I don't know for sure but I think it's a fanfic term sort of like hurt/comfort, but the emphasis is on the hurt and probably without much comfort. Like the whole point of a whump fic is to get at least one character really super fucked up.

You know how the word 'whump' would probably appear in a comic when a character is punched or slammed? Something like that, I think.
