters. Consider the behavior of today's terrestrial trophy hunters and ask yourself why the same thing won't happen at white shark aggregation sites in the ocean? But why does the cage dive industry need to own this responsibility? Good question. @sdmdiving answers questions about shark ecotourism endangering people. Clip 1 of 3. The "Facebook Shark Experts" continue to declare the dangers that shark ecotourism pose, so I presented a few of these arguments to a well known, and very experienced shark diver, Elie Eli Martinez. The specific example he provides in the interview is exceptionally interesting. Personally, I've been diving with sharks for fifteen years and their "shyness" continues to be a bit of a frustration on many dives since I am hoping to film them. Sometimes I find myself thinking, "I wish sharks were even half as aggressive to humans as some people claim them to be. It's only the beginning of the fight. Should government agencies be actively responsible for patrolling and protecting white shark hot spots? Or will this responsibility fall on the shoulders of a private organization such as Sea Shepherd? The Navy isn't going to do it. Taking another 60 second look at Guadalupe we focus on the temperature. Above and below the surface things are very nice. I wouldn't call the water warm, but South Africa and Guadalupe are the only two places I've gotten in a cage without a wetsuit for any amount of time. South Africa comes in second because you can only do this in South Africa's summer and your time in the cage is much shorter than in Guadalupe; I don't think it would be fair to compare 20 minutes in a cage to four hours. Because you can stay in the water so long in Guadalupe most people where a wetsuit in order to preserve their body temperature. This is particularly important when going into deeper water with the submersible cage where you can definitely feel the temperature drop. Furthermore the weight harnesses are heavy enough that it's nice to have the wetsuit as a buffer. WSV's Ultimate Cage Dive Destination Guide also includes "x-factor" pros and cons about each destination. For example, the RIDE to the Farallon Islands is, in itself, an attraction. A cruise through the San Francisco Bay passing landmarks such as Alcatraz the city skyline, Bay Bridge, and going under the Golden Gate Bridge is all conveniently included since the trips depart from the SF Bay. In addition, many species of whale and dolphin can be see on the way to and from the islands. BUT, while the trip to the islands is a pro, it is simultaneously a con. 27 miles straight out from San Francisco, this stretch of water takes over three hours to cross and is easily the roughest of all the rides to any of the cage dive destinations of the world that I've been to. You should still go, but be ready to lean over the rail and "feed the fish."
