So i remember an ask mentioning your mortal enemy, Felis Atra and their cats, and i thought it'd be fun to draw what Felis Atra's version of your italian dogs would be.

I think they would be called Butter Knife and Flamengo! Butter Knife is not his real name, it's an nickname given by his peers because of how harmless he is. I choose Flamengo because that's the name of Vasco's rival football team here in Brazil, so i thought that was the perfect name :)

Cat Machete was slightly inspired by the Oriental Shorthair cat because of their long noses and thin head shape.

Cat Vasco was inspired by the Scottish Fold cat, because FLOPPY EARS. I gave Flamengo longer ears and orange fur to make him more like his look-alike.

The last doodle is a reference to this ask (https://canisalbus.tumblr.com/post/728923918314946560/me-i-am-machete-ear-fan-number-1-those-ears) and contains the tumblr ask stand-in dog, whose cat version was inspired by the American Curl cat! They have round ears that are slightly floppy outwards.

Final notes: I know cardinal clothes don't come in vibrant blue, but i was ADAMANT on switching Machete's and Vasco's clothing color patterns. I would draw the rest of Butter Knife's and Flamengo's clothes, but i suck at designing cool outfits.

Speaking of outfits, for Machete's iconic void outfit, i figured it would be fun to make it more baggy for Butter Knife, in contrast to Machete's, that looks very tight-fitted. I think it's cute, it kinda looks like a sweater. Also i can't imagine a Machete doppelganger without high heels boots, so those HAD to stay.

Oh, and just to be clear, i'm not like, claiming ownership of these guys or anything. I just thought it would be a fun exercise. Hope you like them!! I love your art and your characters.

Something kinda tasteless about the way that alongside the concerns of "Batman needs someone to rein in his aggression/edginess" (mostly a meta concern,) "Robin is a symbol of undying hope right alongside Batman, Superman, and the police system," and "now that the thought's crossed my mind I think being Robin would be pretty sweet actually," one of Tim's points for why he should be Robin at the end of A Lonely Place of Dying is "we need to show the criminals of Gotham that they can't just kill Robin and expect to get away with it!" Because. They can. That's exactly what happened.

Using that line of reasoning, Tim makes the claim that the idea of Jaybin's life as disposable and inconsequential is heinous and bad, his killing something impermissible, but instead of disproving said idea they allow it to become true and devote their energy to making sure it doesn't become widely known as such. By covering his death up, they actually are permitting his murder to go unaddressed and deeming it acceptable, even taking away the opportunity for it to be consequential to anyone outside of Bruce's inner circle by not spreading the news. As much as we say "oh Bruce was a great dad because losing Jason crushed him" and "he almost considered trying to kill the Joker one time," he in all tangible areas did not do anything about Jason's death. Setting aside the question of killing the Joker or not, it's still shown in Batman Year 3 that Bruce's reaction to Jason's death in the time til Tim showed up was to hide away everything Jason owned and carry on with business as usual, a little angrier. Bruce didn't make any changes or actually evaluate anything in a significant way after the warehouse and Jason's death didn't warrant any tangible consequence, that's evident from reading the comic. I know some may disagree, and I acknowledge the room for interpretation, but in order to discuss Tim's reason we have to concede that it is explicitly written into this specific comic as something Bruce and Tim both recognize as fact, because it serves as the foundation that this reason is built on: there is good reason for the criminals to believe there would no punishment for killing Robin based on the actions Bruce did or didn't take in response. The concern about the public realizing there are no consequences for killing Robin wouldn't be reasonable if it wasn't true, if there actually were.

While they recognize that Jason's death came to pass largely without consequence, the fact itself is less of an issue to both Bruce and Tim than letting criminals actually find out that it doesn't have consequence. They know it's unjust, the notion that Jason can be killed without repercussion (and in making an effort to minimize his murder confirm it to be true,) but their concern isn't for what actually happened to Jason or the lack of proper response. At least on the vigilante side of things, the problem is public perception and continuing to uphold an image of Batman as just and diligent while permitting him to ignore injustice against those close to him. There's no efforts taken to actually disprove the idea that killing Robin would lack impact, what Tim proposes is just making it harder to prove right.

I think the best way to word what comes across tasteless for me here (aside from the side commentary on the unstoppable might of the institution of police and how it's an exemplar of heroism) is that beyond Tim's victim-blaming of Jason during his stint as Robin, (discussed in more depth by people who can word it better than me,) in the base text of a Lonely Place of Dying, it is foundational to the initial premise of Tim as Robin that part of his motive for being Robin hinges on accepting what happened to Jason as something that cannot be allowed in their pursuit of justice or go unaddressed for reasons completely unrelated to the actual harm, and then intentionally erasing the event and the way in which it was allowed and did go unaddressed. No matter how much it's claimed in later comics that Bruce was faultless and Jason doomed himself, Tim's Robin came to be at least in part (in-universe) as a cover-up for the lack of action taken about Jason's death, and by extension as an effort to overwrite his time as Robin and an individual entirely. And thought it wasn't the way his character viewed it, Tim wasn't passively complicit in it or going along with a poor grieving man, the intentional and deliberate erasure of Jason as a murder victim and the injustice of his posthumous treatment was part of his opening pitch.

Seen at least one (1) person complain about Crocodile losing his "unique faceshape" (now having the same facial structure that 90% of OP men have) after episode 1086 came out and like

To be fair, yes, the shape of his head HAS changed since his first appearance in The Year 2000. The thing is, Toei's latest Crocodile Offering is frankly more in-line with how Oda drew Crocodile during Impel Down and Marineford than ever before. Like yeah he looks different, but this change isn't new

But that comment really did make me think about how FUNNY it is just how different Croc really looks from his first appearance, like. The evolution in how Oda draws the bastard is so facinating to me

These are from chapters 155, 160 and 205 respectively.

No massive changes happening here in the middle of the arc, but you can kinda tell that Oda was definitely still figuring out how this asshole was supposed to look as he got further into the Alabasta (which is perfectly normal), which just makes That First Appearance look even funnier with time because. Who the fuck is that lmaooo

But then we get to see him briefly during Miss Goldenweek's cover story, this being from the cover of chapter 413! All things considdered, bastard hasn't changed that much, still looks pretty much the same as in Alabasta. His head is maybe a little less elongated than before but still, chin is quite pointy still

And now we're in Impel Down at chapter 540. Again, dude looks about the same as he did before...

But it really doesn't take long for Oda to start reshaping this bastard's entire head at this point

Chapters 544, 546, 578, and cover of chapter 584

The chin is easily the most obvious part, but you can tell Oda kind of defaulted to giving him that same ol' evenly square-ish head most his conventionally attractive characters have during these story arcs (instead of the elongated shape he originally had).

And then we have the latest appearances, from 1082 and 1100

I do feel like comparing these to what's come before would be a little unfair considdering his health and eyesight and how those affect the artwork itself, but. They're there, for comparison's sake

But the point is still there. Crocodile's face shape has changed since his first appearance, but it's not like Toei was behind that, the change was (mostly) gradual and from Oda himself. And it mostly happened in 2008, so it's not new by any means either

So really, all Toei did was just update his character model because ⬆️ is more accurate than ⬇️ for One Piece right now

Regardless. The sheer difference between the two is hysterical to me

Thoughts about Hijikata Toushirou

I think one of the most intriguing aspects of Hijikata's character is his internal conflict between his responsibilities as the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi and his personal desires. As the second-in-command, Hijikata is burdened with immense pressure to uphold the honor and integrity of the organization, often at the expense of his own happiness.

Initially, his deep sense of duty and loyalty to protect Edo is mainly associated with how he feels about Kondo, their dynamic being integral to the structure and dynamics of the Shinsengumi. They both possess a strong sense of responsibility and honor, and, despite their differing leadership styles and personalities, they share the common goal of keeping peace.

Eventually, this evolves into a drive of his own, something he wants to do for himself. He wants to protect Edo because all the people who are important to him live there. That is what leads him to challenge authority when he believes it’s necessary to achieve justice, despite being a stern and disciplined leader.

Yes, Edo is where the people important to him still live. One of the problems I’ve with the character is how he was written during the Mitsuba arc and, although he was portrayed as a great man who only wants the woman he loves to be happy, he assumed and made the decision for her about what he thought would make her happy, and even when she was dying he didn't visit her.

Hijikata is a more traditional guy, and I wouldn't be surprised if Sorachi wanted him to represent the typical Japanese man. There’s a reason the title of the chapter in which Mitsuba dies is called “German Suplex Any Woman Who Asks, 'Which Is More Important, Me or Your Work?” (132 of the manga). But I still would’ve liked his more traditional views on gender, which are presented on more than one occasion, to be treated as something to overcome.

But that’s tied to another problem, which is that Hijikata barely has a relationship with the women throughout the series, or many other characters to be honest. Having so much screen time, his interactions with the rest of the cast are usually limited to the Shinsengumi and the Yorozuya, mostly Gintoki. He later has a rivalry with Isaburo that has more substance, but the character is killed relatively soon after.

Overall, Hijikata is a standout character in Gintama, thanks to his complex personality, love for mayonnaise, internal struggles, and dynamic relationships with some characters. Still, I think Sorachi limited his relationships too much. He introduced a love interest to the story and then killed her in the same arc (and never mentioned her again), he introduced a brother who’d already died, he makes him form a friendship with the hardboiled detective that is then forgotten, and so on.

oc-tober 2024 day 9: relationships

it's a love square... a love kite? it's love!!!

The squad is complete! (well mostly, i miiight draw Nishay properly again at some point.) But today's focus is on Tiffany Brightwood, who is most definitely not a catgirl but uses the image to her advantage anyway!

She is, however, the it-girl of my dnd campaign, going from background character to central plot device to beloved recurring npc relatively quick!

This version of her isn't meant to show up until waaay later in the (now on indefinite hiatus) story, and i was actually planning to bring her in as my own pc at some point! it's the same round face and smug expression that the party's familiar with, but now she's got a sort of... roguish charm? 🤨😏

anyway! this horndog (horncat?) is known for having her fingers in quite a few romantic pies. what started off as a frisky love square situation has now evolved into a deeply committed quad polycule, bonded together by love and trust. and trauma. and Tiffy's riiiight at the center of it all!

oooooo It's been quite a while since I read the book (2020) but moshang are such an interesting dynamic. 🤔 A God and his Most Autistic soldier-cum-portable air-conditioner. Dude even gets killer tits to boot. There's some very potent scenes that even I adored.

The "He can't fly!!!" scene. On one hand that was the oh shit moment where I realised they were canon and on the other hand it stood out that despite Mobei Jun being Airplane's dream boyfriend; the ability to fly was apparently not on his list of Top Qualities. In a Xianxia world.

The dating advice scene. Shang Qinghua telling his (un)beloved son that acting pathetic wa the was to a man's dick and balls just further cemented in my heart that he may be Sneaky and a Competent spy but he has Zero none absolutely no street smarts. Mobei Jun even looks at him after he says that which just confirms in his head that 'Yes we are in fact courting each other. I was right all along.'

i am curious how kotarou maghni will be received in the eng vsynth community, part of me thinks he might be perfect for vsynth fans, often young and short themselves, who really gravitate towards and project onto short-ish youthful masc synths and make em sing broody emo stuff (this is not shade ive been doing this too since i was a tween but with men who are 5'9") like ur olivers and lens and pikos and fukases etc. but his voice is very heavily voice acted in a pretty unique goofy tone. but he is gonna have vocal modes, iirc a dark one? maybe that'll give him the coldness he needs. plus goofier tones can be great in a depressing song, gachapoid has taught us that. all that to say though he probably will be largely ignored outside of the 4-6 english speaking virvox fans and people who follow vocal synth software Closely, only just because lowkey the larger english vsynth fanbase focuses pretty heavily on older more established synths, usually vocaloids or former vocaloids LOL but thats okay. i will be there for you kotarou. i will make you sing some emo shit

A piece from a couple years ago that was featured in the amazing publication And Seek (Not) To Alter Me which I realised recently I never actually shared anywhere before now lol!

My idea for this was an 1980's punk AU where Beatrice is a preppy lesbian and Benedick (just known as Ben in my version) is a genderfluid punk! I wanted my piece to look kinda like a poster for a rom com (the chair & the poses of the characters were directly based on the poster for 10 Things I Hate About You lol) and really wanted this to capture the dynamic between the characters (which I hope I achieved lol)!
