At the beginning of the semester, we learned about the four elements of hip hop: the DJ, MC, graffiti, and b-boy/b-girl/breakers. Breakdancing has been a central part of hip hop because it was a way for an individual to react to hip hop music and express themselves visually. This street-style dance originally began in the 1970’s amongst African American youth in New York City but has since expanded past New York. In fact, it has since expanded past the United States. Earlier in 2019 it was announced that there are discussions for adding breakdancing to the collection of sports shown in the 2024 Olympic Games hosted in Paris, France. Many countries are interested in bringing their own breakdancing flare to the Olympics. In the last few weeks, Jamaica has also expressed their interest in participating in this considered sport.


The president of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), Christopher Samuda, spoke on the potential for Jamaica participating in a worldwide breakdance competition by saying, “We’re expecting strong representation in other activities than track and field, and this should be one of them.” But Samuda is not the only Jamaican excited about the possibility for breakdancing to be included in the Olympics, so is Conray Richards. Richards is a member of the breakdance group SHADYSQUAD. This Jamaican breakdance group went viral when they posted a Youtube video dancing to “One Dance” by Drake. Richards says he is excited for people within his community to have the opportunity to express themselves and receive international recognition for their talent.
Standing in between Jamaica’s b-boys/b-girls and the 2024 Olympics is a final vote help by the International Olympic Committee in December of next year. 

Although breakdancing may not make the final cut for the list of sports that will be broadcasted in 2024, I still feel like it is a big accomplishment for breakdancing to be recognized at this level. Breakdancing has been scrutinized in the past for not being a true art form, but this style of dance has still managed to spread past the United States to countries like Japan, Brazil, and Cambodia. I think what would be the most fascinating for me, should breakdancing make it to the Olympics, are the different styles and techniques that each country brings to the dance. Hip hop is more broad of a genre than we are led to believe, so it would be interesting to see what rap songs inspire them and how people from different countries dance to hip hop. We saw in “Rize” how spiritual and healing dance can be for people. Breakdancing is a soulful dance and if it is ever brought to the 2024 Olympics, I have a feeling that audiences, both in-person and sitting in front of their television screen, would be able to connect with the soul of this dance.
