for shan yu, you are his destiny. for you, he is the man that kidnapped you. love at first sight is a tale as old as time. he just didn't expect you wouldn't believe in it.
cw: love at first sight. meet cute. public nudity. accidental voyeurism. murder couple in the making. yandere. kidnapping. shan "i'll make you my empress" yu x fem!reader "what's your name?". in this house we hate the misogynist version of Shan Yu in Mulan (2020).
an: rip moon you would've loved hearing nu metal while doing the dishes. also my favorite dinamic is war criminal x someone that would have the time of their live being a nun.

The wind howled against his ears. Trees spoke in their ancient language. Silently, the world continue to move. Harmonic in its apparent chaos, carefully built even in its broken pieces, the world continued to be.
It was quiet there. Not maddening as the silence of soldiers well aware of their wrongdoings. Not numb as the moment right before a battle. Not debilitating as his sleepless, lonely midnights.
It was quiet there in the mountains, but not still. The world wasn't holding its breath, muscles clenching in tension or fear. It was what it has always been: uncaring, an indiferent witness to mankind.
Man can die, man can kill. The wind will keep on howling either way.
Marching forward in the monster's belly, he thought. A battle against time. An unstoppable war against the inevitable end.
Stupidly feverish, Shan Yu then admitted to himself. He ignored as his body plead for rest, instead riding his horse away from comfort. Shan Yu is the one to blame for his boiling mind and those irrational, melancolic thoughts.
Following an old path hidden by trees, Shan Yu travelled deeper into the mountains. The cut on his forearm throbbed. It would need new bandages, he could feel the blood drying against his sore skin.
Still, Shan Yu chose the ruthlessness of the mountain and whispers of a tired mind rather than the bought hospitality of an warm inn. More so, he chose silence over chaos.
He needed to think. To plan.
His armies invaded China. Battle after battle, they were always victorious. Now they understand this place. His generals trained soldiers with new formations that fit this land better. But real victory isn't as near as Shan Yu would want to.
His army is at disadvantage. They are in the enemy's territory. They are the ones moving forward instead of defending what they already own. They are the ones making arrangements with villages because a war this long means more food, more water, more time.
Shan Yu left his army behind, allowing them to celebrate. It was a good deal with the village's leader, whom only desire was to keep his people safe. He need his man confident, excited with the prospects of war. Let the alcohol soothe their minds, they earned it.
Alone, facing the place he must conquer, Shan Yu could deal with the stratagems. Challenged, he must find a way to humiliate the Emperor. To make even his own people turn their backs on him.
A sneeze made the strategist give place to the warrior.
The horse stopped with the pressure of his feet. Still as stone, Shan Yu searched for the source of it. He wasn't being followed. That he knows. This can't be a trap. At least not a good one.
He jumped to the ground, hand already searching for his jagged jian. He stopped at the handle, not wanting the steel to reflect light and warn his enemy. It was time to hunt.
Following his instincts, he wandered between the trees. His feet were light on the ground. This threat won't be able to gasp before he attacks.
He found a river bank surrounded by stones. No signs of an ambush. He couldn't smell anything strange in the air, only the... No. Shan Yu stopped moving. He felt something sweet. A strong perfume in the air.
Shan Yu glared at the river, now unsure of what he was looking for. Maybe it wasn't a trap. After all, that's not an important village. No soldiers or officers live here. Maybe this old hidden path isn't as old or as hidden as he thought. Maybe he's hunting something that simply isn't aware of him.
Then he noticed. Clothes folded in the river bank, a towel spread on a stonr, a basket half-filled with shells and stones.
Deep into the river, your fingers brushed against a shell. You grabbed it, and checked if anything lived inside of it yet. It was a few inches bigger than your hand, and in a beautiful shade of green.
A cold breeze welcomed you to the surface. You took a deep breath, shaking your head and getting the water away from your eyes. Your face felt like it was burning, but you know the cold was causing it.
You cleaned the shell, brushing your fingers against the mud stucked inside it. It really was a beautiful shade of green. Brighter than you could see underwater.
Absolutely perfect for your collection. All other green shells you've ever found had crustaceans living inside of them, and you would never leave them without a home. This one will make it all even more special.
You laughed to youself, observing all its details. You continued to explore the surface, crossing the river a few more times. You knew it like the palm of your hand. Maybe even better than your own bedroom.
You can be bored, overwhelmed, exhausted: this place solves it easily. Its silence involves your brain, and its water washes over the very fabric of your soul. You can feel it. The knots coming lose, the tissue shining, each thread becoming softer.
Shan Yu released the handle of his jian when you emerged, froze in place as his eyes followed your every movement. As if cursed, his body wasn't his to control anymore. Immovable muscles, unstoppable heart. His worries were shut down, any hardship simply erased from his usually sharp memory.
Moonlight blinded him for an instant. No, it was you. Your light was that bright. Was he seeing your soul? Brighter than the moon, as enebriating as barley, more soothing than popy.
Your light casts no shadow.
Were you a witch? A sorceress dominating his body and mind, sinking Shan Yu into a trance he would never want to get out of. Or were you a siren? Luring him into the water, waiting for the perfect chance to bite his heart out of his chest.
He can't believe you're any of those. None could be half as beautiful as you. A nymph. Only that could explain your beauty.
He admire you. The old scar on your knees, stretch marks on your waist, freckles on your back. The way your eyes shone as you collected your shells, how your body moved as if the water wasn't an obstacle but a path made for you to follow.
It was so cold, but that didn't stopped you from doing what you wanted. It takes a certain hunger to do something you desire despite the world around you. For now, deep into the mountains, you were free.
Your laugh made him forget about everything. That sound was deserving of a thousand praises. People should dedicate their lifes for the chance of witnessing you blossoming.
A small price for such a great gift.
But you sneezed, and that woke up Shan Yu from his trance. He was reminded of where he was and who he is. Of how cold it was. Shan Yu looked at your clothes again. Such a light tissue would never fully protect you. Unlike his fur.
Unlike him.
With a storm for a heart, Shan Yu approached. Glaring at your back, he purposely stepped on a branch.
Part of you hoped to be surprised by an animal, but you knew someone was standing behind you. You couldn't see who was there, but you knew someone not looking for trouble wouldn't be there.
It's fair ground then.
"If you want to approach me, do it", you whispered. You didn't need to be any louder to be heard. Your fingers clenched around the shell you were studying, aware the only thing stopping it from being a weapon was your intent. "But I am not fazed by blood."
A chuckled was heard. A man, of course it was. What surprised you was to hear him walking away.
You turned around, but all you saw was the stranger's back as he dissapeared among the trees. Folded over your clothes, you found a wolf fur coat. You hesitate before brushing your wet fingers against it. It was so warm and soft.
Warm, soft and real.
You were quick to get out of the river, drying yourself with a towel. You put on your clothes, took the basket and ran towards the old path you made sure to hide with stones. Apparently not everyone was deceived by it.
A scream came out of your throat as you bumped into someone. Your basket fell on the ground as a familiar hand squeezed your shoulder.
"Mom", you whispered. You blinked, trying to stop yourself from feeling... whatever it was that you were feeling. You gave her your brightest smile, kneeling down to grab all your things. "I know it's late, I was already heading back home."
That earned you a hiss. You did your best to hold the smile. "You're trembling", she said. "I've warned you. You'll get sick."
"I won't", you said. "I promise."
She bit back a smile. So calm, so full of certain. Making promises you can't possibly keep, and somehow keeping them anyway.
"You better", she took the basket from your hand, looking at your new findings. "Your father already has enough patients as it is."
Going back home was always the worst part, but even there you could feel the cage closing around you. One thing is to be alone at the river, other to be lonely at your home. There nothing can distract you from thinking until your mind is far away from this village.
Instead of walking forward, you glanced back.
Part of you knew he would be there. Like a ghost at the corner of your eyes. It still chocked you to see his sillhouet there, a blurr in the darkness, right where you left the coat.
Now, you were the one observing him. Trying to understand him. Had he stayed there, hidden somewhere to observe you after his gift? Or did he heard your scream, and only then decided to come back?
You forced yourself to move away. Your mother could never see him. It would be the end of your free evenings if she ever discovered you were naked, futhermore if she even dreamed a man was near.
Unaware of your curious gaze, Shan Yu brushed the mark of your wet fingers on his coat. It got your attention, earned your touch, gained the sweet perfume of your skin. It was a gift, and one you so politely declined.
As if a saint would ever accept anything coming from a conqueror. "Now that is a challenge."
Back at the inn, Shan Yu was a new man. Maybe it was your laugh. Perhaps your freedom. Now, Shan Yu wasn't worrying anymore.
He already knew what to do.
⋆✦⋆
A scream woke you up.
You pulled the blanket away from your sweaty body, hands trembling as you moved. Surrounded by darkness, your heart beating so loud you could feel it twitching on your ears, you sat on the bed and faced the darkness surrounding you.
A nightmare. Squeezing the fabric of your nightgown, you tried to force yourself to calm down. Don't allow it to consume you, you thought. Be good, be quiet.
They were gone for a while now. It's been a few weeks since you last woke up at midnight, silence devouring you alive, searching for a comfort that just wasn't there. After a lifetime of nights filled with terror, you saw the anesthetized sleep as a good omen.
Should you see this night as a bad one?
Part of you hoped to be proven wrong. With your fingers brushing against your lips, you wonded if you really screamed in your sleep. In worse nights, worse times, you would wake up to your father holding you down. He isn't there, your house is silent.
Everything is fine.
But hope is a treacherous thing. So easily it lift you up to your feet, so quickly it shoves you down on the ground again.
Of course you father isn't holding you down. Of course your house is silent. Of course you feel alone. It's because you are.
A messenger came a few hours ago. Someone was injured. If they didn't bring the girl there, the reason was obvious: it was so bad they were afraid to move her. And if your parents aren't home already, then it is worse than you have imagined.
You hugged yourself. You know that being alone in that house is the first step for your mind to break you. You would start to think about this place, about your old home, and soon your mind would worry about the place you need to go when he is back.
If he comes back. After this war is over, will you have a husband you despise or a funeral to attend? A husband you dislike is easy to deal with, specialy if he comes back sick and tired. To find another one is worse: they might chose one you hate.
Steps made you stop worrying. Your heard the gate swing open, and that made you walk barefeet to the entrance of your home. Brushing your eyes, you noticed a shadow getting closer to the main door. They're home now.
For now, all you wanted was to not be alone anymore. "I had another nightmare", you spoke while sliding the door open, aware they could hear you from the other side. "Is she dead?"
Instead of what you expected, you saw him.
His golden gaze felt so heavy on your skin. The tall man, surrounded by darkness as if it was his to command, covered by fur and smelling like steel and iron. His sword glistened, his teeth too.
You felt like a prey. A sleepy rabbit facing a hungry wolf. His gaze reminded you of a predator, a cruel one playing with its meal.
Then you saw the eagle on his broad arm. That made you aware of his name. Oh, how you head the whispers. A man surrounded by death and blood. The bearer of destruction and fear. Leader of an army with a single duty: to break China apart.
"No one died tonight", Shan Yu whispered, somehow apologetic. As if he was an unexpected visitor with a good reason to surprise you, not a wild man that appeared in the middle of the night armed while you're alone. "You had another nightmare?"
You should've screamed. You should've ran away from him. But instead, understanding the only thing keeping Shan Yu from being violent is his desire to do so, you looked into his eyes and pretended to be fine. "What do you seek here?"
Closer, Shan Yu discovered he was wrong about you. The light inside your eyes was a mistake of his. They're on fire. Burning inside you, you soul warmed him.
"Your heart", Shan Yu answered, taking a step back. "Care to join me?"
You glared at the open gates, then at his eyes again. You waited for a manic laugh, a mean gaze, anything that showed the violence implicit on his words. If it was there, your eyes didn't catch it.
A hun after a chinese. A man oathed to destroy your nation asking for your heart. Maybe a few years ago when you were young and stupid this could almost sound like a fairytale. You know how to name this situation: spoil of war.
"You said no one died tonight", your throat burned. "But if I don't follow you... someone will, right?"
It took him a second, but the true meaning of your words hit Shan Yu like a poisoned arrow. "I wasn't threatening you", he started to clarify his intentions, but you stepping forward shut him.
Shan Yu saw anger on your eyes, disgust on the curl of your lips. Violence fits you heavenly. "But you will hurt others", how dry you sounded. Heartless. But he could see the truth behind it all. You were about to explode, but couldn't allow yourself to. "I rather not see this village burn like the others you passed by."
Shan Yu takes what he wants, claims what he desire, get rid of what doesn't fit his goals. But you're not a thing to be possessed. You're a person. A person that shines and burns. He can't take your love from you. Shan Yu can only hope for it.
Shan Yu wants to earn you.
"You will be my empress", he declared. "My heart is yours. I will wait until you feel the same. I won't touch you unless you allow me. I will protect your honor, defend your body and mind."
You chuckled. "Shan Yu, do you really believe in love at first sight?"
"Moon, I will give you China as a dowry", was his answer.
Your name coming out of his mouth made shivers run down your spine. You sighed. "You won't give up, will you?"
He wouldn't. Shan Yu would never.

Mulan (1998) 8/10
Tumblr media
In a desperate attempt to spare her ailing father, Fa Mulan disguises herself as a man to take his place during the Huns' war on China.
This is actually the second time I've seen this movie, and it's been YEARS since I saw it the first time.
The film immediately dives into the stereotypical traits between man and woman: note the culture too, that Asian people are thought of as submissive, particularly the women.
Mulan is a tomboy; she doesn't want to be married off, and she struggles with the values that a woman should have in this society (in society in general, really, if you think about it): be meek, be quiet in a man's presence, be graceful, and your only purpose is to have children, have a small waist, etc etc.
Remember the time that this film is set in as well, so the sexist jokes are more subtle.
Despite all the sexism this movie gears towards women, Eddie Murphy's Mushu is the comedic relief. He's witty, he's clever, and he's just trying to gain redemption by helping Mulan out and making her a hero. The ancestors of Mulan don't like him because he's gotten some of the ancestors in trouble.
The soundtrack is great, everyone has heard 'I'll Make A Man Out Of You' before, and 'A Girl Worth Fighting For' is also catchy.
The plot is interesting, and complex too; it's not just Mulan's story, it's also Mushu's, and Li Shang, the captain of the newest recruits. All of them are trying to prove something to themselves, that they deserve the position they are in, that they have adversities but they're willing to fight for them.
In a way, this film could also inspire others to fight for themselves too.

My latest completed commission may have been a bit ambitious... because I went wild with it. But I certainly relished in doing so :') Combining my favorite ship with my favorite-ever Disney movie is, uh... a dangerous concoction :'D
The commissioner specifically requested for Azula as Mulan, Sokka as Shang, and Xin Long (my OC dragon from Gladiator) as Mushu. The rest of the cast was up to me to choose, and I pretty much went wild rewatching this movie and picking out some of my favorite moments to recreate them in my style, with these characters. I came up with a lot of correlating characters between both ATLA and 1998's Mulan, but I couldn't hope to draw EVERYTHING, unfortunately. Still, if you want my reasoning for the cast correlation... check out the Read More! Beyond that, feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to commission me, or if you want to join my Patreon!
The Herbalist as Mulan's grandmother might feel arbitrary but she honestly felt like the ATLA elderly lady with the most similar personality to Grandma Fa. Fickle, with a unique connection with a seemingly perfectly ordinary animal, old and sassy? Figured it fit! So for once, the Herbalist is Azula's grandma! xD strange notion, I know, Azulon/Herbalist is not a ship I ever thought I'd accidentally put out in the world but there have been wilder ships than that in this fandom...
Momo became Cri-Kee, I wasn't 100% sold on it but when I considered that Avatar features soooo many hybrid animals... I figured he could be a hybrid cricket-lemur. Weird, I know, but eh? Better than nothing xD
Aang as Chien-Po was a no-brainer. He's the only character I settled on instantly, never even considered anyone else for the role. Their personalities line up really well, and Chien-Po's tendency to be OP and resolve things that are outside of other people's reach sounded like he was prime Avatar material! So, while their dietary preferences are an obvious difference between them, I decided to go for it nonetheless considering all their other similarities!
Kino (another Gladiator OC) is Ling, and he actually did give me a ton of trouble to choose. I considered many characters for the role right up until I realized that Kino's personality actually lines up fairly well with Ling's, down to being a class clown type (who ABSOLUTELY would have cut gym class!) and breaking out in song about the hypothetical woman he'd like to fight for? Yeeeeah that's right up his alley xD but there's another reason why I picked Kino...
... And that is my likely unexpected choice for Yao:
ZUKO.
ZUKO IS YAO.
YES.
I'M NOT EVEN SORRY.
(For the uninitiated, Aang, Zuko and Kino are best friends in Gladiator, very often together, and they make a really good team, so that's the extra reason why Kino became the obvious choice for Ling aside from having really similar personalities, definitely closer personalities than, say, Jet, for instance.)
People have likened Zuko to Shang a LOT since ATLA aired. This is the main reason why I'm even making this huge note! I suspect it's primarily because of the aesthetic, let's be real here, and because he becomes Aang's teacher, but people have exaggerated Zuko's alleged similarities with Shang, or taken them out of proportion, in many ways. I actually remember an AMV ages ago with "Be a Man" and it was Zuko "training the Gaang"?? It... didn't feel right to me. Obviously, someone might rebuff with "well, how does Sokka make MORE sense than that, though?" And believe it or not, I have arguments for that... (when do I not...?)
Not only is this what the commissioner specifically requested (and it obviously lines up with the ship we love!), but let's examine the actual reasons why Sokka as Shang adds up:
Sokka actually had to train a bunch of toddlers who weren't paying any attention to him. You know. Kind of how Shang had to train the unruly soldiers who weren't getting anything right. Sokka has a positive relationship with his dad (Zuko, ofc, does not). Shang also has a positive relationship with his dad! And not only this, but there's a military component to both relationships, specifically with Shang wanting to follow on his father's footsteps and aid him in the war... so much like someone else I know, who jumped at every opportunity to rejoin his father in the war, even wishing to join him as a child until Hakoda tasked him with protecting their Tribe instead (kinda like Shang is tasked with training soldiers rather than joining a battlefield).
And the final cherry-on-top that I'd loooove to hear Zuko fans try to argue against... is sexism :') didn't Sokka get characterized as a sexist guy for four episodes, which made people decide that this was his main character trait even if it went away that quickly? Um, yes, that happened. Shang literally sings the memorable song that's a crazy ode to masculinity, including the rather sexist line of "did they send me daughters when I asked for sons". Shang outright abandons Mulan once they discover that she was a woman all along (while, admittedly, choosing to abandon her rather than KILL HER, which as we saw from Chi-Fu, he was NOT supposed to spare her!)...
So, is this REALLY what Zuko fans, who willfully believe their boy is a feminist king (... why? beats me...) are trying to compare their unproblematic blorbo to? :'D Me? I have no problem linking Sokka with Shang due to Sokka's beginnings and due to the fact that both Shang and Sokka have similar growth when it comes to accepting femininity is as valid as masculinity, and as they both learn to respect women as fighters and potential heroes! (I simply do not believe Sokka's ENTIRE tenure in ATLA was about that, though, and that's what I continue to clash with the fandom over...) So... all this is why I've reasoned that Sokka is a VERY solid choice for Shang, in fact, better than Zuko could hope to be.
... but this isn't all.
Maybe some might accept my arguments for Sokka-Shang. And then, they might ask:
WHY ZUKO AS YAO, THO??
... And the truth is it took me long to see it, myself, but HOLY SHIT, DOES IT FIT!
What is the primary thing we remember about Yao in Mulan? This guy is constantly itching for a fight, to prove himself, surely riddled with insecurities that he exteriorizes through overcompensation of masculinity. He's funny as fuck, but he's taking himself 100% seriously as a manly man all the time, and he's always ready for violence. But there's one more thing...
He treats Mulan as his RIVAL.
And more often than not? SHE SCREWS HIM OVER. Intentionally or not.
What does that sound like? Why, yes, it sounds a LOT like Azula and Zuko's sibling relationship!
The fact that Yao is a temperamental dude who lashes out easily at things (oh, something he has in common with Zuko!), that he specifically resents Mulan (in this case, Azula, just as Zuko does!) and is either constantly looking to defeat her and prove his superiority over her (... wait, just as Zuko with Azula??), that he has a black eye perpetually across the movie, and it's his LEFT EYE (just as Zuko's scar is on his left eye! :'D), that he's friends with a pacifist he has basically nothing in common with, personality-wise (just like Zuko and Aang!), and that he pretty much has a REDEMPTION ARC in which he goes from a bitter, asshole rival to Mulan to treating her as a friend and ally, to the point where he was disappointed to leave her behind and THEN joined her at once when she says she has a plan? :') I have always been critical of Zuko's redemption arc, goes without saying. But if ANY of these characters redeemed himself in any significant way, it certainly seems to be Yao to me, and with people gushing NON-STOP about Zuko's redemption? Why, he ought to be the character who goes from bitter rival to loyal friend, right?
So. I'm not even sorry. Zuko is Yao. And I'd dare say that he should be flattered by the comparison, even, because Yao ends up being cool as FUCK!
I don't really talk about this much nowadays, but Mulan was my favorite Disney movie growing up, it ABSOLUTELY had a formative influence on me as a little girl, and Mulan was my favorite female character for a looooong time. Thus, any excuse to rewatch this movie makes me happy as heck. With the wisdom of age I know, of course, that it's not perfect, it's not what China wants, it's not the most thoughtful depiction of Chinese culture or the most faithful adaptation of Mulan's poem (... but I'd also dare bring up that the 2009 Chinese adaptation ISN'T all that faithful either...), but it has a kind of magic in it, a solid storytelling flow, so many memorable moments one after the next, that I could hardly choose which scenes to depict... Disney has never again seen the storytelling heights it reached with Mulan in 1998. I don't even care if that's a controversial opinion in any way... this is their best animated feature for me, and nobody can change my mind.
So... depicting Azula, my beloved, in all these scenarios as this character I adored and idolized as a child, was so damn fulfilling for me. While some might think that, personality-wise, these two ladies don't have much in common, the fact that Mulan is sent to a matchmaker who basically tells her she looks good but is going to be the worst wife ever...? Our girl Azula, with all those insecurities about being unloveable and a monster, probably would relate big time to that.
Mulan is also an INTELLIGENT soldier rather than a brawny one, which is how she starts to make progress in the army, it's how she manages to overcome the huns with that avalanche... and Azula's primary difference with most other antagonists in ATLA is that she's smart as fuck. She is very strong, no doubt, but a LOT of that strength comes from her intelligence, from assessing situations in unique ways, from planning and strategizing. The way Mulan finds the most unexpected solutions that still pay off reminds me a lot of how Azula achieves unexpected feats through rather unorthodox means, capable of taking over a city with basically no bloodshed while her nation has spent 100 years trying and failing to do so through major army incursions and who knows how much senseless violence. Obviously, I'm not saying what Azula did is GOOD and it's kind of dumb that we always have to point that out... I'm merely comparing the magnitude of the feats, and the fact that they both come from ladies who use strategy and intelligence to achieve their goals rather than muscle and physical power.
And while anyone would rage at me for the comparison between Fa Zhou (her dad) and Ozai, the truth is the dynamic between them CAN be compared, if loosely: Mulan literally goes to war to keep her father safe. Azula goes to war under her father's orders. Hell, she makes herself BAIT in the Eclipse to make sure the Gaang won't get to her dad?? While it's very much possible to say that both characters have different personalities and attitudes in life... I'd also bring up that their contexts are evidently completely different. I wouldn't say for certain that Azula, had she been raised outside a Royal Family, would be EXACTLY like Mulan... but they might have more similar traits than one might expect. Ultimately, though... I love them both. And this opportunity to swap their places was pretty much a dream come true!
Alright, that was plenty of rambling xD ultimately, I had a blast doing this commission, as I'm sure is obvious by now. So! If anyone wants to commission me, feel free to check out my prices right here and hit me up if you're interested!
#sokkla#sokka#azula#mulan au#xin long#zuko#aang#kino#the herbalist#momo#if you squint he's there okay he is just too damn complicated as a hybrid cricket-lemur alright#Xin Long is scale-less because he was too small and it was gonna look weird so for once he was a little less tricky :'D#I wish I could've had MORE epic scenes really this movie is a goddamn GEM#goldmine of glorious moments#it's just wonderful#I usually get sick of things as I work too much with them...#... Sokkla and Mulan are clearly a glorious exception to that rule#I wish I could've put in scenes with other correlating characters#Combustion Man was gonna be Shan-Yu#Chi-Fu was gonna be Long Feng#I can't remember who I had in mind for the emperor anymore#wasn't Kuei because he had to be old but welp#and yes it's too bad it's too sad there are not enough female characters here for the rest of the ATLA female cast...#but while I BRIEFLY considered making Toph one of the trio (Yao ofc)#the naked scene convinced me of the opposite quickly#... Toph would not succeed at convincing anyone that she was born a man she would straight up not even try#she'd just beat everyone up and scare them into shutting up#and while I'd LOVE to see that... it absolutely takes out the stakes from Azula being discovered as a woman pretending to be a man :'D#how tf would you kick one girl out while keeping the other one in the army#when the other one should be bold enough to stand on a rock in her birthday suit showing herself off in front of everyone

During the day your energy was minimal, and there were several times when you decided to leave your horse with the caretakers and continue your journey inside the carriage.
• Shan Yu did notice that something was wrong. You letting him ride alone, thinking loudly at night, talking less and less. During your economics classes, you didn't understand the content. In meetings with the Hun leaders, you did not interfere. During dinner, you turned the food around on your plate, thinking no one would notice.
• But of course Shan Yu noticed. Shan Yu would never ignore anything about you. Not the way your eyes didn't wrinkle when you smiled. Or how your laugh started to cease so fast. Not even how your gaze, something that always seemed to burn, got so pale.
• Its not been long since he recovered from the illness. Shan Yu remember the pain, the coldness, the lonely feeling of falling down. Then everything turned black. And when Shan Yu woke up, he had you on his arms. He will never forget that.
• Shan Yu will never forget how you hold him close. As if he would run away from you if he had the chance. Shan Yu will never forget the natural way you confessed your love. How your words came as sweet whispers, how your eyes glared at him with passion, how you asked him to not break your heart. He would never do such a thing.
• He swore to protect and care for you the day he first saw you, and that night Shan Yu swore to never dissapoint you. To never make you regret giving him your heart. To never make you feel anything but completely, perfectly, incandescently happy.
• And for sure you weren't feeling like that lately. And that was his problem to solve.
• Shan Yu hunt on your name. The largest animals, with the tastiest meat and warmest skins. Only the best for his empress. The elders were ordered to make the best teas and bath oils for your health. He is a man of actions, not words. To say he pray for your health don't change a damn thing, but to actively fight for it... this is more Shan Yu's style.
• And he asked — demanded — you to stay inside the carriage. No classes, no meeting, no problems that you decided you were the one that should fix. And sadly this include not riding beside him. If you can't rest at night, than you better stay at bed all the time you can.
• He will take care of everything. You don't need to move a inch of your body. It's his duty to care for you. Shan Yu will make sure that you eat, that you have your favorite books with you, that your bath is at the perfect temperature.
• If you're coughing, Shan Yu will be there with a cup of water for you. If you finally can sleep, Shan Yu will be the one closing the curtains. If your eyes can't focus on the letters from your book, Shan Yu will read out loud for you.
• It's his duty, but that does not mean Shan Yu don't get any pleasure for treating you like that. Everytime you let him take control, that you trust him, that you let him be near you: it is like a dream come true. For months he tried to win your heart, and now he finally have it. He wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.
Shan Yu's light sleep meant he always knew when your throat wouldn't let you rest. When he opened his eyes he saw you sitting on your bed, pulling the sweaty sheets away from your boiling skin, your body shaking from the incessant coughing.
“It’s okay,” you said between coughs. The moon illuminated your body, Shan Yu could see how shaken you were from being unable to rest for long enough. "Go back to sleep. I'm fine."
And before he could say anything, a strong crisis took over his body. Shan Yu stood up, approaching your bed, and filled a glass with water for you. You couldn't held it, so he placed the glass against your lips and helped you drink it.
You held his hand, eyes closed as you drank the water. Such a simple gesture, just your fingers on his, but it made Shan Yu's heart race. You looked away from the glass, eyes staring at something on the bed, but you didn't stop touching him.
"I feel so lonely", you murmured. Your fingers caressed his. "Lay with me."
Shan Yu held your hand, stroking your fine skin. He ran his nail down your fingers, along the lines in your palm, over the tips of your nails. Then he kissed your knuckles. One by one, Shan Yu kissed them.
"Of course, my moon." He kissed each of her fingers. A man as big as Shan Yu treating you with such care would never stop being a novelty. "Anything you want."
He sat in the empty space on the bed, and reclined against your pillows. They smelled just like you. Shan Yu stretched out one of his arms, inviting you.
Slowly, you lay on his chest. As you breath in, you got yourself comfortable. You intertwined his leg with yours, hugged Shan Yu's belly, curled up against his body. Shan Yu hugged you carefully, and spent the night stroking your back with his fingertips.
That night, you slept.
• Shan Yu has your heart, just as you have his.

Light (Shan yu x reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... um, hi, I'm not known for writing and I'm actually more known for drawing :/ but I think we should give more love to Disney villains- So I came here to write this, I just love shan yu and everything :³ but anyway, Sorry for any grammar errors,I'm Brazilian and I'm using the translator on my keyboard so yeah.. kisses from Brazil 😚

" At the beginning of it all, it was just darkness, Darkness took over hearts and filled people with fear. But then, the light appeared, the brightest of all, brought to us by our creator, But on one condition, that we would have this light as long as we take care of the root she gave us, We thought it would be an easy task, but the human heart is so selfish, that while we were enjoying the light, the root died more and more every day,And the goddess returned, our creator, she took the light, the hope, the happiness, everything, as punishment for our selfishness we would no longer have anything of what we so desired,But then, when all was lost... the root bore fruit, That as soon as it was opened, it brought a small piece of the much-desired light and hope... it brought a baby, and that baby would be the only and last spark of light in our world fallen into despair "
And the book closes, the little girl sitting in front of her father pouting.
"Is it over??.. and what happened to the baby??"
The father laughs softly and gets up, taking the little girl in his arms, carrying her up the stairs in the unfinished palace.
"the baby grew up and became a little girl, an adventurous, happy... and kind little girl"
He says gently poking the tip of the little girl's nose, making her laugh softly and hug her plush closer,When the old emperor enters the room and puts the girl to bed,Covering her as she looks at the ceiling thoughtfully before looking back at him.
" daddy? "
" yes my dear? "
"When I grow up... do you think I'll be a good empress?"
The emperor runs his hand through his beard, thinking about his daughter's question, when he laughs softly and nods, stroking her hair.
"but of course... you will be a great empress, the best China has ever seen"
He says kissing the girl softly on the forehead before getting up, Heading towards the door before looking at her
"Sleep well little light.. "
And he leaves the girl's room, closing the door before walking away

I wait for my father's footsteps to disappear, before smiling and getting up running to my window and looking down, Waiting anxiously before my eyes light up as it finally happens: the floating lights, Lanterns that my people light every night at this time, my father always said that it is a tribute to me, a little special treat that only I had, My smile getting bigger as I see the sky light up with lanterns
" one day, I will be Empress... the best they can have "
I whisper closing my eyes with a little smile, And when I open them I let out a scream, seeing a man in my window looking at me in silence, when I tilt my head gently to the side and he imitates my movement, making me smile and laugh softly, When I wave and he waves too, before pulling something from behind his back making my eyes light up.
" a floating light.. "
And the man looks at me, before extending it to me
"it's for you... little light"
I hesitate, before reaching out to take the flashlight from his hands,When I let out a little scream when being lifted off the ground
"release the lantern, but throw it up, otherwise it will fall"
The man says calmly, when I do what he said, laughing and clapping when I see the lantern float with the others, when I look at the man holding me
"What's your name sir???"
I see the man think a little, as if he was thinking about whether or not he could say his name, when he looks at me again.
"shan yu, you can call me shan yu"
And my smile gets bigger, when I extend my hand to him
"my name is ____.! It's a pleasure to meet you shan yu!"
And he stays silent before taking my hand gently
"The pleasure is all mine, little light"

Years later, every night, at the same time the young girl went to the window to watch the lights, She would meet Shan Yu, every day, every month, every year, Until one day he started coming less and less... until he didn't come anymore, The young girl only noticed how much she missed him once he disappeared, and noticed how her heart cried for him, broke every time he Didn't come, And the lights that were once so bright became opaque, dim... until they no longer had their shine, just as she no longer had the hope of seeing him, But as the years passed, as the moons descended and rose to the sky, as she grew, so did China, and her spirit, She forgot that one day she had even met Shan Yu, having associated him with just an imaginary friend who would never come back because she grew up, she associated him with a simple part of her head, And that was her problem...
One day she was preparing to take over her father's throne, to become the empress of China, but on the night of that day, she was hidden so as not to run into danger, "the Huns attacked" they said, "for your safety you will stay inside the castle" they said, But it was like locking a light in a sieve, it would always find a way to shine, And that's what she did, even with her father's warnings, she ran away from the palace, she wanted to be free, and if she couldn't be empress now then she would have her freedom
The people didn't stop her, after all, they loved how bright and radiant she looked when mingling with them, When happy she always seemed to help her people, how innocent she was in saying that the great wall was unnecessary, But she couldn't do much about it.
• ____. POV •
I sneak up on the palace wall, below my bedroom window, Climbing up the rope that I always leave to go out and go in again, Falling into my room and quickly taking off my cloak as I get up to start getting ready to accompany my father
"quickly, quickly, quickly.. "
I whisper to myself, fixing my hair and spinning in front of the mirror, smiling at my reflection,When I leave my room and quickly go down the stairs, stopping when I see General Li leaving, when I go to my father
"Daddy? What was General Li doing here?"
"The Huns have invaded the north side of the wall. Your coronation will be prolonged again"
And I stay silent before sighing, sitting next to him
"Again... like the last ten times"
I say looking down, the lights of the flames growing dim before my father puts his hand on my shoulder.
"It's for your safety, for now the target is me, and if you are crowned empress while they are still out there, then their focus will return to you, and I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened to you.. "
I sigh before smiling softly, the lights coming back to shine again
"I understand my father.. and I'm grateful to you for that.. "
And we both smiled, my sisters entering the room minutes later

• Yet ____. POV •
I sit in front of my dressing table in silence, undoing my hairstyle, the lantern lights shining outside and softly illuminating my room, But I didn't care about them as much as I used to, memories of a previous crush make me laugh quietly
" I was ridiculous.. falling in love with an imaginary friend.. I always laugh when I remember that.. "
I whisper to myself with a smile, but my smile falls when a shadow covers the lights coming from outside, When I turn around, and my heart drops, my eyes widen, and the lights outside get absurdly brighter when I see who it was...
". . .shan yu?"
And said man smiles at me, holding a flashlight just like he did when we first met.
" Hello.. My light.. "
UF- I finally finished it.. and I honestly started out wanting to do something cute, but then I thought; " why not make a yandere??" Anyway, I'm going to do a part two soon so... kisses from Brazil 😚

they wouldn't let me write the live action Disney adaptions because I would have had the best Ping you have ever seen. He and Shang would have had chemistry that took your breath away. They would be Yearning. the audience would be Yearning. it would be electric and terrifying and by marika would Mulan/Ping be hot. Shang is obsessed, the audience is obsessed. there would be hardly be a person in the attendance that doesn't Get where Shang is coming from. who wouldn't rend their clothes and scream to the heavens over Mulan/Ping. she takes no prisoners.
and yes, Shang kisses him in the snow as he cradles Ping's injured, dying body.
and yes, from the opening scene to the rolling credits he's going slowly mad.
and the first time you see Mulan she's dressed in the most feminine, floaty, light-colored dressy robes, with bone white makeup and painted lips and you fall in love with her. and there's something underneath, too. and it's so intriguing.
and then she shows up as Ping, and it takes a while to get used to, and it's kind of funny and awkward. but then it looks better and better to you. and soon you find you can hardly bear it when the camera turns away from him for even a second. and Ping isn't awkward to be around at all, he's stunning and brave and resilient and determined to be kind and you're desperately in love with him and you decide he looks incredible in the warriors' robes, actually. and his smile makes you want to kiss him. it makes Shang want to scream. and to kiss him.
and then comes the last leg. and she's got the gender-neutral robes, the "neutral" stage makeup. the loose updo. and you've never been as attracted to anyone in your life as Shang is to her. and you get it. you really, really get it. and wow the way the cuff of her sleeves and the silhouette of her robes make your heart clench. and the way her posture, her gait, make a new kind of sense. you can feel this is It. this is The Costume. you're obsessed and Shang is obsessed.
And then in the end, she's wearing pretty soft-colored robes and it makes you think for a moment that she looks like she did at the beginning. but then actually something makes her strength visible too. is it the cut of the costume? her posture? the framing of the shots? Yes it is. and you know, when Shang shows up, You know he can see it too. and he doesn't want to stop looking any more than you do. and he isn't going to even when you do.
every kid that ever watched my Mulan would recall it as Formative, like y'alls Danny Phantom but on the sickest steroids ever invented. She'd be irresistible. and so very gender.
