Finally realised I get two types of phantom shark tail — one is your typical lemon shark tail, while the other is a blåhaj tail that is a lot harder to move around and very floppy.

I’m not quite sure what this means, but I shall be investigating further.

There is a possibility my Natural History Museum and/or ghost kintypes are causing this, because I do occasionally feel like a taxidermy bird because of them.

One thing that has a surprising influence on my ’types is my interest in taxonomy/cladistics.

The way humans have chosen to split organisms into different species, genera, families etc. has influenced the way I communicate, and therefore perceive (on some level), my identities.

For example, the boundaries of my shark heart-type are clear-cut. Though I am fascinated by them, I feel no personal connection to species such as Tiger Sharks and Thresher Sharks. It is a different story when it comes to Whitetip Reef and Bull Sharks, even though they look as dissimilar as Tigers and Threshers at first glance. In fact, they even belong to different genera. Still, my heart-type encompasses the entire Requiem Shark family.

Ironically, I believe this system of categorisation is “arbitrary”, for lack of better word. Though it has proved to be a beneficial system, I do not think it describes the nature of life accurately. (Speciation is a never-ending process, and it is difficult to confirm populations’ inability to reproduce, especially if they are allopatric.) An aspect of my therianthropy is rooted in this belief.

Hot take, I really don’t think we should assign human morals onto animals and call them bad or evil. Fishblr has internalised this idea really well with sharks, and I think that’s good! Sharks don’t deserve all the fearmongering they suffer from in media. But… can we please remember to extend this to other animals too? Even to intelligent animals like dolphins (most commonly bottlenose dolphins) and orcas. It seems to be a counter to pop culture’s tendency to show dolphins as complete angels when they partake in some messed up things, but like…. Dolphins are still animals? They may be able to recognize themselves in mirrors and they may have language and culture and know how to use tools but their intelligence is still on the level of a human child (and how empathetic are those!!??). I see people talk about how evil dolphins are but I never see people talking about other animals the same way, like, why aren’t sea otters and their “evilness” the topic of discussion? :/

Fun fact: Hammerhead sharks are exceptional at playing hide-and-sea-k. 🙈🏃

A hammerhead’s eyes are located at the extreme ends of its very wide head — giving it a fintastic field of vision. They can see above, below, and even behind them! 👀

If that wasn’t enough of an advantage, they also have special electroreceptors (called ampullae of Lorenzini) that can sense weak electrical fields created by the muscular movements of prey — even one as invisible as the beating heart of an animal hidden in the sand.

Day 16: Courtship

Had a fantastic time swimming today! I don’t often get the chance to, and this time round I was especially shift-y. Swimming in the shark-typical, side-to-side motion feels amazing. (Though I’m now questioning a potential crocodilian kintype now, since I noticed I often swim similarly to them. I also had a lot of fun jump-scaring the people with me by submerging all but my face in the murky water.)

I was also given the chance to jump in from a very tall boat, which satisfied both my bird therian needs for flight and aspects of my Luca-self.

I’ve been being eaten away at by devil eyes brain rot for a while now and even though it’s not may anymore

What if devil eyes eclipse was like, a mer creature of some sort?

And what would he be?

Devil Eyes Eclipse would be a tiger shark mer! He is large with long fins and a long tail. He has a light-yellow underbelly with currant red skin and striking dark stripes across his entire body. His teeth are terrifyingly distinct with terribly sharp, pronounced serrations. He can locate prey (or mer Y/N) with electroreceptors which allows him to detect electric fields, including the weak electrical impulses generated by his prey. Oh, and did I mention he's a solitary, nocturnal hunter?

Since I'm already here, I'll toss in Devil Eyes Sun and Moon mers as well!

Moon is a blue shark mer. He prefers cool waters and is generally lethargic, but he can move very quickly. He has long fins and a long tail just like his brother Eclipse but is slightly smaller. His skin is midnight blue with small spots of baby blue while his underside is white. He's a cold-blooded mer and has a unique sense of smell which he uses to avoid other mers and keep him and Sun safe while they wait for Eclipse. He's also memorized Mer Y/N's sense and is still deciding whether he likes how pretty you smell. (He grows anxious whenever he smells your blood, blood on Eclipse, or both at once.)

Sun is a shortfin mako shark. He's the same size as Moon but slightly smaller than Eclipse with long fins (despite taking after a shortfin) and a long tail. He possesses a brilliant yellow color on top and a white underside. He's very agile and swift which makes him an incredibly fast swimmer, and he can leap to extreme heights out of the water. He maintains a body temperature that is warmer than the surrounding waters which he has used on the occasion to keep mer Y/N warm in the cold sea. He doesn't do well sitting tight in one spot and will often venture out to scout and scan the area for dangers or watch for Eclipse coming back to them.
